Notice.— It ii requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to tho POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, " W. O. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should he appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should he made and sworn to before a Magistrate, the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should he forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. • A^ yertisernants offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without khe apprehension of the offender. It Is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are noi addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London," PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 9th instant, a Human Head was found in Apley Pool, near Wellington, Salop :— the Head, which apparently had been severed from the body by a sharp iustrument, was enclosed in a bag, supposed to have been made from a portion of a woman's dress, two pieces of brown paper being next to the remains, and tied with string, the whole bundle having been afterwards tied round with a piece of blue window- cord; the Head is very small, the teeth in the upper jaw are prominent, and somewhat irregular, a tooth on the right side in front of the eye- tooth recedes into the mouth, and is shorter than the others, dark brown hair, nose short ar. d broad, ears very small, the features are well marked, and iu good state of preservation, and any one who had known them during life, would have 110 difficulty in recognising them. Neither age nor sex can be positively stated. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Ivins, County Constabulary Office, WELLINGTON, Salop.— Boy- street, February 14. On the afternoon of 9th instant, Thomas Earlam, a lodging- house keeper, at Smallwood, was found murdered in hisliouse ; also Mary Moran, who lived with the above, was found in the house very much ill- treated, and io still uncon- scious. Supposed by a man who had been lodging in the house about seven days, and goes about the country begging ; goes by the name of JOHN, about 37 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark or tanued complexion, black hair, no whiskers or moustache, stout build, slightly pock pitted ou cheekbones ; dressed in a brown low- crowned haid felt hat, a long blue pilot top coat with large pockets, corduroy trousers, patched on [ right knee a_ d at the bottom with lighter mate- rial, anil lace- up boots. There was stolen from the house at the time a man's suit of black ribbed worsted cloth clothes, nearly new, and a Post Office Saviigs Bank Book, Sandbacb, No. 215, in the name of ' Edward Sampey,' was in the pocket. The above man was seen leaving the neighbourhood at about 12.40 p. m. with a bundie under his arm, tied up in a parti- coloured muffler ; he had also two tins, one containing sugar, the other tea, which he took away with him. Information to the Chief Constable's Office, CHESTER; Supt. Hindley, Miu- DLEWICU, Cheshire ; or any Police Station.— Bow- street, Feb. 12. On 7th instant the dead body of a woman named Mary Coaden was found floating in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Burnley, and had evidently been in the water 8 or 9 days. There was a large wound over left temple, penetrating the skull, and a smaller wound above and behind left ear. An inquest was held upon the body, and the Jury returned a verdict of ' Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown.' Information to Mr. Supt. Wright, County Police Office, BPKNLET, Lancashire.— Bow- stre't, February 12, ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Wanted on a charge of pocket picking, along with two other men, now in custody, ( remanded to 13th instant) :— a man, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark sallow complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers, and moustache; dressed in black cloth coat, pepper and salt coloured trousers and vest, black billycock hat. Information to County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, Manchester.