Notice.— It is requested that all communications for tho purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that on Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. The dwelling- house of Mr. George Wilson, of Preston Gate, Aldbourn, was entered between 1 and 7 a- m. on the 27th ultimo, and the following property stolen therein : a silver Table Spoon and Dessert Spoon, marked ' B. G. W.' ; a briar- root Pipe ; 6d. in Coppers; 3 lbs. of Cheese ; and 2 lbs. of cooked Beef. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretton, Wilts Constabulary, Marlborough. — Bow- street, November 1. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 6 and 11 pita, on the 2nd instant, the dwelling- house of John Dunn, situate at Moore- laoe, in the parish of Kingswinford, Staffordshire, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : about 14s. in Silver, and a gold albert Chain with Locket attached, which has an engraved horse- shoe, on one side, aud a spaniel dog on the other. Information to be given to Superintendent Mills, Brierly Hill, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, November 8. Description of PATRICK CALLIGHAN, alias * PLUCK,' a puddler, charged with highway robbery at Tees Tilery, near Middlesbrough, ou the 2nd instant. He is 27 or 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair and moustache, shaves his whiskers off, stout figure ; dressed when he left Tees Tilery in black cloth cap with covered peak, black cloth coat and vest, dark grey cloth trousers, large muffler, and lace- up boots. He is well known among puddlcrs, has worked at Darlington, Witton Park, and J arrow. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, North Riding Constabulary, South Stockton, or to Inspector Robson, Police Office, North Ormesbury, near Middlesbrough.— Bow- street, November 8. Absconded from Towcester, charged with highway robbery : JOSEPH LOVEBIDGE, a gipsey tinker, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, pale complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, no whiskers ; dressed in a double- breasted cord waistcoat, with fustian back and sleeves, large pearl buttons, cotton cord trousers, fitting tight round the legs, strong boots, and cap, the lower eyelid at the corner of right eye has been injured, and causes it to have a peculiar appearance; he is supposed to be a deserter from the War- wick Militia, has a brother living at Neithrop, near Banbury, and other relations living in the borough of Warwick, one of which places he is expected to have gone. Information to be given to Superintendent Osborn, Towcester, Northampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, November 8. On the night of the 3rd instant, the North Eastern Railway Company's goods warehouse, at Haswell Station, was broken and entered, and three parcels containing the follow- ing articles stolen therein : two pieces of black and red striped Woollen Shirting, 51 yards in each piece ; 12 pairs of lads strong nailed Boots, heelplated, sizes 11 aud 12 ; 2 dozen of lady's brown Spanish Hose ; 2 dozen white cotton ditto ; 6 Scotch lambswool Shirts, man's size ; 6 pairs of Scotch lambs wool Drawers ; 6 pairs of Shetland wool drab Drawers ; and 1 dozen woollen Scarfs, of various colours Information to be given to Superintendent Scott, County Constabulary Office, Castle- Eden, Durham— Bow- street, November 6. During the night of the 1 st instant, Highnam Vicarage, near Gloucester, was broken into aud entered by removing the cellar grating, and cutting a hole with a centre- bit in the door leading from the cellar to the hall, sufficiently large to insert the hand and unlock it; the dining- room was entered, sideboard and oak cabinet broken open, and the following articles stolen : a silver oblong Sugar Basin, holding about a pint, embossed with a lion's crest; a silver Cruet Stand for four bottles, crest— a griffin's head ; two silver Caddy Shells, and a small silver Castor Spoon, crest on each— a griffin's head. Two young men of the following description were seen in the neighbourhood on the day preceding the robbery, asking questions about ladies' and geutlemen's, and whether wealthy or otherwise, and are suspected : One about 21 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, thin make, respectable appearance, and has an impediment in his speech ; dressed in a low fashionable hat, dark clothes, gold or gilt chain across vest, and was carrying a small dark umbrella. The other from 20 to 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, respectable appearance, thin make ; dressed in a light suit of HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from Epsom : a black cart Mare, aged, 16 hands high, near hind foot white, legs has been trimmed, and has a forcy appearance, a white spot between ears, carries his head high wheg walkind— Metropo- litan Police, V Division, November 8. Stolen between 2' 30 p. m. on the 26th, and 11 a. m. on the 27th ultimo, from a field at Putney, a dark bay cob Gelding, 14 hands high, black points, rather short tail, slightly chipped knees, and small saddle marks.— Metropolitan Police, V Divi- sion, November 8. Stolen from a field at Caronisclawdd, during the night of the 25th ultimo, the property of Mr. John Williams : an aged dark mare Pony, white star on forehead, blind of near eye, near hind leg swollen, and in low condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Lloyd, Police Station, Aber- ystwith, or to Sergeant Lyons, Tregaron, Cardiganshire.— Bow- street, November 6. Stolen from a field at Nantwich, in the county of Chester, on the night of the 24th or morning of the 25lh ult.: a black aud white store Cow, about 4 years old, and has a large hind foot from the effects of the foot and mouth disease. Information to be given^ to Superintendent Laxton, County Police, Nantwich.