C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should he appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, ail Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptioas of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. build ; dressed in black corded dress, trimmed with white, black hat with white fall, small earrings in shs. pe of gold coins. Had a black portmanteau with brown straps. Both wore finger rings. The man changed the grey coat for a black one before leaving his lodgings. Stolen faom the person in Hastings, on 26th instant: a silver lever consular Watch, No. 42728, maker ( supposed) Montezani; also an oval shaped ivory Purse, bound in silver, and set with twenty- five turquoises, containing a few shillings. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Town Hall, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, August 28. Stolen from the person at Preston, on 25th instant: a silver lever Watch, No. 40.43 or 40.45, maker Thomas Bennett, Preston, had att- ched a gold Albert Guard, double bar, and a lion Shilling. Information to be given to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lan cashire.— Bow- streets, August 28. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY" WOUNDING. On the night of 9th May last, Police Constable Seats was ehot and wounded with a revolver : by JAMES ADAMS, born at Cork, by trade a bricklayer and baker, has also been a seaman, 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh com- plexion, brown hair, blue eyes, proportionate make, and oval face. Was convicted with SAMUEL ELLIS ( who is now undergoing penal servitude for life for the above offence) at the Exeter Assizes, in March, 1871, and sentenced to 8 years penal servitude for housebreaking with violence, and was released on ticket of leave in J une, 1877, being now on license although it cannot be ascertained that he reports himself at any police office. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucestershire Constabulary, Gloucester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 2. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. On the night of 23rd ultimo, a stable of Mr. Stephen Allen, of Hirwain, Glamorgan, was set on fire by some person or persons unknown, thereby destroying the building and burning to death therein a valuable Horse and other Property. £ 5 reward will be given on conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Thomas, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, September 2. FORGERY. Description of WILLIAM RESTARICK, charged on warrant with forging an Acceptance of a Bill of Exchange for J25 : he left Bampton, Devon, ou 21st ultimo, where he carried on the business of a draper and grocer. He is about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, hair, and moustache, hair and whiskers tinged with crey, and hair rather long and inclined to curl, a little bald on top of head, high forehead, rather long nose, walks with a short quick step, and carries his head a little over towards his left shoulder; generally dressed in dark cloth suit with hard black bowler hat, and is of respectable appear- ance and good address. Information to Mr. Superintendent Collins, C Division, Devon Constabulary, Cullompton, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- send, Sept. 6. Newcastle- under- BOBBEB^ AND lABCENY FBOM Stolen from the person in Newcastle- under- Lyme, on 21st ultimo : a gold lever hunting Watch, No. 32259, maker Isaac Cohen Birmingham, had a dent on the outer Case, and the minute hand broken, also attached an old fashioned gold fob Chain with large seal and yellow stone. Stolen from the person at the Saint Leonard's Regatta, on 3rd'instant- a gold English lever Watch, maker Westlake, plain case,: Art sunken glass; a gold Albert Chain, cable pattern ; and a gold Seal, with amethyst crest and < D. C P engraved thereon. Information to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, September 4. Stolen on 19th ultimo, from the person, on the Great Western Railway, between Bristol and Salisbury : a silver lever Watch, No 2548, Private No. 706- 77, engraved on inside of case. Mathews, City Police Station, September 2. Absconded from Weymouth, charged on a warrant with < stpalin< r £ 8 from the person of Kate Connell, on 27th ultimo : TOHN CLAYTON, alias SADLER, alias SMITH, about & years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, parted in front, slight moustache whiskers shaven off, has a small deep dent on chin, rather slight build ; dressed m Mack coat dark grey trousers, and dark bowler hat. He was accompanied by a woman, about 28 years of age, pale com- plexion, dark hair, hazel eyes, hair cut short in front, medium 706— 77, ' J. Nelson Information to Head Constable Salisbury, Wilts.