W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. ! JOHN LEWIN, alias DIDLUM TAYLOR, charged with the murder of Thos. Monk, at Wistow, on the 30th July • last, lias been apprehended at Chesterfield, by the Derbyshire Constabulary ; the other three charged with the same offence ' advertised in the Police Gazette of the 5th instant, are still at large. Information to be given to Surperintendent Burdett, Aylestone, near Leicester.— Bow- street, Nov. 12. On the morning of the 10th instant, the dead body of a full- grown male Child was found floating in the river Weaver, at Hartford, near Northwieh, Cheshire ; a staylace was tied j tightly round its neck. At a coroner's inquest held on the ! body on the 11th instant, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons at present unknown. Iuformation to be qiven to Superintendent Rowbottom, Middlewich, or to Inspector hindley, Northwich, Cheshire. I — Bow- street, November 12. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. I On the night of the lst instant, a Rick of Hay, belonging to Mr. John Skinner, of Tiverton, standing in a field at Chittlehamholt, Chittlehampton, Devon, was willfully burnt and destroyed. Any person or persona giving such informa- tion that shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders shall receive £ 10 reward. Informa-, tionto be given to Superintendent Wood, Devon Constabulary, South Mcjitcn.— Bow- street, October 10. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking from a bedroom at the Kennels of the Cheshire Hunt, at Daleford, between 9 and 11 p. m. on the 4th instant : a silver lever stop hunting Watch, engine- turned case, Nc. 1864, has the letters ' J. T.' and ' W. H.' engraved on inner case ; and £ 4 10s. in Gold. Also between 9 a. m. and 4 p. m. on the 5th instant: a pair of thin woollen cord hunting Breeches, Bmall size, middle- sized cord, and cashmere strapping on the inside of thighs ; the property of James Toretts. Information to be given to Superintendent Mayho, Tarporley, Cueshii- e.— Bow- sh eet, November 12. During the night of the 10th instant the house of William Bavidge, at Micheldever, Hants, was broken into, and the following articles stolen : a brown Overcoat, with brown buttons and brown velvet collar, resewn under one arm with black thread ; a light- coloured Vest, black back and brown buttons; also a blue bundle Handkerchief, marked ' B' in one corner. During the same night and near the same place the bouse of Jeremiah Green was broken into, and an alpacca Umbrella stolen therein. Iuformation to be given to Superintendent Elliott, Hants Constabulary, Winchester.— Bow- street, November 12. About 1 a. m. of the 5th instant, an attempt was made to break into the offices of Messrs. Harrison and Little, soli- citors, Bishop- yards, Penrith. There were left behind : a Chisel, 15J inches long, such as colliers use, called a ' jumper,' which had been altered into a lever by having three inches at the point turned down ; a small white- handled Pocket- kuife ; a Brace aud two Bits, all in a rusty condition ; four Files, two of which are small fine lock or ward jibs; and two pieces of round Iron ( about the size of children's hoops), 12 inches long, with crooked ends ; the whole ( with the exception of the iron lever and knife) were wrapped in brown paper, almost destroyed with rust, and covered with a piece of old American cloth, over which was a piece of new black American cloth lj yard wide aud 1 yard long, and a light coloured leather leather strap ( 10 inches long aud J inch wide, with bright metal buckle inch wide) wss round the parcel. During the night of the 5th instant, a cottage at Lund, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, was broken iuto, and the following articles stolen therein : 4 or 5 yards of scarlet Flannel; 4 or 5 yards of Calico ; a scarlet merino Valence ; three new Chemises; three pairs of women's Drawers ; two old calico Shirts, marked ' W. W.' on the right side of front lap ; two pairs of men's Stockings, one pair woollen, the other worsted ; three or four pairs of womeu's Stockings; 2J yards of black aud while plaid Shirting ; two new Night- gowns ; a hasp of light grey Worsted ; 4- stone of Soap ; 2 lbs. of Loaf Sugar ; £- lb. of Tea ; and 1 lb. of Currants. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Naylor, East Riding Constabulary, Beverley.— Bow- street, Nov. 10. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Absconded from Usk, on the night of the 8th instant, charged with stealing twenty- four Sovereigns from the person of a farmer, whilst drunk, ou the Usk and Newport road : GEORGE WILLIAMS, supposed to be a native of Bristol, and has been to sea. about 26 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, proportionately built, fair complexion, brown ] hair, small dark moustache, 110 whiskers ; dressed when he j absconded in a slop jacket, moleskin vest and trousers, and t black and white straw hat. Stolen from the person of Mr. Henry Bell, in the Hiring, at Hexham, on the 11th instant, a gold Watch, No. 37151,! makers Listers and Sons, Newcastle- on- Tyne. £ 2 reward I will be paid by Superintendent Stephenson, Hexham, ou' recovery of the watch aud conviction of the offender or! offenders, to whom all information is be given.,— Bow- street,! Stolen early on the morning of the 8th instant, from the person of Joseph Appleby, at East Witton, in the North Riding of Yorkshire : about 4s. in Silver; a silver verge Watch, maker Henry Bell, Lancaster, No. 1577, attached is a steel Chain, curb pattern, two brass Keys, a brass Seal, and a l-" ourpemiy Piece. Supposed by two cattle drovers, who absconded at the time of robbery : one is known by the name of LEEDS, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair, stout figure ; dressed in a short ilack coat, fustian trousers, black cap aud clogs, all very dirty and much worn ; the other about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, very dark complexion, black hair, slender figure; dressed in a long black coat, much faded, cord or fustian trousers, and black cap; they are in the habit of attending markets aud fairs. Information to be given to Superintendent Alderson, Leyburn, North Riding Consta- bulary, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, November 10. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a meadow, in the parish of Dilwyn, in the county of Hereford, on the 4th instant : a black cob Mare, aged, about 14 hands high, long mane, short dock tail, two hind heels white, ana a small lump uuder the mane on the off side, the property of Mr. Thomas Vaughn, of Dilwyn. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Shead, Weobly, or to Police Constable Allen, Hyde, Dilwyn, Herefordshire.— Bow- strect, November 14. Stolen from a field at Bed worth, 011 t'- e night of the 9th instant, the property of Mr. Geo. Clarke : two Ponies, of the following descriptiou : one a brown cob Pony, 10 years old, 14^ hands high, white star bn forehead, short tail, a little lame on the forefeet; the other a light bay mare Pony, 8 years old, 13& hands high, white star ou forehead, short bang taiL Also, at the same time and place, the property of Mr. Jesse Smith : a grey mare Pony, 9 years old, 12 hands high, the hair slightly knocked off both knees, long tail with the end cut level. Information to be given to Superintendent Austin, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, Nov. 14. Stolen ou the night of the 10th instant, from a field at Fazeley, the property of Mr. William : a dark brown Mare, half hied, rising 4 years old, 15 hands high, small white star ou forehead, very thin short mane, switch tail, a few white hairs on one hiud foot, near knee brokeu, off knee slightly scarred, very quiet, and in good condition. A man of the following description was seen near the field at 5 p. m. on the 10th instant, and shortly afterwards rode a horse in the direction of Birmingham : about 30 years of age, dressed iu a dark jacket aud billycock hat, and was carrying a rush basket, fastened on his back with strap. £ 10 reward will be paid ou the apprehension aud conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the horse. Stolen from a field at Timperly Lodge, near Altrincham, Cheshire, about the lst instant, a brown Mare, 10 hands high, has been blistered on the near fore leg for a splint, aud is a " roarer." Information to be given to Superintendent Steen, Altrincham, Cheshire.— Bow- street, November 14. Stolen from a field in the township of Burland, near Nantwich, on the 10th instant : a grey horse Pony, about 12 bands high, rising 3 years old, light face, dark legs, small feet, mottled mane and tail, white spot on left side towards the back, and two bare sp'jts about the size of a penny cm side ; aud a dark brown mare Pony, nearly black, aged, abeut 15 years old, rather ragged mane, big bellied, supposed in foal, neat legs and feet, and is slightly grazed on left knee but healed us. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, County Police, Nantwich, Cheshire. — Bow- street, November 14. Description of a showman charged with having, on the 10th instant, at Alford, stolen a Horse ( recovered , the pro- perty of Robert Bryant, of 8, Gray's- inn- road, London : he is about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 1 or i inches high, stout build, dark complexion, black hair and whiskers, turns his feet oat and has a peculiar rolling gait ; dressed in light cord trousers with rule pocket, black cloth vest with various coloured buttons, snuff- coloured cloth coat, dark quartered cap hooked down on peak, green and white -: arr, snuff coloured cloth shirt with yellow stripe, and old blucher boots very much worn ; he is a native of Wantage, Berks, and has travelled 5 or 6 years with roundabouts and a rifle saloon, from Outwell, Isle of Ely. Information to be given to Superintendent Danby, Alford, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- strect, November 14. Stolen during the night of the loth instant, from Grazeley, the property of Mrs. Elizabeth Nash, a black Filly, 2 years old, about 14 hands 2 inches high, tail cut off a little above the hocks, long mane, a piece of hair cut out for the bridle to fit in, a piece of hair rubbed off the near side close to the hip, has been shod recently and broken in, and is very quiet. Information to be given to Superintendent Crook, County Police Station, Reading, Berks.— Bow- street, November 12. Description of WILLIAM POTTER, late of Edvin- Ralph, in ' ie county of Hereford, carpenter, who is charged with stealing 13 Sheep aud Lambs on thejiight of the 27th ultimo, which have been recovered, the property of Mrs. Mary Ann Benbow, of the parish of Edvin- Ralph ; he is from 25 to 26 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, rather thin face, dark hair and whiskers ; dressed in a ]> epper- aud- salt coloured suit, and black soft low hat. Supposed to be accompanied by his wife. Information to be given to Superintendent Harwood, Bromyard, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Nov. 12. Found in the possession of a horse stealer at Salford, and supposed to have been stolen : a bright bay Mare, 14 hands high, rising 4 years, with white star on forehead, white near fore foot, white off hind leg, and bang taiL Information to be given to Chief Constable Torrens, Town Hall, Salford, Lancashire.