C. %• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence chargcd, and an attested copy thereof, together with tho advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must he prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. • Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tne persons forwarding them. About 9 p. m. on 7th instant, three Hay Stacks, standing together, in a field near Cotton, parish of Stoke- upon- Trent, Salop, were discovered on fire, and consumed ; supposed an incendiary fire. Information to Mr. Supt. Howells, WHIT- CHURCH, or Sergeant Owen, WJSM, Salop.— Bow- street, May 11. FORGERY. Wanted, charged on a warrant with forging and uttering Bills of Exchange on the London and County Bank:— GEO. ROURKE ( late of 5, Wood Street Square, City, and 24, Highbury Grange, N.), 73 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stoutish build, white hair, very little or no whiskers, no beard, or moustache, and stoops when walking; well dressed. Information to Inspector McWilliam, City of Lon- don Police, Detective Department, 26, OLD JEWRY, London, E. C.— Bow- street, May 9. Wanted at Glasgow on a Sheriff's warrant, charged with forging the signature of his masters, Uacundor Brothers, stockbrokers, North- conrt, Royal Exchange, to a cheque for .£ 520, and cashing it in a bank at Glasgow, on 17th ultimo : — ALFRED ANDERSON, a clerk, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slender made, very dark brown hair, parted in centre and stands straight up iu front and rather short, barefaced, rather high cheekbones, hollow cheeks, dark eyes and a blue mark ( scar) about the size of a pea above right eye ; dressed in a short dark tweed coat, dark vest and trousers, and high- crowned black felt hat. Has with him a check tweed ulster of a yellowish colour, a black leather travelling bag, and a crooked walking- stick. Accused ab- sconded on 14th ultimo, taking the 9.15 p. m. traiu from Central Station ( Caledonian Railway) to London, where he presented on the following Jay three £ 100 notes, requesting change, and on being questioned ran off, leaving the notes in the Bank. It was his intention to proceed to Spain, via Paris. If he has left this country he may return, and be found spending money recklessly, or in destitute circum- stancee. Information to A. Stolen from the person at Edenbridge Steeple Chases, on 4th instant:— a Bilver lever Watch, has back hand?, and rather peculiar make, maker's cams— Jump, Bond Strset, LondoD. Number unknown. Information to Mr. Supt. A. Barnes, Police Court, TONBRIDQE.— Bow- street, May 11. Wanted on a warrant at Llanidloes, charged with larceny from the person, on 23rd ultimo : — RICHARD ASHTON, labourer, nativo of Llanidloes, about 19 years of age, about 5 feet high, fair complexion, full face, dark hair, stout built, bow legged when walking; dressed when he absconded in a short dark coat and vest, cotton cord trousers, strong lace- up boots, hard hat, wearing the same very much back on his head ; supposed gone to South Wales, seeking for work. Information to J. Danily, Chief Constable, NEW- TOWN, or to Sergeant J. Sibbald, LLANIDLOES, Montgomery- shire.— Bow- sti eet, May 7. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 7.30 and 9.30 p. m. 5th instant, at Victoria- road, Hale, near Altriccham, a house was broken and entered by prising bottom part of kitchen window aud breaking catch, during absence of family, and stolen therein :— a lady's gold lever Watch, and Guard attached, very small curb pattern, engine- turned case, No. 36034, white dial, maker's name ' McFerran, Manchestera gentleman's Bilver lever Watch ; aud £ 2 in Gold. Information to Mr. Supt. Leighton, County Constabulary, ALTRINCHAM, Cheshire.— Bow- street, May 7. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Wanted, charged with stealing a Pony and Trap, at Quinton, near Halesowen, on the night of 4th iustant :— a man, name unknown, about J9 years of age, about 5 ft. 6 ins. high, has a very slight mousAache ; dressed in a dirty jacket, and moleskin trousers, and had the appearance of a tramp. The Pony and Trap were found in Coventry, about four hours after being stolen, apparently abandoned by the thief. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Bardtnan, Police Station, OLDBUHI', Worcestershire.