CONTAINING Thi ivbst^ ee of all Informations received in easee of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged will Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5354 FRIDAY, MAY 9, 1873. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mb. W. D. BUKNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should bo appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thoreof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the afternoon of the 3rd instant, the dead Body of a female child, 4 or 5 months old, was found on Haywards- heatli, in the parish of Cuckfield : the child had light hair, and four vaccination marks on left arm ; had on an old cotton night gown, shirt, swathe, and napkin, and wrapped in part of an old black shawl. A woman of the following description was seen about 9 30 a. m. on the 1st instant, carrying a parcel, similar to that found, also a small carpet bag, and soon after was seen coming in the direction from the place where the child was found, without the parcel, but still carrying the bag, and went to the railway station at about 11' 20 a. m., and left for Brighton, she is about 30 years of age ; dressed in light cotton dress, rusty black velvet jacket, supposed black hat, with black fall, which she kept over her face. An inquest was held on the 5th instant, aud adjourned till 6 p. m. on the 22ud instant. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superin- tendent Pocock, Cuckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, May 7. About 8 a. m. on the 8th inst., the dead body of Joseph Cowling, 2 years old, was found iu a small pool of water in a field iu Grange- road, Fountain- road, in the borough of Kingston- upon- HulI, with his face downwards, partly covered with twigs, and nearly naked. Deceased left his home in Hill- street to play about half- past three in the afternoon of the previous day, and at that time was dressed in a light green frock with dark spots, white pinafore, dark merino skirt, red flannel petticoat, and small grey hat, which were all taken off the child. At an adjourned inquest held at the Town Hall on the 23rd inst., a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers of the child; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice ( not being the actual murderer), who will give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Stolen at the steeple- chase held at Bexhill, on the 21st instant, from the person : a large silver hunting Watch ; a leather Portemonnaie, containing 2s.; a leather Purse, con- taining 5s. 6d. ; a black leather Portemonnaie, containing 8s.; a black leather Purse, containing 8s. ; a packet of small Needles ; and a railway return Ticket, for 21st April, 1873, from Bexhill to Hastings. Information to be given to Super- intendent Jeffery, Guestling, Hastings, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, April 30. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on the 25th ultimo, at Croydon Races : a double- ease gold hunting Watch, 3|- plate lever, No. 17324, makers Hammon aud Sons, ' Thomas Bridgewater, Gift of his Mother in Law, April, 1862,' ou inside case. £ 10 reward.— Metropo- litan Police, W Division, May 7. Stolen from the person of three gentlemen, at Sevenoaks Races, on the 3rd instant: a large- sized Opera Glass, dark barrels, with morocca leather on the off barrel; an open- face wold French Watch, very thin ; a silver lever Watch, maker Bennett, Cheapside, London. Information to be given to Superintendent O'Kill, or to Sergeant Pope, Kent County Constabulary, Sevenoaks. - Bow- street, May 7. Stolen from the person at Newmarket Race Course, on the 30th ultimo, a gold horizontal hunting Watch, No. 15917, chased case, rather worn. At the railway station on the 2ud instant, a gold Geneva Watch, ' T. C. Miller' scratched on case inside, a short double gold Chain with hook. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Benson, Newmarket, Cambs.