Stolen from the person at Moss Side, about 2.45 p. m. 26th instant:—£ 8 14s. 9d. in Gold and Silver. By a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather steiut, light grey eyes, dark whiskers, no moustache, dark hair, and heavy dark eyebrows; dressed in dark pilot jacket, with a hole in one elbow, large blk. bone buttons, lined with blue cloth lining, black and white plaid muffler, dirty grey shirt, black felt hat. He was very dirty looking, and had the appear- ance of a tramp. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, December 29. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen from a stationer's shop at Stalybridge, between 10.30 p. m. 3rd, and 6 30 a. m. 4th instant:— a large- sized regulation field Glass, maker ' J. IT. Steward'; a silver Locket, containing photograph of s. lady, and thick silver chain attached ; about 3 dozen pencil Cases, gold and silver- plated, and mounted, one is shape of a pistol ( silver) ; 9 alu- minium gold Penholders; a quantity of gold Toothpicks; aboutj 15s. worth of Penny Stamps. Robbery effected by forcing a trap- door near tbe roof of a four- storey building. Information to Mr. William Chadwick, Chief Constable, Borough Police Office, STALEYBRIDGE — Bow- street, January 5 Stolen from a dwelling- house in Providence Ilowj Sheffield Road, Conisbro', between 11 a. m. and 3 p. m. ou 2nd instant, by breaking oner the back door, during the absence of the family :— a lady's silver lever Watch, silver dial, sold figures, uo seconds hand, No. 438, maker's name ' Wn>, Williams, Liverpool,' probably has, ' J. S. | 1178 | Z' inaido back of case, near the right hand edge ; 2 gold Guards, one shorter than the other, small link pattern, and a brown leather clasp Purse, containing 10a. in Silver and Copper. Supposed by a tramp, of whom the following description can only be given, and who was frequently at the bask of llie house at about 12 noon on 2nd instant, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, slight dark moustache ; dressed in a dark suit of clothes, with low hard felt hat. Absconded from Debenliam, Suffolk, charged with house- breaking and stealing therefrom;— a pair of black cloth Trousers ; a dark cloth Coat; a silk Necktie ; three tobacco Pipes ; and a Walking- stick ( trousers and one pipe recovered): — HENRY SPALL, 23 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, pale complexion ; dressed in old cloth coat and vest, cord trousers, old leather leggings, old hard hat, and laced boots, and slightly bow legged, brick and tile maker by trade, may seek employment at some brickyard. About 7 30 p. m. on 29th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Miss Cooks, of Lapal, near Halesowen, was broken into by forcing a bed- room window, and stolen therein :— a pair of gold- framed Spectacles, with blue tinged glasses; a large gold Brooch, pillar cap pattern, set with amber- coloured stone ; and a set of lady's gold Studs, set with green stones. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Wanted on warrant at Stamford for stealing on 20th ultimo, a glazier's Diamond ( recovered) : —- HERBERT BROWN, alias HAWKINS, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate build, oval face, fair complexion, dark brown hair, incipient whiskers and moustache ; dressed in double- breasttd black coat, hard black felt hat, white collar turned down all round and light coloured tie, walks quick and upright. Information to Mr. Supt. Ward, Police Station, STAMFORD.— Bow- street, January 5. Wanted under a warrant at King's Lynn, for stealing, on 27th ultimo, a Coat ( recovered) :— JAMES PRESTON. 32 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, light hair, small fair moustache, no whiskers, few straggling hairs on chin, stout build, slightly deaf ; a labourer, and native of Beetley, Norfolk ; dressed in ragged rusty pilot jacket, brown knitted cardigan j icket under, blue guernsey under that, light cloth trousers, old elastic- side boots, black felt har. He is a dan- gerous character, has been five times convicted for larce:\ y in the county of Norfolk, and recently released after 18 mouths for burglary; passes sometimes as a fisherman, and is believed to be tramping through Lincolnshire to Yorkshire. Wanted on a warrant, charged with larceny, at Crimple- sham, on 30th ultimo : — GEORGE FILBY, a returned co- vict, 34 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh com- plexion, brown hair, bald, light whiskers and moustache, inclined to sandy, grey eyes, small scar on right knee; dressed in long blue overcoat, and low hard hat. Will most likely seek employment as a stonemason, but is a shoemaker by trade. Information to Mr. Supt. Sewter, DOWNHAM MARKET, Norfolk.