Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BUKNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, Ziondon, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necesBary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well aa those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. At 3 a. m. on the 18th instant, Police Constable George Grey, of the Northumberland Constabulary, was passing along the highway west of Eglingham Village, he met three men, who jumped over the fence into a field, and the officer followed them; two of the men turned round, and each pointed a gun at him, one of them fired, and wounded the officer in the bod)', from which wounds he died the same day. One of the men is about 5 feet 11 inches high ; the man who fired the gun is about 5 feet 8 inches high, wore a grey coat and moleskin trousers ; and the third a Ehorter man. Her Majesty's Government offer a reward of £ 100 to any person who shall give such information and evidence, as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Right Hon. the Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to Superintendent Stephenson, Hexham, Northumber- land, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 7. Stolen between 11p. m. the 5th, and 7' 30 a. m. on the 6th instant, from the house of Mr. Roger Moyston, Redhili : twelve white- handle table Knives; twelve white handle small Knives : three white handle carving Knives and Forks ; eight dessert Knives and Forks ; three poultry Knives and Forks ; a bread Knife ; a plated Tea- pot; a plated cream Jug ; a silver cream jug ; a silver Cup; nine tea Cloths, marked ' C. M., 12— 72 ;' eight glass Cloths, marked ' C. M.;' two Dusters ; two table Cloths, marked ' C. M. ;' seven table Napkins, marked ' C. M. 12 ;' four side- board Cloths; two knife Cloths ; 2 lbs. of fresh Butter ; some Bread and cold Meat; two pairs of Scissors ; and Bome Bacon and Eggs. Information to be given to Head Constable Rogers, Police Station, Redhill, Surrey.— Bow- street, February 7. Further information respecting the men who committed the burglary at Uffington, on the 26th ultimo, see Police Gazette of the 27th ultimo, the one with the red beard, hair, and moustache is supposed to have come from Wolverhamp- ton- street, Dudley, and is called RED ROVER, formerly hawked cloth, and is 37 years of age ; the other is about 24 or 25 years of age. They are well known in Birmingham, Worcester, Gloucester, and Wiltshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Reece, Faringdon, Berks.— Bow- st., February 5. During the night of the 27th ultimo, Clutton Rectory, the residence of the Rev. T. B. Johnstone, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen : a black clotli Between the 8th and 22nd instant, a homed wether Sheep, the pi operty of Mr. Charles Pratt, of Beech Farm, Old Windsor, was slaughtered in a plantation, and the carcase carried off, the head and skin being left behind. £ 5 reward will be paid by Mr. Pratt to any person giving information that will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Mr. Pratt, Sunninghill, or to Inspector Man sell, Clewer, Berks.— Bow- street, January 29. Stolen from a field at Nuneaton, daring the night of the 22nd instant, the property of Mr. Charles Jee : a fine bay half- bred Gelding, 5 years old, 16 hands higb, locg mane and tail, black fetlocks, unshod, in good condition, has a very small white star on forehead, and dark fetlocks ; it is supposed to have been stolen at 7 p. m., and has been traced as far as Atherstone. A reward of £ 15 will be paid upon conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Austin, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, January 29. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from his lodgings 47, Shepherd- street, Crewe, on the 4th instant, charged with stealing a blue pilot cloth monkey Jacket, black bone buttons, pocket on each hip, right pocket lined with leather; a dark cloth Jacket, cross pocket, dark bone buttons ; a single breasted Waistcoat, made of the same material, bone buttons ; a pair of light mixture cloth Trousers, fly fronts, and metal buttons ; a light plaid woollen Shirt, lined with white flannel, and pearl buttons on it; a satin purple Scarf, and a gold Pin knot pattern : HENRY double- breasted Overcoat, nearly new; two red and white J a native of B^ m^ gb ne^ B. kenhead, FORGERY. Description of ARTHUR HASLAM, late of Henley- on- Thames, Oxon, charged with uttering a forged Cheque at the Bank of Messrs. Simonds and Co., at Henley- on- Thames : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet C inches high, fair com- plexion, scar acruss forehead, light brown hair, sandy whiskers, and of gentlemanly appearance ; has been to Australia and America, and is supposed to have left London on Tuesday the 21st or Wednesday the 22nd ultimo, for Bris- bane. Any person who shall give such information as will lead to the apprehension of the said Arthur Haslam shall receive £ 20 reward from Messrs. Simonds and Co. Stolen from the Barracks Gate, Fulford, York, on or about the 31st January, 1873, a plain Saddle, ( since recovered) and two drab woollen Horse Rug-, marked with ' E. W.' sewn on. By a mau of the following description, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, blue eyes, light brown hair, ginger whiskers round the chin, laughing face, fresh com- plexion, a scar on nose, and one on cheek, and ia supposed to have been a pugilist ; dressed when last seen in an old- fashioned black shooting coat with pockets outside, black vest, dirty white cord trousers, top boots, cut off at the ankle, rounded up at knee, which he wears as leggings, and a tall hat, narrow brim, runs wider at top of hat. Information to be given to Inspector Gibson, East Riding Constabulary, Escrick, or to Sergeant Burniston, Barrack- road, York.