C. *,* " Whenever it is desired that auy person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and aworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with tho Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise tl. o insertion will not be made, The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on " War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. About 12 30 p. m. on the 16th instant, the body of a male child was found in the Calder and hebble Canal, near Thornes Flood Gates, in the township of Alverthorpe- with- Thornes, the body was wrapped in part of an old cotton chemise, and part of an old quilted scarlet flannel Petticoat, with about 5 inches broad, and 5 feet iu length, of black merino round the bottom, aud tied tightly rouud with about 6 yards of narrow black braid. The body appears to have been in the water three or four weeks, and supposed to have come down the river some distance. The child appears to have been born alive, and to have lived from £ an hour to an hour, aud death was caused by suffocation. At the coroner's inquest, a verdict of ' Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, Wakefield, Yorkshire.— Law- street, April 21. FORGERY. Description of a man who, under the pretence of pur- chasing a pianoforte, tendered a forged cheque for £ 50, and received a Cheque for £ 24 as the balance, from a pianoforte seller iu Cambridge : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, full face, sallow complexion, dark whiskers round the chin, no moustache ; dressed in dark clothes, black silk hat, and white tie ; represented himself as a clergyman ; he is supposed to be the same person as described in the Police Gazette of the 27th ultimo, as charged with a similar offence at Great Yarmouth. Information to bs given to Head Constable Turrall, Borough Police Office, Cambridge. — Bow street, April 23. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen during the night of the 2lst instant, by means of shop breaking, in Overton, Flintshire : a large siz^ d Bass ; two Ploughs and Bits ; Braces and Bits ; bead Planes ; a mortise Guage ; several Chisels ; a tenon Saw ; aud spring Bits. Information to be given to Superintendent Bolton, Hanmer, Whitchurch, Salop.— Bow- street, April 23. On the 17th instant between 1 and 5.30 p. m, the ' Woodman' beerhouse, in the parish of Claverley, was entered by means of pick lock keys, and stolen therein : a large silver verge Watch, No. 4419 ; a pinch back Watch, a gold albert Chain with Seal and Key attached ; a silver- Watch Guard, curb pattern ; a plaited wove Guard ; two pairs of gold Ear- rings; a silver Thimble ; a small gold Brooch, Staffordshire knot pattern ; the property of Selina Brazier. A cottage at Long Common, parish of Claverley, was entered by the same means, and £ 3 iu Gold, 17s. in Silver ; aud two gold Wedding Rings, stolen between 12 30 aud 7 p. m. on the 17th instant, the property of Edward Elcock. On the 17th instant, between 1 and 7 p. m., the dwelling- house of Theophilus Pritchard, was entered by the same means, at Budge Heath, iu the parish of Claverley, and a largo silver verge Watch, maker George Bridgnorth, with steel Chain and common Seals attached, stolen. Supposed by two men : one about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, very thin make, sallow complexion, and dark hair ; dressed in black dress coat, tweed trousers, and hard rouud hat. The other about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, stout make, light sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache, aud clean shaved chin ; dressed in dark coat, tweed trousers, and billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Police Constable ( 36) Brew, Claverley, Salop.— Bow- street, April 21. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Kuipton, on the 15th instant, the property of Matthew Clayton : four £ 5 Notes, Grantham Bank ; a Sovereign ; a Half Sovereign ; three Florins ; a silver lever hunting Watch, No. 7575 R, ' F. C.' ou front of case; a Turkey red aud white cottou Pocket handkerchief ; and a pocket Book, with black cover. On the same day, the dwelling- house of Elizabeth Parks, at Knipton, was also broken and entered, and stolen therein : two old- fashioned pair- cased silver verge Watches, one has ' C. H.' engraved on back of outer case, steel curb Chain, very small silver Coin, aud two common Keys attached, the other maker's name Juo. ThomptoK, No. 