C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all { Letters addressed to the Editor insist foe prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should bo forwarded On War Office Forms 83 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in tho POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MUEDES AID WOUNDING. Absconded on the morning of 9th instant, charged with stabbing Michael Brian, in Dock- street, Newport, at 11 p. m., on 8th instant : THOMAS JACKSON, a labourer, 21 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slightly built, dark liair, slight dark moustache, no whiskers, dark complexion, thin featured, and slightly pockmarked ; dressed in dark coat and vest, moleskin trousers, and soft bowler hat. Has been to sea and may try to ship again in some port, had lio money when he left, and belongs to Newport. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Newport, Monmouthshire.— Bow- street, March 11. in several places. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Boic- street, March 11. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 1 and 5 p. m. on 6 th instant, the property of Emanuel Ridgeway, of Broughton, labourer : a black cloth shooting Coat, small diamond pattern, two pockets outside, one inside left breast ; a double- breasted grey cloth Yest ; Trousers to match, with fly fronts ; a brown cloth Coat, two pockets outside, one inside left breast; a grey cloth Yest; Trousers to match, and darned at the right knee ; a pair of brown Stockings, all men's size ; a silver albert Guard, snake- pattern, small oval gold Locket attached; a small black Shawl, with black and white border ; a small light Shawl, with dark border. Supposed by two men who were seen near the house about the time of the robbery : one from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, rather dark complexion, thin face, brown hair, cut short; dressed in brown coat, moleskin trousers, dark cap. The other from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, brown hair, full face, grey sunken eyes ; dressed in moleskin trousers, soft billycock hat, slop, and strong boots. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Simpson, North Riding Constabulary Office, South Stockton, oi' to Acting Inspector Severs, Police Station, Stokesley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 11. During the night of 3rd instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. William Smith, Johnstonc- strett, Handsworth, was broken into and stolen therein : a man's pepper- and- salt Coat, double- breasted, two outside pockets and ticket pocket, about half worn ; and a pair of man's Braces. By a man of the following description : about 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark complexion and hair, medium build, full face, high cheek bones, no whiskers and was heard to speak with Irish accent; dressed in brown- coloured plaid cloth trousers, low shoes, and. white stockings. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Woollaston, West Brom- wich, or to Inspector Whitehurst, Police Station, Handsworth, near Birmingham!— Bow- street,' March 6. Mill, Stroud. The Mare was found in a field at Eyeford, near Stow- on- the- Wold, about 24 miles from Stroud, on the morning' of 28th ultimo. When found she had been clipped, docked and seared, her mane thinned and newly shod. The fore shoes are quite flat without any grooves for the nails, the hind shoes are turned up a little on the outside. The Mare is supposed to have been docked and seared where she was shod. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person or persons giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons who stole the Mare. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hanbidge, Stroud, Gloucester- shire.— Bow- street, March 6. Charged on a sheriffs warrant for having on several occasions between 1st March and 9th May, 1877, fraudulently obtained on presentation of forged bills, in a Bank in Glasgow, several sums of money, amounting to £ 383 9s. 6d, : WM. DOIG, a working jeweller, of No. 8, Buchanan- street, Glasgow, 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark hair, dark complexion, heavy eyebrows, downcast look, old scar on nose, no whiskers, slight black beard, and very slight moustache ; dressed generally in an olive coloured top coat, rough brown tweed suit, black scarf, and a black felt hat. When walking generally keeps one hand in trousers pocket, and seldom looks auy person in the face. Absconded on 27th ultimo. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable McCall, Central Police Chambers, Glasgow.