— Bow- street, May 11. Found near Shipston- on- Slour :— a bay Mare ( supposed stolen), 2 years old, 14 hands high, long mane and tail, apparently of Welsh breed, in good condition, and has been worked, suitable for a butcher or trap work. Information to Mr. Supt. Hinde, Police Station, SiiirsT0N- 0N- 3T0UR.— Bow- fireet, May 7. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Wanted, charged on a warrant with embezzlement:— H. G. TORRE, a clerk, of No. 40, Holland- street, Brixton, 23 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, little whiskers, moustache, and beard fair, and swaggering gait; dressed in dark chesterfield overcoat, dark trousers, and hard felt hat. Likely to visit his mother, Gloucester Villa, Genoa- road, Anerley, Surrey. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 26, OLD JEWRY, LONDON, E. C.— Ion- street, May 11. Description of JOHN BALDING, alias JOHN SCASE, charged on a warrant with stealing 13s. 6d,, also a pair of hunting Boots, without the tops, at Congham on 23rd ult. : — he is about 17 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, cut short ; dressed in brown mixture frock coat, vest and trcusers to match, low hard I lack hat, and wearing the stolen boots, he is a groom. Wanted at Dorby, charged on a warrant with embezzl- ing; the sum of £ 70 13s., the monies of his employers, Edward Smith and Co, Brick and Tile Makers, Coalville, near Leicester:— HENRY JAMES COOPER, a traveller, 30 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache, and strong build ; dresses well, and wears a silk hat : is of gentlemanly appearance. He resided at 19, Hickman Road, Birmingham, but was last heard of at the Carlton Hotel, Leicester. Is well known to builders and contractors at Birmingham, Leicester, Kettering, Northampton, and Wellingborongli. Information to W. A. Delacombe, Lt.- Col., Chief Constable, Town Ilall, DERBY.— Bow- street, May 11. Stolen about 8 a. m., on 8th instant, from No. 5, Thorus Terrace, West Worthing :— a I Cash Box, cont aining G Sove- reigns. By a tramping jeweller, a German, between 30 aud 40 years of age, 4 feet 6 inches high, light brown hair, parted in centre, bald on top of head, no whiskers, light moustache, and lost a front tooth in upper jaw ; dressed in grey trouecrs and vest, black jacket, much worn at sleeves, black broad tie, brown broad trimmed hat, heavy lace- up boots, and carried a dark twill umbrella. Information to Mr. Supt. Silvester, Police Station, WORTHING.— Bow- s'reet, May 11. Stolen from a dwelling- house, at Stockport. abput^ 2 p. m. 7th instant, 3 Sovereigns and 2 Half- Sovereigns. * By a young man who obtained lodgings, stating he w; is employed at tie stables at the Railway Station as stableman, and that he had been at Bolton 4 years and was transferred to Sheffield and afcerwards to here ; about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 incheii high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, medium build, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in corduroy round jacket, with pockels at sides and laps on them, cord trousers ' and vest, dirty, cloth cap with peak, black and white scarf, blu « plaid shirt, faded, heavy lace- up boots, and had the appearance of a carter. He booked by the 2.45 p. m. train to Manchester, L. and N. W. Ry., changing one Half- Sovereign. His mode of operation is to state that he was transferred with two others, who were out looking for lodgings, and was tired and wished to go to bed, and watched the opportunity of the owners leaving the house, he would then get up and abscond. Information to STOCKPORT Borough Police. — Bow- s. reet, May 9. Description of a man who gees by the name of SCOTTY, stands Buspected with having on 5th instant, at Brigp, stolen from the moulding shed of Mr. John Speight, foundryman, 3 brass Smoothers aud 3 steel Cleaners, tools used by moulders :— be is between 30 and 40 years of age, about 5 ft. 8 or 10 inches high, medium build, and walks very erect; dressed in moleskin trousers, srch as are worr. by moulders, very much marked at the knees, dark blue serge coat and vest, and fiat cloth cap, vith peak cf same mateiial ( black or brown). This man said he had been working for Messrs. Marshalls and Son, Gainsboro', and had been off work for a week, but had drawn his back pay on 5th instant, and