— Bow- street, May 5. Stolen from the person of a gentleman on the 22nd inst., a gold Watch, maker Arnold, No. 1688. A reward of £ 5 will be paid by the Superintendent of Police, Thetford, Nor- folk, on the recovery of the watch, and conviction of the BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Further information respecting the man who is charged with breaking into several saddle- rooms, churches, & c., in South Staffordshire and at Clent, Worcestershire, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 5th instant : property stolen a few weeks ago from saddle- rooms at Flour Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, and at Stoughton Grange, Leicestershire, has been traced to his possession by the Staffordshire Police. On the night of the 26th ultimo he broke into Great Barr Hall and Great Barr Church, but only stole a poker ; on the night of the 27th he entered Little Aston Hall, the residence of the Hon. Mr. Jervis, and stole therein a rough dark blue cloth Overcoat, lined with alpaca, and nearly new ; a short shooting Jacket, of mixed colour ; a small gold Seal, set with blood- stone, and with a gold Ring attached ; a silver Pencilcase of octagon shape ; a small Penknife, with two blades, much worn, with dark brown bone handle ; and a wooden Pipe, with bone mouthpiece ; he broke into the stable and coach house at the same time ; on the night of the 2Sth, he broke into the saddle- room at Canwell Hall, and stole £ 16. He is said to be well acquainted with Chatham, has stated his age to be 28 years, is 5 feet or 3 inches high, inclined to be stout, dark brown hair, dark eyes, and had, when last seen, a rather thick beard, two or three inches long, on and under the chin ; usually wears a brown velvet cap, with a tassel, the sides of the cap being made to turn down over the ears. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Adams, Chief Constable's Office, Stafford, who has photographs of this man.— Bow- street, May 9. Stolen, by means of breaking into the shop of Mr. John Edwards, on the night of Cth instant, the following property : a rough dark grey Overcoat, large bore buttons, side pockets and railway ticket ditto with flaps ; three coloured silk pocket Handkerchiefs; four Scarfs, various ; four shirt Fronts, white and coloured ; two felt Hats ; a wool flannel Shirt, grey with white stripe ; a pair of Boots, a brown silk Umbrella, and two sets shirt Studs. Information to be given at the County Police Office, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, May 9. Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from Park- road, Ted- dington : a gold repeater Watch, very old- fashioned, leather cover, with small holes on back cf outer case ; a small silver gilt Candlestick, with embossed stand in shape of a leaf; a gold Pencilcase ; a gold Vinaigrette ; a gilt square carriage Clock, maker Detonie, Rathbone- place, London; a small mosaic Snuff- box, inlaid with gold ; three small silver miniature Frames; and a crimson cloth Tablecover, with embroidered border of gold and amber.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, May 7. Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from Riverdale, Twickenham, by means of burglary : a Necklace of amethysts, oval stones, set clear in geld mounting ; a Cross of amethyst to match ; two Bracelets to match, stones about { r- inch by ;- inch ; a pearl Brooch, in shape of a bow, with tassels formed of small pearls ; a plain flat gold Bracelet; a plain gold ditto, with pearls arranged in shape of a cross ; a Bracelet, flexible, smooth surface, round pattern, pendant Locket with Persian onyx attached ; a turquoise Ornament in form of a bow, gold setting, with turquoise and brilliants ; a turquoise Ornament, with small gold chaiu attached, stones arranged in form of forget- me- nots, with small gold chains ; a cameo Brooch ; a small Bracelet of flexible gold, set with turquoise iu the head, aud locket in shape of a heart pendant from mouth ; aud a Necklace of Venetian shells, with tassels.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, May 2. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found at Gronnant, near Prestatyn, Flintshire, on the 2nd instant, aud supposed to have been stolen : a light grey horse Pony, about 13 hands high, aged, in good condition, rough coat, and shod. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Hughes, Holywell, or to Inspector McLaren, Rhyl, Flintshire.— Bow- street, may 9. Stoleu during the night of the 25th ultimo, from a stable in Tiverton, a valuable hunting Mare ( since recovered, with a Saddle and two Bi idles, one about half worn, ' Wilkinson and Kid' is stamped on the stirrup irons), which are supposed to have been stolen from some other place. A man of the following description is suspected : about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark brown hair, fair complexion, no whiskers, thin face, large feet, turns his toes out when walking, and has tender feet; dressed in a dark blue or light grey cloth coat, grey and black or black trousers, and elastic- side boots. Stolen between 8 p. m. the 29th, and 6 a. m. on the 30th ultimo, from a field at Wood Green : a che.