Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Nome is given, it is indispensably necessary that in information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on Watr Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, MAIDENHEAD.— Bow- street, July 11, Stolen from the person of the Hon. and Rev. J. H. Nelson, at the Agricultural Show, at Newbury, on 19th ult. : — a |- plate open- face gold lever Watch, enamel dial, maker Chas. Frodsliam, No. 03012. Supposed by three men, on « of wliom was apprehended same evening at Didcot, in the act of attempting to pick a lady's pocket, and for which offence lie has been committed for 6 weeks hard labour to H. M Prison, at Oxford. This man gave the name of JOHN THOMPSON, of Bath, 52 years of age, looks younger, 5 feet inches high, sharp features, fresh complexion, keen look, face shaved clean with the exception of a heavy moustache of rather a red tinge ; dressed in black frock coat, buttoned over, and bard felt hat; after his conviction, this man addressed a letter to his wife at 90, Green- street, Old Ford, London, E.: bis wife's sister ( Mrs. Cullum), resides at 90, Green- street, Bethnal Green, London, and it has since been ascertained that prisoners proper name is JOHN LOOK. Supposed k" own to Metropolitan Police, and to be wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Prisoner's two companions cannot bo described. Information to Mr. Supt. Bennett, Berks Constabulary, NEWBURY.— Bow- street, July 9. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Found on the beach at Hove, on the morning of 9th instant, the dead Body of a Man apparently about 60 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches long, blown hair turning grey, full beard, whiskers and moustache same colour ; dressed in black cloth lrock coat, black cloth vest, dark tweed trousers with light mixture, has varicose veins in one leg, for which he appeared to be wearing an elastic stocking, and had on one low shoe. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Breach, Town Hall, HOVE, Sussex.— Bow- street, July 13. The Dead Body of a full- grown female Child was found in a box at the Angel Hotel, Peterborough, on 6th instant. The box containing the body was sent by passenger train at 1210 p. m. on 22nd May, 1883, from Euston Station, L. & N, W. Ry., London, addressed thus : ' Mr. Jones,< Angle Hotell, Bridge Street, Peterborough, G. N. R.', on an ordinary labeL The box and contents were delivered at the Angel Hotel on the same date, where it has been kept ever since by the boots, who paid 8d. on the box. The box is an old fancy soap box, 13 inches long, 8 inches wide, and 4 inches deep, and has on the side ' Superior Emollient Glycerine Soap.' The body was wrapped in a piece of a woman's calico chemise, and the leg of a pair of woman's drawers with 5 narrow tucks. An Inquest has been held, which stands adjourned till 16th inst. The body was so putrid that the doctor was unable to say whether the Child had been born alive. Information to James Hurst, Head Constable, Police Station, PETERBOROUGH. — Bow- street, July 9. FORGERY. Description of WILLIAM DYER, alias GRAHAM, supposed native of London or Southampton, who is charged on a warrant for Forging a Cheque for X3 16s., at Exmouth, Devon, on 30th May last:— he calls on grocers, bakers, and silversmiths, representing that he is travelling for Thompson and Thompson, 22, Upper Marsh, Lambeth, London, selling electro- nickel deposit for cleaning plate ; he is about 39 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, ruddy complexion, round features, light eyes, sandy hair and whiskers, and small moustache ; dressed in a rusty drab suit, a light pepper- and- salt colour overcoat, high silk hat, and elastic side boots. Wears a gold ring on little finger of right hand. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, EXETER, who holds warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, July 6. Wanted in Aberdeen, for forging or uttering a forged bank cheque for £ 46, on 23rd ultimo:— SAMUEL E. LOBLEY, about 24 years of age, native of England, but it is said that he has resided for several years in America, pretends to be a cattle- dealer, but has the appearance of a commercial traveller, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slender make, pale com- plexion, oval face, light brown hair, appears soft and fine, no whiskers or moustache ; dr « ssed iu black worsted coat and BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of burglary, at Marshtield, during the night of 8th instant:— a black cloth twill ( double- breasted) Coat, pockets on hips, ticket pocket, and outside breast pocket ; 2 pairs of Boots— one pair elastic sides, nearly new, marked ' William Bowley,' on lining inaide,— the other light lace- up, toe- capped, recently half soled ; an ivory Opera- glass ; white silk Mufflers— one marked ' William Bowley' in corner ; a tobacco Pouch ; a wood Pipe ; a red Handkerchief ; a hard bowler Hat; and a bunch of Keys with brass plate attached, and the name of ' Wm. Bowley' marked on it. The Top Coat ( above- mentioned) was found pledged in Bri « tol the following morning, by a man about 26 or 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark brown hair, little or no whiskers ; supposed to be wearing the other stolen Coat, bowler Hat, and a pair of the Boots, also a dirty pair of cord trousers; has the | appearance of| a carpenter or painter, tramping the country. Information to Mr. Supt. Matthews, FISHPONDS, or P. C. Edwards, MARSHFIELD, Gloucestershire. — Bow- street, July 13. Stolen during the night of 4th instant:— a man's black cloth worsted morning Coat, cloth covered buttons, pockets in laps behind, ticket pocket right side, one outside left breast, one inside right breast, black Italian lining, and print do. in sleeves, and tab inside collar without name on ; a man's black cloth worsted Jacket, round, 4 pockets outside, one inside, black Italian linings, cloth covered buttons, ' J. Barlow, St. Petersgate, Stockport,' on tab inside collar ; a pair of man's lace- up watertight Boots, size 9, strap broken at back of one boot; a black hard felt Hat, narrow curl; a white cotton Muffler, with silk stripes in. By a man, 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes and hair, going bald, native of Ireland, and is very fond of drink. Well educated, but very dissipated. Information to Boro' Police Office, STOCKPORT.— Bow- street, July 11. Wanted on a charge of housebreaking at Wing, Bucks, on 6th instant:— a man, 40 to 50 years of ago, short and stout, very much sunburnt, has full light beard and whiskers, rather prominent nose ; dressed in black cloth coat and' black hard felt hat. Pawned a portion of the stolen property in Luton, on morning of 7th instant. Still unrecovered, a pan- black cloth Trousers, a black cloth Vest, an old white calico Shirt, a red and black plaid Scarf, and a pair lace- up Boots with tips on heels and lightly nailed. Information to Inspector Sutton, Bucks Constabulary, LINSLADE, Leighton Buzzard.— Bono- street, July 11. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Crickmery, near Wistanswick, Salop : — a pepper- and- salt coloured cloth Jacket, single- breasted, and pockets outside hips with flaps a pair of Trousers of same material as jacket, dark metal buttons and fly- fronts; a single- breasted black cloth Vest, hole burnt in left- hand pocket from pipe, and has been repaired with a piece of black cloth ; a double- breasted black cloth Vest, very large size; a white diaper Vest; a white cotton Handkerchief with coloured border; and a pair of cotton Braces. Information to Mr. Supt. Howells, WHIT CHURCH, or to Sergeant Merricks, MARKET DRAYTON, Salop. — Bow- street, July 9. The two men wanted at Middlesbrough, for shop- breaking, on the night of 4th instant, and advertised in Police Gazette of 6tb instant, have been arrested by the Leeds Police, and most of the stolen property recovered. The Watch and some of the Clothing are still wanted. Information to E, J. Saggerson, Chief Constable, MIDDLESBROUGH. — Bow- street, Jvly 9. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Sparkhill, on 1st instant 6 silver Tea Spoons, marked ' N. P.'; 2 silver Table Spoons ; 3 silver Salt Spoons ; 5 large and 5 small white- handled Knives, marked ' Southern and Richards': Carving Kuive and Fork, and plated Toast Rack. Informa- tion^ Mr. Supt. Yardley, ACOCKS GREEN, neur Birmingham. — Bow- street, July 6. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING^ The bay yearling cart Filly, advertised in Police Gazette of 9th instant, as stolen from off Stow- Fen, Bungay, has been found, and r- estored to the owner.— Bow- street, July 13. Stolen from a field on Woodhou3e Farm, near Knightor, Radnoi'jhire, between 1st and 5th instant:— Six 3- year ola Ewes, half- bred Sout. hdowus, shorn in May last, and their Lambs, weaned about three weeks, marked with the letter ' P'in pitch in half circle on left hip. £ 5 reward will be paid by Mr. Profcert on thj> recovery of the Sheep and con- viction of the thief. Iufqimation to Mr. David Rogers, Inspector, KNIGHTON, Radnorshire.— Bow- street, July 11. Obtained on 3rd instant, by false pretences :— a roan Cob, 15 hands high, tender feet, good looking ; a silver- plated Harre3S,& nd a ( ioomsheck Dog Cart, painted green, picked out light green, near front scroll iron broken, mended with leather strap ( not recovered). By a man who gave the name of ' Riches, 180, Tooley Street' ( false), 30 years of age, 5 ft. 4 inches high, dark whiskers and moustache; dressed in dark tweed suit, round black hard felt hat. Warrant, issued. In- formation to The Director of Criminal Investigations, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, July 11. Stolen at Newton Heath, between 9 p. m., 3rd, and 6 a. m. 4th instant :— a black Horse, with one white fetlock and star on foTeliead, about 15| hands high, 7 years old ; had on a brass- mounted bridle and leather reins. Information to County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, Manchester.— Bow- street, July 6. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT * Stolen from a dwelling- house at Stockport Borough, about 5 p. m. ou 11th instant :— a gentleman's silver lever Watch, No. 17337, nearly new, value £ b. Supposed by a tramp, about 56 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high ; dressed in black hard felt hat, far worn, and dark jacket and shoes ( far worn). Stolen from a lodging- house :— a blue silk Handkerchief, plain, nearly new. Supposed by a lodger who left the house on 10th instant, at 6' 30 a m. Information to J. B. Staples, Lt.- Col., Chief Constable, STOCKroRT.— Bow street, July 13. Absconded, charged with embezzlement: — GEORGE FREDK. BARTON, Expiree Office, No. 18,000, 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 jiaches high, dark complexion ( flushed), dark brown hair and moustache, hazel eyes, moles on left cheek, left side of chin, and left elbow and arm, scars under lip and back of neck, has a habit of twitching his eyes when talking ; dressed in, black cutaway coat, and high hat ; wife residei at 38, Maryland Road, Paddington. Warrant issued. Infor- mation to The Director of Criminal Investigations, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, S. W.— Bow- tireet, July 13. Charged on suspicion with stealing at Burton; between 2nd and 8th instant, a black cloth Jacket, pockets outside on hips, black cloth buttons, lined with black cloth, except the sleeves, which are believed to be lined with pink and white stuff; a black cloth double- breasted Vest, lined with same material as sleeves of jacket, three pockets and three buttons on each side; a pair black cloth Trousers, fall fronts and black metal buttons, all in good repair :— a navvy, 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, sandy hair, cut short, strong build, clean shaved, except slight sandy moustache, rather long face, native of ( supposed) Leek, Staffordshire; dress— cord trousers, strong lace- up boots, black and white plaid vest, old dark pilot jacket, and old dark cap. Information to Mr. Supt. Gilbride, BURTON- ON- TRENT.— bow- street, July 13. HUGH WHITBY, alias NIXON, described in Police Gazette of 7th February last, as wanted at Ellesmere, Salop, for larceny from a dwelling- house, has been apprehended and sentenced to six weeks.— Bow- street, July 13. Charged with embezzlement:— DAVID HERBERT LAWRENCE, No. 15, Charseley- road, Catford Bridge, Kent, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair ( cut, short) and moustache, sailow complexion, sharp piercing eyes, acquiline nose ; dressed in black cutaway coat and vest, light tight- fitting trousers, high black hat, generally wears a belt, no braces; likely to visit luaning ground*, a clerk and canvasser. Information to the Inspector on duty, Police Station, BRIDEWELL- PLACE, London, City, E. C.