The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Offie3 Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Found on 7th instant, in the river Stour, at Wimborne . Minster, Dorset, the dead body of a newly born male child, wrapped up in brown paper, and tied tightly round with cord, to which was suspended a large brick- bat; the body appeared to have been in the water two or three weeks. At an inquest held on 9th instant, the medical evidence proved that the child was killed before it was thrown into the river. A veidict of 1 Wilful Murder' has been returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Dorset Constabulary, Wimborne.— Bow- street, September 11. Absconded, charged on a sheriff's warrant with an assault committed on a man to the danger of life, and theft of £ 10 on 3rd instant: BENJAMIN BOWMAN, an Irish labourer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slender made, dark hair, no beard or moustache, left little finger has been crushed and bent by a recent accident and is still bandaged; dressed in dark tweed coat, trousers, and vest, well worn. Accompanied by his wife, who is about 35 years of age, low set, slender made, thin white face, has a mole or wart on chin with two or three hairs growing on it; and his son James, about 12 years of age. Stolen from the person at Richmond races, on 3rd inst. : a gold lever Watch No. 53914, maker Hirst Brothers, Leeds, Information to Head Constable Camfield, Boro Police Office, Richmond, Yorkshire.— Bow- strac, September 9. Stolen from the person in Newcastle- under- Lyme, on 21st ultimo : a gold lever hunting Watch, No. 32259, maker Isaac Cohen, Birmingham, had a dent on the outer case, and the minute hand broken, also attached an old fashioned gold fob Chain, with large seal and yellow stohe. Information to Head Constable Blyth, Borough Police Office, Newcastle- under- Lyme.— Bow- street, September 6. FORGERY. Absconded, charged at Sheffield, on warrant with forgery: GEORGE PIGOTT, a rent and debt collector, about 21 or 22 " years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, slender build, fresh complexion, hair inclined to be saudy. clean shaved, of o- entlemanly appearance ; generally dressed in a dark suit, and black billycock hat. It is supposed that he will endeavour to leave the country. Information to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield.— Bow- street, September 13. JOHN, WILLIAM, and HENRY MORRIS, charged with Forgery at Bradford- on- Avon, on 5th instant, advertised in Police Gazette of 11th instant, have been apprehended. — Bow- street, September 13. Description of WILLIAM RESTARICK, charged on warrant with forging an Acceptance of a Bill of Exchange for i' 25 : he left Bampton, Devon, on 21st ultimo, where he carried on the business of a draper and grocer. He is about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, hair, and moustache, hair and whiskers tinged with " rey, and hair rather long and inclined to curl, a little bald on top of he<* d, high forehead, rather long nose, walks with a short quick step, and carries his head a little over towards his left shoulder; generally dressed in dark cloth suit with hard black bowler hat, and is of respectable appear- ance and good address. Stolen from the person at Bolton, on the night of 22nd ultimo • a gold skeleton lever Watch, No. 3302, may or may not have the makers' names ' Samuel and Rogers, Liverpool,' on the works. Had attached a gold Albert Chain, curb pat- tern 21 ounces weight, 18 carat-, and crown stamped on each • ink'and had affixed thereon a Guinea, mounted with small vino-' £ 5 reward will be paid by the owner for the recovery of the property, and conviction of the thief or thieves. During the night of 6th instant, the dwelling- house, of Mrs. Crowley, Willand- terrace, Spalding, was feloniously entered, by breaking a pane of glass in back room window, and stealing therein ; a bottle of Wine ; a shell pattern old silver tea caddy Spoon : 4 gents gold Pins, two mosaic, and the others plain. A man is suspected who was seen near the Terrace on 6th, at about 8 p. m., and again about 7 a. m. 7th instant, apparently the worse for drink, and a stranger, 30 or 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 6 inches high, dark com- plexion and hair, long dark bush'ey whiskers ; dressed in black billy hat, dark long top coat, and dark cloth trousers. Information to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, September 9. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Higham, Kent, on 2nd instant: two pairs of Trousers and Vest ( recovered), and a black silk Neckerchief. By an Italian, 30 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark complexion and hair ; dressed in ihonkey jacket, white straw hat, and the stolen neckerchief. Information to Mr. Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, September 6. ° HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. On 4th instant, a cream- coloured Mare, about 6 years old, 15 hands high, white near fore fetlock, white on inside of near hind leg, saddle mark on back, and a few white hairs on forehead, had on a second hand Saddle, and a snaffie Bridle, was left at a public- house, at Waterston, Pembroke- shire, about 1' 30 a. m., by a man unknown : about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair, sandy whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, and carried a mackintosh or dark overcoat on his arm. The mare is supposed to have been stolen. Informa- tion to the County Chief Constable, Haverfordwest, Pem- brokeshire.— Bow- street, September 13. Stolen during the night of 29th ultimo, from a field adjoining the back common, Turnham Green : a grey roan Horse, 15 hands high, rising 5 years old, stoutly built, long pastern joints, slight mark on forehead, and thick seam under belly. A reward of £ 20 will be paid by Mr. Holton, King street, Hammersmith, to any person who will give such infor- mation as will lead to the conviction of the offender and recovery of the Horse. Information to Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard.— Metropolitan Police, September 13. Stolen from Potteme, since 6th instant, the property of Charles Hillier : four Lambs, three of which are black, and one is a ram Lamb, not marked. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Woodman, Wilts Constabulary, Devizes. — liow- street, September 13. "" Supposed stolen from Upper Penn, near Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, on 1st instant, the property of Edward Tandy ': a roan Horse, 8 years old, 15 hands high, blistered on off fore foot, and in good condition. Information to Chief Superin- tendent Mclrea, Bilston, or to Sergeant Walters, Police Office,, Sedgley, near Dudley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Sept. 13. Absconded from Ringwood, Hants, charged with stealing a Mare from Holmsley, in the New Forest, in January, 1836, --. since recovered : CHAI1LE& BUNGAY, a labourer, it native of Ashley, Hants, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout build, rather round features, light brown or sandy hair and whiskers, thick lips. He has a wife and one child with him, and is supposed to be working in the neighbourhood of Bath or Bristol. Information to Mr. Superintendent Brinson, Ringwood, Hants, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 13. . Further infoftnation respecting the four Sheep stolen from Tybroughton, and advertised in Police Gazette of 11th instant : the Sheep has been recovered, and WILLIAM ROBERTS, pig dealer, Whitchurch, has been apprehended on a charge of stealing the same ; description, 46 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, black hair, small tuft of dark whiskers on the side of the face. Informa- tion to Mr. Superintendent Bolton, Hannock, Whitchurch, Salop.— Bow- street, September 13. Stolen between 10th July and 23rd ultimo, from the Hill pasture, on the Farm of Letter, Perth : 22 black faced Ewes, various ages, marked, a back half off each lug, branded ' C. C.' on far horn, runner across nose, and letter ' C.' in tar on near side, rib, shoulder, or hind quarter, according to age; and 17 blackfacpd Lambs, marked, a back half off each lug. Information to* Chief Constable Dodd, County Police Office, Perth .- Bow- street, September 11. Stolen from a field at High- lane, Norbury, during the night of 6th instant, the property of John Grantham, farmer: a brown Mare, medium build, 16 hands high, 4 years old, a white spot on centre of forehead, and small white streak down the face, and a white nostril. £ 2 reward will be given for information leading to the apprehension of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the mare. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hindley, County Police Station, Stockport, Cheshire.— Bow- street, September 9. Description of three horses left in a field at Brjtford Fair, on 12th ultimo, by a man unknown, about 25 or 26 yrs. of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, had the appearance of a gipsy, a horse dealer, and has not since been seen : 1st, a roan Mare, 17 hands high, and lame on the off hind leg. 2nd, a bay Mare, 14 hands high, off hind foot white, blind on near eye, and has a large swelling, behind off shoulder. 3rd, a bay Gelding, 16 hands high, and near hind foot white. The above three Horses are all aged and in very low con- dition. Information to Mr. Superintendent Stephens, Fisherton Salisbury, Wiltshire.