- tnut cart Horse, 15i hands high, 8 years old, star on forehead, white hind fetlocks, switch tail, and in good condition. £ m reward. — Metropolitan Police, Y Division, May 7. Stolen between 6 p. m. 29th and 5 a. m. on the 30th ult, from a field at Alperton : a dark brown cart Horse, aged,' 15 hands, white star cn forehead, sand crack in off fore foot] and much swollen, and nearly blind in one eye.— Metropolitan Police, X Division, May 7. Further particulars respecting ALFRED NAYLOR, charged with horse stealing at Toddington, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 10th ultimo, the Horse, Bridle, and Saddle, have teen recovered, but Naylor is still at large, and is supposed to be iu London j he goes by the name of DAVID. Information to be given to Superintendent Sh ipherd, Police Office, Woburn, Beds, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 7. Found at Hartley Park, near Alton, HanU, on the 10th ultimo, and supposed to have been stolen : a very light grey mare Pony, about 12 hands high, rather hollow back, long tail, in very good condition, has no shoes on, and appears to have been forest bred. Information to be given to Super- intendent Cheyney, Hants Constabulary Station, Alton. Bmo- street, May 5. Stolen from a field at Bidderscote near, Tamworth, on the 27th ultimo, the property of Mi. John Lea Jennings : a half bred light bay Horse, aged, about 15 hands high," both knees slightly cut, small lump on off knee, collar marl.- on off shoulder and on breast, hair singed off back of one ear, and in low condition. Stolen on the night of the 29th ultimo, from a field at Tottenham, the property of Mr. Alderman Sidney, 41, Lud- : gate- hill : a chestnut- coloured cart Horse, 15i hands high, 8 years old, star ou forehead, white hind fetlocks, switch tail, in good condition. £ 20 reward will be paid on the apprehen- sion and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Sergeant Float, Smithfield, City.— Bow- street, May 5. Description of JOSEPH WOODSFORD, charged with stealing Lambs : 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, sandy hair, and small sandy whiskers. Most likely will be found in one of the counties adjoining to Somerset, acting as a shepherd ; has a very bad impediment in his speech, and is a native of Millborne Port, Somersetshire. Iuformation to be given to Superintendent Sheppard, Police Office, Wincanton, Somerset, who holds a warrant for his arrest, and who will pay all reasonable expenses attending his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 5. Stolen from a field at Tamworth, during the night of the 29th ultimo, the property of J. L. Jennings, Esq. : a light bay half- bred Horse, 15 hands high, aged, both knees slightly cut, collar mark on off shoulder, and in low condition. In- formation to be given to Inspector Woollaston, Police Station, Tamworth, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 5. Stoleu between 8 p. m. on the 16th and G a. m. 17th ult., from a stable at Leyton, a bay cart Horse, 17 hands high, very handsome, hind fetlocks and slip on forehead white, and chafed at sides.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, May 2. Stolen on the night of the 29th ultimo from a field, belonging to Mr. Alderman Sidney, near to Southgate: a chestnut gelding cart Horse, of the pure Suffolk breed, rising 8 years old, about 15j hands high, very strongly built, star on forehead, aud hind fetlocks white. £ 20 reward will be paid on the conviction of the offender or offenders. Informa- tion to be given to the Police, Guildhall, London.— Bow- st., May 2. Description of a man charged with horse stealing at Havyatts- green, Urington, Somerset, on the morning of the 29th ultimo, and who sold it the same morning for £ 20 ( Horse recovered): about 29 years of age, about 5 feet 8 ins. high, slender, light complexion and hair, sandy moustache and whiskers, shaved under chin, blue marks round one of j his eyes, as if from explosion of blasting powder, blue eyes, ' and rather long nose ; dressed in a blue cloth short sac or reefing coat, dark small striped trousers and vest, black broad stripe dowu side of trousers, white shirt, with blue studs, set iu brass or gold, dark brown hard bowler hat, and elastic- side boots, with imitation eyelet- holes in front Information to be given to Superintendent Gillbanks, Police Station, Axbridge, Somerset, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, May 2. Stolen between 8 p. m. on the 22nd and 7 a. m. on the 23rd instant, from a field at Long Ditton : a black brood Mare, 15 hands high, 15 years old, heavy iu foal, one hind foot white, small white ring round one fore fetlock, in good condition, no shoes on hind feet.