W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AID MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. At 3 a. ni. on the 18th instant, Police Constable George Grey, of the Northumberland Constabulary, was passing along the highway west of Eglingham Village, he met three nieu, who jumped over the fence into a field, and the officer followed them ; two of the men turned round, and each pointed a gun at him, one of them fired, and wouDded the officer in the body, from which wounds he died the same day. One of the men is about 5 feet 11 inches high ; the man who fired the gun is about 5 feet 8 inches high, wore a grey coat and moleskiu triusers ; and the third a shorter man. Her Majesty's Government offer a reward of .£ 150, and the Court of Quarter Sessions for the county of Northumberland offer a like sum, making the full and final reward of £ 300, to be paid to any person who shall give such information and evidence, as shall lead to the apprehension aud conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Right Hon. the Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evideuce as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Northumberland, Hexham, or to aDy Superintendent iu the county of Northumberland. — Bow- street, February 14. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. At 7 p. m. ou the 15th instant a hay stack belonging to Thomas Bridgewater, blacksmith, in a field near the town of Montgomery, was found to be on fire, and between four and five tons of Hay were thereby consumed. It is supposed to be the act of an incendiary. Information to be given to Chief Constable Danily, or to Police Constable Thomas, Montgomery.— Sow- street, February 17. At 9' 30 p. m. on the 7th instaut, a large stack of straw was discovered to be ou fire, on the premises of Mr. F. Evans, Cae Hen, Llandysilio, which was completely destroyed; supposed to be the act of incendiary. Information to be given to Police Constable Breeze, Llandysilio, or to Deputy Chief Constable Strefford, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.— — Bonn- street, February 10. FORGERY. Description of SAMUEL JOSEPH PHILLIPSON, charged with forgery at Manchester : he is about 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark beard and moustache, shaves at the sides, dark sallow complexion, stout made, rather bald on the forehead, slightly liowlfgged, and of respectable appearance. £ 50 reward will be paid by Messrs. Sutton and Elliot, Solicitors, Brown- street, Manchester, to any person giving such information as will lead to his arrest. Informa- tion to be given at the Detective Office, Cheapside, Manches- ter.— Dow- street, February 10. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman iu the parish of Melton Mowbray, on the night of the 18th instant : a silver Geneva Watch, No. 7561. Information to be given to Super- intendent Platts, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.— Bow- st., February 21. Stolen from the person of a gentleman whilst at the great Waterloo coursiug meeting at Altcar on the 19th instant : a gold lever Watch, with white dial and centre seconds, maker's name, Pennington, Liverpool; had attached a gold albert Chain, cable [ pattern, gold Seal and Whistle, ' J. S.,' and crest— a bird aud martlet— engraved on the I seal. Information to be given at the Constabulary Office, Ormskirk, Lancaster.— Bow- street, February 21. Stolen from the person on the race- course at Worcester, on the 14th and 15th instant : a double- cased silver Watch, ' Walter Chamberlain, 1868' scratched on the inside of the case ; also a full- sized English lever Watch, engine- turned case, much worn, second hand missing, No. 5112, with steel Cbaiu aud Key attached; and a silver Geneva Watch, No. 55475. Stolen from the person of Patrick Cooney, in the borough of Middlesborough, on the evening of the 10th instant: a patent lever Watch, maker Isaac Altson, Middlesborougb, No. 23024. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Borough Police Station, Middlesborough.— Bow- street, February 12. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between the 9th aud 13th instant, the church at Brails- ford, was broken' into, and the following property stolen : a Collection Plate, copper, well gilt over; a square piece of crimson Cloth, bordered with gold fringe two inches long. Absconded from Tunbridge Wells, ou the 15th ultimo, charged on a warrant with burglary : HENRY CHEESE- MAN, about 16 years of age, 5 feet high, brown hair and eyes, fair complexion, and much pockpitted ; dressed when he absconded iu au old black coat, white slop under, cord trousers, and an old cloth cap without peak. Stolen from a stable and coach house at Royton, on the 30th ultimo-- a dark bay Horse ( three parts blood), 4 years old, 16 hands high, black legs, white star on forehead, short rough mane, rather hollow back, long square cut tail, has the hair off over the eyes, and been recently shod, the shoes hare the name ' W. Ireland ' upon the outer edge ; a 4- wheeled Stanhope Phaeton, to carry four persons, self colour, nearly new, maker ' Livsley, Manchester' upon the cap of each wheel ; and a Riding Saddle, without stirrups, maker Geld- thorp, Royton. £ 10 reward shall be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Superintendent Little, Constabulary Office, Whitehaven, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, February 10. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Four ewe Sheep of the following description were found on the Rhea Farm, Bromyard, about the first week in December last, which it is supposed, had been stolen from some distance : three of them have white faces, the other smutty faced, all marked across the shoulders with red ruddle, oni has had maggots on the near shoulder, and the wool is shorter there. Supposed to be all in lamb, and about 2 years old. Information to be given to Superintendent Harwood, Bromyard, Hereford.