C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is gives, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any aiticle in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Oflice, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without Ms authority. INFORMATIONS. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Newcastle- on- Tyne, on the 19th instant: a small- sized gold lever Watch, plain case, enamelled dial, makers Lister and Sons, Newcastle- on- Tyne, No. 4444. Information to be given to Chief Constable Nicholls, Newcastle- on- Tyne.— Bow- st., March 23. Description of a man and woman, tramps, charged with having on the 7th instant, robbed Henry Payne, of East Challow, near Wantage, Berks, of a Purse and 12s. : the man is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, rather fair com- plexion, brown hair, and small light brown whiskers ; dressed in an old brown cloth coat, grey tweed trousers, and brown felt hat, nearly new. Attends race3, selling raeing cards, & c. The woman is about 30 years of age, short in stature, and full pale face ; had on a dark dress, dark bonnet, and a red and black plaid shawl, which she occasionally carries cn her arm. She allures young men into some lonely place, and then with the assistance of the man robs them. Information to be given to Superintendent O'Neill, Wantage, Berks.— Bow- street, March 18. Stolen from the person at Lowestoft, on the 10th inst.: a gold hunter Watch, No. 25321, maker Charles Frodsham, 84, Strand, London ; also a gold albert Chain attached with Charm, with compass on one side, and blood- stone on the other. Information to be given at the Police Station, Lowestoft, Suffolk.— Bow- street, March 16. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the morning of the 17th instant, a woman named RUTH BUTCHER was found murdered in the parish of North Perrott, in the county of Somerset. £ 100 reward will be paiu by Her Majesty's Government to any person or persons who shall give such information aud evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers ; and the Home Secretary will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, i) Ot being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such information as shall lead to the like result. In the pocket of the murdered woman was found a piece of bacon weighing, as near as possible, 1 lb., aud wrapped in some plain white paper, tied with a piece of jute yarn, commonly used in web factories. Iuformation to be given to Superin- tendent Everitt, Ilminster, or to Sergeant Giles, Crewkerne, Somerset.— Bow street, March 27. On the morniDg of the 13th instant, the dead body of a fully developed newly born male child was found in a cart on the quay of the Barge Dock in Goole ; the body was wrapped in an old red flannel petticoat, and covered over with a piece of old sacking; according to the medical evidence the child had died from a fracture of the skull, caused by a blow from some blunt instrument. At an adjourned inquest held on the 17th instant, the jury returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' against some person or persons unknown. It is supposed that the child was conveyed from some vessel to the cart. Information to be given to Superintendent Green, West Biding Constabulary, Goole, Yorkshire.— Bow- sireet, March 18. On the morning of the 18th January last Joseph Grymes • was found murdered in his cottage in bentham Lane, in the parish of Purton, Wilts. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by the Government to any person who shall give such informa- tion and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Home Secretary will advice the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to Superintendent North, Swindon, or to Chief Constable Sterne, Devizes, Wilts.- Bow- street, March 16. FORGERY. Description of JOHN HINGSTON, who is charged at Newport with having, on the 26th of January last, at the parish of Carisbrooke, in the borough of Newport, feloniously altered a certain accountable receipt, that is to say, a pawn- ticket, with intent to defraud : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, aud moustache, and dirty appearance ; is a carpenter by trade, but is sometimes employed as a painter ; was last heard of at Oxford, on the 11th instant, where he applied for relief at the Anti- Mendicity Society's Office. Information to be given to Superintendent Ross, Borough Police Office, Newport, Isle of Wight, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 16. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from a gentleman at Windsor Steeplechases, on the 21st instant : a Card Case, silver- mounted corners, wbick bears the initials ' F. H. C.', containing a £ 20 Note, five £ 5 Notes, and a £ 10 Note. Information to be given to Super- intendent Hayes, Police Station, Windsor, Berks.— Sow- sir eet, A'arch 25. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, from the house of • Mr. E. Coombs, of Beaminster, on the 26tli instant: a Cash Box, containing £ 2 10s. in Silver, two counterfeit Half- crowns, two counterfeit Florins, a Deed of Nomination of Property at Beaminster, a £ 20 Bill of Acceptance, due to E. Coombs, and a £ 40 Note of Hand in favour of E. Coombs, Beaminster. Information to be given to Superintendent Mi » . cHale, Beaminster, Dorset.— Bow- street, March 27. During the night of the 13th instant, the dvrelling- house of Mr. Lanham, of High- street, Southampton, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : a silver Cream Jug, stands on three legs; a pair of Sugar Tongs ; and a Tea Spoon, marked ' L.' Information to be given to Head Constable Breary, Southampton, Hants.— Bow- street, March 27. During the night of the 20th instant, Jtlie dwelling- house of Mr. George Lailey, the Boot Inn, Stanford Dingley, was broken aud entered, and about 8s. worth of Coppers stolen from the till. Iuformation to be given to Superintendent Bennett, Berks Constabulary, Newbury.— Bow- st„ March 25, During the night of the 13th instant, the Royal Oak inn, Loughborough, was burglariously entered, and the following articles, the property of Emanuel Dyball, stolen therein : 25 boxes of Cigars- 18 marked ' Monte Cristo, Habana', and eagle on lid and end, and ' Lopez' on side ; 3 boxes marked ' Sir Tatton Sykes', and ' Flor de D ( D in diamond) la llena Habana'; 2 boxes marked ' Habana le Escarlata Fabina de Tobacoson lid, and ' Flor Fina' on end ; 2 boxes marked ' Foreign Cigar Association', one witli ' 2', the other with ' 3' on red paper on end ; and about 22s. in small Silver and Copper monies. Iuformation to be given to Inspector Peberdv, Police Station, Loughborough, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, March 26. A gentleman's house at Windsor, was broken and entered during the night of the 19th instant, and the following Articles stolen : six Soup Spoons, a Soup Ladle, eight Fish Knives, three Dessert Spoons, a Tea Pot, twelve Forks, some had a monogram ' J& C' reversed, and some ' G& C;' a Butter Dish aud two Rings, one ring has ' M. H. E.', the other ' A. W. E.', crossed ; all silver. £ 5 5s. reward on the appre- hension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Infor- mation to bo given to Superintendent Hayes, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- street, March 23. During the night of the 17th instant, the dwelling- houses of it. H. Barker, Esq., surgeon, and Mr. D. Allen, grocer, both of the High- st., Hungerford, were burglariously broken and entered, and the following property stolen, viz. : about £ 2 10s., principally in Gold, from the house of the former ; and a pair of Sugar Tongs and a pair of Salt Spoons, marked ' D. E. A.;' two Tea Spoons, marked ' G. J. H.', aud one ditto, marked ' D. A.;' all silver, from the house of the latter. Information to be given to Superintendent Bennett, County Police Station, Newbury, Berks. — Bow- street, March 23. The dwelling- house of Mr. James Gingell, Red Oak Farm, Theydon Bois, was burglariously entered during the night of the 21st instant, and the following Property stolen therein : a waterproof Overcoat, two light brown Overcoats, three dark grey Overcoats; a railway Wrapper, an alpaca Umbrella, a metal Tea Pot, a lady's Work Box, two pairs of lace- up Boots, two pairs of Wellington Boots, two pairs of blacs leather Leggings, and about thirty Cigars. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, Essex.— Bow- street, March 23. During the night of the 18th instant, the house of the Rev. Campbell Witham Banks, Boston, Lincolnshire, was broken and entered, aud three £ 5 Notes of the Boston, Spalding, and Stamford Bauk, about £ 7 in Gold and Silver, aud two" blank Cheques of the above bauk, both numbered ' 30 | 5495,' stolen therein. £ 20 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to- the recovery of the property and apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given, to Superin- tendent Waghorn, Police Office, Boston, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, March 23. Stolen by maans of housebreaking, between 7 and 8 p. m. on the 3rd instant, from No. 3 But, ' W' Lines, South Camp, Aldershot, the property of John Stanley Moorhouse, Esq.: a gold hunting Watch, No. 70233, white dial, ' Ji S. M.' in blue enamel on outside case. Information to be given to Superintendent Stephenson, Cocoty Police Station, Aider- shot, Hants.