C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably n « sssary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, al£ Letters addressed to the Editor HUH St Sie jsrepald, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Between ll'p. m. and 5 a. m. on the night of the 4th inst., some persons wilfully set fire to a hay stack at Hoyland Common, near Barnsley. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Svkes, Police Office, Barnsley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 8. INFORMATIONS. MU1BEE AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. The dead Body of a newly- born female Child was found in an entry at Railway Terrace West, at East Vale, near Longton, on the morning of the 9th ultimo. At the coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. A reward of ,£ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Govern- ment to any person who shall give such information and evidence as, shall lead to the conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Depart- ment will advise the grant of Her " Majesty gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given at any Police Station in the county of Stafford.— Bow- street, March 10. About 3 a. m. on the 15th January last, three men, having there faces blackened, and armed with guns, were detected night poaching in the game preserves of Sir. J. B. Bailey, Bart, M. P., near Dan- y- wern, in the parish of Langunider, Breconshire, and one of the men discharged a gun at George King, a gamekeeper, wounding him in the abdomen and causing his death. .£ 100 reward will be paid by Sir. J. B. Bailey, to any person who shall give such information and evidence, as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any person implicated in this offence, not being the actual murderer, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Breconshire, or to Superintendent Evans, Police Station, Crickhowell, Breconshire.— Bow- street, March 8. Charged on a warrant with having on the afternoon of the lst instant, murdered ( by stabbing) his mother- in- law, Margaret Goldie or Sic an, at 608, Gallowgate, Glasgow, also with having, at same time and place, assaulted and stabbed, to the danger of life, his wife, Margaret Sloan or Barr : THOMAS BARR, a book canvasser, a native of Glasgow, from 36 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, broad face, high cheek bones, nose flat at bridge, wide nostrils, dark swarthy complexion, black curly hair, of medium length, full black beard and moustache, black eye- brows, black staring eyes, round shouldered, and Btoops a little; dressed in a dark shooting coat, shepherd tartan trousers, double- breasted shep- herd tartan vest, all spotted with blood, black bonnet, and elastic- side boots. He wears two or three gold Rings on right band, one with a white stone, and had a silver Watch, gold Albert, and Locket. Immediately after committing the above offences, he purchased a pair of white canvas trousers, which he may now be wearing. He was an engineer, but for some time past has been hawking books aud stationery through- out the country. His mother resides at St. Peterhburgh, Russia, a lid the accused may endeavour to reach that country. Oil the 26th ult., the body of a newly- born female child was found in the Gloucester and Berkeley canal at Slimbridge, tied up in a brown paper bag. At the coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. Stolen from the person with violence, at Miles Platting, at 9 p. m. 5th instant : a gold lever Watch, flowered case, gold dial and fingers, second hands, No. 33515,' S. H.' engraved inside outer case, and inside the inner case is scratched ' 311 | J. K.', had attached a gold albert Chain, curb pattern, the cro3s- bar and seal broken off. £ 5 reward will be paid on recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from the person at Berwick- upon- Tweed during the hiring fair on 4th instant : a silver Geneva hunting Watch, white dial, chapters on case outside, hole in centre, maker ' Michael, Geneva,' No. 49577. Information to be given to Head Constable Garden, Berwick- upon- Tweed, Northumberland.— Bow- street, March 8. • Stolen from the person on the Race Course, Worcester, on the 25th instant: a silver lever hunting Watch, with silver dial, acd a representation of St. Paul's Church engraved thereon. Also stolen, on the previous day : a gold albert curb Chain, with Seal attached. He was seen going in the direction of Uttoxeter with the stolen carpet bag and a bundle. Stolen from a yard at Old Wood Barn Farm, Ingatestone, on the night of the 21st instant: a chestnut cart Mare, 10 years old, 17 hands high, a white blaze down the forehead, hind legs white half way up to the hocks, long mane and tail, and in good condition ; the property of Mr. Stephen Foreman, farmer, Ingatestone, who will give £ Z0 reward for such information a3 shall lead to the recovery of the mare and the conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen on the 29th ultimo from oustide the Horns public- house, Kennington .- a mouse- coloured cob Mare, 14 hands high, near hind foot white, scar inside near hind leg and on off hind fetlock, mane torn off in the centre, and 4 years old; a silver- plated Harness, no breechings: and a light spring Cart, green, picked out with light green, patent axle, brass caps, and the off side wing mended.