The Karnes of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not hnov^ their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their App/' eJlension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has leen stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. _ No. 6715 FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 1882. Notice.— It i « requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the Bame, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Fames and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rev ardi must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It ft particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary, INFORMATIONS, MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 25th ultimo, about 10 p. m., John Manley was murdered near the ' Kail way Hotel,' York- street, Leeds, and a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' has been returned by a coroner's jury, against JOHN ROSS, alias CUNNINGHAM, alias LOFTHOUSE, whose portrait, taken 7 years ago, can be forwarded :— he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark brown hair, brown eyes, fresh complexion, pro- minent forehead, dark eyebrows, sunken eyes, slight mous- tache, mole on left shoulder, and squints ; a sijjgle man, and a hawker, born in Leeds, and of Irish descent; dressed in a pair of dark cord trousers, bell bottoms, slightly frayed, shabby black coat and ve. 5t, Turkey red plaid scarf, dirty shirt, old shoes, rough bully cap, with knob at top. Has aunts who go by the name of Ross, residing near Chain- st., White Abbey, Bradford ; has been several times convicted of felony and other offences, and is supposed to be well known to the Police at Bradford and the West Riding generally. .£ 100 reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to Any person, other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom, who shall give such information as shall lead to the apprehension atd conviction of the Murderer, anuSir William Harcourt will advise the graut of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to auy accomplice not being the person who actually committed the Murder, who shall give such information as shall lead to a like result. Charged on warrant with the manslaughter of his wife Hannah White, at Bradley on the 30th ultimo :— WILLIAM WHITE, 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, dark whiskers all round face, may be clean shaved, dark eyes, slender build, shuffling gait, is a miner and native of Tipton ; dressed in grey clotn cap. black cloth jacket, torn and mended on left shoulder with white thread, old grey trousers and clogs. Information to Chief Superintendent Longden, Police Office, Bilston, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, January 9. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Wanted charged with burglary at Tettenhall, on night of 8th instant:— a mar, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet high, dark hair inclii-. eo to curl, dark thick moustache, pro- portionate build ; dressed in a black hard hat, or, black stf xelt hat, dark jacket, with light monkey jacket underneath, brown striped trousers, and suppjsed elastic- side boots, ] art of the stolen property. Police Station, Tettenhall, Staffordshire— Bow- st„ January 13 Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 3 and 7' 30 p. m., 1st, at North Shields;— A lady's long sealskin Jacket. trimmed around bottom and cuffs and the front with black fur, six inches deep, brown satin twilled lining; a gold Brooch and Earrings to match, set with white ivory ; a small gold Brooch and Earrings, two drops shape of grapes on broocb, earrings twisted pattern; a gold Bracelet with Brooch and Earrings to match, set with rubies and five white stones ; a gold mourniDg Ring, with white pearl stones and plait of hair all around ; a lady's gold dress Ring, with seven stones of various colours ; a small gold Necklace, old- fashioned pattern, with a small gold cross ; a small silver Brooch, quite thin, small chains attached, foreign make ; and a white ivory Fan, with black cord attached. Information to Chief Con- stable Anderson, Borough of Tynemouth.