NottC*.— It i* requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably accessary that » n information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, < » f the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letter* addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Offioe Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, sbove, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. 32 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, slender figure, sallow complexion, dark moustache, no whiskers, brown hair, grey eyes, smart, and has a soldiery appearance, anchor on back of left arm, and a native of Whalley, near Accrington ; dressed in dark jacket and vest, corduroy trousers, worsted cap with bob on the crown, and clogs. He has been a soldier in the 73rd foot, and has served 5 or 6 years in the Eait Indies ; is in the army reserve, ard drew his pay at Accrington ahouc a fortnight ago. Frequents common lodging houseH and low beer houses, and associates with prostitutes, where it is likely be will be found spending the money. It Is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or ether- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of HABRY HAMMOND SWINDELLS, charged with the Wilful Murder of James Wild, by shooting him with a revolver at 12 50 pm. 16th. also, hy the same means, with Wounding his ( Swindell's) Wife :— He is 49 years of age, 5 feet inches high, sallow complexion, dirk brown hair, moustache and beaid American fashi( D, whiskers shaved off, dark blue eyes, Roman nose, blue mark on do., high cheek bones, large mouth, has only one or two teeth in upper jaw, scar right side of neck, and walks with a swinging gait; < lrea8f < I in a black ribbed double- bieasted worsted slack- back jacket ( the right shou'dtr and arm of which may bear traces of limewasb), trousers and vest of same material, new black soft billycock hat with large brim, aid new side spring boots with square toes. He formerly was steward in the service of the Allan Line Co, working between Liverpool and New York ; is well known at Liverpool Docks. Information to Chief Constable, Town Hall, OLDHAM, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, July 20. Found on the beach at Hove, on the morning of 9th instant, the dead Body of a Man apparently about 60 years of age, about 6 feet 6 inches long, brown hair turning grey, full heard, whiskers aid moustache same colour ; dressed in black cloth frock coat, black cloth vest, dark tweed trousers with light mixture, has varicose veins in one leg, for which he appeared to be wearing an elastic stocking, and had on one low shoe. Absconded from Calcutta, charged with Forgery and uttering F. rgtd documents :— ROBEttT BRUCE McPHUN, a Scotcbmau, 30 to 40 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches higb, very curly hair, fa d to be arable to grow hair on face, might be taken for an actor, and gentlemanly appearance ; a tea mer chant. Has relatives at Ayr, N. B., ai^ d friends at Glasgow. Warrant issued. Information to tbe Director of Criminal Investigations, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, S. W.— Metropolitan Pl lice, July 20. Charged with feloniously uttering and putting off, know- ing the satae to be Forged, a certain Acquittance and Receipt for Money with intent to defraud :— SIDNEY GRAY, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, few slight whiskers and small moustache, rather sharp features, a groom and gardener, and a native of Milton, next Sittingbourno. Information to Supt,. Mayne, Police Court, SITTINGBOURNE, Kent. — Bcw- btreet, July 18. SLOBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Wanted for stealing from the person, £ 28 in gold, with violence, at Whaley Bridge, on 16th inst,:— a man, about BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at. Wotton, between 9 a. m. and 9 p. m. on ISthinstaut :— two p. irsof gold Ear- rings; one gold Ring, with bloodstone ; one gold Ring, with 3 blue stones ; one silver Locket and Chain ; one silver Ring ; one leather Purse ; four pairs of lady's Drawers ; and one Chemise. Supposed by tramps. Information to Supt. Limbert, Surrey Constabulary, DORKING,— Bow- street, July 20. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Hemingbrough, on 9th instant:— a black ribbed cloth Jacket, has two pockets outside and one inside left breast; a black ribbed cloth Vest, double breasted; a pair brown and grey mixture cloth Trousers and Vest; 2 blue and white checked cotton Shirts, one feather stitched, and the other lined with old check shirting, sleeves not hemmed ; a pair of elastic Braces, with blue stripe ; a pur men's grey worsted StockiDgs ; a gentle- man's white pocket Handkerchief, ' J. Farrah' marked in one corner with ink ; and a pair light laced Boots, with brass eyelet holes and hooks at top. The black coat aud vest have baen recovered. The coat was pledged at Goole, on the night of the robbery, by a man, who gave the name of HENRY WOOD, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, very dark complexion, dark brown hair, small whiskers aud black moustache, slender build, supposed to have a scar on right side of neck ; dressed in dark long frock coat, dark mixture tweed trousers, linen collar, puce tie, lace- up boots, and haid felt billycock hat. The vest, was pledgee* on morning of 10th instant, by a woman, who gave her Dame as ELLEN SMITH, 28 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches higb, fresh com- plexion, brown hair; dressed in dark brown velvet waist, red and black plaid handkerchief; had a little girl with her, about 6 years old, with fair hair and complexion ; they both stopped at a common lodging- house in Goole. on Monday night, and left about 11 a. m., on Tuesday morning, stating they were making for Hull. Information to Inspector W. H. Winpsnny, East Riding Constabulary, ESCRICK, York.— Bow- street, July 16. The man advertised in Police Gazette of 13th instant, ( wanted at Marthfield) has been arrested upou three charges of burglary, he gives three different names viz. :— WILLIAM THOMAS, alias HARRIS and WILLIAMS, about 30 years of age, 5 feet inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, slight light moustache, no whiskers, slightly pock- marked, boil mark left shoulder, two ditto left side of neok, two moles on left cheek, s ightly ruptured ( left side), mole on bend left arm, large scar on thick of left thumb ; dressed in hard bowler hat, dark tweed coat, ribbed dark cloth vest, dirty cord trousers, grey flannel ( army) shirt, a cotton check ditto, aud blue necktie. Two pawntickets were found in his possession relative to an overcoat and a suit of clothes, pledged in London, the 1st on 5th January, 2nd on 25th J une, lb83, in the name of Jas. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING1 The light bay Cob Mare, advertised in Police Gazette of 18th inst., as stolen from Upton Magna, Salop, has been found.— Bow- street, July 20. Stolen from Norton, between 3rd and 12th instant four 3- year old wether Sheep of Radnor Forest breed, notch on point of left ear, and piece from inside of right ear, pitch marked with ' J. M.' on each hip. £ b reward will be giveu for information that will lead to the recovery of the Sheep aud conviction of the thief, by the owner Mr. Johu MoniDgton. Information to A. S. Hopton, PRESTEIGN, Radnorshire.— Bow street, July 18. Detained at Romford by the police, and supposed stolen : — a bay Cob, 15 hands high, black mane, tail and legs, white off hind fetlock, wiih a few black hairs on the inside, a few white hairs on the forehead, and a large body. Stolen or strayed from a field at Tat Bank, Oldbury, on the night of 9th iostant, the property of Mr. Daniel Nightin- gale, butcher, of Oldbury :— 6 fat Cows— 4 red ones aud 2 roan, marked with two plain scissor marks on left rump. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen from a gentleman's house, at West Derby; some time between 15th ultimo and 2cd instant, during the absence of the family :— A gilt drawing room Clock, about 18 inches'high, with hand- paiuted flowers on blue enamel in front, a gilt cupid at the top, festoonB of gilt flowers at eitner side, black stand, maker ' Elkington.' A pair of Dresden China Figures, paiated— one, a man with band raised to the face; the other, a girl hold- ing hat in hand. A pair of valuable China Ornaments, pale blue, with figures painted on them— one a lady holding up a bunch of cherries; the other, a lady looking at a bird in a cage. A pair of ciown Derby Ornaments, shaped like a basket, with handle across and a small bow at either aide of handle. A small cldua Ornament in the shape of a thrush. A small Ornament in pink fluted glass on stand of plate glass. A China Figure of a boy wearing a long coat and playing tbe flute. 