Notice.— It b requested that all communieations lor the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insevtion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to tho Editor Enlist l> e prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded cn War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUIDIIG. On the 27th ultimo, the Body of a Woman unknown - was found in the river Avon, near the locks at Saltford, with a contused fagged wound on the forehead, and another - wound across the bridge of the nose, and the coroner's jury have returned a verdict of ' Wilful murder' against some person or persons unknown. Description of the body : about 24 years of age. 4 feet 10 or 11 inches long, stoutly built, black curly hair, good and regular teeth ; dreased in a violet linsey dress body, black pannier, black print skirt with white spots, light brown or faded violet skirt, brown staya, very ragged chemise, white stockings, elastic- side boota, black crape bonnet, trimmed with black satin, violet ribbon, rose, aud black vulcani'e brooch, wore a piece of brown horse cloth with red cross bars as ac apron ; all the clothing was very much worn and stained with grease, pitch, and tar, the piece of horse cloth especially ; the body appeared to have been in the water from ten days to a fortnight. A reward of .£ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who will give such in- formation and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murder er or murderers, and Mr. Secretary Cross will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually com- mitted the murder, who will give such information as will lead to the like result. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of the county of Somerset, Glastonbury, or to Superintendent Emsou, Police Station, Temple Cloud, near BristoL— Bow- street, March 19. Charged with attempting to murder Maria Burring, at Chatham, on the 9th instant: a man, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, very few whiskers uuder chin, full face, stout build, limpa slightly with one leg, scar on one side of neck from abscess, and sue peculiar- looking eye; dressed in dirty white slop, pockets at sides, mended with different material on one sleeve, dark striped tweed trousers, red aud black plaid scarf, billycock hat, and heavy lace- up shoes; he ia likely to frequent low lodging- houses and beershops. Information to be given to Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, March 19. On the morning of the 9th instant, the dead body of a female Child, about two months old, was found in a well at Midsomer Norton. At the coronor's inquest, which is adjourned to the 5th proximo, it was shown that the child was murdered and afterwards thrown into the well. The clothing found on the body has been identified as that worn by a child born iu Shepton- Mallet Union Workhouse on the 10th January last. The mother left the workhouse on the 28th ultimo, and said that she was going to Glastonbury, but was seen to go in the direction of Midsomer Norton : she gave the name of ANN YATES, said that she belonged to Manchester, but she ia supposed to be a native of Devonshire, is 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue or grey eyes, sharp thin nose, and good- looking; dressed in a brown satin dress trimmed with blue braid, black cloth jacket, aud black straw hat with a rose on it. She is supposed to be at present iu Cardiff, near Bristol, from which place she was sent a post- office order. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Deggan, Frome, Somer- setshire, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street., March 19. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Description of JAMES WARD, charged with bur- glariously breaking aad entering the dwelling- house of James Kings, of Cradley, on the night of the 11th ultimo, and steaUng a quantity of Articles, since recovered : about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stoutly built, curly hair, and whiskers meeting under the chin ; dressed in grey coat and vest, cord trousers, and white hat; generally works as a mason's labourer, and ia a native of Worcester. Information to be given to Superintendent Harwood, Bromyard, Here- fordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension ; and his photograph can be had on application.— Bow- street, March 12. During the night of the 10th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. David French, Chatham, was broken and entered, * nd stolen therein : an electro- plated cruet Stand, with seven compartments ; two Tops of bottles ; two silver tea Spoons, marked ' J. M. F.'; a meerschaum Pipe ; and a pair of Wellington Boots, lately clumped, marked ' No. 3' inside of tops, which the offender is supposed to be wearing. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Con- stabulary, Chatham, Kent.— Buu- street, March 12. About 3 a. m. on the 9th instant some person or persons attempted to break and enter the dwelling- house of Mrs. James Chamberlain, of Old Catton, Norwich, by cutting a hole in a shutter with a centre bit, marks of a chisel were also seen on the shutter. Stolen from the person at Burbage, on the 12th instant a lady'fl small size double bottom consular gold Geneva Watch, No. 54780, with gold figures, a long gold guard Chain with very small links, trace pattern, attached. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretton, Wilts Con stabulary, Marlborough. — Bow- street, Mwxh 10. to be given to Superintendent Goldsmith, Taunton, Somerset- shire.