came to Brigg by rail; he is making his way for the North, and left Brigg by the 6.25 p. m. traiu for Hull on 5th instant. JOSEPH DRAKEFORD, alias JOHN PRINCE, charged on a warrant with stealing Money at Berry Hill, Fenton, on 5th instant :— he is about 35 years of age, ,' » feet 3J inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, nearly bald on front of head, small light moustache, no whiskers, slender build, long features, small blue spot on cor- ner of left eye, blue scar on top of left shoulder, a collier, but has lately been working as a boiler fireman at different collieries ; dressed when he left in black cloth jacket and vest, white [ slop, moleskin trousers with patches of grease marks upon them, black hard felt hat, and clogs with thin soles. Was convicted at Stafford Quarter Sessions, Jan., 1882, and sentenced to 12 calendar months and 3 years police supervi- sion. Information to Mr. Supt. McWiiliams. Police Office, LONGTON, or Inspector Macrory, FENTON, Staffordshire, who h ids the warrant for his arrest. — Bvw- ftreel, May 9. Description of GEORGE MILES, a tramp, in custody, charged with stealing a Bed Quit, a Shirt, and a Handker- chief ( all recovered), at Kingsley, on 30th ultimo, and stands committed to the Ivuutaford Sessious on 28th instant:— 47 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, aud grey eyes; states he was discharged from the army Service Corps about 7 years since, and that he received his last allowance of pension on 7th April last, at Ridd, iu Berk- shire. Information to Mr. Supt. Naylor, Constabulary Office, OAKJIERK, Northwich, Cheshire.— Bow- street, May 7. Stolen from the Winchester College, on 26th ultimo, £ 10 in Gold and Silver. By a lad, 17 years of age, 5 feet 4£ ins. high, brown hair, bine eyes, fair complexion, stoutish build, and rather thick lips ; dressed in dark coat and vest, tweed trousers, and black hard felt hat; had iu his possession an old fashioned silver Watch, with steel Chain attached. Will most likely enlist in the array. Information to W. Morton, Head Constable, WINCHESTER, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bov- street, May 7. Absconded from Manchester, charged on warrant with embezzlement :-. TAMES HOWARD, 18 yrs. of age, 5 ft 5 or 6 iuches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair ; dressed iu dark biowu overcoat, shooting coat, tweed trousers, billy- cock hat, and shoes ; fond of low music halls. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Town Hall, MANCHESTER.— Bows', reel, May 7. Charged on warraut with stealing a Geneva Watch ( not recovered), hunter, crack on dial, and ' Bensou ' ruarktctoou inside case :— a travelling watch and clock cleaner, about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 4 iuches high, black hair, slight whisker, no moustache; dressed in daik coat, light grey trousers, hard felt hat, white apron ronnd his waist, carried tools with him maiked ' W. S.' This man is supposed to stay at lodging- houses in towns for a short time, and travel the surrouuding villages, obtaining watches to clean aud then absconding. Information to Mr. R. Fernsby, D. C. C., or Inspector Sutton, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- streer, May 7. Description of ALBEFiT JOHN COTTLE, merchant's clerk, wanted on warrant, charged with embezzling the sum of £ 11 15s. 6d. :— 29 j ears of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, dark bushy hair ; dressed in dark grey Chester- field, and hard black billycock hat; t. ikes long strides when walking ; supposed will endeavour to emigrate. Absconded from Birmingham, on 30th ultimo. Information to Joseph Farudale, E- q., Chief Constable, BIRMINGHAM — Bow- street, May 7. Stolen about 8 a. m. on 5t. h instant, from a dwelling- house is Oswestry :— a round ribbed black cloth Jacket two pockets 011 hips with flaps, one ditto outside left breast ; a Waistcoat of same material, with watch pocket; aud a pair of light cloth Trousers, with fly fronts, Ml in very good condi- tion. Supposed by a man who had been lodging in the house three nights, and stated he was a saddler, about 22 or 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 iuches high, dark complexion, black moustache, slender buiid, and prominent front teeth ; dressed in a black cloth ribbed jacket, brown mixture