C. ##* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name^ s given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. At no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. Absconded, charged on a wajrant with forgery : CHAS. G. KETTLE, late of No. 8, Manor- view, Brixton, 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, no hair on face, may wear false, and stoops when walking ; dressed in brown tweed suit, and billycock hat. Is well known in betting circles and pigeon shooting clubs, by the name of ' OHAS. KING.' Information to Inspector McWiiliams, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. G.— Bow- street, October 16. burglariously entered and stolen therein : a pair of silver sugar Tongs, marked ' T. A. J.'; also an ivory cigar Case, mounted with silver, and marked with, the initials ' T. A. J.' Information to Mr. Superintendent Dunham, Police Station, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- street, October. 14. Stolen from Cross Deep House, Twickenham, on 27th ult.: 3 silk Dresses, first, a pale blue silk, blue crepe de chene flounces, top skirt square body, trimmed white lace and blue crepe de chene and pink bOws, and pink silk sash ; second, pink silk, handsomely embroidered in front, sides, and round bottom of skirt, pink silk flounces, square body, embroidered, and trimmed white lace and fringe ; thir. i, a white chene ( Dolly Varden) top skirt and body trimmed blue silk, pinked out. Also stolen a black velvet square Body, trimmed lace and steel beading; 2 large pieces of black Velvet; a large grey Cashmere Cloak with hood, lined with blue silk, and a plaiting of grey Cashmere round bottom; a white Cashmere opera Cloak, trimmed with gold braid and fringe ; a pair of red rep Curtains, with border of black and gold ; a gentle- man's black cloth Coat, lined with sable, deep fur collar, and Prussian make ; a green silk Dress, trimmed pale blue satin, and body to match, with white lace on sleeves and down front; a blue net and blue satin ball Dress, with sash and flowers; 2 large white Counterpanes ; 2 white Blankets ; and a quantity of rough dried summer Clothes, Dressing Gowns, and lace Curtains.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, Oct. 14. ROBBERY AND [ LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person in Preston, on 16th ultimo : a ' silver lever Watch, No. 5011. Stolen from the person at Preston, on 11th instant : a silver lever Watch, No. 6434, maker Thomas Elliot, Preston. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston.— Bow- street, October 14. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. The man advertised in the Police Gazette of 7th. instant, charged with housebreaking at Nurton, near Wolverhampton, on 25th ultimo, has been apprehended and committed for trial. He gives the name of JAMES SMITH, but pledged the articles in the name of HUGH HOLLAND ; he is a native of St. Helen's, Lancashire, 32 years of age, 5 ft. If ins. high, fresh complexion, brown hair, cu4-. short, light blue eyes, stoutish build, small brown moustache, whiskers shaded off, has cut marks on left temple, on each eyebrow, and on bridge of nose, also on first finger of left hand,. and front teeth much decayed; dressed in old rough blue pilot jacket, lined with red and blue plaid, li^ ht cord trousers, moleskin vest, black soft billycock hat, and strong lace- up boots. Information to Inspector Gilbride, Tettenhall, near Wolverhampton, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, October 18. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Richard West, at Folly- lane, near Melksham, on 13th instant, by means of housebreaking : an old pair of cotton cord Trousers, very dirty in the inside of seat; a moleskin Waistcoat, lined with striped flannel, lining mended with a piece of bed tick ; and a new white calico Shirt, man's size. Supposed by a tramping labourer, from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, light complexion, small whiskers and moustache, ring tattooed on one finger, and a sore on one ear ; dressed in brown twilled slop jacket, cord trousers and vest, rather large buttons on vest, hard bowler hat, and heavy lace- up boots. Information to Inspector Perrett, Melksham, Wilts.— Bow- street, October 18. Description of JOHN TERRY, plasterer and fowl- dresser charged with breaking into a warehouse and stealing therein on 1st instant : he is about 27 years of « age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair and moustache ; was dressed in a pair of cord trousers, which have been repaired with some dark material at the bottoms. Informa- tion to Chief Constable Jackson, Central Police Offices, Sheffield.