Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be maae and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that information should be made and swom to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. A « no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, al! Letters addressed to the Editor SUUSt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 13tli instant, the Dead Body of a newly- born female - Child was found in the Birmingham Canal, at Priestfield, Bilston, packed in one of Hudson's dry soap boxes, wrapped in part of the ' Standard' newspaper, dated 14th September, 1871, and a piece of oilcloth wrapped round the box. An in- quest has been held on the body and verdict of ' Found dead in canal,' returned. Any information respecting the birth, or the person or persons who placed the body there, to be given to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Bilston, or at any Police Station in Stafford.— Bow- st., August 16. FORGERY. Description of JAMES or JIM MATTHEWS, a well known horse coper, who gives his address as the New Inn, East- street, Bedminster, Bristol, remanded until 14th instant, « n a charge of forgery on Messrs. Stuckey's Banking Company, at Wells, Somerset : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, rather sallow complexion, small whiskers, blue eyes, walks upright; dressed in a tig'. t- fitting dark plaid « uit, and bowler hat; he was accompanied by another man who sent an errand boy from the Mitre Hotel with the forged cheque for £ 60, and thus obtained payment: he gives the name of JOHN ADOLPHUS JOHNSON, alias RICHARD JOHNSON, or DICK JOHNSON, and his address as 17, Ash- grove, Hackney, London. He is about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, rather thin features, prominent nose, heavy eyebrows, fresh complexion, long curly hair and moustache, turning a little grey, side of face shaved, and has recently shaved the beard off his chin ; dressed in grey mixture cloth coat and vest, old black cloth trousers, and black stiff bowler hat; rather respectable appearance, more like a clerk than otherwise. Stolen from the person on the up platform of the North Kent Bailway Station, Gravesend, on 5th instant: an open face gold lever Watch, by ' Burrand and Lund, No. 8223,' on the dial. Stolt n from the person at Lewes Races, on 9th and 10th instant: a silver Geneva Watch, single case, movement hand, white face, a black jet Chain attached ; a silver English lever stop Watch, maker Sheppard, Lewes, movement hand very heavy according to size; a gold hunter Watch, pair- case, with small opening in front to show the time, initials ' J. J. R.' on back, maker Benson, Ludgate Hill; an opera Glass, black cover, two small rings at focus part for suspending, imitation gold facings. Also stolen from a carriage on the race course, on the 9th instant: a new light grey Coat, white Pocket- handkerchief in pocket, with the initials ' E. B.' marked on one corner. Stolen from the person on 1st instant : a gold lever Watch, single cased, with white dial, gold hands, and black • chapters; an Albert Chain, with Shield and inscription— ' Won by R. Patterson, A Battery, 1877,' attached. No. 7539, maker's name, James Hay, Leith. Also on 1st instant: a gentleman's gold hunting duplex " Watch, with white dial and plain cases; an Albert Chain, curb pattern, attached. No. 5877, maker's name Grimalde and Johnston, Strand, London. _ On 2nd instant : a silver lever Watch, single cased, white dial wold hands, black chapters, plain cases, German make, No' 54900, maker's name Theodore Thompson, Dumfries. On 1st instant : an old- fashioned gold Watch, white dial, one of the hands a little bent. The silver lever Geneva Watch, stolen in Middlesbrough on 5th instant, was offered for sale next day at West Hartle- pool by a man, who on being questioned ran away, leaving the Watch behind him. Stolen, by means of burglary, from a jeweller's shop in Colchester, on the night of 13th or morning of 14th inst : 30 silver lever and Geneva Watehes and 17 gold Geneva Watches, some scratched ' W. M. D.' near the jointr inside the b- ck case, maker's name— De Vail, North Hill, Colchester ; also a quantity of gold Rings, Pins, Brooches, Charms, Seals, Keys, Bracelets, Studs, Albert Chains, Neck Chains, Necklets, Alberts ( various), 5 Sovereigns, & c. Information to be given to Chief Constable Mercer, Borough Police Office, Colchester, Essex.