Description of a man who gave the name of WILLIAM HILDER THURSTON, charged with obtaining £ i 10s., by means of a forged cheque, at Staplehurst, on 25th ult. : about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark com- plexion, small black whiskers and moustache ; dressed in a light grey mixture suit and round hard billycock hat; he stated that he was going to Paris to buy some horses. He took a ticket at Staplehurst Railway Station by the 11 p. m. mail train for Folkestone. Stolen by means of highway robbery from George Clarke, at Cradley Heath, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, about 9 p. m. on 26th ultimo : a German silver Watch and plated Albert Guard attached, the figure of a swan is engraved on the inside works of the watch. Stolen from the person at the Henley Regatta, on 22nd instant: an open- face silver Watch, seconds hands, maker supposed to be ' Price, King's Lynn,' No 20457. Supposed by a tramp who was seen in the neighbourhood, and asked the road to London ; he left his old clothes in the house, viz : a brown tweed jacket, much worn, marked ' W. Todd & Co., Limerick' on neck strap; old blue cloth double- breasted vest; old brown trousers, patched at knees; and very old odd boots, one with slit cut in front: he was wearing a hard billycock hat, he is about 19 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, slender build, round face,, slightly freckled, brown hair, and swollen under left eye. Stolen from a bookseller and stationer's shop in Bolton, during the night of 24th instant, entr ance having been effected through a window : about one and- a- half dozen valuable leather Purses; 8 ivory Tablets for Memoranda, with clasp; electro- plated Card Basket; 1 dozen silver- mounted Paper Knives with deer's foot, agate and ivory handles ; 1 dozen pearl Card Cases, with ornament of silver or coloured enamel let- in Bide ; 1 small brown calf Satchel with nickel- silver mounts; 1 square- shaped brown morocco Satchel with nickel- silver mounts and gilt lock ; 1 Opsra Glass ; 6 packs of PI ay ID g Cards ; 2 papier- machie Blotting Cases ; 1 dozen pearl - handled Fruit Knives ; 3 small Prayer Books, bound in Russia leather; 1 Church Service in ivory binding; 6 Prayer Books do. with monogram or cross on side ; 2 Bibles, one in brown morocco, the other in dark morocco, with clasp and oxydised silver mounts; 1 dozen silver- mounted Penholders ; 1 papier machie Card Rick ; 1 doz.- n aluminium Pencil- cases ; 6 Toothpicks and Charm Pencil- cases ; a large green Carpet Bag with t wo Straps across, in which many of the articles are supposed to have been carried away ; also a green and black plaid waterproof Overcoat. A reward of £ 3 will be paid for such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property or proportion thereof. AMD OATTXdB S- Vj£ AU* rG Absconded, charged with stealing a Cow ( recovered, having been sold in Derby Market) from Mr. John Garrett, of Dray cot t, near Risley. on 29' th ultimo ; & in< m givicg thy came of JAMES SMITH, alias THOMAS SMITH, alias JAMES GOODALL, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, rather slight figure, light complexion, light hair, whiskers, or moustache, and chin shaved ; dressed in dark coat aad vest, blaik and white check trousers, with stripe down side, much worn, and hard black billycock hat. He was at Sandiacre on the night of 28th ultimo, and said he had been a large farmer in Lincolnshire, also a gardener at Chelsea. He showed a photograph of himself and his two children, and a large number of pawntickets. £ 5 reward will be paid on apprehension and conviction of the offender. BUBOM1Y AW © BREAKING. Between 3 and 7 p. m. on 30th ultimo, the dwelling- house of William Pugh, labourer, of Burghope, Wellington, near Hereford, was entered by the upstairs window, which was left open during the absence of the family, and stolen therein : a new pair of watertight Boots, nailed, and had the maker's stamp on the sole in four places under the instep, and five places under the toes, without laces ; and a red silk Handkerchief. Two men who were along the road from Hereford to Leominster are suspected : the one a navvy, and the other a soldier, the navvy being the tallest, and wore a jimcrow hat, with the brim turned down, a white slop, and carried a bag or bundle on his back ; the soldier were a cap, • with yellow band, jacket with yellow braid across the breast, and trousers with red stripe. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Cope, County Police Station, Hereford, — Bow- slreet, July 6. Between 2 and 4 p. m. on 28th ultimo the cottage of Hugh Houlding, of Moreton Wood, near Market Drayton, was broken and entered and stolen therein : a black cloth Jacket and Vest, pockets in breasts, black horn buttons; a pair of black cloth Trousers, nearly new ; a blue and white plaid bundle Handkerchief, torn at corners; and £ 1 in Gold. About 10 30 on the night of 2nd instant, a cash Box containing one £ 10 Bank of England Note ; eight £ 5 Notes of the Lancaster Bank and Bank of England ( one of the notes has ' J. H,' on the back); and about tbirty- five 5s Pieces, were stolen from a bed- room in an hotel at More combe, bj three well dressed smart looking meD, two of whom are it custody. They were seen together at Blackpool last week, ir company with some men from Manchester ; they are supposec to be well known in Yorkshire, and to Lave been lately ii the neighbourhood of Grimsby and Louth. Description of the man not in custody : about 27 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, light sandy hair, slight mous- tache, and very little whiskersdressed in a grey tweed plaid suit, black billycock, gold Albert Guard, chain pattern, with a locket attached. Description of the men in custody : one gives the name of WILLIAM PENDER, about 43 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, rather stout build, dark com- plexion, black hair and whiskers, chin and upper lip shaved, blue eyes, and a little bald top. of head ; dressed in dark clothing, white shirt front, and black soft billycock ; the other gives the name of BROOK, BOOTH, and JOBLING, about 37 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sandy complexion, aandy hair, whisker.-, and moustache, blue grey eyes, cut back of right thumb, first joint second finger left hand stiff, and small cut inside left hand ; dressed in grey tweed clothing, and black billycock. Information to be given at the County Police Office, Skerton, Lancashire.— Bou>- ttreet, July 6. Absconded on 3rd instant, from 6, Princes- road, Norbiton, stealing £ 35 in gold : a man, 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes ; dressed in blue pilot jacket, dark tweed trousers and vest, and side spring boots. He is a gardrter.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, July 6. Stolen from a travelling van at the ' Standard' public- house, Dover, on 20th ultimo : £ 30 in Gold, and two plain gold Rings, ' Maria Thompson' inside the same. By SARAH THOMPSON, 24 years of age, short and slight, dark eyes and complexion, and full face. Accompanied by a boy, 4 years old, with light hair, and dressed in blue monkey jacket, Scotch cap, and trousers fitting very tight. The wom « n travels the country selling brushes, and has a pedlar's certificate issued at Dover. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Sanders, Borough Police, Dover, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bvw- streeU. July 6. Absconded from Longstock, charged with stealing from a dwelling- house a silver Watch ( recovered): a mac, lately discharged from the Rifle Brigade, about 21 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, and dark freckled face ; dressed in uniform trousers, military boots, and black coat, too large for him. He was seen at Longstock on the morning of 27th ultimo. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Bemett, Andover, Hants.— Bow- street, July 4. Description of a man who absconded from Seaton Ross, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, on 26th ultimo, stealing a drab cloth Coat, a black cloth Vest, and a pair of light mixture Trousers, with black stripes down the sides : about 29 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, very much sun- burnt, light hair aud moustache, tattooed with a man and a cross on breast, a female on one arm, & c. ; he will probably be dressed in the stolen clothes, as he left behind him a black cloth coat, ve s1', and pair of trousers, all much worn. He is supposed to ba a saddler, but was working as a brickyard labourer on the above date. Information to be given to Inspector Cusworth, East Riding Constabulary, Market Weighton.— Bmc- street, July 4. Absconded on 29th ultimo, from Shepherd's Lane, Brixton, stealing £ 92 : a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 ins. high, dark hair, sandy moustache, and small features ; dressed in short grey coat, grey trousers, felt hat, laced boots, is a clerk, and carried a black leather hag.— Metropolitan Police, W Division, July 4. Stolen from a bedroom at Matlock Bath, on 30th ult. : a small white dimity Bag, containing seven Sovereigns, eight Half- sovereigns, £ 1 in Silver, and some Copper Money. By a lodger, who gave the name of EDWIN CRANE, and said he was a native of Peterborough, but then held a situation, as clerk iu a corn merchant's office in Liverpool : he is about 19 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair, fresh com- plexion, hazel eyes, and is lame of the right foot, on which he walks on the right side of the sole, and scarcely touches the ground with the heel. He left behind him a pawnticket for a silver Geneva Wa, t. cb, No. 24404, pawned with Alfred A. Loose, High- street, Wisbeach, on 29th August, 1876, in the name of E. Crane, for 10s. ; also a pawnticket for silver lever Watch. No. 22556, pawned with John L. and Fk. . rley, 43, Broad Bridge- street, Peterborough, in the name of Ed win Crane, for £ 1 5s. ; also left at his lodgings six new Knives and Forks, round brown bone handles ; and two half di zen acket3 of Combs, one brown, the other white. Description of JAME3 GROSVENOR, a clock and watch cleaner, charged with stealing a silver Watch, recovered the property of John Morris; he is about 30 years of age'' 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, dark sandy moustache, whiskers shaved off; dressed in a black cloth suit, grey cloth cap, with peak in front and behind, and low shoes. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, or to Sergeant Gough, Ellesmere, Salop who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., July 4. Description of JONAS WILDSMITH, late of Box- moor, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, charged with embezzling several sums of Money : he is about 35 years of age about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair, fresh and healthy com plexion, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in dark clothes and hard felt hat; he has been employed by the Grand Junction Canal Company, and London acd Midland Counties Carrying 2 POLICE GAZETTE, July 6 Company, and since he absconded has been employed by a carrier at Wakefield, Yorkshire. Information to be given to Mr, Superintendent isgate, Police Station, Hemel Hemp- stead, Herts, who holds a warrant for his apprehension,— Bow- street, July 4. Absconded from Dumfries, charged with theft and desertion from the Scottish Borderers Regiment of Militia : JAMES JOHNSTONE, a tailor, native of Kelso, Roxburgh- shire, 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, ordinary make, smart appearance, fresh complexion, light brown hair, no • whiskers, light brown moustache, grey eyes, and scar left side of forehead ; dressed in militia trousers, and the follow- ing clothing, which is stolen, dark corded tweed shooting Coat, double- breasted, black bone or gutta percha buttons, one off back, much worn at wrists, small three cornered tear on back mended, about half worn; dark tweed Vest, small broken cheek, double- breasted, dark bone or gutta percha buttons, about half- worn; aud a double peaked daik grey tweed Cap. He had a double- case silver verge Watch, cream- coloured dial, No. 2405, small chip off dial near chapter ' 6,' yellow coloured metal hands, break in outer case, which has been mended, attached a small German silver Chain, curb pattern. He deserted on 19th, and committed the theft on the morning of 22nd ultimo. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Dumfriesshire.— Bow- si. reet, July 4, Description of EDWIN CRANE, late oF Peterborough, corn merchant's clerk, charged with stealing a Bilver Watch ( recovered), 15 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh com- plexion. brown eyes and hair, and crippled in right leg and foot. He was convicted of felony on 12th December last, at Peterborough, and sentenced to three calendar months hard labour, and will probably be found with a travelling theatri- cal company. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Borough Police Office, Peterborough, Northamptonshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. - Bow- street, July 4. Absconded on 6th ultimo, from 4, Regent- square, Saint Pancras, stealing a black enamelled Brooch, set in gold, raised in centre, with white weeping willow, set with pearls ( two missing), glass set in bacs for hair, one side engraved ' George,' the other side ' Brook': a woman, 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stcut, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, and grey eyes; respectably dressed, A servant.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, July 4. Stolen about 10 a m. on 29th ultimo, from the dwelling- house of Alfred Dodwell, No. 3, James- street, Birchfields, Handsworth: a blue pilot cloth Jacket, two pockets on hip- i and one inside left bi east; alight- coloured single- breasted plaid Vest; a pair of brown and black plaid cloth Trousers; a pair of brown cotton Stockings, new; a very old silver Geneva watch, No. 67796 ; and a long silver Guard. By a man, who lodged in the house and has since absconded, 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion and hair, no whiskers or moustache, slender build, small features, in- kneed, and walks quickly ; dressed in a dark grey coat, old dirty corduroy trousers, black billy- cock hat, and lace- up boots ; a painter. He has a relative residing in Old Meeting- street, Birmingham. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Woollaston, West Brom- wich, or to Inspector Whitehurst, Police Station, Hands- " worth, near Birmingham, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, July 4, Stolen on 28th ultimo, from a hedge : a pair of new blue worsted Stockings, white tops and toes, red stripe between blue and white in tops. Snpposed by two tramping navvies, one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair and moustache on upper lip ; dressed in black hat, brown coat, black cord breeches, new blue stockings, navvy boots. The other about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, brown hair, and clean shaved ; dressed in brown cap, brown corduroy jacket and breeches, white stockings, and navvy boots. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Cope, Hereford, or to Police Sergeant Phillips, Abbeydore, near Hereford.— Bow- street, July 2. Stolen at North Camp, Farnboro', Hants, on 2nd ult. : a number of gas fitters' Tools ( recovered) ; the property of Messrs. Willey and Co.. By a tramping labourer, who gave the name of DAVIS alias PAUL, about 35 yeara of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes, had a moustache and whiskers, chin and throat shaved; has lost one finger ; dressed in moleskin jacket, vest, and trousers, black bowler bat, and shooting boots, with hooks. He is supposed to be a pensioner from the army. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent Stephenson, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, July 2. Stolen on 9 th ultimo: a corn Hoe and Shaft, the property of William Blackburn, at Caister. The Hoe ia tinned, the blade can be taken out, snd waa made out of a cutting knife. By JAMES BOLDOCK, between 50 and 55 yeara of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, of dirty appearance, hair turning grey ; die; sed in a white slop with waistband, torn at the elbovts, fustian trousers, check shirt, black billycock hat, and strong laced boots Kiuch too large for him. He is a labourer, a native of Osgodby, Lincolnshire, has lately been working at the sewerage works at Lincoln, and is supposed to be now in Sheffield. A warrant is issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Danby, Brigg, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, July 2. During the night of 29th ultimo, a pair of lace- up Boots, with brass eyelet holes, eight hooks on top, toe caps, and nailed; a snuff- coloured Coat, faded, with small raised squares, two outside pockets, one breast pocket, cuffs recently braided ; 2?. 6d. in Silver; and about 5 s. in Coppers were stolen from the Swan public- house, at Elston, near Bedford, the property of the landlord. By a man who had lodged in the house for 8 nights previous : about 35 or 40 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, very much sunburnt, black hair and whiskers, cut very short, whiskers about a month's growth, no moustache, dark eyes, scurvy on right side of chin, walks very erect; dressed in black cloth coat, dark cloth vest and trousers, patched on the knees and seat, grey cloth cap, hooked down in front, and a pair of military Wellington boots, stamped ' 2290 | 23 B, R. A. | 2 77', - which he left behind him; he said he had served in the army for 10 years, in India, and had been discharged about 3 months, and that he had a relative living in Cheshire. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Kennedy, County Police Station, Bedford, Bedfordshire.— Bow- street, July 2. Turner & Co,, Suffolk Works': he is about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather sallow complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, chin shaved, and is of mo& rate build. When he obtained the goods he represented himself to be J. Arnott, of the firm of J. Arnott & Co., warehousem, 54, Hope- street, Glasgow, ( no such firm being in existence), and signed a cheque on the Commercial Bank of Scotland, St. Enochs- square, Glasgow. Arnott has no account with the bank but it appears a person giving the name ' Colin Hunter, lodged £ 10 with the bank some time ago, (£ 9 of which he withdrew on the following day), and obtained 12 blank cheques, one of which he fraudulently used to obtain possession of the goods enumerated and described above. The same man is also believed to have committed a like offence in Manchester, in April last, when he gave the name C. HUNTER, Informa- tion to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Central Police Offices, Sheffield, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. - Bow- street, June 29. Absconded from Warrington, charged with stealing a silver lever Watch, No. 6687, maker Harris. He was convicted at the Lent Assizes at Cambridge, on 18th March, 1871, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for arson. No. 181 G. subject to police supervision, who left Sutton, near Hull, about the end of last June, without, reporting : he is 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, slender make, no whiskers, dark eyes, sallow complexion, blue rings on second and third fingers left hand, two stars, anchor, sword, and cross on back of left hand, Union Jack, two crowns, and cross on left arm, anchor on back of right hand, and is a fitter. He was convicted on 2nd January, 1873, of stealing an overcoat at Spalding, and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and 7 years police supervision ; on 5th November, 1876, at Spalding, to 1 month, for larceny; on indictment at quarter sessions at Spalding, 6th January, 1870, for felony, and sentenced to 6 months.