— Bow- street, March 16. During the night of the 12th instant, Litliebrook House, Charlton Kings, near Cheltenham, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therein : two large gold Rings, one white enamel round the outside ( with the name ' Griszel Cuming, born 1775,' and small glass in. front con- taining hair, stamped ' Gold' inside ritg), the other with a blue stone in centre-; a small plaia gold Ring, for hair out- side ; a silver gilt Beetle ; iwo silver Geneva Watches, with silver faces; aud a. quantity of Operculums ( sort of shells from Australia). Information to be given to Superintendent Day, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, M< jurch 16. Stolen by means of housebreaking from Preston House, near Linlithgow, oiithe night of the 19th or morning of; the 20th ultimo: 2 Tea Pots, one large and oval shaped, marked with plain cresS on one side, plain part on opposite side, chased all round in shape of a basket of Sowers ; one smaller sized, square at bottom, plain crest stamped on one side, and ' P. B. S.' on opposite side, chased flowering round about. 2 Cream Pots, one low round Swedish pattern, chased in form of curtains with tassels, one Queen's pattern, with plain crest on side. 1 Fish Slice, Qiieen's pattern, plain crest. 12 large Forks, Swedish pattern, with arms, and motto stamped on handles. 18 Table Spoons, Swedish pattern, nine stamped on back of handle with end turned up, nine stamped in front with end turned down, with arms and motto. 10 Dessert Spoons, Swedish pattern, stamped with arms and ntctSo. 11 Tea Spoons, plain, marked ' A. S.' on handle. 2 Toddy Ladles, plain, marked ' P. B. S.' on handle. 6 Egg Spoons, Queen's pattern, with plain crest on handle^ 2 Butter Knives, one plain, marked ' A.. S.,' one Queen's. pattern, with plain cresc in front of handle. 8 Salt Spoons, four plain, stamped ' S.', four Queen's, pattern, with plain crest on handle. 1 Punch Ladle, whalebone handle, Swedish pattern, with, arms and motto stamped on it. 1 Mrastard Pot, with glass fitting, and plain Spoon. 3 Fish Knives, plated, blades chased on one side and plain on the other side, handles chased on both sides. 3 plated Fish Forks, handles chased on both sides. 2 small Trays, plain, stamped ' P. B; S.' 1 larger Tray, carved round edge, split or cracketi about half an inch at one part of adge. 2 Gravy Spoons. 1 Sugar Basin Spoon, for grated sugar. 8 Cheese Forks, Queen's pattern, plain crest or. handle. 2 Sauce Ladles, Queen's pattern, plain crest on handle. 3 Dessert Knives and Forks, plated. 1 plain Soup Ladle. They are mostly all silver, the stamp on articles- of Swedish pattern with arms and motto, consists of an aval impress with ship in full sail, and bearing flag at stern, having oval shield and quarterings und « rnea. th, and over the top the words ' Hazard zet Forward' Those articles, stated to be marked with plain crest are stamped only with ship in full saiL £ 50 reward will be paid to any person giving such iuformation as shall lead to the recovery of the property and apprehension aud conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Chief Constable Colquhoun, Con- stabulary Office, Linlithgow.— Bow- street, March 16. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. The twenty- six teg Sheep found in the possession oi the prisoner JOHN CORT MEADOWS, at Northampton Market on the 21st, and advertised iu the Police Gaaette of the 23rd instant, have been identified by Mr. Mariioi, farmer, of Ryhall; they were stoleu on the above day, from a turnip field in the parish of Ryhall, near Stamford. The prisoner has been remanded till the 31st instant, on the charge of stealing them. Information to be given to Super- intendent Iliffe, Constabulary Station, Market Harborough, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, Ma- ch 27. Stolen from Ashtead Common, since the 1st instant: A brown Mare, 5 years old, 14 hands high, white streak down the forehead, a little white on one of the hind feet, tail cut square, aud heavy iu foal. Also a black mare Pony, 4 years old, 12 hands high, lame with off hind leg, and shod with a bar shoe, the property of James Scott, Chessington, Surrey. £ 2 reward