CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputei Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are net known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Tht Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, aj jrroperty that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6918 ^ FRIDAY, MAY 4, 1883. Kotice.— It ii requested that all communication! for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or itolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that ui information should he made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, alB l. ette « % addressed to the Editor wast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not he made. The Names and Descriptions of DeserterB from the Army, and at Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded an War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. • Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The • mount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. < 8). The person by whom it will he paid. They should he signed or accompanied by a letter, v signed by tae persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without ihe apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and PC LICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. Wanted at Glasgow on a Sheriff's warrant, charged with forging the signature of his masters, Uacundor Brothers, stockbrokers, North- conrt, Royal Exchange, to a cheque for £ 520, and cashing it in a bank at Glasgow, on 17th ultimo : — ALFRED ANDERSON, a clerk, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slender made, very dark brown hair, parted in centre and stands straight up in front and rather short, barefaced, rather high cheekbones, hollow cheeks, dark eyes and a blue mark ( scar) about the size of a pea above right eye ; dressed iu a short dark tweed coat, dark vest and trousers, and high- crowned black felt hat. Has with him a check tweed ulster of a yellowish colour, a black leather travelling bag, and a crooked walking- stick. Accused ab- sconded on 14th ultimo, taking the 9.15 p. m. train from Central Station ( Caledonian Railway) to London, where he presented on the following day three .£' 100 notes, requesting change, and on being questioned ran off, leaving the notes in the Bank. It was his intention to proceed to Spain, via Paris. If he has left this country he may return, and be found spending money recklessly, . or in destitute circum- stances. Information to A. McCall, Chief Constable, GLAS- GOW.— Bow- street, May 4. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person, on 25th instant, at Cambridge : — a gold lever watch, old- fashioned, No. 11448 and on the dial plate ' 448,' has ' Made by John Moncas, Liverpool,' on j- plate, in small capitals, and round the keyhole a left handed arrow, engraved with the words ' Wind up,' in capitals. Information to Mr. W. G. Turrall, Chief of Palice, CAMBRIDGE.— Bow- street, April 30. Stolen from the person at Shrub Hill Railway Station, on the 19th instant: — a gentleman's gold lever open faced Watch, No. 42821, white dial, sunk seconds, and steel hands. By a man, about 30 years of age, very pale face, small light moustache, and dressed in dark clothes. Information to the Head Constable, City Police Office, WORCESTER.— Bow- street, April 27. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 8' 30 and 9' 30 pm. on 23rd instant :— an English silver Lever Watch, No. 243, maker's name inside ' Robert Jones, Amlwch ,' and £ 6 in Gold, from a farm- house called Rhoswen, Llanwenllwyfs, near Amlwch, Anglesey. Information to Sergeant Thomas Jones, AMLWCH.— Bow- street, April 30. Stolen at Batt's Green, Shirley, by means of house- breaking, between 2 and 4 p. m., 26th instant :— a silver hunting Watch, enamel dial, plain cases, a place in the centre of outside front case for initials, glass cracked ; a silver albert watch Guard, having a silver whistle and key attached ; a gold finger Ring, mounted with three pearls and two pink stones; a gold wedding Ring; a gold keeper ring, engraved edges ; a pair of gold Earrings, the drops having the shape of acorns, one of the rings has been repaired with a piece of silver wire; a silver Brooch and Earrings to match ; 2 pairs of gold Earrings ; a Brooch, having on the front ' Lizzie.' Supposed by a man of military appearance, 30 years of age, 5 ft. 6 ins. high, dark complexion, dark hair, no whiskers, small moustache; dress, pepper and salt jacket and vest, dark trousers, and dark hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, MAIDENHEAD.