Notice.— It is requested that all communication* for the pnrpoie of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in refereace to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. O. •„* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor miut be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Detertert and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Fall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Four men of the following description did wilfully kill and murder Thomas Monk, at Wistow, in the county of Leicester, by shooting him with a gun and otherwise injuring him by beating him on the head, during a poaching affray, on the 30th ultimo : One about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light brown hair, no whiskers, grey eyes, pale complexion, slight make, thin face, and scar of cut over left eye. Another, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, dark whiskers, cut short ( which may probably be shaved off), light grey eyes, dark complexion, and middle make. Another, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, and has a light moustache. The other, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, grey eyes, no whiskers, brown hair, round face, full mouth, turn- up nose, and middle make. They are shoe hauds by trade, residents of Leicester, and absconded on the day of the murder. Information to be given at the County Constabulary Office, Leicester, or to Superintendent Burdett, Aylestone, near Leicester.— Bow- street, August 6. FORGERY. Description of a man who on the 5th instant obtained a suit of Clothes, from a tailor in the borough of Bolton, and who tendered in payment a Post Office Order, for £ 3 Is., on the tailor taking the order to the Post Office to be cashed, it was discovered that it had been altered from Is. to the above amount; the man also presented a written order which turned out to have been forged : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sandy whiskers down sides of his face, fair complexion, proportionate make, aud walks with his toes turned out; dressed in a long black alpaca coat, buttoned up the front, striped cloth trousers, black felt hat, and lace- up boots, or may have on the suit of clothing which he obtained, which consist of a blue cloth shooting coat, with blue velvet collar, dark browu cloth vest, with amber and white stripes in, dark cloth trousers, with lavender stripes in, and trimmed with brass buttons with the words ' Clifton Register' thereon. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, August 8. Description of a man charged with having forged and altered a Post Office Order for Is. 6d. to £ 5 Is. 6d., at Barton, on the 4th instant, and obtaining 30s. upon it : an Irishman, having the appearance of a stableman or groom, 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair hail- aud complexion, small sandy whiskers on cheeks ; dressed in brown tweed or frieze coat, with pockets at sides, appears too large for him, shepherd's plaid trousers, black billycock hat, scarf with green aud black stripes, large pin, and wore a plated albert Guard. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Wilson, Tattenhall, or to Sergeant Powell, Malpas, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 8. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, on the 5th inst., at the South Eastern Railway Station, Canterbury : a gold stop Watch, minute hand, maker Stunt. Stolen from the person at Brighton, on the 5th instant: A gold Geneva Watch, opeu face, engine- turned, rather worn, maker Mouliere; also a gold Albert, large links, much worn. A gold lever hunting Chronometer, rather worn. A gold Watch, double case, cylinder works, enamelled face, maker De Lolme, London; and a gold cable Albert. A silver Geneva Watch, with gold Chain aud Whistle attached, No. 16 or 17. A silver Watch, gold gilt, silver face, makerj Tanner, Lewes, ' H. H.' engraved on back. A silver open- face Watch, capped and jewelled, engine- turned, rather worn. A silver Geneva Watch, open face, engine- turned. A gold linked Chain, and an old spade Guinea. A gold scarf Pin, pearl in centre, set round with small diamonds. A gold Scarf Pin, pearl iu centre, set round with diamonds. £ 10 reward. Stolen from the person in Bolton, on the lst instant: a gold Geneva lever Watch, No. 15478, steel hands, with tail to them, had attached a gold albert Chain, and a Locket. In- formation to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lan- cashire.— Bow- street, August 8. Stolen from a boy on the road about midway between Salisbury and Wilton, about 9 p. m. on the 2nd instant, a small Carpet- bag, containing J lb. of Tea, ^ lb. of loaf Sugar, A lb. of moist ditto, a small piece of Cheese, some Pepper and i Mustard : by a man about 5 feet high, and dressed in a straw hat, dark coat, light vest, and cord trousers. £ 1 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender. Stolen from the person at Chulmleigh Fair, Devon, on the 30th ultimo, a silver liver Watch, rather large size, open face, enamelled dial, sunk seconds, movement capped aud jewelled, No. 41153, maker George Webber, Crediton. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Wood, B Division, Devon Constabulary, Southmolton.