— — Bow- street, February 7. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 3rd instant, the dwelling- house of Mrs. Bangham, of North- lane, Canterbury, was entered, and six silver Tea- spoons marked ' B.' two of them very much worn, stolen therein. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Davies, City Police Office, Canterbury. — Bow- street, February 7. During the night of the 21st ultimo, the dwelling- house of Mr. Frederick Ayton, of the Old Brewery, Hexham, was burglariously broken into, and the following property stolen therein : a meerschaum Pipe, a pair of lace- up Boots, large size, have very square toes, and are made of rough leather ; and three boxes of Cigars ; part of the stolen property has since been recovered. A mau named JAMES GREER, alias DAVID BRANNAN, is charged with the above offence, and is of the following description : 36 years of age, 5 feet inches high, stout make, fresh complexion, sandy hair, blue eyes,' B. C.' defaced on right side, ' D.' defaced on left side, cut mark on right cheek, and on forehead ; supposed to be wearing the stolen boots ; was born in Irelaud, but has been many years in England ; is well known in the counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, Northumberland, Durham, and Yorkshire, has occasionally been employed as a cattle drover, as well as a butcher's assistant, is of drunken habits, and boasts very much of his ability as a fighter. He was liberated from Northallerton G& ol on the 8th of January. 1873, he had undergone a sentence of 9 month's imprison- ment for felony, and is now subject to 2 years' supervision of the Police. He was also sentenced to 3 months for felony, at Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol. — Bow- street, February 5. Between 11 p. m. on the 27th and 5 " 30 a. m. on the 28th ultimo, the dwelling- house of William Holt Gardiner, of Grinstead, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : a leather Purse, containing 10s. 9d.; a pair of dark cord Trousers ; a grey cloth Vest. Also the house of James Piggott, labourer, of Stanford Rivers, was broken and entered between 9 p. m. and 6 a. m. on the 28th, and the following property stolen : a pair of man's strong nailed Boots : and about 4i lbs. of salt Pork. By a mau of the following description : about 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion and hair, cut very short, no whiskers; dressed in a brown overcoat, black trousers, blue cheese- cutter cap, and a pair of lace- up balmoral boots, newly fronted and half new in soles, which are now in the possession of the police : he took a railway ticket from Epping to Ongar, on the night of the 26th ult., by the 10 33 train. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Simpson, Epping, or to Inspector Robinson, Police Station, Chipping Ongar, Essex.— Bow- street, February 3. At 2 p. m. on the 27th instant, the cottage of Joseph Croft, labourer, of Rhosgoch, on the Long Mountain, near Welshpool, was broken into, and stolen therein : £ 5 in Gold ; two Florins; a copper 2d. Piece ; a brown velvet Jacket, much worn ; a dark cloth W; aistcoat, having square green spots in it, nearly new ; a pair of cotton cord Trousers, lately washed, each knee patched ; a pair of grey woollen Stockings ; and a black jimcrow Hat. By a tramp, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, little or no whiskers ; dressed in the stolen clothes ; he left behind in the cottage an old blue pilot cloth monkey jacket, lined with blue and black woollen plaid, and an old white jimcrow hat, turning up at the sides, with tape to it to wear, under'the chin. Information to be given to Superintendent Strefford, Welshpool, Montgomery- shire.— Bow- street, January 29. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen about the 20th ultimo, from a field at Brownhills, a bay horse Pony, 4 years old, 13 hands high, white star on forehead, a little white on one or both hind feet, rough coat, and in good condition. A reward of £ 2 will be paid for its recovery, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Hill, Walsall, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, February 3. Further information respecting the Mare stolen from Gwastod- garth, Breconshire, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 29th ultimo : the mare has been recovered sold to a dealer at Bodenham, Herefordshire, by WM. THOMAS MORGAN, a native of Farrington, Radnorshire, states he is a native of Hednesford, Staffordshire, which is false, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, pale complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers round chin, hazel eyes, long visage, large nose, inclined to left side, scar on