HKotSce.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposod effendors, or stolon property, may bear the SSgnatore of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be mado and addressed to tho Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. %• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that tn information should be mado and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, tegether with the advertisement, forwarded to tho Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all JLetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise tho insertion will not be mado. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees aud Deserters from the Militia, should bo forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, shove, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by t'no persona forwarding them. They should contain no exprsssions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of tho property, without ihe apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may he at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Stolen from the person at Wolstanton, on 28th ultimo :— a green rusaia. leather Purse, nearly new, containing 2?. 3d. in Money, a visiting Card (' Miss Jane ICirkwood Cowan' upon ii), a white ivory Tablet, a halfpenny Postage Stamp, and a bill from Briggs and Sons, drapers, Newcastle- under- Lyme, the figures ' 5/ 11' written upon it. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, September 1. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Absconded from Doynton, charged on warrant with housebreaking, on the night of 23rd ultimo:— JAMES STEVENS alias THOMPSON, alias ' GIPSY JIM,' alias HARRY HAYES, 33 or 34 years of age, 5 feet 5 or G inches high, stout build, dark complexion, slight black moustache, and beard about a fortnight's growth ; dressed in black cut- away coat, with pockets behind, light trousers and vest, white muffler, black bowler hat, and elastic- side boots. Will most likely seek employment in the harvest fields. Information to Mr. Supt. Matthews, Fishponds, Gloucestershire, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, Septtmber 1. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen during the night of 28th ultimo, from a field at Yarlingtou : — a black cob Mare, 2i years old, about 14 hands high, white star on forehead, small white streak in face, white points behind, tail cut square, and has been broken to saddle; also a bay horse Pony, 4J years old, 12i hands high, hog mane beginning to fall over, slight eruption in mane and tail, and hair rubbed off. Some gipsies, who have been convicted of horse stealing in Somerset, and who were at Yarlington Fair with swinging boats on 28th ultimo, are suspected. Information to Mr. Supt. Williams, Wincanton, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, September 1. Stolen during the night of 23rd ultimo, from a field at Bowes Park, near Southgate :— a bay Mare, aged, 1C hands high, black mane and tail, long foretop, hair chafed off near shoulder; and a bay Geldiog, 15 hands high, black mane and tail, blaze down face, one white foot, and a little shot over on both front joints. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metro- polian Police, September 1. The youth described in Police Gazetee of 25th ultimo, as having stolen a Pony at Great Lever, is not now wanted the Prgebeen withdrawn, Mr. Supt. Holland, County Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, September 1. , Stolen from a field at Bletchicgley, on 30th ultimo :— a aark brown Horse, aged, 16 bands high, thin mane, switch tail, white spot on near side of wither, has been fired on near fore foot, and has been a buuter, but for several years worked upon a farm. By two men, one 40 to 45 years of ngJ, 5 feet 5 or ( J inches high, dark hair and complexion, little or no whiskers; dressed in black overcoat, trousers fitting tight to tho leg*, and hard felt bat. The other 30 to 35 jeais of » « '•>, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, little or no whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes and hard felt hat. Had with them a four wheeled chaise with basket body, drawn by a horse in low condition. They were seen going in the direction of Croydon with the stolen horse in their possession. Supposed stolen from OH Romney Marsh, Kent, on the night of 26th instaut: — five Kent tag Sheep, viz. :— four wethers, and one ewe, marked ' C. 7.' in pitch on off sida aud crop, and upper farthing near ear, and under farthing off ear. Stolen about C. 30 a. m. 24th iustant:— a brown mare Donkey, part of tail cutoff: a two- wheeled box Cait, paiuied dark blue, red wheels, picked out with blue, ' J. Phillips, Mortlake,' chalked