cloth trousers, black hard lovind felt hat wiib band round it » s if in mourning, high lace- up boots with toecapi. Said his father was a brother to William*, earthenware deVer, Wvleeop. May 11 Shrewsbury, and that he has relations keeping a confectioner s shop near " the ' Elephant and Castle,' and Cattle Mardol, Shrewsbury. Information to Mr. Supt. Gongh, OSWESTRY. — Bow- street, May 7. Stolen from a public- house, at Penkridge, on lst instant: a pair of pebble Glasses, with white metal rims, and .1 table Knife, makers name on blade ' Joseph Haywood, SheiSeld,' and black handle. Supposed by a woman, a tramp, about 40 yrs. of age, 5] feet high, dark, stoutish build ; dressed in black dress and jacket, black and white stripped shawl, dirty white straw bonnet, trimmed with red ribbon, and a red flower in front. She was traced into Wolverhampton. Information to Captain Oawell, Deputy Chief Constable, STAFFORD.— Bow- street, May 7. Stolen at Bloxham College, Oxon, on 27tb ultimo^-— 18 white Pocket Handkerchiefs, twelve marked ' Green' in black letters, with a cross in the corner in black ink, three • Shattock,' and the other three ' Bartlett,' in black letters ; also an old jean Jacket, with four brass buttons in front. Supposed by two men of the following description :— one is 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, sandy whiskers, and sallow complexion ; dressed i.. cord trousers, light slop, red neckerchief, and white soft billycock hat; the other is 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark hair, aandy whiskers and moustache , dressed in fustian trousers, dark pilot jacket, and hard black billycock hat; had the appearance of being discharged from the army. Information to Mr. Supt. Wyatt, County Police Station, BANBURY — Bow- strett, May 4. Stolen from Melbouro, on the night, of 28th ultimo :— a brick Trowel, marked ' A. II,' under the handle ; a spirit Level, with a piece of brass at " ach end ; a pair of Lines and Pins; a white linen Jacket, two outside pocktts, only one button on jacket; a pair of elastic- side Boots, tips on heels and sprigged soles, the right boot is broken from the welts on the outside. Supposed by a tramping bricklayer who aiked for work, and after the robbery left his own boots behind, which can be identified ; he is between 40 and 50 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, and rather round- shouldered, sandy hair, whiskers and moustache, bald on top of head, and freckled hands ; dressed in long black ribbed coat, fustian trousers, black felt hat; supposed to be wearing the stolen boots ; was traced to Cambridge, where he exchanged his hat for cap with peak ; stated ha had worked at Harlow. Information to W. Dade, Supt. of Police, ARP. INGTON, Cambs.— Bm- street, May 4. Stolen on the lst instant, from 84, Bourne Street, East- bourne, Sussex :— a pair of men's lace- up Boots, of light make, tips on heels, aud brads in soles, with toecaps, slightly worn. By a man who had lodged in the house about a week, and absconded on the morning of the robbery, he is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, . lather large full grey eyes, light brown hair, no whiskers, medium figure, has a large scar on side of neck ; dressed in dark cap with peak of same material, grey coat, blaok vest, corduroy trousers and elastic- side boots, or he may be wearing the Btolen ones, and woollen neckerchief with star in centre and figures of soldiers on horses playing polo, on border. Supposed to be a native of Bournemouth, has recently been discharged from the army, and has in his possession a number of photos of black women, brought from India. Absconded, charged with felony:— JOHN HENRY JENKINS, alias JOHN HENRY WILLIAMS JENKINS, a lecturer on secular and religious subjects, 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, beard aud moustache, turning grey, slightly round shouldered; dressed, black cloth frock coat, black vest, light overcoat. May be found amongst Salvation Army, Young Men's Christian Association, or Temperance Lecture Halls. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Crimiual Investigations. GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, S. W,— Metropolitan Police, May 9. FRAUDS AID AGGRAVATED . MISDEMEANOURS. Description of CHARLES BELSHAW, or BELSHER, late in the employ of Mr. George Smith, grocer, wanted here on a warrant, charged with obtaining several sums of money under false pretences:— he is abont 35 years of age, 5 feet 7i inches high, dark brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, has a cist in right eye; dreseed in dark tweed coat, light troupers wsth stripe down sides ; a grocer by trade, will be likely to se< ik employment as assistant; has a wife aud five children, the eldest, a boy about 10 years of age ; is a native of Oxfordshire ; his mother is supposed to be living at Oxford; has a brother, a grocer, at Worcester; has been in business for hftimelf in Leeds and failed. Information by wire to the Supt. of Police, Police Station, MANSFIELD.— Bow- itreet, May 7. Description of EDWIN EDGE, butcher, of No. 73, PeSkhall- street, Newcastle, Staffordshire, remanded to H. M. Prison, Shrewsbury, until 4th instant, charged with fraud :— he is a^ out 38 years of age, 5 feet 0 inches high, brown hair, small light mon^ cbe and imperial, grey eye3, and oval visage. He has been in the habit of attending fairs in Salop and adjoining counties ; after purchasing cattle, & c., from the auctioneers, he pays a small portion of the purchase- money in cash and fills up a cheque for the remainder on the Branch of the Manchester Liverpool District Banking Com- pany, at Newcastle, Staffordshire, Limited, and on their being presented it is discovered that there is no assets. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Howell?, County Constabulary Office, WHITCHURCH, Sdlop.- Bow- street, May 4. Obtained by means of false pretences, at Dawley, Salop, on 23rd ultimo :— A pair of men's new strong naiied Boots ( recovered). Also on 24th ultimo, a new pilot cloth Coat, navy- blue colour, serge lining, ti pocket with flap on each out- side, a large inside pocket in lining on left side ; a pair new drab coloured moleskin trousers, tall fronts, bone buttons; a new sirgle- breasted white moleskin Vest, five small bone buttons. By a man, 55 to 60 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high ; dressed in the above clothes, or an old black cloth coat, light cotton cord trousers, patched on knees, and old strong boots. He is a native of Dawley, Salop, but has been away over 30 years, and working as labourer in ironworks at Manchester, Warrington, and Wigan, and is believed to be the same person advertised in Police Gazette of 27th ultimo, as wanted for a similar offence at Warrington. He is a good scholar, and writes letters purporting to be sent by persons of position in the neighbourhood. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Ivies, WELLINGTON ; or P. S, Lsngford, DAWLEI;, Salop.—£ ow- stree', May 4. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Committed for trial from Tunbridge Wells, charged with stealing a Coat from a shop :— WILLIAM ( or JAMES) MOORE, 60 years of age, 5 feet 7! inches high, brown hair, turning grey, blue eyes, fair complexion, light moustache, broken nose, scars on shoulders, and a scai from a burn on pit of stomach, a native of Cork, and looks like an old soldier. And WM. DIXON, 42 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair, bald on top, blua eyes, sallow complexion, dark whiskers, and moustache ; has crossed flags on left arm, and flowers on right, arm, a native of Liverpool, has been a soldier, and now a labourer. Information to the Chief of Police, TUNBRIDGE WELLS .- Bow- street, May 11. Remanded at the Polise Station, Droxford, on a charge of stealing Sheep Shins during the night of 2nd instant : — THOMAS BUTTON, 61 veais of age, 5 feet 7i inches high, grey hair and eyes, fresh complexion, born at Landport, a hawker, and is of military appearance ; marks— bald on top of head, cut mark top of forehead, mole top of right shoulder and back of right shoulder blade, tattooed ring on third finger of left hand, moustache, but otherwise clean shaved ; dressed in brown hard bowler hat, long brown cloth coat, dark brown tweed vest, cord trousers, blue chsek shirt, and red and black scarf and lace boots, cut in front. Was convicted at the Nottingham Assizes on edges iu Vandyke pattern, and has a forget me not at the top; 17th July, 1875, and sentenced to 10 years ponal servitude the other is a round one, made to pass over the hand, with an imitation buckle.
