Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from tho Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Absconded on the 10th instant, from the parish of New- church East, iu the county of Monmouth, charged under a warrant ( with two others committed for trial at the next quarter sessions to be holden at Usk, on the 19th March) with unlawfully aud maliciously wounding and inflicting grievous bodily harm upon one William Dixon, on the night of the 8th instant: JOHN LANE, a travelling tinker, he has a pedlar's certificate signed by the Chief Constable of Monmouthshire, iu January latt, he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, proportionate figure, light brown hair and whiskers. He is accompanied by his wife, who is rather tall, aud of fair complexion. He has with him two light coloured mare Donkeys, a new light spring Cart, with yellow body and brown wheels, patent axletree, and brass caps. Supposed a native of Kington, Herefordshire, but has lived at Newchurch East for the hist 16 months. Infor- mation to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Aber- gavenny ; to Captain Beethan, Constabulary Office, Usk ; or to Inspector Ward, Chepstow, Monmouth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 28. At 3 a. m. on the 18th instant, Police Constable George Grey, of the Northumberland Constabulary, was passing along the highway west of Eglingham Village, he met three men, who jumped over the fence into a field, aud the officer followed them j two of the men turned round, and each pointed a gun at him, one of them fired, and wounded the officer in the body, from which wounds he died the same day. One of the men is about 5 feet 11 inches high ; the mau who fired the gun is about 5 feet 8 inches high, wore a grey coat and moleskin trousers ; and the third a shorter man. Her Majesty's Government offer a reward of £ 150, aud the Court of Quarter Sessions for the county of Northumberland offer a like sum, making the full and final reward of £ 300, to be paid to any person who shall give such information and evidence, as shall lead to the apprehension aud conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the right Hon. the Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Northumberland, Hexham, or to any Superintendent in the county of Northumberland. — Bow- street, February 14. A gold hunting Watch, a gold Albert, plain, maker Mason. Canterbury. A gold Geneva hunting Watch, open white face, No. 4423, glass cracked in form of a V in centre. A silver lever, maker Thomson, Ashford. Information to be given to Superintendent Davies, Canterbury, Kent.— Bow- street, February 24. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in the parish of Melton Mowbray, on the night of the 18th instant : a silver Geneva Watch, No. 7561. Information to be given to Super- intendent Platts, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.— Boui- st., February 21. Stolen from the person of a gentleman whilst at the great Waterloo coursing meeting at Altcar on the 19th inst. : a gold lever Watch, with white dial and centre seconds, maker's name Penlington, Liverpool, No. 606 ; had attached a gold albert Chain, cable pattern, gold Seal and Whistle, ' J. S.,' and crest— a bird aud martlet— engraved on the seal. Information to be given at the Constabulary Office, Ormskirk, Lancaster.— Bow- street, February 21. Stolen from the person on the race- course at " Worcester, on the 14th and 15th instant: a double- cased silver Watch, ' Walter Chamberlain, 1868 ' scratched ou the inside of the case ; also a full- sized English lever Watch, engine- turned case, much worn, second hand missing, No. 5112, with steel Chain and Key attached; and a silver Geneva Watch, No. 55475. Stolen during the night of the 20th instant, from a field at Stapleford Abbotts, the property of Mr. Philip Taylor, farmer : a red roan Horse, about 15 hands high, aged, long rough coat, scar on near side of neck, frequently has the gripes. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, or to Inspector Robinson, Police Station, Chipping Ongar, Essex.— Bow- street, February 24. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. At 7 p. m. on the 15th instant a hay Btack belonging to Thomas Bridgewater, blacksmith, in a field near the town of Montgomery, was found to be on fire, and between four and five tons of Hay were thereby consumed. It is supposed to be the act of an incendiary. Information to be given to Chief Constable Danily, or to Police Constable Thomas, Montgomery.— Bow- street, February 17. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of William Mayes, at Wood- bridge, on the night of the 24th instant: a silver pair- case Watch, medium size, Roman figures, marked ' Hildyard, Woodbridge, No. 6068,' with a silver Albert and Key. By a man about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair and complexion, very few whiskers, beetle brow'd, old dark clothes, old round hat, boots with the toes out; states he has been in the navy. Information to be given to the Police at Woodbridge, Suffolk.— Bow- street, February 28. The following Watches were stolen from persons on the Race Course, Canterbury, on the 21st instant; A silver pair- cased Watch, BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 20th instant, the office of Mr. William Elworthy's brewery, iu Kettering, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : 1 £ 20 Bank of England Note, No. W | 19 97759. 1 £ 10 ditto, H | 73 44666. 