Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the £ ditor must l » e prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forir. s 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Information to be given to Head Constable Songhurst, Barnstaple, Devon. — bow- street, January 4. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY wounding-. A warrant: haa been issued for the apprehension of EMILY RICHARDS, of, Carnon Downs, in the parish of Kenwyn, Cornwall, for the wilful murder of a child 1 month old, by throwing it down a shaft. At the inquest a verdict of Wilful Murder was returned. She ia the wife of Thomas Pdchards, who has been abroad some years, and is 29 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, and has false upper and lower front teeth ; Greased in black hat with black fall, and dark sealskin jacket; ia sup- posed to be in London, and will probably try to emigrate, representing herself to be a widow. Information to be given to Superintendent Marshall, Truro, Cornwall.— Bow- stree', January 6'. About 1 p. m. on the 30th ultimo, the dead body of a full grown female child, was found in the vault of a privy, at colne, Huntingdon, wrapped in a portion of the Peterboro' Advertiser. At the inquest, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Superintendent Spencer, Police Station, St. Ives, Hunts.— Bow- street, January 4. About noon on the 21st instant the dead body of a full- grown female Child wa3 found in a dike in Peterborough wrapped in new unbleached calico, black wadding and brown paper, a piece of black braid was tound tied tightly round the child's neck. At the inquest a verdict was returned of Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Police station, Peterborough, Northamptonshire.— Bow- st., Jan. 1. EUKGIAEY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Description of CHARLES WOOD, alias WINTER- BOTTOM, charged with breaking into a shop, in Sheffield, on the night of the 30th ultimo : he is about 37 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, has a large mark on lip, is pockpitted, a weaver, and a native of Glossop or Manchester. He was apprehended on the 5th of January, 1869, at the Glossop Station, for house- breaking at Blackburn, near Rotherharu, and convicted and sentenced to 18 mouths hard labour at the following West Riding Spring Assizes. He is supposed to be accompanied by a woman who was couvicted at Sheffield Sessions, 9th April, 1866, for being in possession of counterfeit coin, and was sentenced to 5 years penal servitude : - she is 26 years of age, 5 feet inch high, fresh complexion, auburn hair, light grey eyes, short broad face, small sunken eyes, and thick lips. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 6. Stolen by means of housebreaking between the 23rd ult., and 1st instant, at Hollington, near Hastings : two Blankets; a cotton Sheet: four chamber Towels ; a white jean Vest; two white marcella children's Jackets, old; an alpaca Polannaise, trimmed with black silk velvet ; a grey Llama Skirt, trimmed with blue braid ; a lavender muslin Skirt, old; an old black silk Jacket; two children's old cotton Frocks; four children's Petticoats, old: a brown silk Umbrella, with ivory handle ; a pair of man's old side- spring Boots ; a pair of woman's Goloshes ; a copper Kettle, without lid ; and a linen travelling Bag. By a man who pledged some of the stolen property at Hastings, on the 30th ultimo : about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout, a labourer; dressed in a dark jacket, with white slop under- neath, and a dark cap. Information to be given at the Constabulary Office, Lawes, to Superintendent Jenner, Police Station, Court House, Battle, or any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, January 4. During the night of the 22nd instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Carrills, Wollaton, near Nottingham, was broken and entered by two men, and it is believed that one or both of them was wounded wnile making their escape . through the window by shots from a revolver : one is a stout man. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable j Palethorpe, County Police Station, Nottingham.— Bou- sircei, December 30. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person on the 24th ultimo : a silver Geneva Watch, chased flowered back, very small, No. 727. Also stolen from the person on the 25th ultimo : a silver Geneva Watch, No. 415, has a yellow stripe round the dial, and had attached a gold plated albert Guard and Locket. Also stolen from the person on the 29th ultimo : a gold Locket, oval shape, wheat- sheaf on one side, contains the photo of a gentleman, had attached a thin necklet Chain, with small balls ; a pair of gold Ear- rings, chased, and set with green stones, and a pair of plated Ear- rings. And also stolen from the person on the 1st instant: a silver lever Watch, gold hinges, plain back, ' J. S.' engraved on outer case, ' J. Shorrock' on