Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to tlip Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor • ut be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from tho Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of Stato for War, War Office, Fall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, on the 7th inst. : a very old- fashioned Watch Case, painted enamelled back, with two rows of rose diamonds, had a keyless gold Watch and Case inside, with white dial. Information to be given to Head Constable Turrall, Borough Police Office, Cambridge. — Sow- street, October 10. Stolen from the person, on the 30th ultimo, on Lichfield i race course, a silver lever Watch, marked inside ' W. Callam,' ( with a gold albert Chain ( ornamental links) attached. Infor- mation to be given to Sergeant Hammond, Police Station, Shenstone, Staffordshire. Boxo- street, October 8. Stolen from the person of a lady, during a concert at Hastings, on the 4th instant : three £ b Bank of England Notes, Nos. 74422, 74423, and 74424, dated 30th July, 1873. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Town Hall, Hastings, Sussex.— Boir- street,, October 8. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. About 1 a. m. on the 6th instant, the jeweller's shop of Mr. John Spittal, King- street, Whitehaven, was broken into, and the following Watches stolen therefrom : five ladies' English Levers, maker J. Spittal, Whitehaven, Nos. 40718, 38478, 57241, 61157, 8010 ; and three keyless gold Genevas, maker Stauffer, Nos. 82133, 83954, 42810. A tall man, dressed in dark clothes, having the appearance of a sailor, was seen running from the place. Information to be given to Superintendent Little, Whitehaven, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bonn- street, Oct. 8. On the 5th instant, the house of Mr. Williams, 11, East- grove, Cardiff, was entered by means of skeleton keys, aud stolen therein : two silver table Spoous, marked ' W. ;' eight ditto tea Spoons, marked ' M. A. E.;' four ditto salt Spoons, gilt bowls ; a pair of ditto sugar Tongs, marked ' W.;' a butter Knife; a ditto cheese Scoop ; a ditto punch Ladle ; a gold Ring, with turquoise and pearl; a ditto Mourning ; a Brooch, with mosaic of St. Macles, Venice ; an electro gilt Necklet, with an American gold Dollar ; and two Bracelets. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Bond, Cardiff, Glamorgan.— Bow- street, October 8. On the night of the 2nd instant, a gun- room in the neighbourhood of Wrexham was broken into, and a double- barrelled breech- loading Gun Damascus barrels) 2 ft. 4 ins. long, bar side locks, patent vertical grip action, maker Jones, Wrexham, on the barrels and side plate of locks ; on the Stock, a small silver plate with the initials ' V. J. Y.' en- graved thereon ; and a Powder Flask and Shot Belt were stolen therefrom. A handsome reward will be given to any person who shall give such information as may lead to the apprehension and conviction of tlie offender. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bradshaw, County Police Office, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, October 6. Stolen from the dwelling- houses of James aud Alfred Brown, Bocking, by meaus of burglary, on the night of the 3rd instant: two black cloth Overcoats, nearly new ; one dark Witney Overcoat; two old- fashioned silver Table Spoons, marked ' R' or ' M'; one pair of silver Sugar Tongs, engraved and marked ' E. W. B.' ; three small old- fashioned silver Tea or Egg Spoons; and 4s. or 5s. in Postage and Receipt Stamps. Information to be given to Superintendent Ackers, Braintree, Essex.— Bow- street, October C. bay cob nag Horse, about 14 hands 3 inches high, black legs with little white on off hind fetlock, white star- on forehead, switch tail, and recently shod on both hind feet. £ 1U reward. Information to be given to Inspector Thomas, Coleshill Police Station, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, October 10. Stolen during the night of the 8th instant, from a field adjoining the Melton Mowbray turnpike road at Belgrade, a dark brown horse pony, aged, about 12 hands high, very short ears, has a piece cut off the off one, long mane and tail, very fat, and rough from lying out, the property of Mr. G. H. Wade, of Belgrave. Information to be given to Super- intendent Burdett, Aylestone, near Leicester.— Bow- street, October 10. Stolen from a field at Pentretrewyn, near Corwen, on the night of the 24th ultimo, the property of Simon Williams, cattle dealer, Corwen : six yearling Bullocks, rising 2 years old, some of them were black, the others brown and white. Information to be given at the Police Office, Corwen, Merionethshire.