INFORMATIONS RICHARD OWEN, alias WOODBINE, alias LITTLE DICK THE NAVVY, supposed to be a native of Salop, wife and infant, with father in law, an ex- railway sub con- tractor, residing at Derby, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout build, very active, light hair, no whiskers, full face, good features ; - supposed dressed in dark jacket, moleskin or dark Bedford cord trousers, buttons at bottom of legs, sometimes wears a sealskin cap, and sometimes a dark cloth cap with cloth peak, strong navvy boots with toe and heel plates. May have the following dogs with them : one is a brown rough haired dog, crossed with sheep and greyhound, ll months old, answers to ' Charley,' is attached to Allman ; another is a dark brindle greyhound- looking dog, ten months old, answers to ' Lion,' attached to Owen; and another is a black greyhound- looking dog, two years old, answers to ' Snap,' is attached to Williams. £ 100 reward will be paid to any person who shall give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of these offenders, or a proportionate sum for such information as shall lead to the arrest and con miction of either pf them. On the 15th October last, the body of MARY ANN FAVEL, was found dead and burnt with i\ re in the house of her mother Jane Favel, at Lamsey, Leighton Buzzard, Beds, and there are reasons for believing that the said Mary Ann Favel was wilfully murdered by some person or persons unknown. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by the Govern- ment to any person ( other than a person belonging to any police force in the United Kingdom), who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the person or persons who caused the death of the said Mary Ann Favel; and the Secretary of State will; advise the grant of Her Majesty's pardon to any accomplice ; not being tbe person who actually caused the death of the j said Mary Ann Favel, who shall give such evidence as shall j lead to a like result. Information to be given to Chief Con-' stable Warner, Bedford, or to Superintendent Shepherd, Leighton Buzzard, Beds.— Bow- street, December 22. On the 17th instant, the d^ ad body of a female Childj newly- born, was found in a meadow by the side of the j Peterborough Bridge Wall, New Fletton, wrapped in a piece of unbleached calico, and tied round with a piece of string. At the coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons uijkno wn' was returned. Information to be given to Head Constable Hurst, Borough Police Station, Peterborough, Northamptonshire. — Bow- street, December 20. On the night of 30th ultimo, Mr. John Morrison, head gamekeeper to Francis Monckton, Esq., M. P., was attacked by a gang of five poachers at Crateford, near Brewood, Staffordshire, one of whom fired a gun with intent to murder him. One of the offenders who proves to be WILLIAM HUMPHREYS, alias JOLLY, of Shrewsbury, has been apprehended, identified, and remanded. The following men ( who have absconded) are charged on warrants with the j attempt to murder : THOMAS ALLMAN, alias TIMER, native of Shrews- j bury, 29 years of age, 5 feet 6| inches high, proportionate build, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, slight whiskers, left hand cut off at wrist, to which he fixes or unfixes at pleasure an iron hook, or occasionally an iroa knob, he usually carries the stump in trousers or jacket pocket, out of sight, the hook or knob is screwed, into a block, whilst a leather case covers his forearm, and is strapped above the elbow under his jacket; dressed either in cloth plaid woollen trousers, or corduroy trousers and waistcoat, washed nearly white, blue cloth cap, peak of same material, button on top, may wear a navvy's drab slop, which ties round waist with running tape. Is likely to be in possession of pawntickets for his Watch and Clothes. He has worked at navvy work, horse driving and boating, and is a well known leading poacher in Shropshire, Cheshire, Flint, Herefordshire, Derbyshire, Worcestershire, and Stafford- shire. WILLIAM PRICE, alias ' CHECKER,' native of Trench, near Wellington, Salop, by trade a forgeman, 31 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, medium build, brown hair and eyes, and broken nose ; dressed in new moleskin jacket, old moleskin trousers and vest, dark cloth cap, lace- up boots, and is likely to be with ALLMAN. JOHN WILLIAMS, alias < DAVIESS,' alias ' WORCES- TER DICK,' alias ' BRUMMY,' labourer and