All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry are to be transmitted under cover addressed to the Inspector- General of Constabulary, authenticated by ; Separate Communication. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to tho Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this information it is almost impossible to rectify the mistake. DUBLIN, FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 1883. ENGLISH POLICE. WILFUL MURDER. £ 100 REWARD. WHEREAS, the Coroner's Jury, on the 18th inst., found a verdict of wilful murder against Harry Hammond Swindells, for having, on the 16th inst., caused the death of James Wild, by shooting him with a revolver. A reward ot £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person, other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom, who will give such information as shall lead to tho discovery of the Murderer. He is 49 years of age, 5 feet 3J inches high-,, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, moustache and beard American fashion, whisker's shaved off, dark blue eyes, Roman nose with blue mrirk on the bridge, high check bones, large mouth, has only One or two tooth in upper jaw, scar on right side of neck, little finger of right hand crooked, wulks with a swinging gait; drossed in a black ribbc. 1 double- breasted worsted slack back jacket ( 4ie right shoulder and arm of which may bear traces of limewash), irowsors and vest of same material, new black soft billycock hat with largo brim, new spring side boots with square, toes ; be formerly was steward in the service of the Allan Line Co., working between Liverpool and New York; is woll known at the Liverpool docks; will no doubt endeavour, to escape to America. M. and 0 r. sr., on the 27th instant:— A hunting lever watch, gold- plated case, a cannon and tho word " Gibralter " over it 011 tho one side and a ship on fire on the other; a lady's gold Geneva watch and chain and locket, with two ladies' portraits therein ; an old silver Verge watch ; a massive gold ring and seal with the letter " B." on it; two gold watch- keys, tube of one broken off; an oval gold brooch, with gentleman's likeness therein, initialled on back J. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Patrick O'Brien or Bryan, I 1028, convicted in Limerick, at Limerick Spring Assizes, on 4tli March, 1875, for larceny after previous conviction for felony, and sentenced to 10 years' penal servitude :— 33 years of age on conviction, single, is a labourer, born in Temple- bredin, county Limerick, where he resided before conviction, his friends reside at Hospital, county Limerick; bald hair turning gray, gray eyes, brown eyebrows, small and cocked nose, regular mouth, sallow complexion, oval visage, forehead receding, a round pimple near corner of right eye, P. and B. tattooed on right arm, average make, 5 feet inches high. This man was discharged on licence from Mountjoy Prison on 13th July, 1883, and went to Limerick. He reported himself at New Pallas on 16th July, but he has left that place, and liis present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with . under the 5th section of the Act 34 and 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, August 20, 1883. Particulars relative to Convict John Cox, alias Murphy, alias Callaghan, alias Shoulden, alias George Johnston, 10652, convicted in Monaghan, at Assizes, on 7th March, 1878, for stealing from the person, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude :— 40 years of age on conviction, married, is a horse dealer, born in Swanlinbar, county Cavan, resided before con- viction in Monaghan, hi3 friends reside in Belfast; dark hair turning gray, gray eyes, dark eyebrows, cocked nose, medium mouth, sallow complexion, large visage, cut marks on forehead, stout make, 5 feet 11 inches high. This man Was released on licence from Mountjoy Prison on 7th August, 1883, and went to Queens- town ; lie left Quecnstown on the 8tli August, and stated he was going [ to a place near Millstreet, but PARTICULARS relative to English convict Patrick Lynch, C 1623, convicted in Omagh, county Tyrone, on llth October, 1876, for subsequent felony, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude:— 23 years of age on conviction, single, is a tailor, bom in Boyle, resided before conviction in Tunstall, Staffordshire, his friends reside in Boyle, county Roscommon ; dark brown hair, blue eyes, dark complexion, ovai visage, proportionate make, two cuts on crown, one on back of head, small scar above right eyebrow, two blue marks below left elbow, burn scar top of shoulder, blue tattoo marks above wrist, scar on small of back outside builoek, scar,, on back of right shoulder, four vaccination marks 0x1 left arm, scars on right hip, on right thigh and on right shin, 5 feet inches high. This man was released from Dartmoor Prison 10th April, 1883, and reported himself on the of same month to the Police at Dublin, on the April he reported himself at Naas, on theJLO at Athlone, on the 22nd April at Boyle, fr he went on the same date to Mohill, county but he has not reported himself at the latt and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, Dublin Castle, August 15, 1883. ( 26872 m.— 49582.) PARTICULARS relative to English Convict John M'Gowan, D 1189, convicted in Leicester, at Assizes, on 1st November, 1879, for manslaughter, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude:— 70 years of age on conviction, widower, is a labourer, born in Mayo, resided before conviction in Chapel- en- frith ; gray hair, light blue eyes, fresh complexion, round visage, short stout make, 5 feet 2J inches high, scar on crown, right side of chest, and right side of belly, large round scar on front of right shoulder, venesection marks on both arms. This man left London the 30th June, 1883, for . Sligo, but ho has not reported himself at the latter place, and his present whereabouts are unknown. PARTICULARS relative to Convict John O'Brien, 10765, convicted at Fermoy, county Cork, at Trinity Sessions, on 1st July, 1878, for larceny from person and former conviction, and sentenced to seven years' penal servitude :— 23 years of age on conviction, is a Roman Catholic, married, is a dealer, born in Clon- mel, resided before conviction in Barrack- street, Cork, his friends reside in Newmarket, Dublin ; dark brown hair, hazel eyes, dark brown eyebrows, small nose, regular mouth, sallow complexion, OVH! vi age, average make, 5 feet 7 inches ligb, lost a front upper tooth, scars on head, three boil marks on ri- ht THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, AUGUST 31, 1883. shin, burn mark on inside of left ankle, mark in left groin, scar on upper lip. This prisoner escaped from Lusk Prison at 9 30 A. M., on the 13th instant. Notice.