— Bow- street, September 9. Stolen from a field at Swanley, near Dartford, Kent, during the night of 6th instant: a light- coloured cliesnut Mare, about 16 hands high, a piece of leather under off fore shoe, and a sore above off hind foot, long tail, rather short mane; has been working at Camberwell where it was purchased on 6th instant. Absconded on 9th instant, from 27, Holies- street, Mary- lebone, embezzling £ 6 5s. : a man, 20 years of age, 5 ft. 8 ins. high, dark complexion and hair, no whiskers, and thin build • dressed in dark tweed suit, and billycock hat; last known address 3, Denmark- street, B^ sbiiry.— Metropolitan Police, D Division, Sept. 13. 6 P O L I C E GAZETTE. September 13 Stolen on 2nd instant, from John Hayward, Newtown, Essington : a black cloth Jacket, pockets on hips, and one inside left breast; a silk Handkerchief, orange ground with white spots; a gold Geneva Watch, gold face and hands, and chased back ; and 10s. in Silver and Copper. By THOMAS' BOWEN, alias BLOCKWELL, 37 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slender build, thin face, ruddy complexion, light sandy hair, and slight moustache ; dressed in black jacket, small plaid trousers and vest, and elastic- side boots. Charged with embezzling £ 1 0s. 3| d. : THOMAS TUPP, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, rather stout make, light brown hair, light sandy moustache, no whiskers ; dressed in light coloured clothes; was formerly in 42nd regiment of Foot. Information to Chief Constable Barnden, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, September 13. Charged with stealing a Ham ( recovered) on 10th inst., at Stafford : a man, 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, thin face, large nose, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, and said he was a stone mason ; dressed in old black cloth jacket, corduroy trousers, black hard felt hat, paper collar and front, blue necktie, tied with two small bows. Information to Deputy Chief Con- stable Oswell, Forebridge, or to Inspector Chaplain, Gui d- hall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, September 13. Description of EDWIN GOUGH, charged on a warrant • with stealing a pair of Boots on the night of 5th instant ( recovered), about 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion and hair, small brown whiskers and moustache, about a fortnight's growth, and slight build ; dressed in white slop, dark trousers, black billycock hat, and very dirty appearance. He is a farm labourer and follows thrashing machines about, sleeping in out- buildings. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Howells, County Police Office, Shrewsbury, or to Police Constable Griffiths, Longden, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, September 13. Stolen at Macclesfield on 4th instant : a gentleman's reversible silk Mackintosh Coat, drab one side, black the other, twill silk collar, strap on neck, with makers name on. By ALFRED KIRK, for whose arrest a warrant has been issued, a tramping groom, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 ins. high, dark hair, small dark whiskers, and walks lame ; dressed in" old black coat, with pockets behind, old dark trousers, tied round the waist with string, old lace- up boots, and black hard crowned billycock hat. Frequents low lodging- houses, and is very likely to enter some hospital, as he is suffering from disease. Information to Chief Constable, Sheasby, Maccles- field, Cheshire.— Bow- street, September 13. Description of WILLIAM HORNSLEY, a journeyman shoemaker, who absconded on 30th July, 1878, charged with having embezzled £ 3 2s. 10d., at Aldershot: he is 32 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark brown hair, thin face, pale complexion, slight figure, and round shouldered ; a native of Arundel, West Sussex; dressed in hard round felt hat, long black overcoat; has a wife and three children travelling with him. Information to Mr. Superintendent Stephenson, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street,. September 13. Absconded from Eastbourne, Sussex, on 6th instant, charged with stealing a cloth Coat, a round Frock, and a cotton Shirt ( recovered); a pair of men's lace- up Boots, light make, one of which has a piece of leather let into the front at the bottom of the lace holes to widen it across the tread ; the property of Richard Morris, chimney sweeper, in whose employ he had been for about a fortnight : HARRY PlCKNELL, from 35 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 7 ins. high, dark complexion, has a cut mark at one corner of his mouth, eyes crossed, squints, dark brown hair, has a tuft of hair on chin, projjortionate figure, is a tramping jonrneyman sweeper, but has no tools ; dressed in black felt hat, corduroy waistcoat, with fustian sleeves and brass buttons, which have animal's heads on them, corduroy trousers, and supposed to be wearing the stolen boots. He has been traced to Rye, and is supposed to be making his way through Kent. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Newnham, East Sussex Constabulary, Eastbourne, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., September 11. Description of GEORGE DAY, of Tallington, bricklayer, charged on a warrant with stealing a Purse and £ 3 in Gold, at Tallington, on 5th instant: he is 32 years of age, 5 feet 6f inches high, brown haii^, slightly bald, blue eyes, oval face, fair complexion, moustache, no beard, and proportionate build ; dressed in a dark suit, but had with him white mole- skin trousers and vest, white linen jacket, two billy hats, one soft, the other hard, marked ' C. B.' on breast, mermaid and ' E. C.' on forearm, ring second finger left hand, burn mark on left arm, lost one upper tooth, scar on forehead and inside of fourth finger, tattoo mark on back of left hand ; was con- victed of horse stealing at Bradford, on 15th October, 1872, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude, and 7 years police supervision. Information to Mr. Superintendent Brown, County Police Station, Bourn, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, September 11. Absconded from Newcastle- uuder- Lyme, on 2nd instant, charged on a warrant with stealing a Sovereign, the money of Mr. F. Bernard Cooper, his master: WALTER BARKER, a groom, about 27 years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, light brown hair, slight light whiskers, long features, large nose, sallow complexion, slender build, rather round shoulders, and when walking takes short quick steps ; dressed in grey cord trousers, dark jacket, and a black felt hat. His father is a. cab proprietor, and resides at 32, Carlisle- street, King's Cross, London, N. W., where he may go, or he will most likely seek employment at hotels, public houses, and livery- stables. Information to Head Constable Blyth, Borough Police Office, Newcastle- under- Lyme, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 9. JAMES WRIGHT, alias WATSON, alias MILLICAN and BORROWDALE, described in the Police Gazette of 16th ultimo, wanted at Appleb; for larceny, has been appre- hended and committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions. Prisoner and his wife left Appleby by train on 7tli ultimo, vift l^ orth Eastern Railway to Darlington, where they changed to Bank Top Station and booked to York, aud from there to London. It is strongly suspected that they remained in York that night. The police are particularly requested that search be. made for at least one of the Notes, No. 616, of Wakefield and Co.' s Kendal Bank. Railway Stations diould be enquired at, public- houses where they would call, both of them being fond of drink. Information to Mr. Superintendent Spencer, Appleby, Westmorland, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, September 9, Absconded from Burton- on- Trent, charged with stealing on 3rd instant a pair of Boots ( recovered) : he is about 40 yrs. of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, stoutly built, fresh complexion, sandy hair and whiskers, and blind ; dressed in light- coloured monkey jacket, dark trousers, round soft hat, and blucher boots. Supposed to travel the country, and earn his living by playing music in public houses. Information to Mr. Superintendent Bower, Burton- on- Trent, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, September 9. Absconded, charged on a warrant with larceny : JOHN McKENNA, 26 years of age, 5 feet inches nigh, dark brown hair, grey eyes, pug nose, scar on chest, face pockpitted. He has been a soldier, sometimes woiks as a labourer, is married, his wife and child reside in Gateshead. Information to Mr. Superintendent Dunn, County Constabulary, Durham. — Bow- street, September 6. Absconded, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: JOHN WILLIAM BENTLEY, late of Silsden, near Leeds, traveller in the wine and spirit trade, 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair, small light moustache ; dressed in dark mixture coat and vest, snuff- coloured trousers, low hard billycock hat, and lace- up boots. He walks very quick, visits public- houses, and is very fond of singing and playing the piano, and has been employed both in Manchester and Liverpool. Whoever shall give such information as will lead to his apprehension shall receive £ 5 reward. Information toJMr. Superintendent Exton, West Riding Constabulary, Skipton.— Bow- street, September 6.
