POLICE GAZETTE. tg Slutton'tg, CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from. Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not hnown, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. Notice.— It is requcstod that all communications for tlie purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to ME. C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should bo appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, togother with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any aiticle in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to tho Editor Iliuet be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that tho names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from tho Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intouded for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " Tho Under Secretary of State for War, War OlEce, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 21st instant, the dead body of a newly- born male Infant was found in a poud at Stroud Green, Greenham, near Newbury. The body was wrapped in brown paper aud a thick links, stamped ' 10 carat ;' a heavy dark grey Irish frieze Overcoat, with three pockets outside aud one inside left breast, dark bone buttons, black aud slate lining, and black velvet collar ; 25 yards of woollen Shirting, scarlet aud black, Rob Roy pattern, with rather large square check ; 26 yards of grey woollen Shirting, check and atrijked ; about two dozen woollen Shawls, various colours; thiee pairs of new elastic- side Boots, 6, 7, and 8 sizes, with buttonH up the front; 5 lbs. of twist Tobacco, thick aud thin, and the finest brown ; aud abcut 2a. 6d. in copper Money. Information to be given to Superintendent Sykes, West Riding Constabulary, Barnsley.— Bow- street, December 26. Wanted, charged with committing the burglary at St. John's, Sevenoaks, on the 18th and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 24th ultimo : HENRY REECE, alias HAWKES, 30 years of age, 5 feet inches high, sandy hair, no whiskers, sandy stubby moustache, blue eyes, fair complexion, and a bricklayer by trade. Was discharged from Cold Bath Fields Prison, on the 4th November last, after a sentence of six months ; was liberated from Dartmoor Gaol, on a ticket of- leave, on the 11th December, 1872, where he was uudtrgoing seven years penal servitude ; his license will expire on the 2nd June, j 1874; dressed wheu last seen in dark overcoat, cloth trousers, and felt hat, all rather old. JAMES HURLEY, about 28 years of age, about 5 feet j 7 inches high, slight made, no whiskers, and small dark ; moustache; dressed in dark overcoat, dark trousers, hard felt hat, and Wellington boots, all nearly new. Well known at Bethnal- green and Whitechapel, London. JOHN CHATFIELD, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 ins. high, one tooth out ill front of upper jaw, no whiskers, rather full face; dressed in dark coid trousers, raised seams up sides, dark cloth long overcoat, soft felt hat, white wrappfr; round ueck, with dogs' heads on it. During the night of the 25th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. John Leech, of Loddon, farming bailiff, was broken into and entered, aud the following articles stolen therein : a brown leather clasp Purse, containing £\ 5s. in Silver ; a pair- casa silver Watch, No. 11461, maker Charles Clayton, K steel CTiaiu, two common Keys, aud an old Seal with stone out, attached; aud a silver Geneva Watch, No. 36,025, a black silk Guard and common Key attached. Whoever will give such information to Superintendent Riches, Loddon, Norfolk, as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 2 reward.— Buw- strett, December 31. Between 6 and 7 p. m. on the 21st inat, the house of Edward Davies, of the Adwyr, near Wrexham, tailor and clothier, was broken into by means of breaking the lock off the back door, aud a Cash Box containing ,£ 1( J0 10s. iu gold, sue £ o Note of the N. and S. Wales Bank, and £ 3 iu Silver, was stolen from the bed- room. A man who bad been work- ing for Mr. Davies, aud who was^ discharged on the 18th iust., is suspected. He is 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stoutly built, round face, light complexion, aud a light mous- tache ; usually wears green plaid trousers, black coat and hat, and is of very respectable appearance. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bradshaw, Wrexham, Denbigh- shire.— Bvw- street, December 26. During the night of the 21st instant, a lock- up shop at Broomhill, near Barnsley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, was forcibly entered, and the following articles stolen therein : a silver lever Watch, with white dial, seconds hand, engine- turned case, aud capped, makers Storey and Sidman, Dews- bury, No. 25923, had attached a gold albert Guard, with long pair of grey woollen Stockings; a pair of light Half- Boot the tongue of one missing ; a black aud white woollen Muffler ; 1 a plaid Muffler ; aud a black felt Hat. Supposed by a man of the following description : 21 years of age, about 5 feet 7 ins.; high, fresh complexion, brown or dark brown hair, wide1 mouth, rather soft voice iu speaking ; he is a Welshman, and speaks broken English; has the appearance of a farm servant, aud likely to seek employment with farmers ; he is supposed to be a native of Llanfaircaereiniou, Montgomery- shire. Information to be given to Superintendent Hughes, Towyn, or to Police Sergeant Roberts, Aberdovey, Meriuueth- shire.