POLICE Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in refereace to the POLICE GAZETTE may bo made and addressed to MB. O. * » * Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mnst be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may he addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INF 0 RMATI0 NS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. I About 8 a. m. on the 8th inst., the dead body of Joseph Cowling, 2 years old, was found in a small pool of water iu a field in Grange- road, Fountain- road, in the borough of Kingston- upon- Hull, with his face downwards, partly covered with twigs, and nearly naked. Deceased left his home in Hill- street to play about half- past three in the afternoon of | the previous day, and at that time was dressed in a light green frock with dark spots, white pinafore, dark merino skirt, red flannel petticoat, and small grey hat, which were all taken off the child. At au adjourned inquest held at the Town Hall on the 23rd inst., a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers of the child; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice ( not being the actual murderer), who will give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Police Station, Hull, Yorkshire.— liow- street, April 30. On the afternoon of the 13th instant the dead body of a newly- born Female Child was found in an ashpit in Bankfield- road, Huddersfield, with the throat cut and several other marks of extreme violence, and when so found could not have born more than twenty- four hours. The body was wrapped in a small list rug, a piece of au old print dress, and a ' Leeds Mercury' newspaper, dated 1st instant. A reward of .£ 50 will be paid by the Government, to any person who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and that the Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the actual muruerer, who will give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Stolen from the person of William Easton, a navvy, in a public - house at Whitchurch, on the afternoon of the 17th instant : an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, No. 2500, maker Brown, Dover, ' W. Nelmes,' engraved on the inside of case. Information to be given to Superintendent Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol.— Bmc- street, April 25. BURGLAR? AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from Riverdale, Twickenham, by means of burglary : a Necklace of amethysts, oval stones, set clear in geld mounting ; a Cross of amethyst to match ; two Bracelets to match, stones about £- incli by .'- inch ; a pearl Brooch, in shape of a bow, with tassels formed of small pearls ; a plain flat gold Bracelet; a plain gold ditto, with pearls arranged in shape of a cross ; a Bracelet, flexible, smooth surface, round pattern, pendant Locket with Persian onyx attached ; a turquoise Ornament in form of a bow, gold setting, with turquoise and brilliants; a turquoise Ornament, with small gold chain attached, stones arranged iu form of forget- me- nots, with small gold chains ; a cameo Brooch ; a small Bracelet of flexible gold, set with turquoise in the head, and locket in shape of a heart pendant from mouth ; and a Necklace of Venetian shells, with tassels.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, Mag 2. Further information respecting tJie property stolen from the Saddle- room of H. Grazebrook, Esq., Clent ( advertised in the Police Gazette of the 23rd instant) : a portion has been found pawned at Dudley, by a man about 25 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark brown hair, dark eyes, fresh com- plexion, very little whiskers, inclined to be stout, and has the appearance of a groom ; dressed in a brown mixture cloth jacket and vest, and black velvet cap with tassel, the jacket and vest supposed to be part of the stolen property. It is supposed that the man has committed similar offences in Leicestershire and South Staffordshire, as he also pawned at the same time a pair of black cloth trousers, the buttons on which are marked with the maker's name, Leicester, and liued all through. Information to be given to Superintendant Freeman, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.— Boio- st., April 28. coachman, who absconded from Hove on the 26th instant, charged with stealing a Horse, which has since been found at Hove on the same day. He is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6i inches high, very dark brown hair, very heavy dark eyebrows and moustache, curly whiskers, and shows his teeth greatly when talking ; dressed as a stableman when he left. Supposed to have been in service as coachman or groom at Windsor. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Breach, Town Hall, Hove, near Brighton, who holds a war- rant for his apprehension.— Bow- streit, April 30. Stolen between the 17th and 22nd instant, from Ash- down Forest, in the parish of Maresfield, Sussex : nine Welsh Ewes in lamb, marked on the rump with the letter ' P.' in black pitch, which is nearly obliterated, and a red mark on the poll. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Peerless, Uckfield, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, April fib. Stolen between 5- 30 p. m. on the 18th, and 7.30 a- m. on the 19th instant, from a stable in the Seven Sisters- road, Tottenham : a black nag Mare, 15 J hands high, lamp on back, had on a Sackcloth,' Lucas and Brothers,' contractors, thereon. — Metropolitan Polce, N Division, April 25. Absconded from his bail on the 21st instant, charged with horse sharping : JOHN SHICKEY, alias JOE BUL- LOCK, of 20, Aberdeen- place, St. Johns Wood, 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, bald, black whis- kers, blue eyes ; dressed in black frock coat, vest and trousers, high black hat, with mourning band, warrant issued.