— Bow- street, March 0. KOBBEEY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Description of HENRY SMITH, charged with highway robbery with violence, at Kendal, on 2nd instant : 18 years of age ( looks older), 5 feet 5£ inches high, fresli complexion, blue eyes, broton hair, slight moustache, and mole on left shoulder; dressed in new black cloth jacket, white cord vest, white cotton cord trousers, mended at the knees, pair of new elastic- side boots, and Scotch cap. He is a native of Lazonby, Cumberland, and deserted from the 55th Regiment, at Car- lisle, on 28th ultimo. He and two other men and two women, who committed the robbery, were traced to Manchester, where the other four were apprehended. Stolen on 19tli instant, from the person whilst in a crowd in Euston- road : a large open- face gold chronometer Watch, No. 55104.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, February 27. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Description of a man in custody at Oswestry, on two charges of housebreaking : he gave his name WILLIAM JONES, 60 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair and whiskers round his face, sickly looking, and stoops in the shoulders ; says he is a sailor, but has been tramping the country for the last 18 months. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, March 11. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Michael Peatman, of Fetchill Moor, parish of Ellesmere, by means of house- breaking, about 2 p. m. on 5th instant : a pair of light coloured grey cloth Trousers, fly fronts, pockets in front, and ribbed down the side of each leg, made small in legs, suitable for a groom. Supposed by a tramp, about 5 feet 7 inches liigli, middle age, thin face, dark complexion and whiskers, and has the appearance of a German sailor, walked with a stick, and turned one foot out; dressed in blue cloth cheesecutter cap, dark blue or black round jacket, old blue trousers, torn » E AID CATTLE STEALING. Further information respecting the Sheep stolen from a field at Shelvock, on the flight of 1st instant : ££ 0 reward will be given to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension of the offender or cffcuders. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop;-- Bow- street, March 11. A. man of the following description hired a brown Mare, 15 hands high, about 10 years old, near hind fetlock white, both knees slightly marked, tail cut square ; a brown White* chapel Drag, picked out with vermilion, blue cushions and tufts, ' Thomas Barnes, Builder, Chester,' oil caps ; and a silver plated Harness, at Chester, on 25th ultimo, and has not since been heard of : he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark beard and moustache; dressed in dark blue overcoat, and silk hat. A reward of £ 2 will be paid by the owner to any person who shall give such information as shall lead to the recovery of the property and conviction of the offender. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, March 8. Description of a man, charged., with . stealing 5 Sheep, at Nortlileach, on ,25th ultimo ( sheep since recovered sold in Oxford Market* : he is 21 years of a, go, 5 feet 4 inches high ; dressed in a long dark overcoat, dark trousers, hard felt hat, and old boots, the left split at heel. He gave the name of CHARLES WOODCOCK. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Philpott. Police Office, Northleacii, Gloucester- shire.— Bow- street, March 8. Stolen during the night of 27th ultimo, from a stable at the ' Drill' inn, Cheam- lane, North Cheam : a grey mare Pony, aged, 13J hands high, chipped knees, in good condition; a set of brass- mounted Harness, with two odd tcrrels, traces, bridle, old pads, lined white check. Also stolen from the farm at Cheam- lane, same night: a dark green Dogcart, with two lamps, top of one broken off, cushions covered dark blue cloth, a cocoa- nut Mat, a Sack, ' Charles Dixon, Cheam'on side, all much worn.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, Mar. 0. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Walsall: a bay horse Colt, 3 years old, 14 hands high, and in good condition. Stolen from a field at Shelvock, parish of Ruyton Eleven Towns, on the night , of 1st instant : 3 Shropshire downs yearling Sheep, marked with pitch on the side ' B. O.' Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, March 6. Stolen between 10 p. m. on 1st, and 8 a. m, on 2ndinstant, from stables at Sudbury Lodge Farm, Sudbury- road, Harrow; a chesnut Mare, aged, 14 bauds 3 inches high, star oil fore head, and hind heel white, small lump on off fore fetlock, in good condition ; a set of brass mounted Harness, collar and bridle deficient; and two brown horse Rugs, old, ' Urite, maker, Paddington' thereon.