4078, long hand off, and two common Keys attached ; a plaiu gold wedding Riug, worn very thin, and broken through iu one place; a very small silver Seal, with a bird engraved upon it; a Half- crown ; and a Sixpence. Three men are charged with the above offence, two of whom are in custody, aud remanded till the 26th instant, namely : GEORGE SHAW, 30 years of age, a hawker, of New Rad- ford, and HENRY ANDERTON, alias SWIFT, alias DRUMMER, fish and fruit hawker, Nottingham, 28 years of age ; the other mau named JOHN ROBERTS, of Cooper- street, Nottingham, has absconded : he is about 3S years of 5 feet 8 or 9 iuches high, rather stout make, fresh com 1 sealskin Mantle, trimmed witk beaver satinet, 20 ins. deep. 2 black astracan Jackets, black fringe at the bottom, lined with black quilted silk. 1 mock sealskin Jacket, trimmed with mock beaver Batinet, lined. 4 Sealskins, about 30 inches long. 3 Sealskins, about 55 inches long. 1 seal Set, for jacket trimmings, about 8 inches deep. 2 beaver Sets, 9 inches deep, with large cuffs. 5 beaver Skins. 4 seal Vesta, not made up. 1 beaver Vest. 2 astracan Vests. 1 mock seal Vest. 1 Miluer's Box, No. 139,720. The mantles were marked ' H. F. & W. & c.,' ' S. S. & N.,' ' G. C. & c.' or ' G. G. & S.,' aud ' B. S. & II.,' ! H. F.,' or ' B. S. II.' £ 20 reward will be paid by the owner of the shop for such information as shall lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders aud recovery of the property, or in pro- portion to the amouut recovered. Stolen on the " tli instant, about 3 p. m., from a cottage at Batheaston, by means of housebreaking : a rough blue clotli Overcoat, double- breasted, two pockets on the outside with flaps, and one inside, red and blue plaid lining ; a black Coat; two Vests ; a pair of Trousers; and a red cotton Haudkerchief. By a mau, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, small whiskers, dark complexion, and rather stoutly built ; dressed iu soft bowler hat, short dirty slop, aud light fustian trousers. All the stolen Articles ( except the overcoat, which he is supposed to be wearing) have been recovered. Between 7 30 p. m. 9th and 8' 30 a. m. on the 10th instant, the premises of Mr. Oliver Young, watchmaker and jeweller, 27, Sandhill, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, were broken and entered, and stolen therein : 500 gold Brocches, coloured and bright, various sizes and patterns. E00 silver Brooches, various sizes and patterns. 1000 pairs of gold Ear- rings, various sizes aud patterns. 100 gold Keeper Rings. 100 sets of gold Studs, various patterns. 6 large gold Medals, shield pattern. 3 gold Bracelets. 1 dozen gold Lockets. 1 gentleman's gold Buckle Ring, with piece of diamond shaped platiua inside. 6 dozen silver Thimbles, various sizes. 4 silver Snuff Boxe.% one large, three small. 1 silver gilt cupid Barrow. 6 dozen silver Poucil- cases. Several gold Pencil- cases. Aud various other articles of Jewellery. £ 50 reward will be paid by Mr. Young for such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders aud recovery of the property, or in ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on the 16th instant, from the person of a lady, on entering a first class carriage, at the London, Chatham, and Dover Railway platfoim, Canterbury, at 4- 40 p m. : a seal- skin Purse, containing £ 6 in Gold, and some Silver : the purse was picked up shortly after the train left Canterbury on the line, empty. Also stolen from the person of Mrs. Kennett, in the same train, between Adisham and Dover : a Purse. A man of middle height, fair' hair, inclined to be red, and small moustache ; dressed in cutaway coat, billycock hat, and carrying a hat box or parcel in his hand is suspected. Description of EDWARD TINSLEY, a chainmaker, late of Cradley neath, in the parish of Rowley regis, Staffordshire, who is charged with highway robbery at Cradley Heath, on the 3rd inst. : he is 27 years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, light complexion, light hair, little or no whiskers, and Blender build ; dressed in very old dark clothes, much worn, and very dirty and ragged. He is supposed to have gone to the Staffordshire potteries to seek employment at a chain manufactory. Information to be given to Inspector Price, Police Station, Old Hill, Dudley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow street, ApHl 19. Description of two men charged with highway robbery at Bungay, on