— A reward of irom £ 3 to £ 5 may be paid to'any person who may apprehend and deliver up a convict who shall have effected his escape from a Government Prison. Application to be made to the Governor of the Prison. By Act 19th and 20th Vic., cap. 68, sec. 33, it is provided that any person who shall by any means whatover, aid and assist any prisoner to escape, or in attempting to escape, shall be guilty of felony, and being convicted thereof, shall ba kept in penal servi- tude for any term not less than 6 nor more than 8 years. ( 26670 M.— 49217 ) DESCRIPTION of the undermentioned juvenile offender, who absconded on 20th instant, at about one o'clock, while proceeding to the Reformatory from Naas Prison :— Thomas Johnston, No. 204, about 18 years of ago, 5 feet 4 inches higb, pretty stout make, sallow complexion, fair hair, gray eyes, nose a little turned up, round visage, heavy countenance, small mark of an old cut above right eye on forehead, and small wart on left side of upper lip, formerly belonged to Tralee, county Kerry ; his parents are dead. Tho dress, all with Reformatory stamp, consists of cord trowsers, cord sleeved vest, jerry hat, strong nailed boots fastened by strap and buckle, and blay cotton socks. The absconder is likely to enlist. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyanco, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capturo him with £ 1. DESCRIPTION of Charles Murray, native place un- known, who stands charged with having, on the night of tho 20th August, 18S3, in tho barony of Lower Massercene, parish of Killead, stolen a horse, value for £ 20, out of the stables of David Wallace, at Ballymather :— Long nose, sallow complexion, small thin face, slight make, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 25 years of age, black hair and small black board ; worQ a dark tweed coat, dark trowsers, and vest; is a horse and cattle drover. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 8th August, 1883, absconded from the Malone Reformatory School at Belfast:— William John Orr, 318, about 19 years of age, 5 feot 7 inches high, stout make, sallow complexion, brown hair, small gray eyes, ordinary mouth, oval visage, burn mark on nose, J. tattoed on right forearm, blue mark between thumb and forefingor of left hand, and scar on forefinger of same hand ; formerly belonged to Belfast, where his parents reside. The school dress, all with Reformatory stamp, consists of dark tweed trowsers, gray tweed vest and overcoat, felt hat, nailed blucher boots, house No. 13, The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. DESCRIPTION of William Oates, native of Curragh Camp, who stands charged with having, on the 23rd August, 1883, in the barony of East Offally, parish of Ballysax, fradulently embezzled money to the amount of £ 22 5s. 2Jo?, delivered to and received by him for and on account of his master, Bartholomew Murphy, Postmaster, Curragh Camp :— Delicate- looking, dark eyes, thin nose, pale complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet high, about 16 years of age, dark hair cut short; wore ft felt hat, and navy blue suit; is a clerk in post offices. Garnett, which were stolen out of a box in his residence at Loughbrown, barony of Connell, parish of Pollardstown, between the 2nd and 23rd~ instant:— 1. A silver cream jug, chased crest, castellated tower, had either three or four feet, about half an inch high. 2. M., on the 7th August, 1883, in the barony of Clon- mahon, parish of Ballintemple, feloniously stabbed Edward Smith on public road, near townland of Bruskey, thereby endangering his life :— Old cut- mark over one eye, gray or blue eyes, long nose, dark freckled complexion, long face, medium make, 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, about years of age, dark hair; had side whiskers and moustache ; hud chin shaved. R., in which direction lie then pro- ceeded:— Brown moustache and shaved chin, long face, slender make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, brown hair; wore a hard jerry hat, blue pilot old frock coat, corduroy trowscr?, and moleskin vest; military highlow boots; is a tramp, looks like a tinker. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Hosey, native of Edenderry, who stands chargod with having, on the 29th July, 1883, in the barony of Lune, parish of Killaconnigan, brokon into tho dwelling- house of Michael Browne, of Donore, with intent to commit a felony therein :— Old cut on upper lip and bridge of nose, gray eyes, flat nose, fair complexion, small face, slight make, 5 feet 3 inches high, about 40 years of age, dark brown hair; wore a hard black hat, tweed coat, light tweed trowsers and vest; all the clothing much worn ; is a tramping tailor. M., in the barony of Upper- woods, parish of Offerlane, committed highway robbery at Rushall, near Castletown, by taking a purse and sixpence or sevenpence which it contained from Michael Hyland, of Aughafin :— Apparently lame as if boots were leaning on him, round face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 35 years of age, dark brown hair; wore asoft hat, dark or blue coat, light trowsers, check shirt, and elastic boots; is sus- pected to be a tramp. DESCRIPTION of Edward Tobin ( mother's surname Ryan), native of Doonane, who stands charged with having, on the 21st July, 1883, at Clonbrock, in the barony of Sleevemargry, parish of Killabban, seriously assaulted John Mulhall, by striking him with an iron bar on the head, from the effects of which his life is in danger:— Hazel eyes, regular nose, fair coihplexion, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 18 years of age; wore a soft hat, dark tweed coat, corduroy trowsers, and dark tweed vest; is a miner.