militiaman, supposed native of Worcester, 28 years of age, 5 ft. 6J ins. high, stout build, fresh complexion, light hair, no whiskers, grey eyes, oval visage, supposed cast in one eye, tattooed on right arm with apchor and bracelet, and cut mark on fore- head over right eye. Stolen from the person of John Wakeham, of Blackawton, mason, on the highway near Harbertonford village, in the parish of Harberton, Devon, about 9 30 p. m. on the 5th inst.: a silver Geneva Watch, with jet chain and padlock attached ; and a leather Purse, containing 1 Sovereign, and about 13s. in Silver. By two men : one is about 5 feet 9 inches high, and dressed in dark clothes and cap ; the other is about 5 feet 6 inches high, and wore a white slop and cap. Bi: MMEf ASfD MQWim On the night of the 15th, or early on the morning of the 16th instant, the vicarage house of Ware, Herts, was broken into, and stolen therefrom : 2 large black fur hearth Rugs, a piece of crimson Baize, a white table Cloth ; 3 dinner Napkins, a small table Cover, brown worked in silver ; a large black and crimson dining- room Cloth, a grey and black Shawl, one side all black with grey border; a brown wool Shawl, a study Clock, black marble. 10 inches long, 6 inches high ; a silver Paper Cutter, in case, with white knobbed ivory handle ; a silver Paper Cutter, with brown transparent handle; 2 Waiters, one with three small legs, plated ; a polished mahogany Box, with one dozen gilt dessert Spoons, embossed; a gold Watch, maker William Wood, Lord- street, Liverpool; a butter Knife, 2 gravy Spoons, a silver sugar Spoon, a sugar Sifter, a sauce Ladle, a pair of asparagus Tongs, 2 dozen large white- handled Knives, a dozen smaller do., a carving Knife and Fork', and a pair of fowl Carvers. Supposed by three men, in a light cart, with empty wicker fijh baskets in it. They stopped at Ponder's End, and left about 5 a. m., going towards London. Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the discovery of the offenders shall receive a reward of £ 20. Information to be given to Chief Constable Robertson, Hertford.— Bow- st., December 20. Between 11 a. m. and 5 p. m. on the 18th instant, a cottage at Posenhall, near Broseley, in the occupation of Alice Garbett, § was broken and entered and stolen therein : one Penny. Also a cottage at Wyke, near Posenhall, in the occupation of Richard Onions, labourer, was broken and entered and stolen therein : 8d. in bronze Money and a nearly new hard black felt Hat. Information to be given at the County Constabulary Office, Much Wenlock, Shrop- shire. - Bow- street, December 20. Between 1 and 4 p. m. on the 18th instant, the house of Edward Bason, of the Hope, near Welshpool, was broken and entered, and stolen therein, supposed by a tramp : a dark grey cloth Jacket, pockets on the hips with flaps, one inside breast pocket, and a small patch about the size of a shilling on the elbow of right sleeve ; a pair of old lace- up Boots, rather hard worn, three rows of hob nails in fore parts, and the heel of the left boot has round- headed nails outside, and square nails inside; a green and yellow cotton Handkerchief; an old German silver Watch, without hands; a pair of Spectacles, with steel frame ; an old broken gold Ring ; a lady's gold Ring, with red stone ; an old grey cloth monkey Jacket, and an old pair of boots were left on the premises. Stolen from a field at Stretford, between 22nd ultimo and the 11th instant: a dark brown mare Pony, aged, tends high, white stripe down face, a lump under jaw, thick coat, and long tail. £ 2 reward will be paid by the owner on recovery of the Pony and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Bent, County Police Office, Old Trafford, near Manchester, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen, 12th, from a stable at the rear of the ' Wellington, public- house, North- hill, Highgate : a black cart Horse, 4 years, 17 hands, long tail, hair off top of near hind foot, in good condition. A reward of £ 50 will be paid on the recovery of the horse and conviction of the offender or offenders.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division Dec. 20. Description of a man, remanded until the 20th instant, on suspicion of stealing a bay Pony, about 12 hands high, square cut tail, no white about any part of body, in good condition, supposed stolen from a distance, as it was very dirty. The man gives his name as WILLIAM MAYBE, 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, small black whiskers, sallow complexion; dressed in a soft felt bowler hat, old grey tweed coat, black vest, corduroy trousers, heavy lace- up bocts, red check shirt, with blue cheeked one underneath. States he has worked at Bruton and Shrewton, Wilts. Information to be given to Superintendent Jeffs, North Petherton, Somerset.