Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in refereace to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BUENABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of tho Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to tho Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. About 8 a. m. on the 8th inst., the dead body of Joseph Cowling, 2 years old, was found in a small pool of water in a field in Grange- road, Fountain- road, in the borough of Kingston- upon- HulI, with his face downwards, partly covered with twigs, and nearly naked. Deceased left his home in Hill- street to play about half- past three in the afternoon of the previous day, and at that time was dressed in a light green frock with dark spots, white pinafore, dark merino skirt, red flannel petticoat, and small grey hat, which were all taken off the child. At an adjourned inquest held at the Town Hall on the 23rd inst., a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who shall give such information aud evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers of the child; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice ( not being the actual murderer), who will give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Police Station, Hull, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 30. On the afternoon of the 13th instant the dead body of a newly- born Female Child was found in an ashpit in Bankfield- road, Huddersfield, with the throat cut and several other marks of extreme violence, and when so found could not have born more than twenty- four hours. The body was wrapped in a small list rug, a piece of an old print dress, and a ' Leeds Mercury' newspaper, dated 1st instant. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by the Government, to any person who shall give such information aud evidence as shall lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and that the Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer, who will give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Description of JOHN JOSEPH CRUNDEN, late of Ipswich, Suffolk, accountant, who is charged on a warrant with forgery at Colchester, on the 12th instant: he is about 36 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, scar on left knee, leg, and thumb, and two scars on right shin bone ; was born at Fulbourne, in the county of Cambridge, and late in the employ of Mr. Peter Bruff, as clerk, at Ipswich. He was convicted at the assizes at Ipswich, 29th March, 1872, for forgery ; he has a wife residing at Guildford, Surrey. Information to be given to Head Constable Downes, Town Hall, Colchester, Essex, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., April 25. from Bexhill to Hastings. Information to be given to Super- intendent Jeffery, Guestling, Hastings, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, April 30. Stolen from the person of William Easton, a navvy, in a public - house at Whitchurch, on the afternoon of the 17th instant : an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, No. 2500, maker Brown, Dover,' W. Nelmes,' engraved on the inside of case. Information to be given to Superintendent Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol.— Bow- street, April 25. Stolen at the Cheltenham Races on the 17th instant : An old- fashioned chased gold lever Watch, French make, medium size, maker Roy, FiL A silver English lever Watch, No. 12645, maker Skar- ratt, Worcester. A gold Watch, scratched inside dome ' 0/- /- No. 772', a gold Albert Chain ( pattern small round links) and Locket ( black enamelled, * In remembrance of' in white letters on one side, plain chased the other) attached. A gold signet Ring, with large heart- shaped white stone, black stone round. Three gold Rings, one set with a blue turquoise, one with a green emerald, and the other with a pearl. A gold Geneva Watch, whitej face, mainspring broken, dent near the spring, with a long gold Chain ( large single link pattern) attached. Information to be given to Superintendent Day, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, April 21. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Further information respecting the property stolen from the Saddle- room of H. Grazebrook, Esq., Clent ( advertised in the Police Gazette of the 23rd instant) : a portion has been found pawned at Dudley, by a man about 25 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark brown hair, dark eyes, fresh com- plexion, very little whiskers, inclined to be stout, and has the appearance of a groom ; dressed in a brown mixture cloth jacket and vest, and black velvet cap with tassel, the jacket and vest supposed to be part of the stolen property. It is supposed that the man has committed similar offence. 3 in Leicestershire and South Staffordshire, as he also pawned at the same time a pair of black cloth trousers, the buttons on which are marked with the maker's name, Leicester, and liued all through. Information to be given to Superintendant Freeman, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.