— Bow- BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Higham, Kent, on 2nd instant: two pairs of Trousers and Vest ( recovered), and a black silk Neckerchief. By an Italian, 30 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark complexion and hair ; dressed in monkey jacket, white straw hat, and the stolen neckerchief. Information to Mr. Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, September 6. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 2nd instant, from the cottage of Britton Harris, at Calverton : a pair of men's side spring boots, goloshed No. 7 size, have been worn, and the springs a little stretched. Supposed by a tramp, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion and hair, slight dark whiskers; dressed in black round hard felt hat, and old shabby dark clothes. Supposed to be wearing the stolen Boots, an old pair of side- springs having been left in the cottage. Information to Inspector Webb, Police Station, Stony Stratford, Bucks.— Bow- street, September 4. Stolen by means of burglary, during the night of 26th ultimo, from Pendley Mansion, near Tring : a black onyx Locket, with pearl star in centre, and photograph of a lady at the back; a silver Locket with initials ' H. G. W.'; a silver Bracelet; a coral Chain; a Brooch, Necklace, and Bracelet, amethysts and bogoak ; small heart- shaped Locket, studded with turquoises ; a large black Locket, with white lilies inlaid ; a gold repeater Watch, open- face, English make, by Barraud and Lund, Cornhill; 4 scarf Pins, one dog's head, white camea, one Horseshoe, plain gold, one Woman's Head, small cameo, one Coral, with gold snake ; a set of coral shirt Studs ; a set of coral waistcoat Buttons; a pair of onyx Links ; a gold Locket, initials J . G. W.; a silver Pepper Pot ; a silver Tea Caddy. Supposed by two men, one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, very few whiskers, pockmarked ; dressed in dark pilot jacket, dark trousers, very thin shoes, and billycock hat; the other from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, rather long whiskers under chin, moustache ; dressed in long coat, Scotch cap, with piece of ribbon at the back, and light brown shoes with strap across the toe. These men change clothes with each other. £ 20 reward ^ ill be paid on the conviction of the burglars and recovery of the property. Information to Inspector Goodyear, Berkhampsted, Herts.— Bow- street, September 2. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 7 and 12 a. m. on 28th ultimo, at East Mailing, Kent: two suits of Clothes ( recovered), and a pair of light lace- up Shoes, have been recently half soled, brads on outer sides of soles, and specks on heels; the property of Moses Phillips. By two young men ( or lads), supposed to have come from Deptford, hop picking : one about 5 feet high; dressed in dark coat and vest, light trousers, black felt hat, and clogs ; the other is taller, dressed in dark coat, pepper- and- salt trousers; dark rough cap, and supposed the stolen boots. They can both be identified. Information to Sergeant Gowar, Police Station, West Mailing, Kent.— Bow- street, September 2. Stolen at East Peckham, Kent, by means of house- breaking, between 8 a. m. and 6 p. m. on 30th ultimo : a suit of dark tweed Clothes ; a pair of elastic Braces ; an old- fashioned silver pair- case Watch, maker Barcham, Tonbridge, No. 4385, long Geneva silver Guard and Key attached, the watch, guard, and key all nearly black with brimstone ; and some Provisions. Information to Sergeant Gowar, Kent Constabulary, Police Station, West Mailing, near Maidstone. — Bow- street, September 2. Charged with housebreaking at Pollington, on 26th ult.. and stealing a pair of blue cloth Trousers, blue dress Coat and Vest, a pair of new cotton cord Trousers, between 6 and 7 lbs. of uncooked Ham, an old silver verge Watch, and a blue and white bundle Handkerchief, a calico Shirt, a new white calico Nightgown, a white Smock, a drab Smock, and a gardener's Knife : a man, 30 to 35 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, ginger tuft on chin, stout build; dressed in dark short overcoat, brown smock under- neath, small billycock hat. Information to Mr. Superinten- dent