— Metro- politan Police, E Division, April 25. Stolen on the 17th or 18th instant, from a field in New- road, Dulwich : a bright bay^ Mare, 4 years old, 15 hands high, black legs, scar on near hind leg, no shoes on.— Metro- politan Poiicc, P Division, April 23. Stolen on the 17th instant, from King's- road, Chelsea : a dun Cob, with hog mane, 14 hands high, silver plated Harness, and a Gig, painted black, picked out with red. By a man, 40 years ot age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion ; dressed in grey suit and black hat.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, April 23. FORGERY. Description of JOHN JOSEPH CRUNDEN, late of Ipswich, Suffolk, accountant, who is charged on a warrant with forgery at Colchester, on the 12th instant: he is about 36 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark brown hair, hazel i eyes, fresh complexion, scar on left knee, leg, and thumb, and two scars on right shin bone ; was born at Fulbourne, in the county of Cambridge, and late in the employ of Mr. Peter Bruff, as clerk, at Ipswich. He was convicted at the I assizes at Ipswich, 29th March, 1872, for forgery ; he has a wife residing at Guildford, Surrey. Information to be given to Head Constable Downes, Town Hall, Colchester, Essex, i who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., April 25. EOBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman on the 22nd iust., a gold Watoli, maker Arnold, No. 1688. A reward of £ b will bo paid by the Superintendent of Police, Thetford, Nor- folk, on the recovery of the watch, and conviction of the offender or offenders,- to whom all information may be given. ~~ Ewv- slreet, April 30. Stolen at the steeple- chase held at Bexhill, on the 21st instant, from the person : a large silver hunting Watch ; a leather Portemonnaie, containing 2s.; a leather Purse, con- taining Cs. Cd. ; a black leather Portemonnaie, containing 8sv; a black bather Purse, containing 8s. ; a packet of small Needles ; and a railway return Ticket, for 21st April, 1873, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen between 8 p. m. on the 16th and 6 a. m. 17th ult., from a stable at Leyton, a bay cart Horse, 17 hands high, very handsome, hind fetlocks and slip on forehead white, and chafed at sides.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, Marf 2. Stolen on the night of the 29th ultimo from a field, belonging to Mr. Alderman Sidney, near to Southgate: a chestnut gelding cart Horse, of the pure Suffolk breed, rising 8 years old, about 15| hands high, very strongly built, star ; on forehead, and hind fetlocks white. £' 20 reward will be paid on the conviction of the offender or offenders. Informa- tion to be given to the Police, Guildhall, London.— Bow- st., May 2. Description of a man charged with horse stealing at Havyatts- green, Urington, Somerset, on the morning of the 29th ultimo, and who sold it the same morning for .£ 20 ( Horse recovered): about 29 years of age, about 5 feet 8 ins. high, slender, light complexion and hair, sandy moustache and whiskers, shaved under chin, blue marks round one of his eyes, as if from explosion of blasting powder, blue eyes, and rather long nose ; dressed in a blue cloth short sac or reefing coat, dark small striped trousers and vest, black broad stripe dowu side of trousers, white shirt, with blue studs, set in brass or gold, dark brown hard bowler hat, and elastic- side boots, with imitation eyelet- holes in front. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillbanks, Police Station, Axbridge, Somerset, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, May 2. Stolen during the night of the 30th ultimo, from Lam- berhurst, Kent, a black Cow, the property of Mr. J. Rogers. Information to be given to Superintendent Dance, Police Court, Tonbridge, Kent.— Boio- street, May 2. Stolen from a field at Overtown Farm, Wroughton, during the night of the 28th ultimo : a brown Irish Mare, 3 years old, rather wild, a little white on the face, a quantity of warts on the belly, the property of Mr. W. Baker. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent North, Wilts Consta- bulary, Swindon.— Bow- street, May 2. Stolen between 8 p . m. on the 22nd and 7 a. m. on the 23rd instant, from a field at Long Ditton : a black brood Mare, 15 hands high, 15 years old, heavy iu foal, one hind foot white, small white ring round ouo fore fetlock, in good condition, no shoes on hind feet.— Metropolitan Police, V Di- vision, April 30. Stolen from New Parks, near [ Shipton, on the 25th and 5 a. m. on the 26th instant, the property of Mr. Thomas Law, farmer: a three- year old English Heifer, red and white brindled colour, short horns and legs, due for calving. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Hunter, North Riding Constabulary Oftice, Heworth, York, or to Inspector Ellerby, Easingwold.— Bow- street, April 30. Description of HENRY OLIVER alias LILLYWHITE, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. A warrant is issued at Tunbridge Wells for the appre- hension of EDMUND WICKER, on a charge of embezzle- ment : about 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair com plexion, blue eyes, dark curly hair, and tear from cut on left thumb ; dressed, when he left Tunbridge Wells on the 27th ultimo, in a dark vest and coat, speckled trousers with patch at side, and black tie with gold stripes ; he has been a milk carrier and grocer's porter. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.— Bow- street, May 2. Description of SAMUEL DIXON, of Drummer- hill, Chadderton, banksman, who absconded on the 23rd ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzlement : about 37 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair turning grey, slight whiskers under chin and round face, large brown eyes, and leans forward when walking. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Brindle, County Police Office, Rochdale, or at the Police Station, Royton, near Old- ham, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 2. Further information respecting the man charged with stealing an English lever Watch, and who absconded from Monmouth, on the 9th ultimo, and was advertised in the Police Gazette of the 14th ultimo : it has been ascertained that he goes by the name of GEORGE BAKER, alias WILSON, that he was sentenced to 4 month's imprisonment, under the Criminal Justice Act, for stealing a Coat at Salisbury, underwent his imprisonment at Devizes Gaol, and his time expired on the 28th March last; he belongs to the Wiltshire Militia, understands rough painting, and has worked as a striker in smith's shops. Information to be given to Superintendent Wheeldon, Police Office, Monmouth, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Boic- slreet, May 2. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Middlesborougb, on the morning of the 2Gth instant: a black silk Dress, a black velvet Bonnet, and about 16s. 4d. in Money. By a woman, who had lodged in the house about a month, and represented herself to be a dressmaker : 26 years of age, fair complexion, and light hair; dressed in a brown winsey dress, trimmed with black and red plaid, light drab bonnet with pink flower, and black cloth loose jacket, trimmed with black fur. She said she was well known at Leeds. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, April 30. A man of the following description is charged with robbery at Buxton : about 22 years of age, 1 5 feet 4 inches high, no whiskers, hair cut very short, complexion as if sun- burnt, and right hand plastered, having been crushed ; dressed in a light woollen cord vest and trousers, dark coat, blue velvet cap, and white muffler with red border; he is a labourer, and went by the name of TOM. He left his lodgings on the 28th instant, and stole therefrom : a pair of light Blucher Boots, three eyelet holes on each side ; a seal- skin Cap ; and 3s., the property of John Phillips, of Fairfield, near Buxton. Information to be given to Superintendent Hudson, Chapel- en- le- Frith, or to Inspector Barson, Buxton, Derbyshire, - Bow- street, April 30. A reward of £ 15 is offered for the apprehension of ROBERT GEORGE EARL, described in the Police Gazette 2 POLICE GAZETTE. April 2 of the 18th instant, HB having absconded from Portsmouth, charged with stealing Lead. Information to be given to Head Constable Barber, Portsmouth.— Bmo- street, April 30. Description of BENJAMIN DEVON, a labourer who is charged with stealing on the 4tli instant, at Friesthorpe : a leather clasp Purse, containing one Sovereign, and twelve Shillings iu silver ; and a pair of salmon coloured cord Trou- sers the property of Francis Otter, his master. He is about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light brown hail- no whiskers, pale complexion, a dark spot near one eye ' sore hands, simple looking, and a bad walker : dressed in a round cord jacket, or black cloth coat, black cloth trou- sers, or may be wearing the stolen ones, a close fitting grey cap, and stroDg lace- up boots. Information to be giveuto be given to Superintendent Henson, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., April 28. Absconded from Padbury, on the 24th instant, charged with stealing a Chimney- sweeping Machine, with 14 cane rods with brass ferrules, and a scraper : ISAAC MUNTON, sweep, 41 years of age, looks older, 5 feet high, stout made, dark- grey hair and whiskers, meeting uuder the chin ; fresh complexion ; dressed ill sleeve vest and cord trousers, and black billy hat; a native of Thorpe by Water. Has two brothers, master sweeps, at Gretham, near Oakham, Rutlaud. Information to be given to Inspector Andrews, Maids Morton, Buckingham, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, April 28. A warrant has been issued at Tunbridge Wells, for the apprehension of CHARLES CHRISTOPHER ELLIS, who absconded on the 16th instant, charged with embezzling various sums, amounting to .£ 70, the monies of his master Mr. Samuel Joseph Hitchman, coal merchant, to whom he was clerk : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slight figure, dark hair, slightly grey, hazel eyes, sallow complexion, cheeks fall in by the side of the mouth, has two very promineut upper front teeth, a slight moustache, and little whiskers ; dressed in dark blue cloth coat, with velvet collar, dark vest and trousers, and lace boots ; he was formerly a supervisor in the Inland Revenue Office, at Wad- hurst, Sussex. £ 5 reward will be given for his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Embery, Tun- bridge Wells.