Nottce.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Sl^ llRtiire of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. %• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that tui information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no oharge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editoi, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. . Advertisements offering rewards must state olearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without khe apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, snch Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Whereas, Thomas Earlam was found murdered in his house at Smallwood, Chester, on 9th instant, supposed by a men known as PATRICK CAREY, alias JOHN WIILTE. who has tramped under the came of JACK or JOHN :— he is about 35 or 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, < t mned complexion, no whiskers or moustache, stout build, slightly pock pitted ; dressed in a hard brown felt hat, long blue pilot cloth overcoat, corduroy trousers, patched on right knee with light cord, also at the bottom. The following pro- perty has been stolen from the house :— a suit of men's clothes, of blue- black worsted cloth, slightly ribbed, nearly new, and a Post Office Savings Bank Book, belonging to a lodger named Edward Sampey, wrapped up in a Paisley handkerchief. Further information respecting the murder at Smallwood on 9th instant :— the woman Mary Moran, ( advertised in Police Gazette of 12th instant), died on I6th instant from the injuries received. A reward of £ 100 will l> e paid by Her Majesty's Government, to any person other than a person belonging to a police force in the United Kingdom, who shall give such information arjd evidence as shall lead to the dis- covery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Infor- mation to the Chief Constable's Office, County Police Office, CHESTER, or to any Police Station.— Bow- street, Feb. 19. Whereas the dead body of a newly- born female Child was found in a privy at Belle Yue Gardens, Gorton, on 2nd inst., and at a Coroner's Inquest, held on 5th instant, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned ' against some or persons unknown.' This is to g; ye notice that a reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom, who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the Grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any Accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the Murder, who shall give such, evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to the Chief Constable of Lancashire, PRESTON, or to Mr. Supt. Bent, County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, near Manchester, or at any Police Station of the COUNTY OF LANCASTER.— Bow- street, Februray 19. On 9th instant, a Human Head was found in Apley Pool, near Wellington, Salop :— the Head, which apparently had been severed from the body by a sharp instrument, was enclosed in a bag, supposed to have been made from a portion of a woman's dress, two pieces of brown paper being next to the remains, and tied with Btring, the whole bundle having been afterwards tied round with a piece of blue window- cord; the Heal is very small, the teeth in the upper jaw are prominent, and somewhat irregular, a tooth on the right side in front of the eye- tooth recedes into the mouth, and is shorter than the others, dark brown hair, nose short and broad, ears very small, the features are well marked, and in good state of preservation, and any one who had known them during life, would have 110 difficulty in recognising them. Neither age nor sex can be positively stated. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Ivins, County Constabulary Office, WELLINGTON, Salop.— Bow- street, February 14. FORGERY. Absconded on 10th ultimo, charged with forgery : — GEORGE H. SIMPSON, alias WESTON, a clerk, 40 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark brown hair, fair moustache ( heavy), blue eyes, bald back of neck, supposed through blistering', hair long to cover same, one front tooth deficient in upper jaw, splay footed ; dressed ia dark brown overcoat, black hard felt hat. ring on little finger right hand ; may be found at Shorncliffe or Bedford Barracks, pensioned 11th April, 1882, from 1st Battalion 16th Foot, at latter place ; mother resides at 33, Mount- street, Devonport. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investiga- tions, Great Scotland Yard, S. W. — Metropolitan Police, February 19. SLOBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person in the Beverley Horse Fair, on 21st instant:— a brown leather Pocket- case with elastic baud, containing seven £ 5 East Biding Bank Note*, and a Deposit Receipt for £ 80 from the Driffield Branch of the East Riding Bank. Information to G. H. Knight, Head Constable, Borough Police Office, BEVERLEY— Bow- street, February 23. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 2 and 3 p. m. on 20th instant, the dwelling- house of Spencer Tester, on Duddleswell Forest, Busted, Sussex, was broken into and the following property stolen therein :— a large sized silver Geneva Watch, f- plate ; an open face silver verge Watch, chips broken oif; a large silver Geneva Watch," plated Chain attached; a grey flatly Overcoat, black velvet collar; also £ 14 in Gold and 10s. in Silver. Supposed by a man, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 ot> 8 inches high, fresh complexion, proportionate figure ; dressed in a brown overcoat, hard felt hat, new white shirt, collar deep points, short tan leather leggings ; was carrying an umbrella, and respectable appearance. Information to Mr. Supt, Peerless, UCKFIELD, Sussex, or at any Police Station in EAST SUSSEX,— Bow- street, February 23. Wanted on warrant for warehouse- breasing, at Longtou, on 12th instant :— JOSEPH f. S WETENHAM, 43 years of age, 5 feet 8| inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, whiskers, beard and moustache, blue eyes, medium build, a carter or labourer, ' D ' on left side and cut mark back of left hand, a widower and native of Longton ; generally wears a soft billy- cock hat ; he is a returned convict, has been in penal servitude several times, and was last discharged from Borstal Convict Prison on 1st February, 1876. Also SAMUEL GRATTIDGE, shoemaker, 32 yens of ace, 5 feet 8f inches high, pale complexion, brown hair, small light moustache and beard, about a fortnight's growth, blue eyes, slender build, anchor on right forearm, ' J. S.', anclror and bracelet left forearm, end off first left toe, scar right of neck and right groin, and mole on left breast; dressed in cord trousers, and lace- up boots, heavily nailed,— native of Longton, is a returned convict, discharged from Dartmoor Convict Prison 22nd July, 1877, after 5 years for warehouse- breaking. Information to Mr. Supt, McWilliams, Police Office, LONGTON, who will send photo, & c., on application.— Bow- street, Feb. 16. Stolen by means of housebreaking, during the night of 11th instant, at Oswestry:— a black corded cloth Jacket, braided round, two pockets on hips, and one inside left breast; a dark cloth Vest, lined with swan's down ; a striped flannel Shirt, with a piece let in behind ; a pair of man's elastic- side Boots, nearly new ; a leather Purse ; about £ 4 or £ 5 in Money; and a silver Watch, open face, No. 4953, Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, DORKIKG,— Bor- s'reet, Febrwy 11. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING . Description of two Ponies, supposed stolen, taken from three men on 19th inBtant, near Watton, Herts :— a dark chestnut mare Pony, aged, no shoes. 12 hands 3 inches high, shoit tail, rough coat; and a dun- coloured mare Pony, rising 3 years, one shoe on off foot, slight scar on near eye, light grey nose, short tail, and rough coat. The men who escaped had the appearance of low horse copers, and were dressed in tight cord trousers, dark coats, and hard felt hats. Ou° is about 30 years of age, 6 feet 8 or 9 inches high ; the second, about 5 ft. 7 inches high ; and] the third about 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high. They are all strongly built men and left behind them a dark brown mare, 14i hands high, aged, long hair on legs, a set of old plated silver harness, worn and heavy ; a horse- slaughterer's cart, painted black, red lined, red wheels, liued black, board on off- side with name destroyed, and the words ' Dealer, Tottenham,' painted upon it. The name is believed to be J. Kefford. Information to Mr. Supt. Hyde Clarke, Constabulary Office, WARE, Herts.— Bow- street, February 23. R> manc1ed at Atherstone, until 20th inst .— CHARLES NICOLL, charged with stealing a Horse, on 6th instant, recovered at Derby, he states he is a confectioner, and native of Edinburgh, but has spent most of his life at and near Burton- on- Trent and Derby ; he has tho appearauce of a groom or stable helper ; 32 years of age, 5 feet 1£ inch high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, face very slightly pockmarked aud spotted with erysipelas marks, large scar below cap of right knti., i '" id left thigh broken, blister mark back of left leg, and flesh wart below left shoulder; dressed in a dark grey tweed suit, tight- fitting trousers, brown hard felt hat; Is supposed to ba tho man wanted for horsestealing in the couaties of Somerset, Devon, and Stafford, as described in Police Gazettes of 3rd November and 1st December, 1882, and 31st ultimo. Information to Mr. Supt. R. Hannah, Police Office, ATHERSTONE, Warwickshire.— Bow- stmet, February 16. Stolen from a field at Bloxwich, near Walsall, on or about 8th instant:— a dark brown Horse, strong nag Colt, 4 years old, 15 hands high, docked tail, without shoes. In- formation to Chief Constable Cater, WALSALL, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, February 14. Description of SPACEMAN, alias HENRY LAMBERT, wanted at Reading for obtaining a Pony by false pretences on 23rd December lait :— he is from 30 to 35 years of age, full face, 5 feet 6 inches high, rather stout built; dressed in pepper and salt coloured dust coat, is a horse coper and frequents fairs, & « ., is well known at Bristol, Gloucester, Worcester, Abingdon, and other places. Information to Chief Supt. , fas. Purchase, Borough Police Station, READING, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Feb. 14. Stolen from a field at Harlow, Essex, about 7 p. m. on the evening of the 6th instant :— a dapple grey nag Mare, aged, 15 hands high, silvery mane » nd tail, in foal, and good condition. Iuformation to Mr. Supt. John Lennon, Consta- bulary Office, EPPING, Eisex.