— Bow- street, Octobcr 10. Supposed to have been stolen during the night of the 5th instant, from a field at Gospel End, Sedgley : a dark brown Mare, aged, about 14 hands high, a small white star on the forehead, long mane aid tail, white hind legs, and in good condition, the property of Eli Fox. Information to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Police Office, Sedgley, Stafford- shire. — Bow- street, October 10. Description of JOHN HUTT, of Coventry, a grocer's assistant, charged with stealing a Gelding ( recovered) at the parish of Foleshill, on the 1st instant, the property of Arthur Sims ; about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, black hair, small moustache, dark complexion, and has a smart appearance ; dressed in a light grey suit and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Inspector Olliver, Long- ford, Coventry, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— — Bow- street, October 8. Stolen from the Marshes at Kings Hill Farm, in the parish of Elmley, Isle of Sheppy, between the 24tli ultimo and the 1st instant: three Kent Sheep, marked ' T. B.' iu pitch, the property of Thomas Bensted. Information to be given to Superintendent Mayne, Kent County Constabulary, Sittingbourne.— Bovj- street, October 8. Stolen from a paddock at the Starpitts, Much Cowarne, during the night cf the 1st instant, the property of William Jones, an entire Donkey, about 3 years old, dark colour, light nose, thick neck, large knee- joints, had not been shod in front, but had shoes on hind feet. It was purchased of a tall man of middle age, who stated that he came from near Kidderminster, and had been hop- picking in the neighbour- hood ; he also makes tin- ware and hawks it about the coutry. Another man called a few days after the donkey was sold and wanted to buy it: he was tall and stout, and dressed in a velveteen jacket, and had the appearance of a gamekeeper, who, it is supposed, is connected with the man who sold the donkey and afterwards stole it. Information to be given to Superintendent Harwood, Bromyard, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, October 8. Stolen from a field at Chelwood, dhring the night of the 1st instant: a brown cart Mare, 4 years old, 15 hands 1 inch high, switch tail to the hock, near hind leg white to the hock, white face, and scar on nose. Supposed by a middle aged man, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high ; dressed iu round fur cap, white slop, aud light trousers, having the appearance of a navvy. £ b reward will be paid by the owner Sir. William Osmond, for such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the mare. Information to be given to Superintendent Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol. — Bow- street, October 6. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Curdworth, the property of Mr. Stephen Richardson, at about 7 p. m. on the 6th instant: a LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of a gipsy named HENRY WHITE, alias STANLEY, charged with stealing, on the night of the 6th instant, four Fowls, the property of Misses Legg, in the parish of Fordington : about 24 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, very dark brown hair, very dark hazel eyes, sallow complexion, heavy eyebrows, dimple chin, several moles on right side of neck, cut on side of forefinger of left hand, and top of left thumb fiat; he generally travels about the west of England with other gipsies, mending cane and rush bottom chairs. He has been previously convicted of larceny in the county of Dorset. A gipsy named WILLIAM JAMES has been remanded until the 11th instant on the same charge. Information to be given to Superintendent Hare, Dorset Constabulary, Dorchester, who holds a warrant for White's apprehension.— Bow- street, October 10. Description of SIDNEY TASKER, late of Corsham, Wilts, charged with embezzling various sums of Money since May last: he is apparently from 28 to 30 years of age, about 5 feet high, rather thick- set, light complexion and hair, very little whiskers, and has a sqeaking voice ; is a baker, and is fond of singing in public and beer- houses. Information to be given to Superintendent Wiltshire, Chippenham, or to Inspector Gerrard, Corsham, Wilts, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 10. Stolen from Mr. Bradford, jeweller, Strand, Torquay, about 6 p. m. on the 7th instant, by two men ( whilst examin- ing other rings), a lady's half- hoop diamond Ring, with three large and four small stones: one is about 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, is much pockmarked, and has a foreign accent ; dressed a brown overcoat with brown velvet collar, dark trousers, and high hat; wears spectacles when examining anything; the other is about 36 years of age, 5 feet 8h inches high, sandy whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, fair complexion, sharp features, and very affable iu manner; dressed in a dark coat with side- pockets, dark trousers, and high hat. A liberal reward will be given on their conviction. Information to be given to Superintendent Vaughan, or to Sergeant Ockford, Devon Constabulary, Town Hall, Torquay. — Boio- ttreet, October 10. Stolen during the night of the 8th instant, from a bed- room at the Goat Lodging- house : I2s. in Silver, and about 3s. in Coppers, the property of William Howard. By a man 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sandy whiskers ; drsssed in dark coat, cap, and fustian or corduroy trousers. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Pike, Police Office, St. Alban's, Herts.