— Bow- street, April 30. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen between 25th and 26th instant, from Wanstead Flats :— a black Filly, 15 hands, 4 years old, ' W. H.' in- distinctly branded on near shoulder. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, GBEAT SCOTLAND YARD, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, April 30. Description of a bay Male, left at Stables in Manchester on 14th instant, supposed stolen : — aged, 15 hinds high, white saddle marks, white mark down forehead, iu giod condition, legs apparently sound, and belly clipped. By a man, middle age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stout build, nose disfigured from piece being taken out, and impediment iu speech. Informa- tion to the Deputy Chief Constable, MANCHESTER.— Bcw- street, April 27. Stolen on 11th instant, from Ealing :— a bay Pony, 12 hands high, hog mane, short tail, star on forehead, and fetlocks white, legs recently clipped, slightly deformed in rump, in good condition ; brass mounted Harness ; a village Cait with well, painted black, picked out green, blue cloth Cushion, imitation sealskin Rug, lined red cloth, and a brown dropthong"; Whip. By GEORGE STEVENS, 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, florid complexion, full face, stout build, slight moustache ; dressed in brown overcoat, hard felt hat, appearance of a heavy drinker. Supposed well known at Watford and in Hertfordshire. Was seen going through Bushy on 11th instant. Warrant issued. Ii formation to the Director of Criminal Investigations, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD. — Metropolitan Police, April 27. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen on 26th ultimo, a double row, ruby and rose, lady's gold diamond Ring ( since recovered) :— by a woman about 26 years of age, medium height, fresh complexion and light ginger hair, stout built; dressed in a light drab ulster, and a black bonnet, and stated that she was going to Manchester, and gave tue name of MARY ROBINSON. Information to Alexander Millar, Head Constable, DEWSHURY.— Bow- street, May 4. Wanted ou warrant, charged as a bailee with stealing at New Bradwe'l, on 26th ultimo, a Chimney Sweeping Machine, 12 rods, each rod is marked ' J. Banks':— HENRY CROSS, a tramping chimney sweep, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, whiskers and moustache ; dressed in a black pilot jacket, black cloth trousers, and a large soft black billy- cock. Is a native of Paulerspury, Northamptonshire; has been convicted of felony. Was traced to Dunstable on the evening of 28th ultimo; he had been working with the Machine in the villages, and miy still be doing so, or may sell it and obtain work with some sweep. Has worked a good deal in the lower parts of Oxfordshire, and was com- mitted at Chipping Norton about 4 years back for larceny. Information to Inspector J. Moore, NEWPORT PAGNELL, Bucks.— Bow- street, May 4. Stolen at Bloxham College, Oxon, on 27th ultimo :— 18 white Pocket Handkerchiefs, twelve marked ' Green' in black letters, with a cross in the corner in black ink, three ' Shattock,' and the other three ' Bartlett,' in black letters; also an old jean Jacket, with four brass buttons in front. Supposed by two men of the following description :— one is 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, sandy whiskers, and sallow complexion ; dressed L. cord trousers, light slop, red neckerchief, and white soft billycock hat; the other is 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark hair, sandy whiskers and moustache , dressed in fustian trousers, dark pilot jacket, and hard black billycock hat; had the appearance of being discharged from the army. Information to Mr. Supt. Wyatt, County Police Station, BANBURY.— Bow- stre't, May 4. Stolen from Melbourn, on the night of 28th ultimo:— a brick Trowel, marked ' A. H.' under the handle; a spirit Level, with a piece of brass at each end ; a pair of Lines and Pins ; a white linen Jacket,, two outside pnektts, only one button on jacket ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, tips on heels and sprigged soles, the right boot is broken from the welts on the outside. Supposed by a tramping bricklayer who asked for work, and after the robbery left his own boots behind, which can be identified ; he is between 40 and 50 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, and rather round- shouldered, sandy hair, whiskers and moustache, bald on top of head, and freckled hands ; dressed in long black ribbed coat, fustian trousers, black f « lt hat ; supposed to be wearing the stolen boots ; was traced to Cambridge where he exchanged his bat for cap with peak ; stated ha had worked at Harlow. Information to W. Dade, Supt. of Police, ARRINGTON, Camb?.