— Bow- st., Jan. 11. Stolen by means of burglary, during the night of 5th inst. at Lawshall:— a gold and green Inkstand, with small Candle- stick to match ; an openwork gold casket Inkstand, medallion painting on ivory on lid ; a gold dagger Paper Kuife, with dark blue painted enamel handle ; an open- worked gold Pen Rack; an Indian silver Snuff Box, with pebble lid ; a small gold Match Box, raised figures on lid ; a small pendulum American Clock ; an ebony and silver Inkstand, containing French Coppers ; a gold Pen Holder, shaped like a feather ; a gold embossed Paper Knife, and a black and white plaid Scotch Shawl. Information to Mr. Supt. Roberts, Clare, or to P. C. Frost, Lawshall, Suffolk.— Bou- street, January 9. Stolen in Kendal, on 3rd instant, by means of house- breaking, by boring a hole through the window frame with a fimlet and slipping the latch back:— a yellow ' eather morocco ' urse, with white metal clasp, containing £ 3 in Go'd, 8s. 6d. in Silver, and 5d. in Copper ; and three wooden Pipes, one with amber mouthpiece, another with a white metal top, and tlie other common wood pipe. Also stolen on 4th instant:— a gentleman's gold diamond finger Ring, the diamond a little damaged, and marked 18 carat gold. Stolen between 6' 40 p. m. and 8 p. m. 2nd instant, from the dwelling- house of George Br-. wn, Dudley- street, Bilston, in the absence of the family, by means of forcing the shutters: —£ 55 in Gold; £ 1 in Silver; a double- cased silver lever Watch, ' G. B.' engraved on outside of inner case, with a long silver Chain attached; a Boston lever Watch, white dial; and a lady's silver Geneva Watch. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Shustoke, between 7 a. m. and 6 p. m. on 4th instant:— a round Jacket, pepper and salt mixture, with a pocket on each hip, one pocket on left breast ( inside), back lined with dark lining, and the sleeves lined with yellow ; a grey Jacket, with pocket on each hip, one inside breast pocket left side, one large pocket inside at the bottom of coat; and a bundle Handkerchief, red and white. Stolen by means of Housebreaking, at Shrewsbury Fields Shiffnal, between 23rd ultimo, and 5tL instant:— a quantity of Gin ; Ale ; and rhubarb Wine; and a number of 3 half- pint Bottles, some light and some dark ; also 2 black silk Bodice, trimmed with black satin, one of them beaded fringe ; 2 cashmere Jackets, beaded all over; a black crape Dress and Bodice ; 2 cloth Jackets, one trimmed with black fur, the other with black satin ; a black cashmere Jacket, trimmed with gimp and lace ; a black cashmere Jacket, trimmed with crape ; a black cashmere Dress ; a brown rep Dress ; a small sealskin Purse; 6 red and white pocket Handkerchiefs; 2 black cashmere Shawls, one with fringe, the other trimmed with black silk; a large dark coloured woollen Muffler ; 2 nickle silver tea Spoons ; a silver- washed neck Chain, with Cross attached, crystals set in silver ; an ivory Paper- knife ; a loDg gold witch Chain, with Locket shape of a heart, and small Knife attached ; a gold Brooch, set with stone ; a pair of gold plated sleeve Links ; a gold plated Brooch, set with coloured stone ; and a gold plated Brooch, set with mottle coloured stone. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING The Sheep, advertised in the Police Gazette of 9th inst., as stolen from Dorchester, has been recovered.— Bow- street, January 13. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT LEVI JACKSON, advertised in the Police Gazette of 11th instant, has been apprehended, aud committed for 1 month imprisonment.— Boui- sfeet, January 13. JAMES McPHERSON DICK, wanted on a warrant at Birmingham, for larceny of a seal- skin Jacket from Joseph Kanreutlier, Merchant, 66, Parade, Birmingham. A reward of £ 20 will be paid by Joseph Kanreuther, 66, Parnde, Birmingham, to any person giving such information as thall lead to his arrest. Information to Mr. Supt. Wanted by warrant for emhfzz'irg the sum of £ 800 •— THOMAS YEATS, secretary for the Windsor Permanent Benefit Building Society, Liverpool, who absconded on 7t, h instant, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, rather thick daik hair, florid complexion, scorbutic face, rather dissipated looking, dark whiskers and moustache, pro- minent cheek bones ; dressed generally in dark clothes, tall silk hat which he wears low ou forehead. Information to the Clr'ef Supt. Detective Department, Liverpool.