As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all ] Letters addressed to the Editor J'MHSt t » e prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. 2,' he Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded • on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as abovo, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. black bonnet and shawl, and spoke with a southern accent. The following day, about 12' 50 p. m., the cheque was presented at the National Provincial Bank, Newcastle- on- Tyne, neatly altered from £ 2 to .£ 200, and notes to that amount obtained, by a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 to 6 inches high, very light or red hair, fresh coloured ; dressed in black over- coat, silk hat, and wore gloves stitched on the back of hands with white ; this man shortly afterwards tendered one of the £ 5 notes at the post office. Description of the notes obtained : two £ 50 Bank of England Notes, dated 19th Jan., 1874, Manchester, Nos. 19473 and 25458; one ditto, 25th July, 1873, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, No. 94741 ; one £ 5 ditto, 27th July, 1874, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, No. 67069; one ditto, same date and place, No. 67070, since traced to man described; one ditto, lst August, 1872, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, No. 48733, since traced to man described ; five ditto, 27th July, 1874, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, Nos. 01501, 15688, 68359, 51369, and 60290 ; and two ditto, lst August, 1874, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, Nos. 89995 and 47036. Information to be given to Chief Constable Nicholls, Newcastle- upon- Tyne.— Bow- street, March 25. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNBIIG. Description of a box and contents booked from Ripon to ' Ihe city of York, on the 18th instant, which on being opened • on the 24th instant, was found to contain the dead body of a •: fj: illy developed male child, there were five marks on the face, where decomposition had set in, and which appeared to correspond with the fingers and thumb of a person's hand compressing the mouth, there were no marks on the body. The medical gentleman gave his opinion that the child had - been suffeeated, and had been dead about a fortnight, the inquest is adjourned until Friday the 3rd of April next. A new tin bonnet box painted oak colour, grained, iron handle ou lid, painted black, light blue inside, bottom black, ' 5s. 3d.' under lid, 12 ins. deep, 13 ins. by 14^ ins. wide, locked with hand lock, ' N. E. R., Ripon' on lid outside ; the body was dressed in a new flannel nightgown, with tape shoulder straps, three pleats in front, herring- bone stitched, with white thread under the edges, two otrings on each side, a new unbleached cotton'nightgown, the end of the sleeves roughly cut, not finished, five strands of cotton - through the slot, roughly hemmed with mauve- colcured cotton, a new unbleached cotton shirt, roughly hemmed' rsimd, the top sleeves and bottom not finished, iiew flannel ' hood, white glone strings, gimped round the front, not finished, an old napkin, patched in the corner, a linen pocket handkerchief, plain hem, an old ' cotton handkerchief, with striped border, one corner torn off, a small piece of old scarlet flannel hemmed on one side with . black thread, very small flannel pillow, filled with saw- dust, a, quantity of fine machine shavings in the bottom of the box, and a portion of the ' Manchester Daily Examiner and Times,' . of Saturday, April 12th, 1873. Information to be given at the Police Office, York.— Bow- street, March 27. On the night of fhe 21st instant, the body of a newly born male child was found in the Kennett and Avon Canal, near the^ London Bridge, Devizes, tied up in a black alpaca apron, trimmed with four rows of . narrow black velvet near the bottom, a white pocket handkerchief, machine hemmed, and a small hole burrt in it, and a piece of new calico, about half a yard long. At the inquest held on the 22nd instant, the medical evidence went to show that the cause of death was drowning, and the coroner's jury have returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' against some person or persons unknown. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by the government to any person who will give such information and evidence as shall lead to ; the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers of the child, and Mr. Secretary Cross, will advise the graiit of Her Majesty's gracious pardon, to any accomplice not being the actual murderer, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. ROBBERY AMD LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on the night of the 20th instant, from the person of Charles Stackhouse, at West Bromwich : a silver lever Watch, with silver dial and seconds hands, maker Fisher, West Bromwich, No. 9077, gold albert Chain attached, with topaz stone. £ 1 reward will be paid on the apprehension of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Superintendent Woollaston, Police Office, Staffordshire Constabulary, West Bromwich. — Bow- street, March 22. BURGLARY AID HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen in Newcastle- upon- Tyne, between the 28th and 29th instant,, by means ® f housebreaking : a large- sized gold Geneva Watch, No, 2428, had a round long- linked gold Albert attached ; a large- sized silver Geneva Watch, No. 2638, had a long silver Guard attached ; an Australian nugget finger Ring ; a suit of superfine black cloth Clothes, man's size, in good condition ; a fine blue cloth shooting Coat, double- breasted, and one pocket outside of each lap; a pair of light striped cloth Trousers, ahd a double- breasted Yest of same material; a blue pilot cloth Jacket ; a pair of dark striped tweed Trousers, and a single- breasted Yest of same material— all new, to fit a youth 10 years old, coat and jacket have ' George Senior, Tailor, ^ cotswood Road,' on strap inside of collars ; a baby's white satin Coat and Cape, trimmed with blue silk; and a man's black, puce, and yellow striped woollen Shirt, new. Information to be given to Chief Constable Nicholls, Neweastle: on- Tyne.— Bow- st., March 31. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen : a chesnut Cob, about 14 hands high, aged, two white hind joints, blazing white face, white chin, with a black spot on under lip, marked shoulders, and broken knees. A lad, who gave the name of BROWN, from Worthing, about 16 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark brown hair, dark eyes, rather full, slight build, dressed in dark clothes, straw hat, and a pair of well- made half boots, and carrying a white cane in his hand, weat to Mr. Herriott's yard, in West- street, Brighton, on the 23rd instant, and hired the above cob for two hours' ride, but has not returned. £ 2 reward. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton, Sussex, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. Bow- street, March 31. Found ( supposed stolen) at Severn Stoke, on the 6th instant : eighteen dark- faced yearling Sheep. Information to be given to Superintendent Checketts, Police Office, Upton- on- Severn, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, March 31. A man calling himself JOHN HUNT, a grocer's assistant, is remanded until the lst proximo, charged with stealing a Donkey : he is 18 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, light brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion ; dressed in blue ribbed cloth coat, dark trousers, with a light stripe, spring- side boots, and hard black felt hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Bridges, Police Station, Brentwood, Essex.— Bow- street, March 31. Stolen on or about the 17th instant, from a field at the Yew Tree Farm, in the parish of Penkridge : a 1- year old fat wether Sheep, of the Shropshire breed. Information to be given to Sergeant Barrett, Penkridge, Stafford.— Bow- street, March 27. Stolen during the night of the 16th instant, from Garrett- lane, Streatham : a bay Mare, 6 years old, 14 hands high, white star on forehead and white mark on hind leg, in good condition.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, March 22. Stolen on the night of the 17th instant, from a stable at Low Habbo ey, near Kidderminatei, the property of Fredk. Weaver : a black horse Pony 4 years old, 13 § hands high, in good condition, some white hair on the near foreleg from the knee to the hoof, and the off hind fetlock white. Also stolen an old Saddle and double- rein Bridle, with. Snaffle and Curb Bitts. A rewaid of £ 5 will be given upon the recovery of the Pony and conviction of the offender or offenders on applica- tion to Mr. Weaver. Information to be given to Superintendent FreentaD, Stour- bridge, Worcestershire, or to Sergeant Matthews, Wolverley, near Kidderminster, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, March 22. FORGERY. Charged on a warrant with uttering forged Bonds of the Chicago aud North Western Railway of America : HENRY CLIFFORD, late of 7, Mark- lane, and 20, Royal- avenue, Sloane- square, Chelsea, 55 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, grey hair and moustache, no whiskers, grey eyes, very sallow complexion, delicate looking, slim build, wears false teeth, and is a vegetarian. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, March 31. About 6' 30 p. m. on the 19th instant, a female called upon a gentleman at his residence in the suburbs of New- castle, said she was residing in the neighbourhood, and alleged that her son was in some difficulty af= Darlington, and required £ 2 next morning, but being too late to get a post office order, requested the gentleman to accommodate her with a cheque for that amount, which he did, she giving him two sovereigns, and stating that she had been twice married; she appeared to be about 45 years of age, medium height, dark hair, sharp features; plainly dressed in black, with During the night of the 28th instant, the workshop of Thomas Wynne, shoemaker, of Barton, Cheshire, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair of old Wellington Boots, partly soled, with the lasts in them, tops inside lined with red leather ; a last Hook ; and two Awls. Supposed by a man, about 5 feet 7 inches high ; dressed in dark round jacket, and black cloth cap, with French peak, who was seen . near the premises at 3' 30 a. m. on the 29th instant. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Wilson, TattenhalJ, or to Sergeant Bethell, Police Station, Farndon, Cheshire.— Bow- street, March 31. Between 9 p. m. on the 18th and 7' 30 a. m. on the 19th instant, the offices attached to five railway stations, on the Birkenhead and Chester joint line, were broken and entered, and money amounting to about £ 17, in Gold, Silver, and Copper; 2s. worth of Postage Stamps ; two Parcels, containing two dress Pieces ; a pair of man's Hose ; some scarlet Wool; and Brussels Net, 22 inches, were stolen therein. Entrance at each station was effected by breaking a pane of glass over the catch of the office window, aDd the several tills were forced open with a f- inch chisel or jemmy. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Police Station, Abbey- street, Birkenhead.— Bow- st., March 22, Between 12 and 5 p. m. on the 18th instant, the dwelling- house of Charles Doubell, of LiDgfield, was broken and entered, and stolen therein ( supposed by a tramp) : a pair of silver Salt Spoons, with initials ' C. D. a pair of Scales, with silk cords and weights for a guinea and half- guinea ; a brass Balance for weighing a sovereign or half- sovereign ; and a silk Handkerchief with yellow ground and white spots ; a pair of plated Candlesticks. Information to be given to Superintendent Murtell, Surrey Constabulary, Godstone.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen, by means of housebreaking, from the shop of Mr. J. Bartle, watchmaker and jeweller, 20, Freeman- street, Great Grimsby, during the night of the 18th instant: nine- teen gold Geneva Watches ; a white dial gold Lever ditto, No. 772 D; a white Dial, name James Bartle, No. 5356.; a gold Watch, No. 37892 ; nine gold Lever ditto ; a gold lever Hunting ditto ; thirteen silver Lever ditto ; twenty- five gold Chains and Alberts ; twelve silver Alberts and Guards ; twenty- three ladies' Fancy and Dress Rings ; twenty- six gentlemen's Signet Rings, bright and coloured gold ; three ditto large coloured Hoops ; forty ladies' gold Hoops, 9 and 18- carat gold ; and sixteen or eighteen gold Wedding Rings. Information to be given to Head Constable Campbell, Grimsby, Lincolnshire,— Bow- street, March. 22, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Charged on a warrant with embezzlement : WILLIAM VANCE FEAST, formerly resided at Glen Cottage, Petersham, about 40 years cf age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, shaved under chin, full face, stoutly built; dressed respectably, and of gentlemanly appearance. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, March 31. A. bseonded on the 24th instant, from Love- lane, Shad- well, stealing £ 80, the monies of his employer : a man, 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair and moustache ; dressed in dark mixture loose overcoat, dark cloth trousers and vest, white wrapper, side- spriDg boots, round black felt hat, a clerk, supposed will emigrate from Liverpool.— Metropolitan Police, Iv Division, March 31. Abcconded from South Shields, on the 22nd instant, charged with embezzling £ 7, the property of the Directors of the Society for the Relief of Widows and Orphans of Shipwrecked Mariners : JOHN GREEN, shipbroker, a native of South Shields, 45 to 50 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate figure, dark complexion, rather curly black hair, long black bushy whiskers ( mixed with grey) and moustache, generally wears an eye- glass in right eye, holds his head forward when walking, of respectable appearance, very much addicted to drink, fond of horse racing, and may be found in company of betting men ; when last seen was dressed in blue witney overcoat, dark fancy vest, dark tweed trousers, black silk hat, elastic- side boots, and generally carries an umbrella. Information to be given to Head Constable Richardson, Borough Police Office, South Shields, Durham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, March 31. Absconded from Bristol, on or about the 2nd instant charged with embezzling £ 449, the monies of his masters, the Bristol Urban Sanitary Authority : HERBERT PALMER RIDDLE, rate collector, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, proportionate