— Metropolitan Police, L Division, March 3. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Description of a tramping sweep, charged with setting fire to a farm building, the property of Mr. John Baker, of Bodenham, Herefordshire, on the 6th instant : he is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, and has a small moustache ; he is accompanied by a woman, rather short and much pockmarked, and with turned- up nose, wearing a dark shawl and bonnet; she is fond of smoking. Information to be given to Superintendent Dykes, County Police, Leominster, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, March 10. BUEGIAET AiCJD HOUSE BREAKING. Description of three men who burglariously entered the dwelling- house of Mr. Henry Randall, No. 8, Park- place, Gravesend, between 12 and 1 a. m., on the 7th instant: GEOBGE BROWN, 46 years of age, 5 feet 2f inches high, fair complexion, auburn hair, grey eyes, bald on top of head, tuft of hair on chin ( sandy), small moustache, and whiskers shaved off; dressed in black short monkey jacket, black cloth vest, hard hat, and scar on shin bone. THOMAS SMITH, 32 years of age, 5 feet 2J inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, slight light moustache, whiskers ! shaved off, gold wires in his G^ rSj di female with cap in hand tattooed on right arm, a schooner on right hand, shamrock, | rose and thistle on left forearm and back of hand; dressed in short monkey jacket, striped woollen trousers and vest, blue striped woollen shirt, and glengary cap. The above men have been apprehended. The third man, who made his escape, is about 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, very dark complexion, and promi- nent nose; dressed in dark ulster coat with band, square top deer stalker hat, and light mixed trousers. Information to be given to Chief Constable Berry, Town Hall, Gravesend, Kent.— Bow- street, March 10. Charged with housebreaking and stealing ,£ 10 in Gold at Wirswall on the 18th ultimo : JANE WALL alias ETHEL JANE BERTHA BLANEY, alias JANE JONES, alias BEVANS, alias ELIZA, alias LIZZY, a prostitute ; she is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh com- plexion, stout figure, dark brown hair, very red face, coarse- looking, thick lips, stoops a little, and of slovenly gait; j dressed ; in dark brown dress, black shawl and black hat, turned up at side with a small puce feather ; is a native of j Shrewsbury and formerly a farm servant. Her photograph can be forwarded. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Saxton, County Police Station, Nantwich, Cheshire. — Bow- street, March 10. Stolen by means of house- breaking between 11 a. m. and 2 p. m. oti the lst instant, the property of Mr. Evan Hicks, Pont Hill, Bitton : an open face silver lever Watcb, No. 31496, the winding chain of the watch broken, no makers name on it. Information to be given to Superintendent Bawle, Fishponds, or to Sergeant Morley, Police Station, Oldland Common, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, March 8. Stolen by means of housebreaking, supposed by a tramp,, at Burfield, in the parish of Clun, Salop, between 5 a. m. and 9 p. m. on the 3rd instant, the property of John Evans: a light grey woollen Jacket, a pair of woollen cord Trousers, a woollen cord Yest, and a red and white spotted Handker- chief. Information to be given to Superintendent Caswell, Church Stretton, or to Sergeant Williams, Bishops Castle, Salop .- Bow- street, March 6. The house of Mr. George Prentley was broken into on the 2nd instant, between 1 and 330 p. m., and stolen therein : a pair of black cloth Trousers, lined with white calico ; a pair of grey check Trousers, with washleather pockets ; a Dress- piece, black ground with white spots; a black and scarlet wool Scarf; an old- fashioned Shawl; a calico Shirt with linen front, marked ' J. Nevill;' a black corded silk Necktie, with scarf Pin, white stone set in a bird's claw ; a Brussels Carpet Bag, of different colours ; and nine remnants of Cloth, different patterns. Description of a man who was seen about the house ; 28 or 30 years of age, 5 feet C or 7 inches high, LAStCBIf'Y AMD EMBEZZLEMENT. Charged with the theft of a, Piccolo, at Langholm, on the 7th ultimo : JOHN ROYAL, cooper, 40 years of age, 6 feet high, dark hair, swarthy complexion, long face, dark eyes, moustache, and billygoat whiskers ; dressed in brown velvet coat, green And blue tartan vest, white molesk'n trousers, blucher boots, and black soft felt hat. He is slightly pock- pitted, and has the appearance of being hunchbacked. The Piccolo is of black cocca wood, in two pieces, silver mounted, four keys in E flat, and has the makers' name ' Hawks and Co., London,' stamped on wood. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Dumfrieshire, Dumfries. — Bow- street, MarchTO. Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from a dwelling- house at Oldham : one gold Bing, set with a diamond ; one gold Ring, set with a garnet; one gold French Ring ; and one light colored mackintosh Overcoat,. By JAMES HENRY CHADWICK, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, auburn hair, sunken eyes, and long dark sandy beard ; dressed in a black rep cloth coat and veBt, light grey trousers, lace- up boots, very broad soles much worn, black and green speckled scarf, and black billycock hat. He served an apprenticeship to a grocer in Strefcford- road, Manchester, and has resided in Dewnbury and Castleford. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Oldham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 10. Description of GEORGE OLIVER, who is charged at Birmingham with stealing a Watch aud Chain from a house on the 4th instant: he is between 35 and 40 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair and whiskerp, and shave, d'under chin ; he is dressed like a stableman, and is likely to seek employment at livery bt ibles. Information to be given to Chief Constable Glossop, Birmingham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 10. Charged with stealing a quantity of Wearing Apparel, on the 28th ultimo, at Nantwich : ELIZA HANOVER, alias FOLLER, a prostitute, aud native of Norfolk; she is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 irches high, - sallow complexion, dark brown hair, and has a genteel appearanca ; dressed in a black jacket, black tunic, brown skirt, and black hat with violet rose on left side. Information to be given to Super- intendent Saxton, County Police Station, Nantwich, Cheshire. — Bow- street, March 10. Description of LAVINIA JANE HILL, who absconded from Wakefield, on the 26th ultimo, charged with stealing £ 16 in gold : she is supposed to be a native of Staffordshire, very short and slender, about 30 years of age, dark hair, cut very short, left eye discoloured from effects of a recent blow, has a habit of drawing her mouth to one side when speaking ; supposed to be dressed in dark bonnet, black cloth jacket, and light- coloured print dress ; she hawks peas in the evenings. She is supposed to be accompanied by a puddler, 26 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, thin, clean shaved face, hair inclined to be sandy ; dressed in dark cloth coat and vest, white moleskin trousers, wida brimmed black felt billycock hat, and lace- up boots, with brass eyelets. Information to be given to Chief Constable Chipstead, Borough Police Office, Wakefield, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street, March 10. Absconded from Pontypridd, by the 7 p. m. train, on the 28th ultimo, charged with stealing and . taking with him £ 500 in Gold and Silver, chiefly gold, the monies of Messrs. Spickett and Price, solicitors, his masters : GEORGE HURDEN, a clerk, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, pale face, dark brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, beard rather long and glossy, walks erect, and of smart appearance ; dressed in a grey suit, grey ulster coat, and brown bowler hat; he is a native of Bodmin, Cornwall, 4 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E . ' March 10 smokes very much, and generally carries a small staff. He left Cardiff by the 10- 15 p. m. train, on the 28th ultimo, for " Waterford, and was seen in Kilkenny on the 1st instant, where he left bis ulster coat at his lodgings, stating that he should stay a few days at seme quiet country village, but he will probably endeavour to emigrate. .£ 20 reward will be paid for his apprehension and conviction. Information to be giyen to Superintendent Matthews, Pontypridd, Glamorgan- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 10. Description of ALFRED FOWLER, charged with embezzlement, at Dogdyke : he is about 44 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, brown hair, light moustache, no whiskers, finger damaged, and has been in the army ; dressed in dark short coat, dark trousers, bro « n leggings, brown rough cap, and lace- up boots; he is likely to seek employ- ment with grocers and millers carts. A warrant is issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Jarvis, Police Station, Horncastle, Lincolnshire.— Bow Street, March 8. Stolen from the shop of William Walsh, at Stockton, on the 9th ultimo : 2 silver Geneva Watches. 1 silver verge Watch, engraved with lady and gentle- man at back. 1 lady's long gold Chain, belcher pattern. 1 18- carat gold Albert, curb pattern, stamped every link. 1 gold Seal, wheel shaped pattern, with compass. 2 lady's fancy gold Rings, set with stones, 15 carat, and other Rings. 54 yards of brown figured Dress Stuff. 1 scarlet and black wool Shirt. 1 plated Albert Guard, snake pattern, with key bar, yellow stone end. And several other Articles, which have been recovered. BY JAMES SIMPSON, alias JONES, alias THOMPSON, a hawker, and native of Cork, Ireland, from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, ginger whiskers, partly shaved down side of face, slender build, and 1 ad a recent cut above the right eye; dressed in a blue pilot coat, dark vest and trousers, black hard felt hat, black neckerchief, and elastic- side boots, and supposed to be wearing a rough dark cloth overcoat. Was discharged from Durham Prison on the morning of the robbery, having been committed from South Shields for larceny. He was seen in a public- house in Newcastle on the 15th ultimo. Charged on a warrant with larceny: HENRY J, CARLEY, late of 1, Forteseue Villa, South Beddington, Carshalton, late clerk to Messrs. Uthoff and Co., 147, Leaden- hall- street.; 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, pale com- plexion, black hair, whiskers, beard and moustache, and stout build ; dressed in light grey overcoat, dark clothes under- neath, high hat, and of respectable appearance. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police Office, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, March 6. Stolen on the 28th ultimo, between 9 p. m. and 7 a. m., from Mr. Robert Gilbert, cartman, of Hessle : one black pilot cloth Top- coat, velvet collar, double breasted, black horn buttons, two pockets outside and one inside breast pocket, containing a number of unpaid bills; one Scotch tweed Jacket, black horn buttons, two pockets outside and one inside, and drab lining. By a man who has absconded from Mr. Gilbert's service, about 22 years of age, brown hair, fresh complexion, and stout figure ; dressed in striped fustian vest, cord trousers, strong laced boots, and ' sou- wester' or billycock bat. Information to be given to Superintendent Ellerker, Welton, Yorkshire.— Bow- sireet, March 6. Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from a house in Preston : an Opera Glass with black frame. By a man who lodged in the house on the previous night, and has absconded; about 22 yesrs of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion and mous- tache ; dressed in a dark suit and billycock hat. Information to be given to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 6. Stolen from the Marine Barracks, Chatham, on the 1st instant: two silver dessert Spoons, plain ; a silver toddy Ladle, twisted handle, marked ' F. L.' in Old English in the bowls; a pair of plated Nut- crackers; two brown tweed Coats, one double- breasted and Vest to match ; a black cloth Vest; a shirt Front, marked ' F. Sean;' a white shirt Collar; a black silk Scarf, knitted in front; a black pot Hat; a pair of bedford cord Trousers ; and a pair of brown tweed ditto, fine quality. By a deserter, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, b<- own hair, grey eyes, and dressed in the stolen clothes. Information to be given to Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, March 6. Stolen from 17, Milton- street, Dorset- square : 5 £ 100 Portuguese 3 per cent. Bonds, Nos. 194432, 246027, 252490, 252491, and 252492 ; a large old- fashioned blue enamelled Watch, rose diamonds in centre of back, enclosed in a glass case ; a moss- agate Ring, set round with rubies ; au old gold Weddine Ring ; a fancy black and gold Ring, set round with hair ; and 4 old gold Turkish Coins. By a man, 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, light hair and moustache : dressed in a drab tourist suit and black billy- cock hat.— Metropolitan Folice, D Division, March 6. Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from Pease Cottage, Slaugham, Sussex, the property of George Gard, post master : 168 Postage Stamps. By GEORGE NEWMAN, about 45 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh com- plexion, dark hair, and few whiskers, is a well sinker, and has been employed at 4, Bond- court, City. His wife is living at 32, Marion- square, Pritchard's- place, Hoxton, Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office. Lewes, or to Superintendent Pocock, Cuckfield, Sussex, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 3. Description of WILLIAM HOUGH, alias MOTT- RAM, a labourer, who absconded from Wheelook on the 28th ultimo, charged with stealing : one pair of Blankets, one Sheet-, and one Pillow- case; the property of Jonathan Norbury. He is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair and complexion; dressed in a white slop, cord trousers, black hat, and strong boots. He is accompanied by Norbury's wife, and they are supposed to have gone to the north of England. Information to be given to Superintendent Roubottom, Constabulary Station, Middlewich, or to Inspector H- jlme, Constabulary Station, Sandbach, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 3. Absconded on the 23rd ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 60; THOMAS LAYTON, ( late of 11, Ray- street, Clerkonwell,") 18 or 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, light hair, fair oomplexion, rather long face, and heavy eyes, Biini build; dressed in long brown coat, and black billycock hat. Supposed to bo accompanied by his mother, two younger brothers, and two younger sisters. Description of WILLTAM CLEAR, a page, charged on a warrant with stealing two £ 5 Notes and £ 4 6s. 10d., be- longing to his mistress, Miss Bell, of Brighton : he is about 16 years of age, rather stoutly built, dark hair and eyes, and round rosy face; dressed in a dark blue pea jacket, shabby dark grey striped trousers, black felt wide- awake, and black leggings or long gaiters. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton. Sussex.— Bow- street, March 1. Stolen from the schooner, ' City of Chester,' lying in the River Thames, off Cliffe, Kent, on the 28th ultimo : a silver lever Watch, maker's name'Paul Price, Chester';-' Samuel Hughes, Connah's Quay, 1874,' engraved on inside caBe, with a- silver Guard attached ; andj £ 15 10s. in cash. By a man about 18 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark brown hair, very few light whiskers, and sore eyes ; dressed in duck jumper or slop, brown cloth trousers ( patched on knees), blue liannel shirt, cheesecutter cap, and blucher boots.