— Bow- street, August 16. Stolen my means of burglary, during the night of 6th instant, from a dressing- room at Court Lodge, West Farleigh, near Maidstone, the property of J. H. Mercer, Esq. : 1 light brown leather Purse with band, containing £ 17 in Gold and 2s. 6d. in Silver, and some visiting Cards with Mr. H. Mercer, Court Lodge, West Farleigh, upon them; a gold hunting Watch, white enamel dial, engine- turned case, duplex escape- ment, compensation balance, name James McCabe, Royal Exchange, London, No. 01785, a double crest on the outside of case, and an inscription inside, hair Chain attached with two patent gold Bramah Keys, and a gold Watch Key with a double seal on a swivel engraved with crests ; a diamond mourning Ring with inscription inside; a gold antique sardonyx Ring ; a morocco leather jewel Case, containing 1 set of single pearl Studs, 1 carbuncle Do., 1 pearl and enamel Do., 1 jet Do., several single Studs and gold Buttons, a gold Locket with two miniature likenesses inside, painted on ivory, a heavy gold snake Chain w| th ornaments attached, also several other Lockets, & c. £ 20 reward will be paid by Mr. Mercer to any person who will give such information as will lead to a conviction of the thief or thieves. Stolen from a jeweller's shop in Brighton, during the of 9th instant : a quantity of Watches and Jewellery, consisting of Rings, Lockets, Ear- rings, Brooches, Pins, Chains, & c. Three men of the following description were seen loitering about the premises on the evening previous to the robbery : one 26 to 28 years of age, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, dark moustache, no whiskers, high cheek bones, slightly made ; dressed in light tweed vest and trousers, dark coat, hard felt hat; another about 36 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather stoutly made, fair complexion, round face, slight fair moustache, cut short, no whiskers ; dressed in dark tweed coat, and hard felt hat; the other is about 22 or 23 years of ago, short, very slightly made, little or no hair on face, fair complexion ; dressed in pepper and salt jacket, hard felt hat. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 8th instant, at Park- gate, near Bromsgrove : a silver verge Watch, capped, bow broken off, small piece of German silver chain tied to stud with thread; a gold wedding Ring, not much worn, and 12s. 6d. in Silver ; a black pilot cloth monkey Jacket, double- breasted, side pockets, pocket inside left breast, row of black bone buttons on each side, at> d red and mauve plaid lining ; a dark grey cloth vest, no collar, black bone buttons, watch pocket on left side, and black back ; a brown mixture tweed vest, no collar, black bone buttons, watch pocket left side, and slate coloured back ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, lined with calico ; two coloured cotton Shirts, white, red and blue plaid ( one shirt recovered) ; two Turkey red cotton Handker- chiefs with white spots, and a pair of men's laceup Boots, with brass eyelets and sprigged bottoms, recently sslcd; all the clothing about half worn ; by a tramp, who left behind him an old jacket and a pair of clogs ; he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, much sunburnt, brown hair, small brown whiskers ; when seen was wearing the stolen jacket and boots, and an old soft billy hat. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent Tyler, Police Office, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. Bow- street, August 14. Stolen by means of burglary from the dwelling house of W. Farren, Huntingdon road, near Cambridge, on 10th inst., 2 pairs of Oxonian Shoes, § one pair nearly new, the, other pair new soled aBd toecapped. and a bottle of Whisky ; supposed HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Leominster on lOt- h instant: two Welsh wether Sheep in good condition, long tails, marked with a ' T' on both sides. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Johnson, Borough Police Station, Leominster, Here- fordshire.— Bow- street, August 16. Found, supposed stolen, at Watford, a rusty grey Horse Cob, with white face, heels white behind, tail cut square with hocks, no shoes on, apparently about 3 years old, 13 hands high. Information to be given to Inspector Chapman, Police ' Station, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, August 16. Description of a man who at 10 a. m. on 23rd ultimo hired a Pony and Trap from Mr. Thomas Puttnam, of North- ampton, promising to return it at 1 p. m. on the same day, but has failed to do so, and a warrant has been issued for his apprehension. He is about 24 years of age, 5 ft. 6 ins. high, fair complexion, and slight moustache ; dressed in light grey suit of clothes, and is of smart appearance. The Pony is a roan Mare, about 13 hands high, sore from kick on off shoulder, and is a fast trotter. The Trip is painted dark blue, picked out with blue of a lighter colour, a blue moveable Cushion, and the iron of one of the splash boards is broken. The Harness is black, brass mounted, wUh a rush collar, a little worn. Information to be given to Chief Constable Keenan, Borough Police Office, Northampton.