C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should bo appre- hended, and the Name^ s given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. At no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Metiers addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and et Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Absconded from Maesteg, on 24th ultimo, charged on a warrant with forgery and fraud : WILLIAM TREHARNE, late of Danygraig House, Llwydarth- rd., Maesteg, Glamorgan, colliery proprietor, 44 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, brown eyes, very small pug nose, full round face, dark brown hair, dark brown thick and curly whiskers and moustache, whiskers all round face, short thick neck, rather short arms, stout built, walks very erect; dressed in a dark tweed overcoat, a suit of red, green, brown, and black plaid cloth, with cordecLedges, coat and vest double- breasted, and a hard bowler hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Thomas, Constabulary Office, Bridgend, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, October 25. Description of GEORGE SINCLAIR, alias SADLER, late of Cobham, Surrey, charged with forgery : about 60 yrs. of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, brown hair, turning grey, hazel eyes, small whiskers on side of face, fresh complexion, large roman nose, walks very erect, rather bow legged, and swings his arms when walking ; dressed in dark tweed or cloth suit, new pair of boots, with black eyelet- holes, has been employed as coachman and gardener; supposed to have been a farmer, near Godalming, and to have had a banking account at Messrs. Mellersh's Bank, at Godalming. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, Chertsey, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 21. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person on 23rd instant : 3 gold Watches, one, makers name T. Cox and Savouy, Corr hill, No. 7584 ; another with white dial, centre seconds, compensation balance, No. 35473 ; the other old- fashioned, with chased dial, makers name Rowell, Oxford. Information to Chief Superintendent Burton, Borough Police Office, Dudley.— Bow- street, Oct. 25. On 17th instant, a young woman, named LEAH SMITH, was assaulted and robbed of 4s. on the highway, at Hartlebury, by a man about 27 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 ins. high, rough face, and slight dark moustache ; dressed in dark or° biack clothes, very greasy, and had the appearance of an engine cleaner. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hardman, Great Witley, near Stourport, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, October 25. Stolen from the person at Newmarket Races : a gold Watch; has engraved on the case ' Presented to Richard Elgie, Esq., by a few friends,' & c. ; a silver lever Watch, open face seconds hand, the bow is loose ; a brown leather Purse, containing a £ 5 Bank of England Note, and a gun Licence for ' Bryant'; a brown leather Purse, containing a lady's diamond Ring, a garter Half- guinea, a Quarter- Guinea, with hole in centre, a 7- shilli'ng gold Piece, and Cheques for various small amounts on ' Deacons and Williams,' and the Romford Banks, in favour of W. T. Deller; a black Overcoat, lined with brown silk, and medium size. Information to Mr. Superintendent Benson, Newmarket, Cambridgeshire. — Bow- street, October 25. Stolen from the person during the fair at Fazeley, on 14th instant: an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, No. 10852. Information to Inspector McCrea, Tamworth, or to Police Constable Riley, Fazeley.— Bow- street, October 21. Stolen from the person on 17th instant : a gold hunting lever Watch, white dial, maker— Dargue, Liverpool, name of ' Thomas Armstrong' engraved on inside case ; and a gold Chain attached. Information to Mr. Superintendent Fowler, Constabulary Office, Penrith, at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, October 21. engine- turned, small piece broke out of big pointer; a short black cloth Coat; a pair of grey mixture Trousers and Vest; a pah- of elastic- side Boots; and a pair of strong lace- up Boots. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Walmsley, North Riding Constabulary, Northallerton. — Bow- street, October 25. Between 11 p. m. 21st and 6 a. m. on 22nd instant, the shop of Mr. Joseph Austin, High- street, Watford, was broken into, and stolen therein : about 500 yards of Black, various qualitity; a lady's sealskin Jacket; about a dozen silk Umbrellas, with smelling bottle handles, patterns of silk can be had, and the Umbrellas can be identified. Information to Chief Constable Robertson, Hertford, or to Inspector Chap- man, Police Station, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, October 25. During the night of 18th instant, the Booking Office at Redcar Railway Station, wa3 broken and entered, and about Six Shillings in Copper Monies and the following Tickets stolen, available from Redcar to the undermentioned stations: one first- class to Kings Cross, No. 997; one