— Bow- street February 12 BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Wanted on warrant for warehouse- breafdng, at Longton, on 12th instant:— JOSEPH fSWETENHAM, 43 years of age, 5 feet 8f inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, whiskers, beard and moustache, blue eyes, medium build, a carter or labourer, 1 D ' on left side and cut mark back of left hand, a widower and native of Longton ; generally wears a soft billy- cock hat ; he is a returned convict, has been in penal servitude several times, and was last discharged from Borstal Convict Prison ou lst February, 1876. Also SAMUEL GRATTIDGE, shoemaker, 32 yeirs of age, 5 feet 8f inches high, pale complexion, brown hair, small light moustache and beard, about a fortnight's growth, blue eyes, slender build, anchor on right forearm, ' J. S.', anchor and bracelet left forearm, end off first left toe, scar right of neck ard right groin, and mole on left breast ; dressed iu cord trousers, and lace- up boots, heavily nailed,— native of Longton, is a returned convict, discharged from Dartmoor Convict Prison 22nd July, 1877, after5 years for warehouse- breaking. Stolen by means of housebreaking, during the night of 11th infetant, at Oswestry:— a black corded cloth Jacket, braided round, two pockets on hips, and one inside left breast; a dark cloth Vest, lined with swan's down ; a striped flannel Shirt, with a piece let in behind ; a pair of man's elastic- side Boots, nearly new ; a leather Purse ; about £ i or £ 5 in Money ; aud a silver Watch, open- face, No. 4953, Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Gough, OSWESTRY, Salop. — Bow- street, February 14. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Coldharbour, on 12th instant:— a pair of new dark cord Trousers, aud a pair of military side- spring Boots. Infortion to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, DORKING.— Bo'c- s'. reet, February 14. Between 11 p. m. and 6 a. m. on 9th inst.. the ' Garibaldi' beer- house, Chalvey, Bucks, was broken into and stolen therein : — 150 common penny Cigars ; two men's old striped Shirts ; a pair of man's iace- up Boots, No. 6 size, nearly new; a Scaif ; a man's tweed Coat; a man's tweed Vest ( darker than coat) ; a pair of man's black leather Leggings ; a pair of woman's knitted Stockings ; a pair of woman's button Boots, much worn ; and a woman's dark waterproof Cloak. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Dunham, Police Station, SLOUGH.— Bow- street, February 12. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 7 and 8 p. m. 7th instant, from Manor House, Esher : — three Rings, one diamond, one plain gold, and one signet, crest— a dog tied down ; a suit of Clothes, Oxford mixture ; a diagonal cloth Coat; a pair of brown Trousers; and £ 9 in Gold. Informa- tion to Mr. Sunt. Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, CIIERTSEY. Bow- street, February 12. Stolen by means of housebreaking, in Hinckley, between 6 aud 8 p. m. on 4th instant:— a silver Geneva Watch ; a gold plated Brooch, with red cornelian stone; a gold plated keeper Ring, with led stone; a gold plated keeper Ring, with green and white stoces ; and two common keeper Rings. A jemmy, 14 inches long, and J inch wide, and a piece of wax candle, wrapped in a piece of the Birmingham Daily Mail, for 23rd, 1882, were left behind. Information to Mr. Supt. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Bemancled at Atherstone, until 20th inst:— CHARLES NICOLL, charged with stealing ag Horse, on 6th instant, recovered at Derby, he states he is a confectioner, and native of Edinburgh, but has spent most of his life at and near Burton- on- Trent aud Derby ; he has the appearance of a groom or stable helper ; 32 years of age, 5 feet 1J inch high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, face very slightly pockmarked and spotted with erysipelas marks, large scar below cap of right knee, has had left thigh broken, blister mark back of left leg, and flesh wart below left shoulder; dressed in a dark grey tweed suit, tight- fitting trousers, brown hard felt hat; is supposed to be the mau wauted for horsestealing in the counties of Somerset, Devon, and Stafford, as described in Police Gazettes of 3rd November aud lst December, 1882, aud 31st ultimo. Information to Mr. Supt. R. Hannah, Police Office, ATHERSTONE, Warwickshire.- Bora- street, Februa- y 16. Stolen from a field at Bloxwich, near Walsall, on or about 8th instant:— a dark brown HorBe, strong nag Colt, 4 years old, 15 hands high, docked tail, without shoes. In- formation to Chief Constable Cater, WALSALL, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, February 14. Description of SPACEMAN, alias HENRY LAMBERT, wanted at Reading for obtaining a Pony by false pretences on 23rd December last:— he is from 30 to 35 years of age, full face, 5 feet 6 inches high, rather stout built ; dressed in pepper and salt coloured dust coat, is a horse coper and frequents fairs, & e., is well known at Bristol, Gloucester, Worcester, Abingdon, and other places. Information to Chief Supt. Jas. Purchase, Borough Police Station, READING, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Feb. 14. Stolen from a field at Harlow, Essex, about 7 p. m. on the evening of the 6th instant :— a dapple grey nag Mare, aged, 15 hands birth, silvery mane and tail, in foal, and good condition. Information to Mr. Supt. John Lennon, Consta- bulary Office, EPFING, Essex.