Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE & AZETTE may be maae and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that » n information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor Ollist be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on " War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Left by a man on 10th instant, at the British Flag Inn, Northgate, Canterbury, a male Child in a delicate state of health : on the following day the child died ; an inquest was held, and a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown was returned.' He is about 26, yrs. of age, 3 ft. 4 ins. high; dressed in black coat, dark vest, soldier's serge trousers with the stripes taken off, and a felt hat; had sandy hair and whiskers with a moustache, and shaved under the chin. Supposed to belong to the Militia Reserve. A quantity of infant's clothing was left with the child, also a white shawl with spangled stripes, a white silk pocket handkerchief with a narrow blue edging, initial ' J. M. E.' on corner. Information to be given to the Chief of Police, City of Canterbury, Kent.— Bow^ street, August 19. On 13th instant, the Dead Body of a newly- born female Child was found in the Birmingham Canal, at Priestfield, Bilston, packed in one of Hudson's dry soap boxes, wrapped in part of the ' Standard' newspaper, dated 14th September,- 1871, and a piece of oilcloth wrapped round the box. An in- quest has been held on the body and verdict of ' Found dead in canal,' returned. Any information respecting the birth, or the person or persons who placed the body there, to be given to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Bilston, or at any Police Station in Stafford.— Bow- st., August 16. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Charged with setting fire to a stack of Hay and a rick of Hay, at West Kennett, oh 17th instant: a man, about 5 feet 9 inches high, young appearance, little whiskers ; dressed in black or dark coat, light straw hat, carried a black glaized bae, and umbrella. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Wiltshire, Marlborough, Wilts.-^- Bow- street, Aug. 19. instant: a silver English Lever Watch No. 17508, makers name Harris and Arrinson. Information to be given to Mr. Supt. Coope, Alfreton, Derbyshire. — Bow- st., August 19. Stolen from the person on 1st instant : a gold lever Watch, single cased, with white dial, gold hands, and black chapters; an Albert Chain, with Shield and inscription — ' Won by B. Patterson, A Battery, 1877,' attached. No. 7539, maker's name, James Hay, Leith. Also on 1st instant: a gentleman's gold hunting duplex Watch, with white dial and plain cases; an Albert Chain, curb pittern, attached. No. 5877, maker's name Grimalde and Johnston, Strand, London. On 2nd instant : a silver lever Watch, single cased, white dial, gold hands, black chapters, plain cases, German make, No. 54960, maker's name Theodore Thompson, Dumfries. On 1st instant: an old- fashioned gold Watch, white dial, one of the hands a little bent. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Malcolm, Burgh Police Chambers, Dumfries.— Bout- street, August 16. FORGERY. Description of ARTHUR PHILLIPS, a harness maker, charged on a warrant with forging a Cheque for £ 7 6s., at Crondall, on 5th instant : he is 31 years of age, 5 feet 7^ ins. high, pale complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, has three moles back of left hand, ' D' on left side, and scar on left thigh. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Stephenson, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot. — Bow- street, August 21. Description of GEORGE GUERNEY, charged on a warrant with Forgery : he left Blackburn on 12th instant, and will probably endeavour to emigrate to the United States or Canada; he is a joiner by trade, 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 ins. high, black hair, dark moustache, no whiskers,, dark eyes, dark complexion, rather long face, slender built, native of London, and speaks the London dialect, lias lost several teeth ; dressed " in black billy cock hat, black cloth shooting coat, mixture cloth trousers, Lavender coloured neck tie, and turned down collar, his father resides at Uxbridge. Information to be given to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Blackburn. — Bow- street, August 21.. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM Stolen cn 15th instant, from the person while on the Windsor Race Course : a gold hunter Watch,, maker Racine, Geneva, crest— a baboon, motto—' Crom a boo'; an open face silver Geneva Watch, maker's name on dial—' French, Royal Exchange.' Information to be . given to Mr. Superintendent Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, Maidenhead, Berkshire.