second to Kings Cross, No. 850 ; one third to Kings Cross, No. 972 ; one first to Doncaster, No. 70 ; one second to Doncaster, No. 49 ; one third to Birmingham, Mid. No. 47 ; one third to Sheffield, Mid. No. 28 ; one third to Manchester, L. and N. W.,, No. 283 ; one second to Man- chester, L. and N. W., No. 145 ; one first to Manchester, L. and N. W., 104 ; one first to Liverpool, L. and N. W., via Leeds, No. 58; one third to Liverpool, L. and N. W., via Leeds, No. 112; one first return to York, No. 171 ; one first tourist to Scarboro', No. 55 ; and one second to Brompton, No. 13. Two stonemasons' chisels, marked ' 1. W.' and • W. 1.' and left on the premises, had been stolen from Shin- clifie Railway Station, near Durham, during the previous night, where a similar robbery to the above bad been com- mitted. Supposed by a man, 22 or 23 years of age, 5 ft. 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, small light whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin, proportionate make, smart appearance, and good address ; dressed in a light grey tweed suit, white or light grey hard felt billycock hat, has a small black leather bag with him, which he sometimes ties up in a red and yellow handkerchief. Stolen, by means of burglary, on 21st instant, from the house of a lady in Worcester : a gold Eye- glass ( double); a Ditto ( single); a small dark blue enamelled Locket with pearls in centre ; a black enamelled Brooch, set in gold, and hair in centre; a Ditto, with flowers painted in centre; a white cornelian Brooch, set in gold, with flower soray in pearls and turquoises ; a small gold spray Brooch, with red flower ; two engraved gold Studs ; two mourning Studs ; a pair of' Spectacles ; two silver Vinaigrettes, one with initials ' E. Supposed by a man, 22 or 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, small light whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin, proportionate make, smait appearance, and good address ; dressed in light grey tweed suit, white or light grey hard felt billycock hat, and has a small black leather bag with him, which he sometimes ties up in a red and yellow handkerchief. Between 11 a. m. and 1 p. m., on 13th instant, the dwelling house of Ralph Haddon, at Blackham, Withyham, was entered, and a silver lever Watch stolen, makers name Biess, Lambs Conduit- street, London, number supposed 3895, with a figure representing a deer on inside of case ; also stolen a Sovereign and a Rupee. Supposed by a man who was seen near the house, and traced towards East Grinstead, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, very large nose, and dark complexion, stout built, very long feet, walks bow legged, treads on the outside of boots, and supposed to be a navvy ; dressed in light plaid coat, moleskin trousers, and brown cap with peak. Between 8 and 10 a. m. on 19th instant, the house of Sarah Ball, Burntwood, was broken into, and stolen therein : a black Shawl, with fringe round bottom ; a grey woollen Shawl; a black and white plaid Skirt; a dark Skirt with three rows of puce braid round. Two young men ( • nosed tramps) one tall and the other short, carrying a . idle, and one wearing clogs are suspected. Stolen from a field at Acklam, duri night of 21st instant : a bay horse Pony, 3 years old, Is high, black legs, in good condition, a few white hair. entre of fore- head, has a slight splint or lump inside of jreleg, a little below the knee, and has been re^ ei, tly broKe. Information to Mr. Superintendent Simpson, Constabulary Office, South Stockton, or to Inspector Silversides, Constabulary Office, North Ormesby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, October 20. Found at Kenilwortli, on 5th instant: a bay Pony, 12 hands high, aged, in good condition, long tail, and off knee enlarged. Supposed to have been stolen. Information to Mr. Superintendent Frankton, Police Station, Kenilworth, Warwickshire. - Bow- street, October 23. Supposed stolen during the night of 18th instant, from a field at the Hyde Farm, at the out parish of Leominster, the property ot Mr. T. Beaven : a dark brown cob Horse, aged, in good condition, has a saddle mark, and is a little lame in the near fore leg. Information to Mr. Superintendent Johnson, Police Station, Leominster, Heieford . hire.— Bow- street", October 23. The black Mare, advertised in the Police Gazette of 14th instant, as stolen from a field at Borras, near Wrexham Denbighshire, has been recovered in Salford, near Manchester, having been sold to a horse dealer, at Chester Fair, on 10th instant, by a man who gave the name of WILLIAM JONES, a farm labourer, about 30 or 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, black hair, sallow complexion, clean shaved, thick lower lip, and has a gipsy appearance ; dressed in a black mackin- tosh, and a seal- skin cap. Supposed to be a native of Elles- mere or Cockshut, Salop. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wilde, Wrexham, Denbighshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 21. Stolen on 16th instant, from a field in Ivy- lane, Dagenham, a Russian horse Pcny ( chestnut), 4 years old, 14 hands high, and white blaze down face.