— Bow- street, Feb. 14. 4 Stolen during the night of 17th instant, from a stable at Stoke Bruerne, Northamptonshire :— a black Horse, about 15 hands high, aged, has a small spavin on near hock, in fair working condition, bair chaftd off both hind quarters by the boat harness. Supposed by a lad, 15 or 16 years of age, wearing light coloured clothing. Information to Mr. 8upt. D. Norman, Police Office, TOWCESTER, or at any Police Station in the County.— Bow- street, February 14. The brown horse Pony, found in the possession o CHARLES NICOLL, at Derby, on 7th instant, and adver- tised in Police Gazette of Uth instant, has been owned, it having been stolen from Atherstone, Warwickshire.— Bcno- street, February 14. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Absconded from Worcester :— a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, thin face, dark brown moustache, and beard on chin ; dressed iu brown coat with two buttons 011 back and pockets on lups, black bowler hat, and old elastic side boots with odd toecans; charged w ith stealing a Vest ( recovered), a gold horse- shoe Pin with a stirrup in the centre, a gold Nugget Pin with three stones, the fourth lost; and an imitation gold curb Chain, the bar lost, and a Spade Guinea. He stated that he is a saddler, and called at shops, asking for work. Information to the Head Constable, City Police Office, WORCESTER.— Bow- street, Feb. 16. Stole. i from the Queen's Head beer- house in Ely, on 7th instant :— a pair of plain fronted Oxonian Shoes, without nails, half worn out, with black worsted laces. By a man who had lodged there the previous night, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, a good figure, pockmarked face, no whiskers, slight dark moustache ; dressed in dark cloth coat, light coarse trousers, hard black billycock, hawks combs, and collects skins in a bag. Supposed to belong to Cambridge. Information to T. Smith, D. C. C., ELY, Cambs.— Bow- street, February 16. FANNY SHARRATT, advertised in Police Gazette of 17th ultimo, has been apprehended at Manchester.— Bvw- street, February 16. GEORGE FILBY, advertised in Police Gazette of 5th[ ult.' charged with laiceny, at Crumplesham, Norfolk, has been apprehended, is under remand until 19th instant.— Bcno- street, February 16. Charged on warrant with stealing three tin Boxes, containing Clothing, at New Clee, on 13th inst. :— JOSEPH TWIDALE, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, very stout, bloated appearance, dark hair and mous- tache, and small whiskers ; dressed 111 dark clothes, and bard black round billycock hat; accompanied by a woman, 34 yrs. of age, lost two teeth from front, and her little boy, 2 years old. They left Grimsby, on 13th instant, stayed at Hull all night, left by first train on 14th instant, for Leeds. The woman has her marriage lines with her, her maiden name was Eleanor Gray. Information to Mr. Supt. Geo. Jarvis, County Poliee Station, GREAT GRIMSBY, Lincolnshire. - Bow- street, February 16. Stolen from Wellington on 14th instant:— a dark buff cloth Overcoat, yellow bone buttons, pockets on hips, aud one on left breast, lined with stuff to correspond, lining of sleeves is black and yellow, ' Venables & Co.,' on suspension loop on collar. Supposed by a woman 35 or 40 years of age, 4 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, round face, slight build; dressed in black hat and rough long dog skiu jacket, torn around the back aud patched on the back with rough cloth, supposed gone to Newport. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Ivins, WELLINGTON, Salop.— Bow- street, February 16. Absconded from Penrith, Cumberland, on 31st ultimo, charged with larceny, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued:— ALBERT ALLISON, hairdresser's apprentice, will probably try to go to sea, a native of Cocker- uiouth, Cumberland, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, broad hips, stout figure, awkward gait when walking, dark complexion, dark eyes, brown hair, full face, and has a few dark hairs on upper lip ; dressed in dark cloth jacket, yellow tweed trousers, and low bard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Fowler, PENRITH, who holds the warrant for his apprehension, or at the Couuty Chief Constable's Office, CARLISLE.