dial, maker ' T. Bennett, Preston' on works. Information to be given to Chief Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lancashire,— Bow- street, January 6. Stolen in Bolton : * On the 1st instant, from the person of a gentleman : a jilver lever Watch, No. 36073, maker Samuel Greenhough, Bolton, had attached a gold curb Chain, with Seal and Key. Also from the person on the 1st instant: a silver verge Watch, No. 227, maker Thomas Lee, Bury, and has J J. Harrison' engraved inside the case. Also from the person of a gentleman on the 2nd instant: a silver lever Watch, with cream- colpured dial, on which is the name ' J. Smith,' No. 16685. Also stolen on the 31st ultimo, from a public- house in Bolton: a dark green cloth Overcoat, with black velvet collar, has four pockets outside with flaps over them, black covered buttons, and lined with black serge. By a female servant, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout made, fresh complexion, red nose, and addicted to drink; usually dressed in dark grey winsey dress, black bonnet, with red nower, and dark grey cloak. She is also charged with stealing a Watch, & c. ( recovered). Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Borough Police Offices, Town Hall, Bolton- le- Moots, Lancashire.— Bow- street, January 6. Stolen from the person on the 24th ultimo, at Barn- staple : an open- f8ce silver lever Watch, maker John Gaydon, Barnstaple, No, 16015, capped; and gold Albert HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen between the 3id and 6th ultimo, from a lield at Ousby, near Penrith, Cumberland : a 3- year- old black- faced fat wether Sheep, marked with the letter ' O' on the near hock, the letters ' IN ' and the figure ' 1' burnt in the horns, and the letter ' O' burnt in the face. Also stolen, on the night of the 25th ultimo, from a field at Great Salkeld, near Penrith, Cumberland : a fat shearling I Leicester tup Sheep, about 20 lbs. per quarter, marked on the j near side with the letter ' N,' but nearly obliterated, i Information to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumber- land. — Bow- street, January 8. Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from Chigwell Row : a bay- Mare, a set of Harness, a Cart, a Coat, a Rug, and a Whip. — Metropolitan Police, N Division, January 4. Further information respecting the three Hereford Heifers, stolen from Morehampton Park, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 16th instant : they were missed on the 1st instant, and not on the 11th instant, as before stated. Any person giving such information that will lead to their recovery, and conviction of the offender or offenders, will be haudsomly rewarded. Stolen from a stable at Bradford Farin, Witheridge, about 6 p. m. on the 26th instant: a b'ght bay cart Mare, 6 years old, lately clipped, in fair condition, 144 hands high, hind lega white, one white forefoot, white face," and the fore feet turn out. Stolen between the 10th ultimp and the 1st instant, from Grenville- street, Brunswick- square : a lady's gold Watch, No. 5031, private mark ' 47 G ;' a lady's gold Chain, flat link pattern, fastened with yellow silk near swivel; a grey alpaca Skirt ; a cashmere Cloak, trimmed with black lace ; " a black cloth double Cape, with sleeves : and a black silk Skirt. By two French won- en ( mother and dauglitei) : the formev 49 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, pale complexion, whfte haii' ; dressed in black ; and the latter 21 years of age, & feet 4 inches high, sallow complexion, light hair, wears spectacles; dressed ki black dress and hat,— Metropolitan Police, E Divi- sion, January 8, Description of JOHN WHITTINGHAM, charged with stealing three Fowls ( recovered), the property of W. R. Norcop, Esq., of Betton House, Market Drayton, on the lat instant : about 20 yeaTS of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, brown hair, fair complexion, no beard or whiskers ; dressed in dark coat, light- coloured trousers, white tie, and low hard hat; he is a native of Stone, Staffordshire, and a tailor, but has lately been employed as cellarinan at an hotel at Stoke- upon- Trent, and as footman at Betton House. Information 1o be given to Superintendent Haines, Whitchuich, or to Sergeant Ho wells, Market Drayton, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 8. Description of EDWARD YOUNG, alias GEOEGE BROWN, a native of Bradford, Wilts, charged with stealing, on the 25th ultimo, at Radstock, a cloth Jacket, a black monkey Jacket, a pair of lace- up Boots with brass eyelets, and a new sealskin Cap, tied up at the side, the property of George Parfitt : IS or 19 years - ti age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slight build, fresh complexion, and dark hair cut short ; he is a deserter from the 37th Brigade Depot. Information to be given to Superintendent Deggan, Frome, or to Police Constable Lewis, Radstock, Somersetshire, who holds a