— Metropolitan Police, K Division, October 21. Stolen on 15th instant, from a field at Clifton, near Severn Stoke, Worcester : a bay cob Horse, about 14 hands high, white star and stripe on forehead, white spot on off hind leg, rising three years old, the property of James Hatfield, of Clifton, who will pay £ 2 reward on conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to Mr. Superintendent Turner, Upton- on- Severn, or P. C. Gordon, Police Station, Severn Stoke, Worcestershire.— Bow- street October 21. Stolen from a field in Wrexham, Denbighshire, during the night of 17th instant: a light grey mare Pony, aged, about 14 hands high, mottled on the hind quarters, and slightly lame on the off hind leg, the property of Mr. John Leece, Baker, Wrexham. Information to Air. Superintendent. Wilde, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, October 21. Found in a field at Coleshill, on or about 4th instant : a bay Mare, about 16 hands high, black points, collar mark on right shoulder, tv o scars on off hind leg, and one on off fore leg, she is about 8 years old, and in good condition. Stolen by means of breaking into a saddle- room, at Mr. Lambert Nicholls', Cotheridge, near Worcester, during the night of 20th instant : 3 pairs of stirrup Irons, 1 harness Bit, 1 Hanoverian Pelham Bit, 1 snaffle Bit, 1 small Bit, 1 old Pelham Bit, 2 Curbs, I Burnisher, and 2 odd Spurs, silver- LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Springbourne, Hants, on 16th instant, charged on a warrant with larceny : WILLIAM SPRATT, alias JAMES GREEN, a labourer, 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, rather stout figure, a native of Bramshaw, Hants, and walks stiff on right foot; dressed in dark coat, fustian vest, and cord trousers. Was seen in Winchester on 16th instant. Information to Mr. Superintendent Brinson, Hants Constabulary, Ringwood, or to Sergeant Alexander, Hants Constabulary, Bourne mouth, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 25. Description of GEORGE BROWN, charged on warrant with stealing a silver Geneva Watch, No. 71680, not recovered, on 17th instant: he is 37 years of age, dark complexion, broad face and forehead, black hair, mixed with grey, a tuft of black whiskers on each cheek, no moustache, hotei waiter. Information to Mr. Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, October 25. Absconded on 17th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing J70 : CHARLES E. HENLEY, a clerk, late of 31, Westley- road, Snaresbrook, Essex, and 58, Cannon- street, 6 POLICE GAZETTE. September 27 City, 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, thin build, sallow complexion, small dark moustache, long thin face, slovenly appearance ; dressed when last seen in dark reefing jacket, and Polo cap. May endeavour to emigrate. Infor- mation to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry.— Bow- street, Oct. 25. Description of EDWARD MA HONEY, clerk, charged with, stealing £ 800 from the Union Bank, Croydon : 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, thick and curly brown hair and whiskers ( full), beard and moustache inclined to sandy and long, hazel eyes, straight prominent nose, inclined to be red at the end, broad shoulders, nervous manner, thick in speech, shuffling gait, and wears glasses ; dressed in black knitted walking coat, pockets on hips, dark blue overcoat, very long, black and white check trousers, black silk scarf, deerstalker hat, and side- spring boots. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, W Division, October 23. Stolen from the dwelling- house of William Knight, at Silaby, on 11th instant: a gold Watch, No. 23668, maker Stevenson, Leicester, with the following inscription en inside case ' Presented to Mr. Wm. Knight, by the Parishioners of Sileby and a few friends, as a token of respect for his faithful services, August ( date unknown).' By ARTHUR HARRI- MAN, who had slept at Mr. Knight's the previous night, he is 26 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, cut short behind, light moustache, no whiskers, has a scar over right eye, is of square build, walks very erect, a warehouseman by trade, of gentlemanly appear- ance, and generally wears a large ring on third finger of left hand. Attends race meetings, and associates with betting characters, and is a native of Loughborough, Leicestershire. Information to Mr. Superintendent Peberdy, Loughborough, Leicestershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, October 23. Absconded from Middlesbrough, on 19th instant, charged with stealing a wash- leather Purse and nine Sovereigns, one of them an Australian one : a man, who gave the name of WILLIAM MARTIN, who stated that he was a fitter, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair com- plexion, but very pale- looking, grey sunken eyes, prominent eyebrows, and slight build; speaks with the Newcastle dialect, but states that he came from Birmingham; had on a black cloth coat and vest, rough blue woollen trousers, and hard felt hat. Carried a japanned hat box, some other clothing, and a pair of new clogs, wrapped up in a blue checked bundle handkerchief. This man represents himself to be a Good Templar, and may visit Good Templars' Lodges. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Borough Police Station, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, October 23. Description of a man charged on a warrant with larceny, on 15th instant, at Faversham, of a silver hunting Watch, ' Thos. Russell & Sons, London and Liverpool, 19051' on works : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, florid complexion, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, a tuft of brown hair under his chin, bloated face, tattooed on both arms, speaks the Eastern counties dialect; dressed in dark plaid trousers and vest, open low down, blue monkey jacket, blue cap, with crown and cross flags in front, and cheesecutter peak, blue necktie, and black and white plaid shirt; stated he was a drill instructor in the naval reserve. Information to the Head Constable, Faversham, Kent.— Bow- street, October 23. Absconded, charged on a warrant with stealing a small American 8- day Clock, with alarm : — LLEWELLYN, a tramping clock and watch cleaner, about 45 yrs. of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, thin, pale complexion, and little light sandy whiskers ; dressed in old dark coat, plaid trousers, box hat. He is fond of visiting low public- houses, and very talkative, he leaves a small card, on which is stated ' Llewellyn, Practical Clock and Watch Maker.' His wife is with him, rather tall and thin, dressed shabby genteel; also had a black retriever Dog and three Cats with them. Information to Mr. Superintendent Johnson, Police Station, Leominster, Hereford.— Bow- street, October 23. Description of CHARLES YARNA, charged on a war- rant with stealing a pair of check cloth Trousers, the property of Alfred F. Toxford, at Ely, on 6th instant: 25 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark hair and moustache, and no whiskers ; dressed in " light suit, black billycock hat, elastic- sidc boots, one of which has been recently soled ; he is a harness maker, and a native of Winslow, Bucks. Information to Acting Chief Constable Smith, Ely, Cambridgeshire.— jBow- street, October 23. Stolen from the Swan Hotel, Leek, between 2 and 3 p. m. on 16th instant, the property of Thomas Woollescroft, Rudyard, near Leek : a dark cloth Overcoat, pockets on hips, ane one insipe left breast, velvet collar, _ aud broad plaid lining, much worn, one of the pockets contained a Cheque for £ 19 10s., on Lloyd's Banking Company, Longton Branch, payable to Thos. Woolliscroft, from Henry Walters, and the payment of which has been stopped. Two men were seen in possession of the cheque, at Leek, about 6 p. m. the same date, are supposed to have gone by train to Macclesfield or Man- chester': one between 35 and 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, red nose, stout build, and supposed dressed in a light overcoat; the other about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, large red blotches on face, small brown whiskers, upper lip and chin shaved. Information to Mr. Superintendent Williams, Police Office, Leek, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, October 23. Absconded from Ely on 18tli October 1878, charged with stealing a singeing Lamp ( recovered) fromMr. Parr his master : ARTHUR YOUNGS, late of Earith, Hunts, a groom, 18 yrs. of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, browu hair, fresh complexion, round features : dressed as a groom. Information to Acting Chief Constable Smith, Ely, who holds a warrant for his arrest. — Bow- street, October 23. Stolen in transit from a travelling trunk between Waterloo Station and Paris, via Southampton, per London and South Western route : a long gold Chain, fine pattern, Indian make; a gold Locket, pearls, blue enamel with portrait of a gentleman ; a pair of Lava Bracelets, carved like cameo heads ; a mosaic Brooch, small, groundwork red ; and gold Ear- rings, set with coral. A man named SAMUEL GUMB is in custody at Southampton, and a quantity of property recovered, the above is still missing. Information at the Police Office, Waterloo Station.— Bow- street, October 21. Descirption of MICHAEL THOMAS PAYNE, lately a clerk in the office of the School Board, at Barnsley, now wanted on warrant for stealing £ 150 from his employer. He left Barnsley on 8th instant : lie is 21 years of age, 5 ft. 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, very slight moustache, a clerk, native of Barnsley, of Irish parents and of good education. Has a slight impediment in his speech. ' When he left he had on a black billycock hat and dark clothes. Information at Mr. Superintendent's Office, Barnsley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, October 21. Absconded on 28th ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing gold and silver Watches, the property of his employers, Messrs. Chas.