— Metropolitan Police, X Divi sion, March 6. Stolen from a field at Bowbridge, in the parish of Stroud, sometime between. 23rd and 24th instant: a dark bay Mare, about 14 hands high, rising 5 years, long rough coat, having laid out all the winter, heavy mane and long tail, in good condition, shod all round, and no white spot or mark about her ; the property cf Mr. James R. Ockford, of Little LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of PATRICK DAGNAN, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 6 10s in Gold, 10s. in Silver, and a blue pilot cloth monkey Jacket : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, full face, no whiskers, slight moustache, dark brown hair, cut short, rather crooked nosa, walks erect, having been in the army ; dressed in a newish pilot. cloth jacket, double- breasted, moleskin trousers, soft billycock hat, and strong lacs- up boots, nearly new. Has, relatives at or near Wigan, and the Old Swan, near Liverpool. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Egerton, Coiuity Hall, Birkenhead, or to Inspector Hindley, Police Station, Egrc- mont, Cheshire.— Bow- street, March 11. WILLIAM COMER, of South Molton, advertisod ia Police Gazette of 31st January, 1876,011 a charge of felony, has not been apprehended yet. This man is now supposed to be tramping' the West of England, and robbing his lodging;,. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Wood, B Division, Devon Constabulary, South Molton.— Bow- street, March 11. Absconded, cha. iged on a warrant with embezzling £ 140: Paymaster Sergeant SAMSON WILLS, late of 21st Hussars, 27 years of age ( looks younger), 5 feet ej inches high, fresh completion, brown hair, grey eyes, scar right, breast and trade a clerk, was born at Arrow, Clare, Ireland^ dressed iii Oxford tweed suit. He left Shorncliffe Camp during the night of 5th instant. It is believed he will endeavour to leave the country, most likely for America. His father resides at 6, Twiss- street, Toxtetb- park, Liverpool. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Maxted, Kent County Constabulary. Sandgate.— Bow- street, March II. Absconded on 4th instant, from Whittington, near Lichfield, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 3 in gold from his lodgings : WILLIAM BRAMWELL, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, slight build, has lost his right leg, and wears a wooden one, and generally carries his hand on the top of it, he walks very lame ; dressed in drab slop, cord trousers and vest, and billycock hat. He was convicted at Uttoxeter for stealing a Scythe, and also at Stafford for horse stealing in 1876. Information to be given to Sergeant Hammond, Shenstone, near Lichfield, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 11. Absconded from Sheffield, charged on a warrant with embezzlement : GEORGE TILLERY, a clerk, 38 years of , ge, 5 feet 11 inches high, sallow complexion, . dark hair aud eyes, slight dark whiskers, heavy moustache, - rather round shouldered, stoops when walking, and walks with a quick step; was dressed in dark clothing and felt hat. He absconded on 4th instant, and it is believed he will endeavour to leave the country. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Sheffield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 11. Absconded on lGth ultimo,' from Brewery- road, York- road, Islington, embezzling £<&•: a woman, governess, about 7 years of age, short, stout build, fresh complexion, brown hair ; dressed respectable ; lately resided at 26, Addingtoii- road, Bow.' — Metropolitan Police, E Division, March 8. Absconded on 5th instant, from 11, East- street, Lambs Conduit- street, stealing : a black cloth dress Coat ; a black cloth frock ditto ; a, dark blue morning ditto ; two black cloth Vests ; a dark blue ditto ; a portrait Album, brass back, containing portraits ; and a red morocco leather Cigar- case : a man, 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark com- plexion, hair, whiskers, and. moustache, high forehead, wears double - eye- glasses occasionally ; dressed in dark rough over- coat, dark trousers and vest, high black hat,- and side- spring boots.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, March 8. Absconded on 5th instant, stealing £ 120, viz. : a £ 50 Bank of England Note, No. 0G60C, a "£ 20, No. 05667, the remainder Gold : a man ( clerk), 18 years of age, 5 feet 7 ins. high, fair, pale complexion, blue eyes ; dressed in grey suit, aud black felt h& i.