Absconded on the 9th instant, charged on a warrant with forging and uttering a Bauk Cheque for £ 4,800, ALEX. MARTIN, a stockbroker's clerk : 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout build, brown hair ( parted in centre and bushy behind), grey eyes, fair complexion, small light moustache, and very thick thumbs with short nails ; dressed in a dark brown and grey broken- check rough tweed coat and vest, rough chesterfield overcoat, and low- crowned felt bat; he wears a gold albart and plain gold finger ring, with a horse engraved on it ; is a native of Glasgow, and has a gentlemanly appearance. It is supposed he will endeavour to leave the country. Information to be given to Chief Constable M'Call, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.- Bow- street, De- cember 15. old, 15 hands high, long coat, white sta? ou forehead, cut on near fore fetlock joint, broken tooth in right of upper jaw, and a single headed Bridle and Bit, too small for the horse. — Metropolitan Police, Woolwich Divisisn, Dectinber 15. Sound about the 4th instant, and supposed stolen : a blaek Colt, rising 2 years old, aud a bay Pony, aged, about 12 iands high, and lame on off fore leg. Information to bs oiven to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Christie, County Constabulary Office, Newport, Salop.— Bow- street, December 15. larceny and embezzlement NOTICE. December 27 being a Bank Holiday, the Police Gazette " will be published on Tuesday, December 28. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. About 4 p. m. on the 3rd instant, the dead Body of a jiewly- born male Child was found near a lodge in a mill- yard iu Bolton ; at the coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. The body was wrapped in a portion of a woman's drabbet chemise, about half a yard square, clean and of good material, over which was a piece of glazed brown paper, tied with shreds of calico. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who will give such in- formation and evidence as shall lead to the conviction of the murderer or muiderers, and Mr. Secretary Cross will adviie the graut of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who will give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton- le Moors, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 24. At 7 a. m. on -. iie 19th instant, the dead Body of a newly born male Child, full grown ( supposed to have been dead five or six hours), was found in a field adjoining the towing- path of the Grand Junction Canal, in the parish or township of Water Eton. At the coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown,' was returned. Information to bo given to Superintendent Hedley, Police Station, Fenny Stratford, Bucks.— Bow- street, December 22. Absconded on the 7th instant, charged with stabbing: a youth, IS years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, hair, and eyes ; dressed in grey overcoat, dark suit, hard black felt hat, a cabinet maker.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, December 15. On the 5th instant, about 4 p. m , the dead body of a newly born male infant was fouud on the ice in a pool, by the road side, at Hartlebury. At the coroner's inquest, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person unknown' was returned. Information to be given to Superintendent Raby, Great Witley, or to Sergeant Ganderton, Stourport, Worces- tershire.— Bow- street, December 10. burglary and house breaking. Stolen on the night of the 7th instant, by means of housebreaking, from the cottage of Samuel Smith, of Debenbam : ten £ 5 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 94095 ( 29th June, 1875), 45867 ( 23rd June. 1875), 91403 ( 28th July, 1875), 68664 ( 26th August, 1875), 80516 ( 30th August, 1875), 55498 ( 26th May, 1875), 41693 ( 24th July, 1875), 56425 ( 25th August, 1875), 49934 ( I4tli November, 1874), and 39521 ( 30th August, 1875), and £ 30 in Gold. A reward of £ o will be given to any person giving information to either Debenham or Framlingham Police Stations, Suffolk, which will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in pro- portion thereto.— Bow- street, December 20. During the night of the 8th instant the dwelling- house of Mr. William Dodgson, of Tushingham, Cheshire, was broken and entered and stolen thereiu : a mahogany Tea Caddy, which has been converted into a missionary box with three compartments, labelled ' Christianity amongst the Jews,' ' Church Missionary Society,' ' Sunday School Society for Ireland,' with a text of scripture under each. The Box contained about 5s. and some Coppers, several Receipts and Papers, and a small red worsted Glove. Two men and a woman are suspected from the footmarks. Information to be given to Superintendent Wilson, Tattenhall, or to Ser- geant Powell, Malpas, Cheshire.