JONES alias JOHN BARFIELD, described in the Police Gazette of 14th instant, charged with j assaulting and wounding with intent to murder Joe Fawcett,; licensed victualler, at Great Chart, Sent, on the evening of ; 17th instant: he is 24 to 26 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. high, fresh complexion, full eyes, light moustache, no! whiskers ( it is supposed his eyes are blackened from a blow j and face may be scarred), and walks flat- footed ; dressed in | long brown overcoat or ulster, dark snuff- coloured corduroy ; trousers, wore two rings ( one an oblong shape) on his hand ; had with him a small Yorkshire silver rough- grey terrier bitch, answers to the name of ' Lady,' ears cropped and tail ditto. On 1st instant, the dead Body of a female Child, newly- born, was found in a corn field near West Rainton, Durham, wrapped in two white napkins and a long white cotton gown. ] At the coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or peisons unknown' was returned. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 9 a m. and 3 p. m. on 19th instant,, from Skelton, Howden : 2 top Coats, one long blue cloth, three pockets outside, velvet collar, and buttons covered with black cloth. The other a blue pilot Reefer, bound with black braid, black velvet collar, bone buttons, four pockets outside ; also a check Waistcoat, and a cotton Shirt, with red, wnite, and blue stripes. Amended description of JOHN HARNESS, charged on a warrant with breaking and entering the dwelling- house of James Cook, of Bishop Wilton, on the night of 5th mist., and stealing therein a silver Watch ( recovered), sold in the name of Jo tin Lee, of Binbrook, Lincolnshire, and advertised iu the Police Gazette of 17th instant: he is a native of Preston, near Hull, but generally tells people he belongs to Lincolnshire. He went by the name of JOHN ABBEY, while living iu Bishop Wilton, is usually known by the name of ' Jack,' but assumes a different surname at every place he goes to, he is a labourer, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, small light whiskers and moustache, has a bald place on the top of his bead, extending to the forehead, about the size of half- a- crown piece, the mark of a kick received in a row, which he combs his hair over; dressed in fustian coat and vest, dark striped trousers, soft black billycock hat, with a peacock's feather stuck in band, and red and green scarf round his neck. Has the appearance of a farm servant. He was last heard of at Middleton, at which place he stayed on the previous night at a tramp's lodging- house Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Wool, Police Station, Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire.— Bow- street, Septem- ber 21. Between 9 am. and 5 p. m. on 17th instant, the cottage of Richard Knight, of Elston Marsh, Burghill, near Here- ford, was broken into and stolen therein : a pair of wojllen cord Trousers, one of the pockets have been repaired ; a new dark cloth Waistcoat; a dark grey Jacket, two pockets at sides; a pair of new cotton Braces ; a pair of black cloth Troupers; to be given to Inspector Hawtin, Police Station, Thane, Oxon.— Bow- HYreet, September 21. Stolen on the night of 9th instant, at Wombourn, near Wolverhampton : a cream- coloured waggon Mare, 3 years old, marked on fore fetlock. A black waggon Mare, 3 years old, fired on hocks. A bay thorough bred Mare, fired on hocks, aged. A brown half- bred horse Colt, 2 years old, with black points, the property ot Mr. John Hill, Wombourn. Stolen on 12th instant, from the Angel Inn, at Neath' Glamorganshire : a bay mountain Pony, 12 months old, about 11 hands high, white pear- shaped stripe on forehead, loiag mane and tail, mane curly and parted on both sides. Supposed booked by rail to Peterborough by some horse dealer, who attended Neath fair on the above date. Stolen during the night of 11th itstant, from a stable and yard at Selly Oak, near Birmingham: a black Mate, aged, about hands high, saddle mark on back, white spot ou off side, broken knees, and ia good condition ; two sets of Harness, brass mounted, ring off one set of hames ; a Sacdle, pummel a little torn; and a butcher's Cart, black, picked out with red, maker's name ' Taylor, Bromsgrove- street, Bir- mingham,' on cap of wheels. £ b reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. The horses have not been recovered, but were traced to Barnet Fair, near Loudon. The man sf. ill at large is about 40 years of age, about 5 leet 9 inches high, and clean shaved ; dressed in light brown coat, cord trousers, and black bowler fast,. Stolen from a field at Yardley, on the night of 10th instant, the property of Mr. John Jones, of Birmingham : a dark bay horse Colt, rising 3 years old, 13 hands high, dark legs, long mane and tail, and has a swelling on the near hind leg near the hock, caused by a recent kick. Stolen from the person of Thomas Griffiths, a navvy, between 2 and 4 p. m. on 11th instant, whilst lying asleep in a stable by the road side at Whittington, near Lichfield : a silver lever Watch, silver dial, gold fingers, No. 4918, maker Thomas Gilbert, Rugeley. Information to be given to Sergeant Hammond, Shenstone, near Lichfield, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, September 19. * The man charged with robbing Mr. Henry Swinson Coppin, Clarence Hotel, Reading, Berks, with violence, on the London- road, between Twyford and Hare Hatch, as advertised in the Police Gazette of 31st ultimo, i3 still at large. A reward of J10 is offered, viz: £ 5 for the appre- hension and conviction of the man who robbed Mr. Coppin, j and £ o for the restoration of the gold watch or diamond ring. Between 11 p. m. 18th and 6 a. m. on I7th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. James John Mortlocks, Snowlands, Hadham- road, Bishops Stortford, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a new drab Overcoat, with drab velvet collar ; a thick black Overcoat; a lady's Waterproof, with leather strap ; two pairs of gent's Boots, one spring- aide, one lace; a black felt Hat, marked inside ' Pittock, Bps. Stortford ;' a pair silver Sugar Tongs; a plated Rummer; two plated Cruet Tops; a silver plated Drinking Flask ; and lis. in