-— Bow- sireet, February 14. Description of WALTER WILLIAMS, a grocer's assistant, wanted at Sheffield, on warrant, charged with embezzlement:— he is about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, dark brown hair, sandy beard, whiskers, aud moustache, cut short, slim build ; dressed in a brown mixture coat and vest, black trousers, aud short blue pilot overcoat, and low felt hat; up to 10th instant, he has been travelling for a cigar merchant, he has worked at a public- house in Hertford, aa an ostler, aud has also been 9 POLICE GAZETTE February 16 employed as a grocer's assistant, iu London, Hull, and Liver- pool. Abscosded on 30th ultimo, from Wold charged rv- ith stealing a silver English patent lever Watch, maker Ross, the glass has a small crack near the edge, steel curb Chain with an old Ivey attached ; a silver demi hunting Watch, No. 25088, blue figures on outside of case, thick double steel Chain with email Coin and Key attached, ' One Dim ' on one side of coin ; a silver Geneve, medium size; a silver Geneva Lever, No. 41170, maker Vogt, Northampton, steel Chain, split King, two Keys, and German silver Guard attached ; an old- fa. shi. oned silver verge Watch, m » ker Gibson, London, cases very thin, dial chipped, small split King attached ; an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, No. 13302 or 13002, maker Williams, London.— WILLIAM WATSON, alias CLOCKEY BILLY, travelling watch avid clock cleaner, 40 to 45 years of age, both little fiogera contracted, about 5 feet high, walks forward with quick shuffling gait, has a very short neck, pale complexion, brown hair, light brown heavy moustache, and whiskers; dressed in shabby dark brown coat, moth- eaten under left arm, dark brown vest, and light brown trousers, patched on both knees with darker material, about a foot in length, with a light stripe down side, br- wn cloth cap, aud lace- up boots; speaks with Yorkshire accei t, talked very much about Carlisle ; he Baid he came lrom York, and at other times Scarborough. Information to Mr. Supt. Williamson, County Constabulary, NORTHAMPTON, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- slreit, February 14. Wanted at Kendal, on a charge of embezzlement ROWLAND EWAN, late coal agent to the Kendal Equitable Industrial Co operative Society, who absconded on 28th Oat., 1882. About 45 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches higb, fresh complexion, heavy bushy whiskers, dark brown hair, propor- tionate build, has lost some teeth on right side of upper jaw, which are rather conspicuous, sticks his shoulders up and hangs his head to one side when walking, rather simple looking, shuffling walker; dressed in black cloth shooting coat and vest, dark grey tweed trousers, and soft billycock hat. He is a native of ilutton, Westmorland ; has relatives at Crook, and Gilpin Bridge. Has been in the employ of the Furness Railway Company; was foreman porter at Grange and station- master on tbe Furness Railway ; is well known at Ulverston, Barrow- in- Furness, Workington, Whitehaven, and other pirts of Cumberland. He is supposed to be residing at Manchester. See Police Gazette of 3rd November, 1882. In- formation to Thomas Cotton, Chief Constable, KENDAL, Westmorland, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, February 14. Stolen in Chester on 7th instant:— a cat's- eye Breast Pin, tet with 4 diamonds, has a flaw at bottom of eye ; a gold owl's head Breast Pin, with diamond eyes. By HUGH HARDY, who had been valet to the owner, 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, delicate looking, sallow com- plexion, appears consumptive, wears heavy brown moustache and small side whiskers, walks peculiarly, owing to heel of left foot being sore ; dressed in a suit of black, billycock hat, Oxford shoes, with check cloth tops, and a piece cut out of heel to ease foot, and wears a silver ring on left hand. Was waiter at some hotel in Shrewsbury lately, and in the Infirmary there and also at Maeclealield, having broken a blood- vessel, and last year was waiter during the season at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Grasmei- e. Information to the Chief Constable, CHESTER,— Bow- street, February 14. Charged with stealing . it London Road, St. A] bail's, about 1 p. m. on 9th instant:— a pair of long gold fringe earrings, marked on back 18 carat, and set with 5 or 6 small turquoises; a lady's gold plain Ring, set with 6 pearls and a diamond in the centre ; a lady's gold mourning Ring, with ' Regard' it gold letters ; a lady's gold wedding Ring, and a lady's plated silver Ring. A man about 28 years of age, 5 ft. 4 or 5 inches high, dark complexion and moustache, no whiskers, round features ; dressed iu a fawn- coloured over- coat, dark trousers, and black felt hat. Information to- Mr. Superintendent Pike, Police Office, ST. ALEAN'S.