W.," as they cannot be published without bis authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. The dead body of a newly- born male child, quite naked, was found floating in the canal at Todmorden, on the morning of the 3rd instant, and at the coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or ( persons unknown. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Brindle, County Police Office, rochdale, Lancashire.— Bow- street, June 8. On the morning of the 5th instant, the body of a newly born male child was found in the Glamorganshire Canal, murdered : the body had not been washed or dressed, it was wrapped up in a copy of the ' Daily Telegraph,' dated April 30th, 1874, and sewn up in a portion of a bed sheet, and a strong cord tied round the waist; the body from its appearance had been in the water four or five days. Anyone giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the murderer or murderers, shall receive £ b reward. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Bond, Cardiff, Glamorgan.— Bow- street, June 8. German Tea Spoon; and an old- fashioned silver verge Watch. Supposed by two men, one about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, and sandy beard ; dressed in grey coat and vest and hard felt hat. The other about 5 feet 9 inches high ; and dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, Police Office, Shrewsbury.— Bow- street, June 12. Early on the morning of the 7th instant the Post Office at Fakenham, Norfolk, was broken and entered, and about £ 2 in Cash and Postage Receipt Stamps to the value of £ i 10s. stolen therein, the property of the Post- Master General. The Postage Stamps vary from Id. to 6d. in value. Information to be given to Superintendent Murrell, Walsingham, or to Sergeant Newland, at Fakenham, Norfolk.— B< no- street, June 10. On the night of the 31st ultimo, the dwelling- house of John Able, at Garvestone, was broken aud entered, and stolen therein : a black cloth Frock Coat, nearly new, lined with black alpaca, sleeves lined with calico, outside flap pockets, one pocket inside, machine stitched. Supposed by a tramping gardener, about 50 years of age, about 5 ft. 8 ins. high, swarthy complexion, small dark whiskers turning grey, thin face, and slightly made ; dressed in old brown velveteen frock coat, two pockets on each side, one large inside pocket, old greasy cord trousers, black chummy hat, and is lame ; he said he came from Suffolk. Information to be given to Su- perintendent Symonds, East Dereham, Norfolk.— Bow- street, June 5. On the 2nd instant, a cottage at Baynhall, in the parish of Severn Stoke, in the occupation of Frederick Smith, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therein: an old- fashioned silver Watch, with bull's eye glass, and a steel Chain, with a Key and two Seals attached, one a steel aud the other a brass, one having a white stone set in it, upon which is cut a man and dog, the man having a gun in his hand, pointed as if to shoot ; a piece of hock of Bacon, about 4 lbs. ; and about H lbs. of Currant Cake. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Superintendent Checketts, Police Office, Upton- on- Severn.— Bow- st., June 5. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Bedford, on the 10th instant : a plain gold Watch, white enamel face, the hour hand like a man's hand, maker J. Wall, Coventry, No. 1800. £ o reward will be paid for the recovery of the watch and conviction of the offender. Also, a silver Watch, engine- turned, white enamel face, seconds hand, marked inside of back ' Edmund Goodenough Bayly,' maker Upjohn, King William- street. i,' l reward will be paid for the recovery of the watch and conviction of the offender. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Bedford.— Bow- street, June 12. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. The dwelling- house of the Rev. Thomas Colby, Regent- terrace, Polsloe- road, Heavitree, was broken and entered on the night of the 8th instant, aud stolen therein : 1 pair of old- fashioned silver Sugar Tongs. 1 electro- plated Teapot, with flowers up the side. 4 large size white handled Knives, marked ' F. T. C.' .3 small size white- handled Knives, marked ' F. T. C.' 1 damask Hand Towel, marked ' E. Colby.' 10 black- handled Knives. 5 black- handled Forks, and several pounds of Tea. Information to be given to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter.— Bow- street, June 12. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Wadhurst, Sussex, between 8 a. m. and 12 noon on the 9th instant: a black cloth Coat; a pair of black and slate- coloured striped trousers and vesta black cobourg Shawl; a pair of women's elastic kid Boot's ( all nearly new) ; an old dark Shawl; three Pawn- tickets— one for a Wedding Ring for . r> s. ; one for a water- proof Cloak for 5s. ; and one for tw*> Dresses for 7s., pawned at Tunbridge Wells ; also a pair of woollen cord Trousers and vest; a red aud plaid Scarf ( nearly new); a silk Pocket- handkerchief ; an old red aud black plaid Shirt ; a red Shirt with black rings and red iuside. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superintendent Peerless, Police Station, Uckfield; or to Sergeant Avery, Court House, Mark Cross ; or at any Police Station in East Sussex. — Bow- streei, June 12. Between 10 a. m. and 9 p. m. on the 8th instant, the dwelling- house of Samuel Evans, Belle vue, Shrewsbury, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : nine silver Tea Spoons, marked ' T, B;'; one Ditto with a griffin's head j ono HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Left at the Angel Inn, Worcester ( supposed stolen), on the 3rd instant, a Horse and Phaeton ; by a man and woman of the following description, who stated they were merely going to Malvern and would return in the evening, and have not been heard of since : the man was about 55 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, and hair and whiskers turning grey; dressed in a black cloth coat ;. nd vest, brown trousers, and soft billycock hat ; the woman was about 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fresh complexion, and very black hair; dressed in black. Information to be given to the Worcester City Police.— Bow- street, Juno 12. Found at Hogston, Salop, on the 3rd instant, and now in possession of Mr. Powell, of Hogston Hall, farmer : a brown mare Pony, aged, about 13 hands high, aud blind of right eye. Supposed to have been stolen. Information to be given to Police Constable ( No. 31) Merricks, Minsterley, Salop.— Bow- street, June 10. Stolen from a field at Hill Top, West Bromwich, on the night of the 26th ultimo : a dark brown Mare, aged, about 13^ hands high, heavy in foal, marked with white on two hind feet, a slight blemish on one knee, marks of recent sore shoulders, slightly lame of one fore leg, aud without shoes. It is supposed that the mare has foaled before this date. £ 3 3s. reward will be paid to any person giving such infor- mation as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Holland, Police Office, Wednesbury, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, June 10. Stolen from Southampton on the 3rd instant : a Mare and four- wheeled Dogcart; the mare is 8 years old, 15 hands high, dark chestnut, nearly brown, thick mane and tail, white streak down forehead ; dogcart painted chocolate, picked out with red, cane panels at sides, shuts up behind ; the dogcart harness is silver- plated, and in middling condition ; also a Bridle and riding Saddle, in good condition. Bv a man named WILLIAM BROWN, alias CLARK, 45 yeare of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, long brown beard and moustache, stout build ; dressed in dark coat, black trousers, and high hat ; accompanied by his daughter, about 18 years of age, dressed in black, and two sons, aged 19 and 15 respectively. Information to be given to Head Constable Breary, South- ampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- sir cet, June 10. Description of seven Horses traced to the possession of CHARGES TAYLOR and GEORGE ANDREWS, .. who are committed for trial at the next Bucks Quart^ r?^ es| jons at Aylesbury, on the 29th instant, and which are supposed to have been stolen : A grey mare Cob, 12- J hands high, aged, chipped on left knee, and spavined on left hock ; also a set of silver- plated Harness, crest— a crown. A black mare Pony, aged, 13 hands 2 inches high, and marked with the saddle. A bay Mare, 13 hands high, aged, has two hind feet and near fore foot white, hog mane, and a white stripe down face. A bay Gelding, 6 years old, 13i hands high, scratched on right ribs, and white near coronet. A dark chestnut Mare, aged, 15i hands high, two white fetlocks on front and hind near feet, and white star on fore- head. A chestnut Horse, aged, 15£ hands high, lame on left fore- leg, has had a blow on Bide of near hind leg, and has a white star on forehead. A bay Mare, aged, 14i hands high-, two hind fetlocks white, a white star on forehead, white nose, saddle marked on back, and has been branded on both, thighs, that on the near side being ' 4' in a circle, and on the off side ' IY ' in a circle. For description of Andrews and Taylor, see Pblice Gazette of the 3rd instant. It is supposed that the above horses were obtained on hire- by Andrews, and then stolen. Information to be given to Superintendent Gallaway, Police Station, Aston, near Birmingham.