— Sow- street, January 13. Stolen at Shrewsbury during the night of 10th instant: — a lounge or slack backed Jacket, made of west of England brown and grey mixture clotb, single breasted, five dark mottled buffalo buttons down front, two pockets on hips, one outside left breast, and one inside right breast, pieces let in under arms, about 6 inches long to widen it, body lined with Italian cloth, and the sleeves with striped selecia, and would fit a man about 5 feet 2 inches high. By DAVID HUGHES, a tailor, native of Llanfyllin, 30 years of age, 5 feet 4£ inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, slender build, ttin face, letter 1D'" left side, and cut over right eye, has a little whiskers down side of face, and on chin ; dressed in an old blue cloth coat, old trousers, torn across each knee, and old boots, which are very much woru. He was released from Shrewsbury Gaol, on the 3lst ultimo, after serving a term of 18 c. months imprisonment, for larceny at New Town, he is said to have been tried at Oswestry for larceny, and sent to sessions for trial, and was sentenced to 7years penal servitude in 1870. Information to Chief Constable Harrop, Shrews- bury, Salop, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, January 13. Stolen on 7th inst., from Gatwick Farm, Charlwood : — a Shovel ( recovered), a single- barrel muzzle- loadiug Gun, a black cloth Overcoat, a slop Jacket, and 3 brass Ornaments for horses. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, and dark whiskers ; dressed in black pilot jacket, dark vest, fine corduroy trousers, and black felt hat. May be found working with thrashing machines. Information to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, January 13. • > Charged on a Warrant with stealing 6 Cheeses :— a man giving the name of E. J. DILLON, about 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown liair, inclined to curl, dark moustache, and bushy whiskers, shaved on chin, rather small thin nose, has a respectable appearance, and speaks with an Irish accent; usually dresses iu a brown tweed suit, and has also a black suit, sometimes wears a billy hat, and at others a tall silk one, has several rings on fingers, one with a dark stone in centre, which he wears on little finger of left hand, he has also two mackintoshes, one a light colour the other dark. He represents himself to be a Cheese, Butter, and Egg Merchant, stating that he has taken a shop in the town, gets a quantity of goods under that pretence, and gives a cheque on some t ank for payment which is returned dishonored. If found apprehend and wire, when an officer will at once be sent for him, he is accompanied by two other men. Information to Chief Constable Stevens, Nottingham. — Bow- street, January 13. Description of WM. TAYLOR, a tramping labourer, charged on warrant with stealing an Overcoat, black nap, dcuble- breasted, three pockets inside, one outside pocket ; a new pair of cotton cord Trousers, tiy fronts ; a silk Necker- chief with white spots in it :— he is about 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light complexion and hair, sandy whiskers, chin shaved, moustache, about 3 week's growth and rather stiff build ; dressed in a grey Scotch tweed suit, hard felt hat, blue necktie with a flower and brass clasp upon it, low shoes, and was carrying a bundle, his old clothes and no doubt the stolen ones, in a guana bag. He left Readby at 6 a. m. on 10th instant, stating he was going to Hull; states he has a brother at Doncaster, talks a deal about Gainsbro'; supposed to belong to Barnsley, & nd to have a father there', who is a carter.| Information to Inspector Taylor, Epworth Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, January 13. Wanted under Warrant for stealing {£ 28 :— a Man, 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, daik curly hair, dark whiskers and moustache, bare place in beard from scar, weak eyes. Has been mauager at a boot shop in Man- chester, and may endeavour to obtain similar emplovment, or leave the country, he absconded on 28th ultimo. 2 Guineas reward will be paid by his late employer for information which will lead to his apprehension. Information to the Detective Office, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- it., Jan. 13. Description of WILLIAM BURRIDGE, late Sergeant in the West Surrey Regiment, Staughton Barracks, Guildford, wauted on a warrant for Embezzling £ 50 :- about 29 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light hair and moustache, whiskers shaved off; lias left a wife and two children behind. Wanted for obtaining a silver lever Watch, under false pretences, ( Watch recovered), at Middlewich, on 4th instant: — SUSAN JOHNSTON, alias FORNEY", about 25 or, 30 years