Goodall, Goole, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, September 2. Stolen during the night of 30th ultimo, from the dwelling- house of Thomas Siddaway : a model of a chain Machine, four inches long, by two inches wide ; a meerschaum Pipe, with two engraved ferrules on, tw& ditto cigar Holders,| in cases ; two boxes of Cigars; two pounds of Tobacco; several packets of Cope's Mixture, of various sorts ; and a number of small memorandum Books. Also stolen during the same night from the dweUing- house of Thomas Henry Brookes : eleven pairs of Boots, all new, various sizes, some are elastic sides, the others lace- up, with, price marked on soles. Entrance effected in both eases, by breaking the window. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wollaston, West Brom- wich, or to Sergeant Asbury, Smethwick, near Birmingham. — Bow- street, September 2. During the night of 28th ultimo, the booking office at Fladbury Railway Station, Great Western Railway, was broken into by means of forcing the window: the cash, drawer was forced, and 9s. in Money stolen therefrom, including two Farthings and a French Half- penny ; also a Pack, containing 13 yards of black Russell Cord, 13 yards of drab do., 13 yards of slate- coloured Serge, 13 yards of brown jo., diamond pattern, 13 yards of trail Cord, 14 yards of another do., a grey felt Skirt, with scarlet trimmings, a do. black, 2 do., different colour, one of the Skirts marked ' W. L.' inside of band, the whole of the articles were wrapped in a piece of black American Cloth, used for packing, marked ' W. Paul,' outside, 2 leather belts round; also a Shawl. Supposed by tramps or person?, travelling the country as packmen. Information to Mr. Superintendent Stanton, Police Office, Pershore, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, Sept. 2. On 26th instant, a farm house at Thomas Close, near Penrith, Cumberland, was broken and entered, and the under- mentioned property stolen therein : a- silver lever Watch, number supposed 2796, point of hour hand broken off, old- fashioned Chain with two Seals without stones attached ; a pair of strong water- tight Boots, soles slightly worn ; a pair of slender Boots, with elastic sides, soles slightly worn; a quantity of Fowls Eggs ; a piece of Bacon ; and some Money. Infon, jtion to be given to Mr. Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's. Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, August 30. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 17th instant., at Shalden, near Alton: 2 blue check Shirts, nearly new; a pair of plain leather lace- up Boots ; a black cloth Vest; a pair of black cloth Trousers. By a man who gave the name of WILLIAM GROVES, 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, brown hair, sandy moustache; dressed in old dark jacket, blua serge or guernsey underneath, and dark cord trousers. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Waters, Hants Constabulary, Alton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 30. Stolen by means of housebreaking, about 19th instant: 1 gold Caddie Spoon, with tortoiseshell handle, ' A. J. C.' in gilt letters on handle. I pair of silver- plated Sugar Nippers, scissors shape, much ornamented, initials ' A. J. C.' 1 silver Geneva Watch, maker Andre Droz. 1 silver Albert, large round links. 1 ladies dark brown sealskin Jacket, trimmed with beaver about 6 inches deep, Muff and Hat to match. 1 ladies black silk Dress, with narrow flounces all the way up, half worn. 1 green silk Dress, had white kilting round, not much worn. 1 violet silk Dress, not much worn. 1 brown silk Dress, plain. 1 brpwn silk Dress, ribbed, fit a girl. 1 black silk velvet Jacket, trimmed with Maltese lsce, satin straps and buttens. 1 pair of ladies French kid Boots, nearly new. 1 long white ostrich Feather. 3 strings of large coral Beads, and 1 string of cornelian 1 gent's dark blue pilot Ulster, very long, ' Downs, Norwich,' on strap back of neck, not much worn. I pair of black cloth Trousers, fly fronts, lined and worn. 1 black cloth Vest, single- breasted. 1 black silk Hat.: 7 or 8 yards of black Satin. Several gentlemen's white linen Shirts, some marked in red C. A. P. C., some in ink Charles A. Cooper.. 1 large carpet Bag, flowers in centre. 1 silver pocket fruit Knife, Information to be given to Chief Constable Poyntz, Borough Police Station, Nottingham.— Bow- street, August 30. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed stolen on 19tli ultimo, from Ashdown Forest Maresfield, Sussex : a cream coloured gelding Pony, al » out 14 hands high, 6 years old, long bushy mane and tail, the mane lays the wrong side, has the letter ' E.' cut in the hair on near side of neck under mane. Information to Mr. Superintendent Peerless, Uchfield, Sussex. — Bouo- street, September 4. Absconded, charged with stealing four Horses at Fenton and Hanley, oil 11 th and 22nd ultimo ( three recovered) • THOMAS BALL or BELL, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, very stout, dark complexion, black whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin and turning grey, leans his head forward, pockmarked ; dressed in old short pilot jacket old dark cord trousers, black cap, light- coloured muffler with black spots, has the appearance of a travelling showman 8 P O L I C E GAZETTE. September 13 and talks a great deal about fighting. Description of horse not recovered : a dark bay Mare, aged, about 14£ hands high, tail cut short, lame on off hind leg, and in low condition. Stolen on the night of 31st ultimo, from a field at Hales- owen, the property of Joseph Smart 4 a brown Nag Horse, 8 years old, 14 hands 3 inches high, in good conditioE, one hind foot white, scar inside off hind shin, mane falls back in centre, had on a leather head stall; the name Baker marked on the shoes. Information to Mr. Superintendent Kemp. Halesowen, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, September 2. Stolen from Shot over Park, near Oxford, between 20th and 26 th instant : the property of Colonel Millen, 10 half- bred Oxfordshire down Lambs, in poor condition. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, August 30 LARCEN1T AID EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded, charged on a warrant with larceny : JOHN McKBNNA, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6| inches high, dark brown hair, grey eyes, pug nose, scar on chest, face pockpitted. He has been a soldier, sometimes works as a labourer, is married, his wife and child reside in Gateshead. Information to Mr. Superintendent Dunn, County Constabulary, Durham. — Bow- street, September 6. Charged with stealing £ 20 in Gold from a draw at his parent's residence, 5, Esther- place, Bacup, between 6 a. m. and 12 noon on 4th instant: a boy, 14 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, pale complexion, dark brown hair, lias a blue mark on left cheek, and scar over eyebrow ; dressed in black velvet coat, imitation sealskin cap, black and white woollen shirt, without collar, striped drab cotton trousers, and shoes. Is supposed to have gone to Liverpool, and will try to leave for America. Information to Mi-. Superinten- dent Henderson, County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— jBow- street, September 6. Absconded, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: JOHN WILLIAM BENTLEY, late of Silsden, near Leeds, traveller in the wine and spirit trade, 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair, small light moustache ; dressed in dark mixture coat and vest, snuff- coloured trousers, low hard billycock hat, and lace- up boots. He walks very quick, visits public- houses, and is very fond of singing and playing the piano, and has been employed lioth in Manchester and Liverpool. Whoever shall give such information as will lead to his apprehension shall receive £ 5 reward. Information tolMr. Superintendent Exton, West Rid . rig Constabulary, Skipton.— Bow- street, September 6. The two men advertised in Police Gazette of 2nd inst., charged with stealing wearing apparel, in a dwelling house at Aberystwith, have been apprehended, and the property re- covered.— Bow- street, September 6. Stolen from the officer's quarters, Chatham Barracks, on 31st ultimo : a half hunter silver Watch, maker Streeter, Bond- street, London, monogram ' CFGY' 011 back. By a private of the 99th Regiment, who deserted the same day, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, and hazel eyes ; dressed in pepper- and- salt tweed coat and vest, black cloth trousers, and black hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Coppinger> Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, September 4. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Northfleet, on 31st ult. : a black pilot Jacket, pockets containing a discharge from Royal Artillery, dated 3rd July, 1877 ; a dark grey Vest, a woollen Scarf, an old silver Watch, and silver guard Chain. By a lodger, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, bow legged, rather stout built, fair complexion, slight moustache, no whiskers, man and anchor one arm, man the other, and ' D. Reddon' round each wrist ; dressed in dark trousers and vest, two white slops, velvet cap, tied in front, and light lace boots. Information to Mr. Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, September 4. Stoli n from, the Buleh Farm, Gu. ilsfield, about 20th ult. : a drab waterproof Overcoat; a large English family Bible, witli gilt edges, and brass clasps. Supposed by a tramp, about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet high, about 50 years of age, light hair, and small sandy whiskers ; supposed to be well- known in Oswestry. Information to Mr. Superintendent Ellis, Welshpool, or to P. C. Rogers, Guilsfield, Montgomery- shire.— Bow- street, September 4. Stolen at Baydon, Wilts, on 27th ultimo : a cord Jaeket, a Targe size Reap Hook, nearly new ;' a bag marked May's extract; and a Rubber used for sharpening scythes. By a man, about 50 years of age, 6 feet high, dark complexion and hair, whiskers cut short, turning grey; dressed in a light twilled jacket, or may be wearing the stolen jacket, supposed cord trousers, black bowler hat, high lace- up boots. Stated he was going to Farnham, Surrey, for the hopping season. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wiltshire, Police Office, Marlborough, Wiltshire.-— Bow- street, September 2. Absconded on 4th April last, charged with embezzlement: GEORGE EDWARDS, clerk, 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion and hair, light whiskers, slight, no beard or moustache, two front teeth deficient ; dressed in dark cutaway coat, light tweed trousers, side- spring boots, high black hat. Native of Streatham, Surrey. Warrant issued. — Metropolitan Police, W Division, September 2. Stolen at Fotlieringhay, on 19th ultimo, from a hut: a silver Geneva Watch, open- face, No. 8627, seconds hands sunk, and had a German silver Guard attached. By ARTHUR BOOTH, a fitter, 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache, and chin shaved ; dressed in dark jacket, white slop underneath, dark cloth trousers and vest, very dirty, and round sealsirin cap. Has a wife living at Milton, near Blesworth. Information to Inspector Alexander, Police Station, Oundle, Northamptonshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 2. Stolen from a field at G- lentham, on 24th instant: a short drabbet slop, two buttons at the top in front, and one on each wristband, the property of Robert Radley, value 2s. By a man who was traced into Grimsby, on 25th instant with slop in his possession, and had been offering it for sale : he is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, slight build, short dark hair, whiskers and beard short and stubborn ; dressed in a navvy's drab canvas slop, fustian trousers, black billycock hat, strong lace boots. Information to be given to Inspector Taylor, Lindeey Station, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, August 30. Description of HENRY WYATT CHAPMAN, charged on warrant with stealing 15 Sovereigns, the money of Joseph Bills, at Heathfield, Sussex, on 13th instant; he is 28. to 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion and hair, small moustache, no whiskers, slight build; dressed in black cloth jacket and vest, plaid trousers, black billycock hat, and lace- up Boots. He is a carpenter by trade, and has worked for Joseph Firbank, railway contractor at Derby and other places. He married a Louisa Caroline Moore, supposed at Newthorpe, Nottingham. Information to be given to the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superintendent Waghorn, Hailsham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 30. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described.) Charged on a warrant with felony : SANDFORD FREDERICK TUCZEK, alias FREDERICK SAND- FORD and TUCKER, late clerk to Messrs. Haynes and • Jefferies, bicycle manufacturers, 56, Queen Victoria- street : he is 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, very fair com- plexion, slightly tanned, fair hair, parted in centre, brown full eyes, aquiline nose, and shoulders well set; dressed in a light tweed suit, deerstalker hat, collar of shirt worn low in neck, and. sailor's knot tie. Is an amateur bicycleist, and formerly resided at 28, Graham- street, Eaton- square. Father resides at 62, Loftus road, Shepherd's- bush, and keeps a bootmaker's shop in Conduit- street, Regent- street.