— Bow' street, Aug. 23. Stolen from the person, at Deal, on 19th instant: a gen- tleman's gold English lever Watch, gold face, gold minute and hour hands, and steel second's hand. Information to be given to Head Constable Capps, Berough Police Station, Deal, Kent.- Bovj- street, August 23. Stolen from the person at Clay Cross during the 13th BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of burglary from the house of Dr. Nisbett, Gravesend, during the night of 16th instant: a ' Little Wanser' sewing Machine, lock stitoh; a ditto, ' The Speedwell,' chain stitch ; two damask table Cloths, marked ' Nisbett'; an electro- plated Cruec- stand, with six cruets , a silver mustard Spoon ; two silver salt Spoons; and a dark grey Overcoat, nearly new, marked ' Henry Smith, New- road, Gravesend,' on loop at collar. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Berry, Police Office, Gravesend, Kent. — Bow- street, August 19. Burglariously stolen from the shop of Messrs. J. and J. C. Evans, tailots, & c., in Southport, during the night of 16th iustant: a black diagonal worsted cloth Coat, loose back, has four plain bjack cloth.. buttpus down front, and four pockets outside with braided edges ; a dark grey fancy cloth double- breasted reefer Coat, with grey, red and blue tints, striped pattern, black bone buttons, lining black or brownish Italian cloth ; a light siate- cojoured cloth summer. Overcoat, buttons to match,, and lined with light Italian to match, three pockets outside an 3 one inside breast ; a pair of black diagonal worsted cft> th Trousers, fly fronts and side pockets, and two hip pockets, liued below the knee, buttons stamped ' J. and J. C. Evans, Southport'; a pair of heavy brown and black cloth fancy Trousers, fly fronts, unlined, buttons stamped ' J. and J. C. Evans, Sduthport'; a dark grey diagonal pattern tweed Coat, loose back, single- breasted, four black bone buttons, lined with Italian cloth to match ; a black cloth double- breasted Vest; a fine black diagonal twill worsted morning or frock Coat, single- breasted, bound edges, two pockets in back plaits, a ticket pocket, and a breast pocket ; a. fine black diagonal twill worsted single- breasted Vest, with collar and braided edges. The following are second- hand clothes : ajdark grey tweed mackintosh or - waterproof Coat, plain black buttons under fly ; a pair of . very light grey or lavender cloth Trousers, two top pockets ; a light brown and drab plaid fancy tweed cloth morning Coat, single- breasted, witli three or four bone buttons to match ; a pair of plain black cloth doeskin Trousers, cloth torn under brace button behind ; a new brown silk Umbrella, brown handle ; several pairs of new Braces, corded silk, French make, and stamped inside ' Charles Guyot, a Paris,' also stamped on buckles ; a black morocco leather travelling Bag. The robbery has evidently been committed by two men, as two old coats and a pair of old trousers, a pair of old boots, and old braces have been left behind. £ 5 reward will be given for such informa- tion as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property or in pro- portion to the amount recovered. Stolen, by means of burglary, from a jeweller's shop in Colchester, on the night of 13th or morning of 14th iust : 30 silver lever and Geneva Watches and 17 gold Geneva Watcher, some scratched ' W. M. D.' near the joint inside the b- ck case, maker's name— De Vail, North Hill, Colchester ; also a quantity of gold Rings, Pins, Brooches, Charms, Seals, Keys, Bracelets, Studs, Albert Chains, Neck Chains, Necklets, Alberts ( various), 5 Sovereigns, & c. Information to be given to Chief Constable Mercer, Borough Police Office, Colchester, Essex.— Bow- street, August 16. Stolen my means of burglary, during the night of 6tli instant, from a dressing- room at Court Lodge, West Farleigh, near Maidstone, the property of J. H. Mercer, Esq. : 1 light brown leather Purse with band, containing .