Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the some, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, aU Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. W.," as they cannot be published without hiB authority. low flat- crowned black hat, with narrow brim, and had strapped from the shoulder a canvas bag, containing a dark- coloured flute, with one German silver key, and a screw driver ; he carried in the outside breast pocket a savings bank book, bearing the post office stamp ' Cranborne.' In- formation to be given to Head Constable White, Salisbury, Wilts.— Dow- street, September 26. Stolen on the 18th instant, at Salehurst, Sussex, by housebreaking : a £ 5 Bank of England Note, supposed to have ' B. F. Huggett' on back ; 34 Sovereigns ; 25s. in Silver; a shilling's worth of Coppers; three plain gold wedding Rings; a silver hunting Watch, maker Attwood, Lewes ; and a small size German silver Watch. Supposed by a man, 50 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, red whiskers, stout figure; dressed in old black suit, high black bat, and carrying an old guano bag. Information to be given to Superintendent Jenner, Court House, Battle, or at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes.— Bow- street, September' 24. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 29th ultimo the body of a male infant Child was found on the sands near Pettman's Bathing Establishment, Margate : a Coroner's Inquest was held on the 30th, and a verdict returned of Wilful Murder against some parson or persons unknown. £ 50 reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to auy person who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers : and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice not being the person who actually committed the Murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to Superintendent Compton, Town Hall, Margate.— Bow- street, September 26. ROBBERY AND LARCENY PROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Udimore, Sussex, about 3 p. m. on the 21st instant : a lari^ e silver pair- case verge Watch, with the name of ' Charles Lockyer, Sandhurst,' printed on the face. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superintendent Jeffery, j Guestling, near Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- st., September 29. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 28tli ultimo, the booking office j at the Passenger Railway Station, Middlesborough, was | broken into, aud about 15s. in Copper money stolen therein. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, i Middlesborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, October 1. Two cottages were broken into at Docklow, in the eounty of Herefordshire, between 7 a. m. and 7 p. m. on the 27th instant, and the following property stolen : a Half- Sovereigu and 6s. in silver ; a double- breasted black cloth jacket, velvet collar, the flaps of pockets buttoned down, light drab lining. Two men, tramps, of the following description are suspected : one about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair, sandy whiskers, much sunburnt, aud has the appearance of a sailor ; dressed in a dark groom's jacket, black trousers, and very old shoes, cut ir trout; the other about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, small sandy moustache ; dressed iu dirty navy slop, light trousers, and black cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Dykes, Leominster, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, September 29. During the night of the 23rd instant, a store room at the Old Park forge, near Wellington, Salop, was broken into, and about 4 cwt. weight of new aud old mill Brasses of various sizes aud patterns, were stolen therein ; the property of the Wellington iron aud coal company limited. A reward of £ 10 will be paid for such information that will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. In- formation to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Turner, Madeley, Salop.— Bow- street, September 26. Between the evening of the 20th, aud 10 o'clock on the morning of the 23rd instant, two contribution Boxes, attached to the West Aisle of St. Edmund's Church, Salis- bury, were broken epen, and their contents stolen therein. By a youth, apparently from 15 to 17 years of age, rather- short and stout, who stated at the house where he had lodged that he came from Wimborne, Dorset; dressed in a pair of plaid trousers, round speckled jacket, two dark waistcoats, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field adjoining the turnpike road, between Broughton and Tadmarton, in the county of Oxford, on the 26th ultimo: a fat Ox, short- horn breed, red colour, with small white spots, the property of Mrs. Salmon, of Tadmarton. Information to be given to Mrs. Salmon, Tadmarton, or to Superintendent Whadcoat, Banbury, Oxfordshire.