— Bow- street, August 16. Further particulars respecting Horse and Cart stolen from Tothill- street, Westminster, and advertised iu Police Gazette of 7th instant : Horse's mane and tail whitish colour ; seat in CP, rt h \ S a broad leather strap with iron supports instead of rail. Stolen by a man, 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark and short hair, broken nose; is well known to horse dealers, and at fairs.— Metropolitan Police, B Division, Aug. 16. Stolen from out of a field at Dunnington, Salop, on the night of 7th instant: a dark brown Mare, 4 years old, 15 to 16 hands high, white blaze down forehead, white off hind fet- lock, tail cut short, and broken knees ; the property of Mr. Benjamin Parton. A man was seen loitering about the neighbourhood at 8 p. m. on same night, 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high ; dressed in a dark brown overcoat, tight- fitting trousers, and hard felt jimcrow hat; carried an ash plant stick in his hand, and had the appearance of a low horse dealer or groom, was traced going iu the direction of Wolverhampton. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Howells, County Police, Shrewsbury, Salop.— Bow- street, August 14. Stolen from a meadow at Rodbourne- lane, Swindon, between 8 a. m. on 11th, and 11a. m. on 12th instant, the property of Mr. John Forward, farmer : 2 grazing Cows, one milk white, ab ® ut 6 years old, has one of the behind quarters of the udder swollen ; the other red colour, about 3 years old, her horns curl inwards over the forehead. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent North, Wilts Constabulary, Swindon.— Bow- street, August 14. During the afternoon of 8th instant, a man obtained a Pony and Trap, by means of false pretences, from Mr. G. Barnes, Sheffield : he is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light hair, small light moustache^ and small tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in a dark check, suit, and hard felt hat ; the animal is a dark brown horse Pony, aged," 13 hands high, white mark under the saddle, 2 white marks on off side, has a bit out of one ear, and both knees broken ; the Trap is a small one, painted dark colour outside, picked out with straw colour, white ^ inside, and dark blue cushions ; the Harness is silver plated, and is nearly new. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Central Police Office, Sheffield. — Bow- street, August 14. Stolen on 9th instant, from Hill Farm, Kingsbury : a bay Gelding, 15 hands 3 inches high, near hind fetlock and face white, recently blistered on fore legs, iu good condition. Metropolitan Police, X Division, August 12. Stolen from a field at Hawkster : a chestnut horse Pony, aged, about 12 hands high, has a white star on forehead, long mane and tail, both knees has been broken but are healed up. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby, ' Yorkshire. — Bow- street, August 12. Stolen from Asilcy, Salsp, on 21st ultimo : 22 wethers and Ewes ( lambs), tails cut and unshorn ; the property of Mr. William Adams, of Astley. £ 5 reward* will be given on apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from a fieli at Silverdale, during the night of 2nd instant: a bright bay Irish Mare, 3 years old, 15 hands hio- h, white star on forehead, dark points, a scar on near foreleg, ii- fair condition, shod all round and the shoes stamped ' W. Fenton' ; the property of Henry Sutton. Sup > osed by DAVID JONES, alias MILTON, 28 years of age^ S ft. 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair and complexion, full face an 1 freckley, no whiskers, and stout build ; dressed in blue piloi suit, and 2 round black Tommy hat; lie is a collier, and resided at •' Scot Hay. £ 5 reward will be given for the recovery of the Mare and conviction of the thief. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Harston, Tunstall, Staffordshire.