CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known hut not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giTing information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear t! ae Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and alljrpplicatior. s in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *** Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that - in information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, o£ the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Whereas, on 29th ultimo, the dead body of a Male Child, about 6 months old, was found in a brook near Sheepwash Lane, Tipton, and a Coroner's Jury having returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown,' a reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person, other than a police officer, who shall give- such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and - conviction of the murderer or murderers ; and the Secretary of State forihe Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. The child had light- brown hair, and four vaccination marks on his left arm ; and was dressed in a calico shirt with edging round the neck, a flannel petticoat with two tucks at the bottom, a • dark winsey skirt with a calico body and three white buttons on the back, odd white woollen socks, nearly new, and a diaper pinafore ; and was wrapped in a large common grey woollen shawl with two light- coloured stripes near the border, and five narrow amber- colourecl stripes between them. Informa- tion to be given to W. Congreve, Chief Constable of Stafford- shire, or at any Police Station in the county.— Bow- street, Feb'uary 20. FORGERY. Description of JOHN WARD SAMPHER, alias G. R. FARNE, char. ed with forgery and fraud, at Cannock, on 23rd ultimo : he is-- 36 years of age, 5 feet 3$ inches high ( without shoes), fresh complexion, brown hair, dark whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, hazel eyes, slight build, mole near left arm- pit, and one on right shoulder, cut on nose ; dressed in long grey ulster overcoat, white linen front, with "• old studs in, black felt or tall hat, genteel appearance, can • speak with French accent, and sometimes wears coloured spectacles; he altered a cheque for £ 8 10s. obtained at, Cannock into one for £ 80 10s. ; he was sentenced at Stafford Assizes, on 10th March, 1871, to 7 years penal servitude, and 3 years police supervision for forgery, and was released on ticket of leave, 27th October, 1876, since then he has been in business as a shoe manufacturer at Newcastle- under- Lyme, where he has a wife and one child now living. £ 5 reward will be paid for the arrest of Sampher, whose photograph can be seen on application to Mr. Superintendent Hill. In cashing the cheque lie received four £ 20 Bank of England Notes as follows: all London, dated 12thMay, 1877, Nos. K | 61 60364, K | 61 60366, K | 01 45187, and K | 61 45188. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on 19t'n instant, from the person whilst in a crowd in Euston- road : a large open- face gold chronometer Watch, No. 55104.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, February 27. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. On the night of 23rd instant, the dwelling house of Mr. Robert Wildgoose, holloway, was burglariously broken into, and the following articles stolen therein : four table Spoons ; • t. .' ravy ditto ; eight dessert ditto ; eight tea ditto ; six egg " ditto ; four salt ditto ; a small salt and mustard ditto ; four iam d'itto, two of them pearl handles and two thin twisted silver handle's ; eight table Forks ; eight dessert ditto ; two sauce Ladles ; two pairs of sugar Tongs, all electro- plated ; a pair of sugar Tongs and sugar Spoon, silver ; a plate Basket, with three divisions, lined with green baize; all the electro- plated foods marked ' W.' Supposed to have been stolen by two " men, one came to the house to beg at 5- 30 p. m. on 22nd instant, about 55 years of age, light hair, small grey whiskers; dressed in a dark coat, cotton cord trousers, and high soft black felt hat ; he walked with a stick and stooped very much until he had left the house when he was observed to walk erect; the other who remained on the road was a tall man. A reward of £ 5 will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Sharpe, Police Station, Wirks- worth, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, February 27. Stolen on 20th instant, by means of housebreaking, from Old Carlisle, near Wigton, the property of Jane Parkin : a woollen