2 small Ornaments— one blue and white, representing a Cupid iu a boat ; the other, a slipper, all blue. A floral cabinet Album, with dark leather back, silver edged leaves, and the initials ' E. S. L.' on back. A large gr-* en plaid Table Cover, from dining- room. Very handsome myrtle green satin Dress, trimmed - with JaGe same shade, makers, ' G. H. Lee & Co., Basnett Street.' A fine damask Table Cloth, two Sheet3, and three Pillow Slip?. Black satin Skirt, with cashmere top, caught up with two jet buckles on the left side. Maroen merveilleux satin child's Dress, blue and white check silk, and other children's Dresses. Black poplin Dress, and black cashmere ditto, child's Mantle in brown check cloth, caught up at the back with brown satin bow. By a man ( who was seen with the bath chair), about 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 iuehes high, fresh complexion, stout bu Id, and full dirk whiskers round his face ; dressed in a black cloth coat and vest, and dark cloth trousers, black billycock hat, boots, and of respectable appearance ; can be identified. £ 10 reward will be paid for such information as will lead to the apprehension of the thief or thieves and recovery of property. Absconded on 4th instant, charged on a warrant, with embezzlement: — CHARLES DeLANGHE, a clerk, 25 years of age, 5 fe<" t 5 inches high, dark hair, eyes and com- plexion, black moustache, aud small side whiskers, peculiar twitching in eyes, and slightly bow- legged ; dressed in brown Ruit and brown hard felt hat, drab gaiters over shoes ; a Frenchman. Information to Inspector MeWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 26, OLD JEWRY, EC.— Bow- street, July 18. Stoler from a dwelling- house at Cayton, near Scar- borough, during the night of 15th instant.:— a dark grey mixture tweed cloth Coat, man's size, about half worn, pocket s on hips, one inside left breast, bound round with black braid, dark bone buttons, had a memorandum Book in inside pocket ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, man's size, blojk fronts, about half worn, each boot capped at side. Supposed by a tramp, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, ginger hair, inclined to curl, ginger whiskers, slender build ; supposed dressed in. stolen coat, blue jean jacket underneath, moleskin trousers, round felt bat, and stolen boots, as a pair of old low shoes were left near the house. Wanted, charged on a warrant with fraud :— HENRY GREY, 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, full com- plexion, fair beard and moustache ( turning grey), square shoulders, medium build, weak knees ; dressed in dark coat, light mixture trousers, and tall hat ; has had letters addressed to Mr. Hancock, 7, Bishop's- road, Paddington, till called for. Information to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, OLD JEWRY, London, E. C.— Bow- street, July 18. Description of EDWARD BROWN, wanted on warrant, charged with stealing a light spring Cart ( recovered), on or about the 16th October, 1882 :— 55 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, turning grey ; dressed, when last seen, in dark cloth jacket, dark trou- ers, black felt hat with square top, and old lace- up boots ; has a very shabby appearance ; a native of Cossington, Leicestershire. £ This man has served six months in Her Majesty's Prison, Leicester, for horsestealing since 1st January last. Is in the habit of travelling the country collecting old iron, & c., with a pony and four- wheeled trolly. Has a daughter, Mrs. George Ham- bleton, residing at Ashford, near Bakewell, Derbyshire. He is well known iu Leicester, having resided there. Information to Mr. Supt. Thos. Peberdy, LOUGHBOP. OUGII, Leicestershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., July 18. Stolen from a jeweller's shop at Portsmouth, about 4 p. m. on 12th instant :— about 20 ladies' gold Keeper Rings, some ' Mizpahs,' some buckles, and some ordinary, all 18 carat; 12 do. do. wide buckle, do., 9 carat; about 100 do. do. ' Mizpahs/ buckles, and ordinary, all 9 carat, some may be set with blue or red stones. These Rings all have the jeweller's private ( price) marks; one or more of the following letters being scratched inside each, to indicate the value—' A, G, O, L, D, S, M. I, T, H.' By 2 men of the following descrip- tion :— one about 22 or 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, light