— rMetropolitan Police, E Division, March 8. Description of JOHN LEAKE, charged with stealing on 4tli instant, from the Royal Oak Hotel yard, Eccleshall : a brass wheel Cap, and a Linchpin ; the property of Thomas Roe. He is 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, freckled face, light brown curly hair, and no beard or moustache ; was dressed in a grey suit of clothes, black soft samy hat, lace- up boots ; is a wheelwright, and a rative of Garmelon, near Eccleshall. Was last seen going in the direction of Newport. Information to be givou to Mr. Superintendent Crisp, Stone, or to Sergeant Hall, Eccleshall, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street., March 8. Absconded on 2nd instant, from 12, Alfred- place, St. Giles, stealing one Sovereign : a woman ( servant), 30 years of 2 March 11 a"- e, 5 feet high, ruddy complexion, dark hair ; dressed 111 brown linsey dress, black ant! white check shawl, and black bonnet.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, March 6. Absconded on 26th ultimo, from Birmingham, charged on a warrant with embezzling the sum of £ 300, the monies of J R Atkins and Co., factors, Augusta- street: JAMES ROWLAND ATKINS, one of the Firm, 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, black curly hair, dark moustache and whiskers, and of gentlemanly appearance. lie is well known in Liverpool, Manchester, and many other large towns in England. Information to be given to Major Bond, Chief of Police, Birmingham, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, March 6. Description of GEORGE THOMAS, alias THOMP- SON, alias ROBINSON, an engraver on glass, who absconded from Worcester on 20th ultimo, and for whose arrest a warrant has been issued, charged with stealing a lady's gold Geneva Watch, No. 20499, with gold face, black figures, one of which is partly obliterated ; an old- fashioned long gold Chain ; a gentleman's gold Ring, with pink stone ; a ladies silver Ring, with six green stones ; a small gold Seal; and a small gold Brooch, set with cornelian, which is slightly damaged : he is about 19 years of age, 5 feet U inches high fair complexion, light hair inclined to curl, and small eyes ; dressed in pepper and salt plaid trousers, and dark coat. Is a native of Stourbridge. Information to be given to Sergeant Sommers, City Police, Worcester.— Bow- street, March 0. Description of PETER DENNIS, charged on a warrant with stealing five Sovereigns, in Cambridge, on 2nd instant : 23 years of age, 5 feet high, fresh complexion, dark hair, eyes, and whiskers ; dressed in old dark cap, with peak and knot on top, old light spotted muffler, dark brown mixture cloth coat and vest, cord trousers, lace- up shoes, and an old unbleached calico shirt, stained with blood. He is a drover, and has worked at Norwich, Ipswich, Bury and other places m the Eastern Counties. Information to lie given to Chief Superin- tendent Tun- all, Cambridge, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March G. Stolen on 1st instant, from 10, Angel- court, Strand: a pair side- spring boots ; a pair lace ditto ; two pairs dark tweed Trousers ; a black cloth Overcoat, black velvet collar, pockets on hips ; two black cloth walking Coats; an otter skin Vest; two black cloth Vests, one single, one double- breasted. By two men, one 17 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, dark hair, and thin face ; dressed in a light tweed coat, black trousers, and black felt liat. The other 17 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, thin face, fail- complexion, and dark hair ; dressed in dark clothes, and black soft felt hat. — Metropolitan Police, E Division, March 0. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described.) GEORGE SHAW, alias JOHN ADAMS and GIPSY GEORGE, advertised in the Police Gazette of 22nd ultimo, has been arrested.— Boio- sireit, March 11. Absccn led, charged on a warrant with felony : JOHN HERBERT SARGENT, late of 9, Windermere- road, Upper Holloway; 26, Milton- street, Brixton; and Park road, Clapham ; about 29 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, sandy hair, curls round his head, sandy beard; whiskers and moustache, thin face, and slender build; late a clerk in Christ's Hospital; has a wife and two children, frequents billiard- rooms, and may have taken a marker's situation. Information to be given to Inspector McWilliams, City of London Police, Detective Department, 20, Old Jewry, London.