2 £ 5 Notes. About £ 14 in Silver. £ 7 in Gold. A Cheque of Horn aud Co., drawn on the Kettering Branch of the Leicestershire Banking Company, for £ 8 3s., payable to Wm. Elworthy, dated Feb. 17th, 1873. About 12s. in Copper. About £ 3 in new Farthings. 10s. worth of Postage and some Receipt Stamps. A japanned Cash- box. 2 old green cotton Flags. A silver lever hunting Watch, No. 71594. Any person giving such information as will lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 20 reward. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Stoker, Police Office, Kettering, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, February 24. On the night of the 19th or early on the morning of the 20th instant, the Roman Catholic Chapel at Wooton Wawen, near Henley- in Arden, in the county of Warwick, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : two small silver Cruets aud Stand ; a silver Chalice and Cover, Latin inscription oii^ bottom of chalice ' Ecclesia SS Maria et Benedicti, Wootton Wawen, A. D., 1871 ;' a small silver Box and Stand ; and a plated Drinking Cup Cover. Information to be given to Inspector Harris, henley- in- Arden, Warwick- shire.— Bow- street, February 24. Between the 9th aud 13th instant, the church at Brails- ford, was broken into, aud the following property stolen : a Collection Plate, copper, well gilt over ; a square piece of crimson Cloth, bordered with gold fringe two inches long. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Lawson, Constabulary Office, Litchurch, Derbyshire. — Bow- street, February 19. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from Bury Green, on the 19th instant : eight Lamb Hogs, of the long wool breed ; and a half- bred Ewe, which is heavy with lamb. Information to be given to Acting Superintendent Hamilton, Ramsey, Hunts.— Bow- street, February 28. Stolen on the night of the 21st instaut, from Fryerning, the property of Mr. Foreman : a dark chesuut cart Mare, 8 years old, 13i hands high, thick head, short thick neck, long tail aud mane. Supposed by two men of the following description : one 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark moustache and beard ; dressed in brown coat, dark trousers, and wide- awake hat; the other about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark mous- tache and whiskers ; dressed in a dark coat, wide- awake hat, and long boots, worn outside trousers, and looked like a foreigner. These men are going about the country repre- senting they have a commission to buy horses for the Spanish army. Information to be given to Superintendent Dobson, Springfield, Chelmsford, Essex.— Bow- street, February 26. Stolen on the night of the 17th instant, from Jodrell Hall Park, Twemlow, Cheshire, the property of Egerton Leigh, Esq. : a Shropshire Ewe Lamb, pitch marked on the sides with a horse- shoe. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehen- LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded between 10 a. m. the 21st, and 10 a. m. on the 22nd instant, charged with stealing £ 15 : a man, 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, blotched face, dark brown hair ; dressed in Oxford mixture overcoat, dark trousers, and black felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, February 28. Absconded from Exeter, charged with embezzlement: RICHARD COOK, late a carter in the employ of the Bristol and Exeter Railway Company : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, rather stout; dressed in a monkey jacket, moleskin trousers and vest, and wide- awake hat. Information to be given to Head Constable Steel, Guildhall, Exeter, Devon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 28. Stolen from the house of ANDREW HAGAN, Gew- land- street, South Shields, on the 25th instant: a sailor's | Bag, containing the following articles of wearing apparel ; a ' large- sized grey top Coat; a new dark tweed Coat; a blue slack Coat; four pairs of white duck Trousers t, pairs of , tweed Trousers ; a light grey Vest; a blue Vest, with brass buttons ; eleven woollen Shirts, of various colonrs, marked ' J. F.;' five pairs of white Drawers, marked ' J. F.;' seven pairs of Stockings, marked ' J. F.;' a pair of elastic- side Boots, with buttons up the front. By a man of the following description, who took lodgings at the above house, and absconded on the following morning : 21 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fair complexion, light moustache, had the appearance of a seaman, and speaks the Yorkshire dialect. Information to be given to Chief Constable Richardson, South Shields.— Bow- street, February 28. Absconded from Shrewsbury, on the 21st inst., charged on a warrant with embezzling Money of his employer Mr. T. L. D. Jones, auctioneer : FRANK ONIONS, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair aud whiskers, very slight impediment in his speech ; dressed iu a suit of black clothes, light overcoat, billycock hat, aud elastic- side boots. £ 10 reward will be paid by Mr. T. L. D. Jones, to any person giving such infor- mation as shall lead to his apprehension. Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, Shrewsbury.— Bow- street, February 28. Absconded from Dorstone, Hertfordshire, on the 29th ultimo, charged with stealing Oats and oat Chaff: WILLIAM JONES, alias BILL OF WINDSOR, a shoe- maker, and native of Dorstone, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, daik hair, pale face, generally shaves all bis whiskers off'; he left his wife at Dorstone, has a relative living in Bristol, supposed to be keeping a shop, another at Salisbury, Wilts, another at Tredegar, and another at Aber- gavenny, keeping a public- house, he is supposed to have gone to one of these places. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Shead, Weobley, or to Sergeant Baynham, Consta- bulary Station, Whitney, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 28. Description of MARTIN, for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued, charging him with stealing at Ullesthorpe, Leicestershire, on the 21st ultimo : a quantity of Potatoes : he is 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, proportionately made, light hair and complexion, no whiskers or moustache, has tattoo marks on left hand, in a ring the letters ' U. W. C. T. T.,' alse on same hand the word ' Martin,' other tattoo marks are on his left hand, arm, and chest ; is of good address, and respectable appearauce ; dressed in black cloth coat and trousers, white vest, and cap with a tassel; he stated that he was a native of Nottingham, and had been in the army. Information to be giveu to Superin- tendent Rowlett, Lutteworth, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, February 28. Description of HENRY LAWS, alias MORLEY, who absconded on the 23rd instant from St. Leonards, charged on a warrant with obtaining a quantity of Meat by false and fraudulent pretences, the property of his master, Mr. Albert Parks : about 45 yeais of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, propor- tionate make, rather dark complexion, dark hair and whiskers, shaved on chin ; had on when he left, a brown overcoat and high hat, but generally dresses as a butcher; had with him a small carpet- bag and a sea chest with rope handles ; has been employed as a butcher ( his trade) on board 3hip; he left by the 6 50 a. m. train the same day for Brighton, and is a native of Bornemouth, Hants. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Town Hall, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, February 28. Stolen on the 25th instant, from the house of George Marshall, The Balk- road, Bedford : a silver Geneva Watch No. 30779— 23882, enamel dial, with gilt flowers round tho February 28 edge. By a man, about 24 years of age, 6 feet 10 iuclies high ; dressed in black coat avid trousers, and deerstalker hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, February 28. Description of KATE HARRISON, charged at Skipton with stealing, from a dwelling- house at Silsden, certain articles of female Dres3 ( recovered), on the 3i. ith ultimo, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued : ahout ^ 4 years of age, about 4 feet 10 inches high, brown hair, medium build, a native of Ireland, a tramp, and has no fixed residence; dressed in old grey . shawl, green and white plaid dress, and clog!) ; she is reported to be well known at Man- chester, Liverpool, Rochdale, Bishop Auckland, and othei northern towns. She was accompanied by a girl, about 7 years of ajje, and by a man, named James Harrison, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 10 Inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, and is a gat maker by trade ; dressed in old black cloth coat, linen jacket, white moleskin vest, nearly new, cotton cord trousers, ami navvy boots, much worn. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Sykes, West Riding Constabulary, Skipton.-— Bow- street, February 20. Stolen from the dwelling- house of John Holly, Ratewell lane, Calne, Wilts, on the 19th instant : a double- eased silvej- Watch, a cross on the back of cases, the dial has been broken near the figure ' 6' and a small piece of white plaster put on, and a small diamond on \ ergo, had attached a lady's albert hair Guard, with Key the shape of a bugle, with white stone. By THOMAS HOLLY, a labourer, who has absconded : 49 years of age, fi feet 9 inches high, and walks badly, his right leg turning inwiuds; dressed in an old round white slop, cord trousers, black round hat, and is of dirty appearance' He will most'likely pawn the watch, or cell it at a public- house. Description of GEORGE ROSE; oliargei on a warrant with stealing, on the 21st instant, a Cash- box, containing about £ 70, consisting of 5 £ 5 Bank of England Notes, some with the stamp of the London and County Bank on them, and the remainder in Gold and Silver ; the property and money of David Jenkins, his master : he is about IB years of age, about 5 feet 8| inches high, dark complexion, very low forehead, dark beard and moustache, face covered with red pimples ; dressed in dark overcoat, and high black hat; is of gentlemanly appearance and address, and a native of Stroud, Gloucestershire. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton. Sussex.— Bow- street, February 24, Description of CHARLES TERTIUS HILL, who is charged with having stolen, ou the 14th instant, the sum of £ 199, the monies of his father, Tertius Hill: he is about 17 years of age, 5 feet high, slender build, dark brown liair, dressed when last seen iu dark ragged coat, black and white striped trousers, red and white mixture double- breasted vest, and black cloth cap with peak. It is supposed he has left for Liverpool. Information to be given to Chief Constable Glossop, Birmingham, who holds the warrant for his arrest. — Bow- street, February 24. Stolen from a dwelling- house in the borough of Oldham, on the 18th instant: £ 145 iu Gold, and a pair of grey and black striped cloth. Trousers. By a man who obtained lodgings on the 15th instant, and absconded on the ISth: about 27 yeans of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, pale complexion, dark/ hair and eyes, squints with one eye, nanus upper front teeth with the exception of one ; lie is of respectable