the night of the 21st ultimo: FREE HARPER, alias HARBER, of Brooke, Norfolk, labourer, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh com- plexion, and dark hair ; dressed iu a brown worsted vest, dark trousers, and cloth cap, with French peak. Stolen on the 19tli instant, from Lester's Livery Stables, Western- road, St. Leonards- on- the- Sea : a pair of iron- grey Ponies, mare and gelding, about 12 hands high ; and a small park Phaeton, with seat at back, painted blue, picked out with yellow, maker Beany ; and a set of small elouble Harness. By a youth about 17 years of age, rather shait, fair com- plexion, and light hair ; dressed iu a dark mixture suit and high hat; who hired the same for a drive ou the afternoon of the day above mentioned, and has not since been heard of. It is requested that enquiry may be made livery stables, horse dealers, carriage brokers, & c. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension of the offender and recovery of the property, to the Superintendent of Police, Town Hall, Hastings, Sussex. — Bow- street, April 23. Description of a man named GEORGE ARTHUR RAYMOND, alias ARTHUR OXLEY, who is charged with stealing a Horse, Saddle, and Bridle ( of which be was a bailee), on the 5th inst. : he is 19 to 21 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fair complexion, round face, good looking, and of good address. He stated that his father was a clergy- man ; was last seeu at Leicester, where he sold the horse, saddle, aod bridle. Stolen from a field near Aberdare, during the night of the 16th inst., a dark brown filly Pony, 2 years old, between 10 and 11 hands high, long tail, not shod, one white heel, and in good condition ; the property of Mr. E Jones, surgeon. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Thomas, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, April 19. Stolen : a dark brown horse Pony, about 11 hands high, aged, two white hocks, star on forehead, and has the spring halt in bind legs. Also at the same time : a small village Cart and Harness. By a youth, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 oi 6 inches high, sallow complexion, rather long thin face, dark hair, inclined to curl, no whiskers ; dressed in a pepper- and- salt overcoat, soft brown felt hat, blue necktie, heavy lace up shoes, and had the appearance of being a draper's assistant ; he went to Mr. George Wattson's yard in Broad- street, Ran^ M* te, on the 10th instant, about noon, and hiind the pony < Au cart to go to Herne Bay ; he was seen at Sturry at 3 30 p. m. on the same day. going towards Canterbury. Stolen on the 13th instant, from a stable iu Grove- road, Hackney : a dark bay Mare, 15 hands high, whife or fore- head, two scars on off side, a little hair rubbed off fore off leg, in good condition.— Metropolitan Folice, N Division, April 16. Description of a man who was entrusted with a brown mare Cob ( aged, 13| hands high, small white speck on fore- head, short tail, large head and ears, in good condition, and fore legs clipped) to take from Sittingbourne to Minster Sheppy on the 13th instant, and has not since been heard of : about 24 years o! age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, f- eah com- plexion, cheesecntter cap, black coat, and old light shoes. Information to be given to Superintendent; Ellis, Welshpool, or to P. C. Thomas, Buttington, near " Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, April 14. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of DAVID BROWN, clock case maker, charged on a warrant with larceny ( property recovered) : he is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, ligtit complexion, clean shaved, medium build ; dresstil in bkek coat and vest, drab cord trousers, and felt hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Henderson, Leeds, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, April 23. Stolen from the barracks at Coventry, on the ISth inst. : a gold Geneva hunting Watch, enamelled dial, an anchor and monogram ' A. J. R.,' with motto ' Spero Meliora' on back of inner case, a massive gold curb Chain attached ; also a £ f> Bank of England Note and about £ 6 in Gold. By a private in the Royal Horse Artilley, employed as an officer's servaut, who absconded o.