— Bow- street, October 3. Stolen during the night of the 29th ultimo, from Offley House, Sandbach : two Shropshire ayd Anglesea yearling Ewes, marked between the ears with a little blue paint, the property of Mr. Joseph Hall. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to Mr. Hall. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Roubottom, Constabulary Station, Middlewich, or to Inspector Hulme, Constabulary Station, Sandbach, Cheshire. — Bow- street, October 3. Stolen from a field at Hunton, about the 15th August last: a brown entire Donkey, about ll£ hands high, lame of the near hind leg. Information to be given io Superinten- dent Alderson, North Riding Constabulary, Leyburn, York-, shire.— Bow- street, October 3. Stolen form a field near Red House, parish of Tattenhall' on the 28th ultimo : a light brown Horse, 3 years old, 15 hands high, black streak down centre of back, both hind feet white, and in good condition. Information to be given I to Inspector McCrea, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton.— Bow- street, October 3. Stolen during the night of the 26th ultimo, from Sp « ld- hurst, Kent: a black mare Pony, 12 hands high, off eye blind, two small white spots on top of rump, a little lame in near hind leg, a small scratch on hear side, aged. Information to be given to Superintendent Dance, Police Court, Tonbridge, ' Kent.— Bow- street, October 1. With reference to the Horse stolen from Godstone, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 25th August last. A reward of £ 10 will be paid on the recovery of the horse, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Murtell, Surrey Conslabulary, Godstone.— Bow- street, October}., Description of a man charged with having stolen a Horse at Sheffield, which he rode by Hope, Castleton, aud Chapel- en- le- Frith, to Whaley- bridge, where he Bold it at a public- house, on the 16th instant : he is about 50 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dirty looking, hump- backed, he walked with a crutch and stick, his right leg seeming shorter than the left ; dressed in a long dark coat, cord trousers, aud billycock hat, but he may have bought other clothing since he sold the horse ; i he left Whaley- bridge by train, but it is not known where he booked to. He was convicted at Derby County Sessions, January 3rd, 1872, for horse stealing, and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment; when iu custody at Derby he had in his possession a pedlar's certificate; granted at Con way, N. W., in tne name of John Watson. A reward will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield, who holds a warrant for his ay prehension, of whom photographs will be forwarded on application.— Bow- street, September 24. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Church Gresltey, on the 22nd ultimo, charged with stealing a silver verge Watch, with a slight crack on dial, Mid a silver Guard, the property of Hezekiah Soars : CHARLES PERCY, labourer or collier, a native of Kentish Town, London, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, proportionate make, dark brown hair, round pale face, very slight beard or whiskers, aud has a mole on the side of his face with a few hairs growing out of it; dressed in coarse dark coat, cotton cord trousers, and soft white billycock hat Information to be given to Superinten- dent Carline, Police Office, Woodenbox, near Burton- on- Trent, Derbyshire, who holds a warrant for Iris apprehension. — Bow- street, October 3. Absconded from Nairn, charged with several cases of breach of trust and embezzlement: ALEXANDER FINLAY MACLENNAN, farmer at Meikle Urchany, in the county ot Nairn, and traveller for Robert Fraser, Esq., distiller, Brackla : about 60 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, grey hair, bald on top of head, grey whiskers, very small, and on back part of cheeks only, round face, fresh complexion, stout make, and has a smart, active appearance ; dressed in black satin hat, brown great coat, black under coat, •""< steel- grey mixture trousers, aud carried an umbrella ; it is believed that he will try to get abroad, probably for Otago ; was last seen on the 24th ultimo, in a railway carriage near Perth, going southward; he has a relative, a fanner, residing near Bathgate, and