— Bow- street, November 12. Found at Oakengates, Salop, about the 26th ultimo ( sup- posed to have been stolen), a brown mare Pony, aged, about ! 12 hands high, white stare ou face, near hiud foot white, and iu low condition. Information to be given to Chief Super- intendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Merricks, Oakengates, Salop.— Bow- street, November 10. Stolen from a field behind the Darlington District Bank, Guisbro', the property of Mr. Bell, manager, ou the night of the ( ith instant: a light mare Donkey. A reward of 10s. will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the recovery of the donkey and conviction of the offender 01- offenders. Information to be given to Super- intendent Prest, North Riding Constabulary, Guisbro', York. — Bow- street, November 10. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of a man, a navvy, charged at Barrow- in- Furness with stealing a Watch ( recovered), on the 28th ult, : about 30 years of age, o feet 8i inches high, light complexion, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, has lost the 1 sight of left eye, looks cross- eyed, aud blind eye is not- closed ; diessed in black cloth coatnearly new, white jacket underneath, moleskin trousers, dirty with" clay, lace- up booU, printed check shirt, and blue pilot felt cap " with blue check band. Information to be given to Superintendent Holden Ulverston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, November 14. Absconded from Barrow- in- Furness, on the 20th ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: JAS. HORSLEY, Secretary of tbe Operative Bricklayers' Society, 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, ruddy complexion, very red nose, • long hair turning grey, grey moustache, no whiskers, and is fond of snuff ; dressed iu .1 grey cloth coat and vest, woollen cord trousers, and grey billycock hat. He was formerly i Secretary to the Bricklayers' Society in Nottingham. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Holden, Ulverston, , Lancashire.— Bow- street, November 14. Description of GEORGE MONAGHAN, a native of Chester, charged with stealing a Coat and several brass | Mountings of Harness ( recovered), from Cherton, one t\. e 2Gth ultimo: about 16 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, high cheek bones, and light brown hair ; dressed in cord trousers and vest, aud black c ip. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Wilson, Police Station, Tattenhall, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, November 14. Stolen from a jeweller's shop iu Abingdon, on the 12th instant; a half- hoop diamond Ring, coutaiuing five stones. 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T l K. November 14. By two men of the following description, who entered the shop and asked to be shown some rings, and after they had left the above ring was missing, » nd a spurious fac simile left in its place : one about 50 years of age, 5 fee* 40 or 11 inches high, rather stout, dark complexion, very much pockmarked ; dressed in brown overcoat and high blaclc hat: the other about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 indies ' high, fair complexion, light sandy hair and whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes and high black hat. Both are of respectable appearance. A similar robbery was effected at O- rford on the same day by the same men. Information to be given to Head Constable Barratt, Abingdon, Berts.— Bow- street, No- vember 12. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Hull, on the 8th instant: 1 silver Geneva Watch, No. 5553. 1 plated Albert Guard. 1 gold mourning Ring, was a wedding ring, set with a stone resembliiig jet. By WILLIAM MAINPRIZE, a butcher, 21 years of age, 0 feet high, healthy looking, pimply face, brown hair; dressed in black French twill coat and vest, and dark striped trousers, all new. his mother resides in Bridlington ; he has a brother a draper in Newcastle, another brother in Notting- ham, and friends at Barton and York. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Hull.— Bow- street, Nov. 14. Stolen on the 18tb instant, from a dwelling- house at Hassall i £ 5 10s. in Gold, some Sixpenny and Threepenny Pieces, and a new Wesleyan Hymn Book. By two young men who were seen in the neighbourhood : one about 20 yrs. of age, 5 feet 6 inches high ; dressed in moleskin jacket, vest, and trousers ; the other, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high; dressed in dark clothes and cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Rowbottom, Constabulary Station, Middlewicb, Cheshire.— Bone- street, November 14. Charged on a Sheriff's warrant with embezzling £ 900, belonging to the North British Railway Company : ROBERT GOULD, a collector of accounts, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark hair, no hair on face, pale com- plexion ; dressed in blue mbnkey jacket, blue vest and trou- sers, aud black felt hat. He absconded on the 15th ultimo. It is supposed that he will endeavour to go abroad. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Constable McCall, Detective Department, Glasgow.— Bow- street, November 12. Absconded from Halifax, charged with forgery and ob- taining upwards of .