top of head, which he states he received by falling from a horse ; dressed in a dark brown coat and waistcoat, duck slop under coat, cord trousers, lace- up boots, hard brown bowler narrow- brimmed hat; smart military appearance, states he has been in the Army, and was wounded in one of hi? legs, is likely to seek employment as a wood- cutter, and was traced to Leominster, on the 28th ultimo. Information to be given to Superintendent Evans, Breconshire Constabulary, Crickhowell, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 3. Absconded from the boroitgh of Ipswich, on the 3rd inst., charged with stealing £ 2 10s. in Gold, 17s. in Silver and Copper Money ; a silver Geneva Watch, with ' Jane Crowe' scratched on inside case, and a silver Guard; also a suit of black cloth Clothes, the property of Jane Johnson: WILLM. CROWE, about 18 years of age, fresh complexion, and light hair; dressed when last seen in grey trousers with black stripe down sides, black cloth vest, grey tweed coat, hairy cap, and side- spring boots ; has an aunt living with Mrs. Lording, No. 1, The Acacias, West- end, Hammersmith, as domestic'servant. Information to be given to Head Constable Mason, Police Office, Town Hall, Ipswich, who holds a war- rant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 7. Description of GEORGE ROBINSON, charged on a warrant with embezzling, in July last, the sum of £\. Is., the money of his master, Mr. Robert Potts, music seller, Brighton : 14 years of age, very fair, fresh complexion, light hair, blue eyes, tall for his age, supposed to have gone sea. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton. — Bow- street, February 7. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Waterloo, Lancashire, on the 28th January : a gold Hoop, with ' Richard Booth, Jamaica, No. 1802,' engraved inside, and has a diamond in with ' S. M.' engraved under it. By a man who lodged at the house, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, black hair, and has lost the left arm ; an engineer by trade. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Ludam, Constabulary Office, Wilshaw, near Ashton- under- Lyne, Lancashire.— Bow- street, February 7. Stolen from a house at Gorton, on 3rd instant, the following ' property: one man's black cloth walking Coat, double breasted, three black buttons on each cuff, two pocket and a small ticket pocket outside, one pocket inside left breast, and black velvet collar; one ditto double breasted Vest, dark quilted ground with blue and gold flowers, two pockets outside and trimmed with black braid ; one ditto blue cloth walking Coat, two pockets and small ticket pocket outside, one inside left breast, two black cloth buttons on each cuff, maker's name on loop behind—' Nilson, Openshaw;' also a man's blue cloth Vest of same material. By a man who took lodgings at the house, and was allowed to go up stairs to wash himself. He left in about an hour and has not been heard of since. He is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair, eyes, and complexion, lost all his upper front teeth except one, squints, wears two rings, one with stone ; dressed in dark overcoat and trousers, dark 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E . Stolen from a lodging- house at Bridgnorth on the morniD" of the 3rd instant: a new short round white linen Jacket 7 a woollen cord Vest; a woollen plaid Scarf; a yellow fur or hair Cap ; a Pocket- knife ; a Half- sovereign ; and Us. in Silver ; the property of Frank Hawley and William Thomas. By an Irish tramp, about 21 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, cut short, no beard or whiskers, full pale face, supposed to be kuowu iu Wolver- hampton by the name of JOHN or MICHAEL GANLEY, he tramps about the country, sometimes as a rag gatherer, aud at others as a drover; dressed iu the btoleu cap, daik blue pilot jacket, torn under left arm, grey trousers, potched on each knee, aud blucher boots, with large nails in the toes. Stolen between 2 and 3 p. m. oil the 2Sth instant, from the Railway Station, at Braith. vaite, the property of Richard Clapham, station master : a £ b Bank of England Note ( since recovered). By JAMES SKEET and MARY WARDROP • who are remanded to the Keswick Lock- up until the 8th inst., charged with stealing the same : Skeet is from 20 to 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, short dark whiskers, aud slender figure ; dressed in black coat and trousers, seat torn, black cap° new boots, with buttons on front, and a belt round his waist ; he is a deserter from H. M. 47th Regt. of Foot now stationed at Fleetwood, and from where he deserted on the 23rd December last; Wardrop is a prostitute, and belongs to Caldewgate, Carlisle, 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, short nose, thick lips, dark hair, and pro- portionate tigure ; dressed in a black hat, with red or pink flower, black and red woollen shawl, grey or brown striped dress, and new boots. When at Keswick, they lodged in a common lodging- house. Absconded from Wisbech, on the 3rd instant, charged • with felony : THOMAS SMITH, a carpenter, native of Whittlesea, Isle of Ely, 33 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, of sickly appearance, light brown hair, sandy whiskers and moustache, clean