— Bow- street, January 5. Absconded from Brantingham, charged with stealing 2 Brace of Pheasants, 11 Hares, and 6 Kabbits :— JONA- THAN THOMHAM, a labourer, about 26 } ears of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, rather stout, sallow complexion, light brown hair, small light coloured whiskers and mous- stache ; dressed in a dark cloth suit, low stiff hat, when he left, but he may have changed his clothes. He is very likely to make for some sea- port to emigrate for America. I hold a warrant for his apprehension. Information to Mr. Supt. George Ellerker, Police Station, WELTON, BROUOH, E, R. Stolen from a dwelling- house at S took pert, between 26th ultimo and 30th ultimo :— a small ov « J Brooch, size of a small egg, has ithe words ' Forget- me- not' round edge in black enamel, gold edge, has a place in centre for hair; 2 gent's gold shirt Studs, fiat fronts, and engraved thereon. By a tramping tailor, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 ins. high, slender build, swarthy complexion, heavy dark moustache, and small imperial, dark cunning eyes, dark hair, oval face, had a mark under one of his j iws, and had a keeper ring on one hand ( far worn): dressed in dark suit of clothes, brown hard felt hat, low : hoes with plaid cloth tops, and dark muffler on. Stated he came from Glasgow a few weeks ago, but was born on the borders of Fiance, spoke with a broken English accent, and will, no doubt, Beek employment in some neighbouring town. Description of JOHN PHILLIPS, a commercial traveller, j wanted at Sheffield ou warrant, charged with em- bezzlement :— he is about 45 years of age, about 5 feet 5 or G inches high, black hair, turning grey, black bushy whiskers and moustache, also turning grey, fl it face, small nose, is of slender build, and is a very bad walker. He has a wife and three children residing at Newport, Monmouthshire, and he was last seen at Newcastle- upon- Tyne, on 23rd ultimo, when ho stated he was going further northwards. Description of two men wanted for forcing open a drawer in a bed- room, at the Swan Hotel, Tunbridge Wells, and stealing therefrom, on 30th ultimo :— a £ 5 Bank of England Note, 2 Sovereigns ( one with a ring to hang on a chain), a Shilling and 2 Sixpences with holes in them ; a ruby Ribg ; a Turquoise ; a pair of plain gold Ear- rings ; a tortoiseshell Brooch, inlaid with gold ; one Ear- ring to match ; a gold plated Locket ; a jet Ear- ring ; a Trinket with blood- stone ; a sil ver Brooch; 2 gold Brooches, one snake pattern, the other plain with emerald in centre ; and one Ear riug to match :— lst, about 25 years of age, 5 feet lOins. high, dark brown hair, small whiskers and moustache, liair cut short, round features, gentlemanly appearance ; dressed in dark clothes, button boots, one of whicli was two buttons deficient. 2nd, a, bout 24 years of age, 5 feet 8 inchcs high, dark hair, sallow complexion, no whiskers ; dressed in dark brown coat, thiek material, dark mixture trousers, lace boots, and felt hat. They lodged at the hotel three days, and left behind them a nearly new black patent leather folding bag, 24 inches long and 14 inches deep, with two black straps ancl plated " tudsand fastenings, containing an old clothes brush, a silver pin, a black japanned umbrella case, and a duplicate for a coat, pawned with Edwin Brown, 4, Ryder's Court, Leicester Square, on 22nd November last, by John Wallett, of 15, James Street, for 3s. Absconded, charged with conspiracy and felony :— HORATIO NELSON LAY, alias HERBERT SAY, WARREN, & c., a butler, 33 years of age, 5 feet 1U inches high, fair complexion and light beard ( now believed to be shaved off), is of smart appearance ; dressed respectably ; is a deserter from Royal Horse Guards ( blue), advertised in Police Gazette of 3rd July, 1878; likely to be found in billiard rooms and possibly in tome situation as butler. Absconded, charged with obtaining money by fraudu- lently representing that he is an agent for Messrs. Cassell, Petter and Galpin, publishers, and instructed to collect money for the completion of certain books supplied to their customers in monthly parts :— JAMES PEARCE, alias DAVIS, 28 yra of age, 5 teet 0 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, clean shaved, fore finger of left hand stiff, scar on muscle of left arm ; dressed in dark blue serge snir, hard felt hat. Description of JOHN BOLDNER, who travels the country selling a kind of pickle which he terms ketchup, and carries in glassbottles in an open basket, and for whose apprehension a warrant is issued, charged with obtaining by fraud 310 herring* from William Taney at I'akenham, Nor- folk, on 21st ultimo ;— 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion and hair, clean face, very sharp nose ; dressed in dark coat, atd knitted vest bound with black braid, mixed trousers, lace boots, hard chummy hat, and wears a silk nekerchief.