— Bow- street, February 14. Further information respecting the half- bred Gelding stolen during the night of the 22nd ultimo, from a field near Nuneaton : the horse has been traced to Atherstone, through Bentley Wood, as far as the Coleshill and Birmingham Road ; it was being ridden by a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sandy whiskers ; dressed in oilskin cape and light- coloured leggings. A reward of £ 50 will be paid about the eyes, of smart, gentlenanly appearance, and a great boaster when in company ; he is a native of Silsden, near Leeds, and is well known iu most of the towns in Yorkshire and Lancashire. He left Manchester on the 8th instant, for Leeds, in company with a young woman, who had on a seal- skin jacket. £ 5 reward will be paid by his late employer for information that will lead to his apprehension and conviction, and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given at the Detective Office, Chespside, Manchester.— Bon- street, February 21. Description of a man charged on a warrant with stealing, on the 17th instant, £ 1,229 19s. Id., the monies of bis employers : JOHN HAMER BARON, a solicitor's clerk, 20 years of age, 5 feet high, no whiskers, slight moustache, rather bow- legged, pale- looking, dark complexion ; respectably dressed. The stolen money consisted of two £ 500 Bank of England Notes, dated Manchester, January 30th, 1871, Z/ 6 77348 and 9 ; two £ 100 ditto, dated Manchester, January 13th, 1872, Y/ 25 07746 and 7; and Gold and Silver. £ 50 reward will be paid by Messrs. Marriott and Woodhall, solicitors, 12, Norfolk- street, Manchester, for such information as will lead to his apprehension and conviction, and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given at the Detective Office, Cheapside Manchester.— Bmo- street, February 21. 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. February 21 Lownds, Police Office, Litchurch, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, February 10. Absconded from Portsmouth, charged with stealing 2200 Francs : a man who gave the name of Capt. LENNOX, and who is believed to be the person advertised in the Police Gazette of the 7th instant, under tbe head of ' Frauds and Aggravated Misdemeanours,' in the name of Captain H. B. HAMILTON, of the 6th Dragoon Guards, charged at Cam- bridge with fraud ; his description corresponds exactly with the above- mentioned. " He left Portsmouth by the 4 p. m. train on the 7th instant, supposed for either Southampton or Bristol. Information to be given to Head Constable Barber, Portsmouth.— Bow- street, Feb ruary 10. Stolen from the house of Charles Capper, at Tunstall, Staffordshire, on the 14th ultimo : Two Shillings in money, one Knife, and one Pencil. By a man named WILLIAM- SON, who had lodged in the house one night : about 50 years of age, G feet high, moderate build, walks very erect, grey hair and wliiskers, aud long face ; dressed in black felt hat, short grey round jacket, coarse cloth, brown cotton cord trousers, darned with white on of^ e knee : bljicher bpqta with square toes, woollen plaid shirt, black necktie with white spots down th « centre, and is of respectable appearance. Information to be given to Superintendent Baker, Tunstall, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street,' February 10. Stolen at Chesterfield, during the evening of the 7th instant: a £ 5 Note ; a silver hunting- case verge Watch ; a paisley Shawl ; and a blue stuff Dress. By a man about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light browu hair, light complexion, a bricklayer by trade ; he is accompanied by a woman about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 iuches high, light hair and complexion, has a round substance growing out of left side of head between the eye and ear. Information to be given to Chief Constable Home, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, February 10. The under- named female is charged at Linlithgow with fraudulently uttering as genuine several spurious Rings to different persona iu the above town and Borrowstounness, ou the 26th August last: CATHERINE or ELIZABETH STEVENSON, or STEWART, or CHURCH, a hawker, occasionally travels with money auctioneers, 29 years of age, 5 feet 3J inches high, round face, sallow complexion, black hair, short nose, full cheeks, hazel eyes ( one darker than the other), dark eyebrows, stout make, weighs 10 stone, rough features, and mole mark on left side of neck ; dressed iu a black lace bonnet with red flowers, grey gown trimmed with mauve velvet, mauve striped petticoat with tucks, white white flannel ditto with three tucks, mauve crinoline, white stockings, and broad- toed boots. She was in custody at Alloa some time ago upon a similar charge, and afterwards liberated upon bail. She then stated she was the wife of one William Stewart, a mason, belonging to Edinburgh, had been in search of her husband, and gave her address as Mrs. Stewart, care of Mr. Roe, barber, Stockwell- street, Glasgow, but cannot be found at that address. Shortly after her liberation she was ascertained to be the woman charged here, Mil her photograph has since been identified as being that of Mrs. Church. A sheriff's warrant has been granted for her re- apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Colquhoun, Linlithgow.— Bow- street, February 17. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of JOSEPH RALPH SMITH, who has been missing from his home at Portsmouth since the 16th instant : about 15 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair, blue eyes, fair complexion ; dressed in blue witney reefing jacket, with velvet collar, black vest, dark grey trousers, and Scotch cap with boar's head ornament. It is feared some ill has befallen him. Information to be given to Head Constable Barber, Police Station, Landport, Ports- mouth.