Absconded from Thirsk on the Cth instant, charged with stealing a Spade aud a pair of Pruning Shears, which have been recovered : a tramping gardener, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, turning grey, rather bald on top of head, stoutly made, is supposed to be a native of the neighbouihood of London, is very talkative, and very fond of drink ; dressed in a long brown coat with blue pilot jacket underneath, old dark trousers, and black billycock hat with sharp top ; he is a good workman, frequents common lodging- houses, is most likely to be found at some nurserv, has woiked at almost the name of ' Mathews, Watchmaker, Uckfield,' ou them, a common Guard Chain and Key attached. By a man, about 19 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, fe w whiskers, and slight figure; dressed iu a black jacket, striped trousers, mended at bottom, light boots, and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Super- intendent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, February 8. Stolen from a blacksmith's shop at Lea Bridge, Salop, about 2 p. m. ou the 4th instant: a pair of watertight Boots ( since recovered). By a tramping labourer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, brown hair, pale face, and large nose; dressed in a jimcrow hat, old drab- coloured plaid jacket, dirty white slop, two old waistcoats ( one dark, the other light- coloured, very much faded), aud cord trousers ; he was traced to near Newcastle on the 5th instaut; he said he had come from Meiford, where he hail been at work with a timber waggon, aud wished to get to Newcastle ; he speak? the Welsh language. Absconded from Pontypridd, Glamorganshire, on the lst, charged with stealing about £ 50, the propertv of Mr. John Jenkins, butcher : EDWARD GREYHAM McCORD, an ironmonger's assistant, 21 years of age, about 5 feet 6 ins. high, fair complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, small light moustache, round face, of smart appearance and slight build ; dressed in grey cloth suit, black bowler hat, and elastic- side boot*. He is a native of Cardigan town. He is accompanied by the wife of the above John Jenkins ; she is £ 5 years of age, 5 feet 1 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair, large eyes, scar over one of her eyebrows, both little fingers rather crooked, three gold rings on third finger of left hand, tbiu long face, and slight build ; dressed in a black felt hat. 4 P O L I C E GAZETTE. February 2( 5. trimmed with plaid scarf, dark Welsh flannel dress with small white stripe lengthwise, black cloth jacket trimmed with brown beaver, and wears ear- drops. She took with her a light- bine plaid silk dress, and can speak Welsh and English fluently. Information to be given to Superintendent Matthews, Pontypridd, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, February 8. Stolen from a saddle- room in the Barrack Tavern Yard, in the parish of Gate Fulford, cn the 1st instant : two plaid linen Shirts; one grey cloth Vest with white pearl buttons and watch pocket in left side ; several linen Collars, marked ' W. M.' inside; and a steel Burnisher. By a youth who had been assisting in the stables a few days, about 5 feet 2 inches high, about ID years of age, has the appearanca of a groom, and speaks with a London acccnt : dressed in a grey mixture jacket, the stolen vest, a pair of dark cloth trousers, and round black hat. Information to be given to Inspector Gibson, East Riding Constabulary, Escrick, Yorkshire.-— Bovj- street, Ftbruari/ 8. Absconded from Westergate, near Chichester, on the 28th ultimo, charged with embezzling various sums of money belonging to Wm. Morris, of Aldingbourne, a baker: ALBERT CAIGER, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, light hair, blue eyes, very few whiskers ; dressed in black coat, pockets at sides, dark grey trousers, with stripes, and waistcoat of same material, black necktie, and black hat, with band. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Pratt, West Sussex Constabulary, Chichester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— liuui- street, February 5. Description of WILLIAM CROPLEY, who absconded from the Whittlesey Workhouse, on tke 22nd ultimo, taking and carrying away with him a suit of Clothes, the property of the Guardians: about 67 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, walks erect, but is somewhat lame having large varicose veins in one leg, rather stout, light hair and whiskers, turning grey, and light complexion; dressed in a dark beaverteeu frock coat, single- breasted, with pocket inside left breast, trousers and vest of same material, all branded inside ' Wy. U.', the shirt is marked in a similar manner with ink., blncher boots, and rather low- crowned dark hat. He has been a waterman, aud has worked at wharves unloading ships, & e., and may be found at similar work in some port town. Information to be given to Inspector Burrows, Whittlesey, Isle of Ely, Cambs, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 5. Absconded from Blackburn, charged with stealing Watches, Overcoats, & c. ( together with Ambrose Tattersall, who is remanded until the 9th iust) : WILLIAM WANOP, alias WILLIAM FLANNAGHAN, alias