— Bow- street, April 25. During the night of 20th instant, a man of the name of JAMES BARR or DARE, absconded from his lodgings at Norham, Northumberland, stealing and taking with him two pairs of double Blankets, one freckled dark cloth Greatcoat, one winsey Gown, trimmed with black velvet up the breast: is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, ginger whiskers, brown hair, and wears a greatcoat, much worn and sunburnt, with black velvet neck, moleskin trousers much worn and patched oil both knees, both legs bent out, left hand all blistered and skinned inside, and supposed to have been foreman in Martin Derccy's Marine Storehouse, Gateshead. Information to be given to Superintendent Marshall, Lowick, Northumberland, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 25. Absconded from Middlesborough on the 9th instant, charged with embezzlement: CHAS. or CHRISTOPHER POWELL, a clerk, 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, browu eyes, large black whiskers round face, large black moustache, broad face, large features, and red scar on right temple ; dressed when last seen iu a black cloth shootiug coat and vest, striped cloth trousers, dark browu cloth overcoat, dark round hat, and lace- v. p boots ; a native of Darlington. A warrant is issued for his arrest. £ 5 reward and all expenses will be paid on his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Mid- dlesborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 25. Absconded from Christchurch Barracks, on the 9th inst., charged with stealing a pair of dark cloth Trousers, a £ 5 Bank of Eugland Note, and £ 6 in Gold: CHARLES KING, an officer's servant and driver in the A Battery, B Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair, small dark whiskers, and sallow complexion ; dressed in dark clothes, overcoat, and black round felt hat. Information to be given at the Police Station, Christchurch, Hants.— Bow- street, April 25. 19th ' iastant: he is about 28 years of * ge, 5 feet C inches lii^ b, dark hair and whiskers, and ruddy complexion ; dressed in a, black frock coat, black waistcoat, black and white striped trousers, and black soft felt hat. information to be given to Superintendent Callaway, Police Station, Aston, near Bir- mingham.— Bow- street, April 25. Description of ROBERT HEMMINGS, who lodged at 39, New- buildings, Coventry, and absconded on the 21st inBtant, charged with fraud by advertising in certain news- papers that he wanted several ladies to copy manuscript ser- mons for supply to the clergy, and could furnish such work weekly on deposit of ten shillings with him as a guarantee for the due performance of such work, thereby obtaiuing from divers persons several sums of money with intent to cheat and defraud. He is about 33 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, thin build, brown hair, slightly bald on forepart of the head, brown whiskers, beard and moustache, is very near- sighted, delicate looking, and of good address; dresses respectably, generally iu black cloth, double- breasted frock coat, mixture trousers, and soft brown coloured round jim- crow hat. He walks with an awkward stooping gait, and has the appearance of a schoolmaster or lecturer. Supposed to be in London, working in conjunction with a woman a similar system of fraud. Information to be given to Chief Constable Norris, Coventry.— Bow- street, April 25. Description of PAUL COLMAEL, alias PERCY, charged with obtaining the sum of £ 15 from Israel Goldman, on the 17th February last, at the borough of Kingston- upon- Hull : he is a German, speaks English fluently, 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slight make, dark moustache, respectably dressed, good musician, and may be engaged as pianist at some place of amusement. £ 2 2s. reward and all reasonable expenses will be paid on his apprehention. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, April 23. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Abconded from Calder Farm Reformatory School, Mir- field, on the 25th ult., HEN. SHARPE or GREEN, a native of Winchester, but lately residing at Sheffield : 17 years of age, 5 feet high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, brown eyes, stout make, mark on bridge of nose and corner of right eye, and squints a little ; dressed in a cord suit, the buttons stamped ' Calder Farm School'; a labourer. A reward of £ 1 will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Mr. Hepple, Governor, Calder Farm Reformatory School, Mirfield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 2 Description of JOHN CLARK, a navvy, and native of Bewcastle, Cumberland, committed for trial at the next North Riding Quarter Sessions at Northallerton, on the 2nd July next, on a charge of larceny : 50 years of age, 5 feet 5i inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes ( blind in right), crooked nose, having been broken, brown hair turning grey, no whiskers, and ' E. D.' and ' J. C.' on right arm; dressed in an old brown cloth jacket, dirty slop underneath, fustian trousers and vest, blue and white striped cotton shirt, black cloth cap, and strong navvy boots; states that he has been employed by a contractor at Newcastle for nine months, and had also worked a short time at West Hartlepool. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., May 2. Description of licence- holder JAS. WATSON, No. 4384, who is subject to police supervision for a period of one year from the 8th ultimo, the day on which he was liberated from Carlisle Gaol, and who has not reported himself, as required by the provisions of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871 : he is 20 years of age, 5 feet 5i inches high, brown hair, has a lump on right of nose, scar on each knee and right elbow ; he was convicted at Carlisle on the 9th April, 1872, for larceny at Penrith, and sentenced to 12 months' hard labour and 1 years' police supervision. He is to be apprehended by any constable prior to the expiration of his term of supei - vision.