£ 4,1) 00, belonging to the Guardians of the Poor of the Halifax Union, in June, 1872 : WILLIAM JAMES LAIDLER, clerk, about It) years of age, 5 ft. 10J or 11 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, partially bald, sandy whiskers and moustache, shaved uuder chiu, blue eyes, stout figure, broad across the shoulders, and walks erect; he is of gentlemanly appearance, and at all times neat and clean in his person and dress. Jt is supposed, before he absconded ( in June, 1872) that he fell and knocked two upper front teeth out and injured his nose. He has held situations at Ross, Herefordshire, and Guisbro', Yorkshire, as deputy clerk to the Guardians of the Poor. His native place is Almouth, Northumberland, wheie he has relatives now living. When at Halifax he was fond of gambling, billiard playing, & c. He may probably have obtained employment as clerk on a railway. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Halifax, Yorkshire, who hoKls a warrant for his apprehension, also a photograph of Laidler. — Bow- strcet, November 12. Stolen in transit, between Cardiff and Paddington Goods Department Railway Stations, ou 3ilth August last: a tra- veller's wooden Case, painted black, iron- bound edges, about 3 feet wide, 3 feet 6 inches long, and 4i inches deep, two locks inserted, and strapped with leather straps. Addressed to Mr. McQueen, 37, Great Marlborough- street, Regent- street, London, and may have old labels ou it, to Mr. Bowden, the Christopher Hotel, Bath, or other places. It contained 50 original water- colour Drawings, from ±' 18 18s. to £ 2 2s- eacli, total value £ 365 10s. 6d., by the following artists : 1 by Copling Fielding, Landscape. 2 by E. A. Absconded on the 5th instant, charged with embezzling £ 50, the monies of his employers : a man 42 yesrs of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, dark hair, whiskers, aud moustache, turning grey, scar on forehead ; supposed dressed in a blue overcoat. Metropolitan Police, B Division, Not. 12. Absconded on the 5th instant, charged with stealing £ 40, the monies of his employer : a man 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, florid complexion, no beard or whiskers, dark hair and eyes ; dressed in blue smooth pea jacket, black coat under, dark tweed trousers, deerstalker hat, turns up at brim, black and white scarf, and coral pin.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, November 12. Absconded from Witchford, near Ely, on the 13th ultimo, charged with stealing £ 34 in money from William Gateson, at Ely : SAMUEL STEVANS, a cattle dealer, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, light hair, whiskers, and moustace, fair face, has a slight bend in bis nose, stoops a little, and looks on the ground. Information to be given to Superintendent Smith, Ely, Cambs., who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, November 12. Absconded on the 6th instant, from his bail, charged with selling obscene Prints : WM. OLIVER, 27 yearsof age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, hair and moustache, slight, grey eyes ; dressed in brown overcoat, velvet collar, dark striped trousers, and high black hat. Warrant issued. — Metropolitan Police, E Division, November 12. Description of JOSEPH HORWOOD, licence holder, of Houghton Regis, who is charged with stealing, on the 24th ult., a quantity of Linsey and FJanneJ ( since recwased), the property of Mr. John Bailey, draper, Dunstable : about S5 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches higk, sharp features, thin prominent nose, freckled face, dark brown hair, bald on top of head, small dark moustache, aud whiskers shaved off; dressed in a dark pilot jacket, light coloured coat underneath, old dark cloth trousers, which are too big for him, and sup- posed to be wearing an old dark grey deerstalker hat ; he is a shoemaker. Information to he given to Head Constable George, Police Station, Dunstable, Beds., who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, November 10. Description of JOHN COLYER, journeyman baker, who absconded from his employment at Margate, having embezzled various sums of money : about 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, and walks lame ; dressed in a grey coat, vest, and trousers, and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Head Constable Compton, Margate, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, November 10. Description of HENRY BRAY, a labourer, who is charged with embezzling £ 1 8s. 6d., the monies of Thomas Norbron Batty, his master, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued : about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow complexion, dark browu hair, long at back, small thin whiskers on sides of face, scar on side of nose, ruptured and wears a truss, round shoulders, stoops when walking, is asthmatical, and a native of Lincolnshire ; dressed in an old black frock coat, cord trousers, and high black silk bat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cliipstead, Borough Police Office, Wakefield, York.— Bow- street, November 10. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Crewe, on the 7th inst.: a light grey plaid Shawl, puce and grey border, and fringe; and a pair of men's leather lace- up Boots, with single soles, nearly new. Convicted at Salford, January 8th, 1872, for simple larceny, and sentenced to 18 months hard labour, and 7 years police supervision ; released from Saltord Prison, on the 7th of J uly, 1873.