on body; a pony Harness, brasa mountings, the property of J. Phillips, staying at the East Hill Passage, Hastings. By a man about 50 •"• earsof age, 5 feet G ius. high, dark hair, sandy whiskers, beanl and moustache ; dressed in old dark coat, black cloth trousers, aud black hard felt hat. Stolen between 18th and 20th instant, from a field at Bagley, near Ellesmere :— a Shropshire Down ICwe, with the letter ' P.' pitch- marked on the right side. Information to Mr. Supt. Stolen from a field at Cockett, near Forestfach, during the night of 22nd instant:— a light bay cart Mare, aged, about 15J hands high, black mane, switch tail, a few white haiis in it, star on forehead, hind feet white to fetlock, small white streak near hoof of one front foot. Stolen between 6 p. m. 22nd and 9 a m. 23rd ins1., from a field at West Dulwich :— a bay Mare, 15 hands 2 inches high, 10 years old, white star on forehead, in fair condition. Stolen from a field at Old Trafford, between 2 p. m., aud 5 p. m., 23rd instant:— A chesnut Horse, about G years old, brown mane and thin brown tail, rather weak on forelegs. By three men, one at present iu custody ; the second man is a baker, about 38 or 40 years of age, 5 feet G inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair aud whiskers, shaved on chin ; dressed in a grey tweed suit, and black billycock hat. No description can be given of the third man. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— B& w- street, Aug. 28. Description of OLIVER SELWYN, alias RICHARD JONES, a native of Ashelworth, near Gloucester, remanded till lat prox'ino, ou a charge of horsestealing :— he is 18 years of age, 5 feet inch high, dark complexion, dark brown hair and eyes, spare build, several poikmarks on forehead, and cut on left forefinger ; dressed in brown overtoil, black jacket and vest, grey trousers, and drab soft hat; has been previ- ously convicted of Horse- stealing at Gloucester ; has been residing at Nottingham and travelling to and from Birming- ham. He is supposed to have disposed of stolen horses at Birmingham or Wolverhampton. Information to Deputy Chief Constable George Checketts, County Police Office, Worcester.— Bow- street, Avgust 28. Description of JOHN GOODE alias JOHN MOORE, charged with stealing a Mare, Sa Idle and Bridle ( recovered), from Aslifield, Diltou Priors, < n 22nd instant:— he is 17 yrs. of age, about 5 feet high, round features, swarthy complexion, stout build; dressed in white slop, cord trousers, soft Jim Crow hat, with narrow brim turned down, old lace- up boots much teo large tor him, may be wearing over his slop an old brown cloth jacket, mixed with white spots, a hole worn on left side. His mother and stepfather reside at Little Witley, near Stourport, Worcestershire. Information to Mr. Supt. Galliers, County Police Office, Bridgnorth, who holds a war- rant for his arrest.— Bow- street, August 28. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Absconded from Dolgelley, on 24lh ultimo, charged upon a warrant with larceny :— DAVID ROBERTS, of Unicorn- lane, Dolgelley, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, brown hair, fresh complexion, stout build, and downcast look ; dressed when last seen in a grey cloth monkey jacket and vest, corduroy trousers, black cloth cap with leather peak, and lace up boots. Haa been to sea, aud is likely to seek employment at shipping offices or at farm houses. Informa- tion to luspector Owen Jones, Constabulary Office, Dolgelly who holds the warrant.— Bow- slreet, September 1, '' Absconded from Newport, on 29th ultimo, charged on warrant with stealing from Richard Turner a silver Watch ( recovered) : — JOHN BELLING HAM, 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 0 inohes high, round face, small dark eyes, no whiskers or moustache, dark brown hair cut short ; dressed in a suit of grey cloth and hard black felt hat: and WILLIAM THOMPSON, 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, no whiskers, slight moustache, oval face, high cheek bones, at- d brown hair, cut s> liort ; dressed in a brown cloth j- icket and trousers, and hard black felt hat. These men have been labourers for fitters in gas works, ana • will seek employment in iron works. Bellingham haa brother- in- law, named William Lawley, at Bucknail, near Hanley, Staffordshire, ar. d works at a boiler shop in Hauley. Information to Mr. Chief Snpt. Ivins, Wellington, or to Sergeant Waterson, Newpoit, Salop, who holds the warrant. — Bow- street, September 1. Stolen from a stable at Church Farm, Buildwas, during night of 25th instant :— a pilot cloth Jacket, pockets on hips, red lining, check patch on lining on shoulders inside, and hard worn ; a drab Slop ; and a pair of man's strong l& se- up Bjots, brass eyelet holes, tongue of one ( supposed right) lost. 15y a, tramping Irishman, who was harvesting at the farm thme weeks, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, long features, lifiht hair turning grey, no whiskers or mous- tache ; dressed in an old dark jacket and vest, old coid trousers, patches on knees, old hard greasy hat without band, and clogs, two rows of brass eyelets up fronts, brass nails round sides, thickly nailed under bottoms between the irona ; stated be had been serving bricklayers, supposed a native of Wolverhampton. Information to Mr. Chief Snpt. Ivius, Wellington, or to P. S. Langford, Dawley, Salop.