— Bow- street, October 18. Between 6 and 7' 30 p. m. on 13th instant, the cottage of Richard West, of Folly- lane, near Melksham, was broken and entered, and a pair of dirty cord Trousers, a cord Vest, lined with striped flannel, and a new calico Shirt, stolen. Supposed by a tramp, from 30 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, light hair and moustache ; dressed in short, dirty jacket° or slop, old brown trousers, and low black hat. Stated he had been in the East India Company service, but had the appearance of a farm labourer. Information to Mr. Superintendent White, Trowbridge, or to Inspector Perrett, Melksham, Wilts.— Bow- street, October 16. During the night of 9th instant, the residence of Trew jegon, Esq., situate in Chalvey Park, Slough, Bucks, was HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen, a Pony ( recovered) by THOMAS STOKES, 18 years of age, and 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high; dressed in brown coat, plaid vest, soft billycock hat, wears wrapper round neck. Supposed to be in company of horse copers, and is well known to dealers in Kent and Sussex. Warrant issue< J. Informa- tion to Mr. Superintendent Wilshere, Town Hall, Folkestone, Kent.— Bow- street, October 18. Stolen on 9th instant, from a field at Borras, near Wrexham, Denbighshire : a black Mare, 6 years old, 15 hands high, has a wound mark on each side of the ribs. She was traced to Chester Fair on 10th instant, and supposed to have been sold there to a horse dealer. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of the offender and recovery of the Mare. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wilde, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, October 14. Stolen during the night of 7th instant, property of Mr. Thomas Alcock, of Kiddermoore Green, Brewood : a dark brown Horse, 8 years old, in fair condition, white star on forehead, light legged, and bang tail, about 16 hands high, shod in leather rings on forefeet; also stolen same time and place, a strong carrier's spring Cart, painted brown picked out with red, of old painting, the name ' Thomas Alcock, Kiddermoore Green,' painted on off side; and a set of strong brass mounted Harness. Information to Sergeant Wheaver, Police Office, Penltridge, or to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Police Office, Forebridge, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, October 11. Stolen from a field near Bradford House, Belbroughton, on 3rd instant : three white faced Lambs, Lincoln breed, marked with ring and letter ' C. in centre with pitch, ily powdered on back with red powder. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wheeler, Stourbridge, Worcestershire. — Bow- street, Octcber 11. Stolen from a, stable in a stone quarry, Eddisbury, near Northwich, during the night of 9th instant, or early the following morning : a brown cart horse, small white star on forehead, about 8 years old, 15 hands high, and heavy shod. Information to Mr. Superintendent Mayo, Police Office, Oakmere, Northwich, Cheshire.— Bow- street, October 11. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Bangor, about 14tli instant, charged with embezzlement : THOMAS J. WILLIAMS, a clerk, about 37 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slightly built, brown hair, small light whiskers and moustache," hazel eyes, and eruptions on face and nose ; dressed in rather shabby dark clothes, and a bowler hat. Has been in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Carnarvon, or to Mr. Superintendent Jones, Bangor.— Bow- street, October 18. Description of a youth known by thj name of ' TOM,' charged on warrant with stealing 14s., from a stall- keeper's van, at Bottesford Feast, on 16th instant : about 16 years of age, rather tall, slender build, light hair, dark eyes, rather fresh coloured, thin face, large scar on ri^ ht cheek ; dressed in shabby dark mixture cloth coat, pockets on hips, sealskin cap, old lace- up boots, and cord trousers, the right boot has a hole in the toe; he attends fairs, & c. Information to Inspector Hinds, Bottesford, near Nottingham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 18. Absconded on IOtli instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement, HENRY McDONALD, late of No. 14 Fredk. Place, Plumstead : he is 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slight build, sallow complexion, hair and moustache dark, no whiskers, dressed in dark clothes, respectable appearance, a clerk. Information. to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- streel, October 18. Absconded from Hereford on 14th instant, charged with