Notice.— It ia requested that all communications lor the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature- of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and aworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letter* addressed to the Editor must l » e prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from tlio Militia, should bo forwardod on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING- About 12' 30 p. m. on the 16th instant, the body of a male child was found in the Calder and Hebble Canal, near Thornes Flood Gates, in the township of Alverthorpe- with- Thornes, the body was wrapped in part of an old cotton chemise, and part of an old quilted scarlet flannel Petticoat, with about 5 inches broad, and 5 feet in length, of black merino round the bottom, and tied tightly round with about 1 6 yards of narrow black braid. The body appears to have V been in the water three or four weeks, and supposed to have comedown the river some distance. The child appears to have been born alive, and to have lived from J an hour to an hour, and death was caused by suffocation. At the coroner's inquest, a verdict of ' Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, Wakefield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 21. ROBBERY AMD IAROHY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on the 16th instant, from the person of a lady, on entering a first class carriage, at the London, Chatham, and Dover Railway platform, Canterbury, at 4' 40 p. m. : a seal- skin Purse, containing £ G in Gold, and sortie Silver : the purse was picked up shortly after the train left Canterbury on the line, empty. Also stolen from the person of Mrs. Kennett, in the same train, between Adisbam and Dover : a Purse. A man of middle height, fair hair, inclined to be red, and small moustache ; dressed in cutaway coat, billycock hat, and carrying a hat box or parcel in his hand is suspected. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Davies, Canterbury, Kent.— Bow- street, April 21. Description of EDWARD TINSLEY, a chainmaker, late of Cradley Heath, in the parish of Rowley Rsgis, Staffordshire, who is charged with highway robbery at Cradley Heath, on the 3rd inst. : he is 27 years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, light complexion, light hair, little or no whiskers, and slender build ; dressed in very old dark clothes, much worn, and very dirty and ragged. He is supposed to have gone to the Staffordshire potteries to seek employment at a chain manufactory. Information to be given to Inspector Price, Police Station, Old Hill, Dudley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 19, Description of two men charged with highway robbery at Bungay, on the night of the 21st ultimo: FREE HARPER, alias HARBER, of Brooke, Norfolk, labourer, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh com- plexion, and dark hair ; dressed in a brown worsted vest, dark trousers, and cloth cap, with French peak. FREDK. MOORE, alias SKINGO, of Bungay, labourer, about 18 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, brown hair, and fresh complexion ; dressed in blue pilot cloth coat, blue cloth trousers, blue guernsey, and black wideawake hat. They have both been in the herriDg fishing, and may be dressed as fishermen Information to be given to Inspector Foster, Police Station, Bungay, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, April 16. A cottage at Long Common, parish of Claverley, was entered by the same means, and £ 3 iu Gold, 17s. in Silver ; and two gold Wedding Rings, stolen between 12' 30 and 7 p. m. on the 17th instant, the property of Edward Elcock. On the 17th instant, between 1 and 7 p. m., the dwelling- house of Theophilus Pritchard, was entered by the same means, at Budge Heath, in the parish of Claverley, and a silver verge Watch, maker George Bridgnorth, with si - Chain and common Seals attached, stolen. Si posed by two men : one about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, very thin make, sallow complexion, and dark hair ; dressed in black dress coat, tweed trousers, and bard round hat. The other about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, stout make, light, sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache, and clean shaved chin ; dressed in dark coat, tweed trousers, and billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Police Constable ( 36) Brew, Claverley, Salop.— Bow- street, April 21. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Knipton, on the 15th instant, the property of Matthew Clayton : four £ 5 Notes, Grantham Bank; a Sovereign ; a Half Sovereign ; three Florins; a silver lever hunting Watch, No. 7575 R, ' F. C.' on front of case; a Turkey red and white cotton Pocket- handkerchief ; and a pocket Book, with black cover. On the same day, the dwelling- house of Elizabeth Parks, at Knipton, was also broken and entered, and stolen therein : two old- fashioned pair- cased silver verge Watches, one bas ' C. H.' engraved on back of outer case, steel curb Chain, very small silver Coin, and two common Keys attached, the other maker's name Jno. Thompton, No. 4078, long hand off, and two common Keys attached; a plain gold wedding Ring, worn very thin, and broken through in one place; a very small silver Seal, with a bird engraved upon it; a Half- crown ; and a Sixpence. Three men are charged with the above offence, two of whom are in custody, and remanded till the 26th instant, namely : GEORGE SHAW, 30 years of age, a hawker, of New Bad- ford, and HENRY ANDERTON, alias SWIFT, alias DRUMMER, fish and fruit hawker, Nottingham, 28 years of age ; the other man named JOHN ROBERTS, of Cooper- street, Nottingham, has absconded : he is about 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather stout make, fresh com- pie- ion, full featured, dark hair, small brown whiskers on the sides of his face, rather high cheek bones, and thick lips ; generally dressed in dark clothes, and hard black billycock hat; he is a betting man, and attends races. Information to be given to Inspector Hinds, Constabulary Station, Bottes- ford, near Nottingham, Leicestershire, who holds two warrants for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 21. Description of a man charged with breaking into Halton and Sutton Werner Railway Stations, near Runcorn, during the night of the 16th instant : he is from 30 to 33 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slender build, sharp and active, thin dark features, and dark hair and whiskers all round his face ; dressed in a dark tweed jacket, dark trousers, light elastic- side boots, and black hard felt hat. He can be iden- tified. Information to be given to Superintendent Aston, Town Hall, Runcorn, Cheshire.— Bow- street, April 19. for such information as shall lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in pro- portion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to Chief Constable Henderson, Leeds, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 14. Stolen on the 7th instant, about 3 p m., from a cottage at Batheaston, by means of housebreaking : a rough blue cloth Overcoat, double- breasted, two pockets on the outside with flaps, and one inside, red and blue plaid lining ; a black Coat; two Vests ; a pair of Trousers ; and a red cotton Handkerchief. By a man, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, small whiskers, dark complexion, and rather stoutly built; dressed in soft bowler liat, short dirty slop, and light fustian trousers. All the stolen Articles ( except the overcoat, which he is supposed to be wearing) have been recovered. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, County Police Station, Upper Bristol- road, Bath. — Bow- street, April 14. Between 7- 30 p. m. 9th and 8' 30 a. m. on the 10th instant, the premises of Mr. Oliver Young, watchmaker and jeweller, 27, Sandhill, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, were broken and entered, and stolen therein : 500 gold Brooches, coloured and bright, various sizes and patterns. 500 silver Brooches, various sizes and patterns. lOC'O pairs of gold Ear- rings, various sizes and patterns. 100 gold Keeper Bings. 100 sets of gold Studs, various patterns. 6 large gold Medals, shield pattern. 3 gold Bracelets. 1 dozen gold Lockets. 1 gentleman's gold Buckle Ring, with piece of diamond shaped platina inside. G'dozen silver Thimbles, various sizes. 4 silver Snuff Boxes, one large, three small, 1 silver gilt cupid Barrow. _ 6 dozen silver Pencil- cases. — Several gold Pencil- cases. And various other articles of Jewellery. £ 50 reward will be paid by Mr. Young for such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered, Information to be giveii to tho Chief Constable, Newcastle- on- Tyne.- Bow- street, April 14. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. the was On the 17th instant between 1 and 5.30 p. m. ' Woodman' beerhouse, in the parish of Claverley, entered by means of pick lock keys, and stolen therein : large silver verge Watch, No. 4449 ; a pinch back Watch, a gold albert Chain with Seal and Key attached ; a silver Watch Guard, curb pattern ; a plaited wove Guard ; two pairs of gold Ear- rings ; a silver Thimble ; a small gold Brooch, Staffordshire knot pattern ; the property of Selina Brazier, Stolen from a house at Cheadle Bulkeley, during the night of the 16th instant, by means of forcing open the front room window : a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, small size, marked ' W.,' an electro- plated Tea Pot; a ditto Coffee Pot; a ditto Sugar Basin, pattern— imitation of small wicker; a ditto Tea Pot, marked ' M. K.;' a ditto Coffee Pot and Cream Jug, both marked ' M. K.;' a ditto Cruet Stand; a ditto Toast Rack; a ditto Stand and two Covers for Butter Coolers ; and a cloth Table Cover, pattern— green flowers on a black ground. £ 5 reward will be paid for such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Stolen by means of shopbreaking, between the night of the 10th and thenight of the 11th instant, in Leeds : 3 plain sealskin Mantles, quilted with brown satinet, 25 inches deep. 2 plain sealskin Mantles, quilted with brown satinet, 27 inches deep. 2 sealskin Mantles, trimmed with beaver satinet, quilted, 25 inches deep. 1 sealskin Mantle, trimmed with beaver satinet, 29 inches deep, shaped to figure. 1 sealskin Mantle, trimmed with beaver satinet, 20 ins. deep. 2 black astracan Jackets, black fringe at the bottom, lined with black quilted silk, 1 mock sealskin Jacket, trimmed with mock beaver satinet, lined. 4 Sealskins, about 36 inches loDg. 3 Sealskins, about 55 inches long. 1 seal Set, for jacket trimmings, about 8 inches deep, 2 beaver Sets, 9 inches daep, with large cuffs. 5 beaver Skins. 4 seal Vests, not made up. 1 beaver Vest. 2 astracan Vests. 1 mock seal Vest. 1 Milner's Box, No. 139,720. The mantles were marked ' H. F. & W. & c.,' ' S. S. & N.,: • G. C. & c? or ' G. G. & S.,' and ' B. S. & II.,' ' H. F.,' or MORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on the 16th instant, from a stable at Homey- lane : a dark bay Mare, 13| hands high, aged, in good condition, wnite streak down forehead, half clipped, off hind fetlock white.— Metropolitan Police M Division, April 21. Stolen on the afternoon of the 19th inst. from the livery stables in Western Road, St. Leouard's, the property of Mr. Lester : a pair of iron grey Ponies, about 12 hands high, oue a gelding, and the other a mare, and a small blue painted Phaeton with a seat at the back, maker, Beaney Hastings : by a young man who hired the same, and has not been heard of since, about 16 or 17 years of age, short, fair complexion, light hair ; had on a dark mixture suit, and high hat, carried a blue jacket with him. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings.— Bov- street, April 21. Description of a man named GEORGE ARTHUR RAYMOND, alias ARTHUR OXLEY, who is charged with stealing a Horse, Saddle, and Bridle ( of which he was a bailee), on the 5th inst. : he is 19 to 21 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fair complexion, round face, good looking, and of good address. He stated that his father was a clergy- man ; was last seen at Leicester, where he sold the horse, saddle, and bridle. He was then dressed in a dark coat and billycock hat, blue neck- tie in sailor's knot, and red glass studs in shirt front. Information to be given to Major Poyntz, Chief Constable, Nottingham.— Bow- stteet, Ap'il 19. Stolen from a field near Aberdare, during the night of the 16th inst., a dark brown filly Pony, 2 years old, between 10 and 11 hands high, long tail, not shod, one white heel, and in good condition ; the property of Mr. E. Jones, surgeon. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Thomas, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, April 19. Stolen : a dark brown horse Pony, about 11 hands high, aged, two white hocks, star on forehead, and lias the spring halt in hind legs. Also at the same time : a small village Cart and Harness. By a youth, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, sallow complexion, rather long thin face, dark hair, inclined to curl, no whiskers ; dressed iu a pepper- and- salt overcoat., soft brown felt hat, blue necktie, heavy lace- up shoes, and had the appearance of beiDg a draper's assistant; he went to Mr. George Wattson's yard in Broad- street, Bamsgate, on the 10th instant, about noon, and hiied the pony and cart to go to Heme Bay ; he was seen at Sturry at 3 30 p. m. on the same day, going towards Canterbury. Information to be given to Head Constable Buse, Town Hall, Itamsgate, Kent. — Bovj- slreet, April 19. Supposed stolen from a field at King's Norton, on the 23th ultimo, the property of Mr. Richard Clayton : 20 wether yearling Sheep, black faced Shropshire, brand marked on the rump, Information to be given at the Police Office, King's Heath, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, April 16. B. S. H.' £ 20 reward will be paid by the owner of the shop Stolen on the 13th instant, from a stable in Grove- road, 2 POLICE GAZETT E. April 21 Hackney : a dark bay Mare, 15 hands high, white or fore- head, two scars on off side, a little hair rubbed off fore off leg, in good condition.