— Borw-' trett, Jvme 8. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of GEORGE TURNER, chargcd ( on a warrant) with embezzling money belonging to George Gallop, a shoeing smith of Brighton: about 28 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, Eomc& n nose, little hair on face, small beard, thin face, black hair, coach and shoeing smith. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, June 12. Description of WILLIAM ROBINSON, charged with embezzlement, at Ashton- under- Lyne : 27 or 28 years of age. about 5 feet 10 OJ 11 inches high, sallow complexion, round full face, no whiskers, small moustache and imperial, light brown hair, cut Bhort, is a little in- kneed, has an enlarged great toe, and a piece has been cut out of one boot for ease ; dressed in light coat, light brown trousers, cloth cap with peak, and lace- up boots. Is a gardener, a I'd may seek employ- ment at some nursery or a gentleman's mansion, or may endeavour to emigrate to America. Information to be given to Chief Constable Dalgliesh, Town Hall, Ashton- under- Lyne, Lancashire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, and will pay all reasonable expense.— Bow- street, June 12. Absconded from Ilminster, Somerset, on the 9th instant, charged with embezzling £ 20, the monies of Mr. Elias Wall- bridge, of Ilminster: ALFRED SPRAKE, a journeyman baker, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, middle stature, light brown hair, rather sandy whiskers and moustache, ruddy complexion, has a small scar oil centre of forehead from a wart which has been removed, also an enlargement on the back of one hand near the wrist, his ears have been frostbitten, and are of a dark blue colour ; dressed in a pepper- and- salt cof. t, light vest, light Bedford cord trousers, and low- crowned light calico hat, liued with green ; he speaks with a west country accent, and is a native of Beaminster, Somersetshire. He may endeavour to go abroad. Information to be given to Superintendent Everitt, Somerset Constabulary, Ilminster, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, June 12. Stolen on the 21st ultimo : a blue Guernsey Frock and a silver Watch Guard, the property of Robert Bishop, at Clee. By JAMES STOKES, a fisherman, about 30 or 35 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, dark complexion, black hair and beard, tattooed on inside of left forearm— a heart with the letters ' J. S.' inside ; dressed in blue pilot coat, faced with silk, black silk velvet vest, and blue pilot trousers. He is supposed to be known at Yarmouth and on the Essex coast. Information to be given to Superintendent Gregg, County Police Station, Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 12. Absconded on the 4th instant, charged on a warrant with larceny: ISAAC WOODMAN, of Ogbourn Saint George, near Marlborough : he is about 30 years of age, 6 feet high, thin make, narrow shoulders, and inkneed, long thin beard and moustache, light complexion, long features; supposed dressed in a light suit, dark brown or light round- topped hat ; he is likely to emigrate. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretton, Marlborough, Wilts.— Bow- street, June 12. Description of JABEZ CORTON, labourer, charged with stealing at Appleby, on the 5th instant: 2s lbs. of Butter, the property of Martha Thompson ; about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion and hair, long beard, stoops a little when walking, tiat- footed aud of awkward gait; dressed in dirty cord trousers, white slop, black billycock hat, and red scarf ; he has worked at brew- eries, & c. Information to be given to Superintendent Sharpe, Police Office, Woodville, Derbyshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 12. Description of a man who absconded from Beccles on the 4th instant, stealing aud carrying away two silver hunting Watches : about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light blue eyes, light brown hair, aud small light moustache and beard ; he is supposed to be a native of Canterbury, and previous to his coming to Beccles, about a month ago, he was employed as a watchmaker at Gravesend; when he left Beccles he was dressed in black coat and waistcoat, light striped trousers, spring- side boots, and black felt hat. One of the watches is a lever, with silver dial and steel hands, makers Beha and Lickett, Norwich, No. 99279 ; and the other a vertical, with white enamel dial, the joint of the case having been recently repaired. Information to be given to the Police at Beccles, Suffolk.