will be paid by the owner to any person giving such iuformation as shall lead to their i- ecovery and appre- hension of the offender or offenders. March 27 Stolen from a 6table at Haskington, near Crewe, faring the night of the £ lst inst. : ft cl. u* k roan Mare, about 9 years old, 14 or 15 hands high, long mane, stiff mtdce, and wafts on the toe of one of her hind teet ; also, at the same time, a cart Bridle, with brass buckle.; aud ornaments, and a ' brass plate on the nose, with ' W. Wood, Saddler, Crewe,' - en it. Supposed by a very small man, about 35 years of age, dark complexion, and small whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, har d billycock hat, aud strong lace- up boats. £ 6 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will'lead to the recovery - f the Mare, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxtou, Nantwich, or to Inspector Morris, Crewe, Cheshire. — Bow- street, March 23. Stolen on the 3rd instant, from Tillington; a brown horse Pony, about 11 hands high, very good in harness or saddle, long rough coat, and tail out off above the hocks. Any }> ersou who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, to E. E. Edwards, Tillington, near Hereford, or to Superin- tendent Wilson, Hereford, shall receive £ o reward.— Bow- street, March 18. Stolen from a field at Caergwyle, in the county of Flint, on the night of the 13th January last : a large light brown Donkey, lias the end of its right ears cut oif, and the hair rubbed off its rump and thighs, shod all round. Supposed by gipsies who were camping in the neighbourhood, who left about that time. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Adams, or to Inspector Minshull, Mold, Flintshire. — Bmr- etreet, March 18. Stolen from a stable on the Barton- road, near Cambridge, on the 17th instant: a dark brown mare Pony, recently clipped, aged, 9 or 10 hands high, hog mane, black legs, and docked tail; had on a leather headstall, two rugs ( one plaid, the Other brown, bound with red braid), and a roller bound with red. Information to be given to Head Constable Turrall, Borough Polioe Office, Cambridge. — Bow- streei, MarhK 16. Stolon from Tudhoe colliery, during the night of the 7th instint : a dark brown mare Pony, about 7 years okl, hands high, rough coat, long mane and tail, has a grey stripe about 2 inches wide down the lower side of each eye towards the mouth, supposed to be marked with the letter ' J.' on the hoof of one of the fore feet. Information to be given to Superintendent Dunn, County Constabulary, Durham, Wilts.— Bow street, March 16. A warrant is issued for the apprehension of a man giving the name of GRAHAM, supposed false, cn a charge of stealing a Mare at Tunbridge Wells, on the 4th instant: he is about 60 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fair com- plexion, little whiskers, grey hair, brushed up at sides to bide partial baldness; dressed in black coat, red mixture trousers, and a high black hat; has the appearance of a retired coach- man. The mare is a bay, aged, 15 hands high, white hind fetlocks, forelegs used, carries her bead and tail well up ; also a Saddle, a Bridle with white front, aud a ring Martingale. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the recovery of the mare, and a further reward of £ 5 will be paid for the apprehension and convietion of the offender. Information to be given to the Chief Superintendent of Police, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.— Bow- street, March 16. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of HENRY POYNTON whe is charged, with another man now in custody, with stealing eight pounds weight of Cheese on the 22nd instant, at Appleby ; he is a farm labourer, about 25 or 26 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. high, full face, pale complexion, no whiskers, light brown ban, stout make, round shouldered, awkward in his gait, and rather weak intellect ; dressed, when last seen, in a brown coat, dark cord trousers, imitation sealskin cap, tit d over the top, and may be wearing leggings. He absconded on the 22rd instant. Information to be given to Superintendent Sharpe, Woodville, Burton- on- Trent, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bone- street, March 27. Stolen at the Swan Hotel, Alton, on the 24th instant, the property <> f Mr. Robert Madgwick : a gold double- cased Watch, white dial, No. 9680 ; a large link gold Albert Chain, and old Guinea attached. By a man, about 50 years of age, 5 feet H inches high, thin features, slight build, light hair, thick lushy whiskers, tinged with grey, and moustache dressed in a light brown cloth overcoat, dark trousers, with stripe at sides, low shoes, laced with black cotton laces, high black hat; carried a light browu fancy leather Bag, straps at ends, lw. k in centre ; a small Parcel, wrapped in black water- proof, strapped,; and umbrella; he lodged at the hotel one night, stated he was a commei ial traveller, appeared to have a foreign accent ; left Alton by the 9' 5 a. m. train same morning, having taken a ticket for Waterloo Station, London, Information to be given to Superintendent Cheyney, Hants Constabulary Station, Alton.