stealing 9 Ducks; the property of Charles Williams, a Eaton Bishop, on 13th instant : JOHN ROGERS, a clerk about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair com plexion, brown hair, tuft of hair on chin, rather round shouldered ; dressed in a grey suit, and hard bowler hat; generally has a greyhound dog with him. Has been engaged in hop and wool warehouses, where he may seek employment. Information to Mr. Superintendent Cope, County Police Station, Hereford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, October 18. Description of a man charged with stealing a Coat ( recovered), from a field at Reepliam, about 1 p. m., on lltli instant, the property of George Slight : from 20 to 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, full face, fresh complexion, little or no whiskers, and stoutly built; dressed in a dark cloth cap with peak, dark coat, and grey trousers, all old and dirty. Information to Inspector Taylor, Lindsey Police Station, Lincoln.— Bow- street, October 18. Description of WILLIAM BARTLETT, alias COWEN, commercial traveller to Ind, Coope, and Co., brewers, Burton- on- Trent, charged with embezzlement, at Kendal: he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, light hair, slight moustache and whiskers, proportionate build, rather puffed and flabby about the face, as if from drink, peculiar look about the eyes, native of Canterbury, and supposed to have a brother in a . bank there ; he formerly attended to a book- stall for Smith and Sons, at Preston, Lancaster, and Carnforth Stations, on the London and North Western Railway; his wife and family are residing at Carlisle; he left Kendal on 5th instant, and proceeded to Manchester, and was there joined by a woman, and left the latter place the same day at 6' 30 p. m., is supposed to have gone to London. A photogragh of Bartlett can be seen at the Detective Office, Manchester ; photographs can be had on application to Chief Constable Wilkinson, or to Sergeant Cotton, Town Hall, Kendal, Westmorland. — Bow- street, Octobr 18. - - • Stolen on 15th instant, from the Great Western Railway Station, Paddington, about. 10.30 p. m. : a lady's large buff leather Portmanteau, lined with red leather, with the letters ' V. W. B.' on lid, containing a black Cashmere Dress and Mantle, trimmed with crape ; a black silk Dress with crape, two small Capes, and extra Bodice ; a large quantity of fine Linen, trimmed with frilling and embroidery, marked ' J. M. Bromley,' in ink ; a leather Case, containing 6 Scissors, si& er Thimble, and other things ; a green leather Case, containing Handkerchiefs, ' Ida' on lid; a Russian leather folding Writing- case, containing Letters, & e.; a red leather Glove- case ; 10 or 12 oil Paintings, 2 on canvasses 14 ins. by 12 ins., the rest smaller, painted on boards, finished sea- pieces. By two men, one about 5 feet 7 inches high, about 26 years of age, ordinary build, with slight dark whiskers, florid com- plexion ; dressed in long dark coat, grey trousers, high black hat, of gentlemanly appearance, and good address. The other a man having the appearance of a groom or stableman, about 5 feet 5 inches high, hard build, dark eyes, and pale com- plexion ; dressed in short jacket, and low hat. The first man hired the number 74 Privileged G. W. R. cab, and was joined in the station by the second man. They were driven to Trevor- square, where they alighted, the short one carrying away the Portmanteau, whilst the other paid the cabman. Information to Mr. Superintendent Mason, G. W. R. Special Police Department, Paddington.— Bow- street, October 18. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Farnworth, on 12th inst: a silver/ English lever Watch, No. 6040, maker ' George Carey, Farnworth,' on dial, had attached a long silver Guard, with brass Key. Suspicion attached to an old man who called at the house hawking brushes, but of whom no particular description can be given. Information to Mr. Superintendent Holland, County Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, October 16. Charged at Stonehaven with theft : JOHN WHITE, said to be a native of Kelso, resided for many years in Dum- fries, and for the past two or three years in Aberdeen, follows the occupation of a horse- dealer of the lowest caste, 33 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, ruddy complexion, dark hair and eyes, small dark whiskers, roundish face, small features, a firmly knit person, and weighs 136 lbs. When speaking has a habit of twitching his mouth to one side ; is generally dressed as a jockey, has a new suit of brownish tweed with tight- fitting pants, and wears a double- peaked grey cap, and white muffler. Information to Chief Constable Weir, Stone- haven, N. B.