— Bow- street, November 4. Stolen during the night of the 25th ultimo, from a field at Lingen, Herefordshire : a dark coloured male Donkey, about 9 years old, blind with the right eye, and in rather thin condition, had only one shoe on one of the forelegs when lost. Information to be given to Superintendent Dykes, County Police Station, Leominster, or to Sergeant Bound, Police Station, Wigmore, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, November 4. Stolen from a field near Henley, Oxon, on the night of the 29th ultimo : two bay half- bred Horses, one 3 years old, about 13j hands high, tail cut square, just above the hocks, and two clip marks ou off hip ; the other 6 years old, 14 hands high, switch tail, and star on forehead, the property of Mr. John Jones, horse dealer. Supposed by a man who goes iu the name of BROMME, about 20 years of age, 5 feet high, dark hair, no whiskers, stout built, very much pockpitted, marked on left side of neck from abscess ; dressed in pepper- and- salt coloured jacket, worsted cord trousers, padded inside of knees, light cloth cap, violet plaid shirt, silk coloured neck- erchief, and wears a white neckerchief over it; belongs to Leightonstone; he has been travelling to fairs in various parts of the country, in company with Mr. Jones, and is well known to horse dealers. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, Oxford, or to Superintendent Coates, Police Station, Henley on- Thames, Oxon.— Bow- st., November 1. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Welshpool, on the 30th ultimo, charged on a warrant with obtaining £ 2 from Elizabeth Jones," at Pantglas, by false pretences : a woman calling herself ELLEN HUGHES, alias LLOYD, a native of Dolgelly, about 58 yrs of age, middle height, rather stout build, full fresh face squints, speaks with a Welsh accent, and turns her face slightly on one side. She takes lodgings iD some out of the way place and states that she has valuable papers with some clergyman' aud has had a sum of money from him upon them, she borrows money to repay ; she is supposed to be dressed in a black velvet bonnet, pepper- and- salt- coloured woollen shawl aud grey winsey dress, sometimes wears a black straw hat ' with large brim ; she is well known about Llanbrynmair Cemmes Machynlleth, Aberdovy, Carno, Dolgelley. Llandri'llo, Llan- rhaiadr, and in most parts of North Wales, Chester and Liverpool; she also states that she wants to buy butter, fruit, & c. Information to be given to the Deputy Chief Constable, Welshpool, or to Police Constable Rogers Guils- field, near Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street,' Nov. 8. SAMUEL PARKER, suspected of stealing a Jacket at Lidgate, in the county of Suffolk, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 1st instant, has been apprehended and the property found.— Bow- street, November 8. Stolen on the 2nd instant, the property of Joseph Watson, of Kirk Ella Grange, farmer : a new dark mixture cloth Top- coat, with a pocket in each lap at the outside, a small ticket pocket on the right side, and one inside breast pocket; and a pair of drab woollen cord Trousers. By a man who had been living with Mr. Watson, goes by the name of WATSON SAM, and belongs to Norfolk, about 26 vears of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, aud stout; dressed in a dark cloth coat, blue guernsey, cord or fustian trousers, blue cloth cap, with peak, aud strong lace boots. Information to be giveu to Superintendent . Ellerker, Welton, Brough, York.— Bow- street, November 8. Absconded from Halesworth on the 30th ultimo, charged with embezzlement: JONATHAN HOWLETT JORDAN, a lath render, 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache ; dressed when he absconded in a light tweed suit and deer- stalker hat, but has also a dark suit and fur cap with him ; has a relative named Stead living at Baltic Wharf, Harrow Bridge, Stratford, Essex, a dealer in firewood ; it is suspected he will endeavour to leave the country for America ; all expenses will be paid and a photograph forwarded on appli- cation to Inspector Taylor, Halesworth, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, November 8. Stolen in the parish of Wouldham, on the 1st instant: an old- fashioned large- size pair- case silver Watch, and silver Chain attached, the property of John Martin. By a man, who lodged in the house, about 26 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, and no whiskers; dressed in white slop, moleskin trousers, and black cap. He is supposed to have left Gravesend in the Hull steam boat for Middlesborough, in company with another man, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, brown hair and whiskers ; dressed in velveteen jacket, and moleskin trousers. Information to be given to Superintendent Merritt, Kent County Constabulary, Police Station, Chatham.