— Bow- Sireet, August 12. r Found at Scropton, on 24th ultimo : STed and - white Cow, about 5 years old, gives a quart- of milk a day. Sup- posed in Calf, and of mixed breed. Information to be given to Inspector Hollinsworth, Constabulary Station, Church Broughton, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, August 12. Absconded, charged with stealing a Mare on 22 » d ultimo from a field at Heaton, recovered. A man about 18 years of age, 5 feet high, fresh complexion ; dressed in old dark fustian clothes, dark cap and shoes ; he said his father was a carrier living in Linder- street, Bury, named John Lomax, which has been found to be false. He sold the Mare in Blackburn on 24th ultimo, another man stood by, to whom he referred and who it is thought must be implicated : he is about 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh com- plexion and good looking ; dressed in a suit of blue or black clothes, black billycock hat, and had the appearance of a farmer ; he also stated he came from Bury, and that he knew the above descril el person and also his father. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Holland, Boltoa. — Bow- street, August 12. Stolen from a field at Liddington, on the night of 10th instant: a bay cob Horse, 5 years old, 15 hands high, white face, and one white hind leg, has a wart underneath belly and on sheath, quiet to ride and drive. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Rutland, Oakham, or to Mr. Super- intendent Murfitt, Police Station, Uppingham, Rutland.— Bow- street, August 12. Remanded at Lambeth Polioe Court until 11 a. m. on 14th instant, charged with the unlawful possession of a Horse and Cart: ALFRED WILLIAM SMITH, 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, whiskers and moustache, and shaved chin ; dress and appearance respectable : a brown cob gelding Horse, 14 hands high, 6 years old, chapped shoulder and under brisket; Pony Cart, painted dark blue, picked out red, imitation cane sides, lined with oilcloth, red wheels, picked out with black, and plated Harness.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, August 12. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen between 6tli and 7th instant, from a dwelling- house in Appleby : two £ 5 Notes, £ 5 in Gold, 5s. in Silver, and 2 Purses ; one of the Notes was of Messrs. Wakefield and Co.' s Kendal Bank, No. 616; one of the Purses is of black leather and clasp, which is broken ; the other is an old yellow leather Purse with band, which is broken. Bv JAMES WRIGHT, alias WATSON, alias MILLICAN and BORRO- DALE ; he belongs to Shildon, Durham, where he has been convicted of larceny. A warrant issued for his arrest. He is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, a mason or brickla? er, fresh complexion, dark hair and small dark brown moustache ; dressed when he left Appleby in a light grey coat, old and faded, dark vest, grey trousers, black hard felt hat ( old and dirty), and elastic side boots. He was accom- panied by his wife, Isabella Wright, alias Smith and Bolace, a native of Shildon, Durham, about 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, and fair hair and complexion ; dressed in dark red stuff dress, black jacket, and black straw hattrimmed with muslin. She had a box with her, which is covered with light paper. The two were traced to Darlington on 8th instant. Information, to be given to Mr. Superintendent Spencer, Appleby, Westmor- land, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, August 16. Charged on a warrant with stealing £ 210 : ALEXD. ROBINSON, late of 36, Throgmorton Street, and 4, Great Queen- street, Westminster, and 19, Great George- street, West- minster, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, heavy light moustach<, respectable appearance. Inforaiat ion to be given to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry— Bow- street, August i 6. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Whitchurch, Salop, on 13th instant: a gold diamond and ruby Ring, four diamonds and place for fifth, and two rubies ; a gold Ring, white and blue stones ; a gold Ring, Irish diamonds, two rows and five in each row ; a gold Locket, large size ; a gold Brooch; an*, a pair of gold Ear- rings. By WILLIAM PICKIN, a farm labourer, 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, ruddy com- plexion, high cheek bones, dark hair, and whiskers round the chin, and a native of Marchamley, Salop ; dressed in cord or moleskin jacket and trousers, soft felt hat, and watertight boots. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Haines, or to Sergeant Lear, " Whitchurch, Salop, who holds the warrant.— Bow- st., August 16. Absconded from Cirencester, on 12th instant, charged with embezzlement : WILLIAM CHILTON, late one of the relieving officeis of the Cirencester Union, 30 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, stout build, rather corpulent, dark eyes, black hair, whiskers, and moustache, shaved clean under chin, sallow complexion, and fast walking; dressed when he left in black hard bowler hat, dark grey large plaid jacket and vest, speckled trousers with black stripe down the sides, and elastic- side boots ; is a native of Tenbury, Worcestershire. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Wood, Con- stabulary Office, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.—- Bow- street, August 16. NEAKLEY, charged with embezzlement, and advertised in Police Gazette of 2nd instant: should be HENRY GEORGE WEAKLEY, late secretary to the midnight movement, 8|, Red Lion- square, 43 years of age, 6 feet high, military appearance, round- shoulders, small moustache, light hair, grey eves ; dressed iu light tweed suit. Lately resided at 57, Moray- road, Tollington- park. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, G Division, August 16. Stolen on 13th instant between 3 and 4 p. m. from the building of Mr. Edwards Eye, a dark mixture jand pepper and sait monkey Jacket, nearly new, double breasted, two rows of black horn buttons, a little open on each hip, two out- side pockets one inside breast pocket, a red and white pocket Handkerchief, and a leather Lace in pocket. Stolen from a stable at Loughton, on the morning of 9th instant: a Set of silver- mounted gig Harness ( recovered), sold at Northampton the following day. By RICH. May probably apply ffor work on the new line of rail- way between Northampton and Rugby, or at any public works. Information to be given to Inspector Webb, Police Station, Stony' Stratford, Buckinghamshire, who holds a war- rant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 14. Stolen from the pocket of a lodger, at a beerhouse at Benwick, during the night ef 7th instant: a common leather Purse, which fastens with a button, and contained £ 2, in Gold, a Florin, and two small Keys. Supposed by a fellow lodger, a tramping carpenter, who had been working a day or two at his trade in the viiliage, and absconded on the morning of 8th instant, about 40 or 45 years of age, about 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark hair and moustache, little or no whiskers, very dark complexion, large cheek bones, and rather thick lips ; dressed in old brown coat, old dark vest and cap, drabbet trousers recently washed, some paint on them, or an old pair of cord trousers, very much patched, very old lace- up boots, cut about the fronts, he may now have new ones ; supposed to be a native of King's Lynn. Remanded at Chesterton Gaol until 17th and 26th inst., on a charge of felony : HENRY REACH, a cabinetmaker, of Bury St. Edmunds, 56 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high., auburn hair, and sandy whiskers and moustache ; dressed in black cloth frock coat, vest, and trousers much worn, and very rusty old lace- up boots, the uppers cut in the front, and black hat. Had in his possession a pawnticket of a pair of boots, pledged at Robert Abrahams and Sons, 49, Kettering- road, Northampton, on 27tli March, 1878, for 2s. 6d., in the name- of Mary Ann Reach. He had a woman traveling with him, and two children, a girl and a boy. And SIMON CUTH- BERT, a shoemaker, late of Chelsea, his proper name is supposed to be SAMUEL CURRY, of Bury St. Edmunds, 42 years of age, 5 feet 8£ inches high, dark hair and whiskers turning grey, and dark brown moustache, and bald on top of head; dressed in a blue serge coat, double- breasted black cloth vest, brown stripe tweed trousers, blucher boots, and black felt hat, broken at the crown. States he was born at Ilsley, and has been working at Manchester, Colchester, and Northampton. He had a quantity of shoemaker's tools in his possession when apprehended. Description of HENRY GEORGE GOODFELLOW, who left his home at Old Castle- road, near Salisbury, on • 24th July last: 13 years of age. 4 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, light brown hair, has a small wart on centre of forehead ; when he left he was dressed in plaid cloth trousers,, bjue pilot cloth jacket, with velvet collar, hard bowler hat; took other clothes with him in a light- coloured carpet bag.