Shawl, red, white, and yellow striped ; a blue serge Coat, nearly new, double- breasted, bound with black braid, lined with black Italian cloth, two pockets outside of skirt, black covered buttons, two buttons on each sleeve ; a blue serge Yest, nearly new, double- breasted, bound with black braid, three pockets outside, one inside left breast, black covered buttons, black calico back, print calico lining ; a pair of check tweed Trousers, nearly new, fly fronted, bound round top with black cotton, black metal buttons; a grey tweed Yest, much worn, double- breasted, three pockets outside, black bone buttons, calico back ; a winsey Shirt, nearly new, black and blue striped ; a grey winsey Shirt, much worn ; a pair of grey tweed Trousers, boys size, been repaired on knees, and bottoms ; a hard black felt Hat, nearly new, size seven; a pair of elastic- side Boots, been repaired on heel and toe ; a Handkerchief, with the name ' W. Parkin' on one corner ; a white Table Cloth. The Shawl, Shirt, and Handkerchief have been recovered. By a man, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair, dark whiskers on side of face, rather stout figure. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Robinson, Constabulary Office, Wigton, Cumberland, or at the Office of the County Chief Constable, Carlisle.— Bow- street, February 27. On the night of 20th instant, a pawnbroker's shop in Ashton- under- Lyne, was burglariously broken into and entered, and stolen therein : thirty ladies' gold Dress Rings, various patterns ; thirty ditto Keepers, some are very wide ; thirty gentleinens' Dress and Mourning Rings, various patterns ; seventeen gold Wedding Rings, one weighing over 3~ oz. ; a pair of Ear- rings.; a quantity of gold Trinkets ; a lady's gold Chain, very long ; a coral and gold Necklet, with very peculiar pattern snap ; a gentleman's gold Ring, 15 carat weight; fifteen pairs of gold Sleeve Links and Studs, various patterns. Information to be given to Chief Constable Dalgliesh, Borough Police, Ashton under- Lyne, Lancashire. — Bow- street, February 25. During the night of 22nd instant, Fir Grove House, Weybridge, was broken into, and the under- mentioned pro- perty stolen therein : a sealskin Jacket, trimmed with fur; a black silk Dress and jacket Bodice ; a black cloth Jacket, trimmed, with fur ; four white silk Dresses, ' Princess' style ; three Overcoats, all black ; five pairs of Trousers, two pairs light; two Riding Habits, blue- black cloth ; a pair of gold sleeve Links ; two electro Cups, ' A. C. Field, Mill Hill School, one mile race' ; and a pair of electro knife Resters. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, Chertsey.— Bow- street, February 25. Stolen, by means of burglary, during the night of 21st instant, from the residence of W. H. Stone, Esq., at Norbury Park, Mickleham : four gold Medals, three have ' William Henry Stone' engraved thereon ; two gold Seals; three silver Trowels, two have the following inscription on them ' Presented to William Henry Stone,' & c., and the other ' Presented to Millicent Stone,' & c.; three gilt Clocks, one by Boxalls, Brighton, and one by Frodsliam, Strand ; a Cheque for £ 5; and some Postage Stamps. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, February 25. On the night of 17th instant a dwelling- house at East Elsley, Berks, was burglariously entered and the following property stolen therein : a brown plaid Coat, with four out- side pockets, brown studs, and a small hole burnt on the right breast; a dark mixture cloth Coat, diamond pattern ; a pair of grey mixture cloth Trousers ; a Waistcoat, dark figure and black studs ; a silk Scarf, blue and white ; a silk Handker- chief, yellow figured, with black flowers round the borders ; a woollen Scai'f, black and white plaid ; a Muffler, blue border, and stag's heads on each corner; a pair of Boots, side buttons and toecaps ; a ditto ditto, lace- up and nailed ; a ditto ditto, lace- up and not nailed ; a ditto ditto, elastic- sides, and imita- tion buttons ; a white cotton Shirt, linen front and collar; a blue and white striped cotton Shirt; two white twilled cotton under Shirts ; a cotton Handkerchief, with playing cards round border ; a pair of red and white cotton Socks and a white pair ; a black knitted woollen Guernsey ; a black felt Hat; a pair of brown kid Gloves ; a white cotton Handker- chief ; and a Razor with: black handle, and ' J. Mansard' on the centre of blade. All the stolen wearing apparel are small sizes. By two young men, from 18 to 23 years of age, one of them dark complexion, thin features, and small black moustache; the other fair complexion with small round features; both were dressed in the stolen clothes. Stolen on 17th instant, at Worcester, by means of house- breaking : six silver Tea Spoons, marked ' L. S.'; two ditto Table Spoons, marked ' J. H.'; a pair of silver Sugar Tongs ; a pair of electro plated Table Prongs ; an old fashioned verge Watch; two pairs of men's lace- up Boots ; a pair of women's kid Boots; a short grey tweed Coat, man's size; and £ 17 in Gold. Information to be given to Sergeant Pre< ce, City Police, Worcester.