appear- ance, and stated he was a clerk in the service of the Railway Company. He was convicted in the name cf WILLIAM. JOHNSON, at Reading Sessions, iu 1869, and sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment. £ 10 reward will be paid on his apprehension, aud apportioned in accordance with the amount of money recovered. Information to be given to the Chief Const'abje, Town Hall, Oldham, Lancashire. — Bow- street, February 24. Description of THOMAS REEVES, who is charged with embezzling the sum of 10s., the monies of William Nutting, umbrella manufacturer, No. 137, Digbeth, Birming- ham, his master : he is about 19 years of age, about 6 feet 8 inches high, pale complexion, thin make, clean face, dark liair ; is likely to seek employment in large towns as omni- bus conductor. Information to be given to Chief Superin- tendent Glossop, Birmingham, Warwickshiie, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 24. Description of HENRY R. WOODFORD, clerk and advertisement canvasser, for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued, ou a charge of embezzlement : 28 years of age, but does not look more than 23, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, brown hair, curly, and parted iu the middle, no whiskers or moustache, and fair round face ; dressed in a dark grey mixture suit and round black felt hat, and is of smart appear- ance. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, February 24. Stolen from the Castla Inn, Burton- on- Treut, on the 17th instant: au Anglo- Cerman Concertina, iu mahogany case. By a man named HENRY JONES, alias WOOD- WARD, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slightly built, light hair and complexion, no beard ; dressed in a grey mixture monkey jacket, double- breasted vest of same material, black aud white plaid trousers, black billycock hat, aud low- shoes with red laces ; goes about public- houses playing a concertina, and singing, is well known in South Staffordshire, Kidderminster, Stourbridge, and Worcester ; supposed to be a native of Oxford or Cambridge. Information to be given to Superiatendent Oswell, Burton- on- Trent, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- s/ teet, February 24. Description of THOMAS HOWELL, who is charged with stealing four Eels, the property of Robert Dexter, his master : ho is about 32 years of age, D feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, thick lips, full face, stout make, is a pork butcher by trade. Information to bo given to Chief Super- intendent Glossop, Police Office, Detective Department, Bir- mingham, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, february 24. Absconded on the 14th instant, from Skinningrove, charged with stealing £ 2 10.->. ; two Purses; a silver verge hunting Watch, with steel Chain and Key attached ; a double- breasted moleskin Jacket, with two pockets in right ^" de. Que iu J(| t s. ida, two inside pockets, white bone button^ and lined with check horse sheeting ; and a scarlet an^ t) laek woollen Shirt, much faded : a youth, a lodger, 16 or 18 yearB of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, slender buiir}, light com- plexion, long light hair, his ears have been recently pierced, and have small gold wires iu them ; supposed to be dressed in dark pilot jacket with broad braid, and harden jacket underneath, moleskin vest aud trousers, Scotch cap, white muffler, and low lace- up boots ; is a native of the south of England. Description of a man charged with stealing, from Taunton, ou the lltli instant, a silver Watch, which he pawned the same day at Bridgwater : about 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, small black moustache, no whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, brown bowler hat, and mauve neck tie; he stays at hotels or private lodgings, pretending that he is a clerk iu a bank in the towu, that he has just arrived, aud expects his luggage by train next day ; lie veiuaius a day and night, or more, and leaves without paying his bill. He arrived in Worcester on the 13th instant, and remained until the 17th, then left, giving up as security tlie ticket of the stolen watch. Bovi- eireel, fltbpuary 21 Description of a iaan charged on a warrant with em bezzling £ 50, belonging to his employers: WILLIAM JOBLING, a commercial traveller, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slender make, dark complexion, rather long heard, whiskers, and moustache, has a peculiar look about the eyes, of smart, gentlemanly appearance, and a great boaster when iu company ; he is a native of Silsden, near Leeds, aud is well known iu most of the towns in Yorkshire and Lancashire. He left Manchester on the 8th instant, for Leeds, in company with a young woman, who had on a seal- skin jaoket. £ 5 reward will be paid by his late employer for information that will lead to his apprehension and conviction, and recovery of the money, or iu proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given at the Detective Office, Chespside, Manchester.— Bow- street, February 21. Description of a man charged on a warrant with stealing, on the 17th instant, £ 1,229 19s. Id., the monies of his employers : JOHN HAMER BARON, a solicitor's clerk, 20 years of age, 5 feet high, no whiskers, slight moustache, rather bow- legged, pale- looking, dark complexion ; respectably dressed. The stolen money consisted of two £ 500 Bank of England Notes, dated Manchester, January 30th, 1871, Z/ 6 77348 and 9 ; two £ 100 ditto, dated Manchester, January 13th, 1872, Y/ 25 07746 and 7; and Gold and Silver. £ 50 reward will be paid by Messrs.