— Bow- street, December 24. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from Union Cross Farm, West Bromwich : 2 Ponies, one cream colour, about 11 hands high, aged, in good condition, brand mark ' 3' on each side of ribs, aud lost two front teeth ; the other is a black horse Pony, 13 hands high, aged, good condition, and white spot saddle mark on back. Information to be given to Sergeant, Smith, Police Station, Greets Green, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 2. Further information respecting the bay Mare stolen from Park Farm, Oldland Common, advertise*! in the Police Gazette of the 15th ultimo : the Mare had a flowing mane and long tail, aud both sides were rubbed by plough chains. Two men of the following description were seen with a mare the same night, going iu the direction of Chippenham, Wilts : One about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, and dark whiskers ; dressed iu dark overcoat, cord trousers, soft bowler hat, and white muffler. The other about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high ; dressed iu cord trousers, dirty slop, and soft bowler hat. They had the appearance of low horse dealers. £ 10 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders, ou application to Sir. E. Williams, Oldland Common ; to Superintendent Rawle, Fishponds ; or to Sergeant Morley, Oldiand Common, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, January 2. Stolen from a field at Burnhill- green, Patshull, on the 16th ultimo : a bay cob Horse, 8 years old, about 14 hands high, right knee broken, star on forehead, ittle white on near heel, and lump on loin. Information to be given to Inspector McCrea, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, or to Police Constable Cragg, Police Station, Pattingham.— Boie- street, January 2. Stolen from the premises of the ' Wire Trellis' inn, at Barnsley, Yorkshire, on the night of the 28th ultimo : a dark brown Mare, aged, about 17 hands high, straight fetlock, and shakes its hind legs when walking. Also, from a field at Platt's Common, on the same night : a black Horse, aged, 14J hands high, cut mark on near eye, long maue and tail, and in good condition. And, a black Horse, aged, 15 bands high, white face, hair rubbed off tail, and in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Sykes, West Riding Constabulary, Barnsley.— Bow- street, January 2. Stolen from Rhug Park, between the 12th and the 20th instant: forty Welsh Ewes, the property of Thomas Evans, point of left ear cut, and point of right ear split, pitch mark ' T. E.' ou left side, and supposed the letter ' W.' on right, tails half cut, aud raddled ou shoulders ; also five Ewes, of larger size, supposed to be South Downs, three of them pitch marked ' T. W.', one of them was black. Infor- mation to be given to Sergeant Williams, Corwen, Merioneth. — Bow- street, December 29. Further information respecting the black Mare stolen from Boxhill Farm, Dorking, on the night of the 9th instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 12th instant: she has a seton mark on near hip, and a lump on inside of off fore leg. The bay Pony stolen at the same time and place has not yet been found. Information to be given to Super- intendent Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, December 38. Stolen on tire night of the 19th instant, from Stockheatli, Havant: a bay mare Pony, 6 years old, 14 hands high, dark stripe down face, large bony knees, and turns forefeet in- wards, long tail cut square, and iu good condition ; a set of Gig Harness with Chain Tugs; also a light spring Cart, made of oak, painted green, the paint nearly worn off, both shafts having been broken and mended with plates of iron. A man between 30 and 40 years of age, dressed in dark clothes aud high hat, was seen driving it. Information to be given to Superintendent Littlefield, Hants Constabulary, Farebam.— Bow- street, December 26. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of THOMAS PLATTS, a brewer's traveller, who absconded from Sheffield on the 23rd ultimo, charged with embezzling a large sum of money, the property of his masters, Messrs. Bradley Brothers, brewers, Soho Brewery, Sheffield : he is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pale sallow complexion, dark hair aud eyes ( with a cast in them), slight impedimeut in his speech, moves his head from side to side when speaking, has a nervous babit of fingering his ehiu when spokeu to, aud rather in- kneed ; dressed when he absconded iu a dark blue overcoat, with velvet collar, and low crowned brown felt hat; he is a native of Dronfield, iu the county of Derby, but has lately resided in Napier- street, Sbtlfield. £ o reward will be paid by Messrs. Bradley Brothers to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension of the said Thomas Platts. 