— Bow- street, Augusta. Stolen from persons in Brighton since the 2ud instant : A silver open- face Watch, gold albert Chain with gold Locket attached. A small silver Geneva Watch, silver face, gold figures and seconds hands. A large gold Geneva Watch, very old, French make, double case, very flat. A gold Geneva Watch. Stolen from the person of John Gibb, at the Three Bridges Railway Station, Worth, on the 31st ultimo : an old- fashioned gold Watch, maker's name James Grimsby, London. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Kennard, Police Station, East Grinstead, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, August 4. Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the person at Perry Barr : a gentleman's gold open- faced enamelled Watch, with centre seconds, and a morocco leather maroon- coloured pocket Book. Information to be giveu to Sergeant Hackney, Staffordshire Constabulary, Handsworth, near Birmingham. — Bow- street, August 1. and initials ' J. A S.;' a ditto, plain ; and a gold Brooch, containing a plait of hair. Supposed by a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion and hair, dark grey eyes, whiskers shaved off, aud rather round- shouldered ; dressed in dark tweed suit, and deei stalker hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, August 8. On the evening of the 31st ultimo or morning of tie lst instant, the office of the Darlaston Steel and Iron Com- pany, Essington Wood Colliery, was broken and entered, aud a brass graduated Sextant, with Compas on the top, in oak Box, stolen therein. Whoever will give such informa- tion as aliall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 5 reward. Information to be given to Super- intendent Hill, Brownhills, near Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- sreet, August 6. Further particulars of the burglary at Oakfield Cottage, Kimbolton- road, Bedford, advertised in Police Gazette of the 4th instant: 1 small gold Chain. 1 gold watch Key. 1 gold Seal, plain white stone. 1 Ditto, cornelian stone, with figure of a man's head and flowing beard. 1 gold Seal, figure of a cock and initials ' I. AS.' 1 Ditto, plain. And 1 gold Brooch, containing a plait of hair, were also stolen. Information to be given to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, August 6. Stolen between the 25th and 28th ultimo, at No. 6, Victoria- road, Penrith, by means of housebreaking : an old- fashioned gold verge Watch, Box, and Case, plain cases, seconds hand, and round pendant, attached to it was an old- fashioned large- linked gold Chain, with Seals; a pair of old- fashioned silver Sugar Tongs; a pair o£ German silver ditto ; aud a small silver tea- caddy Spoon. In effecting an entrance two chisels had been used, one about J- inch wide, and the other about 1 inch wide. Information to be given to Super- intendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, August 4. Stolen, by means of housebreaking, on the 2nd instant, in the parish of Hurstpierpoint, Sussex : a pair of half Boots, nailed and pelted, nearly new; a pair of old worsted cord Trousers ; a black cloth Jacket ; a black corded Waistcoat; a flannel Guernsey ; a flannel Shirt; a black billycock Hat; a Handkerchief, with blue and red stripes, cut in halves; and a brown leather money Purse, containing Is. 7d., the property of Henry Sayer, labourer. Supposed by a tramp, about 19 ye4rs of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark com- plexion and hair ; dressed in old dark cloth clothes, dirty and ragged, and carried a guano bag over his shoulders. Infor- mation to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superintendent Pocock, Cuckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, August 4. Between 9 p. m. on the 31st ultimo, and 6 a. m. on the lst instant, the dwelling- house of Mrs. Ismay, Clifton- terrace, Wigton, Cumberland, was oroken into, and the following articles stolen therein : an old- fashioned gold Watch, with lose cases, bulged, much worn, and white dial; a silver lever Watch, maker Blaylock, Carlisle, No. 51625 ; a gold double eye Glass ; a cameo gold Brooch, with the figure of a female holding a vase in one band; a peculiar pebble Brooch, nearly white in the centre; a topaz gold Brooch, with five stones iu it, the shape of a violet ; a gold Locket, with split Ring, Seal and Key attached, with ' Joseph Addison, aged 24 years, died 1856,' engraved inside, also had hair in it; a small silver Toothpick, embossed, slides like a telescope ; an old- fashioned gold Brooch; and a pebble Bracelet, set iu silver. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Robinson, Wigton, or at the Office of the County Chief Constable, Carlisle.— Bow- street, August 4. During the night of the 26th ultimo, the railway Station at Abertillery was broken into, and a parcel containing the following articles stolen therein : a double- breasted black cloth Coat, three black cloth buttons each side, two at the back, two pockets outside with flaps, and one inside left breast; a double- breasted black cloth Vest, no collar ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, fly fronts, and raised seams down side of legs ; a white calico Shirt, linen front ; a light Necktie, with yellow flowers in front ; a black Necktie with blue stripes ; aud a pair of elastic- side Boots, patent leather, and sprigged soles, all nearly new. Information to be given at the Chief Constables Office, Abergavenny, or to Superinten- dent Fowler, Tredegar Iron Works, Monmouth— Bow- street, August 4. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 30th ultimo, the dwelling- house of John Abraham Smith, Oakfield- cottage, Kimbolton- road, Bedford, was broken into, and stolen therein : six silver Tea Spoons, marked ' M. S.;' six silver Dessert Spoons, marked with a lion aud flag ; a Pencil- case, Fruit Knife, Thimble, and two Salt Spoons, all silver ; some silver Coins ( sc- nn were French) ; a small gold Chain aud Watch Key ; a gold Seal, plain white stone ; a ditto, cornelian stone, with figure of a man's head with flowing beard ; a ditto, figure of a cock HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Sheffield, on the night of the 30th ultimo, the property of John Allsop, Sheffield : a dark brown Mare, about 5 years old, about 15i hands high, black legs, and white star on forehead. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Hill, Brownhills, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, August 8. Description of JOSEPH COOK, who is charged with stealing two Donkeys from a field, in Tranmere, on the 31st ultimo : about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, broad set, swarthy complexion, broad flat face, hair turning grey, and shaves off his whiskers ; he is a labourer, and 2 P O L I C E GAZE 1 i Ji. August 8 generally works in ship yards, and has relations in London and Liverpool. The Donkeys have since been recovered, having been sold by Cook. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Hall, Abbey- street, Birken- head, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 6. Stolen or strayed on the 22nu ultimo, from a field in Lower Lansbury- road, Hampton : a bay Cob, 16 hands 1 inch high, black points, small white saddle marks, marked on knees, small swelliug on elbow, scars on heels, hoofs rather flat, slightly lame, half ?. hoes on fore feet, none on hind.— — Metropolitan Police, T Division, August 6. Stolen between 2 p. m. 29th and 6 a. m. ou the 30th ult., from a field at the back of the Woodlands, Hill Top, the property of Mr. William Field, coal master, Alma Cottage, West Bromwich : a dark brown Mare, aged, about 15 hands high, short thick tail, large head, which it carries low when walking, large belly, walks very awkward aud sluggish, and is in fair working condition. Any person giving such infor- mation as shall lead to the apprehension of the offender and recovery of the Mare will be rewarded and all expences paid, on application " to Mr. William Field, Alma Cottage, West Bromwich, or to Superintendent Holland, Police Office, Wednesbury, Staffordshire.— Brno- street, August 6. Found straying in Sandbach, on the 4th instant: a small grey mare Pony, which is supposed to have been stolen. Information to be given to Superintendent Roubottom, Constabulary Station, Middlewich, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 6. Further description of a Pony stolen from Bircher Yarpole, Herefordshire, ou the 16th June last : it is 7 years old, 12 hands high, bright bay colour, little white on hind leg, small saddle mark, hind legs low hocked, and mane cut on under side. A boy named WM. WILLIAMS is charged with stealing the same : he is 15 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, dark grey eyes, and brown hair cut short; dressed in white long frock, cord trousers, old strong boots, one toe worn off, and black low crown hat with wide brim, which is broken. £ 1 reward will be paid on recovery of the pony and conviction of the offender. Information to be given to Superintendent Dykes, Leominster, Herefordshire. — Bow- street, August 6. Stolen from a field at Quarry Bank, Brierley- hill, on the 6th ultimo, the property of John Brown, of Quarry Bank: a light grey Cob, about 14 hands high, bang tail, aged, and two scarred knees. Information to lie given to Superinten- dent Mills, Police Office, Brierley- hill, Staffordshire.— Bvw- street, August 4. Supposed to have been stolen, from Minterne Parva Dorset, since the 10th May last : fourteen Lambs, marked' on the ott' side with the letter ' C,,' the properly of Mr. Wm. Cross. Information to be given to Superintendent Batty, Cerne Abbas, Dorset.— Bow- street, August 4, Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from a field in the parish of Newport, the property of Mr. James Warren, innkeeper: an aged bright bay Horse, 15 hands 2 inches high, black mane aud tail, white st « r on forehead, and the hind legs white | about half way from the fetlocks to the hocks. Information to be given at the Police Station, Newport, Essex.— Bow- street, August 1. Stolen from a field at Rhigos, near Hirwain, in the county of Glamorgan, some time during the night of the 23rd ultimo : a dark bay Horse, 3 years old, about 15 hands high, with black mane and tail, aud black legs, value .£ 28,. the property of David Morgans. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas, Constabulary Office, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan.— Bow- street, August 1. Lichfield by train, at 12- 25 p. m. on the 5th instant, booking for Liverpool, with an intention to emigrate to America. The woman is 22 years of age, short, and dressed in black. Information to be given to Sergeant Goddard, Police Station, Rugeley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, August 8. Absconded on the 26th ultimo, from 34, Wellington- street, Strand, embezzling the sum of £ 233 10s. 3d., the money of his employer : a clerk, 30 years of age, 5 feet 2 ins. high, fair complexion, light hair, small moustache, rough skin, excited'manner, has one false tooth in upper jaw ; dressed in light coat, pockets ou hips, shepherd's plaid trousers, dark mixture vest, side- spring boots, Wellington fronts, and a black soft felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, August 6. ' Stolen in the borough of Great Grimsby, on the 4th instant: a Shawl ( recovered) and a pair of boy's elastic- side Boots, uewly soled and heeled. By a man, 40 or 50 years of age, short, and very thin ; dressed in a swallow- tailed coat, torn under the arn, no vest, light cord trousers, and very old blucher boots. Had a boy with him, about 13 years of age, tall aiid'thin; dressed iu dark brown round jacket, with brass buttons, eord trousers, and may be wearing the stolen boots. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Campbell, Town Hall, Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, August 6. tised Grzette 1st instant, oharged larceny at Brighton, have been apprehended.— Bow- street, ' August 6. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT, Description of a coppersmith and cloth hawker, late of Doncaater, Yorkshire, charged at Pontefract with larceny as a bailee : about 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, small moustache, aud slender build ; dressed in dark brown shooting jacket, grey vest, snuff- coloured trousers with grey stripe, strong boots, with brass lace- holes, ami newly heeled, and a new billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, West Riding Constabulary, Pontefract. — Bow- street, August 8. Absconded from the borough of Shrewsbury, on the 28th ultimo, charged^ with jstealiDg £ 4 : a woman who gave the Description of a man charged with stealing in a lodging- house at Barton- upon- Humber, on the 29th ultimo, three plum Cakes and about 4 lbs. of cooked Bacon, the property of George Foster, a fellow- lodger : about 40 years of age, 6 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown whiskers, and hair turning grey; dressed in an old velvet jacket, cord or fustian tiousers, and cap with fur round it. He may be found in a brick- yard or at a low beer- house. Information to be given to Superintendent Thorsby, Barton- upon- Humber, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, August 4, Absconded from the workhouse of the Orsett Union, at Orsett, j in the County of Essex, early on the morning of the 20th June last, stealing and taking with him a pair of Trousers, belonging to the Guardians, and leaving his wife Elizabeth Gunn, still au inmate of the workhouse : WILLIAM BARNABAS GUNN, late an inmate, about 65 years'of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, grey hair and whiskers ; supposed dressed in white slop, cord trousers, wideawake hat; supposed living in the neighbourhood of Ilford. £ 1 reward will be paid to any person who shall give such information as will lead to his apprehension and conviction. Information to be given ta Iuspector Pepper, Police Station, Romford, or to Inspector Freeman. Police Station, Orsett, Essex, who holds a Warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 4. Absconded on the 25th ultimo, charged with stealing £ 11 12s. 6d.: a youth, 17 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, and dark hair ; dressed in light tweed coat, black cloth vest, cord trousers, and lace boots.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, August 4. Absconded from Smethwick on the 22nd ultimo, charged with embezzling £ 3 14s., the monies of his employer : ALFRED WATSON, alias RALPH WATSON, alias ALFRED DEESTE, 18 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair Complexion, dark brown hair, which he wears turned up in the front ( not parted) ; dressed in a black billycock hat, light grey motikey jacket, dark Check trousers, with black stripe down sides, and is a baker and confectioner; a native of Oxford. Information to be given to Inspector McWilliams, Smethwick, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, August 4. Absconded on the 29th ultimo, from 404, Edgeware- road, charged with embezzling £ 50 : a man, 50 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slight build, grey hair and whiskers, high cheek bones, flushed face, thick hps, rather wide mouth, aud a slight dent on middle of nose ; dressed in dark coat and vest, light trousers, white shirt, black necktie and hat.— Metropolitan Police, D Division, August 4. Absconded, charged with embezzling, on or about the 2nd ultimo, at Handsworth, the sum of 5s., the monies of his master : ARTHUR MULLIS, alias NORRIS, farm labourer, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, light brown hair, and small light whiskers; he is a native of Kerseley, friends reside at CamberwelL— Metropolitan Police, E Division, Augutt 1. Description of WILLIAM DONKLEY, charged at Newcastle- ow- Tyne on a warrant with purloining six dozen boot Tops : he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark brown hair, dark eyes, dark thin whiskers round the face, slight dark moustache, swarthy complexion, several scars on neck, result of runnings ; he is a fitter and machinist in the shoe trade, is a good workman, and a native of North- amptonshire ; was accompanied by his wife and child when he absconded on the 23rd ultimo, his father resides at Wellingborough, Nottinghamshire.