— Bcno- street, October 10. Stolen in Shrewsbury, on the 6th instant: two brown paper Parcels, one of which contained 281bs. of Irish roll Tobacco, in 7 parts, aud the other two boxes of Cigars. By a man, about 57 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark com- plexion, grey hair and whiskers, front of face shaved, and said he was an implement maker ; dressed in sleeved waist- coat, with slate eolour sleeves, Scotch plaid trousers and cap, with small peak and button on top, and wore a dark blue apron. Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, Borough Police Office, Shrewsbury, Salop. — Bow- street, October 10. Absconded on the 4th instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: WILLIAM BALL, late of 73, Cowley- road, Vassall- road, Brixton, about 42 years of age, 5 ft. 7 ins. high, short ligfct hair, rather bald, fair complexion, blue or grey eyes, full oval face, small light whiskers, rather stout and proportionately built; and respectably dressed. Infor- mation to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Detec- tive Department, 26, Old Jewry, London, E. C.— Bow- street, October 10. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who shall give in- formation that will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the man who absconded from the Windmill Inn, Banbury, on the morning of the 8th instant, stealing a gold lever Watch, open face, gold dial, rim cap, four holes jewelled, No. 8575, maker M. Phillips, Banbury ; a silver Geneva Watch, with white dial ; two gold necklet Chains, one with locket attached ; and a pair of Ear- rings, tortoise- shell, inlaid with gold. The man is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, short dark hair about the chin, large prominent nose, rather red, slightly round- shouldered ; dressed in a dark blue pilot jacket, bound with braid, dark blue tronsers, soft dark billycock hat, and thick heavy lace- up boots. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Thompson, Banbury, Oxon.— Bow- street, October 10. Description of WILLIAM MARCHENT, the porter of the Cranbrook Union, who absconded on the 8th instant, charged witk stealing £< i 5s. : he is 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or S inches high, fair complexion, slight sandy moustache, and whiskers under chin ; dressed in dark clothes and black round felt hat, and carried an umbrella ; a native of Chailey, Sussex, and was formerly an attendant at the Asylum for Idiots at Red Hill, Surrey. He may endeavour to emigrate. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, Kent Constabulary, Cranbrook, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 10. Stolen from the King's Arms, public- house, in Lewes, on the 3rd instant: a gold Watch, and gold neck Chain, since found pledged in Brighton. By three young men who lodged at the King's Arms, on the night of the 2nd, and left at 8 a. m. on the 3rd instant, they lodged at the William the Fourth public- house, in Brighton, on the night of the 3rd, and left at 9 a. m. on the 4th instant: one is about 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh cemplexion, sharp features, brown hair ; dressed in dark jacket, vest, aud trousers, black hard felt hat, and light canvas cricketing boots; another 18 to 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, slight; dressed ir dark jacket, vest, and trousers, and black hard felt hat; and the other 19 to 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, pale complexion, light brown hair, slight figure ; dressed in dark jacket, vest, and trousers, and black hard felt hat. The watch and chain were pledged in the name of CHARLES MEAD ; one of the men was carrying a black bag, and they were of respectable appearance. Information to be given to Superintendent Peacock, Lewes, or at any Police Station in Easi Sussex.— Bow- st., October 10. Further information respecting WILLIAM HENRY ELLIS, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 29th ultimo, charged with embezzlement at Welshpool. £ 2 reward is now offered for his apprehension, and a photograph can be seen on application to Superintendent Stretford, or to Police Constable Ellis, Police Station, Welshpool, Montgomery- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boic- street, October 10. Description of THOMAS C. He absconded on the 4th instant, in company with a man, also a shoemaker, about 22 years of age, 6 feet high, stout figure, full face, pockpitted, and no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in a grey suit. A young woman with a black eye, is supposed to be with them. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Town Hall, Tunbridge Well's, Kent .- Bow- street, October 8. Description of FREDERICK WIGHTMAN, charged with stealing two Sheepskins ( recovered), the property of Richard Elmstone, licensed victualler, at Biddenden, on the 29th ultimo : about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, very dark complexion, no whiskers or moustache, black hair, full hazel eyes, very sharp appearance, and good- looking; dressed in long drab cloth jacket, pockets on hips, one in left breast, dark green plaid trousers, very dirty, soft round hat, and old sidespritig boots ; has been iu the Royal Marines artd West Kent Militia ; he was convicted of larceny at Lewes, Sussex, and sentenced to three months hard labour; he is well known in Kent and Sussex. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, Kent Constabulary, Cran- brbok, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 8. Stolen from the shop of Hugh Griffiths, in Bromyard, ori the ihorning of the 4th instant : a pair of emperor's Boots ; a pair of shooting Boots, with four brass hooks on the side, toe'capped, and goloshed ; a white calico Shirt; a grey felt Hat; a pair of Razors ; a pair of Scissors ; a shoe- maker's Knife ; Snd a print shaving Cloth. By a man, 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet' 9 or JO inches high, fair complexion, sandy whiskers and moustache ; dressed in a snuff- colomed monkey jacket, black cloth trousers, and old billycock hat. He frequents public' and beer- houses, imitates cocks crowing and hens calling their chickens ; has been harvesting in the neighbourhood, and it is supposed that he has been living iu Birmingham. He was seen in Worcester after the larcony. Information to be given to Superintendent Harwood, Brom- yard, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, October 8. Stolen on the 29th ultimo, at 7 a. m., the property of Freeman Marshall, Whitby : a Telescope, 6 or 7 inches long when closed, with six or seven Slides, inscription on the first slide—'' Forgery, Dolland, London ; improved night or day'; had a brass cap on the thick end with three slits which act as a spring, covered with puce morocco leather. By a man who gave the name of EDWARD EDMUNDS, and had the appearance of a groom, 26 to 30 years of age, 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins. high, fresh complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, small light moustache, clipped short, full fade, rather large nose, lost several front teeth ; dressed iu a short dark coat, loose browu overcoat with velvet collar, button holes much worn, light drab cloth trousers, rather dirty, may have a dark pair under- neath, elastic- side boots with fancy toecaps, black billycock hat, and narrow green necktie. He states he was engaged as an engineer on the Whitby and Scarborough Railway, which is false. He has been traced to Redcar, where he committed another larceny on the 4th instant and absconded. Information to be given to Superintendent Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby, who holds a wrrrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 8. The offer of a reward of .£ 25 for the apprehension of JAMES B. SARGENT, a Poor Rate's collector, charged with embezzlement, and described iu the Police Gazette iu March, 1868, is withdrawn, and the warrant is not to be executed.— Bow- street, October 8. On the night of the 23rd ultimo, several bedrooms at the ' White Hart' hotel, iu Newmarket, were entered while the occupants slept, and the following Property ( not recovered) stolen, viz.: two £ 5 Notes and about £ 22 in Gold ; a double- case gold Watch, with ' Spellman ' in small letters on the dial; a gold Bramah Key ; two Watch Keys, and Albert Chain attached. A reward of j£ 10 will be paid for the recovery of the watch and appendages and conviction of the offender. A man of the following description, who occupied a chamber on the floor, has been apprehended on suspicion of committing the larcenies; on his person was found a skeleton Key, and in his Bag, a small seven- chamber revolver Pistol, loaded and capped ; he gives the name of THOMAS JEFFERSON JOHNSON, of London, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair, thin on top of head, prominent forehead, double scar over right eye, small scar on left eyebrow, hazel eyes, sandy brown moustache, beard and whiskers shaved off, proportionately built, long thin visage, very flat cheeks, burn mark about the size of the palm of the hand on right arm, near the shoulder, slightly deaf, good set of teeth, both ears project from the head considerably, has rather a gruff voice, with a slight Irish or American accent, aud states that he has been in America ; dressed in black striped twill trousers, blue frock coat and vest, side- spring boots, all nearly new, a fashionable high crown black hat, small narrow black cravat, and turndown collar, carries a silver double- case Watch and gold albert Chain, and a new brown leather bag and brown silk um- brella, also a brown striped sailor's knot cravat, in addition to the one he has in wear. He has been committed to Bury St. Edmunds Gaol for three months as a rogue and vagabond. Information to be given to Inspector Steggles, Newmarket, Suffolk, or to Deputy Chief Constable Glasier, Mildenhall, Suffolk. - Bow- street, October 6. man's size, nearly new, and ifh imitation gold Brooch, large size, new. By a man and woman who had lodged there eleven days : The man is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high pale face, black hair, ditto whiskers on end of chin, and moustache; dressed in blue cloth coat bound with braid dark cloth vest and trousers, boots, and black billycock hat. The woman appears to be a little older than the man, tall and slender, long thin features, and prominent nose ; she is much addicted to taking snuff and drinking ; dressed in grey woollen shawl with striped border, brown stuff dress skirt, grey winsey bodice, boots, and black bonnet.