WM. SMITH, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, full light or sandy moustache, no whiskeis, thin face, Roman nose ; dressed in a blue Chesterfield over- coat, with several pockets outside and inside, light shooting coat and vest, dark tight trousers, low shoes, aud silk hat; has also a dark coat and vest, light trousers, and soft billy- cock hat; carries a straw bass with him, often with a hand- kerchief tied round it, and sometimes a paper parcel. He is in possession of a quantity of watches, seals, brooches, & c., which he carries in his overcoat pockets ; be is a very good engraver; was convicted in Carlisle about four years ago, has been in a reformatory school ( supposed Netherton, Northumberland), and frequents Manchester, Preston, Lancaster, Barrow, Carlisle, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, Dumfries, and Dundee; he is a native of Newcastle- upon- Tyne, and a gilder by trade. Description of AMBROSE TATTERSALL, alias WM. BRIGGS, alias WILLIAM VEEVERS : a french polisher, and a native of Clitheroe, Lancashire, 21 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate make, oval face, light brown hair, no whiskers or beard, fair complexion, ' T.' on left hand, ring mark on forefinger of left hand, tattooed between thumb and first finger of left hand, right little finger deformed, and ' M. A.' on upper left arm; dressed respectably; he was convicted at Manchester Assizes three or four years ago for stealing a watch at Salford ; also at Carlisle Assizes of highway robbery, together with Mary Elizabeth Wallace, and sentenced to 12 months ; has frequented all the towns mentioned as being fiequented by Wanop, and he is now charged with nine different larcenies. Information to be given to Chief Constable Potts, Police Office, Town Hall, Blackburn, Lancashire. — Bow- street, February 5. Description of two men who on the 16th ultimo stole from the Culham Station of the Great Western Railway a Portmanteau, and having taken out the contents, left it in a field : one respectably dressed in a suit of Oxford mixture cloth, about 5 feet 6 inches high, and wore a round felt hat; the other dressed in a round pilot coat, and a shorter man. The following Articles were stolen from the portmanteau : a s suit of Clothes ; hunting Boots, Tops and Spurs; a pair of cord Breeches ; a pair of brown Breeches and Gaiters; a pair of Trousers ; a box of Cigars; a small Flask ; two Prayer Books, the name of ' Amphlett' written in them ; two Waistcoats; a morning Coat; six pairs of worsted Socks ; four pairs of cotton ditto ; a hunting Flask, with crest engraved on it, & c. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Mason, Special Police, Great Western Railway, Paddington, London, W.— Bow- street, February 5. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. £ 100 reward is offered by the Trustees under the Bank ruptcy for the apprehension of SUTTON JOHN ELLIOTT, solicitor, who absconded from Portsmouth, charged with fraudulent bankruptcy, as advertised in the Police Gazette of October last. Information to be given to ilead Constable Barber, Portsmouth, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, February 10. Description of a man who obtained at Linton, on the 6th instant, £ 8 4s., by giving a false chcque for that amount, upon Messrs. Foster and Company, of Cambridge, made payable to Mr. Thomas Webb, Hildersham, or bearer, signed Thos. Barnard, the cheque was crossed : about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, rather stout build, full face, grey whiskers and moustache, puffy about the eyes, and has a slight scar on one cheek ; dressed in shabby clothing, con- sisting of black high hat, brown speckled coat, dark vest and trousers, and carried a leather bag. He frequents hotels and represents himself to be a commercial man, he applies for change for a - cheque made payable to a person of respectability residing in the neighbourhood. Information to be given to Superintendent Long. Police Station, Linton, C'ambs.— Bwi- sireet, February 8, MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Remanded until the 16th instant, for stealing a quantity of Drapery Goods from the Midland Railway Station at Burtou- on- Trent : JOHN CHALLINGWORTH, boiler- maker, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, proportionate figure, round face, dark complexion, and no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in a black hard felt hat, brown overcoat, dark coat and waistcoat, grey trousers, Scotch mixture, and elastic- side boots. He states that his parents reside at King's Hill, between Darlaston aud Wednesburv, Staffordshire. And AMOS BROWN, 20 years of age, about 5 feet 3 ins. high, proportionate figure, dark brown hair, round face, fresh complexion, and no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in black hard felt hat, dark tweed coat, black waistcoat, grey trousers, Scotch mixture, and elastic- side boots, black fronts. He gave the following address, Mr. G. Jones, No. 15, Smith- street, Whitechapel, London. The above- named persons are suspected of stealing upwards of 400 yards of Shirting, a quantity of Hosiery, & c., which have been traced to their possession, and may now be seen at the Police Office, Burton- ou- Trent.