— Bone- street, December 18. LARGEST* A1B IMBIESLIMEIT. Stolen from the house of James King, Dane- street, Bed- ford, on the 15th instant : a black cloth Coat ; a black cloth Vest; a pair of black cloth Trousers; a black fine- ribbed cloth Coat, pockets behind ; and a pair of black doeskin Trousers. By JAMES NORMAN, a clerk, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, small whiskers and moustache; dressed in a brown mixture top coat, plaid trousers, and brown billycock hat; has very bad eyas, Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 22. Absconded on the 16th instant, stealing £ 6 6s. 6d., from Tottenham Court- road : a man, age 36, 5 feet 6 inches high ; dressed as a carman.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, December 22. Description of ALFRED GROSVENOR, charged on a warrant with embezzlement, on the 4th instant: he is a brewer's traveller, 32 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, full round face, small light whiskers and moustache, rather good looking, and very stout ; generally dressed in suit of light clothes, and black round top felt hat; geuerally walks with a stick, and very erect. Information to be given to Chief Constable Windle, Police Station, Hanley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, December 22. Stolen from a cart, while standing in Horse Fair, Rugeley, about 6' 30 p. m., on 16th instant : a drab- colour waterproof Coat, about 36 inches long, side pockets, velvet collar, nearly new. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford, or to Sergeant Chaplin, Rugeley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, December 22. Description of WILLIAM NASH, charged with steal- ing, on the 16th instant, from Stephen Jackson, at Hammer- wich— a grey cloth Overcoat, pocket on left breast with button to fasten it, ticket pocket on right side, and. black buttons ; and a black cloth Jacket, pockets on hips, one inside left breast, and black cloth buttons : he is 20 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slender build, thin face, no whiskers or moustache, and dressed in a black cloth jacket, rather shabby, brown plaid vest and trousers nearly new, hard black billycock hat, and elastic- side boots. Will prbably be found at a brickyard. He has lived at Hednesford and Huddlesford, and his father is supposed to live at Saltley College, near Birmingham. Information to be given to Superintendent Hill, Brownhills, Walsall, who holds a war rant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 22. Absconded from Shepton Mallet, on the 14th instant, stealing a dark blue cloth Overcoat, shepherd's plaid lining, the property of Robert Pattson, his master : a gardener's labourer, about 27 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, long neck, light hair, pale face, and little or no whiskers ; dressed in grey coit, mole or cord trousers, and cap with knob cn the tup. He was discharged from the Army with ignominy, and has since been imprisoned for re- enlisting. He will probably try to enlist again in the Army or Navy. Information to be given to Superintendent Williams, Shepton Mallet, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, December 20. Absconded from Hythe, on the 12th instant, stealing from a lodging- house a gold hunting lever Watch, white face, seconds hands, engine- turned cases, not much worn, a round- pattern gold Albert attached, also a small gold Locket, blue enamel, and the word ' Mizpah' on one side : a young man, about 5 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion, light brown haiv, no whiskers or beard, small moustache, rather slight build, and crooked nose ; dressed in dark cutaway coat and vest, dark mixture trousers, black tie, with purple stripes, and had three rings on one little finger. He had no luggage, was very desirous of obtaining a top bedroom, left the house at 1 30 pm. on the 12th instant on pretence of going to the railway station to enquire after his luggage, and had with him a light coloured stick. On the 11th instant, he sent a letter to post directed to Milverton, Millington, or Lillington, Warwickshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Raymond, Hythe, Kent.