— Bow- st., April 28. Stolen on the 17th or 18th instant, from a field in New- road, Dulwich : a bright bay Mare, 4 years; old, 15 Lands high, black legs, scar on near hind leg, no shoes on.— 1Metro- politan Police, P Division, April 23. Stolen on the 17th instant, from King's- road, Chelsea: a dun Cob, with hog mane, 14 hands high, silver plated Harness, and a Gig, painted black, picked out with red. By a man, 40 years ot age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion ; dressed in grey suit and black hat.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, April 23. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman on the 22nd inst., a gold Watch, maker Arnold, No. 1688. A reward of £ 5 will be paid by the Superintendent of Police, Thetford, Nor- folk, on the recovery of the watch, aud conviction of the offender or offenders, to whom all information may be given. — Bow- street, April 30. Stolen at the steeple- chase held at Bexhill, on the Slst inBtant, from the person : a large silver hunting Watch ; a leather Portemonnaie, containing 2s. j a leather Purse, con- taining 5s. 6d, j a black leather Portemonnaie, containing 6s.: a black leather Purse, containing 8s, I ft packet of small Needles; and a railway return Ticket, tor 21st April, 1873, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen between 8 p. m. on the 22nd and 7 a. m. on the 23rd instant, from a field at Long Ditton : a black brood Mare, 15 hands high, 15 years old, heavy in foal, one hind foot white, small white ring round one fore fetlock, in good condition, no shoes on hind feet.— Metropolitan Police, V Di- vision, April 30. Stolen from New Parks, near [ Shipton, on the 25th and 5 a. m. ou the 26th instant, the property of Mr, Thomas Law, farmer: a three- year old English Heifer, red and white brindled colour, short horns and legs, due for calving. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Hunter, North Riding Constabulary Office, Heworth, York, or to Inspector Ellerby, Easingwold.— Bow- street, April 30. Description of HENRY OLIVER alias LILLYWHITE, coachman, who absconded from Hove on the 26th instant, charged with stealing a Horse, which has since been found at Hove on the same day. He is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8£ inches high, very dark brown hair, very heavy dark eyebrows and moustache, curly whiskers, and shows his teeth freatly when talking ; dressed as a stableman when he left, upposed to have been in service as coachman or groom at Windsor. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Breach, Town Hall, Hove, near Brighton, who holds a war- rant for his apprehension.— Bow- streit, April 30. SAMUEL GUARDHOUSE, who was described in the Police Gazette of the 21st instant, charged with sheep stealing at Mungrisdale, Greystoth, near Penrith, has been appre- hended in the county of Durham. Information to be given to Superintendent Forster, Constabulary Office, Penrith.— — Bow- street, April 28. Stolen between the 17th and 22nd instant, from Ash- down Forest, in the parish of Maresfield, Sussex : nine Welsh Ewes in lamb, marked on the rump with the letter ' P.' in black pitch, which is nearly obliterated, and a red mark on the poll. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Peerless, Uckfield, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, April'^ 25. Stolen between 5' 30 p. m. on the 18th, and 7.30 a. m. on the 19th instant, from a stable in the Seven Sisters- road, Tottenham : a black nag Mare, 15i hands high, lump on back, had on a Sackcloth,' Lucas and Brothers,' contractors, thereon. — Metropolitain Polce, N Division, April 25, Absconded from his bail on the 21st instant, charged with horse sharping : JOHN SHICKEY, alias JOE BUL- LOCK. of 20, Aberdeen- place, St. Johns Wood, 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, bald, black whis- kers, blue eyes ; dressed in black frock coat, vest and trousers, high black hat, with mourning band, warrant issued.— Metro- politan Police, E Division, April 25, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Middlesborough, on the morning of the 26th instant: a black silk Dress, a black velvet Bonnet, and about 16s. 4d. in Money. By a woman, who had lodged in the house about a month, and represented herself to be a dressmaker : 26 years of age, fair complexion, and light hair; dressed in a brown winsey dress, trimmed with black and red plaid, light drab bonnet with pink flower, and black cloth loose jacket, trimmed with black fur. She said she was well known at Leeds. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, April 30. A man of the following description is charged with robbery at Buxton : about 22 years of age,| 5 feet 4 inches high, no whiskers, hair cut very short, complexion as if sun- burnt, and right hand plastered, having been crushed ; dressed in a light woollen cord vest and trousers, dark coat, blue velvet cap, and white muffler with red border ; he is a labourer, and went by the name of TOM. He left his lodgings on the 28th instant, and stole therefrom : a pair of light Blucher Boots, three eyelet holes on each side ; a seal- skin Cap ; and 3s., the property of John Phillips, of Fairfield, near Buxton. Iniformation to be given to Superintendent Hudson, Chapel- en- le- Frith, or to Inspector Barson, Buxton, Derbyshire, - Bow- street, April 30. A reward of £ 15 is offered for the apprehension of ROBERT GEORGE EARL, described in the Police Gazette of the 18th instant, as having absconded from Portsmouth, charged with stealing Lead. Information to be given to Head Constable Barber, Portsmouth.— Bow- street, April 30. Description of BENJAMIN DEVON, a labourer who is charged with stealing on the 4th instant, at Friesthorpe : a leather clasp Purse, containing one Sovereign, and twelve Shillings in silver ; and a pair of salmon coloured cord Trou- sers, the property of Francis Otter, his master. He is about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light brown hair, no whiskers, pale complexion, a dark spot near one eye, sore hands, simple looking, and a bad walker : dressed in a round cord jacket, or black cloth coat, black cloth trou- sers, or may be wearing the stolen ones, a close fitting grey cap, and strong lace- up boots. Information to be given to be given to Superintendent Henson, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., April 28. Absconded from Padbury, on the 24th instant, charged with stealing a Chimney- sweeping Machine, with 14 cane rods with brass ferrules, and a scraper : ISAAC MUNTON, sweep, 41 years of age, looks older, 5 feet high, stout made, dark- grey hair and whiskers, meeting under the chin ; fresh complexion ; dressed in sleeve vest and cord trousers, and black billy hat; a native of Thorpe by Water. Has two brothers, master sweeps, at Gretham, near Oakham, Rutland. Information to be given to Inspector Andrews, Maids Morton, Buckingham, who holds the warrant.— Boic- street, April 28. A warrant has been issued at Tunbridge Wells, for the apprehension of CHARLES CHRISTOPHER ELLIS, who absconded on the 16th instant, charged with embezzling various sums, amounting to £ 70, the monies of his master Mr. Samuel Joseph Hitchman, coal merchant, to whom he was clerk : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slight figure, dark hair, slightly grey, hazel eyes, sallow complexion, cheeks fall in by the side of the mouth, has two very prominent upper front teeth, a slight moustache, and little whiskers ; dressed in dark blue cloth coat, with velvet collar, dark vest and trousers, and lace boots ; he was formerly a supervisor in the Inland Revenue Office, at Wad- hurst, Sussex. £ 5 reward will be given for his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Embery, Tun- bridge Wells.— Bow- street, April 25. During the night of 20th instant, a man of the name of JAMES BARR or DARE, absconded from his lodgings at Norham, Northumberland, stealing and taking with him two pairs of double Blankets, oue freckled dark cloth Greatcoat, one winsey Gown, trimmed with black velvet up the breast: is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, ginger whiskers, brown hair, and wears a greatcoat, much worn and sunburnt, with black velvet neck, moleskin trousers much worn and patched ou both knees, both legs bent out, left hand all blistered and skinned inside, and supposed to have been foreman in Martin Demey's Marine Storehouse, Gateshead. Information to be given to Superintendent Marshall, Lowick, Northumberland, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bo w- street, April 25. Absconded from Middlesborough on the 9th instant, oharged with embezzlement: CHAS. or CHRISTOPHER POWELL, a clerk, 30 years of age, 5 feet D or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, brown eyes, large black whiskers round i 2 POLICE GAZETTE. April 20 face, large black moustache, broad face, large features, aiul red scar on right temple ; dressed when last seen in a black cloth shooting coat and vest, striped cloth trousers, dark brown cloth overcoat, dark round hat, and lace- v. p boots ; a native of Darlington. A warrant is issued for his arrest. £ 5 reward and all expenses will be paid on his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Mid- dlesborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 25. Absconded from Cluistchurch Barracks, on the 9th inst., charged with stealing a pair of dark cloth Trousers, a £ o Bank of England Note, and £ 6 in Gold: CHARLES KING, an officer's servant and driver in the A Battery, 11 Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery, about 2< S years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair, small dark whiskers, and sallow complexion ; dressed in dark clothes, overcoat, and bla, ck round felt hat. Information to be given at the Police Station, Christchurch, Hants.