C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for nsertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letter- addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the names an J Descriptions of Deserteri and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pali Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING- Absconded, charged with assaulting a Constable at Jedburgh, to the danger of life, on the evening of the 6th instant : HUGH M'LEVY, a labourer, a native of Jedburgh, of Irish extraction, 27 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark hair, cut short, beard and whiskers shaved off, full round face, thick neck, dark eyes, ruddy complexion, stout make ; generally dressed on Sundays in suit of dark tweed, shooting coat, vest, and trousers, and grey tweed cap, with peak covered with same material, and on week days in ordi- nary labourer's clothes, white moleskin trousers, aud strong lace- up boots, new ; he is a poacher, and spends his money freely in drink ; he has been traced to Durham, and is sup- posed to be in Yorkshire. Information to be given to Chief Constable Boultbee, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 30. Henry Cross, labourer, 26 years of age, of No. 37, Byron- street, Barrow- in- Furness, was found near the Derby Arms Hotel, Dalton- street, Barrow- in- Furness, at 11T5 p. m., • on the 5th instant, with three large wounds on the head, from the effects of which he died on the 9th instant, and at the inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Three men and two women are supposed to have been concerned in the murder. A reward of ,£ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or mur- derers ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer. Between 2 30 and 6" 30 p. m. on the 23rd instant, the dwelling- house of Thomas Heathcote was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a large silver pair- case Watcn, No. 1831, ' T. Podmore, Tunstall,' engraved on dial; a silver open- face Geneva Watch, No. 16230 ; a small gold Scarf Pin, with hand holding cricket ball, for head ; and about £ 3 in Gold. By two men, one about 25 years of age, the other 28 years of age, both 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high ; dressed in blue pilot cloth clothes, and light wrappers round neck ; one has a cheesecutter cap, the other a billycock ; one has a dark moustache. Between 6 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 21st instant, the house of Charles Clover, at Northfleet, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a monkey Jacket, a black cloth Vest, a black Shawl, and a Nightgown. Stolen on the night of the 24th instant, from a field at Waters Hall Farm, parish of Navestock, the property of Mr. Edwin Mollett, farmer: a cream- coloured' mare Pony, 134 hands high, dark mane and tail, chipped knees, and saddle marked ; is very aged, and has a scar on lower part of body, which never heals. Description of CHARLES HILL, charged on warrant with embezzling £ 1 16s. Cd-, the- monies of James and Frank Hudson, provision dealers East- street, Brighton : about 23 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark brown hair, pale and sickly looking, no liair on face, anid very slightly made ; dressed in black morning coat and round felt hat. He has been a gentleman's servant, but lately an assistant in the provision trade, and has friends livieg at Henfield, Sussex. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton,. Description of a man who gave the name of HORNSBY, a journeyman shoemaker, charged on a warrant with larceny at Slough : about $ 5 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, stout build, very full chest, walks very erect; dresses very respectably ; his wife travels with him, aud closes boot uppers ; he belongs to the Northamptonshire Militia, and is supposed to be working in Somers Town or iu Camden Town, London. Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.— Bow- BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING, The man described in the Police Gazette of the 25th ult., charged with breaking and entering the dwelling- house of Thomas Bennett, at Cuxton, Kent, has been committed for trial on four charges of housebreaking.— Bow- street, Oct. 2. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 8 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 17th instant, in the parish of Catsfield, Sussex: a dark blue pilot monkey Jacket, velvet collar, with pockets at sides, and one inside left breast; aud a pair of light diab cloth trousers, repaired in the seat, fly fronts. Supposed by a tramp, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, few light sandy whiskers, medium figure; dressed iu dirty white slop, old dirty dark trousers, large light neck wrapper, black billycock hat, and heavy boots. SPARROW, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, proportionate make, light com- plexion, light brown hair, no whiskers, a little moustache, of gentlemanly appearance, and fond of gay life, a native of Leeds, aud was last heard of in Birmingham. Stolen during the night of the 24th instant, from I field House, Knockholt : eight fat Geese, all grey and white colour. By JACOB BAKER, a shoemaker, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, whiskers and moustache ; dressed in leng round frock, slate colour, gathered up in front, dark cap turned up all round, and tied over top with a string, and sometimes wears a billycock hat. Description of an Irish labourer charged on a warrant with stealing, on the 2nd instant, at the parish of Wellington, Salop: a Spade, nearly new, makers Alexander Norris, Stourbridge ; and a Mattock, the property of George McKnight, Mossy- green : MICHAEL MOORE, 41 years of a<* e, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, a little sun freckled, brown hair, grey ej es, and oval face; dressed in a grey cloth coat, white slop, and plaid trousers, patched on th knees with black or grey cloth ; he has been twice convicted of felony ac Newport, Salop, where he formerly resided. Stolen from a bed- room in the stables of the Marquis of Rjpon, at Studley Royal, near Ripon, between 6 and 11 p. m. on the 21st instant: two small canvas Bags, containing three £ 5 Bank of England Notes, aud £ 18 10s. in Gold ; the bags can be identified : by GEORGE GOULD, a groom, 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair, - whiskers cut off at chin, his last residence was at Quorndon, Leicestershire; dressed in a black serge coat and vest, light plaid trousers, and hard black billycock hat ; a warrant is issued for his apprehension. Description of a female servart who absconded from the service of the Rev. — Brass, of Station- road, Redhill, on the 28th ult, charged with stealing Wearing Apparel : 24 years of age, of middle stature, light brown hair, sallow complexion, high cheekbones, rather blotched face, grey eyes, with a downcast look, and rather aquiline nose ; she was last seen near London Bridge, dressed in black, with a black bonuet, trimmed with blue flowers ; she is supposed to be residing near the Queen's- road, Peckham. Description ot GEORGE SMITH, alias PEG, charged with stealing Hay, in company of another man, who is com- mitted for trial at the next quarter sessions, at Maidstone, and for whose apprehension a warrant is issued : he is from 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, whiskers shaved off, and stoops a little ; dressed in old brown coat, cord trousers, dark vest, and black billycock hat; his wife and family live in John- street, Deptford, and it is supposed that he is about Whitecfeapel with hay dealers. JAMES RAMSAY, and JOHN WILSON, alias JAMES FINLAYSON, alias BERNARD M'DIARMID, who have been in custody in Greenock, for several months past, and who have been indicted to stand their trial at the Circuit Court of Justiciary, to be held at Glasgow, in the • course of ten days, on charges of theft, after previous con- victions, made their escape from the prison of Greenock, about 5 a. m. on the 26th iustant, and a Sheriff's warrant has been granted for their apprehension, on the further charge of prisonbreaking.
