CONTAINING The substc\ ce of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charaed with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5238 FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 1872. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all I< etters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without hiB authority. INFORMATIONS. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. About 11 a. m. ou the 4th instant, a young girl named Dickenson, was stopped on the turnpike- road, in the parish of Burcott, uear Oxford, and robbed of a white pocket hand- kerchief, marked ' E. Dickenson.' By a tramp about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high; dressed in a white slop, black hat, blue striped shirt, dark trousers, and lace- up boots. In- formation to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, August 9. Stolen from the person in Brighton, since the 5th instant : A gold repeater and stop Watch, maker Courvoisier, number supposed to be 6401; with snake pattern Chain attached. A silver Watch, No. 12061, with a gold snake pattern Albert, with three double links, and a half of a locket attached, having the words ' In memory of' in black letters ou it. A small silver Geneva Watch, minute hand, engine turned case, ' Richardson' supposed to be scratched on inside. A small size silver hunter, English made, has ' W. B.' and November 11, 1865, on inside of case, a gold albert attached, and a gold locket with blue enamelled drop. A silver Geneva Watch, with gold face. A double case gold Geneva Watch, gold dial, maker Secomte. A gold hunting Watch, small size, maker Gonard Penton. A large size gold Geneva Watch, white face, case dented, and a piece of gold let in near where the case fastens. An old fashioned double case silver verge Watch, large face, maker Gowland, Sunderland, No. 17. A silver Geneva Watch. A small silver Watch, plain face, minute hand. A silver plated Watch, maker J. Taylor, has initials ' M. R.' on inner case. A gold Geneva Watch. A pair of Opera- glasses, in a leather case, the top of which is rubbed off, small strap attached. A large size gold Watch, double case, white dial, sunk second hand. A silver keyless Watch, by Bennett. A gold crystal case Watch, maker Walker, No. C390, stolen on the Chain Pier. Stolen from the person in Brighton, on the 6th instant : A plain gold French Watch, with gold Albert Chain with a Whistle at the end. , An old gold Watch, with gold face, with a black Chain attached. A gold lever Watch, has a small place in upper case to see the figures, and small enamel on the back. A silver hunting Watch, ' Davis' ou inner case, with a gold Albert Chain attached, having on it a gold Key and Locket. A pearl and diamond horseshoe Pin. A gold Pin, set with pearls, and has a pearl iu blue enamel in the centre. A pair of black opera pebble Glasses, maker Fisher. A large silver lever single case Watch, with imitation com- pensating balance. A large gold English level Watch, maker , Coventry. A large gold English lever Watch, single case, plain face, maker Shrivel!, Brighton, with a gold curb Chain and a Guinea, dated 1797, attached. A small gold Geneva Watch, the glass cracked, and a small crack in the dial, a gold albert Chain, with a gold Lccket, containing the likenesses of two gentlemen, and some Trinkets; also a gold Ring, with bloodstone. Stolen from the person of a Gentleman at Culham Station, near Oxford, on the 9th nltimo: a silver lever Watch, capped and jewelled in eight holes, maker Sorg, New Kent- road, London. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, Auqust 5. Stolen from the person at Bat and Ball Fair, near Hails- ham, Sussex, on the 23rd ultimo : a medium- size Metallic Pocket- book, nearly filled with writing, and containing three .£ 20 Notes, Nos. 29761, 29762, and 29763, dated March 28th, 1872 ; and several £ 10 and £ 5 Notes, all of the Bank of England, and supposed to be of the following Nos. 29761, 29767, dated 20th May, 1872, 17460, dated 23rd March, 1872, the £ 5 notes supposed numbered 26805— 6— 7— and 8 ; also a Cheque for .£ 10 Gs., payable from Joseph Gorringe to R. R. Verral; and several pieces of Scrap Memorandum. Sup- posed by a man, about 22 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, round full face, brown hair, cut very short, no whiskers or moustache, and rather stout figure; dressed in a blue cloth overcoat, dirty drab colour trousers, black billycock hat, and a white silk handkerchief, tied loosely round the neck. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes; to Superintendent Wag- horn, Hailsham ; or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- streii, August 5. Stolen from the person on Goodwood Race- course, on the lst instant: a gold pair- case duplex movement Watch, cream- coloured dial, gold hands, had attached a gold curb albert Chain. Information to be given at the Chief Con- stable's Office, Lewes, to Superintendent Pocock, Cuckfield, or to Superintendent Pratt, Chichester.— Bow- st., August 2. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Runcorn, between 11- 30 p. m. on the 3rd, and 8 a. m. on the 4th instant, the undermentioned articles: a strong black cloth monkey Jacket, two pockets outside laps, and one in left breast, nearly new ; a ditto, far worn ; a brown and white woollen plaid Shawl, large size and pattern, nearly new;. a blue and white striped cotton Shirt, metal buttons, quite new ; a Scotch Cap, made of strong dark cloth, Brooch in front, tassel on top, and ribbon behind; and a pair of man's Boots, with elastic sides, plain fronts, one has been cut on the instep, and had a piece of soft leather stitched near the hole, nearly new. Supposed by a tramp, as he left a pair of shooting boots, tops made of crimped leather, toes capped, and clumped soles, far worn, in the yard behind him. Information to be given to Superintendent Aston, Police Station, Runcorn, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 5. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from Midsomer Norton, on the night of the 27th ultimo : a brown gelding Donkey, about 10 years old, without shoes, and a large patch of hair rubbed bff the rump. Supposed by a dirty looking man, having the appearance of a gipsy. Information to be given to Superintendent Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol.— Bow- street, August 9. Found at Bettws- y- Crwys, Salop, about the lst of June last, and supposed to have been stolen : two mountain Ponies, one a brown Mare, aged, about 11 or 12 hands high, very long tail; the other a black yearling filly Colt, both in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Baxter, Church Stretton, Salop, or to Police Constable Williams, New- Castle- Clun, Salop.— Bow- street, August 5. Stolen from a field at Bickley, Cheshire, on the night of the 29th ult.: a fat Shropshire down Ewe, marked ' R. S. D.' on left side. Information to be given to Superintendent Wilson, Police Station, Tattenhall, or to Sergeant Powell, Malpas, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 5. Stolen from a field at High Halden, during the night of the 27th ultimo : thirteen Kent Tegs, no marks on them, having been recently shorn. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, Police Court, Cranbrook, Kent.— Bow- street, August 5. Description of a man giving the name of SAMUEL EXLEY, alias ROBERT BUTLER, committed for trial, charged with stealing the Mare from Henddol, iu the parish of Celynin, the property of Mr. John Owens, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 31st ultimo : about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4i inches high, grey eyes, light sandy hair, whiskers, and beard ( small), fair complexion, high forehead, and scar on right arm near elbow ; says he is a native of Leeds, and belongs to the Militia. Information to be given to Inspector Jones, Police Office, Dolgelley, North Wales.— Bow- street, August 2. Stolen from Turncole Farm, on Southminster Marshes, on OJ.- about the 23rd ultimo : twenty- five half- bred Oxford Down and Kent Lambs, and six Kent Ewes, the property of Mr J. F. Kemp. £ 15 reward will be paid for any informa- tion as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the of/ ender or offenders. Information to be given to Inspector P. utledge, Police station, Latchingdon, Maldon, Essex,— Bow- sir ect, August 2. Stolen on the 22nd ult.: a dark brown Pony, 11 hands high, aged, and a varnished Cart, ' Roughton, Bexley Heath,' on off side. By a man, 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, auburn hair and whiskers ( supposed sine*- shaved); dressed in black pilot jacket, black vest, tweed trousers, black cap, and lace- up boots.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, August 2. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded, WM. ROWLINGS, charged on warrant with having on the 25th of June last, at the parish of Tipton, he being a commission agent and servant to James Brown, embezzled £ 1 5s.: he is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, slightly built, brown hair and eyes, sallow complexion, leng thin face and chin, bad teeth, and lisps a little; dressed in black silk hat, black frock coat, black vest and trousers, all much worn. Information to be given to Superintendent Holland, Wednesbury, or to Sergeant Button, Tipton, Stafford, who holds the warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, August 9. StoleD from a bedroom at the ' Maid's Head' inn, Stafford, on the 6th instant: a gold Chain, with gold Locket, containi. g a gentleman's likeness, gold Seal and Pencil- case attache" ; a Ring, with initials ' E. F.;' a lady's ditto, with five stones ; a ditto hair Ring, with initials ' E. S. f two steel Purses ; a pair of gold Ear- rings and Brooch, with corals : a ditto, with crystals ; a ditto, plain : a silver Brooch, with crystals; a crimson satin Scarf; and about £ 5 in Money. By a man, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, well built, dark curly hair, fresh looking, of smart and respectable appearance ; dressed in grey jacket, black and white plaid trousers, and carried a black portmanteau : represented him- self to be a comedian. Supposed to be well known iu Liver- pool. Information to be given to Inspector Bowen, Guildhall, Stafford.— Bow- street, August 9. On the nignt of the 28th ultimo a man obtained lodgings at the White Lion Inn, Lichfield- street, Burton- on- Trent, and stole therein : a brown shooting Jacket, two pockets outside and one inside breast pocket; a white moselle Vest, both old ; a white silk Handkerchief, yellow border; a cameo set of Ear- rings and Brooch ; and " a lady's Belt, black corded silk with plated gold Buckle, snake pattern. He is about 22 years of age, about 5 feet 0 inches high, light completion, light hair, no whiskers or moustache, smart appearance: dressed in a light grey suit and black hat. Information to be given to Superntendent Oswell, Burton- on- Trent, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, August 9. Stolen on the 6th instant, from the dwelling- house, 52, Bailiff- street, Northampton : £ 2 10s. iu Gold. By a mart who took lodgings at the house, stating that he was clerk : t the Railway Station, which was false : he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, small whiskers, cross- eyed, nose turned a little on one side, left eye rather larger than the right, and has a very prominent upper tooth ; dressed in a light straw hat with a black band, light blue necktie, bright blue ribbed cloth jacket and vest, black and white small plaid trousers, with a black stripe down the side. He is the same man who is described in the Police Gazette of the 7th instant, as having stolen a gold Watch, from a dwelling- house in the borough of Leicester, on the 2nd inst., and the clothes he was then wearing were left behind, at 52, Bailiff- street, Northampton. Information to be given to Chief Constable Keenan, Northampton. — Bow- st., Auqust 9. Description of JAMES WRIGHT, an auctioneer, who absconded from Stroud, Gloucestershire, on the 20th ultimo, charged with putting off three forged Bills of Exchange : he is about 39 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, light com- plexion, long sandy whiskers, high forehead, has lost the left tnumb, is a native of Totshill, near Carlisle, and is well known at Gretna- green. Information to be given to Superintendent Hanbridge, Stroud, Gloucester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Auqust 9. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Stephen Phillips, Snodland, Kent: a pair of blucher Boots, nearly new ; a pair of woman's elastic- side Boots, old, with new elastics ; a pair of woman's leather Boots ; two waterproof Macintoshes, one black, the other light, stained with brown ; a night Dress, marked ' J. M. P.' in red cotton ; an unbleached Pillow- case; a parcel of Silk, in white puper ; a copper Kettle ; and a white course linen Apron, torn at one corner. By a iodger, a discharged soldier from the 44th Regiment, from 25 to 30 yrs. of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in dark coat and vest, light moleskin trousers, and light liuen hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Hulse, Kent Constabulary, West Malling.— Bow strcet, August 7. Absconded on the 31st ultimo, stealing ,£ 13, the moneys of his master : a German, 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, fair hair ; dressed iu drab suit and straw hat; is likely to emigrate. — Metropolitan Police, M Division, August 7. Stolen on the 2nd instant, from 36, Rathbone- place, St. Marylebone : £ 22 14s. Cd., the money of his employer, by a porter, 17 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair com- plexion ; daessed in dark suit and black felt hat, and wore a black albert.