brown hair, fair complexion, iong thin face, large nose, clean shaven, and slight build ; dressed in hard black felt hat, dark cloth overcoat, and dark trousers ; and the other 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light brown hair, fair complexion, long thin face, pointed chin, high cheek bones, clean shaven, rather long neck, square shoulders, medium build, stoops slightly and walks with long stride and swinging gait; dressed in blaek felt hat and dark clothes. Both are of fairly respectable appearance. They entered the shop separately, and the short man engaged the attention of the jeweller whilst the other committed the rob- bery. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Central Police Station, PORTSMOUTH.— Bytc- stre°. t, July 16. Stolen on 13th instant, in Oswestry :— a pair of cotton Sheets. By a tramp, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, sallow complexion, high cheek bones, long features, hair cut short; dressed in an old brown or dark grey cloth jacket, and trousers of similar material, and an old brown oillycock hat, turned up at sides, aud old lace- up boots. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Gough, or Sergeant Morris, OSWESTRY, Salop.— Jon- street, July 16. Absconded from Llandovery on 7th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing a double cased gold lever hunting Watch, maker's name— Gray, Sackville Street, crest on outer case a raven, loop missing, or may have a common one in ; also a lady's gold Geneva Watch, which had been entrusted to him to repair : — CH AS. HENRY MOORE, a watch maker, 46 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark com- plexion, hair, whiskers and moustache, which is turning grey, shaved on chin, bald on front part of head, square shoulders, very short neck, stoutly built, and a big wide nose turning up ; supposed to be a native of Manchester ; speaks very loud witti a broad Yorkshire accent ; dressed in a light snull' coloured suit, aud black bowler hat ( all new). He has been in the army for 12 years, has an uncle named H Pomfritt, who is a watch and clock maker in Manchester1, and a brother named Moore, residing in Stratford Road, Hulme, Manches- ter, who keeps a large curiier's shop. Stolen on the night of the 11th instant, from off a clothes line at the Marsh, near Wellington, Salop:— a man's Shirt, striped blue red and white, nearly new, lined with unbleached calico across the shoulders; and a red cotton Handkerchief, ha9 been darned in the middle with black cotton. Supposed by a tramp about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion and whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes aud hard rouud blaek hat. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Ivies' WELLINGTON, Salop.— Bow- sireet, July 16. 8- P O L I C E GAZETTE. Charged with the theft of il08 9s. Id. :— PATRICK VALENTINE KING, a cashier, about25 years of age, 5 fee 8 inches high, dark hair, parted in centre, heavy reddisb moustache, otherwise clean shaved, pale complexion, some pimples on nose and face, narrow chin ; dressed in a dark worsted shooting coat, occasionally wears a light overcoat, and black felt hat; a native of Ireland, and speaks with slight Irish accent; resided iu lodgings at 17, Tureen- street; absconded on 10th instant, and believed to be making for Boston, where he has got friends. Information to A. McCall, Chief Constable, GLASGOW.— Bow- street, July 16. Stolen on 9th instant, at Waterferry, Oxon a man's light brown waterproof Jacket, double stitched rouud the collar, the liniog has been patched under the arms. By a man between 30 and 40 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, sandy whiskers ; dressed iu a short white slop, cord trousers, and cap with knob on crown. Information to Mr. Fernsby, Deputy Chief Constable, or to Inspector Sutton, County Police Station, OXFORD.— Bow- street, July 16. Stolen at Brotton on 10ih instant!— a pair of man's elastic- side Boots, with tovcaps, neatly new ; a meerschaum Pipe, with silver ferule and jet mouthpiece ; and a silk Hand kerchief, wita blue aud white spots in it. By a man about 20 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, aud stoat figure ; goes tiamping about the couu- try p'aying a tin whistle ; dressed in black cloth coat, blue guernsey underneath, old dark trousers, Scotch cap with peak, and the stolen boots.