— Bow- street, March 17. Description of a man who is charged with stealing a Bullock, since recovered, the property of J. Jones, of the Wells Farm, Cradley, near Malvern, on the 17th ult.: about 40yrs. of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, stoutly built, fair com- plexion, light hair and whiskers, and inclined to be sandy ; dressed in dark grey coat or jacket, light- coloured trousers, and new soft billycock hat. Has the appearance of a farm bailiff. Information to be given to Superintendent Harwood, Bromyard, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, March 12. HORSE AID CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on the 11th inst., from Lewis Grove, Lewisham : light spring Cart, Pony, and Harness; cart painted chocolate, picked out red, screw axle, containing two Sacks, marked ' H. P. E.' in a circle with black paint ; pony, dark mane and tail, 13 hands high, aged, very fat, rests off fore leg when standing by placing it to the front; harness brass- mounted. By three men, about 23 years of age, aud dressed in dark clothes.— Metropolitan Police, B Division, March 17. Stolen during the night of the 12th instant, from a field in Wordaworth- road, South Hornsey : a black riding Filly, rising 3 years, 13J hands high, star on forehead, three white feet, no shoes, long mane and tail, in good condition.— Metro- volitan Police, N Division, March 17. Description of a man giving the name of JOHN MARTIN, real name supposed to be CROSS, charged with stealing a Colt and Pony, the property of Mi. Porch, Bed- minster, on the night of the 11th instant, and which he endeavoured to dispose of at Wells on the 13th instant; he is about 25 years of age, about 5 feet high, very slightly built, rutlier fresh complexion, dark hair, small moustache, and little whiskers on chin, but may be shaved off, under jaw projects a little from the upper oue, small teeth very much discoloured ; dressed in long dark overcoat much worn, dark cord trousers, black stiff bowler hat, aud dark mixture necktie with pin. He has been seen travelling through the country selling flash jewellery, and repairing watches. £ 2 reward will be paid by Mr. Porch to any person who shall give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the accused. Description of CHARLES PITMAN, charged with obtaining a Horse, value £ 26 5s., by false pretences at Reading on the 1st ultimo : about 31 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, proportionate build, fresh complexion, dark hair, eyes, whiskers, and moustache ; respectably dressed, but of horsey appearance. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Purchase, Borough Police StatioD, Reading, Berks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— By- street, March 17. • Found at Boylestone, on the 18th ultimo, supposed stolen: two roan barren Twinters, 2 year olds, were numbered respectively ' 4 aud 9,' as if they had beeu sold at au auction sale. Information to be given to Superintendent Whieldon, Ashbourne, Derby, or to I napoctor Taylor, Church Broughton, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen between 8 and 9 p. m. on the 15th instant, from a stable at Gresley, the property of Richard Mee : a dark brown mare Pony, 14 hands high, 4 years old, has a small patch of white hair on the front of right hind foot, small wart on right eyelid, aud has been clipped ; the pony bad on a sack, cut open and lined with green, for a rug, and a new hempen halter. There was left behind iu the stable a hempeu Halter, about half worn and rather greasy about the middle. Information to be given to Superintendent Sharpe, Police Station, Woodville, near Burton- on- Treut. — Bow- street, March 17. Charged on a warrant with stealing a 2- year old Heifer from Ruiston, on the night of the 2nd instant, which he sold at Bridgewater Market ca the 3rd : a man, from 35 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches high, brown hair, small whiskers inclined to bo sandy, dark complexion, and inclined to stoop ; dressed in a black hard bowler hat, long brown cloth coat and vest, dark trousers with fly front, and heavy nailed lacc- up boota ; he gave the name of JOHN COOPER, of Yatton- road, Weston- super- Mare. Information LAECEN7 AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen on the 16th inst. from a bed- room at the Norfolk Hotel, Arundel, a lady's old- fashioned flat gold Geneva Watch, initials H. G. on outside case, with gold Chain attached ( small link pattern): by a man from 30 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, proportionate build, brown hair, whiskers and moustache; dressed in a black overcoat, dark brown vest and trousers, high black hat, and carried a black leather bag. Information to be given to Head Con- stable Robertson, Town Hall, Arundel, Sussex.