— Bow- street, February 21. Description of FRANCES CHURCHLEY, charged on a warrant with stealing a Registered Letter, the property of the postmaster- general, at Dudley he is about 20 years of age, looks younger. 4 feet 8 to l6 inched high, dark brown hiirflMRPw complexion, rather prominent nose, no whiskers, very slight moustache, front teeth slightly projects ; dressed in black slouched billycock hat, and brown overcoat. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Burton, Police Office, Dudley, Worcester.— Biae- street, February 21. Absconded from his lodgings, the Railway Tavern, Newnham Bridge, near Tenbury, on the 4th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing a drab Overcoat, a tweed Jacket, a pair of sidespring Boots, a Cigar Holder and Case, three silk Pocket- handkerchiefs, a linen Shirt Front, three plated Studs, aud a silk Necktie : CHARLES COOK, alias THOS. HILL, alias WILLIAM GRIFFIN, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, dark hair cut short, no whiskers or moustache, has a cut mark on one leg ; dressed in mixture tiveed jacket, dark vest, dark cloth trousers, navvy boots with plates on toes, aud soft billycock hat; is a native of Bedfordshire, and has a grandfather living at Dunstable ; left a reformatory about two years ago, and went to the baking; is well known at Bedford, . i'l reward will be paid on his apprehension and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Superintendent Raby, Great Witley, or to Sergeant Turner, Tenbury, Worcester- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 21. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Whatton- in- the- Vale, Notts, on the 13th instant : a pair of dark checked cloth Trousers aud Vest; and a pair of gold Ear- ring?. By a man who took lodgings, and remained only one night: about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair, eyes, and complexion with beard and moustache, his upper front teeth appear to have been broken off; dressed in a short pilot jacket, dark corduroy trousers, and an imitation seal- skin cap ; he pretended to be a platelayer, working on the Great Northern Railway in the neighbourhood. Information to be given to Superintendent Fisher, County Police Station, Bingham, Notts.— Bow- street, February 19. Absconded on the 14th instant, charged with embezzle- ment: THOMAS STEPHENSON BARRON, about 18 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair, pale looking, thin features, no whiskers or moustache; dressed either in a black cloth suit or a dark mixture suit, and hard billycock hat ; has a gentlemanly appearance. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leeds,— Bow- street, February 19. Absconded on the 12th instant, from No. 535, Oxford- street, charged with stealing £ 250 in Notes and Gold, the monies of their master : a man, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, hair, whiskers, beard and moustache, blue eyes; dressed in a black walking coat, light trousers and vest, black cloth cap ; and a youth, 17 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, dark eyes ; dressed in a dark suit and high black Metropoli- tan Police, E Division, February 17. Stolen from the Virgins & Castle public- house, Kenil- worth, on the morning of the 14th instant: a black and white mixture tweed Coat and Vest, coat since recovered. By a man who lodged there the previous night : about 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, rather full face, very little whiskers ; dressed in a brown coat, bed- ford cord trousers, and cap with peak ; had the appearance of a labourer. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Jervis, Warwickshire Constabulary, Kenilworth. — Bow- street, February 17. Description of DAVID WILLIAMS, of the parish of Oswestry, Salop, charged with larceny : about 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair and whiskers round his face, fair complexion, dark eyes, and prominent teeth ; he is supposed to have gone to Liverpool, and has Worked in coal mines, and also as a stoker. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 14. Description of EDWARD JONES, of Gobowen, Salop, charged with larceny : about 48 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, rather stout, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, very little whiskers, which are turning grey, and one of his eyes is nearly covered with the eyelid ; he is a labourer, and is sup- posed to have gone to Birkenhead or its neighbourhood. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 14. The following is a description of JOHN DICKSON, charged at Berwick- on- Tweed, on a warrant with stealing a Watch by violence, on the road near Berwick- on- Tweed, late on the night of the 10th instant : he is a native of Berwick- on- Tweed, 23 years of age, 6 feet high, slender made, fair complexion, rather long thin face, light brown hair, small reddish whiskers round chin, he is both a moulder and a mason, but does not work much, is a Militiaman, and walks erect. The watch is a silver lever, No. 44344, white dial, with small crack aoross face, sunk seconds hands, ordinary chapters, and had a piece of alluminium Chain attached. Information to be given to Superintendent Garden, Town Hall, Berwick- on- Tweed.— Bow- streit, February 14. Charged with embezzlement: WRIGHTSON ROBERT BRYANT, No. 7, Sellwood- place, Bromptou, 60 to 65 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, grey hair, sharp thin features, very hollow cheeks, long thin nose, small grizzly whiskers, nearly clean shaved, and has a slight limp when walking ; dresses respectably.