— Bow- sireel, August 30. Description of THOMAS RUDFIELD, a tramping shoemaker ( name supposed fictitious), charged on a warrant with stealing a pair of Trousers and Vest from hi* lodgings at Duraley, ou 26th instant ( recovered, pawued at « fc> loueester the same day) :— he is about 53 years of age, 5 f3iit* 3 inches high, giey hair, clean shaved, with moustache ; dressed ill blue jacket, dark vest and trousers, black hard bowler hat, and black necktie. Will probably apply to shoemakers for employment or relief. Information to Mr. Supt. Ford, Police Officer, Dursley, Gloucestershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 30. Charged with embezzlement, and for whose apprehen- sion a warrant is issued :— WILLIAM JOHN DUNSXAN, 25 years of 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow coraplexiol', dalle hair and whiskers, small moustache, blind in right eye, has a peculiar shake of head when speaking,; by trade a basket maker, aud it ia thought he took train to Bristol on 23rd inst., carried with a large carpet bag, containing clothing. It ia probable he may apply for employment at blind institutions or basket makers. Information to J. Lynn, Head Constable, Devonport.— Bow- streit, August 30. Stolen on 19th instant, between 3 aid 9 p. m, from Liverpool Lodge, Worthing :— a silk Umbrella, natural stick handle ; and a square- mouth leather Hand Bag. By a man, about 27 years or age, 5 ftet 7 inches high, daik hair ant- i eyes, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed iu blue strge suit of clothing, dark tweed overcoat, felt hat, and old boots worn down at heels. He was at Portsmouth on 2lst instant, had dinner, & « ., and left without paying for it. Information to Mr. Supt. Silvester, Police Station, Worthing.— Biw- street, August 30. Description of JOSEPH WALSH, agent to Murdoch's Fine Arts Warehouse, Nottingham, charged ou wairant with fraudulently converting to his own use several Organettes and Pictures entrusted to him to sell :— he is about 38 or 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 incbea high, medium build, sailow complexion, rather thin features, high chet- k bones, dark brown hair, grey eyes, very dark brown whiskers aud inous • tache, which may have since been shaved ; wliou last seen was dressed in grey mixture suit, nocket ou hips, and haul felt billycock liar. Supposed to be well known at Birmingham and Shrewsbury. September 1 whiskers cut in a line of the bottom of eir, moustache, chin clean shaved, walk* with a long stride, of gentlemanly manners and appearance, well educated ; supposed to be in or near London, seeking employment as a clerk ; usually dresses in dark cloth jacket, vest and trousers, black bowler hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Sheppard, Constabulary Office, Yeovil, Somerset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, August 30. Stolen from a barn in Benwick Fen, on the morning cf 28th instant :— A black tweed Coat, Vest, and Trousers, nearly new, the coat has pockets on hip?, one inside and one outside left breast; a pair of men's Boots, with elastic sides, size 9, with toecaps, and nearly new ; a white linen Shirt, with broad pleat in bosom and pearl buttons; a pair of blue worsted Stockings; and a pair of red Braces, with leather ends. The whole were tied up in a light- coloured hand- kerchief with blue border. Supposed by a tramp, about 35 or 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, clean shaved; dressed in drabbett jacket, cord trousers, brown cap, and old heavy lace- up boots. Informa- tion to Inspector King, Police Station, Chatteris, Isle of Ely, Cambs.— Bow- street, August 30. Description of JOHN MITCH EL JONES, late clerk to J. C. Pinniger, Etq, Registrar of the Newbury County Court District, who absconded from Newbury on 12th install!, charged on warrant with embezzling £ 50 :— about 24 years of age, 5 feet high, light complexion, grey eyes ( with peculiar cast), light hair, short figure, and round shouldered, single, morose in his matner, and has a peculiar voice ; was formerly in the Registrar's office at Pontyprid I, Glamorganshire, and is also known at Swansea, carries his head a little on one side when walking | and equints ; usually dressed in a light grey overcoat and 1 a d round black felt hat. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 ft. 6 ins. high, short hair, sandy whiskers and moustache, shaved chin ; dressed in black diagonal cloth overcoat, light brown trousers, hard felt hat, carries small white stick. Information to Inspector Hughes, Bangor, Carnarvonshire.— Bow- sire. t. August 28. Wanted, charged with stealing a pair of Boots ( recovered) at Rawtenstall, on 23rd instant:— A man, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, datk complexion ; wore a dark green plaid cap, which liooks dowr at front, and clogs. Stolen from a window on the roadside at Riwtenstall, about 5 p. m., on 25tb instant :— A pilot cloth Coat, with two pockets in the laps, and ticket pocket, and one large pocket inside right lap, dark bone buttons, puce and black plaid lining, part worn ; old coat was left behind. Information to Mr. Snpt. Henderson, County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— How- street, August 28. Charged with stealing 5 Sovereigns and 13 Half- ditto, at Tongefold, near Bolton, supposed about 3 p. m , 5s5th inst. : — a man, about 30 or 35 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, light complexion, and no whiskers; dressed in a single- breasted dark pilot cloth jacket, black bone buttons, cord trousers and vest, lace- up boots, hard black billycock hat, and dirty check cotton shirt. He came to the house at 10 a m. and [ obtained longings, saying that he was working on the railway at Darcy Lever on the night shift. He stated that his parents lived at Glossop. Information to Mr. Supt. Hol- land, Bolton.— Bow- street, August 28. Description of JOHN DAY, a tramping painter and paperhanger, wanted u:.( ler a warrant, charged with stealing a glazier's Diamond ( recovered) he is about 40 yeais of age, 5 feet 9 ins. high, fair complexion, light brown whisker?, slight moustache, and rather round shouldered ; dressed in a brown faded coat, and trousers of a similar material, which is all spotted with paint, an old black billycock hat, and old shoes; has a shabby appearance, and is supposed to be a native of Bristol. Information to Mr. Supt. Day, Constabu- lary Office, Cheltenham.— Sofa- street, August 28. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. HUGO CROSS MAN, advertised in Police Gazette of 28th ultimo, charged with fraudulently obtaining a gold Watch at Sheffield, on l~ th ultimo, has been apprehended at Cheltenham. Information to Chief Constable, Sheffield.— Bow- street, September 1. Absconded from Portsmouth, charged with having ob- tained £ 1 from a jeweller by meausof a fictitious cheque :— ERNEST H. BAYLY, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, florid complexion, sunburnt, high round shoulders, medium build; dressed in hard brown felt hat, white and brown check Scotch tweed ( or steel grey) suit, and shoes ; had scarf ring made of a George and Dragon shilling ( gilded), and sur- mounted by a crystal. He repiesents himself to be an Indian Officer, stays at first claes hotels, is very affable, and visits Jewellers' shop., where, after selecti * ostensibly an a present ror some relative, he tenders a fictitious cheque, receiving the balance in cash, then absconds, leaving his hotel bill unpaid. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Central Police StatioD, Portsmouth, who holds a warrant for his arrest. — Bow- street, Sftember 1. Absconded, charged with canspiring to defraud, and soliciting to commit a misdemeanour: — ARTHUR SMELLING, 32 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, Ballow complexion, dark hair and eyes, slight dirk side whiskers, near sighted, always wears eye glasses, feet rather long and flit; dressed usually in dark clothes ( now in mourning), walks erect with head back, and a money lender. RA- NOFF, 22, Shirlock- road, Gospel Oak, N., a clerk, 24 years of age, look* older, 5 feet 10 inches high, sallow complexion, hollow cheeks, dark hair and moustache ( slight); a native of Russia ; dressed in dark brown tweed suit, dark mixture overcoat, and wears a gold albert, curb pattern. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 26, Old Jewry, London, EC.— Bow- street, Avgust 30. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of the body of a woman found in the War- wick Canal, Hay Mill?, near Birmingham, on 2Dth ultimo :— about 20 to 25 vrs. of age, 5 feet long, and dark hair : dressed in lilac cotton dress, black under skirt, white cotton stockings, and two odd elastic- side boots.