— Bow- street, I'eb. 14. Stolen during the night of 17th instant, from a stable at Stoke Bruerne, Northamptonshire ;— a black Horse, about 15 hands high, aged, has a small spavin on near hock, in fair working condition, hair chaftd off both hind quarters by the boat harness. Supposed by a lad, 15 or 16 years of age, wearing light coloured clothing. Information to Mr. Supt. D. Norman, Police Office, TOWCESTER, or at any Police Station in the County.— Bow- street, February 14. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen at the Pleck, Walsall :— a light cloth Jacket, out- side pockets ; a pair of lace- up Boots, nearly new ; a checked Shirt; a blue and white silk Muffler ; a white Muffler ; and hard black round Hat. By a lodger, a boatman, 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout, fresh complexion, light and long hair, stoops when waiving, dirty appearance, and a native of Alcester, Warwickshire. Information to Chief Constable Cater, WAI^ ALL.— Box street, February 23. Wanted on warrant for stealing on 11th instant, a pair of lady's Drawers, and a Chemise, both marked ' Brown ' ; and a black leather Purse, containing 9s. 6d. :— ADELAIDE PAYNE, 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh com- plexion, light blue eyes, light brown hail-, medium figure, and is wearing the stolen under- clothing : dressed in black velvet dress, black stamped silk dolman, blick feather trimming 6 inches deep, sage green Gainsboro' hat, feathers to match, black kid gloves; traced to London; takes lodgings, aud induces the persons to board her, by stating her father is a farmer in Cambridgeshire. Information to R. W. Romanis, Head Constable, Town Hall, MARGATE.— Bou,- street-, Feb. 23. Stolen from Walsall Wood on 20th inst. :— 4^. 6d. in Silver Money ; a small white s'lk Pocket- handkerchief, and 2 linen ditto. By a woman who lodged in the house one night, 18 yeara of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, bliick hair, cut across the front, and medum build ; dreaded in white straw hat, trimmed with black velvet, black cloth jacket, grey dress with deep flounce round bottom, and black band, white necktie, and strong lace- up boots. February 23 Charged with stealing, on 13th instant, at Ti'ehurst: two white flannel Horse Cloths, with straps; and a Flour Sack, marked ' James Dewe, Burghfield Mill' :— GEORGE WILLIAM FERGUSON, 32 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, dark complexion, short black curly hair, small dark moustache, no whiskers; dressed in dark brown coat, cord trousers, hard felt hat, white scarf tied in sailor's knot, and old side- spring boots; hawks watercresses, and sometimes gathers rags aud bones; has been a jockey. Information to Mr. Sapt. Pocook, County Police Station, BEADING, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Feb. 21. Stolen at Ty Nant, Festiniog, on 19th instant :— a pair of black leather Leggings, nearly new, with buckles and straps each side, one of the staps broken at the eyehole. Supposed by a tramping tailor, about 40 or 45 years of age, 5 feet high, complexion very dark, dark hair, slightly grey, shaved close, except a large moustache; dressed in long dark overcoat, hard felt hat, strODg boots. " Wanted for absconding from his bail, a True Bill having been found against him, by the Grand Jury, at the October Sessions, 1880, for embezzling several sums of Money, the property of the Manchester and Melford Railway Company, while he was station master, at Llanybyther, Carmarthen- shire :— DAVID EDWARD PRICE, a native of Rhayader, Radnorshire, 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh com- plexion, full face, blue eyes, high forehead, two front teeth in upper jaw projecting a little, light brown hair, whiskers, and small light moustache, scar on back of one of his hands, ( supposed left), is a little bow legged, and walks with a long step, stout but well built; was employed 12 months ago on the G. W. Railway, aa porter, at Kimble Junction, near Cirencester, since on the West Lancashire R tilway, and lived with his wife and family at Inglewhite, but left on 22nd Jau. last; is well known in Manchester, where he has two brothers- in- law, named JSamer, one a litter, the other au engineer. Information to Chief Constable's Office, LLANDILO, Carmarthenshire.— Bow- street, February 21. Absconded from Cirencester, on 15th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing from a tl welling- house, £ 30 in Gold : — EDWIN WITTS, of Cirencester, labourer, and formerly tea dealer, 33 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark com- plexion, dark hair, dark thick moustache, whiskers shaved off, beard very dark, has a cold or i^ flamation in the left eye; dressed in an old grey overcoat, with dark velvet collar, with old dark grey cloth jacket and trousers, much worn, nearly a new pair of strong boots, and black bowler hat, which he may have changed since he left on 15th instant. Information to Mr. Supt. Wood, Cirencester.