— Bow- street, June 10. Stolen on the morning of the 28th ultimo, from the shop of Messrs. Smith, Bumstead, and Company, drapers, North- ampton : two pieces of black cashmere imperial Silk, 70£ yards in one piece, and 37| ia the other, yellow and 8 P O L I C E GAZETTE. June 182. a grey suit, and low felt Lat ; the other about 40 years of age, & feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout, and dressed' in dark clothes. Information to be given to Superintendent Saxton, County Police, Macclesfield, Cheshire.— Bow- street, June 5. white edge. By a man who obtained a situntion in the house as shopman, stayed two days, at* l left early ou the morning of the above date, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slight build, light complexion, light brown whiskers and moustache ; dressed iu a black frock coat, ami tall silk hat. He obtained the situation by means of a false character, purporting to be written by G. Clark, 42, High- street, Southampton. He gave his address 15, Sussex- street, Tottenham Court- road, London. Information to be given to Chief Constable Keenan, Kettering, Northampton.— Bow- street, June 10. Absconded from Sheffield, charged with embezzlement : JOHN PICKERING, a book- keeper and native of Sheffield, 29 years of age, 5 feet 6J inchcs high, fresh complexion, blown eyes and hair, and has marks of ulcers on his neck ; dressed in a light suit. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Central Police Office, Sheffield, Ycrks.— Bow- street, June 10. Stolen on the morning of the 5th instant, from a railway hut at Stain Gills, near Culgaith, Penrith, Cumberland : a double- breasted kerseymere Jacket, lined with red and white flannel, two outside pockets with flaps, two inside pockets, four large white bone buttons down t ach side, and marked on the back with grease. By a navvy, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout figure, dark hair, light whiskers ; dressed iu cord waistcoat and trousers, imitation sealskiu cap, and strong navvy boots, watertight, and heavily nailed. He is known by the nickname of CAMBRIDGE. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, June 8. Absconded on the 2nd instant, stealing £ 200, the monies of the Loudon and Westminster Banking Company : a clerk, 49 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, sallow com- plexion, black straight hair, turning grey, small black whiskers, square features and build ; dressed in pepper- and- salt suit, light overcoat, and high black hat. Description of three men charged with stealing 3 stones of Lead from Gipping Hall, Suffolk, about the 26th ultimo : BENJAMIN THURLOW, a labourer, 35 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, stout build, dark complexion and whiskers ; dressed in a blue guernsey, dark trousers, and black chummy j labourer, and a native of Liverpool. Information to be hat; has been io the army; EDWARD WILDING, a given to Superintendent Metcalfe, Constabulary Office, labourer, £ S years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, j Malton, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, June 12, square shoulders, light hair, no whiskers, and fresh com- plexion ; dressed in a white slop, dark trousers, and black cap ; has also been in the army; and CHARLES RAIN- BIRD, a labourer, 24 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache rather sandy, and. , . , , , , _ turns his feet out wheu walking ; he sometimes works iu a I cut mark 011 r, » ht cheek- States tliat he 13 a uatlve of MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Missing from his home at Cleethorpe, near Gt. Grimsby, since May, 1873 : THOMAS WHITE, labourer, about 49 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, rather stout, light brown hair turning grey, and old scar from cut on forehead ; when he left home he was dressed in dark clothes, and sometimes wore a short white smock. It is feared some ill has befallen him. £ 5 reward and all reasonable expeaces will be paid for information that may lead to his recovery, dead or alive. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Campbell, Town Hall, Grimsby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, June 12. Description of JOHN SMITH, convicted at Chester- field of larceny, and sentenced to one month's imprisonment: 34 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, light brown hair, brown eyes, and fresh complexion, a labourer, and a native of Ches- terfield. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, Jwne 12. Remanded at Thirsk until the 15th instant, charged with larceny, a man, who gave the name of WILLIAM SMITH, a cabinet maker, 32 years of age, 5 feet 5i inches high, light brown hair, hazel eyes, sallow complexion, light moustache, and has lost nearly all his upper teeth ; dressed in a blue coat, two pockets outside, one inside left breast, brown vest, cord trousers, lace- up boots, and old brown cap; states that he has a relative liviug in Union- street, Manchester; and that he belongs to the 6th West York Militia. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Walmsly, North- allerton, or to Inspector Nicholson, Thirsk, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, June 12. Committed to Northallerton Gaol for 21 days, hard labour, under the Vagrant Act, on the 8th instant: HENRY WILSON, 45 years of age, 5 feet 9£ inches high, sallow complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair, whiskers, and beard ; dressed in a black cloth topcoat, blue serge jacket, grey vest, cord trousers, blue striped cotton shirt, black and white necktie, blucher boots, and soft felt hat. Says he is a blacksmith's shop. Infor- nation to be given to the Police at Stowmarket, Suffolk — Bow- street, June 8. Stolen on the 12th ultimo, from the Yew Tree Beer- house, New- road, Chesterton : a silver verge Watch, since recovered, the property of Daniel Finney. By au Irish tramp, about 18 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, no whiskers, and of dirty appearance ; dressad in an old ulack felt hat, moleskin jacket and trousers, and leather waistcoat. Information to be given to Sergeant Stanton, Chesterton, near Newcastle- under- Lyme, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., June 5. Charged on a warrant with embezzlement at. Aldersliot: Description of JAMES PENNINGTON, labourer, remanded until the 18th instant, charged with felony at Middlesbrough, on the 9th instant; about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair, brown eyus, cut mark on right cheek. States that he Carlisle, Cumberland, and a private in the Whitehaven [ Militia. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Borough Police Station, Middlesborough.— Bow- street, June 12. Doscription of three tramps who during the mouth of April last were committed to the Montgomeryshire Quarter Sessions to be holden at Newtown on the 2nd July, for felony : JAMES MACNAMA, alias WILLIAM RYAN, a tramp, a tailor, Irish, 27 years ot age, 5 feet 5V inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, intermixed with grey, grey eyes, shaves off all his beard, appears underwitted, has a cross JAMES CARVER, of Hall, near Farnham, Surrey : he is standing on a man's shoulders on right arm, crosses, J. H. S., about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7i or 8 inches high, slight build, i anchor linger, and some other faint marks on left arm, a ship sallow complexion, viark hair, very thin whiskers and mous- 1 jn f„ u sal[ 0n breast, in blue ink, ' D' on left side, over tache, and has an awkward gait, information to be given to 1 which is a large scar; says he belongs to Tipperary, that he Superintendent Stephenson, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot. was discharged from the 16th Regt. Foot 5 years ago in — Bow- street, June 5. Canada, and that he was imprisoned in Clonmel Gaol for 4 months for an assault, and was discharged on the 2nd January, 1873; committed for stealing clothes, & c.( from a workhouse. JAMES PLANT, of Hinstock, Shropshire, a labourer, 50 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh face, brown eyes, dark sandy whiskers tinged with grey, cupping marks on right side, and a scar on right side of forehead ; he has been twice convicted of stealing Wearing Apparel in Montgomery- shire, the last time being in July, 1861, when he was sen- tenced to 4 years penal servitude. GEORGE TAYLOR, alias JOHN ROGERS, 30 years of age, 5 feet 4J inches high, fresh face, grey eyes, light brown hair, brown moustache, shaves off all his beard, blue scar on corner and over right eye, burn mark on right cheek, bridge of nose broken, and ' D' on left side ; says he is a native of Hanover- street, Hanley, Staffordshire, by trade an earthen- ware painter, that he served 12 years in the 71at Regt. Foot, and was discharged for misconduct in December, 1872, at Fort George, and that he worked last at Swansea. Description of convict license- holders who have failed to report themselves at the Central Police Office, Liverpool, as required by the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871 : WILLIAM CORRIGAN, 56 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, weak eyes, blue mark on forehead, scar on lower lip, ditto on left thigh, leg and thumb of left shin discoloured, boil marks on right wrist. Was convicted of larceny at the Leeds October Sessions, 1868, and was sentenced to 7 years Penal Servitude. He was discharged from Dartmoor Convict Prison on the 30th April, 1874.