— Metropolitan Police, V Di- vision, April 30. Description of HENRY OLIVER alias LILLYWHITE, coachman, who absconded from Hove on the 26th instant, charged with stealing a Hors>>, which has since been found at Hove on the same day. He is abcut 30 years of age, 5 feet inches high, very dark brown hair, very heavy dark eyebrows and moustache, curly whiskers, and shows his teetli greatly when talking ; dressed as a stableman when he left. Supposed to have been in service as coachman or groom at 9 POLICE, GAZETTE. May 9 Windsor. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Breach, Town Hall, Hove, near Brighton, who holds a war- rant for his apprehensiou.— Bow- strut, xlpril 30. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen on the 7th ultimo, from Bradford, Yorkshire, the following property: one sable Muff, one white Shetland Scarf, one light coloured silk Dress, trimmed with white aud crimson silk ; one Canton crape Shawl, with deep fringe ; one drab and white striped Shawl, tine texture ; one maize coloured alpaca Dress ; one lavender aud white muslin Dress ; one blue aud white Ditto ; one green and white French mus- lin Ditto ; one black diamoud- tigured silk Ditto ; one blue and white striped Petticoat ; one dark stuff Ditto ; two cotton figured Dresses ; two dozen pairs of ladies Stockings; two flannel Petticoats ; one black silk velvet Jacket ; one white embroidered Petticoat ; one violet- figured stuff dress Piece ; one brown aud gold Ditto; one green Dress ; one slate- coloured woollen embroidered Petticoat; one large white Counterpane ; and one pair of Sheets. By a woman named OLIVE PRICE, about 22 years of age, very good looking, dark piercing eyes, dark hair, rather sallow looking, good figure, and supposed to be wearing some of the stolen pro- perty. She was accompanied by a wool sorter, about 26 yrs. of age, good looking, light hair and moustache ; well dressed. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Bradford, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street. May 9. Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from Royal Avenue, Chelsea : a gold 3^- plate Watch, enamel back, English make, No. € 3835; a small piece of gold Chain ; a gold Locket, enamel back ; a crystal Basket; a gold pencil Case ; and a silver Bear, with Seal attached. By a woman who has absconded, 19 years of age, short, fresh complexion, dark hair and eyes ; dressed iu greeu skirt, brown jacket, trimmed with fur, aud black bonnet.— Metropolitan Police, B Division, May 7. Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from Chepstow- place, Notting- hill: twelve Fish Knives and Forks ; a plated Cruet Stand ; two lady's Jackets, oue sealskin, with brown satin lining, the other black cloth trimmed with black beads ; a black cloth Overcoat, black velvet collar; two brown silk Umbrellas; two pairs of side- spring Boots, one men's, one woman's; a lady's black Hat; a Bonnet, trinur ed with black velvet and pink flowers ; a boy's serge Suit and a Box, 2 feet square ; a Portmanteau ; a gold Locket, with large stone, . set with diamonds ; a quantity of Linen; a large leather Dressing- case, containing an ivory Opera- glass, large size, maker Gogerty, Fleet- street : a small Opera- glass, covered with dark leather ; a plated Kuife, Fork, and Spoon ; a red drab Vest; and a blue watered merino Bag. By a woman, 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, and dark brown hair ; dressed in a dark linsey dress, dark waterproof cloak, black bonnet, and side- spring boots.- Metropolitan Police, X Division, May 7. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Warrington, Lancashire, on the night of the 30th ultimo : a new woollen Shirt, man's size, puce and white plaid; a pair of man's black cloth Trousers and Braces ; a womau's black and white striped linsey Petticoat ; a woman's paisley Shawl, nearly new ; and a red woollen neck Shawl. By a lodger, named ELIZABETH CLARK or SMITH, a native of Oldham, Lancashire, a winder in a cotton factory, 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, combed up in front; dressed in old brown wiusey dress, black aud white plaid shawl, aud brown bonnet; she was accompanied by a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair and whiskers ; dressed in blue slop, corduroy trousers, aud cloth cap. Information to be given to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 7. Stolen from a dwelling- house in the borough of Middles- borough on the 1st instant : a pair of grey mixture striped cloth Trousers ( fly fronts) and Vest ( single- breasted) ; a pair of Bedford cord Trousers, fly fronts, white calico lining ; and a black cloth Shooting Coat, two outside pockets, made plain, all man's size. By a servant girl, named ELLEN DAN- NAHER, about 16 years of age, 4 feet 2 or 3 inches high, sallow complexion, thin face, black hair, kiug's evil marks under chin, aud slender make ; dressed iu an old black cloth jacket, old dirty print dress, and black hat ; a native of the above borough. Information to be i> iven to Chief Constable Saggerson, Borough Police Office, Middlesborough, Yorkshire. — Bono- street, May 5. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Middlesborough on the morning of the 26th instant : one black silk Dress with panier ; one black crape Hat, and about 16s. 4d. in money. By a young woman named MARY ANN BOSWICK, who represented herself to be a dressmaker, about 25 or 26 years of age, fair complexion, and light hair ; dressed iu a brown winsey dress, trimmed with red and black plaid, light drab bonnet with pink flower, and black cloth loose- made jacket, trimmed with black fur. She stated she had resided at Leeds, and was well known iu that district. Information to be given to Chief Coustable Saggerson, Middlesbrough- ou- Tees.— Bow- street, May 5. A warrant is issued at Tuubridge Wells for the appre- hension of EDMUND WICKER, on a charge of embezzle- ment : about 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair com- plexion, blue eyes, dark curly hair, and scar from cut ou left thumb ; dressed, when he left Tuubridge Wells ou the 27th ultimo, in a dark vest aud coat, speckled trouse » s with patch at side, and black tie with gold stripes ; he has been a milk carrier aud grocer's porter. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.— Bow- street, May 2. Description of SAMUEL DIXON, of Drummer- hill, Chadderton, banksman, who absconded on the 23rd ultimo, charged ou a warrant with embezzlement : about 37 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair turning grey, slight whiskers uuder chin and round face, large brown eyes, and leans forward when walking. Infor- mation to be giveu to . Superintendent Brindle, County Police Office, Rochdale, or at the Police Station, Royton, near Old ham, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 2. Further information respecting the man charged with stealing an English lever Watch, and who absconded from Monmouth, on the 9th ultimo, aud was advertised iu the Police Gazette of the 14th ultimo : it has beeu ascertained that he goes by the name of GEORGE BAKER, alias WILSON, that he was sentenced to 4 month's imprisonment, under the Criminal Justice Act, for stealing a Coat at Salisbury, underwent his imprisonment at Devizes Gaol, and his time expired on the 28th March last; he belongs to the Wiltshire Militia, understands rough painting, and has worked as a striker iu smith's shops. Information to be given to Superintendent Wheeldon, Police Office, Monmouth, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, May 2. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Middlesborough, on the morniug of the 26th instant: a black silk Dress, a black velvet Bonnet, and about 16s. 4d. in Money. By a woman, who had lodged iu the house about a mouth, and represented herself to be a dressmaker : 26 years of age, fair complexion, and light hair; dressed in a brown winsey dress, trimmed with black aud red plaid, light drab bonnet with pink flower, and black cloth loose jacket, trimmed with black fur. She said she was well known at Leeds. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, April 30. A man of the following description is charged with robbery at Buxton : about 22 years of age,' 5 feet 4 inches high, no whiskers, hair cut very short, complexion as if sun- burnt, and right hand plastered, having been crushed ; dressed in a light woollen cord vest and trousers, dark coat, blue velvet cap, and white muffler with red border ; he is a labourer, and went by the name of TOM. He left his lodgings on the 28th instant, and stole therefrom : a pair of light Blucher Boots, three eyelet boles ou each side ; a seal- skin Cap ; and 3s., the property of John Phillips, of Fairfield, near Buxton. Information to be given to Superintendent Hudson, Chapel- en- le- Frith, or to Inspector Barson, Buxton, Derbyshire,— Bow- street, April 30. A reward of £ 15 is offered for the apprehension of ROBERT GEORGE EARL, described iu the Police Gazette of the 18th instant, as having absconded from Portsmouth, charged with stealing Lead. Information to be given to Head Constable Barber, Portsmouth.— Bow- street, April 30. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS.