— Bow- street, February 19. Stolen from the Cliff, Stourbridge, between 11 p. m. 13th, and 9 a. m. 14th inst. :— JJLO in Gold. By a man who lodged at the house on the night of the 13th instant, and leftat 9 a. m. on the 14th instant, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, long thin features, black curly hair, bald on top of head, has a thick nose which is flit at the end ; dressed in a long blue overcoat, dark cloth vest, and hard billy hat; statea he was employed by the Great Western Railway Company, to repair telegraph and signal wires. Information to Mr. Supt. John Wheeler. Police Office, STOUR- BRIDGE, Worcestershire.— Eow- street, February 19. Stolen at Gorton, between 8 a. m. and 10 30 a. m. 2nd instant:— a woollen Shawl, recovered. It was pledged by a girl, 16 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, freah complexion, and. light sandy hair; dressed in an old brown dress, black cloth jacket, trimmed round the bottom with black fur, elastic- side ooots, and black straw hat ; she is a factory operative. In- formation to County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, Man- chester.— Bow- street., February 19. Description of WILLIAM RACKLEV, late of Cowley, Middlesex, wanted for Fowl stealing at Iver, Bucks, on 3rd instant:— he is 35 years of age, about 5 feet 10 or 11 inshes high, full face," large features, and clean shaved; dressed in a velveteen jacket, cord or fustian trousers, hairy cap, and lace- up boots ; turns his toes out very much when walking, and of dirty appearance. Absconded from Worcester :— a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, thin face, dark brown moustache, and beard on chin ; dressed in brown coat with two buttons on back and pockets on hips, black bowler hat, and old elastic side boots with odd toecaps ; charged with stealing a Vest ( recovered), a gold horse- shoe Pin with a stirrup in the centre, a gold Nugget Pin with three stones, the fourth lost; and an imitation gold curb Chain, the bar lost, and a Spade Guinea. He stated that he is a saddler, and called at shops, asking for work. Information to the Head Constable, City Police Office, WORCESTER,— Bow- street, Feb. 16. Stole A from the Queen's Head beer- house ia Ely, on 7tli instant :— a pair of plain fronted Oxonian Shoes, without nails, half worn out, with black worsted lic » s. By a man who had lodged there the previous night, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, a good figure, pockmarked face, no whiskers, slight dark moustache ; dressed in dark cloth coat, light coarse trousers, hard black billycock, hawks combs, and collects skins in a bag. Supposed to belong to Cambridge. Information to T. Smith, D. C. C., ELY, Cam!)".— Ew- street, February 16. Charged on warrant with stealing three tin Boxes, containing Clothing, at New Clee, on 13th inst. :— JOSEPH TWIDALE, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, very stout, bloated appearance, dark hair and mous- tache, and small whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, and hard black round billycock hat; accompanied by a woman, 34 yrs. of age, lost two teeth from front, and her little boy, 2 years old. They left Grimsby, ou 13th instant, stayed at Hull all night, left by first train on 14th instant, for Leeds. The woman has her marriage lines with her, her maiden name was Eleanor Or a;/. Information to Mr. Supt. Geo. Jarvis, County Police Station, GREAT GRIMSBY, Lincolnshire. - Bow- street. February 16. Stolen from Wellington on 14th instant:— a dark buff cloth Ofercoat, jellow bone buttons, pockets on hips, aud one ou left breast, lined with stuff to correspond, lining of sleeves is black aud yellow, ' Venables & Co.,' oa suspension loop on collar. Supposed by a woman 35 or 40 years of age, 4 feet 0 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, round face, slight build; dressed in black hat and rough long dog skin jacket, torn around the back and patched on the back with rough cloth, supposed gone to Newport. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Ivins, WELLIXGT > N, $ a. lop. —£ 9W- street, February 16. Absconded from Penrith, Cumberland, on 31st ultimo, charged with larceny, aud for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued:— ALBERT ALLISON, hairdresser's apprentice, will probably try to go to sea, a native of Cocker- mouth, Cumberland, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, broad hips, stout figure, awkward gait when walking, dark complexion, dark eyes, brown hair, full face, and has a few dark hairs on upper lip ; dressed in dark cloth jacket, yellow tweed trousers, and low bard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Fowler, PENRITH, who holds the warrant for his apprehension, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, CARLISLE.— Bow- slreet, February 14. Description of WALTER WILLIAMS, a grocer's assistant, wanted at Sheffield, on warrant, charged with embezzlement:— he is about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, dark brown hair, sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache, cut Bhort, slim build ; dressed iu a brown mixture coat and vest, black trousers, and short blue pilot overcoat, and low felt hat ; up to 10th instant, he has been travelling for a cigar merchaut, he has worked at a public- house in Hertford, as an ostler, and has also been employed as a grocer's assistant, in London, Hull, and Liver- pool. Information to Mr. J. Jackson, Chief Constable, SHEFFIELD, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- slreet, February 14.