— Bow- street, March 27. Absconded from the borough of Hertford on the 25th instant, WILLIAM FLETCHER, charged with stealing from his lodgings : an antique tortoiseshell pair- case Watch, inlaid with gold, figure Ot a Shepherdess with crook, dog, and sheep on baek of case, maker John Barton, Saffrou Waklen ; and a pictoral edition of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress : he is between 38 ahd 40 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high; ruddy complexion, dttf- k hair ( a little grey and parted in the centre), whiskers, and eyes, dimple on chin, and rather good- looking ; dressed in a dark overcoat with velvet collar, grey mixture trousers, aud soft felt hat. He had with ntm a dark cloth livery Overcoat, with brass buttons ( crest— a cockerel). Description of THOMAS SMITH, a tramping cabinet maier, who came to work to Mr. Thomas Owen, cabinet maker, of Shiffnal, Salop, on the 2nd instant, and absconded, fctealiug a small Plane and a steel Scraper, since recovered) : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or j inches high, dark complexion, full face, dark brown hair, small dark whiskera, and dressed in a black billycock hat, light brown jacket, with pockets on hips, black vest, over a dirty under do., grey trousers, all very dirty and much worn, and lace- up boots Learlv new. Information to be given to Chief Super- intendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Barrett, Shiffnal, Salop.— Boto- street, March 25. Absconded on the 21st instant, from Tavistock- aquare, stealing two half- hoop Rings, one with three stones, the other with nve stones ; a gold Stud, ruby wings, pearl body ; and a bJack dress uuit of Clothes ; a man* 22 y « ur< of age, 5 Laei 6 inches high, ruddy complexion, high cheek bones, dark hair and eyes, anchor on left arm, and ship on breast; diressed in a dark blue reeting jacket, blue trousers and vest, violet aud black striped shirt, black felt hat, and side- spring boots. May endeavour to go to sea.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, March 25. Stolen on the 23rd instant, from the ship Corunna, lying in Whitby harbour : a blue double- breasted fine cloth Jacket, velvet eoliar, bound with braid, three pocket3 outside and one inside left breast, covered buttons ( nearly new) ; a pair of light mixture cloth trousers; a light mixture cloth vest ; a sealskin Cap ; and a pair of old side- spring Boots, recently soled and had new elastics put in, By an apprentice, who is supposed to belong to Southwark, London, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, pale complexion, light brown hair, small light beard on chin, and small light moustache, slender figure ; stated that he had relations residing at Wis- beacb, Cambridgeshire, Sunderland, and County Durham. Information to be given to Superintendent ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby, York.— Bow- street, March 25. Description of WILLIAM SKELTON CADE, com- mercial traveller, charged on a warraut with embezzlement: about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, light com- plexion, whiskers round face and moustache, sometimes wears eye- glasses, and has been in the Wine and Spirit trade. Last seen at Dewsbury. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Central Police Office, Town Hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, March 23. Absconded from Chester, charged with stealing a Tarpaulin, recovered : a ticket- of- leave man, known as BOB WOODS, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 4£ inches high, hair getting thin on top of head, staring black eyes, and is by trade a bricklayer, and may be found working at cottage or any common brick buildings; he married a woman named Shannon, at Widnes last year, she will probably be with him. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, March 23.