build, square shoulders, ruddy complexion, dark brown hair, rather large moustachc, whiskers and beard all round his face, beard freshly grown, heavy dark eyebrows and full eyes, has a nervous manner, active or quick in walking ; dressed when last seen in dark clothes, overcoat, high silk hat, and white muffler. A warrant is granted for his apprehension. £ 50 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information to Mr. John G. Heaven, the Clerk to the Bristol Urban Sanitary Authority, or to Chief Superintendent Handcock, Bristol Police Force, as shall lead to his apprehension,-— Bow- street, March 31, 2 POLICE GAZETTE. March 31 Stolen during the night of the 29th instant, from the lodging- house of James Deeping, the property of George Ambrose, Sudbury, Suffolk : a dark blue double- breasted pilot Coat, with yellow buttons, anchor upon buttons ; a pair of dark blue pilot Trousers, mended on one knee, fly fronts ; a pair of blucher Boots, one or two lace holes torn out; a blue Guernsey; and a brown Guernsey, with red stripe:. By a lodger, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, grey hair and whiskers, and dark complexion ; supposed to be wearing the stolen clothes and a black billycock hat, as he left an old pair of trousers, a short drab slop, and a pair of old lace boots behind. He is supposed to be carrying an old black coat. Information ts be given to Superintendent Pidgeon, Bourn, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, March 31. Description of a man who absconded from Spittlegate, on the 24th inst., charged with stealing a watch ( since re- covered), a fitter by trade: 35 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rather stout made, very bald, right hand contracted, dark whiskers, rather bushy, dressed in cap, pilot jacket, and dark* trousers; talks of having been at sea. Information to be given to Superintendent Wynne, Police Station, Spittlegate, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, March 27. Stolen on the 22nd instant, from a dwelling- house in Ripon: a dark brown mixture cloth stable Jacket, buttons up to the neck with wood or bone buttons, nearly new ; a pair of drab fancy figured Trousers, made in groom's style, to fit tight to the legs. Supposed by a man, a lodger, who stayed in the house three nights, and absconded on the above date without paying for his board or lodging : about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair, sallow complexion, • has the appearance of a foreigner, and is of good address ; well dressed, in a light grey overcoat, black cloth undercoat, dark cloth plaid trousers, low shoes with military heels and worsted laces, and high- crowned narrow- brimmed black hat; he stated he was an artist, and boasted of having travelled through America and on the continent. Information to be given to Superintendent Burniston, City Police, Ripon, York- shire.— Bow- street, March 27. Charged with embezzlement at Sheffield: JOHN WARTLEY, a butcher, native of Swinton, Yorkshire, last resided at Sheffield, 21 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, rather dark complexion, dark brown hair, scar amongst the hair at the back of head, rather rough voice, and strong build ; supposed to be accompanied by a ballet girl, who was engaged at the Alexandra Theatre, Sheffield, daring the last pantomime. Information to be given at the Central Police Office, Sheffield. - Bow- street, March 25. Stolen from the house of, Henry Cross, labourer, Oswestry, on the lst ultimo : a Coat and Yest, recovered. By DAVID MORRIS, labourer, of Oswestry, 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, swarthy complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, long visage; dressed in white slop, cotton cord trousers, moleskin vest, black necktie, billycock hat, and strong lace- up boots; he is most likely working at a farm- house. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, March 24. Description of JOHN W. YABSLEY, late manager to an upholsterer, who absconded from Portsmouth, on the 19th instant, charged with embezzlement: he is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, light hair, whiskers, and moustache, fair complexion ; dressed in long blite overcoat, and a suit of black clothes underneath^ of gentlemanly appearance, and fond of company Information to fee given to Head Constable Barber, Portsmouth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 24. Absconded from Salford, in the county of Warwick, on the 12th inst., charged with stealing a Concertina : FRANK BRADSHAW, a native of Bidford, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stoutly made, fresh complexion, light brown hair, brown eyes; dressed in a dark grey coat, light grey trousers with a dark stripe down the sides, and dark billycock hat. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Dunbar, Alcester, Warwickshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 24. Stolen from a bed- room, in the borough of Birkenhead, on the 19th instant : a gold Geneva Watch, No. 13933, engraved back; also a gold curb albert Chain and gold Locket, one side blue enamelled. By a man, about 19 years of age, about 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, dark complexion, moustache beginning to grow ; dressed in dark coat and vest, cream- coloured trousers, old billycock hat, and white muffler, with blue spots; Welsh accent, and said he was a plumber. £ 2 reward. Information to be given at the Police Office, Town Hall, Birkenhead, Cheshire.— Bow- street, March 24. Absconded on the 21st instant, from Abergavenny, charged with stealing a gold lever Watch, open face, maker W. Cribb, Southampton, No. 1338, the property of Mrs. Morgan, Angel Hotel, Abergavenny ; also a silver Geneva Watch, glass cracked, and a piece chipped off the dial near the figure 8, a common Albert Chain attached, the property of Edwin Spragg, Abergavenny: WILLIAM CASEY, boots, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, slight make, fair complexion, freckled, scar on cheek, supposed below the left eye, sandy hair, little or no whiskers, tattooed ' J. H.' and anchor on one arm, and three dots on back of each hand ; dressed in a black coat, rounded at the bottom of skirt, dark double- breasted vest and trousers to match, imitation plaid, and black felt round top hat; stated that he had been to sea, and is a native of Bath. Information to be given to Superintendent Freeman, County Constabulary, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, who holds warrants for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 24. Stolen between 12 noon and 3 p. m. on the 17th instant, from the dwelling- house of Mrs. Astbury, of Pelsall, the property of Peter Cordall, a lodger : £ 1 16s. 6d. in Gold and Silver; a silver verge Watch ( since found pawned at Wolverhampton). By a man who gave the name of FREDERICK SHAW, who had been lodging at the house a short time, 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, brown ( rattier sandy) hair, no whiskers or moustache, has a little hair under the lower lip, dimple in chin, mark of a cut over right eye, and turns his toes in- wards ; dressed in old blue pilot cloth jacket, much worn and turning brown, black cloth single- breasted vest, old moleskin trousers, blucher boots, hole worn through the toe of one, check scarf, and cloth cap, with ear flaps tied over top with tape. Has a downcast appearance, and states that he has worked in iron works at Moss End and Motherwell, in Scotland, and Hanley, Staffordshire, and is a puddler. Information to be given to Sergeant Arnold, Rushall, or to Police Constable Ellis, Pelsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 22. A warrant is issued at Tunbridge Wells for the appre- hension of THOMAS STANFORD, charged with stealing in January last, the materials of two pairs of Boots : he is 37 years of age, 5 feet 7\ inches high, very red hair and whiskers, which are cut short, freckled face, and is a shoe- maker. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, who holds the warrant. — Bow- street, March 22. Stolen on the 18th instant, from the dwelling- house of Mr. Silvester Brown, at Milton, Weston- super- Mare : a patent lever double- case silvar Watch, with ' Silvester Brown, Weston- super- Mare engraved on the inside of the second case, and without a ring ; a grey woollen scarf Shawl, with black border, and white and black fringe at the bottom. By a man who lodged there for the night, and stated that he was a foreman employed on the Bristol and Exeter Railway, and should require the lodgings for 2 months, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair and whiskers, and stout built; dressed in a pilot cloth reefing jacket, dark cloth vest and trousers, heavy boots, worn at the toes, and a cheesecutter cap, with a small piece of yellow braid across the front, and woollen shirt. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillbanks, Somerset Constabulary, Axbridge, or to Seigeant Hardwick, Weston- super- Mare, Somersetshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Biw- street, March 22. Description of a convict licence- holder who has failed to report himself at the Central Police Station, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, as required by the Prevention of Crimes Act: JOHN CALDER, No. 9968, 43 years of age, 5 feet 5| inches high, dark complexion, grey hair, hazel eyes, nose slightly bent, lost two upper teeth, scar on right arm, several on back of left hand, large one on right buttock, and several brown marks on right side ; was convicted at Newcastle- on- Tyne on the 20th Feb., 1871, and sentenced to five years penal servitude, for robbery, with others, and using violence ; was liberated from Dartmoor Prison on the 4th Feb., 1875.