— Bow- street, March 6. sentenced to 1 calendar [ month hard labour, at Reading Gaol, for larceny : he is a native of Cliff, near Lewes, Sussex, 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, blue eyes, dark hair, and inclined to curl, fresh complexion ; was discharged from the Royal Artillery in 1875 ; in his possession were found a pair of child's new leather Boots, No. 5 size, with brass eyelet holes, and brass rivetted, stamped ' 46' on the waist ; and a pair of woman's new leather Uppers, without fronts, cut to lace- up inside, and lined with drab jean, supposed stolen from some shop where he has called for work. The following pawn- tickets were found upon him relating to property also supposed stolen : a shirt, at Smith's, Church- street, Croydon, 29th March, 1877, in the name of Jolm Ross ; five Tools, with Cotton & Son, 75, Fenchurch street, and 1 and 2, Church- lane, Southampton, 27tli June, 1877, in the name of George Smith ; and four other tools on the following day at the same place, in the name of John Rose ; a rowel Iron, pledged with Drage, Northampton, 21st July, 1877, in the name of J. Rose ; and four toolwith Brailsford, Sussex- street, Not- tingham, 3rd Septemb i-, 1877, in the name of John Ross. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Bennett, Berks Constabulary, Newbury.— Bovj- street, March 11. Found in Box Tunnell on the G. W. Railway and about 200 yards from the east end on Hie down line, at 8.15 a. m. on 6tli instant, the dead body of a newly- born Female Child, wrapped in a coarse apron, bound round the top with a piece of white coarse calico, one bone button on the side about half way down, and a button- hole on the opposite side for the purpose of fastening it behind, with the letters ' s. t.' marked thereon ( but scarcely visible), and such as is now worn by servants, factory hands or women working in the fields. An inquest was held on the body the same day, and from the medical evidence given the jury returned a verdict of ' Found Dead.' Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Baldwin, Police Station, Chippenham, Wiltshire.— Bow street, March 11. Found dead about 6 a. m. on 7tli instant, by the side of one of the arches in a cutting on the Great Western Railway at Dartmouth- street, West Bromwich: a full- grown male Child, newly born, the body was wrapped in a piece of brown paper, and tied round with a piece of string. Information to be given at the Police Station, West Bromwieh, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, March 11. GEORGE HOLLINSHEAD, advertised in the Police Gazette of 1st instant, as missing from Hednesford, has been foulici and restored to his friends.— Bow- street, March 11. Description of two men who were on 8th instant, com mitted to Northallerton Gaol for 21 days hard labour, under the Vagrant Act: THOMAS HAMMOND, labourer, 37 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, liazel eyes, brown hair, and sallow complexion ; states he is a native of Manchester. JOSEPH SWIFT, pitman, 22 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, grey eyes, light brown liair, and fresh complexion ; states he is a native of Manchester. They have the appearance of habitual tramps, and 7 small leather fancy dog Collars were found in their possession, and are supposed to have been stolen. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Clarkson, North Riding Constabulory, Guisborough, or to Inspector Allen, Police Station, Loftus- in- Cleveland, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 11. FRAUDS AIB AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Absconded, charged under a warrant with withholding £ 40, the property of the Boiler Makers' and Iron Shipbuilders' Society : JOHN NEARY, about 41 years of age, 5 ft. 3 or 4 inches high, blue eyes, brown hair ( turning grey), dark ginger whiskers on low part of face [ and chin ( turning grey), very fresh complexion, long thin nose, stout build, a native of Kilkenny, in Ireland, and is well known in the North of England; dressed in blue reefer jaeket, dark grey tweed trousers and vest, hard black felt hat, and had with him a superfine suit of black. Fond of horse- racing, betting, card playing, & c. Late Secretary to the Sunderland No. 3 Branch of the Boiler Makers' and Iron Shipbuilders' Society. £ 10 reward will be given to any person who will give such infor- mation as will lead to his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stainsby, Detective Department, East Cross Street, Sunderland. — Bow- street, March 11. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Left his home on 26th ultimo : WILLIAM HENRY LEGG, a clerk, 21 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, slight build, prominent forehead, and scar corner of left eye ; respectably dressei in Chesterfield oveacoat, and round crowned black felt hat. Carried an ulster overcoat, also a parcel containing clothes. He was last seen oil the above c ate in the Waterloo- road, London, and has not since been hi a - d of.