Silver. The thieves left behind a pair cf Boots, nearly new, imitation lace- up A Writing Desk and several other articles of Wearing Apparel were taken from the house and left under a hedge in a field some distance off. The thieves also drank two bottles of Sherry. Supposed by two tramps, having the appearance of painters, one much taller than the other, and one wore a cheese- cutter cap. Description of a man in whose possession was a Ring,: stolen by means of housebreaking from 1, Sc. Helen's- roacJ, Hastings, as advertised iu Police Gazette of 10th instant, he pledged the ring shortly after it was stolen : he gave the name of DAVIS, and said he had been barman at a public- house in Jewin- street, London, EC.: he ia about 25 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark h* ir, moustache, and whisker?, shaved on the chin, and full pale face; dressed in dark tweed coat, shepherd's plaid trousers, and black round felt hat; he left Hastings by 4' 10 p. m. train on 10th instant, per South Coast Railway. Abscosded from Abertillery on 16th. instant, charged with stealing 81£ lbs. of Tin Plate, ( he propertv of Philip S. Phillips, Esq., of Abertillery : JESSE FRY, a tinker, 25 or 26 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slight make, sallow compfexion, thin face, no whiskers, may have a slight moustache, dark brown hair cut close, grey eyes, long face, leans bis head forward when walking, lounging gait) and slovenly appearance; supposed dressed in a dark grey suit of 8 POLICE GAZETTE, Sept amber 28 clothes and black bowler bat. He had in his possession a tin Box, about 2 feet long. He is a native of Cirencester. He may endeavour to leave the country. Stolen from No. 15 hut, W. lines, South Camp, Aldershot, between 4' 30 and 6' 30 p. m. on 15th instant: a light check woollen cloth Coat, Trousers, and Vest; a Coat, pepper- and- salt coloured tweed, single breasted, and pockets at sides ; a round hard felt Hat, slate colour ; a pair of lace- up Boots, man's size, neariy new; a Shirt, ( white with blue spots), nearly new; a white silk pocket Handkerchief, nearly new, marked in the corner 1W. Description of GEORGE WILFRED STEPHENSON, • who absconded from Cambridge on 13th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing two sums of Money belonging to the Cambridge Improvement Commissioners ; he is 55 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, rather stoutly built, thin hair turning grey, has a r « d blotchy face, and is much given to drink, iron grey whiskers, moustache and beard ; dressed in a white hat with light dust coat. He was some years ago engaged as secoad architect at the building of a large hall at Liverpool, and for the last eight years as surveyor for the Borough of Cambridge. J20 reward will be paid to any person or persons giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of the said George Wilfred Stephenson by Head Constable Turrall. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Stanley Street- road, Iffley, near Oxford, on 14th instant, the property of Mr. Nutter : a blue dress Coat, silk lining, recently repaired at the skirt pockets. By a man, about 32 years of age, about 5 feet 6Jr inches high, hazel eyes, brown hair, and fresh com- plexion ; dressed in dark clothes. He was discharged from the Oxford County Prison on 11th instant, after 3 months imprisonment for vagrancy. Stolen on the night of 11th instant, at Aldershot, the property of Surgeon Major Wilson : a pilot cloth Overcoat, velvet collar; a dark grey tweed mourning Coat; a pair of Cambridge woollen cord Trousers ; a pair of dark tweed trousers, nearly new; a pair of kerseymere Breeches ; a pair of side- spriBg Boots, nearly new; a gold Ring, with blood stone; two shirt Fronts, one coloured ; and several Collars and Neckties. By 2 privates of the 2nd Battalion 8th Foot, who will probably be wearing the stolen property. One is 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, a native of Kilkiel, County Down. The other 25 years of age, 5 feet 5f inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, blue eyes, ' J. K.' tattooed on right arm, a native of Edinburgh. These men enlisted at Liverpool. Description of a young man who absconded, charged with obtaining various sums of Money from clergymen and others, in the neighbourhood of Droitwich : he is about 17 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, much sunburnt; dressed as a midshipman, greasy trousers, much worn behind at the heel-*; his father was formerly a clergyman at Droit- wicb, and he represents that he has lately been paid off from his ship, and is in search of his father. Absconded on 7th instant, charged with larceny as bailee of .£ 12: JOSEPH SKIP, 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sallow complexion grey eyes, long nose, dark hair, proportionate make. He is a groom, and has been traced to 17, North- street, Edgware- road, London, where he left on 10th instant. Description of JOHN CARD, charged on a warrant with obtaining J I, by false pretences, from Geo. Sweetman, of Wincanton, on 15th instant, by stating he was in the employ of Lord Churston : he is 27 years of age, 5 feet 9 to 10 inches high, small moustache, bad leg, turn- up nose, a native of Wincanton; dressed in a brown plaid suit of clothes, bowler hat, side- spring boots, is well known amongst cab driver^, stablemen, and horse trainers; he took a ticket at Bruton, on 17th instant, for Bristol, where he has a brother working in a smith's shop. Description of ISAAC LEVY, alias GEORGE LEE, who was committed for trial at the next Dorset Quarter Sessions, charged with stealing seven Watches, but was afterwards removed, under an order from the Secretary of State, to Charminster Lunatic Asylum, from which place he made his escape on 13th instant: 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light brown hair, hazel eyes, sallow complexion, cut on left eyebrow, scar on nose, ' B. H' on right arm, leaf on back of right hand, anchor on left arm, and cut on right knee ; he states that he is a Pole, and speaks with a foreign accent. He states that he is a jeweller, and has lived at 82, New John- street West, Birmingham, but has lately been living at Church- hill, Hedcesford.