— Bow- street, February 22. Stolen by means of burglary on 12th instant, at Grant- Chester, Cambridge : The property of R. L. Bensly, Esq. : a large silver SoiTp Ladle, marked ' B.'; four silver table Spoons, marked ' D. V. R.'; six silver dessert Spoons, marked ' B.'; eight or nine silver tea Spoons, marked ' D. R.'; a pair of silver sugar Tongs, marked 1B.'; a silver butter Knife ; a child's silver Mug, about size of small tumbler, gilt inside and chased out- side, marked ' W. J. B.'; a child's silver- plated Mug, marked ' R. R. B.'; a silver wine Strainer ; some plated Forks ; the Contents of a Cabinet, of gold and silver Coins and Medals about 500 in number ; a violet silk Umbrella, with ivory handle, broken ; a black Overcoat with light grey lining, having some papers and a cheque Book of the London and County Bank in the pocket; two black frock Coats, ribbed cloth, pockets in lappets, and small pocket inside left breast, the coats would fit a man 6 feet high. The property of F. W. Lilley, Esq. : a silver caddy Spoon, marked ' F. L. L.' ; eight new small table Knives, with ivory handles, marked on blade ' Bona fide, John Wigfall and Co., Sheffield.' The property of Miss Cowland: a silver salt Cellar, standing on three claws, marked at the bottom of the first claw ' W. C..', the second ' E. P.', and on the third ' 1780'; six dessert Knives, with ivory handles, marked on blades ' H. G. Hall and Co.' Supposed by two men who left Royston ( about 12 miles off) railway station, by the 10' 24 express train, for London : oue about 40 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fails complexion, sandy whiskers and moustache ; was wearing some of the stolen coats, a high silk hat, rather greasy, and muffler; the other from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 0 inches high, light brown or sandy whiskers and moustache, was wearing one of the stolen coats, chummy hat, and muffler round ne : k. They are believed to be London thieves, who occasionally commit such offences as this in counties not far off; they left behind a box of matches, supposed of Swedish make, having on the front the figure of an elephant, and the words ' Tandsticker, makers, Kreuger and Jennings. Calmea' Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Strctten, Chesterton- road, Cambridge.— Bow- street, February 22. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Bowbridge, in the parish of Stroud, sometime between 23rd and 24th instant: a dark bay Mare, about 14 hands high, rising 5 years, long rough coat, having laid out all the winter, heavy mane and long tail, in good condition, shod all round, and no white spot or mark about her ; the property of Mr. James R. Ockford, of Little Mill, Stroud. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hanbidge, Stroud, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, Feb. 27.. Stolen from the farm premises of Mr. John Goodwin, at Markgate- street, about 2 a. m., on 20th instant: a very light dappled grey Gelding, 5 years old, of the Arab breed, sharp head, fan tail, has a small crack in near heel, and a piece of hair rubbed off the off hip, good action, worth about £ 40. Also 5 waggon Saddles with cruppers complete, some mounted with brass ; 4 sets of iron Ames; 5 waggon Collar's ; 4 new Cruppers, about 6 inches wide ; 6 cocoanut nose Bags ; about bushels of Oats and Beans in a sack, marked ' Newland, Luton, Beds'; a sack of Chaff; and a heavy spring Cart, painted dark green, picked out with light stripes. Wfss traced to Finchley the same morning. £ 10 reward will be paid by Mr. J. Goodwin, on recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Inspector Goodyear, Great Berkhampstead, Herts, or any Police Station in London.— Bow- strect, February 25. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Absconded from Ebbwvale, on 25th ultimo, charged with embezzlement: DANIEL LLOYD, late a clerk in the Ebbwvale Steel, Iron, and Coal Company ( Limited) : he is a Welshman, of gentlemanly appearance, about 40 years of are, about 5 feet 4 inches high, proportionate made, fair com- plexion, brown hair, and long brown whiskers and moustache; dressed when he absconded in a suit of black cloth, and hard bowler hat. He will most likely make his way to some part in the North of England. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Abergavenny, or to Mr. Super- intendent Foil, Tredegar Iron Works, Monmouthshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Ban- street, March 1. Stolen during the night of 24th ultimo, frora a waggon, while standing at the Biggleswade Railway Station : 30 yards of cotton Cord, 20 yards of brown Velveteen, 20£ yards of white toilet Covering, 59 yards of black Victoria lawn, 50 yards of Mecklin, 24 yards of pale hard book Muslin, and a pair of ladies stays ( stays have been recovered). By two men of the following description, one about 40 years of a » - e 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, small sandy moustache, hair cut sho't; dressed in dark coat, sealskin cap, and dark trousers. The other about 5 feet 8 inches high, much thinner than the other, dark complexion ; dressed in dark coat, broad brimmed billycock hat, and railway porter's trousers. They were traced from Biggleswade to Southill, on the mornin'o after the robbery, where they took tickets by the 10T5a. nu train for St. Pancras. Information to be given to Mr. Super intendent Bedlow, Biggleswade, or to Mr. Superintendent 6 Williams, Great Northern Railway, King's Cross, London. — Bow- street, March 1. Description of JOHN MERRICK, charged with stealing two Ducks, at Tividale, on 24th ultimo : 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes, stout build ; when last seen was dressed in black clothes, hard billycock hat, and lace- up boots; native of Brades- row, Tividale, and a labourer. A warrant is granted for his apprehension. Information to be given to Sergeant1 Cooper, Blackheath, near Dudley, or to Police Constable Given, Tividale, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 1. Stolen between 16th and 18th ultimo, from the premises • of Mr. Edmund Roberts, builder, Weedon; 2 Pit Saws, one 7 feet long, the other 6 feet 9 inches long, both 11 inches wide at heel ; 1 cross- cut Saw, 4 feet long, all the Saws have handles attached ; 1 2- foot Rule, has been cracked at one end and mended with glue. By RICHARD EARL, a tramping sawyer, a native of Dodford, near Weedon, about 40 years of age, but looks older, about 5 feet 11 inches high,- dark hair • and whiskers, turning grey, and abscess scar on left cheek ; dressed in blue serge jacket, dark cloth trousers, and hard felt hat. He sold the two pit Saws and 2- foot Rule at Silverstone, Northampton, and which have since been recovered. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Williamson, County Police Office, Weedon, Northampton- shire, who holds a warrpnt for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 1. Description of WILLIAM SMITH, alias TICKET SMITH, wh © absconded from South Stockton on 18th ultimo, charged with fraudulently embezzling two sums of money " belonging to the lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which Lodge he was Secretary : he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark brown hair, complexion inclined to be fresh, has very broad front teeth, proportionate figure, walks very erect with his head thrown back, and generally has his hands in his trousers pockets; dressed in grey or brown mixture suit, and black billycock hat. Was for a number of years employed as mineral agent on the Stockton and Darlington Railway, but for the last 4 or 5 years has been attending the principal race meetings, and also acting as bailiff for the County Court. Is much given to boasting, and will be likely to spend much of his time at public houses frequented by the lower class of betting men, or may try to get employment as a waiter or barman at a public ' house. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Simpson, Constabulary Office, South Stockton, North Riding of Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 1. Absconded on 20th instant, from 150, New Bond- street, St. George's, stealing £ 7 14s. 6d. : a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and moustache, pockpitted ; dressed in dark brown Chesterfield overcoat, grey trousers, small black necktie, black felt liat; lately resided at 26, Paradise- street, St. Marylebone.