— Bovr street, December 15. arson and wiilful burning. On the night of the 11th instant, two stacks of Barley Straw, the property of George Henry Jackson, of Farlington, were burnt and destroyed, supposed by an incendiary. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Hunter, Heworth, or to Inspector Ellerby, Easingwold, North Ridijg of Yorkshire. Bov:- street, December 20. forgery. Description of a Frenchman, giving the name of ALPHONSE BONNEAU, charged on a warrant with obtaining £ 120 by a forged Bill of Lading, at Portsmouth ; from 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, rather bald on top ® f head, large rdoustache, and no whiskers; dressed in brown overcoat, billycock hat, and wearing an open white shirt front. He calls upon large buyers of corn, and has Bills of Lading for cargoes of wheat, beans, & c. ; he represents the vessels to be en route from a port in the North of France, to wait orders at Falmouth, and requires an ad- vance to purchase coals for the vess^ to take back from South Wales, and also stays at Temperance or Private Hotels, and speaks very little English. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jervis, Portsmouth.— Bow- street, December 22. horse and cattle stealing. Description of ROBERT GRANT, labourer, a native of Downham, near Lynn, Norfolk, charged with stealing a Horse and Tracing Harness on the 14th instant ( since re- covered) : about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair turning grey, grey eyes, small sandy whiskers, broken nose, cut mark in corner of left eye, rather deaf, and speaks the Norfolk dialect; dressed in an old grey i mixture suit. Information to be given to Captain Ormsby, West Riding Constabulary Office, Halifax, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Diccmber 24. Stolen at Frindsbury, during the night of the 21st iust. : a Kent Lamb, marked ' W. E.' in red paint. Information to be given to Superintendent Coppinger, Chatham, Kent.— Bow- street, December 24. Found at Stoke, next Guildford, on the 19th instant I ( supposed to have been stolen) : a light bay Horse, about ' 14| hands high, in good condition, - without shoes, and feet worn down. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Cox- stible Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bote- street, December 24. Supposed stolen about the Cth instant, from a field at Gom's Mill, near Longtonj: a bright bay Colt about 16 hands high, 3 years old. Any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive a reward of six guineas from the Longton Association for the Prosecutirn of Felons, and six guineas from Messrs. Holland aud Greeu, manufacturers, Longton. Information to be given to Super- intendent McWilliams, Police Station, Longton, or to Messrs. Clarke and Hawley, Solicitors and Treasurers to the Longton Association for the Prosecution of Felons.— Bow- street, December 24. Stolen from Rheidhowell, in the parish of Llandinam, during the last month : a bay Pony in foal, rising 3 years old, about 12 hands high, white star on forehead, spittle mark under the near ear, a thumb notch above, and the off ear cropped; and a cream- coloured entire Pony, white face, rising 3 years old, about II hands high, and spittle mark under each ear. If stolen, £ 10 reward will be paid on the appre- hension and conviction of the offenders aud recovery of the ponies. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Newton, or to Police Constable Pearson, Car raws, Montgomeryshire.— Evw- slreet, December 22. Stolen from a stable in Pemberton, during the night of the 14th instant : a chestnut Horse, aged, about 15 hands high, white feet, white Btripe from the forehead to the nose, and rather weak in the fore knees. £ 1 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension aud conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen during the night of the 10th instant, from au officer's stable, at Aldershot Camp : a black Mare, 3 years Stolen from a garden hedge at Hunger- street, Wigjaore, on the 20th inBtant: a white calico Shirt, cloth colhr and wristbands, the property of George Higgins. By a tramp, 50 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light complexiwi, light sandy hair and whiskers, one hand injured, walis lame ; dressed in a brown oord jacket, cord trousers, jiiacrow hat, and old strong boots; he speaks with a Welsh accant, and is supposed to have gone to^ Breconshire or Radnorshire. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Dykes, Police Station, Leominster, or to P. S. Philpotts, Police Station, Wigmore, Herefordshire.