another, also a farmer, near Haddington. If found, he is to be apprehended, and information given to the Chief Constable at Nairn, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 3. Absconded from Wheatley- hill, Durham, on the 19th ult., charged with stealing fourteen gold ana silver Watches ( thirteen of which have been recovered), from his master, Christopher McLaughlin, a travelling auctioneer or ' Cheap Jack THOMAS MARSDEN, travelling auctioneer's assistant, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout, sallow- complexion, dark hair, thin whiskers and moustache, and has a peculiar way of moving his shoulders and arms when walking ; dressed in striped tweed trousers and vest ( double- breasted), light tweed shooting coat, and light billycock hat; he was last seen at Leeds, where he pledged ten of the watches; he is likely to start business as a travelling auctioneer in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Scott, Con; ' ," Police Office, Castle Eden, Durham.— Bow- street, October 3. Absconded from Nottingham, on the 16th nit., charged on a warrant'with stealing a silver verge Watch : - CHARLES HANCOCK, 19 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair ; dressed iu light trousers and vest, brown coat, light billycock hat ( sometimes wears a Scotch cap), and Wellington boots with very thick soles. In formation to be given to Chief Constable Poyntz, Borough Police Station, Nottingham.— Bow- streef, October 3. Stolen between 6 and 7- 30 a. m. on the 30th ultimo, from a dwelling- house at Dartford, Kent: a monkey Jacket, velvet collar; a ditto, light velvet collar; a dark blue Coat and Vest • a pair of man's side- spring Boots; a pair of ribbed drab Trousers; a sealskin Cap ; and an old silver Watch. By a tramping shoemaker, who lodged in the house about two weeks, and was traced towards London, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark complexion, and crooked nose ; dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given to Superintendent Fread, Kent County Constabulary, Dartford.— Bow- sto- eei, October 3. Absconded on the 25th ultimo, charged with stealing, the property of his late employers: a man about 38 years of age, 5 feet 10^ inches high, dark hair, whiskers, and beard, worn under the chin, dark eyes, fresh complexion, broad shoulders, stout made, thumb of right hand has been split from the nail, buru mark on back of one hand, and when walkiug has a slouching, gait and stoops ; was recently employed on the London, Chatham, and Dover Batiway, as an inspector of permanent ways. A warrant is issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to Head Constable Radley, Guildhall, Rochester, or to Inspector Kift, London, Chatham, and Dover Railway, Chatham Station.— Boic- strtet, October 3. Stolen between 10 p. m. on the 16th and 7 a. m. on the 17th ultimo, from the dwelling- house of Thomas Phillips, of Blaina : a pair of light lace- up Boots, about half- worn, brass eyelet- holes, and patent facings : by WILLIAM WADLEY, a labourer or collier, about 28 years of age, 5 feet or 9 inches high, rather slight made, dark sallow complexion, dark full eyes, dark hair, small whiskers, aud has lost his frout teeth ; dressed in an old blue monkey jacket, much worn, dark cloth trousers with brown stripes, black billycock hat with crown turned in, white cravat with red aud blue stripes, and old lace- up boots ; a native of Penycraig, near Ross, Hereford- shire. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Fowler, County Constabulary, Tredegar, or to Sergeant Williams, Police Station, Monmouthshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- streeet, October 3. Absconded from Wellingborough, on the 15tli ultimo, charged wrth stealing a black cloth Coat, with a pocket ou each hip, and one iuside left breast, and white striped lining in sleeves : HENRY WORKER, labourer, of Were- edges, Flitton, Bedfordshire, 21 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fresh complexion, light hail-; dressed iu white jacket, grey trousers and vest, cap with baud round it, and heavy lace- up boots with toecaps. Information to be given to Superintendent Poole, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bo.