— Hm- ttreet, December 20, 398 8 POLICE GAZETTE. December 15 Absconded from Nottingham, on 24th ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing two £ 5 Bank of England Notes by card sharping, along with three other men, who were apprehended at the time, and have since been committed for trial at the next assizes : ROBERT WARDROPER, alias DOLLY, 32 years of age, 6 feet 1 inch high, fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, oval visage, no whiskers or moustache, thick made about the shoulders, and carr es his head rather forward. GEORGE FAWCETT, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, slight moustache, and had a little whiskers each side of face. This man was convicted at Doncaster Race Meeting in September last, and sentenced to two months' hard labour for card sharping. Information to be given to Chief Constable Poyntz, Borough Police Station, Nottingham.— Bow- street, December 20. J^ vAbsconded on the 16th instant, stealing from Nos. 294 and 295, High Holborn, £ 90 in Gold and Silver: a man, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, flarid complexion,, dark hair and whiskers, fair moustache, red face, and long nose ; dressed in a grey cutaway coat and vest, dark trousers, high black hat, and blue ulster coat,. It is supposed that he will emigrate to America.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, De- cember 20. The " Watch advertised in the Police G « estte of the 8th instant, as stolen from Highbridge Pelsall, has been recovered, and WILLIAM STORER, of Tamworth, a miner, is committed to sessions for trial for stealing the same. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Hill, Brownhillfi, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen from the • Eight Bells,' in Aylesbury, on the 9 th instant : a pair of women's Boots, recovered. By a tramping sailor, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, rather loDg and thick ; dressed in shabby dark clothes and cap, with leather peak. He carried a small umbrella, and he frequents low lodging- houses. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Benson, Police Station, Aylesbury, Bucks.— Bow- street, December 18. Description of GEORGE EVANS, alias LUDLOW GEORGE, charged on a warrant with stealing, at Clifford, Herefordshire, on 24th ultimo : a Mackintosh ( recovered), and a pair of blue woollen Stockings, men's large size, nearly new; about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slender build, very little dark brown hair and whiskars under chin, and bald on top of head ; dressed in grey jacket, dark cloth trousers with patch on one knee, and cap. He is a drover, sometimes collects rabbit skins, and is well known in Rad- norshire and Shropshire. Information to be given to Sergeant Ovens, Police Station, Witney, Herefordshire.—•. Absconded from Market Lavington, Wilts, charged with stealing a Hand Saw ( recovered), a Hammer, and a small Hatchet, the property of Mr. William Box, engineer : JOHN TARRANT, a labourer, 24 years of age, 5 feet 7\ inches high, fresh complexion, full features, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, and stout build ; dressed in light brown coat, corduroy trousers, and hard bowler hat. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Woodman, Wilts Con- stabulary, Devizes, or to Police Constable Grimby, who holds a Wftrruntrror iiM- appreheneion.— Bow- ttreet, December 18. Stolen from the house of Robert Allen, at Keadley, on the 10th instant, a pair of strong lace Boots, recently soled and heeled, the soles are sprigged, the heels have square headed nails ; a white flannel Sairt, feather stitched round the neck with violet coloured cotton ; a grey woollen Shirt, recovered ; 3 pairs of brown worsted Stockings; a black arid white check vest, much worn; and a piece of cooked Beef. By a lodger, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers ; dressed in a grey knotted cloth top coat, yellow cloth trousers, the stolen boots and vest, and black cloth cap with knob on top. In- formation to be given to Inspector Crawford, Epworth, near Bawtry, Lincolnshire.