— Bow street, July 13. Description of GEORGE MYATT, charged with em- bezzling £ t 6f. 6d. at Burton- on- Trent:— a butcher, 28 yeais of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, sandy moustache, no whiskers, blue eyes, stout build, native of Little Haywood, near Stafford ; dressed in a blue' serge jacket with black velvet collar, blue trousers, lace- up boots, and low hard felt hat. He is a man of dissipated habits, and is likely to be found in a brothel or in company with prostitutes. Information to Mr. Supt. Gilbride, BURTON- ON- TRENT.— Bow- street, July 13. Stolen at Slough, on 12th instant:— a sm?. ll gold Geneva 216 POLICE GAZETTE. August 3 Watch, No. 7517, with ribbon attached ; a silver lever Watch, and a lady's gold diamond Ruig. By a woman, about 30 years of agt, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, rather high cheek bones, black hair, cut short all over head ; dressed in a black satin dress, trimmed with lace, | black velvet Jacket, without trimmiug, and a black chip hat with a feather ; she stated that she was a cook out of a situation, and came from near Reading. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunham, Police Station, SLOUGH, Bucks.— Bow street, July 13. Stolen frcm Thorley Church during the night of 7th or morning of 8th instant:— a white linen Communion Cloth, marked'LH. E.' in the centre of a circle in centre of cloth, and a spot of mildew on the side; a white linen Napkin, marked the same aa Communion Cloth; one pound of Composite Candles, and a velvet cushion Brush. Stolen from Thorley School, on the same night:— a dozen poetry Reading Books ; 21 dozen of History Books, Whitehall Series ( Staudards 3rd and 4tb) ; a gross of Exercise Books ; 5 dozen omall Exercise Books ; 2 dozen Table Books ; 2 dozen Home Lesson Grammar Books ; 2 dozen Arithmetic Books ; 2 dozen Penholders ; 2 boxes of Nibs— one box marked ' 351 Gillett'; a quantity of Envelopes and Writing Paper ( black edge), and 2s. worth of Postage Stamps; a dozen of Chemise*, different sizes ; a dozen of Pinafores; 2 dozen of ornamented Pocket Handkerchiefs ; a dozen of wool Cuffs, knitted ; 4 dozen of Sewing Cotton— colours red, white, blue and black ; various StockiDgs and Socks; 2 lb. of Scotch Yarn ; 1 lb. of white knitting Cotton, aud several packets of Needles. Also stolen from Daniel Reed's Marine Store Dealer, of Thorley :— an old pilot Jacket, dark blue, two pockets outside, and a very thin oran Bag. Supposed by four men travelling from Newmarket Races to LoDdun ; two about 5 feet 9 inches high, and two about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, from 20 to 23 years of age ; one dressed in a light suit and cap, the three others are in dark suits, all very shabby. Three of them carrying bundles, and all traced on the road to Roydon, Essex, making their way to London by Walthamstow. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Ryder, County Constabulary Office, BISHOPS STORTFORD, Herts.— Bow- street, July 11. Stolen from the Mardy, near Abergavenny, between 3rd and 8th instant:— a black worsted cloth Jacket and Waist- coat, and a pair of dark mixture Trousers, all nearly new, would fit a man about 5 feet 4 inches high. Supposed by a navvy, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 6 inches high, stout figure, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, and full eyes ; dressed in dark monkey jacket, torn in frout, two rows of white buttons, double- breasted moleskin vest, cord trousers, soft billycock hat, and good navvy boots ; he is a native of Staffordshire, and talks loud and broad. Information to Mr. Supt. Freeman, ABERGAVENNY.— fiom- st., July 11. Charged " with stealing three One PouDd Scotch Bank Notes, and a silver Guaid Chain :— EDWARD HORTON or HORTER, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 ins. high, light brown hair, no beard or whiskers, sallow complexion, stout build, and scar on left arm ( recent); dressed in dark corded coat, having two outside pockets with lids, dark corded vest and trousers, lacing shoes with gutta percha soles, brownish tweed cap, shaped like a low crowned hat, and light coloured muffler or neckerchief; English accent; said he came from Lancashire, near Liverpool; could milk cows, but had not the appearance of a farm servant. Information to the Inspector, County Constabulary, GREENOCK, who holds warrant.