- Bow- street, December 24. Description of JAMES CUNNINGHAM, char& edwith stealing fouT Pheasants and a Partridge, from William Kearton, of Richmond, on the 4th instant : he is 28 years o£ age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, light whiskers sides of face and under chin, thick lips, large mouth, and proportionate figure ; dressed in dark cloth suit, black billycock hat, and strong nailed boots Information to be given to Head Constable Camfield, Richmond, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, Dtcemler 24. The man described in the Police Gazette of the 17th instant, charged with stealing Tools at Faringdon, has been apprehended in Cheltenham ; he gives his name as ALBERT LAKE, a native of Exeter, and states that he has been working in Birmingham. Information to be given to Super- intendent Reece, Faringdon, Berks.— Bow- street, December 22. Absconded: JOSEPH JAMES WILKINS, charged j with stealing £ 13 9s., belonging to his master Mr. Potts, music- seller, of North- street, Brighton ; is a genteel- looking 1 lad, about 15 years of age, right ear deformed, and dark ! complexion; dressed in dark clothes and billycock hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, who has a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Dee. 22. Description of THOMAS TEASDALE, a labourer and native of Cumberland, who absconded from Penrith, on the 16th instant, charged on a warrant with obtaining a new pair of Boots by false pretences : about 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slender figure, fair hair, small light whiskers, pale complexion, and has marks of king's evil under one ear ; dressed iu new drab cord trousers, new moleskiu waistcoat, check kirtle, and cap, with peak. He took with him a suit of new dark check tweed clothes. He may be found working upon a railway or other public works. Information to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle,— Bw- I street, December 22. Description of WILLIAM HARBIRD, of Richmond, Surrey, milkman, charged on a warrant with embezzling ! several sums of Money of his employers : he is 20 years of ! age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, short light hair, small light whiskers, fair complexion, full fresh face ; dressed in cord | jacket and trousers, tweed vest, had also a blue pilot jacket 1 ( faded) Information to be given to Superintendent Dobson, i Springfield, Chelmsford, Essex, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 20. Description of three men charged with stealing, about 5 p. m. on the 15th instant, from a cashbox iu the bar at the White Hart public- house, St. Alban's, two Sovereigns, six Half- sovereigns, several Sixpences, a Cash Book, au Inventory of furniture, with the name of ' Passingham,' and an Agree- ment of the White Hart public- house : One, 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, slight moustache. Another, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair, fresh complexion, neat black moustache, aud has lost a front tooth in upper jaw. The other, 33 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, daik complexion, red face, rather high cheekbones, no whiskers or moujtache. They are dressed in dark clothes and black felt hats ; they drove into the town from the Barnet- road with a dark ii on- grey cob and a Stanhope or Dennet gig, and took the Barnet- road back the same evening ; they were at the White Hart on the previous day, and left by the 7' 40 Great Northern traiu for London. Information to be given to the Head Constable, St. Alban's, Herts.— Bow- street, December 20. Description of CHARLES MOY, charged on a warrant with stealing on the 2ud instant : a linen Bag, and 12s., the property of Harry Ironman, at Hoton, Leicestershire : lie is 28 or 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark brown hair, meeting under the chin, slender make, very small nose, the lower part eaten by disease ; he is a painter, aud says he is a native of Finchley Common, Middlesex ; dressed iu old black cloth clothes, much worn, and black stiff felt hat. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Peberdy, Lough- borough, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, Veccmbsr 20. 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. December 24. Description of JOHN CHELL, alias HARRIS, who is charged on a warrant with stealing Straw, at Chatteris : he is about 40 years of age, about 6 feet 5 inches high, stiff build, rather stout, dark complexion and hair, dark whiskers round his face, very dark peculiar eyes, swings his right arm and leg, and looks on the ground when walking ; he is a great drinker of whiskey, and has lived at Longton, Stafford- shire ; he has been lodging at a beer- house in Chatteris, for some months past, excepting at short intervals, aud has bought large quantities of Straw and some Hay in that neighbourhood. Information to be given to Inspector Mitchell, Chatteris, Cambs.