— Bonn- street, December 18. Description of W. W. FRANKLIN, alias COOPER, charged with obtaining by false pretences £ 8 13s. from 11, Upper St. Martins's Lane : 27 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, hair light brown, thick sandy moustashe, speaks quick, and of respectable appearance. Warrant issued. — Metropolitan Police, E Division, December 22. Description of CECIL HENRY COOK, charged with fraud : 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, slight moustache, and gentlemanly appear- ance.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, December 20. Description of JOHN STEVENSON, charged on a warrant viith obtaining a mackintosh Coat from George Henry Lennard, in Hull, on 27th ultimo, by false and fraudulent pretences. He is about 45 years of age, 6 feet 1 or 2 inches high, fresh complexion, large features., and has the appearance of a foreman or manager of works. His plan is to call upon some firm and give large orders, stating he represents the ' Trodingham Iron Works, or some such iinr, and then obtains goods on account. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 18. Missing since the 3rd instant, from 22, Highbury Quadrant, N. : Mrs. BAIRD, a widow, 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, long brown hair, braided on top of head, grey eyes, and good teeth ; dressed in deep mourning, jacket trimmed with crape, widow's bonnet, and white necktie. Suffers from rheumatism, is desponding, and it is feared some ill may befall her.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, December 22. , Remanded until the 26th instant, charged with stealing twelve yards of Ribbon, from a draper's shop at Gains- borough : MARY RUSSELL, name probably fictitious, 50 years of age, 4 feet 9 inches high, grey sunken eyes, dark complexion, cheek bones rather high and red, black hair, ;< nd heavy black eyebrows ; she is an Irish woman, and says she belongs to Belfast; dressed in brown winsey dress, grey • woollen shawl, black bonnet, with black feather, all dirty; she is tramping the country with a man 50 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, very dark hair, dark complexion ; dressed in a black coat, fustian trousers, stiff felt hat, and old boots, slit in several places ; speaks with a strong Irish accent. They have been at York, to which city the man has returned. Information to be given to Superintendent Sowden, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.—. Sow- siwis, Dec, 22, Sentenced to 3 months imprisonment for larceny, on the 13th instant: HENRY COOPER, a native of Yeovil, Somerset, painter, 19 years of age, 5 feet high, brown hair, grey eyes, chest deformed, and fresh complexion. WILLIAM LEWIS, native of Yeovil, 19 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, brown hair, hazel eyes, and fresh complexion. Sup- posed to have been convicted at Taunton, in ( Somersetshire. Informal ion to be given to Head Constable Matthews, City Police Office, Salisbury, " Wilts.— Bow- street, December 22, Missing from Willenhall, since the 18th instant: WILLIAM WHITEHOUSE, 66 years of age, rather short, and thin looking, grey hair and whiskers ; dressed in a black billycock hat, no neckerchief, blue and white cotton plaid shirt, blue pilot top coat, much worn, grey vest, mixed tweed tronsers, vary much worn, grey knitted stockings, blucher boots,, tied with leather laces. It is feared some ill has befallen him. Information to be given to Inspector Gasson, Constabulary Office, Willenhall, Staffordshire.—- Bow- street, December 2i!, Missing from Rugeley, since 6 a. m., 14th: RICHARD BENTON, a labourer, 70 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, brown hair, turning grey, . small giey ' whiskers, walks lame in left leg; dressed in drab slop, moleskin trousers and vest, black billycock hat, and watertight boots. It is feared some ill has befallen him. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell. Stafford, or to Sergeant Chaplain, Rugeley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, December 22. Committed for trial at the next assizes at Stafford, on a charge of burglary: THOMAS WILLIAMS, a miner, 25 years of age, 5 feet oh inchcs high, stout build, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, has a cut on left eyebrow, and left side of forehead ; dressed in old dark cloth jacket, old black cloth vest, old brown cloth trousers, brown rough cloth cap, and a pair of old elastic- side boots, much too large for him. He belongs to Yardley iu Warwickshire. Infor- mation to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford, or to Sergeant Chaplain, Rugeley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, December 22.
