Absconded, charged with assaulting a Constable at Jedburgh, to the danger of life, on the evening of the 6th instant : HUGH M'LEVY, a labourer, a native of Jedburgh, • of Irish extraction, 27 years of age, 5 feet 9) t inches high, dark hair, cut short, beard aud whiskers shaved off, full round face, thick neck, dark eyes, ruddy complexion, stout make ; generally dressed on Sundays in suit of dark tweed, shooting coat, vest, and trousers, and grey tweed cap, with peak covered with same material, and on week days in ordi- nary labourer's clothes, white moleskin trousers, and strong lace- up boots, uew ; he is a poacher, and spends his money freely in drink ; he has been traced to Durham, and is sup- posed to be in Yorkshire. Stolen between 11 p. m. and 6 a. m. on the 4th instant, from the dwelling- house of Charles Christie, Jerroise- street, Westbromwich, by housebreaking : a blue diagonal walking Coat, double- breasted, two side pockets, ticket pocket, aud inside breast pocket, ' Alfred Kino, Lombard- street, London' on collar ; a yellow mixture tweed walking Coat, two outside pockets with lappets, ticket pocket, and inside breast pocket, ' Alfred Kino, Lombard- street, London' on collar; a boy's blue Petersham Overcoat, velvet collar, two side pockets, and inside breast pocket, ' Moses and Sons, Minories' ou collar; a dark shaggy drab Overcoat, man's size, black velvet collar, two side pockets and ticket pocket, ' Attneave, London' supposed on collar, Jin the ticket pocket was a Half Sovereign, and in one of the side pockets was a meerschaum Pipe, amber mouth- piece, in two parts, chased silver mounting, Garabaldian head, with amber eyes; a red and black check tableJCover ; three calico Sheets, supposed marked ' Christie;' a woman's night] Dress ; a baby's night Dress; a pillow Case ; and a boy's tweed Vest. The house of Henry Hicks,' of Peterborough, was broken into, supposed by tramps, between 2' 30 and 11 ' 30 p. m. on the 3rd instant, and stolen therein : a silver lever Watch, makers Dold & Co., Peterborough, whito dial; a silver albert Chain, with Seal and Key attached, snake pattern, the seal minus the stone ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, fly fronts ; a dark Vest, with light spot3 ; two white linen Collars, supposed 14£ size ; a white linen Front, with three plaits, made for studs; two coloured Fronts, with collars; a grey mixture waterproof Cloak, with a pocket on each side, ami two buttons on each pccket, buttons down the front; a lady's double- breasted Jacket, with large glass buttons on breast, one on each sleeve, and two behind, roll black velveteen collar, fastened back with a button on each side; a white calico Chemise, rather high in the neck, with narrow braid edging round top and sleeves. Stolen in Leeds by means of housebreaking, between 5 faet 6 inches high, dark complexion, slight whiskers, very full eyes, andrather round- shouldered ; visits fairs and large markets in the West of England with lew horse dealers. LANGHAM, supposed to belong to Newport, aud to be well known in Cardiff; wore & blue doth monkey jacket, dirty moleskin trousers, cap with peak, and militia boots. Ir formation to be given to Super- intendent Wheeldon, Monmouth Borough Police.— Bow- street, October 7* Absoonded from South Shields, on the 28th ultimo, charged with stealing £ 34, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been granted : JOHN CAMPBELL, alias MARTIN GAFFNEY, 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, full round face, no whiskers or moustache, stoutly made, walks with a crutch and stick, his left foot being deformed ; dressed in a blue monkey jacket, black trousers and vest • he generally hawks caps, & c., in a large basket, lias a pedlar's certificate granted in the name of Michael Gaffney, at South Shields, on the 2nd January, 1874. He may be accompanied by his wife, who also has a pedlar's certificate, granted on the same date. Further information respecting WILLIAM POSTANS ( advertised in Police Gazette of the 16th ultimo), who absconded from Cleobury Mortimer, charged with stealing £ 3 6s. 6d., belonging to Mr. John Potter, his employer. He is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, sallow complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, and a seal on each shoulder blade ; dressed in brown tweed coat and vest, new cotton cord trou- sers, black jimcrow hat, grey cotton mixture shirt, purple and black scarf, and old side- spring boots ; has a dirty appearance, and has a relative residing at Pensnett, near