— Bow- street, December 20. Absconded from Honey- street Wharf, Marlborough, Wilts, on the 5th instant, charged with embezzling a huge sum of money : CHARLES HERBERT ROGERS, a clerk in the employ of Messrs. liobbins, Lane, and Pinniger, 19 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light brown hair, pale face, prominent nose, slight build, respectable looking, talks through his nose ; dressed in dark mixture suit; he has been apprentice to a Liverpool ship owner, and has been to South America on a voyage of about 18 months. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretten, Wilts Con- stabulary, Marlborough, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Boic- street December 20. Description of EDWARD GLOVER, charged with stealing, at Wellington, on the 30th ultimo, a quantity of Walnuts, the property of his masters, the London and North Western and Great Western Railway Companies : he is a railway porter, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair, eyes, and complexion, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in dark suit of clothes. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, • Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Dec. 20. Absconded from Pilsley, on the 10th instant, charged with stealing twenty tame Pigeons ( since recovered) : JOHN FARMER, a collier, and a native of Nottingham ( whefe his father keeps a public- house), 21 years of age, 5 feet inches high, light sandy hair, brown eyes, ' C. J.' and sickle outside right forearm, and ' F.' outside left forearm. He was dis- charged from Leicester County Ga. ol on the 1st Sept., 1875, after serving six months for shopbreaking. Information to be given to Superintendent Coope, County Polic, e Station, Alfrtton, Derbyshire, who holds the warrant for his appre- sion.— Bow- street, December 20. Description of a man charged in Ripon with embezzle- ment, who absconded on the 11th instant: he is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches higb, sore eyes, an impe- diment in speech, has lost the ends of three fingers of right hand, dark brown moustache, no whiskers ; was employed as lamp trimmer for the last six weeks with Mrs. Edmunds, Wombwell's Menagerie, and previously with Footit's circus. He is also suspected of having stolen from the above- named menagerie, on the same date : a light- coloured mackintosh Coat, has a pocket on right side, and has only one light bone button on ; two pairs of Boots, one pair with black fronts and elastic sides, nearly new, the other elastic sides, with plain toecaps ; also a light tweed monkey Jacket, brown velvet collar, two pockets on right side, and one on left. Information to be given to nead Constable Metcalfe, City Police Office, Ripon, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 17. Charged with stealing a Post Letter, recovered, on tho 10th ultimo, at Durham : HENRY CHUDLEY, a postman, a native of Sandford, near Crediton, Devonshire, about 32 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, shaved on chin, much addicted to drink ; dressed in a uniform as a rural postman, has been a schoolmaster and a grocer's porter ; has testimonials in his possession from persons in Durham and neighbourhood. Information to be given to Head Constable Dodds, City Police Office, Durham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Decernber 17. Further information respecting the robbery committed at Bradford- on- Avon on the 6th, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 8th ultimo : the offence was committed by a man named CHARLES BRITTAIN, who is 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, and of fresh complexion ; lie has committed similar offences in other towns in, the West of England. Information to be given to Inspector Maggs, Wilts Consta- bulary, Bradford- cn- Avon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 17. Escaped from Kilmersdon Police Station, on the 11th instant, charged on a warrant with larceny : GEORGE GOULD, of Midsomer Norton, a labourer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, very dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, of very dirty appearance ; dressed iu old dirty slop, cord trousers, very old ; has the appearance of a low tramp. Information to be given to Superintendent Deggar, Frome, or to Sergeant Edmonds, Kilmersdon, near Bath, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow street, December 17. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Ashton- under- Lyne, on the 11th instant : a peach coloured Cloak, Tippet attached ; a black twilled Skirt, with two flounces; two flannel Petticoats, one white, with five tucks, one reel ; a peach and white striped Petticoat., has one deep flounce, bound with peach braid ; a large twill Sheet ; and a pair of Clogs. By a female lodger, about 20 years of age, 5 feet high, dark brown hair, and slender build. She may seek work at cotton mills. Information to be given to Chief Constable Dalgliesh, Town Hall, Ashton- under- Lyne, Lancashire.— Bow- street, Decem- ber 17. ISAAC WILLIAMS, against whom a true bill was found at the last Brecknockshire Quarter Sessions, charged with stealing two copper Ingots, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 3rd ultimo, is still at large. An additional reward of £ o will be paid by his sureties if apprehended before the next Brecknockshire Quarter Sessions. Informa- tion to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Price, Brecon, or to Sergeant Jones, Yntradgunlais, Swansea Valley, who holds a warrant for hia apprehension.— Bow- stree', December 17. Stolen from a dwelling- houBe at Wigan on the night of the 4th September last: a single plaid woollen Shawl, black, white, puce, and grey plaid, nearly new ; a double- breasted dark tweed Coat, with long skirts, two pockets outside with flaps, and one inside left breast; a single- breasted black cloth shooting Coat, two pockets outside aud one inside left breast, lined with black alpaca; a double- breasted dark cloth Vest, torn at one side ; a pair of dark tweed Trousers, fall fronts, lined throughout with white calico ; a pair of men's elastic- side Boots; and a magenta and white silk Pocket- handkerchief. By FRANCIS TAFE, who lodged at the house two nights : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches higb, dark curly hair cut short, no whiskers or moustache, long and pale face; dressed in black billycock hat, old black cloth shooting coat, grey tweed trousers, and low shoes ; frequents public- houses, dancing and singing for a living. Also stolen, on the afternoon of the 20th ultimo, from a dwelling- house in Wigan : a puce stuff Dress, old- fashioned, torn in the body ; a black silk Dress, new, with puffings on breast; a white flannel Petticoat; a white twill calico Skirt; two bleached calico Skirt; a black and red plaid woollen Shawl; a maroon woollen Jacket, with puce border ; and a pair of women's elastic- side Boots. By JANE MARROW, who lodged in the house about a week, aud left about 6 30 p. m. on the 20th ultimo : she is 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, full face, fresh complexion, black hair, slightly pockpitted ; dressed in black bonnet, black cloth jacket, light winsey skirt, and elastic- side boots ; she has with her a female child about 2 years of age, light com- plexion, light curly hair ; dressed in black velvet jacket, light cotton frock, straw hat with blue and white ribbon round, and red leather boots ; she states that she came from Manchester. Information to be given to Chief Constable Williams, Wigan, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 15. Absconded from Hednesford, on the 11th instant, charged with stealing a Sovereign : JOHN CUNIFF, Irish labourer, 24 years of age, 5 feet 11 ins. high, proportionately built, fresh complexion, round features, rather long nose, light brown hair, and slight whiskers ; dressed in a short blue pilot jaoket, blue cloth trousers, dirty soft white billy- cock hat, much turned up at sides, and strong lace- up boots. He is very erect, of smart appearance, and is now supposed to be making his way to Ireland. Information to be given to Superintendent Hill, Police Station, Brownhills, near Walsall, or to Police Constable Cockerel!, Police Station, Hednesfoid, near Stafford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 15. felonies. ( Not otherwise described). Description of two men who have absconded, charged with rape at Ince, on the 28th ultimo ( with two other men, who were each sentenced to 10 years penal servitude on the 13th instant, at the Liverpool Assizes) : one is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, no whiskers, a little in- kneed, and walks rather lame. The other is about 19 years of age ( but looks older), 5 feet high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, aud pockpitted. They are colliers, and natives of Hindley. Information to be given to Sergeant Cocker, Pemberton, near Wigan, Lanca- shire.— Bow- street, December 20.
