The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 10th ultimo, a newly- born male Child, in a state of imdity, was found alive in a coal house at Pan Bank, South Shields ; the Child died on 23rd ultimo. A verdict of 1 Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' has been found by the coroner's jury. .£ 50 reward will be paid by the • government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice ( not being the person who actually commited the jpirder) who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to Head Constable Richardson, Borough Police Office, Sotitli Shields, Durham.— Bow- steed, October 9. On 28th ultimo, the dead Body of a newly- born female infant was found in the wash of the sea on the South Beach, Great Yarmouth : it was wrapped in a piece of a new white calico chemise, and then tightly sewn up in a small brown towel or pudding cloth. At tlie coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. .£ 50 reward will . be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person, o. ther than a police officer, who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such information as shall lead to a like result. Information to Chief Constable Ogden, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.— Bow- street, October 9. swinging his umbrella when walking, and has thin white hands ; dressed in a tall silk hat, black surtout coat, made of fancy cloth, white shirt front with gold studs, dark tie, turn- down collar, greyish tweed trousers, generally carried a dark silk umbrella with white smooth ivory handle, round and thick at top and gradually tapered downwards, yellow gloves, the initials ' W. L.' were sewn on one of his shirts. Had the appearance of a man in business or professional man. He was seen in Edinburgh on the day the forgery was committed speakiDg to a middle aged short stout man, about 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, with bushy whiskers, and who wore a tall hat and dark coat. Obtained from a firm at Chester, on 24th ultimo, by means of a forged order or request: six linen Sets; one black silk Polonaise, trimmed with black moss fringe trim- ming ; one black Cashmere Polonaise, trimmed with kilting of Cashmere and band of black silk ; one black silk Skirt, trimmed with two rows of kilting of Cashmere, and one standing up to head it; one dark brown Cashmere Costume, trimmed with silk of same colour, kilting of Cashmere, straps of silk on skirt, jacket bodice trimmed with silk, and silk waistband ; one black Cashmere Costume, trimmed with black velvet and fringe, three straps of velvet on each side of skirt, • jacket bodice trimmed with velvet, fringe, and gold buttons ; one black silk Costume, with piece of silk for bodice unmade, back of skirt scalloped at bottom and kilting falling from underneath, front of skirt trimmed puffings of silk ; six Collarettes, fox, beaver, sable, seal, & c. ; three striped Skirts ; one Skirt, dark green ground with light green and yellow stripes By a woman between 30 and 40 years of age, tall, rather stout, and fresh looking; dressed in a blue and white cotton dress, long black jacket, trimmed with braid and pockets outside, light coloured kind of slouched hat, with a flower like a rose in it, and brown thread or cloth gloves, with a hole in one finger. She left Chester by 3.10 p. m. for Birk- enhead or Liverpool, on 24th ultimo, and had with her two rlpnl boxes, 26 inches long, 20 inches wide, and 12 inches deep. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester, Cheshire.— Bow- street, October 9. Description of F. FTJRBEY, charged with obtaining, on 2nd instant, by means of a forged cheque Five £ 100 Notes, and Twenty £ 5 Notes of the Commercial Bank of Scotland : be is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, well made but not stout, slightly round shouldered, and hangs his head a little while walking, pale thin face, rather sunken eyes and heavy eyebrows, thoughtful expression, sandy- coloured whiskers a little after the ' Dundreary style,' inclined to be curlv and strong, shaved on chin, brownish fair hair, parted in centre, cut short and neatly kept, reddish moustache, cut short and slightly turned up at the ends, spoke with English accent, but was suspected from some expressions he used to be Irish, has a cool, collected manner, generally walked with bis left hand in his trousers pocket, has a careless way oi BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of 5th instant, a grocer's shop at Iwade, Kent, was burglariously entered and stolen therein : 7 lbs. of Bacon ; 4 lbs. Dutch Cheese ; six cotton pocket Handker- chiefs, coloured ; three pairs of elastic Braces ; 6 lbs. neck of Pork ; 1 lb. Sausages ; 1 lb. Butter ; 2 lb. Sugar ; 2 lbs. Tobacco ; a plum Cake, weight 3 lbs ; 2 lbs. Sweets; some Bread ; and 16s. in Money of various coins. Supposed by a man, about 50 years of age, 6 feet 2 or 3 inches high, long thin face, slightly freckled, slight sandy whiskers, military appearance, and is a tramping labourer. Information to Mr. Superintendent Mayne, Police Court, Sittingbourne, Kent.— Bow- street, October 9. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Ann Walker, Penn, by means of housebreaking, on 28th ultimo : a pair of drab cotton cord Trousers with fla. p, man's size ; a pair of lace- up Boots ( recovered); a pair of old grey cotton Stockings, man's size; an old fashioned silver verge Watch, white dial, English figures, steel Chain attached; and a German silver verge Watch, white dial, Roman figures, and brass Chain attached. Supposed by a tramp, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, stout build, dark brown hair, no whiskers, dark complexion, and dirty looking; dressed in old corded brown jacket, cotton cord trousers, nearly new, turned up at the bottoms, hard blick felt hat, and old elastic side boots. Information to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Bilston, or to Sergeant vValters, Sedgley, near Dudley, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, October 7. Description of a man, charged with stealing a quantity of Wearing Apparel by means of housebreaking, at Nurton, near Wolverhampton, on 25 th ultimo ( all the property since found pledged, except a double- breasted black cloth Waist- coat, which has stain marks in one of the pockets from a broken egg), about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, no whiskers, small light- coloured moustache, light brown hair, and front teeth much discoloured, as if decaying ; dressed in blue pilot jacket, lined with red and blue plaid, moleskin vest, light cord trousers, which appeared as if recently washed, strong lace- up boots, and black soft billycock hat. Information to Inspector Gilbride, Tetfenhall, near Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Oct. 7. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Old Sodbury, Gloucestershire, between 9 p. m., 3rd, and 7 a. m. on 4th inst. : 2 calico Sheets, marked ' Smith' ; 1 table Cloth, supposed marked ' C. S.'; 2 diaper Towels ; a woman's grey dress, trimmed with military braid; a pair of men's old grey Trousers, blask stripe up side of legs, hole in knee ; a child's jnuslin Robe; a tin of Cadbury's Cocoa, ounces ; a pair of old glazed Knickerbockers, for a boy 16 years of age. Infor mation to Mr. Superintendent Critchley, Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, October 7. During the night of 3rd instant, the beerhouse and grocer's shop of James Clifford, of Hazlebeach, Northampton- shire, was broken into and stolen therein : six Sovereigns ; three Half Sovereigns ; about 10s. in Silver ; three or four Shillings in Copper Money; about 3 lbs. of Rice ; about 3 lbs. common black Tea ; about 3 lbs. of moist white Sugar; about 3 lbs. ginger- bread Cakes; about 1 lb. of mixed Sweets of various colours ; three 1 ozs. and £ ozs. of common dark Tobacco, wrapped in a piece of the Northampton Herald Newspaper, dated September 7th, 1878; a child's white coti- on Pocket- handkerchief, new and not hemmed ; several packets of washing Powoer, ' Hudson's'; four or live boxes of cigar Lights, box headed ' Braided fixed Stars'; a pair of man's new watertight Boots, No. 10, lace- up, with brass eyelet- holes, two rows of small round headed nails round the outside, and three or four rows up the centre of foot, and of country make, hand sewn. Information to Inspector Tye, Police Station, Little Bowden, Northamptonshire. — Bow- sti et, October 7. Between 1- 30 p. m. and 3 p. m. on 5th instant, the cottage of Henry Brayford, Broomhill, Hednesford, labourer, was broken into, and stolen therein : a single- breasted black frock Coat; a ditto Vest; a pair of black cloth Trousers ; a black sammy Hat; about 2J lbs. of Pork ; two Eggs ; and 7s. 9d. in Silver, the clothes are all worn. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hill, Brownhills, or to Sergeant Brooks, Hednesford, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, October 7. a little white over the hoof of fore legs, short tail, very hollow eyes. J2 reward will be paid by Richard Saunders, 33, William- street, Brighton, to any person who will give any information which will lead to the recovery of the said horse, and conviction of the offender or offenders, to Chief Constable Glenister, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, October 11. Stolen during the night of 7th instant, property of Mr. Thomas Alcock, of Kiddermoore Green, Brewood : a dark brown Horse, 8 years old, in fair condition, white star on forehead, light legged, and bang tail, about 16 hands high, shod in leather rings on forefeet; also stolen same time and place, a strong carrier's spring Cart, painted brown picked out with red, of old painting, the name •' Thomas Alcock, Kiddermoore Green,' painted on off side ; and a set of strong brass mounted Harness. Stolen from a field near Bradford House, Belbronghton, on 3rd instant : three white faced Lambs, Lincoln breed, marked with ring and letter ' U.~ in cenW-^ tb pitch, : 1y powdered on back with red. powder. Information to Mr. Superintendent. Wheeler, Stourbridge, Worcestershire, — Bow street, October 11. Stolen from a stable in a stone quarry, Eddisbury, near Northwicli, during the night of 9th instant, or early the following morning : a brown cart horse, small white star on forehead, about; 8 years old, 15 hands high, and heavy sljod. Information to Sir. Superintendent Mayo, Police Office, Oakmere, Northwich, Cheshire.— Bow- street, October 11. Further information respecting the person who stole the horse during . the night of 10th ultimo, at Thorpe Acre, and advertised in the Police Gazette of 16th ultimo, the property of Louise Bradshaw, which has since been recovered : TO, LEES, alias BOATER, labourer, of West Bromwich, 22 yrs. of age, 5 feet 5 or <> inches high, slender made, long thin pale face, light brw# iij hair, grey eyes, Blight light walks a little lame wi: h left leg, and turns his left; toe out much more than his right one, left leg is much yiiuner th ail right one, little toe of left foot - frraps over the other, two- l^ rge top teeth in front, one of which is partly broken off; dressed when last seen at West Bromwich, on 2nd instant, in a long dark rough overcoat, moleskin trousers, dirty tight- fitting moleskin vest, navvy's slop, large collar worked with braid, heavy watertight boots, blue check shirt, dark red muffler, and hard black hat. It is supposed he may seek employment as a nawy on 3ome railway in course of formation. A reward of £ 3 will be given by Mrs. Bradshaw, the owner of the horse, on the apprehension and conviction of the above. Information to Mr. Superintendent Peberdy, Loughborough, Leicestershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 9. Charged on warrant for obtaining, by false pretences, on 17th ultimo, two Horses ( recovered) : . TAMES SAWYER, 50 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fair complexion, grey hair and whiskers, flat mouth, short legs, and inclined to be stout; dressed in two dark overcoats ( under one longest), blue neckerchief with white spots, and soft white felt hat; represents himself to be a farmer at Distillery- lane, Norwich ; is believed to be a man known as FARMER RINGWOOD, who has been convicted c. f similar offences, and who has sons residing at Norwich and Yarmouth. And a man known as JACK THE TAILOR, 40 years of- age, 5 feet 6 inches higlf, dark complexion, and whiskers shaved oft ; dressed in dirty brown overcoat, and brown billycock hat. Both horse copers. Stolen. from Slip End, Beds, about 21st ultimo : a bright chesnut mare Pony, about 13 hands high, a white mark down the nose, and broken kneed, the property of Joshua Dickenson. Stolen from a field at Kirkby Malzeard, between 7 p. m. 4th and 8 a. m. on 5th instant: an aged bay mare Pony, about 14 hands high, has had both knees broken, spavin on near hind leg, unhealed wound cut inside off fore leg, tail newly cut close to stump, short cropped mane, newly shod, and in moderate condition. Information to Mr. Superintendent Carr, Court House, Knaresboro.— Bow- street, October 7. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolon from a field at Bohemia, Hastings, between 8 and 9 p. m. on 1st instant: a brown gelding cart Horse, about 14| hands high, aged, in good condition, unusually hairy legs, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Dallowgill, Laverton, between 2 p. m. and 12 midnight, on 4th instant : a suit of grey mixture Clothing, new, man's size ; a black cloth Coat, one of the laps slightly moth eaten ; a silver Watch ; a silver Albert; and a long silver CJiain. Supposed by a man, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, very short, black whiskers, stout build"; dressed in black cloth coat, dark plaid trousers, old boots, very far worn, and new blue cap. Information to Mr. Superintendent Carr, Court House, Knaresborough, Yorkshire. — Bow - street, October 11. Absconded from Wisbech on 8th instant, charged with stealing £ 9 in Money; a gold Seal ; a Purse ; and a Pen- knife, from a dwelling- house : FRANK JAMSON, 23 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, very slight whiskers and moustache ; dressed in speckled cloth coat, light cloth trousers and vest, hard round- crownt d black 6 POLICE GAZETTE. September 27 chummy hat, has a scar on left cheek, neck, arms, and legs ; he is a great bicyclist, attends most races, and has won many bicycle prizes. Information to Head Constable Sharpe, Wisbech, Cambs, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, and of whom a photograph may be obtained.— Bow- street, October 11. Description of FREDERICK STAMFORD, a sweep, 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark hair, sallow complexion ; dressed as a sweep, and has a brush and cloth • with him, stolen ; charged on warrant with embezzlement at Bridgnorth, on 1st instant; supposed to be a native of Bir- mingham, and well known as a tramping sweep at Wolver- hampton, Walsall, and Dudley. Information to Head Constable Cole, Bridgnorth, Salop— Mow- Street, October 11. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Turley, on 10th instant: an old- fashioned gold Geneva Watch, large, gold face, figures nearly worn out; and an Albert gold Chain, trace pattern. Supposed by a tramp, about 26 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, sandy hair, brown coat, cord trousers, walks lame or slovenly. Information to Inspector Ghey, Wilts Constabulary, Bradford- on- Avon.— Bow- street, October 11. Description of ISAIAH W. DICKSON, charged on a • warrant with having embezzled Monies belonging to his employer, Mr. W. Watson, tobacco manufacturer, of King- street, Maidstone : he is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fair complexion, supposed blue eyes, dark hair, whiskers and moustache; and clean shaved under the chin, of smart appearance, and broad figure ; dressed in high black hat with crape, black trousers, grey coat, and has the appear- ance of having served in the army ; has a wife living with her friends at Fiyford Flavel, near Worcester. Information to the Head Constable, Police Office, Maidstone, Kent.— Bow street, October 11. Description of a man suspected of stealing a pair of men's new Boots, on 3rd instant, from the Hunters Lodge Inn, Penselwood : he is between 20 and 30 years of age, short stature, dark complexion find moustache ; dressed in bowler hat, blue monkey jacket, dirty plaid trousers and vest, linsey shirt, no necktie; the Boots have been found at Shepton Mallet, when the person exchanged them for a second- hand pair, receiving 3s. in difference. Stated he was a coach body maker, and was going to Bristol in search of work. The boots he had in exchange were old- fashioned lace- up ones, light make, and he cut them down the front and across the vamp to ease his feet, which were very sore. He can be identified. Information to Mr. Superintendent Sheppard, Wincanton, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, October 11. The man advertised in the Police Gazette of 7th instant, as being suspected of having stolen a Jacket, & c., from the ' Golden Ball' inn, Madeley Wood, on 1st instant, has been apprehended and remanded to Salop Prison until loth instant: he gave his name as GEORGE WILLIAMS, a native of Dudley, but has generally resided in different parts of Stafford- shire. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Ivins, Wellington, or to Sergeant Turner, Iron Bridge, Salop.