— Bow- street, July 11. Charged with stealing Brass ( recovered) at Hednesford, on 22nd ultimo :— WILLIAM GRIFFITH, a carter, native of Lower Gornal, 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, and medium build ; dressed in black hat, sleeved vest, tight- fitting cord trousers, and stroDg lace- up boots ; and JOHTF HANDLEY, a carter, native of Hednesford, 19 years of age, 6 feet high, dark complexion and hair, thin, and round shouldered ; dressed in black, billy- cock hat, dark jacket and trousers, and strong lacs- up boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Hackney, BROWNHILLS, nr. Walsall, or to Sergeant Whalley, Police Station, HEDNESFORD, who holds warrant.— Bow- street, July 11. Description of JOHN SMITH, alias SPECTACLE JACK, or ARMY JOHN, wanted on warrant for stealing a Sovereign, at Rimij gton, on 27th ultimo :— he is 60 years of age, 5 feet 10 inchesnigh, fresh complexion, grey hair, grey whiskers, slender build, wnd supposed to be a native of Preston, Lancashire. Information to Mr. Supt. Inman, West Riding Constabulary, SETTLE, who holds warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 11. Charged with embezzlement:— JAMES J. O'NIEL, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, light complexion, cbin shaved clean, slight whiskers side of face, red birth mark on right side of nose, on top lip ; dressed in dark frock coat, light trousers, brown felt hat, ribbed on sides. Was lately employed as assistant in a music warehouse in Carnarvon, also been at Draper aud Company, Bold Street, Liverpool, and at the We of Man. He was heard of at South port on 6th instanl, and represented himself to be an agent in advance of an American company, and said he had engaged the town hall there. Information to the Chief Constable's Office, CAR- NARVON.— Bow->' reet, July 11. Stolen at L'. an Hirnant during the night of 6th iustant: — a grey mixture large size cloth Coat, with small striped inch square cross bar, pockets each side on hips, and one inside left breast, cloth buttons ( some of which were much wore) on breast and two behind, lined inside aud patched with different material opposite both pockets ou hips. Sup- posed by a man, from 25 to 30 years of age, about 5 feet ( j or 7 inches high, light sandy hair and moustache, no whiskers, fair complexion, turned his feet out when walking ; dressed iu old black cloth coat, dark grey cloth vest, cotton cord trouseis, cloth cap with peak, white handkerchief tied in sailor's knot on neck, and wore a pair laced- up clogs. He also carried a small bundle, in red handkerchief, with small white round spots, about the sizs of a pea. Stated that be came from Yorkshire, and was going to Llanwddyn Waterworks. In- formation to Mr Supt. Ellis WELSHPOOL ; or to P. C. Edward Hamer, Penybontfaur, via Oswestry.— Sow- street, July 11. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Malvern, on 5th instant, about 9 a. m. :— a pair of gentleman's Boots, leather fronts, kid tops, laced up with mohair laces, three hooks at top and pointed toecips, nearly new. Suspicion is attached to a tianp, who was beggiDg near the house, about 35 to 40 years ot age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rough- looking beard ; dressed in a brown coat, and wearing a brown cap with peak, dirty- looking appearance ; he is probably wearing the stolen boots, as a pair of old boots were found a distance from the place where he was seen. Information to Mr. Supt. Turner, UPTON- ON- SEVERN ; or to Sergeant C. Drury, MALVERN — Bow strect, July 9. Stolen from a cottage, at Whitchurch, on 7th inst.:— a pair of Boots, lace- up, brass lace holes, recently repaired at toes, one boot toe capped, square nails in heels Mxi fore parts, to tit a boy 12 yews old. By a tramping painter, about 60 years of age, medium height, dark hair, whiskers and moustache turning grey, looks ill, and lias a imitation ring tattooed on one finger ; dressed in long black cloth coat and trousers, very shabby, dirty white slop under, black and white plaided scarf, and soft cloth cap. Information to Mr. Supt. Howells, WHIT- CHURCH, Salop.— Bow- xtreet, July 9.