£ 17 in Gold and 2s. 6d. in Silver, and some visiting Cards with Mr. H. Mercer, Court Lodge, West Farleigh, upon them; a gold hunting Watch, white enamel dial, engine- turned case, duplex escape- ment, compensation balance, name James McCabe, Royal Exchange, London, No. 01785, a double crest on the outside of case, and an inscription inside, hair Chain attached with two patent gold' Bramah Keys, and a gold Watch Key with a double seal on a swivel engraved with crests ; a diamond mourning Ring with inscription inside; a gold antiq-- io sardonyx Ring ; a morocco leather jewel Case, containing 1 set of single pearl Studs, 1 carbuncle Do., 1 pearl and enamel Do., 1 jet Do., several single Studs and gold Buttons, a gold Locket with two miniature likenesses inside, painted on ivory, a heavy gold snake. Stolen from a field, at Allscott, during the night of 16tli instant; the property of Mr. Robt. Clarke : a bay mare Pony, aged, about 11 hands high, grey star on forehead, a hole pierced through one ear, and tail cut rather short. In- formation to be given to Chief Superintendent Ivins, Wellington, Salop.— Bow- street, August 23. Absconded from Crewe, Cheshire, charged with stealing a Horse, Trap, and Set of Harness ( all recovered) : a man about 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark Com- plexion and hair, no whiskers, and bl. n-. k moustache ; dressed iu a dark tweed suit and hard felt liat, and of gentlemanly appearance. He- was- traced to Liverpool, where he disposed of the Horse and1 Harness. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Cooper, County Police, Nantvvich, or to Acting Superintendent Morris, Police Station, Crewe, Cheshn- e.— Bow- street, August 21. The Pony and Trap stolen from Northampton on 13 th: instant ( advertised in Police Gazette of 16th instant) have been found, having been sold at Market Harborough on tlie- same day. The thief is still at large, and shortly after- disposing of the Pony and Trap, left by rail for Birmingham. He was then accompanied by a man about 10 years older than himself. Information to be given to Chief Coastable Keenan, Borough Police Office, Northampton.— Bow- street, August 21. Stolen from a field at Sandlin, Leigh, near Worcester, during the night of 12th instant : a light bay Mare, about 15 hands 1 or 2 inches high, aged, white saddlemarks on bake,, light- coloured patch </ n near hind leg above the hock, slivrt rat tail, all the hoofs are broken froiii bad shoeing, newly shod, the shoes are stamped ' E. T.'; the property of Themas Griffiths, junr., Martley. JS! reward will be paid on eOnvic- tion of the offenders and recovery of the Mare. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Ccnstable Checketts, Worcester. 1— Bow- street, August 19. Stolen from out of a field at Donnington, Salop, on the night of 7th instant: a half- bred bay hack Mare, 4, years old, 15 to 16 hands high, in good condition, with white blaze down forshe^ d, inclining a little on one side, off hind fetlock white, both knees slightly broken, one a little mora than the other, and hair grows straight out around it. A man was seen loitering about the neighbourhood at 8 p. m. on same night, 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 itfjhes high ; dressed in a dark brown overcoat, tight- fitting trousers, and hard felt jimcrow hat; carried an ash plant stie- k iii his hand, and had the appearance of a low hor.^ e dealer or groom, was traced going in the direction of Wolverhampton. £ 5 reward will be paid by Mr. Parton, the owner, to any person or persons who will give such information as will lead to the recovery of the Mare, and conviction of th& offender or offenders. Stolen on 13th instant, from Garrett- lane, Tooting : 2 fat Heifers, one red, one red and white. By a man, cattle dealer-, 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in darV mixture suit, ami dark felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, August ISA. Stolen from Molland- commoii, Devon, on 13th instant ; 4 fat Exmoor horn Ewes, marked on each side with ' M.' in pitch, also a redding m; irk between the horns ; the property of Mr. Richard Mogridge, Bowchurch, Mollaud, De- von. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Woody B Division, Devon Constabulary, South Molton.— Bow- strew, August 19. Stolen from a field at Leominster on 10th instant: two Welsh wether Sheep in good condition, long tails, marked with a ' T' on both sides. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Johnson, Borough Police Station, Leominster, Here- fordshire.— Bow- street, August 16. Further particulars respecting Horse and Cart stolen from Tothill- street, Westminster, and advertised iu Police Gazette of 7th instant : Horse's mane and tail whitish colour ; seat in cart has a broad leather strap with iron supports instead of rail. Stolen by a man, 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark and short hair, broken nose; is well known to liorsc dealers, and at fairs.— Metropolitan Police, B Division, Aug. 16. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of PHILIP H. A. BROAD, who left Churchill on 15tli and Bristol on 19th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing .£ 4 10s., a Counterpane, and other Articles ; the property of Mr. James Salisbury, his master : he is about 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, a grocer aud draper's assistant, rather pale complexion, dark hair, whiskers and moustache, shaves under the chin, slightly bald on forehead and crown, aud of smart appearance; dressed in a dark coat and vest, brown mixture trousers, and black stiff bowler hat. Abscended, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: JOHN GALBRAITH, late of No. 13, Ashchurch- terrace, Starch Green, Hammersmith, and late Secretary of the Jarvis Island Silver Mining Company, Ethelburger House, Bishops- gate- street, 55 years of age, 6 feet high, fair complexion, long beard, turning grey ; dressed in dark clothes, gentlemanly appearance, and has a peculiar voice. Information to be given to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.- Bow- street, August 23. Charged with stealing from a dwelling- house at Good- shaw- lane, Higher Booth, about 3' 30 p. m. on 19th instant: a Money Box, 6 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 2\ inches deep, and contained an ancient brass Weight, the size oi; a shilling, and 3- 16ths of an inch thick ; several American small silver Coins ; an English Penny, with silver centre; an English Two- penny Piece; about 40 copper Coins, English and Foreign, the sizes of penny's, half- penny's, and farthings ; two Stones, size of marbles, set all round with small gold nuggets : two men, one about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sandy hair and moustache, slender build; dressed in corduroy trousers, light^ coloured coat, shoes, and cap; the other about 19 years of age, has a youthful appearance, and dark hair ; dressed in dark clothing, shoes, and cap; both appear to be factory operatives, and tramping through the country. Information to be given at the County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— Bow- street, August 21. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Stephen Croggs, at Gorsley, Newent, between 2 and 5 p. m. on 15th instant : a frock Coat and double- breasted Vest, of navy blue twill, bound with black silk; a pair of grey ribbed Trousers ; a suit of black and dark grey check Trousers, newly hemmed round bottoms ; a check woollen Shirt, feather- stitched round wrists and down the front; 2 silk pocket Handkerchiefs, different colours, one marked Stephen Croggs, the other with the initials ' S. C.' in white ; a pair of dark yellow kid Gloves ; 2 black bowler Hats, one round, the other a little flat on top ; a nine- carat gold Ring, small piece broken out of the inside, set with dark spotted stone; a gold plated cuff Stud ; a six ehamber Revolver; 3 silver pencil Cases ; a silver Toothpick ; a - counterfeit five- shilling Piece. By two tramps, one about 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, pale, thin face, and thick upper lip ; the other 17 or 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark eyes and complexion. They are no doubt wearing the stolen clothes, as their own were left behind in the house. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Con- stable Chipp, Police Office, Gloucester. — Bow- street, August 21. Charged with stealing a double barrel breach- loading Gun, recovered ; the property of John Henry Vessey, of Welton- le- Wold : JOHN BURTON, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, scar on- side of his face from a gun wound, which shows bright, supposed dark eyes, dark curly hair, no whiskers or moustache, has a finger off one of his hands, and a plasterer's labourer; dressed in cord trousers, white slop or jacket, white soft billy hat, and had a long blue pilot jacket with him. He is a nativi of London- thorpe, near Grantham, is well known at Kirton in Holland, Boston, Grimsby, and Ripon, Yorkshire. A warrant is granted for his apprehension. Information to be given to Inspector Smith, County Police Station, Louth, Lincolnshire. — Bow- street, August 21. Stolen from a dwelling- house, on 7th instant, at Pedmore, near Stourbridge : a rosewood Work- box, containing a Knife, Pencil- case, and other articles ( all recovered) ; a quantity of Cartes de Visite, views of different Watering Places, a small brass Loek and Key, a small brass reversible Seal, with the name of each day of the week on it. By a tramp about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, clean shaved ; dressed in black cloth jacket, dirty moleskin trousers, coloured muffler, blue striped shirt, and black soft billycock hat. Stated he was a nailmafeer. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Wheeler, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, August 21. Absconded, charged on a warrant with embezzlement : ROBERT REEKS, a clerk, late of No. 4, Hanover- square, Kennington, 38 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, reddish brown whiskers, beard, and moustache, grey eyes, heavy eyebrows, right shoulder sloping, hands very hairy ; dressed in serge jacket and vest, light grey trousers, and high hat. Information to be given to Inspector Mc William, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry.— Bow- street, August 19. Absconded from Kidderminster on 12th instant charged with larceny; EMILY WILLIAMS, native of Brimfield Wyson near Hereford .; she is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, light brown hair, rather large prominent teeth, and of ladylike appearance. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Haigh, Town Hall, Kidderminster, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street, August 19. Absconded on 3rd instant, from Horsham, charged on a warrant with larceny aa bailee of several Watches : HENRY HASLETT ANDERSON, a tramping watch and clock cleaner, 28 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fair com- plexion, grey eyes, and light hair ; dressed in a tweed coat and trousers, very much worn at the bottom of the legs, side- epring boots down at heel, and carries a sehool- bjy's bag over his shoulder; he is married, has three children, who are supposed to be with. him. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Henderson, West Sussex Constabulary, Horsham.— Bow- street, August 19. Stolen from a dwelling- house at southcliff, near Market Weighton, on 17th instant: a brown elotii Top- coat, with In- own velvet collar, lined with brown satinet, brown twist buttons, two pockets outside ; a black cloth shooting Jacket, two outside and one inside pocket, one button on the top, machine stitched inside with blue cotton .; a black cloth Vest; a pair of patent fustian Trousers, blue and black stripes, broad black stripe down outside ; a fustian Jacket, lined with, black a « d white woollen plaid ;• two unbleached cotton Shirts; a black silk Neckerchief; two pairs of hand knit worsted Stockings. Supposed by a man about 5 feet 7 or 8 isa. high, middle age, fresh complexion, red hair and whiskers, propor- tionate figure ; dressed in black raddy hat, dark cloth or twepd suit, the trousers rather lighter colour than the eeat. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Wood, Pock- lington, or to Inspector Cusworth, East Riding Constabulary, Market Weighton, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, August 19. Stolen from the Beckford Inn public- house, between 1 £ nd 7 p. m., on 12th instant : a bine waterproof carriage Rug, the property of the Rev. W. D. Stanton, of Toddington, by a tramping navvy, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, pale complexion, light sandy hair, small light whiskers, imd » car on left cheek ; dressed in old jioiciw hat, fastaaa vest aad trousers, split at the bottom, and old navvy boots, aad without a coat. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Day, Constabulary Office, Cheltenham, or to Sergeant Whitman, Beckford, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, August 19. Description of SARAH ELIZABETH OVEREND, name may be false, charged on a warrant with stealing a quantity of wearing Apparel, and a small sum of Money at Stafford, on 30th ultimo : she is 12 years of age, 4 feet 5 or 6 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, dark eyes, and speaks with the East Lancashire accent; dressed in light alpaca frock, with frilled tunic, black straw hat, and buttoned boots. She stated that her friends lived at 29, Maude- street, Manchester, which is false, and that she had come on a visit to a friend at Stafford, whose address she had lost. She has been traced to Oldham, Lancashire. Information to be given to Inspector Chaplain, Stafford.— Bow street, August ] 9. Stolen, by means of burglary, from the house df Luke Bradshaw, Newbold Moor, on 12th instant : about £ 2 in Silver, £ 2 in Copper, a piece of Mutton, and a shank end of a Ham. By JOSHUA SIMMONS, a collier, 47 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair, grey eyes, swarthy complexion, clean shaved, cut mark under left eye and on nose, high cheek bones, and sunken eyes.