shaven on chin and throat; dressed in dark clothes, with dark cap, fittiug tight to the head, has a small pimple ou the right cheek, and rather weak eyes, carried a flag basket, aud accompanied by a young woman whom he calls his wife. Mitchell, boot manufacturer : WILLIAM ROBERTS, alias ROSE, a convict on licence, Register No. 8301, a jative of Gloucestershire, 30 years of age, 5 f? et 4 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, which may be shaved oil', cut mark ou left wrist, fouith finger of left hand crooked, lias lost an upper front tooth, a shoemaker by trade, but has worked as a labourer in iron works ; has a friend keeping a public- house in Pimlico, where he spent last Christmas. He was sentenced to 4 years' peDal servitude at Bedford on the 7th April, 18C2, aud 7 years' penal servitude at Mon- mouth, on 27th March, 1860, for burglary. Information to whiskers; dressed in a dark brown overcoat, brown velvet collar, black velvet waistcoat, dark trousers, black alpine hat, aud blucher boots ; the woinau is about 19 years of age, 5 feet high, and very much pockmarked ; dressed in a dark brown jacket and dress, black hat with white feather in frout, aud rings on each hand. Information to be given to Superintendent Woollaston, Police Office, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 3. Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from a bedroom at Ringmer Villa, Eastbourne, Sussex : a black watermarked Petticoat, a woman's light Dress, aud a dark leather Purse, containing 2s. 3d. iu Money. By a servant girl, about 14 years of age, about 5 feet high, dark complexion, hair, and eyes, propor- tionate figure ; dressed iu white steaw Dolly Varden hat, trimmed with blue ribbon, light liusey dress with small flounces, aud black cloth jacket or waterproof skirt aud jacket to match. Information to be given to Superintendent Wag- horn. Hailshom, or to the Sergeant on duty, Police Station, Eastbourne, Sussex.— Bow- street, February 3. Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from the Oaks Collery, Barnsley, Yorkshire: a silver lever Watch, nearly new, engine- turned case, white dial and ulaclc numerals, gold pointers aud seconds, has No. 0481!) scratched on case, also 2>> 0 ou the inside case, and had a long silver Guard Chain attached, snake pattern. By a collier, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, no « hiskers, stout build, lost front teeth, and scars on tinkers of both hands. Gave his name as RICHARD ENTWISTLE, supposed to come from Accrington, Lancashire, and is believed to be a returned convict. Information to be given to Super- intendent Sykes, Barnsley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, Feb. 3. Description of a woman charged at Ashton- uuder- Lyne, with stealing Blankets and Wearing Apparel ( part of which has been recovered) from a public- house at Ashtou- under- Lyne, on the evening of the 28th ultimo, where she had been employed as servant : about 50 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, slender made, dark complexion, thick lips, dark brown hair, turning grey, lias injured her left wrist recently, which is much swollen ; dressed iu a black dress, black shawl and bonnet ; sometimes stops at common lodging- houses. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable Dalgliesh, Ashton- under- Lyne, Lancashire.— Boo- street, February 3. Description of JOHN LANK, name supposed to be fictitious, charged with stealing ou the 25th instant, from his lodgings at Swadlincote, £' 2b in Gold and Silver, the property of William Fearu : he is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stout built, black curly hair, cut short, no whiskers, coarse face, thick lips, dark complexion, rough voice, aud has FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of a man calling himself Captain H. B HAMILTON, of the 6th Dragoon Guards, who is charged with obtaining board and lodgings under false pretences: 30 or 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fair com- plexion, stout build, light curly hair parted down the centre, no whiskers, largo light moustache, and small prominent teeth ; dressed in a greenish- grey mixture suit or black ditto, black silk hat or low- crowned felt ditto, dark blue overcoat with velvet collar aud silk facings, and square- toed spring- side boots; wears a gold signet ring aud gold watch and chain, carries a dark varnished walking stick with ornamented head, generally wears bright yellow gloves, is of gentlemanly appearance, and had in possession a brown paper parcel ; his liuen is marked ' Brown.' Information to lie given to Head Constable Turrall, Borough Police Office, Cambridge, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bw. o- street, Jan. 31. as a mechauic, but often travels with shooting galleries, ginger- bread stalls, aud boxing- booths to fairs aud races, and is kuown as LANK JACK. Information to be given to Superintendent Carline, Police Office, Woodville, near Burton- on- Trent, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, January 31. Absconded from Weymouth, on the 27th iustant, charged with larceny as a bailee: JEAN MARIA ANDERSON, alias TRUTCH, alias TRACEY, alias TREVELLIAN, alias the Hon. Mrs. H. H. TREHERNE, alias TRENCH, TULLOCK, & c.