of age, medium >' uild and height, black hair, dark brown eyes, pale face; dreseed iu a black hat, supposed straw, trimmed with cardinal, black velvet bodice, black silk skirt and sash, flowers on outer edge of sash, and white apron. Supposed in company with a man named Johnson, who ' goes from town to town canvasiDgfor the Liverpool Victoria Legal Friendly Society, and hawks or sells musical albums, he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, long beard and whiskers turning grey ; dressed in a snuff coloured suit, black hard billycock hat, and represents the above woman as his wife. Vgv, stout build, grey eyes, light brown hair, no whiskers, and slight light moustache which may be shaved off; generally dressed in light tweed suit, dark brown overcoat, and hard black bowler hat; he is a native of Charlton King's, Cheltenham, where he has left his wife and family ; he is fond of drink aad gambling, and generally carries a small stick. AT KIN*, and J. WILLIAMS, and stated that ho resided at No. 8, Trafalgar- road, Hands- worth, Birmingham, and was a builder ; he also stated to other persons that his name wssHv. Mil ehelJ, ' Oakfield Villa, Kensington, London ; he took furnished lodgings at Buxton, for 5 months, having with him his wife, two small children, and two females acting as servants. Wanted on warrant for Stealing on 4th instant, at Dart- fold, Kent:— a double- case silver lever hunter Watch, ' W. S.' scratched on inside and outside of outer case ; a silver curb Albert, with silver Seal, in shape of a tea kettle, and a silver Penny Piece attached :— WILLIAM DERRICK, a railway porter, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in light grey mixture suit, dark grey overcoat, and black hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Webster, Kent Constabulary, Dartford.— Bow- s: reei, January 9. Description of GEORGE WOLFSON, charged as a bailee with stealing four large illustrated brown Bibles, and a large English History, value £ 11 10s., on 21st ultimo:— about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, very fair com- plexion, long pointed nose, with a small, bridge ; dressed in a small check suit, grey overcoat, hard felt hat, and plaid shirt, appears near sighted ; he is a book canvasser, and ' is in tTie habit of canvassing at night with a bull's- eye lamp ; he will most likely be found at the same occupation ; he formerly worked for Mr. Scott, of Birmingham, and Mr. Hughes, of Harpenden, Herts, both of whom he defrauded ; he is accom- panied by a woman of medium height, pale and slender, brown hair; dressed in black straw hat, trimmed with velvet and a red rose, and black cloth jacket. Information to Inspector Moore, Police Court, Newport Pagnel, Bucks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Jan. 9. Description of a man, a convicted thief, wanted for stealing the Reins, ( recovered), advertised in Police Gazette of 2nd instant:— he is about ( 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slender build, in- kneed, squints with one eye, stoops a little when walking, grey hair; dressed in a grey cloth coat, cotton cord trousers, lace- up boots, and black billycock hat; frequents stables, public- houses, beer- housea, and farm- houses in the neighbourhood of Manchester, Urmston, Stretford, Flixton, Irlams ' oth height, Pendlebury, and Swinton, as carter or ostler. Information at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, January 9. Stolen on Cth instant, between 9 and 11 a. m.:— a ribbed black cloth Coat, sleeves lined with scarlet and drab, ' Heath, Pride Hill,' on loop inside of collar ; a Vest of same material; a pair of elastic side Boots, nearly new ; a black, drab, and scarlet- coloured Necktie ; a white linen turned down Collar ; two white linen Handkerchiefs, with the name ' Edward Dodwell' on one of them ; a tortoiseshell handled Knife was in the Vest pocket. By a man 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, small featured, fresh complexion, dark hair, and a little dark brown moustache, slender build, and of rather respectable appearance; dressed in a dark stable jacket, light or brownish coloured trousers, rather dirty, a black low- crownei hat, and: a green and brown scarf, ( check), tied in a double knot. This man called at several houses in Shrews- bury, stating that he had some twist Tobacco to sell very cheap, and on coming to a house where there was no one in, he stole the above articles.