1 nformation to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, January 2. Absconded from Barnstaple, on the 26th instant, charged with embezzlement : JOHNSON WEBB, 16 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark brown hair, florid complexion, Roman nose, and of genteel appearance; dressed in brown mixture coat and vest, black trousers, aud at times wears a black overcoat; has lately been a clerk in a printer's office. Supposed gone to some seaport, with tne intention of going to sea. A warrant is issued for his appreheusion. Iuforma- tion to be given to Head Constable Longhurst, Barnstaple, Devon.— Bow- street, December 31. Desc iption of AMOS WALKER, formerly of Swaff ham, a commercial traveller, who absconded on the 28th ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzling a large amount of money : he is abont 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair and whiskers, growing down the face and under chin ; he was seen a few days since in the neighbourhood of Islington, and is connected with the beer, wine, and spirit trade. All expends will be paid on his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Lambley, Swaffham, Norfolk.— Bow- street, December 31. . Description of EDWIN ROBERTS, a tramping shoe- maker or rivetter, who absconded from Oakengates, Salop, on the ISth instant, charged on a warrant with being the bailee of a silver verge Watch on the ISth instant, the property of Henry Didlock ; also of a silver Geneva Hunting Watch, maker La Trobe, 15, College Green, Bristol, No, 52696 ; and an English verge Watch, No, 5889, the property of Mr. Joseph Rushton, watchmaker, Oakengates : he is about_ 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair and complexion, little beard at end of chin ; dressed in black cloth coat and trousers, brown vest, and soft black billycock hat; is accom- panied by his wife and a little boy ; the wife is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, pale complexion, has a cast in both eyes, and auburn hair ; the little boy is about 4 years of age, fair complexion, and curly hair. Stolen during the night of the 19th instant, from the dwelling- house of George Hegley, of Spinkhill: one bloe pilot Jacket with velvet collar and pockets outside ; one'black cloth Vest; one pair of dark tweed Trousers; one pair of light lace- up Boots without noils; and two Scarfs : the pro- perty of Michael Martin. Also at the same- time : one black cloth Jacket with velvet collar ; one pair of light tweed Trousers; and one pair of elastic ride Boots; the . property of Patrick Higgins. By a man of the following deficription, charged under a warrant: JAMES WOODCOCK, stone- mason, but has lately worked as r. labourer, 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light barr, no whiskers, red face, is a native of Clowne. Derbyshire ; has been in the army about two years. He will most iikely'be wearing part of the stolen clothes, as he left part of his own behind. Description of JOSEPH BRADLEY, nailmaker, of Old Hill, Rowley Regis, Starftordshire, who is charged with stealing 1 cwt. of rod Iron, the property of the New British Iron Company, on the night of the 18th instant : about 42 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, proportionately built, very dark hair and whiskers, rough beard, sallow com- plexion ; dressed in an old brown velveteen jacket, old blue trousers, old billycock hat, and very bad shoes. Information to be given to Inspector Price, Police Station, Old Hill, Dudley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.- " Bow- street, December 26. Description of GOODWIN GOOD YOUNG, who is charged with embezzling £ 28 19s. 6d., the property of the • with velvet collar, moleskin trousers and vest, blue flannel shirt, eheck scarf, black cloth cap, and old bests. Information to he given to Superintendent Oliver, Durham County Constabulary, Consett, who holds a - warrant fcr his appre- hension.— Bow- street, December 24. Stolen from No. 14, Edgware- street, Edge- hill, Liverpool, a Harp, maker ' Erards,' black belly, with ornaments at the bottomland figures of females. By a man of the following description : - 5 feet 4 inches high, face very red with pimples, and wore a round bHok oloth and round hat. A reward of 10s. will be given for lus apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Harrap, Edgeside, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 24. FRAUDS AID AGGRAVATED MISBBMEAIOUES. Description of a nian who obtained by false pretences from Mr, George Stone, jeweller, Weston- super- mare, Somer- set, on the 24th instant : one gold 18- carat engraved keeper King, hall marked ; and one 15- carat blue enamelled gold Locket, with Masonic ( compass) emblem, of the value of .£ 3 15s. ; he stated tl) at his name was CHARLES, and that he requined them to make a present to his uflole, Mr. Perry : abcut 20) or 23 years of age, 6 feet 5 inches high, round fea- tures, very fair complexion with light whiskers, blue or grey eyes, light hair cut short, and of respectable appearance; dressed in a black bowler hat, with mourning band, and blue cloth jacket. Description of PATRICK MARTIN, in custody at Middlesborougb, charged with stabbing Police Constable Hunt, on the evening of the 30th ultimo : about 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh looking, hair cut very short, no whiskers, small moustache, of Irish parents, but was born at Sunderland, and generally works about ship yards.