— Metropolitan Police, JG Division, August 7. Stolen at the village of Llanhrynmair, on the night of the 29th ultimo : a drab linen Coat ; a moleskin Waistcoat, drab linen sleeves and back ; a pair of cotton cord Trousers, with fall front; a cotton Shirt, with initials ' J. AY.' on the skirt; J G P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. August 2 i two pairs of woollen Stockings ,• all in q, wet state. By a tramp, dressed in dark clothes, and dark jimcrow hat. In- formation to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, New- town, or to Police Constable Edwards, Llanhrynmair, Mont- gomeryshire.— Bow- street, Aitgust 5. Description of JOHN BROWN, charged under a warrant with stealing from Alsager, on the 30th ultimo : a black alpaca Dress ; a black stuff Dress ; a Petticoat; a pair of Stockings'; the property of Thomas Smith. He is 26 yrs. of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 iuches high, stout build, full face, round shouldered, small beard under chin; dressed iu white duck jacket, moleskin trousers, and black billycock hat ; stated he came from Whitchurch, and is a bricklayer's labourer. He is accompanied by Mary Ann Smith, wife of Thomas Smith, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 2 iuches high, stout built, sallow complexion, brown hair and eyes, and has a hole in one cheek from a wound. ( Information to be given to Superintendent Roubottom, Middlewich, or to Sergeant Dale, Hall Green, Lawton, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 5. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Mr. Robert Walker, of Cowley, near Oxford, on the evening of the 31st ultimo: a silver lever Watch, maker Fisk and Son, Oxford, No. 20537. By a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion; dressed in a light tweed jacket, dark trousers and cap; states that he is a native of Shrivenham, Berks, and has the appearance of a stableman. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, August 5. Stolen on the 2nd instant, in the Borough of Leicester : a gold English lever Watch, gold dial, No. C3I9, maker, F. W. Wale, Leicester. By a man about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, broad set, dark brown hair, fair com- plexion, cross- eyed, his uose turned a little on one side, and has a tooth standing very proniiuent in top jaw ; dressed in dark mixture coat aud vest, Bedford cord trousers, and light straw hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Farndale, Town Hall, Leicester.— Bow- street, August 5. Absconded from Hollin Barn, near Thirsk, on the night of the 26th ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing six Sovereigns, belonging to David Fraiser, his master : GEORGE DUNN, a farm servant, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, light sandy hair, cut short, fair complexion, no whiskers or moustache, scar on upper lip, which he says was caused by the kick of a horse; dressed in a black velvet jacket, old black vest, with a new patch near to the lift pocket, light woollen cord trousers, narrow stripe and fly fronts, strong lace- up boots with toe- plates, aud lilack round billy- cock hat. He states that he is a native of Preston, near Hull, living part of last year at North Park, near Beverly, and at Fridaythorpe, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and left there about 3 mouths ago. Information to bj given to Deputy Chief Constable Walmsby, Northallerton, or to Inspector Nicholson, Constabulary Office, Thirsk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 2. Description of WILLIAM MARTIN, file cutter, who has absconded from Worcester, charged with embezzling cer- tain moneys belonging to a Friendly Society, to which" he was secretary : he is 29 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow complexion, black wavy hair curled at sides, very full black eyes, clean shaved when last seen, short thick neck, stout built. Information to be given to the Worcester City Police, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- strcct, Augtist 2. Description of THOMAS HILL, late Postmaster of Little Hulton, near Bolton, who absconded, aud charged with embezzling £ 30, belonging to the Postmaster- General: he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh com plexion, sandy hair, grey eyes, a cut mark near one eye, and has artificial teeth. Information to be given to Snperinten dent Holland, County Constabulary, Town Hall, Little Bolton; a warrant has been issued for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 2. Description of RICHARD J. W. LADD, who is charged on a warrant with fraud : he is 22 years of age, 5 feet 8 ins. high, round shoulders, fair complexion, blue eyes, rouian nose, small moustache ; dressed in grey frock coat, black trousers, and high black hat. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, August 2. Description of JAMES IRVINE, charged on a sheriff's warrant with embezzling monies to the extent of £ 77, belonging to his employer Mr. Michael Yates, coutractor, West Nile Street, Glasgow : a clerk, about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 3 iuches high, dark brown hair, reddish beard and moustache, aud ' has lost a portion of right forefinger ; he resided iu Canon- street, Glasgow ; dressed respectably. In- formation to be given to Chief Constable McCall, Glasgow, or to Superintendent Brown, Central Police Chambers, Glasgow.— Bow street, August 2. Absconded since the 20th ultimo, embezzling £ S, the money of his employer : a man, 23 years of . age, 6 feet high, fair complexion, light curly hair, weak eyes, good- looking ; dressed in dark clothes, aud is of gentlemanly appearance ; supposed to have gone to Salisbury.— Meh'spolitan Polite, E Division, August 2. Stolen from No. 4, Christ Church- terrace, Oxford, on the 26th ultimo : a gold Ring, set with garuets; and a lady's gold chased Ring, with vacant space for hair. Also from a bed- room at No. 3, Christ Church- terrace, ou the 27th ultimo : a gold plain mourning Ring, with inscrip- tion ' In memory of William Davey,' date and age inside ; a gold mourning Ring, set with pearls, hair inside.; a gold cameo Brooch, jet border ; a velvet Purse or Bag, containing a rosery, with silver Cross attached; and sundry old gold Rings. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair and complexion, little whiskers ; dressed in black soft felt hat, when at work as a painter wore white slop, and corduroy trousers, otherwise wore a dark jacket, a travelling ! painter, a native of London, and frequents low common lodging- houses or beer- houses, much addicted to drinking ; stated he was going to Swindon on the 28th ultimo, when the stolen property was seen iu his possession ; will apply for work at plumber's, painter's, & c. Information to be given to Superintendent Head, Police Office, Oxford.— Bow- street August 2. Denbigh and Carnarvon ; stops in common lodging houses, remaining a mouth or two iu the same place, and goes about the country seek ing for work to clean watches, & c., carrying his tools iu a brown paper parcel. Information to be given to Superintendent Strefford, Welshpool, or to Police Con- stable Jones, Llansantffraid, Montgomeryshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 2. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of ALBERT MAUNDER, charged on a warrant with obtaining a watch by false pretences, the property of John Lulham : he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slightly made, dark curly hair, dark whiskers and moustache ; dressed in black cloth coat and vest, mixed tweed trousers, and black hat. He is a watchmaker. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, AuqvM 9. Description of a man who obtained £ 10, from the land- lord of the Paris Hotel, Folkestone, under false pretences, by passing a Cheque ou the London and Couuty Bank, at Tun- bridge : he gave the name of A. H. HEIGHTON, coal merchant, the cheque was headed Cox and Co., and signed A. H Heighton, agent, stated he had a ship loaded with coals from Ghent for Folkestone Harbour, and which would arrive the next day, and to be sold for 18s. per ton, this was on the 30th ultimo ; he was traced to Maidstone and Graves- end, and is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, and is deformed in the shoulder by a twist of the arm ; dressed in dark clothes, and wore a straw hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Martin, Police Office, Folkestone.— Bow- street, August 7. Description of THOMAS FAWCETT, alias PUDDING TOM, charged with obtaining by false pretences on the 27th July last, from Isaac Turner, watchmaker, Penrith: a silver verge Watch, capped with a seconds pointer, No. 73S4, maker Eaton, London : he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy whiskers, light brown hair, stout made, stammers very much when talking ; dressed in a dark cloth coat and waistcoat, fustian trousers, and black billycock hat; he is a native of Temple Sowerby, Westmorland, a warrant has been issued for his apprehension.