— Bow- street, October 11. Description of WILLIAM WATKINS, farmer, and overseer of Milton Damerell, Devon, who absconded about 24th September 1878, charged on a warrant with embezzling about £ 90, the property of the Guardians of the Holsworthy Union : he is about 43 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion hair and whiskers, heavy features, head and eyes inclined upwards, and across when speaking to anyone, has lost right eye, and has a glass one put in its place. In- formation to Mr. Superintendent Sargent, L Division, Devon Constabulary, Holsworthy, Devon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 9. Absconded from Oldham, on 4th ultimo, charged with _ £ 99, consisting of £ 41 10s. in Gold, and £ 58 10s. in Silver, which had been entrusted to him to pay over to the cashier of the Bardsley Colliery Co., the money was in a brown leather satchel, with ' Bardsley Colliery Co.' engraved on the lock : WILLIAM KENYON, a native of Ashton- under- Lyne, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, cut short, no whiskers, and is slightly bow- legged; dressed in a dark cloth coat, cord trousers, dirty red plaid scarf, check shirt, and shoes ; he has been engaged as a carter for about a fortnight, but has been a piecer in a cotton mill ; he will probably endeavour to emigrate. £ 5 reward will be paid by Mr. John Fielding, coal agent, Oldham, to any person giving such information as will lead to his arrest. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Oldham, Lancashire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 9. Stolen from Windsor, on 2nd instant : a brown grey tweed mixed Jacket, three pockets stitched on the sides ; also a black frock Coat, double- breasted, inside pocket on left side, and two tail pockets,' has been turned ; also three paii- s of Spectacles. By two men, one about 5 feet 10 . inches high, dark complexion and moustache; the other iibout 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion ; both wearing black overcoats, dark trousers, and deerstalker hats. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hayes, Borough Police Office, Windsor, Berks. — Bow- street, October 9. Stolen on 30th ultimo : a Horse and Waggonette, ( since recovered), the property of Mr. Bonham of Northampton by a man about 24 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, propor- tionate build, fair complexion, light hair whiskers t'nd mous- tache, dressed in tweed suit and black biily hat. Information to Chief Constable Keenan, Boro Police, Northampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 9. Charged, on warrant, with stealing from furnished lodg- ings, on 19th ultimo : a brown japanned Cash Box, containing a silver lever Watch, white dial, gold hinges, maker ' Arnot, London'; a gold lever Watch, white dial, gold hands, engine- turned case, maker ' Chadwick, Liverpool,' No. 4108 ; a gold Geneva hunting Watch, white dial, gold hands, engine- turned cases ; two gold guard Chains, one secret link, the other gold wire pattern, the latter has a gold foreign Coin, size of a half sovereign, attached ; 12 silver Tea Spoons, 6 of them marked ' S'; a gold mourning Ring set with a diamond; and £ 1 17s. 6d. in Money : JOHN J3ROWN, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, no whiskers or moustache, fresh complexion, and brown hair ; dressed in brown tweed suit. Said he was a jeweller, and had somejallilminium chains. & c. in his possession. His relations are hatters in Birmingham, He is accompanied by a woman ( reputed wiie), JULIA BROWN or COLLINS, about 26 years of age, medium size, dark hair and complexion, and pregnant. Their luggage consisted of one brown and one oak coloured tin boxes. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool.— Bow- street, October 9. Absconded from St. Thomas- street, Ryde, on 24th ult. : WILLIAM BOLTON, alias BRANFACJRD, RUSSELL, or BURT, a groom, belonging to the Hants Artillery Militia, Gosport, 31 years of age, 5 feet 6J inches high, fresh com- plexion, high cheek bones, blue eyes, dark brown hair, cut short, and scar on left side of Chest; charged with stealing a white Mackintosh, ( since recovered), the property of the Hon. Gerald Fitzgibbon, his master ; he was dressed when last seen in light tweed suit. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Burt, Borough Police, Ryde, Isle of Wight, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 9. Further information respecting THOMAS KILBURN, late relieving officer of the Daventry Union, advertised in the Police Gazette of 8th July, 1878 : he has been lately living in the East end of London.