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, February 27. Absconded on 21st instant, from 10, Woburn- buildings, St. Pancras, stealing : a lady's gold single- case lever Watch, gold dial, steel hands, engine- turned cases ; a lady's gold Albert Chain, small link pattern, with small piece of gold Chain, crystal Cross ( mounted in silver), and a gold Seal ( turquoise set with white stone); a lady's gold mourning Ring, set with pearls, in shape of a forget- me- not; a gentle- man's gold hunting Watch, engine- turned cases, white dial, steel seconds hand, black jet Chain attached ; a gentleman's gold and enamelled Ring, set with topaz; £ 3 in Gold ; and £ 1 Is. 6cL : a woman, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout, rather sallow complexion, dark hair ( turning grey), and dark eyes; dressed in blue serge dress, grey astracan jacket, black velvet bonnet ( trimmed black ribbon and flowers).— Metropolitan Police, E Division, February 27. Absconded on 23rd instant, stealing : a pair of lady's new side- spring Boots; an old brown stuff Skirt ; a child's white Pinafore a dozen white cambric Handkerchiefs; a red silk Scarf ; ' an old black Bonnet, trimmed with black velvet and feather : a woman, 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, brown hair ; dressed in black stuff dress and jacket, black bonnet, shabby appearance.— Metro- politan Police, E Division, February 27. Description of a man who has absconded, charged with another man in custody, with stealing a silver lever Watch, from the house of John Blower, at Humberstone, Leicester- shire, on 18th instant, the watch having been found pledged in Leicester : he is 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, pale complexion, light brown hair, whiskers shaved off, small light moustache, proportionate build, blind of the right eye, both ankles deformed, and is a brickmaker by trade ; dressed in dirty light- coloured coat and vest, dark check trousers, worn through one knee, old lace- up boots, with toe- caps, and black billy hat ; was last seen in or near Burton- on- Trent, on 22nd instant ; will probably apply for relief at tramp wards, & c. Information to be given to Mr.. Superintendent Moore, Police Station, Belgrave, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, Feb. 27, Stolen from Pelsall on 21st instant: a Wheelbarrow painted slate colour. By THOMAS WEBB,' 38 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache; dressed in pilot jacket, moleskin trousers and vest, black billycock hat, and lace- up boots. He_ is a colliery enginenran, and sleeps in engine houses, & c., and is well known in Leicestershire, Staffordshire, and Worcestershire. . Infor- mation to be given to Sergeant Arnold, Rushall; near Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bovj- street, February 27. Stolen on the night of 23rd instant, from the dwelling- house of W. S. Gore Langton, Esq., Newton- park, Somerset: A pair of diamond Ear- rings, pear shaped. A Necklace of two rows of pearls, diamond clasp. A pearl Necklace, with two rows of pearls, and small diamond clasp. A gold Bracelet, set with diamonds. A diamond Locket. A diamond heart- shaped Locket, with blue enamel. A Cross of large turquoises, set with small diamonds. A large ruby hoop Ring. A large pearl ditto. A smaller ditto. A turquoise serpent Bracelet. Two hair Bracelets, with diamond clasps, in green enamel. A Pin, large pearl, with leaves of turquoise. Ditto, emerald in gold claw. A thick gold Chain. Three smaller ditto. Ten silver gilt and gold centred Tops of Bottles and Boxes of dressing- case, initials ' A, G. M,' A miniat tre of a lady, set in paste. A turquoise Ear- ring. P O L I C E GAZETTE. A pale Mue enamel Locket, with coronet and initials in very small diamonds. A thick gold Roman Chain and Locket, with lapis lazuli. A gold Locket, with diamond Cross. About £ 6 in Gold, And other Jewellery. Supposed by two men of the followinS description : one about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, hair cut short, and 3mall whiskers; dressed in dark cloth jacket, light troiisers, and bowler hat. The other about 35 years of age, short, stout, broad shoulders, short neck, fresh complexion, brown beard and moustache ; dressed in dark cloth overcoat, and soft hat. ,£ 100 reward will be paid by Mr. Gore- Langton to any person who shall give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the Offenders, and recovery of the stolen property, or a proportionate reward according to the amount of property recovered. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, at his Offices, Glastonbury, or to Mr. Superintendent Morgan, County Police Station, Upper Bristol- road, Bath, Somerset.— Bow- street, February 27.