— Bow- street, March 19. Absconded from South Shields, charged with embezzling £ 80 Is. : JOHN FOREMAN STOKER, clerk to a timber merchant, a native of South Shields, 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 inche3 high, stout build, face florid and often full of red pimples, blue eyes, very fair hair and moustache, no whiskers, rather sleepy looking, shortish nose, very red, speaks low, walks erect, usually very quickly, and is of gentlemanly appearance ; generally dressed in a fashionable grey suit and blue overcoat. £ 10 reward will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Richardson, South Shields, who holds a warrant,— Bow- itreet, March 19. Charged by a warrant with stealing £ 160 on the 15th inst. the monies of employers, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, Victoria Station, Manchester : HENRY RILEY BAXTER, a booking clerk, 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, rather slender, large light blue eyes, light hair and complexion, very little beard or whiskers, effeminate appearance, small mouth, teeth prominent, one in front broken and black ; usually dresses in a light suit. He is supposed to be accompanied by his wife, about the san e age and height. It is supposed that they will endeavour to leave the country. £ 10 reward will be paid upon his apprehen- sion and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given at the Detective Office, Cheapside, Manchester.— Bow- street, March 19. Absconded on the 15th instant, from Lichfield, charged ( on a warrant) with embezzling £ 1 12s. : a man who went in the name of WILLIAM WILDY, alias WM. WELDEN, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout build, broad red face, small sandy whiskers, and rather curly hair, turning grey; dressed iu fustian jacket, dark cord trousers with patch ou oue thigh, aud soft black billycock hat ; he is a thatcher aud gardener, and is supposed to have relatives living at Birmingham, Southampton, and Gloucester. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Hernaman, Lichfield, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 19. Absconded on the 1st instant, from Kentish Town- road, charged with embezzling £ 14 : EDWARD MAPSTEAD, 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in brown overcoat, dark trousers, and felt hat; a traveller. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, March 17. Absconded since the 6th instant, from Church- road, Battersea, charged with embezzling £ 1 16s. Sd., the monies of his employer : GUSTAVE ROBERT MOELCHARECK, 32 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, sallow complexion, light hair and whiaKers ( slight), very stout; dressed ( supposed) in dark clothes; speaks good Euglish with a German accent, aud is a native of Saxony. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, March 17. Absconded from Middlesborough, on the 27th ultimo, charged with embezzlement: MARK BROOMHEAD, a railway goods porter, 43 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark brown hair, large brown whiskers and moustache, but shaved under the chin, large ronian nose, slender make, acd stoops slightly ; dressed in a dark blue pilot jacket, black cloth trousers aud vest, now elastic- side boots, imitation seal- skin cap, blue necktie, with yellow flowers, and a puce and black stiiped shut ; be is a native of Hexthorpe, near Doucaster, and has been a soldier aud a tailor : frequents low public- houses, aud horse raca. He was at Woolwich en the 11th instant, and left there for London. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, York. — Bow- street, March 17. Stolen on the loth instant, from an hotel in Dewfbury : one lady's gold lever Watch, white face, No. 60S53, with gold Chain attached ; two gold Keys, oue plaiu and tl; e other had a topaz ; two gold Frauc Pieces, one five aud oue ten, and a small gold Hoop aud Compass; oue lady's gold Watch, No. 64379 aud 60353, " old Chain, gold Seal, gold Key, gold Pencilcase, aud a gold Key, Barwick, Keighley, engraved on it. By a man about 2S or 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, aud slight moustache ; dressed iu a dark suit, black billycock hat, and lace- np boots. Absconded early on the morning of the 15th mat. from a farm- heuse at Somerfordbooth, where he had been engaged as a servant, and slept in the bouse one night, stealing : one black cloth Jacket, one pair of grey- mixture Trousers with black Hote'., Farnham, on the 9th inst.: he is about 23 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark hair aud moustache, slightly made and of gentlemanly appearance, dressed in a dark suit and a round crown black felt hat, he is well known at Reading, also at the Arundel and Caledonian Hotels, Strand, London. Information to be given to Superintendent Newland, Surrey Constabulary, Farnham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension,— Bow- street, March 19. Description of a man who is endeavouring to place in circulation Forged Bonds of the Chicago and North Western Railway of America : he is 30 years ot age, 5 feet 7\ inches high, sallow complexion, slight build, no whiskers, slight dark brown moustache, rather long face with a troubled look, speaks slowly and low, and is dressed respectably ; has stripe down the legs, and a double- breasted vest of the j the appearance of an American. By a man, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 or S inches high ; dressed in a dark suit, with a gold breast pin in his scarf, no whiskers or moustache. Charged ( on a warrant), with fraud : JOHN ELPHIN- STONE, late of 8, Manor- place, Holloway, 26 to 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, flushed face, small eyes, dark whiskers aud moustache, rather slouching gait, aud limps slightly ; dressed respectably. ANDREWS, alias ANDERSON, late of 8, Manor- place, Holloway, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, black hair and whiskers, small eyes, dark eyebrows, flushed face, short neck, and rather round- shouldered ; dressed respectably. Description of a woman calling herself JANE COOKE, about 28 years of age, fair complexion, light hair, full face, and about 