— JBow- street, February 12. Description of JOHN ANDREWS, charged on a war- rant with having stolen a great Coat and Cape, in Wrexham, Denbighshire, on 18th ultimo :— he is 31 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, a • urner, but now a groom. Supposed to be employed with a brother in Westminster. He recently left 23rd regiment. Information to W. Wilde, D. C. C., WREXHAM, Denbigh- shire.— Bow- street, February 12. shaved ; dressed in black i: elt hat, and brown <& eck suit ; is of respectable appearance and good address. Has been a brewer's traveller. Information to Chief Constable Gosser, PORTSMOUTH, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 9. Charged on warrant with larceny as ' bailee :— DANIEL EDWARDS, < 30 years < f age, 5 feet < 3 inches higb, thin features, fresh complexion, grey hair and whiskers, shaved under chin, no moustache, grey eyes, stoops a little when walking, and slightly deaf ; dressed in dark jacket, straight back, dark vest, pepper- and- salt coloured trousers, light coloured soft tweed hat, carries a basket with cord attached, and generally a long walking stick ; states he is a gardener, and has been employed at Exeter Hall, Shropshire; calls cn clergymen and gardeners for relief, represents he has been engaged by some one in the neighbourhood, but from the weather aud some other cause he has been unable to com mence work ; stops at common lodging- houses. Information to Mr. Supt. Jeffrey, BROMSGROVE, or to Sergeant Harrison, DROITWICH, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 9. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Wanted, charged with obtaining by false pretence?, on 12th instant, a man's dark blue nap Overcoat, valvet collar, cloth buttons ; a grey woollen Shawl, small black and grey mingled stripes; sind a pair of woman's elastic- side Boots, all nearly new :— a woman, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches higb, sandy hair, fresh complexion, and slender build; dressed in black velvet hat, old brown shawl, and black dress ; she solicits alms by singing in the public streets, accompanied by four children, the eldest a girl about 12 years old, the youngest she carries in her arms. Information to Frederick Button, ead Constable, NEWCASTLE- UNDER- LYME - Bow- street, February 16. Description of NEVILLE ROBINSON, of Peterborough, labourer, charged on a warrant with obtaining by false pretences a suit of men's Clothes, at Peterborough, on 5th instant. The suit is a brown mixture slop made sort of tweed. He tried to pledge the suit at Huntingdon on Gth instant. He is 19 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, thin figure, fresh complexion, brown hair, no whiskers or mous- tache ; dressed in brown tweed coat and vest, dark brown cotton cord trousers, and round hard felt hat. Sometimes does groom's work. Has been in a reformatory. J s fond of low company. Information to James Hurst, Head Constable, PETERBOROUGH.— Bow- street, February 12. Wanted at Birmingham, charged with obtaining Silver to a large amount by false pretences:— CHAS. J. PERKS, about 32 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark brown hair, slight whiskers and moustache, dark complexion, promi- nent nose, crooked a little, speaks loudly, upright bearing but swinging gait and stylish appearance ; dressed in dark brown Newmarket coat and high silk hat; a jeweller, and will pro- bably seek employment at his trade. Information to the Chief Constable, BIRMINGHAM,— Bow- street, February 9. Description of a tramping labourer, wanted for obtaining Goods by false pretences on 23rd and 24th ultimo: — about 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout build, fresh Complexion, light brown hair, and slight light brown whiskers on upper part of cheeks, supposed grey eyes ; dressed in soft billycock hat with part torn off the brim, dirty white slop, moleskin trousers with patch of corduroy on ODe knee, and lace- up boots.