— Bow- street, October 16. Stolen from'the dwelling- house of Joseph Lomas, at Buxton, on 11th instant: a leather Purse, containing ,£ 4 in Gold and Silver ; two white handle pocket Knives, two blades in each ; a dark mixture tweed Coat ; and a pair of man's elastic- side Boots, nearly new. By a man of the following description : THOMAS JONES, baker, native of Tunstall, Staffordshire, 19 years of age,# 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, pale complexion, dark brown hair, and belongs to the 2nd Regt. Staffordshire Militia. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hallam, Police Station, Chapel - en- k- Frith, Derbyshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 16. Absconded from Hastings, on 10th instant, charged with stealing £ 6 4s. in Money, two silver Medals, one for service in the Chinese War, and one for Delhi; a Vest, and other Articles: WILLIAM WHITING, a bricklayer, about 22 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, very sore eyes light hair, cut very short, a little light hair on cliin ; dressed : 6 POLICE GAZETTE. September 27 in dark grey coat, with black velvet collar, grey trousers, and light Stanley helmet. He was formerly in the Royal Navy, from which he was discharged on account of tke defect in his eyes. Information to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, October 16. Stolen from the Bush Hotel, Farnham, - on 7th instant, an old- fashioned eight- day Clock, mahogany ease, glass at back, and stands about 12 inches high. Supposed by a man about 24 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, no beard, and dark hair ; dressed in dark blue pea jacket, and low- crowned black hat. Carried a brown leather case. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hibberd, Surrey Constabulary, Farnham.— Bow- street, October 16. Stolen between 10th and 11th instant, at No. 11, Sussex gardens, Eastbourne : a small solid silver Mug, has a single handle, embossed, engraved with the initials ' K. B., August 1873'; also £ 3 in Gold, and 3s. in silver Monies. Supposed by a man, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair complexion, light eyes, hair turning grey, and moustache, rather stout figure, gentlemanly appearance ; dressed in light brown suit, low black hard crown hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Newnham, Eastbourne, East Sussex Con- stabulary.— Bow- street, October 14. Stolen on llih instant, from the dwahing- house of Mrs. " Wilkie, Railway- terrace, Hertford: a Topcoat, since recovered; a black ribbed Undercoat; a pair of drab and brown mixture tweed Trousers and Waistcoat, with horn buttons ; a pair of men's lace- up Boots ; a blue and white striped Shirt; a white Shirt; a set of gold Studs, with pearl backs ; a gold American Dollar as a scarf pin; Cigar- case and Holder; and a gold Brooch, with a coloured photograph of a soldier in it; the property of George Clements. By a man named JAMES CARBERY, who lodged there for the night, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light brown liair, slight moustache, hazel eyes, and is marked on left arm with a cross and dots. He was formerly in the Ordnance Survey Department, left, and joined the Army, and is now a deserter from the 105th Regiment. When he left Hereford he was wearing the stolen clothes. Information to Head Constable . Tarrett, Police Office, Hertford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Oct. 14. Description of CHARLES JONES, charged with stealing a Coat, a pair of Boots, & c., on 4th instant, near Usk, and sold by him in Abergavenny, on 5th instant : he is an old soldier, 56 years of age, 5 feet 7| inches high, proportionate figure, fresh complexion, grey eyes, sandy hair, turning grey, whiskers and moustache; dressed in a soft hat, turned up at sides, and squeezed in, new cord trousers, white jacket, but has a monkey jacket with him ; he is tattooed with a bracelet, anchor, tree, and cross daggers on left hand ajid arm, two mermaids, heart, and bracelet on right arm, two buds, star, cross daggers, cross, and fish on left breast ; says he is a pensioner from 23rd Foot. Information to Mr. Superinten- dent Berthon, Usk, Monmouth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 14. Absconded on 3rd instant, from Liverpool, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 15,000, chiefly in £ 500 and £ 100 Notes of the Liverpool Branch Bank of England : WILLIAM OHMANN STAFFORD, a clerk in the said bank, 27 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, light brown hair, very curly, light moustache, otherwise cleaned shaved, nose very, prominent, and retreating chin, walks upright with his feet turned out; dressed when last seen in black frock coat, grey overcoat, and black deerstalker hat. May assume the dress of a yachtsman or midshipman. Came to London from Liverpool on 3rd instant, and is supposed to have left on the morning of 4th. Had with him two black bags, one small the other large. Has the greater part of the money with him. £ 500 reward will be paid by Messrs. Freskfield and Williams, Solicitors, 5, Bank Buildings, Lothoury, for such information as shall lead to the apprehen- sion and conviction of the accused. Information to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry.— Bow- street, October 14. Description of JOHN WARREN, charged on a warrant with larceny as a servant ( to the Honorable and Reverend C. F. O. Spencer, the Rectory, Sutton) in May last, and who afterwards enlisted in the 21st regiment of Hussars, and de- serted from Norwich, on 26th August : he is 18£ years of age, 5 feet inches high, auburn hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, is a native of Rugby, Warwickshire, is a valet, and has lived in the continent. Information to Chief Constable Smith, Ely, Cambs.— Bow- street, October 14. Description of PETER MULLIGAN, a collier, charged with stealing from a dwelling- house at Ardsley, on 6th inst : a pair of black ribbed tweed Trousers, not much worn ; and a short round blue pilot cloth Jacket, two pockets outside, ' double- breasted, and two rows of black bone buttons on breast, four on each side, one of the sleeves slightly soiled. He is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark com- plexion, eyes, and hair ; dressed in the stolen clothes, grey tweed cap with peak, and plain clogs. Information to Mr. Superintendent Sykes, Barnsley, Yorkshire. —• Bow- street, October 1 i. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Dallowgill, Laverton, between 2 p. m. and 12 midnight, on 4th instant : a suit of grey mixture Clothing, new, man's size ; a black cloth Coat, one of the laps slightly moth eaten ; a silver Watcli ; a silver Albert; and a long silver Chain. Supposed by a man, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, very short, black whiskers, stout build; dressed in black cloth coat, dark plaid trousers, old boots, very far worn, and new blue cap. Information to Mr. Superintendent Carr, Court House, Ktiaresborough, Yorkshire. — Bow - street, October 11. Description of FREDERICK STAMFORD, a sweep, 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark hair, sallow complexion ; dressed as a sweep, and has a brush and cloth with him, stolen ; charged on warrant with embezzlement at Bridgnorth, on 1st instant; supposed to be a native of Bir- mingham, and well known as a tramping sweep at Wolver- hampton, Walsall, and Dudley. Information to Head Constable Cole, Bridgnorth, Salop.— Bow- street, October 11. Stolen from a dwelling- house at furley, on 10th instant: an old- fashioned gold Geneva Watch, large, gold face, figures nearly worn out; and an Albert gold Chain, trace pattern. Supposed by a tramp, about 26 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, sandy hair, brown coat, cord trousers, walks • lame or slovenly. Information to Inspector Ghey, Wilts Constabulary, Bradford- on- Avon.— Bow- street, October 11. Description of ISAIAH W. DICKSON, charged on a warrant with having embezzled Monies belonging to his employer, Mr. W. Watson, tobacco manufacturer, of King- street, Maidstone ; he is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fair complexion, supposed blue eyes, dark hair, whiskers and moustache, and clean shaved under the chin, of smart appearance, and broad figure ; dressed in high black hat with crape, black trousers, grey coat, and has the appear- ance of having served in the army ; has a wife living with her friends at Flyforjl Flavel, near Worcester. Information to the Head Constable, Police Office, Maidstone, Kent.— Bow- street, October 11. Description of a man suspected of stealing a pair of men's new Boots, on 3rd instant, from the Hunters Lodge Inn, Penselwood : he is between 20 and 30 years of age, short stature, dark complexion and moustache ; dressed in bowler hat, blue monkey jacket, dirty plaid trousers and vest, linsey shirt, no necktie ; the Boots have been found at Shepton Mallet, when the person exchanged them for a second- hand pair, receiving 3s. in difference. Stated he was a coach body maker, and was going to Bristol in search of work. Convicted of stealing a pair of trousers at Cardiff, on 31st December, 1872, sentenced to 7 years penal servitude, and discharged on Sept., 1878.