Brierley Hill, Staffordshire; has also worked in Birmingham. Was con- victed at Hereford in 1659 of larceny, and sentenced to four months ; June 20, 1870, disorderly pauper, one month ; com- mitted from Cleobury Mortimer to Salop Gaol, October, 1869, of larceny for six weeks; August, 1870, as a rogue and vagabond for 14 days ; May 23, 1871, as a disorderly pauper for 21 days ; October 20, 1871, as a disorderly pauper for one month ; May 3, 1873, as a rogue and vagabond for seven days; Statlordshire Quarter Sessions June 30, 1873, of larceny at Pensnett, for three months and five years police supervision from the 29th September, 1873. Information to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Sergeant Collis, Cleobury Mortimer, Salop, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 7. Description of a man and woman charged with stealing from the dwelling house of John Smith, chimney sweep, at Caistor, on the 28th ultimo : a silver Geneva watch, rather- flat, yellow face, with seconds hand ; and 14 yards of Calico : JAMES TURNER, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark hair, thin at top of head, sandy moustache, whiskers shaved off, and bow- legged ; a miner, supposed to belong to the neighbourhood of Leeds or Pontefract; may be dressed in a black cloth suit, or light cord trousers, pepper- and- salt coat, and stiff black billycock hat; and ANNIE SMITH, daughter of the above John Smith, 24 years of age, about 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, light brown hair, fresh complexion, and good looking ; has a green dress, and a black hat with a bird on it, or a white hat. They took the son of Annie Smith with them, 4 years of age, stout build, full • white face, and dark hail ; has a pepper- and- salt suit, also a a holland tunic, fustian trousers, and black cap. They also took with them a papered trunk, a painted and varnished box, and a bundle. Information to be given to Superintendent Danby, Brigg, Lincolnshire, who holds warrants for their apprehension. - Bow- street, October 7. Description of HENRY MUSHGROVE, charged at Sandbach with stealing a piece of Bacon, and a tin of Biscuits, on the 29th ultimo ( with another man in custody) : 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light hair and com- plexion, and has a fresh bruise on his nose ; dressed in a dark cloth jacket, cord trousers, cap, and white muffler ; he works in brick yards, and belongs to the 2nd Cheshire Militia. Information to be given to Superintendent rowbottom, Con- stabulary Station, Middlewich, or to Inspector Hulme, Con- stabulary Station, Sandbach, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 5. Description of JOHN POILE, an ostler, charged under a warrant with stealing £ 20, the monies of his master, Louis James Brissenden, at Cranbrook, on the 28th ultimo : he is 30 years of age, 5 feet 7J inches high, sallow complexion,, grey eyes, full face, dark brown hair, and few light whiskers; supposed dressed in black cloth coat, dark vest, light trousers, high hat, and light lace- up boots, no nails. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, Kent Constabulary, Cranbrook— Bow- street, October 5. Absconded on the 13th ult., from his bail at Blandford, a man, committed for trial at the Dorset Sessions, on the 20th instant, for larceny : GEORGE HEDLEY, 56 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, and has a cancer on the lower lip; dressed in white cord or fustian trousers, and heavy hobnailed boots. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Underwood, Blandford, Dorset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 5. Charged with stealing on the 17th ultimo, by means of the ' confidence' trick : fifty £ 10 Bank of England Notes, NOB. 37701 to 37750, dated 9th June, 1874 ; and twenty £ 5 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 87473 to 87492, dated 12th August, 1874 : two men, one 32 years of age, 5 ft. 8 ins. high, fresh complexion, fair hair, and slight moustache ; dressed in light plaid coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, and high hat. The other 50 yeare of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh com- plexion, and dark hair and whiskers ; dressed in black frock coat, vest, and trousers, and high hat. Willock has been four times con- victed at quarter sessions at Birmingham in the names of JOHN REYNOLDS ( supposed right name) and WILLIAM SMITH ; was twice sentenced to penal servitude, and was discharged from Milibank Prison on the 9th March last on licence, which is unexpired.