war- rant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 8. Stolen from Market Drayton, on the 6th instant : a new double- breasted short pilot cloth Jacket, bound with braid, velvet collar, red and black plaid linisg, horn buttons; a double- breasted Vest of same material, bound with braid ; and a pair of watertight Boots, No. 6 size, brass eyelets, double row of nails round outside, and three rows in centre, nearly new. Bv a trampiDg cooper, who gave his name GEORGE ALBERT SKELLEY, about 30Jyears of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, brown hair, pale swarthy com- plexion, no beard or whiskers, and dark moustache ; iie has tramped about the country a good deal, but has resided in Drayton during the last five months. Information to be given ta Superintendent Haines, Whitchurch, or to Sergeant Howell*, Market Drayton, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, January 8. S'olen from a lodging- house at Rugeley, on the night of the 6th instant : a pair of blucher Boots and an old verge Watch, No. 3325. By a tramp, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 cr 7 inches high, and no whiskers ; dressed in velveteen jacket, cord waistcoat, old moleskin trousers, and billycock hat. He will probably be wearing the stolen boots, having left an old pair behind. Information to be given to Sergeant Johns, Police Cffice, Rugeley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 8. Description of PATRICK, alias JOHN JOYCE, a bricklayer, charged with stealing a Turkey ( recovered) at Whitby : 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair, slight moustache, no whiskers, aud walks erect; dressed in a blue piiot jacket, double- breasted cloth vest, woollen cord trousers, white muffler, elastic- side boots, and stiff hat. He is a native of Whitby, but of Irish parents, has relatives residing at Liver- pool, Preston, Wakefield, York, Redcar, Gateshead, and Newcastle- upon- Tyne. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 6. Absconded, charged with stealing I5s. 7id., the monies of his master at Wadhurst, on the 28th ultimo : DANIEL SOPSHEAD, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion and hair, very slight dark moustache, stout figure, aud is a labourer ; dressed in cord jacket and trousers, cloth cap, and supposed to be wearing a grey Militia overcoat, with red collar, and a band across the back. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January ( i. Absconded on the 18th ultimo, charged on a warran with stealing two suits of Clothes, oue black mixture, aud on white check : WILLIAM SMITH, a groom, 25 years of age 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, small whiskers ; he is a native of Reading, and has been in service at Ryde, Isle of Wight. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Town Hall, Folkestone, Kent.— Bow- sireat, Jan. 1. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Angus Griffiths, Ironville, in the cbnnty of Derby, on the 24th instant: dark blue pilot Jacket, with black horn buttons, double breasted, and bound with black worsted braid, and a round hard black Hat. By a lodger named JOHN GAMBLE, o Wigston, Leicester, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark brown hair and moustache ; dressed in pepper- and- salt coloured jacket, cord trousers, fly fronts, and is supposed to be wearing the stolen jacket over his own. He has travelled about the country with a shooting gallery. He is accompanied by his wife and a little boy : she is vis. of a ' e, 6 feet high, fair complexion, light hair, and sto-. it build ; dressed in old cotton dress, grey shawl, and old bVack bonnet: the boy is about 3 years old, aud has light curly bait. Description of JOHN WILKINSON, alias GEORGE SMITH, a groom or coachman, charged with obtaining twc pairs of Boots, by false pretences, from the boot- shop of Sarah Dew, at hitchin, ou the 15th ultimo : he is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, rather dark slight whiskers; dressed in black clothes^ black high hat, and carries a cane; he has an active jockey- like appeavauce; Information to be given to Inspector Young, Hitclitu, Herts, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— B- ow street, January 4. Description of JAMES SMITH, alias CONNER, who travels about the country performing sleight- of- hand tricks at public- houses, and who was convicted at Newport Petty Sessions, and sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment, for stealing 2s. Cd. : 60 years of age, 5 feet iuclies high, swarthy com- plexion, grey hair and eyes; he is an Irishman, and states that he is a* tinman or trench polisher. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop.— Bow- street, January 8. Description of a man giving the name of HERBERT WILSON, a clerk, remanded at Coventry, charged with stealing an Overcoat, ou the 5th instant : 28 yea. s of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown eyes, dark hair and moustache, whiskers at sides of face aud chin shaved, rather sharp appearance, has a large scar centre of breast, and a'slight varicose vein on the back of left kuee ; dressed in a suit of brown and red Scotch mixture cloth, double- breasted coat and vest, with the name ou coat ' Moses & Sou, Minories,' light grey loose overcoat, white calico shirt, two grey woollen under shirts, marked ' H. W.', white linen front, collar, and cuffs, plated studs, black silk knot necktie, lace- up boots, and black billycock hat. In his possession were found a new Mortice Chisel, maker ' Sorby,' ijfid a black leather Portmanteau, bound with brass, the lock of which had been forced, containing a pair of men's patent leather shoes, lined with red, a lady's small black leather Satchel, stitched with gieen, & c. Absconded from Ely, on the 25th instant, charged with assaultiug Police Constable Alfred Ellistone, and doing him grievous bodily harm on the 24th ultimo: JONATHAN LEMON, of Ely, a labourer, belonging to the Army Reserve, about 24 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, light hair, no whiskers, small moustache, blue or grey eyes, fair face, and small mole ou right cheek,; dressed iu a black chummy hat and pilot jacket, or light moleskin suit and WILLIAM WAYMAN, alias DOBOR. of Ely, enlisted, he was summarily cor. victed of larceny at Cambridge. About 2 30 a. m. of the 1st instant, the dead body of a newly- bom full- grown female Child was found in a 3rd class railway carriage of the Great Northern Railway Company, which arrived at the Great Grimsby Town Station from London at 8' 55 p. m. on the 31st ultimo, wrapped up in a piece Of old tlauuel petticoat^ then made up like a parcel in a square of brown paper, and tied with a string. At the inquest an open verdict was returned. Information to be given to Head Constable Campbell, Town Hall, Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, January 4. Description of JOSEPH HEMMINGS, alias HENRY HEVINS, alias EVANS, in custody at Crewe Police Station, charged with stealing a gold Watch ( recovered) from the person of a gentleman at Crewe Railway . Station at 1 a. m. on the 31st ultimo : he first stated that he was a machinist but has since stated that he is a cotton spinnei', 18 yeart of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slender make, brown hair, grey eyes, fair complexion, round features, no whiskers or moustache, has a seal on back of right wrist, mote on right side of top lip, mole on right cheek, small seal on left side of neck, and a scar on right side of forehead ; dressed iu a ribbed blue cloth double- breasted jacket, bound with dark green braid, buttons covered with the same material, pocket outside each skirt, and one inside right breast, a pair of drab striped tweed trousers, double- breasted vest of same material, black horn buttons, anew puce and black woollen plaid shirt, white silk neckerchief, hard felt hat, white ribbed cotton socks, light watertight boots, brass eyelet- holes, and a new double- breasted brown cloth overcoat, buttons covered with same material, lined with dark alpaca, pocket outside each skirt, ticket pocket, aud one inside left breast. Had in his possession a dark- handle Knife, has two blades, German silver shoulders, a small piece of German silver let in one side of handle, and ' W. Spooner' scratched on the handle j a 9- carat gold Ring, set with a dark brown stone; two fancy imitation geld aibert Chains ; and a brass Check, with' Allen, Everett, and Sons, Kingston Metal Works,' round it, and ' 149' in the middle, attached to a common brass albert Chain ; three Sovereigns, 2s. 6d. in Silver, and 7d. Copper. He states that he was born in Oxford, and that he and his relatives lodge with a cotton spinner at Water- side, Bacup, Lancashire; that he works at Water- side Mill, Bacup, and that he has . worked at the Co- operative Mill, Bacup; he also states that he left Bacup on Christmas- eve and went to Birmingham 011 a visit to his uucle, a labourer, residing at Acorn Inn, Public- house- yard, Oxford- street, Birmingham. Information to be given to Superintendent Saxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Morris, Crewe, Cheshire, who will send a photograph on application.— Bow- street, January 4. Description of WILLIAM HELSEY, remanded at Worcester to the 6th instant on suspicion of having stolen an unfinished Night- dress, trimmed with tatting : about 19 yrs. of age, 5 feet 5£ inches high, dark hair, dark eyes, and fresh complexion, has lost third finger of right hand. Iu his pos- session were Pawn- tickets for the following Articles : a new reefer Jacket, bound with braid, sleeves lined with scarlet, : and in the pocket was a piece <> f tobacco- paper marked ' R. white, and red Muffler. Remanded until the 6th proximo, charged with larceny at Donington on Bain, Lincolnshire: GEORGE WEBB, of Kencott, Oxfordshire,) 45 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, turning grey, dark brown eyes, and a scar on back of left hand.