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high ; dressed in a grey dress Absconded on the 1st instant, from Liverpool, charged 1 and black hat; and a man calling himself J. COOKE, about with embezzling £' 5,000 : EDWARD JOHN BARRY, , 32 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair, cashier to a firm of timber brokers, a native of Liverpool, from 34 to 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather stout, square shoulders, full face, small lump on right eye- brow, left eye shot out, gunpowder marks over the face, more particularly on left cheek and nose, also under left eye, has a glass eye, wears blue spectacles, red- brown hair, parted in the centre, and whiskers and moustache same colour. He walks erect, and is of gentlemanly appearance ; and dressed in an Ulster overcoat. £ 100 reward will be paid by his employers, viz., £ 50 for his arrest, and the remainder for the recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Charged on a warrant with larceny : LOUIS PHILIP CROSS, late of 2, Derby Cottages, London- road, Plaistow, Essex, 36 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, brown- grey hair, brown whiskers and moustache, grey eyes, fair complexion, slightly high shouldered, a somewhat stooping gait, front top tooth deficient, rather slender build, and is a commercial traveller. JOHN KEMP, late of 224, Euston- road, 33 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, sallow complexion, brown eyes, thin Description of WILLIAM SMITH, alias DOOLER, a stonemason, who has absconded : he is about 28 years of age, dark straight hair and whiskers, small moustache, large high about, 5 feet 7 inches high, square build, fair complexion, aud whiskers and moustache ; dressed in a brown overcoat, and dark fur cap ; are charged with having obtained on the 27th ultimo one ton of salted Cod Fish, value £ 16, by false pre- tences, from G. P. Ward, of Teignmouth. The parties at the time were located at Andover, and had procured a cheque book from the Andover Branoh of the Hampshire Banking Company, where they had a small deposit, and forwarded one cheque to Mr. Ward, which was honored, but a second cheque was returned marked ' not provided for.' It has been ascer- tained that the parties had been living at a public house in Andover for about ten days, aud that on receiving the fish, re- consigned one portion to Mr. Smith, at Salisbury, and quitted Andover themselves for Salisbury the same day. Information to be given to Superintendent Moore, Devon Constabulary, Chudleigh; or to Sergeant Knight, Police Station, Teignmouth, Devonshire, who holds the warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, Aicrch 12. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. square shoulders, broad chest, a deep scar left forefinger, warts on right hand, a swaggering gait, and a clerk. JOHN ROBERTS, 1, Catmore- buildings, Buckingham- palace- road, Pimlico, a Welshman, 32 years of age, 5 ft. 5 ins. high, stumpy figure, thick dark red hair, beard and moustache, rather fresh colour, restless manner, and snuffles after speak- ing, and is a warehouseman. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, March 12. Stolen on the 5th instant, from the dwelling- house of John Hindmarch, at Sunderland Bridge : a silver lever Watch, No. 16603, maker E. Fryde, Sunderland, had a gold plated Albert Guard, short round links, and small round Locket attached. By JOSEPH BENT, alias BERRARD, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes and hair, slight moustache and whiskers round the face ; dressed in blue coat, fustian trousers and vest, hard felt hat, and elastic- side boots ; he is generally employed as blacksmith or striker about collieries. Also stolen, on the 6th instant, at Willington, the property of Miles Newton : a silver lever Watch, No. 18065, has ' Thomas Wakefield' on dial and works. Information to be given to Superintendent Dunn, County Constabulary Office, Durham.— Bow- street, March 12. Absconded from Windsor, cn the 8th instant, charged on a warrant with embezzling large sums of Money : THOS. HOLDMAY, a solicitor's clerk, about 40 years of age, looks younger, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, very dark hair, cut short, moustache, stout make, small feet and hands ; he is very fond of singing, has left a wife and eight children destitute, and has friends living at Bedford. Information to be given to Superintendent Hayes, Police Office, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- street, March 12. A warrant of commitment for 6 months imprisonment with hard labour, in Ipswich Gaol, is issued against him for assaulting and threatening to murder Joseph Hedington, Head Constable of the borough of Southwold ; he has been frequently convicted, and is an associate of peacbers, and is now supposed to be in the locality of Lowestoft ; he frequently goes fishing. Description of a man found in a field at Scawby. with his throat cut on the 9th instant: about 60 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, sallow complexion, grey eyes, hair, aud whiskers, and bald on top of head ; dressed in woollen cord trousers and vest, cotton cord jacket, lined with same kind of checked material as is used for lining horse collars, large white bone buttons, blue worsted cap with peak and knob at top, grey cloth shirt, brown worsted stockings, lace half boots, aud checked scarf, all nearly new. Part of a white slop was found near to where he had been seen shortly before he com- mitted suicide.