-- street, October 3. Absconded on- the 17th ultimo, chaiged on a warrant with stealing £ 100, monies of his employers, Messrs. Adams and Co., 18, Hosier- lane, Smithfield : WILLIAM HENRY BLAKEWAY, late of 33, De Lsune- street, Kenuingtou Park, 33 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, full fa^ e, very stout, sallow complexion, black hair and moustache, walks very lame ; dressed iu blue cutaway coat, dark vest and trousers, and black hat. Information to be giveu to the Inspector on duty, Smithfield Station, E. Description of EDWIN UTLEY, who is charged with embezzlement at South Tawton, in the county of Devon : he is 33 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, proportionate make, pale complexion, dark eyes, very- small tnin black whiskers, small black moustache, black hair turning grey ; was employed as clerk, is of good address, and well dressed. Is a native of Minehead. Somersetshire, but has recently been in Loudon. Information to be given to Sergeant Sherritf, Devon Con- stabulary, North Tawton, or to Superintendent Stoddart, Bow, Xoi th Devon.— Bb*;- afreet, October 1. Stolen fcom a cottage at Goldstone- heath on the 24th ins.: a a* ev clotji iw, lined. with striped m inel, am? cuffs bound witn black braid ; a double- breasted black cloth Waistcoat a single- breasted grey Ditto j and a dirty white Slop, nearly new. By two tramps, about £ 5 years of age ; one is tall and very slender ; dressed in dark trousers and short dirty grey jaeket. The other is a short man, dressed in old dirty moleskin trousers, and dark jacket. One of them has an awkward gait. They disposed of the grey Vest in Nantwich on the morning of the 25th instant. Information to be given to Superintendent Haines, Whitchurch, or to Sergeant tlowella, Market Drayton, Shropshire.— Bow- street, September 29. Absconded from Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, on the 7th instant, ehargsd with embezzling several sums of Money belonging to his employer, Mr. D. Lewis, grocer, & c, Welch- pool : WILLIAM HENRY ELLIS, grocer's assistant, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches h: gh, slenderly built, fair complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, very slight moustache, and has a large scar from a cut on the back of left hand ; dressed when last seen in light grey striped cloth trousers, dark cloth jacket, top hat, brown cloth overcoat, and elastic- side boots; is much addicted to smoking and drinking, and is supposed to have gone to Manchester, Liverpool, or some other large town, where it is likely he will endeavour to ob- tain a situation. Information to be given to Superintendent Strefford, or to Police Constable Ellis, Police Station, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boic- street, September 29. Description of LOUIS FELKER, alias WALKER, a German, charged with stealing from the dwelling- house of William Ber, of Meadow Bank, Winsford, on the 18th inst. : a small Geneva gold Watch, has had a new bow, is over- wound, and will not go ; a short string, with brass Key attached, anel has a shield qr Coat of Arms on back, with a small dent on Inner case; three Sovereigns; one Half- sovereign ; and two Prussian Thalers : he is 21 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, very light hair, light complexion, and small face; dressed in white felt hat, a suit of black, and Wellington boots ; has in his possession a pair of white linen Trousers, rule pocket at side, which baa been sewn up. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Mayho, Tarporley, Cheshire.— Bow- street, September 29. On the night of the 23rd instant, several bedrooms at the ' White Hart' hotel, in Newmarket, were entered and robbed while the occupants slept, and the following Property ( not recovered) stolen, viz.: a double- case gold Watch, with ' Spellman ' in small letters on the dial; two £ 5 Notes ; and about .£ 22 in gold. A man of the following description, who occupied a chamber on the floor, has been apprehended on suspicion : he gives the name of THOMAS JEFFERSON JOHNSON, of London, and refuses to give any further address, is 32 years of age, ft feet 7 inches high, dark brown haii. thin on top of head, prominent forehead, double scar over right eye, small scar on left eyebrow, hazel eyes, j sandy brown moustache, beard and whiskers shaved off, proportionately built, long thin visage, very flat cheeks, buru mark about the size of the palm of the hand on right arm, j near the shoulder, slightly deaf, good set of teeth, both ears project from the head considerably, has rather a gruff voice, with a slight Irish or American accent, and states that he has been in America ; dressed in black striped twill trousers, blue frock coat and vest, side- spring boots, all nearly uew, fashionable high crown black hat, small narrow black cravat, and turndown collar, wears a silver double- case Watch and gold albert Chain. Carries a uew brown leather bag and brown silk umbrella, also a striped brown sailor's knot cravat, in addition to the one he has iu wear. On his person was found a skeleton key, and iu his bag a small 7- chamber revolver pistol, loaded and capped. He has been sentenced to three months hard labour under the Vagrant Act. Infor- mation to be given to Inspector Steggles, Newmarket, or to Deputy Chief Constable Glasier, Mildenhall, Suffolk. Bow- street, September 29. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Ogden, in Butterworth, on the night of the 21st instant : £- 22 17s. and a cotton Bag, the property of William Hull. By THOMAS SMITH, a navvy, native of Hatfield, Essex, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 0 inches high, rather dark looking, dark hair, cut short, very slight whiskers, small feet, and has been a soldier ; dressed in old bine pilot cloth jacket, light mixture cloth vest, with- out collar, moleskin trousers, lace up boots, faacy stitched at sides, and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Brindle, County Police Office, Rochdale, Lancashire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- strecSeptember 26. Stolen on the morning of the 19th instant, from the dwelling- house of Ann Beck, 8, St. Mary's- place, Stafford : a dark grey waterproof Cloak; a Chemise edged with needle- work ; a gold Ring with white stones ; a pair of Ear- rings ; and a round common Brooch with red beads round it. By a woman who had lodged iu the house for about three weeks, and who absconded : sh-? is about 21 years of age, 5 feet high, stout build, dark hair, dark eyes, fresh complexion, rouud f* U face, good- looking, and of good address ; dressed in dark dress, black jacket, white hat trimmed with blue and black ribbon, and of respectable appearance ; she also ob- tained various sums of money from different persons under the representation that she would shortly come into posses- sion of a lar^ e fortune from her aunt, who she said resides at Hawthorn House, Stamford- bridge. Worcestershire. Previous to her coming to Stafford she lodged at No. 28, Blindsill Farnworth, Lancashire ; she is supposed to be known at Durham, as she lodged there previous to visiting Farnworth Information to be given to Inspector Bowen, Guildhall Stafford.— Bow- street, September 26. WILLIAM WHITE, a labourer, 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, very dark complexion, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, talks through his nose, having no roof to his mouth ; dressed, when he absconded, as an iron- stone labourer. And JOHN WOODING, shoe finisher, 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers ; dressed in dark pilot jacket, dark striped trousers, and dark cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Poole, Welling- borough, or to Inspector Williamson, County Constrbulary, Northampton, who hold warrants for their apprehension.— Bow- street, October 3. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of WILLIAM RENDELL, horticultural builder's foreman, who is charged with obtaining j£ l Is., by falsei ftfwteiNMH : about 40 yeaia ot age, 6 feet 6 w ; luohos eigli, sallow complexion, very dark hair,, bald on Vyi of head, dark beard, whiskers, and'' moustache, high fbrenead, dark deep set eyes, slightly round shouldered, stoops a little, is slightly iu- kueed, and speaks with London accent; dresses usually iu dark clothes. He will probably endeavour to emigrate. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glossop, Police Office, Moor- street, Birmingham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension,— Bow- street, October 3. Description of M. OSTROG, who states he is a doctor in the Russian Navy, for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued, charging him with obtaining by false and fraudulent pretences, at the parish of Eton, Bucks, on or about the 4th August last : a Work ic 3 volumes, called Smith's Dictionary of Biography and Mythology, also Smith's Dictionary of Geography, in 2 volumes, lie is about 40 yrs. of ace, about 5 feet 11 inches high, dark complexion, no whiskers, medium moustache, has a military appearance, can speak 7 different languages ; dressed when he left Windsor, on the let instant, in a light grey suit, and had a black suit in his possession. He was convicted on the 25th July, 1866, at Maidstone Assizes, for larceny, after previous conviction for felony, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude ; he was discharged from Chatham Prison on the 23rd May, 1873 ; he is known by the name of BERTRAND ASHLEY, and bis destination, Maidstone, Kent.