— Byv.- s. reit, May 4. Absconded from Leicester, on 30th ultimo, wanted on warrant on a charge of embezzling about .£ 50, the moneys of his employer :— CHARLES PARKER, a clerk, about 25 yrs. of age, 6 feet 1 inch high, fresh or ruddy complexion, slight light moustache, square shoulders, proportionate build; dressed when he left in blue serge jacket and vest, light mixture trousers, elastic side boots, black hard billy hat, white polo collar, brown overcoat, had a large black square portmanteau. Is fond of attending race meetings. Accom- panied by a woman named EMMA WADE, 19 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, frizzed, and cut short on forehead ; wearing a black hat trimmed with bugles, beads and beaded lace, may be wearing a light ulster or black cloth jacket. Very good looking j-. nd fond of dress. Also by a man named JOHN LAP WORTH, 21 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slender build and dark complexion. It is strongly suspected that the two latter will have the money money in their possession, and endeavour to leave the country with Parker. .£ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension of the offender and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to James Duns, Head Con- stable, Detective Department, Central Police Station, LEI- CESTER.— Bow- street, May 4. Description of JOHN alias JONATHAN SCAN- DRETT, charged on a warrant with stealing, on 3rd instant, at E'jbwvale : a blue woollen Slop, nearly new ; a grey plaid Welsh flannel Shirt, made to button behind; a dark blue piloc cloth Vest, single- breasted ; a black leather clasp Purse, and a pair old elastic- side Boots :— 17 to 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 to 6 inches high, proportionate figure, fresh com- plexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers onface, and hangs his head a little when walking ; dressed in a suit of old faded pilot cloth, dirty black bowler hat, and stolen boots ; a native of Preston- Wynne, Herefordshire, and generally employed as a farm labourer. Information to Captain Parker, TREDE- GAR, of to Sergeant Kendall, EBBWVALE, who holds warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 4. Stolen on the 1st instant, from 84, Bourne Street, East- bourne, Sussex :— a pair of men's lace- up Boots, of light make, tips on heels, and brads in soles, with toecaps, slightly worn. By a man who had lodged in the house about a week, and absconded on the morning of the robbery, he is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, • rather large full grey eyes, light brown hair, no whiskers, medium figure, has a large scar on side of neck ; dressed in dark cap with peak of same material, grey coat, black vest, corduroy trousers and elastic- side boots, or he may be wearing the stolen ones, and woollen neckerchief with star in cjntre and figures of soldiers on horses playing polo, on border. Supposed to be a native of Bournemouth, has recently been discharged from the army, and has in his pisaession a number of photos of black women, brought from India. Iuformation to Mr. Superintendent Newnham, East Sussex Constabulary, EASTBOURNE.— Bow- ttreri, May 4. Wanted, charged ( with two other men in custody), with stealing from a fowlhoute at Church Farm, Build was, during the night of 19l. h instant, 11 Fowls aud 3 Ducks ( recovered): — a man about, 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium, build, reddish face, no whiskers or moustache, downcast look, weats his cap very low over his eyes; supposed dressed in dark jacket and vest, cloth trousers which are too long and turned up at bottoms, old lace- up boots, and cloth cap with knob or button on top, a labourer, aud a native of Iron- bridge, Salop. He is a poacher. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Ivins, WELLINGTON, or P. S. Lingfo- d, DAWLEY, Silop. — Bow- street, April 30. Stolen at Rye :—£ 6 or £ 1 in Gold. By a man who lodged in the house on the night of 27th instant, and left on the following morning, leaving behind him a London, Chatham, and Dover Railway illustrated Tourist Guide, 35 to 40 years of age, very short, fair complexion, light hair, whiskers, and moustache, stout figure ; he said he was going to work tor a watchmaker, supposed to be a German ; dressed in brown coat, with packets at the sides, light vest and trousers, worn at the bottoms, black hard felt hat, dark neck- tie, laee- up boots, fancy toe- capped, carried an umbrella. Iuformation to the Head Constable, RYE. — Bow- s'reet, April 30. Stolen between 2 and 7 a. m. on 22nd instant, at Chorlton Hall Farm : — a pair of woollen cord Trousers, with white bone buttons. By JOHN JONES, 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair and whiskers ( round face), no moustache, aud stout build ; a farm servant or cowman ; dressed in grey round jacket, hard felt hat, strong lace- up boots, and supposed to be wearing stolen trousers. Information to Mr. Supt. John Plant, BROXTON, Cheshire. — Hmo- s'. reet, April'AO. Stolen during the night of 27th or early on the morning of 28th instant, from a bed- room at the Q leen's Head Inn, Church Stretton, Eight Half- Sovereigns. Uy a fellow- lodger of the following description :— a tramping watch and clock cleaner and repairs old china, about 36 years of age, 5 ft. 9 or 10 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, black hair, dark moustache, little or no whiskers ou side of face ; dressed in a dark blue skirted coat, pockets on aides with il- ips, dirty black cloth trousers, much worn, dark vest, large soft felt hat, stroi. g Uce up boots, veiy wide ones, and wealing a white ' apron, carrying a black leather big, with small hanging lock attached; he gives the name of HERBERT PRICE, aud says he has been iu the army. Absconded from Andover on 24th instant, charged on warrant with embezzlement from the London and County Bank, Andover :— NELSON WILLIAM HOBBS, Bank Clerk, 20 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, little whiskers, small light moustache, light hair, hazel eyes, and fresh complexion ; dressed in dark overcoat with velvet collar, hard felt hat, brown striped trousers, and low boots with blue cloth tops. FRAUDS AISTD AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of EDWIN EDGE, butcher, of No. 73, Penkhall- street, Newcastle, Staffordshire, remanded to H. M. Prison, Shrewsbury, until 4th instant, charged with fraud :— he is about 38 years of age, 5 feet a iuches high, brown hair, small light moustache and imperial, grey eyes, and oval visage. He has been in the habit of attending fairs in Salop and adjoining counties ; after purchasing cattle, & c., from the auctioneers, he pays a Bmall portion of the purchase money in cash and filla up a cheque for the remainder ou the Branch of tlie Manchester Liverpool District Banking Com- pany,. at Newcastle, Staffordshire, Limited, and ou their1 being presented it is discovered that there is no assets. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Ho wells, County Constabulary Office, WHITCHURCH, Salop.— Bow- street, May 4. Obtained by means of false pretences, at Dawley, Salop on 23rd ultimo :— a pair of men's new strong nailed Boots ( recovered). Also on 24th ultimo, a new pilot cloth Coat, navy- blue colour, serge lining, a poclcet with flap on each out- side, a large inside pocket in lining on left side ; a pair new drab- coloured moleskin trousers, fall fronts, bone buttons; a new sirgle- breasted white moleskin Vest, five small bone buttons. By a man, 55 to 60 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high; dressed in the above clothes, or an old black cloth coat, light cotton cord trousers, patched ou knees, and old strong boots. He is n native of Dawley, Salop, but has been away over 30 years, and working as labourer in ironworks at Manchester, Warriugtoo, nnd Wigan, and is believed to be the same person advertised in Police Gazette of 27th ultimo, as wanted for a similar offeuce at Warrington. He is a good scholar, and writes letters purporting to be sent by persons of position in the neighbourhood. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Ivins, WELLINGTON ; or P. S. Langford, DAWLEY, Salop.— Bow- street, May 4. Wanted on a warrant for Deserting his Wife and Family at Farnham, on 2nd ultimo :— WEORGE WEST, carpenter, 56 years of age, over 6 feet high, dark complexion, stoops, round shouldered, and has bullet under one arm, which can be felt. Supposed to be in London ; has lodged at 46 and 48, Ripperton- road, Monster- road, and 7, Rectory- road, Ful- ham ; he has workea at Horsham, Sussex. Information by wire to Mr. Supt. Pike, FARNHAM, Surrey.