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, April 16. Description of a man who was entrusted with a brown mare Cob ( aged, 13| hands high, small white speck on fore- head, short tail, large head and ears, in good condition, and fore legs clipped) to take from Sittingbourne to Minster Sheppy on the 13th instant, aud has not since been heard of : about 24 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh com- plexion, cheesecutter cap, black coat, and old light shoes. Information to be given to Superintendent Mayne, Police Court, Sittingbourne, Kent.— Bow- street, April 16. Stolen during the night of the 10th ultimo, from a field at the Garig : a dark brown mare Pony, 4 years old, 12 hands high, white star on forehead, has beeu shod, the property o£ Mr. B. Poole. Information to be given to Superintendent Ellis, Welshpool, or to P. C. Thomas, Buttington, near Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, April 14. LIMEI Y AND EMBEZZLEMEIT, Absconded from Shrewsbury, on the 14th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing an iron Brace ( since recovered) : JOHN DONALD, about 24 years of age. 6 feet high, fresh complexion, long features, and dark hair; dressed in moleskin trousers and vest, black coat, and black billy- cock hat. He will probably seek employment as a striker. Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, Borough Police Olfce, Shrewsbury, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 21. Stolen on the 20th instant, from St. Leonards- on- Sea : a black Cashmere Mantle, braided nearly all over with black mohair braid, and a light- grey barege Costume with three flounces at back, trimmed with dark blue silk. By a woman who said she was the wife of a solicitor at Watford, about 37 years of age, short and stout, dark complexion and hair : dressed in a black Tuscan hat trimmed with black velvet and blue piping, and the stolen mantle and costume ; had no lug- gage, said she was of French extraction, and suffered from heart diseasa ; she had the goods sent to her lodgings upon approbation, and absconded with them. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Police Station, Hastings, by whom all reasonable expenses will be paid.— Bow- street, April 21. Charged on a Sheriff's warrant with embezzling £ 48, the moneys of the Clyde Shipping Company, Oswald- street, Glasgow : JAMES FERGUSON, a clerk, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stoutly made, black hair inclined to curl and usually cut short, fair complexion, black whiskers and moustache, shaved chin, a scar on upper lip at side of left nostril, and nose hollow in centre ; dressed in light tweed suit, black felt hat, and speaks with Scotch accent. May go abroad. Information to be given to Chief Constable McCall, Glasgow.— Bow- street, April 21. A'isconded on the 17th instant, from the'Belle Vue' hotel, Abergavenny, charged - with stealing a light- coloured Overcoat, double- breasted, with velvet collar to match, and 13?. 6d. in Silver, the prope. xty of Mr. Charles James Cooper : WILLIAM HENRY WEAVER, a grocer's assistant, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slight make, sallow complexion, dark hair, small dark moustache, no whiskers, a native of near Worcester, and of respectable appearance; dressed ia dark tweed suit, brown felt hat, with round top, and supposed to be wearing the stolen coat and a riug on fourth left finger, with red stone. Information to be given to Superintendent Freeman, County Constabulary, Abergavenny, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bcu- sirret, April 21. Absconded on the 13th instant, from Wallingford, charged with embezzling £ 10 6s. 6d. : THOS. WARRICK, about 70 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, pale complexion, thin face, sore eyes, slender build, no whiskers, and takes snuff; dressed iu dark tweed coat and vest, cord trousers, side spring boots, striped cotton shirt, and hard low- crowned hat, all new. Information to be given to Superintendent Borlase, County Police Station, Wallingford, Berks.— Brno- street, April 19. A wan ant has been issued for the apprehension of WILLIAM WALLIS, or CHAPMAN, on a charge of stealing a pair of Trousers at Tunbridge Wells on the 10th instant : he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet C inches high, dark hair and whiskers, aud wide mouth; dressed in dark picket or coat, two slops underneath, black billycock hat, and the stolen trousers, which are black, with a new unbleached calico pocket on right side. He has been in the 2ud Surrey Militia, and has been employed as a carter and labourer. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.-- Bow- street, April 19. Description of THOMAS EDWIN BARBER, who is charged with embezzling £ 25, the monies of Mr. Charles Morris, accountant, Birmingham : he is about 17 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, stout build, dark brown hair, parted down the centre, teeth very wide apart, supposed dressed in light overcoat, and carries a uew black leather bag and brown leather hat case. He has a hesitating way of speaking. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glossop, Police Office, Birmingham, who holds the warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, April 19. Description of HENRY GIBSON, who is charged with stealirg from his lodgings, on the 9th instant, a Cash- box and £ 12 19s. iu cash : he is 19 or 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark hair, no whiskers or moustache; dressed respectably in dark clothes. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glossop, Police Office, Birmingham, who holds the warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, April 19. Absconded from Madeley, Salop, on the morning of the 15th instant, charged with stealing from a bedroom in Madeley, a brown leather Purse, containing five Sovereigns and a quantity of Silver; and an old- fashioned open- face silver verge Watch, makers Brown aud Evans, Wyle Lop, Shrewsbury, No. 2091, the property of his fellow lodger Richard Wilkes, a labourer: GEORGE INGLESTON, alias GEORGE ISAAC BEAUMONT GOODWIN, sup- posed a native of Lancashire, about 23 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, light brown hair, parted in centre, no whiskers, rather long face, and is of drunken habits; dressed in a hard jitnerow hat or sealskin cap, dark mixture jacket, with outside hip pockets, dark mixture waistcoat, cotton cord trousers, very much marked with oil, lace- up boots, aud cotton check shirt. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or Sergeant Turner, Police Station, Ironbridge, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension,— Bow- street, April 19. Description of WILLIAM BATES, alias WILLIAM | CECIL JOSEPH, charged . with stealing £ 3 10s., in Gold: and Silver, and one silk Purse, at Northwich, on the 15th ins.: . about 18 j'ears of age, 5 feat 4 or 5 inches high, fresh com- j plexion, brown hair, blue eyes, proportionate make, and smart looking; dressed in a dark twilled cloth coat, black vest, and j plaid trousers, much worn at seat and at bottoms. He is supposed to have been employed in a telegraph or post- office ; he has his character written on- bill- paper, which is headed in print—' G. Beckett & Co., No. 7, Saint Anne's Square, Man- chester,' and is supposed to have a relation residing in Bath- street, Derby. Information to be given to Superintendent Rowbottom, Middlewich, or to Inspector Dutton, Northwich, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., April 19. Absconded from Gretton, near Winchcsmb, on the 7th instant, charged with larceny : LENARD TURNER, a labourer, 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair, rather sore eyes, and pale complexion; dressed in a white navvy frock, moleskin trousers, militia boots, and woollen cap with peak. He is supposed to have gone to the Forest- of- Dean. Information to be given to Serjeant Tanner, Winchcomb, Gloucestershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 16. Description of EDWIN PRIDE, a photographer's door- man, who absconded from Portsmouth on the 13th instant, charged with larceny : he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair cut short, whiskers and moustache shaved off, prominent lower jaw, and pale complexion; dressed when last seen iu brown felt hat with wide band, short black coat, vest, and trousers, and old boots. Infor- mation to be given to Head Constable Barber, Portsmouth, Hants, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 16. Absconded from Shrewsbury, on the 9th instant, charged with stealing an English gold hunting lever Watch, No. 4267, maker Rotherhams, London, with enamel dial, massive gold curb Chain, two gold Seals ( one with nag's head, and the other with three iuitial letters), gold Key, and a gold Coin the size of a 2s. piece attached ; a gold |- plate lever Watch, No. 16631, maker Ed. He said he was a clerk on the Great Western Railway at Bristol, had with him a single barrel Gun, which he also took away from Head's house.