— Bow- street, April 25. Description of CHARLES ARTHUR NICHOLLS, charged with stealing at Egham, on the 11th instant, a £ 20 Bank of England Note ( recovered) : about 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, no beard or whiskers, slight moustache, rather thin, good look- ing, of very respectable appearauce, rather round shouldered, and rolls his head from side to side when walking. Infor- mation to be £ iven to Superintendent Bnngard, Surrey Constabulary, Chertsey, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, April 23. Absconded on the 17th instant, from Twickenham, charged with stealing three pieces of black Silk, measuring respectively 35 yards, 40 yards, and 60 yards : a man, 36 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, thin, sallow complexion, dark eyes, black hair and whiskers, hollow cheeks, slightly deaf, and speaks low ; dressed in black suit and high hat; is of respectable appearance and good address. — Metropolitan I'Uiee, T Division, April 23. Description of JOHN PURKIS, charged with stealing at Bagshot, on the 14th instant, a pair of Boots : about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair, cut short, no whiskers, freckled face, and is a barber ; dressed in an old dark brown overcoat, no vest, old soft billycock hat, and dark brown trousers. Information to be given to Super- intendent Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, Chertsey, who holds a waraant for his apprehension. - Bow- street, April 23. next, quarter sessions, to be holden for the city of Worcester, charged with having obtained money by means of a false pretence : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 0 inchcs high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, small moustache, tuft of hair on chin, cupping marks on right side ; has been a journeyman photographer, and states ho las been employed to photograph prisoners in Milbank Convict Prison. Description of three men in custody at Sittingbourne, charged with stealing a Coat atNewington, on the 23rd inst., and remauded until the 10th proximo : THOMAS HILLS, carman, Aldgate street, City of Loir- doi), 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 inohes high, fresh complexion, light brawn hair cut very short, and blue eyes ; dressed iu a brown cloth overcoat with velvet collar, blue gtiernaC^, white cotton shirt, white neckerchief, new cord trousers, soft felt hat, cJd lace- up bqots ; tattoo marks on . left arm and ring pu. Second finger of left hand, and also a scar froni a boil on chest. HENRY BARNES, labourer, of Lever- street, St. Luke's, London, 16 years of age, 6 feet 2\ inches high, fresh com- plexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, and scars on arms, body, and legs ; dressed in a black cloth coat, two dark vests, brown triped trousers, black scarf, bUck hard felt hat, and old side- spring boots. JOHN PRESTON, labourer, of Lever- street, St. Luke's, London, 16 years of age, 5 feet 4\ inches high, fresh com- plexion, hazel eyes ( cast in loft), dark brown hair, scar from burn on right arm, and scars from blisters on left shoulder ; i ressed in a black ribbed jacket, dark mixture vest, white scarf with red spots, dark striped trousers, hard high felt hat, and old blucher boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Mayna, Police Court, Sittingbourne, Kent.— Bow- street, April 30. Description of a man who obtained a sum of money from a lady at Aston, near Birmingham, by false pretences, on the 19th instant: he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, and ruddy complexion ; dressed iu a black frock coat, black waistcoat, black and white striped trousers, and black soft felt hat. Information to be given to crown at the side ; and a pair of elastic- side Boots, with fancy toe caps, and bright buckles iu front. Information to be given to Superintendent Prest, Guisborough, or to Sergeant Swinburne, Lofthouse, North Riding Constabulary, York- shire.— Bow- street, April 28. Description of WILLIAM ROACH, alias WILLIAM DEVINE, an Irishman, who is committed for trial at the ensuing Knutsford Sessions, on the charge of stealing Cash Superintendent Gallaway, Police Station, Aston, near Bir- and Jewellery at Marton, on the 27th ultimo, of which a handsome gold Pin, horse shoe pattern, set with turquoise studs, has not been recovered : he is 35 years of age, 5 ft. 9 ins. high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, very slight beard on chin; dressed in black. Has kept public- houses iu Manchester, been a gentleman's butler, waiter at hotels, and manager of spirit vaults. He is about 33 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, thin build, brown hair, slightly bald on forepart of the head, brown whiskers, beard and moustache, is very near- sighted, delicate looking, and of good address; dresses respectably, generally in black cloth, double- breasted frock coat, mixture trousers, and soft brown coloured round jim- crow hat. He walks with an awkward stooping gait, and has the appearance of a schoolmaster or lecturer. Supposed to be in London, working in conjunction with a woman a similar system of fraud. Informatiou to be given to Chief Constable Norris, Coventry.— Bow- street, April 2a.