- » the same day : he is 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, brown hair, no whiskers, rather stout, good- looking ; dressed iu a dark suit, hard billycock hat, and regimental boots, and had the appearance of a groom. A photograph may be had on application. Information to be given to Chief Constable Norris, City Police Office, Coventry, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, April 23. Absconded from Oldbury on the 30tli ultimo, charged with stealing £ 1 Is., the moneys of his master : JOHN BRIGHT, alias SMITH, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, black eyes, hair, and moustache, dark complexion, walks with a slovenly gait, and states he is a farm labourer, and comes from Lincolnshire; dressed iu double- breasted pilot coat, moleskin trousers, black vest, and Scotch cap, with yellow silk worked iu the baud. Information to be given to Superintendent Kemp, Halesowen, near Birmingham, who holds a warrant for hi* apprehension.— Bow- street, A pi il 23. Absconded from Shrewsbury, on the 14th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing an iron Brace ( since recovered) : JOHN DONALD, about 21 years of age. ti feet high, fresh complexion, long features", and dark hair ; dressed in moleskin trousers and veit, black coat, and black billy- cock hat. He will probably seek employment as a striker. Information to be giveu to Head Constable Davies, Borough Police Office, Shrewsbury, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow street, April 21. Stolen on the 20th instant, from St. Leonards- on- Sea : a black Cashmere Mantle, braided nearly all over with black mohair braid, and a light- grey barege Costume with three llonnces at back, trimmed with dark blue silk. B_ v a woman who said she wc-. s the wife of a solicitor at Watford, about 37 years of age, short and stout, dark complexion and hair : dressed in a black Tuscan liat trimmed with black velvet and blue piping, and the stolen mantle and costume ; had no lug- gage, said she was of French extraction, and suffered from heart diseasa ; she had the goads sent to her lodgings upon approbation, and absconded with them. Information to be fiven to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Police Station, tastings, by whom all reasonable expenses will be paid.— Bow- street, April 21. Charged on a Sheriff's warrant with embezzling £ 48, the moneys of the Clyde Shipping Company, Oswald- street, Glasgow : JAMES FERGUSON, a clerk, 23 years of age, 6 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stoutly made, black hair inclined to curl and usually cut short, fair complexion, black whiskers and moustache, shaved chin, a scar on upper lip at side of left nostril, and nose hollow in centre ; dressed in light tweed suit, black felt hat, and speaks with Scotch accent. May go abroad. Information to be given to Chief Constable McCall, Glasgow.— Bow- street, April 21. Absconded on the 17th instant, from the 1 Belle Vue' hotel, Abergavenny, charged with stealing a light- coloured Overcoat, double- breasted, . with velvet collar to match, and 13s. Cd. in Silver, the property of Mr. Charles James Cooper : WILLIAM HENRY WEAVER, a grocer's assistant, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slight make, salbw complexion, dark hair, small dark moustache, no whiskers, a native of near Worcester, and of respectable appearance; dressed ia dark tweed suit, brown felt hat, with round top, and supposed to be wearing the stolen coat and a ring on fourth left finger, with red stone. Information to be given to Superintendent Freeman, County Constabulary, Abergavenny, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bcu- streeS, April 21. Absconded on the 13th instant, from Wallingford, charged with embezzling illO 6s. 6d. : THOS. WARRICK, about 70 years of age, 5 feet 5 inchcs high, pale complexion, thin face, sore eyes, slender build, no whiskers, and takes snuff; dressed iu dark tweed coat and vest, cord trousers, side spring boots, striped cotton shirt, and hard low- crowned hat, all new. Information to be given to Superintendent Borlase, County Policti Station, Wallingford, Berks.— Bow- street, April 19. A wan ant has been issued for the apprehension of WILLIAM WALLIS, or CHAPMAN, on a charge of stealing a pair of Trousers at Tunbridge Wells on the 10th instant : he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet G inches high, dark hair and wh^ kers, and wide month; uressed in dark jacket or coat, two Blops underneath, black billycock hat, and the stolen trousTs, which are black, with a new uubleached calico pocket on l ight side.