— Bens- street, May 4. Absconded, charged with fraudulent bankruptcy: — ULYSSE MELACHRINO, a Greek, 37 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers and moustache, long thin nose ; dress dark clothes. Warrant issued. Infor- mation to the Director of Criminal Investigations, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, S. W.— Metropolitan Poice, May 2. A female child, about nine months old, was found on the 12th instant, in a field near the highway at Northfleet. Description : fair complexion, healthy appearance, light flaxen hair and blue eyes, vaccination marks on arm ; dressed in a white cotton chemise, blue and white flannel petticoat with red stays, pink flannel frock, white knitted shawl ( very old and much worn), white bib ( quite new), waterproof pilch, blue worsted socks, and patent leather boots with kid tops. Information to Mr. Supt. E. Coppinger, Police Court, CHATHAM ; or to Sergeant W. Waterman, Police Station, NORTHFLEET.— Bow- street, April 30. Description of JOHN PRICE, alias WRIGHT and PICKING, wanted at Warrington for obtaining a pair of man's forge Boots ( recovered), by representing that he had been sent by a forge manager to purchase them on his account, on 17th instant:— about 55 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, light whiskers on sides of face, and light complexion ; dressed when here in old black cloth frock coat, light coloured trousers far worn, and ditto muffler. He has been convicted at Warrington and Wigan for similar offences, having recently undergone sentences of 9 months hard labour from e:< ch place. Information to S. Hunt, Chief Constable, WARRINGTON.— Bow- street, Ap'il 27. Description of a man who called at a house in Stoke- on- Trent, on 24th instant, offering drapery goods for srle, and whilst there, he assaulted and attempted to commit a rape on a girl 14 years of age :— he is about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark beard, whiskers, and moustache, turning grey ; dresstd in light trousers, light overcoat, and hard black hat. Remanded, at Wells, Somerset, until 7th inet., charged with larceny :— CATHERINE RILEY, wife of Owen Riley, a travelling tinker, she is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 4I ins. high, medium build, very dark complexion, bark brown hair, blue eyes, and is slightly pockmarked, and has several cuts and scars on the face, especially over and under the left eye and bridge of nose ; dressed in a dark grey waterproof ( in place of a dress), old plaid shawl, arid black bonnet; she has a female child with her, about nine months old. Remanded at Falsgrove, until 10th instant, charged with breaking into a barn at Coart Heads, Brompton, during the night of 30th ultimo : — THOMAS BRADLEY, 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, black hair, cut short, Drown eyes, fresh complexion, a labourer, native of North Stockton ; dressed in stolen coat, black cloth vest, cord trousers, brown cloth cap with peak, strong lace boots. CHARLES HOYLAND, 26 years of age, 5 feet 4\ inches high, dark brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, a labourer, native of Leeds ; dressed in blue duck jacket, dark cloth vest, moleskin trousers, brown cloth cap, and lace boots. JAMES LEE, 32 years of age, 5 feet 6I inches high, light brown hair, brown eyes, fresh complexion, a labourer, native of Liverpool, tattooed on both arms and breast with figures ; dressed in black cloth coat, brown silk vest, cord trousers, sealskin cap, and stolen boots. THOMAS RILEY, 32 yeaTS of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, black hair mixed with grey, brown eyes, fresh complexion ; dressed in brown cloth coat, grey cloth vest, white duck jacket, moleskin trousers, brown cloth cap and clogs, labourer, and a native of Waterford, Ireland. Information to Mr. Superintendent Spence, North Riding Constabulary, PICKER- ING, or to Inspector Dove, County Police Office, FALSGRAVE, Scarborough.— Bow- street, May 4. Committed for trial at the next West Sussex Quarter Sessions, to be held at Horsham, for horsestealing, on - st instant, at Ifield :— CHARLES WILLIAMS, 40 yearsof age, 5 feet inches high, brown hair and eyes, sallow complexion, light brown whiskers and moustache, abscess marks on right arm ; dressed in dirty cord jacket, vest and trousers, hard felt hat, and very old boots ; states he is a labourer, belonging to Brix- worth, Northamptonshire.