— Bow- street, November 6. Absconded en the 1st instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: ALFRED RACON, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, slender build, sallow complexion, light brown hair, small light moustache, ftift on chin, peculiar shaped legs, rather knock- kneed ; dressed when last seen in a black cloth coat, light- coloured vest, black cloth trousers, tall silk hat. It is his intention of leaving for either America or Australia. Information to be given to Superintendent Hunt, Town Hall, Leeds, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, November 6. Description of JAMES CORNWALL, charged with breaking open a Box in the bedroom of a house in Wolver- hampton, where he was lodging, and stealing— a pair of dark striped Trousers, nearly new, fall front ; a silver albert watch Guard, large links ; a green plaid Tie; and a black cloth Vest: he is 6 feet high, and dressed in a black jacket and trousers, marked with paint, spotted vest, white billycock hat, and striped shirt front. Information to be given to Chief Constable Segrave, Chief Constable's Office, Wolver- hampton, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, November 6. Description of WILLIAM MARTIN, alias GUIL- LAUME MARTIN, alias CASA BIANCA, alias COM- PERE, alias COWPER, a Frenchman, who, during the month of July last, obtained possession of a paper mill at Hampton Gay, in the county of Oxford, and is now charged with stealing a large quantity of Lead from the mill, the property of the President and Scholars of Wadham College, iu the University of Oxford : he is about 37 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, black hair, dark foreign appearance, and speaks with a slight French accent. Information to be given to Inspector Bowen, Constabulary Station, Woodstock, Oxon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, November 4. Description of a man who gave the name of JOHN DRAY ARNOLD ( supposed fictitious), charged on warrant with stealing Bank of England Notes to the amount of £ 135, st Farningham Cattle Fair, on the 15th ultimo : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark hair, little or no whiskers, aud very corpulent; dressed in dark clothes, and has the appearance of a horse dealer. Information to be given to Superintendent Fread, Police Station, Dartford, or to Superintendent O'Kill, Police Station, Sevenoaks, Kent. — Bow- street, November 4. Description of HENRY KNOTT, who has absconded, charged with embezzling, on the 4th July last, 10s. and various other sums, the monies of his masters, Stanley Brothers, brick manufacturers, of Nuneaton : he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light auburn hair, blue eyes, long features, and appears dull and reserved ; dressed in light brown overcoat, light coloured trousers and vest, blue necktie, old side- spring boots, aid black billycock hat; he is a native of Nuneaton, and has been a clerk. Information to be given to Superintendent Austin, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, November 4. Stolen on the 23rd ultimo : from 60 to 70 gold and silver Watches, and about 45 gold Rings, of various kinds, some set with bloodstones, which had been entrusted to a workman, to convey to the shop of Lewis Briggs, the following is a description of some of the articles stolen : a new silver lever Watch, silver dial; a silver lever Watch, white dial, gold hands ; a Boston silver lever Watch, No. 6598 ; a lady's gold lever Watch, with gold Guard and Locket attached ; the pro- perty of Lewis Briggs, Marsh- lane, Leeds. By WILLIAM ALLEN, a watchmaker by trade, Leeds, last in the employ- ment of Mr. Briggs, and absconded with the above property- on the 23rd ultimo : he has worked in London, Bradford, and Coventry, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slender make, dark hair and moustache, and very prominent forehead; he is accompanied by his wife and a little girl, 2 POLICE GAZETTE. Description of CHARLES SMITH STEELE, a watch and clockmaker, who absconded from Liscard, on the 30th ultimo charged uuder warrant with stealing three Watches ( recovered), the property of his employer : about 33 years of age, medium height aud buiW, dark complexion, daikhair, combed straight back off the forehead, dark whiskers and moustache; dressed in a blue braver jumper jacket, dark striped trousers, overcoat, and muller hat; carries a dark freen satchel, with strap across the shoulders ; formerly worked in Dublin, Kingstown, and Clerkenwell. He is an Austrian, 28 years of age, short, dark com- plexion, hair, whiskers, and slight moustache ; dressed in light overcoat, dark vest, light grey trousers, and high hat. D.' on left side ; be was sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude at Agra, by General Court Martial, for insubordination and using threatening language, on the 25th of May, 1868. Description of a man and woman charged at Bridgnorth, with attempting to pick pockets, in the fair on the 20th ult.: they gave the names of WILLIAM and ELLEN NEALE, of 16, Gerard- street, Liverpool ( which is false), the man is 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light brown hair, sandy whiskers and moustache, sallow complexion, blue eyes, oval features, he is well made, and of respectable appearance; dressed in high black hat, dark coat and vest, striped trousers, and slate or grey overcoat: the woman is about 34 years of age, short and stout, ruddy complexion, black hair, has. cut marks about her mouth and forehead ; dressed in black crape, bonnet with red rose in front, dark striped shawl and dress, she is a very active woman. They travel fairs in connection with cheese hawkers. The woman was committed on the 4th instant to Salop Gaol under the VagraDt Act, and the man discharged. CHARLES MONTAGUE ( supposed fictitious), a clerk, native of London, rather thin made, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8| inches high, dark complexion, long thin features, dark brown hair and whiskers, nose rather crooked and inclines slightly to the left, brown eyes, nearly blind with left eye, cut on right eyebrow, boil scar left cheek, and has lost two upper and one of his lower front teeth ; dressed iu a high- crowned silk hat, rather long grey overcoat, and brown trousers. Smith was convicted at Hereford, in May, 1871, for attempting to commit a felony ; and again at Chipping Sod- bury, in July, 1871, for stealing Plate from a public- house.
