The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Tht Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5229 FRIDAY, JULY 19, 1872. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor fqr insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested thnt the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. About 2 p. m. on the 29th ultimo, some person at present unknown, left at the cloak- room, General Railway Station, Chester, a black American leather bag, and on paying the usual charge of 2d., received a receipt numbered ' 369.' On the 9th iustant, the bag was found to contain the dead body of a Female Child, apparently about two weaks old ; from certain marks upon the said child, and from other circum- stances, it is believed that its death ' fras the result of violence, and any persou who can give information which shall lead to the identity of, the persou who left the bag, or of the body of the child, or the bag or materials found iu it, are requested to communicate at once, personally, or in writing, with the undersigned. Description of the bag: Black American leather, 16 inches by 12 iuches, lined with brown calico, has a lock, but no key attached, being at the time it was hauded into the cloak- room unlocked, but fastened by twine. Around the body was about half a wotuans white flanuel petticoat, near y new, about 2 feet in length, without top baud, aud having a seam an inch iu depth aro ind the bottom, a cotton baud about 24 inches long by 3 iuches wide, and upon the body, a small calico chemise. Pasted upon the bag were two labels, namely, ' G. W. R., Chester to London,' aud ' G. W. R., Chester to Oswestry.' The articles described can be seen at the City Police Office, Town Hall, Chester. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, about 4 a. m. on the 13th instant, whilst in the neighbourhood of Covent Garden, London: a silver lever hunting Watch, capped and jewelled, maker W. Renshaw, Northampton, No. 23314. Information to be given to Chief Constable Keenan, Borough Police, Northampton.— Bow- street, Jvlv 19. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Culham Railway Station, near Oxford, on the 9th instant: a gold open- face English lever Watch, enamelled, maker Alfred Holliday, Oxford, No. 15826 ; also from the person of a geutlemau at the same station on the 9th iustant : a small open- face silver Watch ; and from a lady: a f- plate single case English lever Watch, maker Brocebridge, No. 37390. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or to Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, July 15. Description of a man who committed a highway robbery, in the parish of Sampford Courtenay, about 3 p. m. on the 11th instant, by robbiug Mrs. C. Hearn, of Trecott Farm, Sampford Courtenay, of a purse containing 7a. in Silver ; a few Coppers; aud three Bills, s 1 tied, from persons oE North plexion, not much whiskers, if any ; dressed in a suit of dirty grey clothes, aud has the appearauce of a tramp, luformation to be giveu to Acting Sergeant Sherriff, Devon Constabulary, North Tawton, or to Superintendent Mitchell, Constabulary Office, Paris- street, Exeter.— Bow- street, July 15. Stolen on the Gth instant, from the persou of George Emms, at Beccles : a small sized silver Geneva hunter Watch, engine- turned oases, and silv? r ilbert Chain, links rather more than half au inch long, attached. Information to be given to Inspector Cole, Police Station, Beccles, Suffolk.— BwM- street, July 10, BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 16th, or the morning of the 17th instant, the dwelling- house of Miss Reddish, of Prest- bury, near Macclesfield, Cheshire, was broken and entered through the pantry window, which had been left unfastened, and the following property stolen therein : an old- fashioned metal Tea- pot, oval- shaped, and chased at the sides ; a metal Tea- pot, round- shaped, with black handle, which is broken ; six German silver Tea Spoons ; a cooked Fowl; and a Bottle of Porter. luformation to be given to Superintendent Williamson, Couuty Police Office, Macclesfield, Cheshire.— Bow- street, July 19. On the night of the 13th instant, Villa Bianca, Bath- wick- hill, Bath, was burglariously entered, aud the following property stolen therein : a silver fancy Cruet Stand ; a silver Top to Pickle Bottle ; a silver Spoon ; a Spirit Stand, a Sugar Basket, a Pickle Stand, a Cruet Stand for six bottles, and a Caster, all plated. Information to be given to Head Constable Muttlebury, Central Police Office, Orange- grove, Bath.— Bow- street, July 15. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on the 5th and 7th instant, at Kirkbythore and Gathorue Hall, Westmoreland : an old grey and red mixture tweed shooting Coat, torn on one lap, and has several patches on of the same material; a pair of blucher Boots, about half worn, but not been Boled, four holes on each side without brass eyelets in holes, grooved iron heel plates, and two rows of nails round the soles ; also a pair of Shoes, nearly new, has three rows of sparables round the soles, cross in centre with sparables, has two holes on each side, one row of bras3 sprigs on each side of the spring of foot, and sparables on the heels. Supposed by PATRICK CRAIGEN, or CREGAN, who escaped from custody at Bridge Street Railway Station, Glasgow, and who was described in the Gazette of the 1st instant, and following dates; 25 years of age, 5 feet 5£ inches high, brown hair cut shirt, fair moustache and whiskers, scar of burn on left eyebrow, aud one above right eye, three on back of neck, first joint of middle finger injured and contracted, D on left side, is a native of Slighar, Wexford, Ireland ; dressed in grey tweed coat and vest, black cotton velvet under vest, moleskin trousers, and elastic side boots, and cloth cap with peak, luformation to be given to Superintendent Parks, Appleby, Westmoreland, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, July 15. Between 1 and 7 a. m. on the morniDg of the* 11th inst, the dwelling- house of J. F. Field, Esq., of Long Preston, was burglariously entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : about ten pounds of corned boiled Beef; two currant Loaves ; one Harvey's Sauce Bottle ; and 3s. 4d. in Money. By a man of the following description: about 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 incheS high, fresh complexion, sunken eyes, brown hair, ginger whiskers, thin light beard and moustache, oval face, and good looking : dressed in a dark mixture tweed shooting coat, pockets outside of laps, patched in several places with same material, torn on one lap, brown velveteen vest, bound with braid, moleskin trousers, nearly new, button up front, black billycock hat, with white bone horse- shoe on one side ; supposed to be PETER CRAIGEN or CREGAN, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 1st July and following dates, as having escaped from the railway station at Glasgow ; he had a lady's gold Watch, and a long gold Guard ( supposed stolen) in his possession; and a gold reversible Seal, bloodstone on one side, and white cornelian on the other ; and an old- fashioned gold Key ; the seal and key are in the possession of the Police here ; he sleeps in barns during the day, and travels by night. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Copeland, Settle, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 15. During the night of the 11th or moraine of the 12th instant, the dwelling- house of H. Gilbertson Esq., of the borough of Hertford, was burglariously entered, and the following property stolen therein : an old- fashioned gold repeater Watch, out of repair, and only strikes 1, enamel dial, and italic figures; £ 6 10s. in Gold ; ill in Silver ; two silver mustard Tops ; two silver pepper Tops ; the Bowl of a silver tea caddy Spoon; two old- fashioned silver Tea Spoons, engraved ' A. W.' in cypher ; a Florin of the early issue of the present feign; two gold Ear- pipes for deaf persons ; a silver Sugar Sifter : two Mustard Spoons, engraved ' J. A. G.' or 1H. E. G. and a pair of silver Sugar Tongs. £ 5 reward will be paid upon the apprehension f the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Police, Hertford, who will pay the above reward and all reasonable expenses.— Bow- street, July 15. Daring the night of the 9th instant, the dwelling house of Dr. Edward Weight, Wokingham, Berks, was burglariously entered, and the following property stolen therein : a silver Inkstand, with inscription, ' presented by friends to Dr. Weight'; a silver Cream Jug, with a guinea at the bottom ; a silver Sugar Bason ; an old fashioned pair of silver Sugar Tongs; an old fashioned taper silver Candleskick ; a silver Tea Scoop; two silver Tops of Cruets; two silver Tops of Ink- stands ; two silver Salt Spoons; a silver Mustard Spoon ; and a small silver Brooch ; also two purses, one green the other violet colour, containing about £ 2 in money. £ 20 reward will be paid on recovery of the property and convic- tion of the offender or offenders. About 2 am. on the 12th inxtant a burglary was mitted at the dwelling- house of Harry Henden, silversmith, Dartford, and stoleu therein : a silver Geneva Watch, opea- face, cream dial, No. 50204, gold balance, maker Henden, Dartford ; a silver open- face Watch, white dial, No. uuknown, maker H. Henden, Dartford; three silver lever Watches, one with Steel hands ; six or seven silver Geneva Watches, two of them numbered 56190 aud 45213. By two men, about 24 years of age ; dressed in dark clothes, one wearing a pair of green plaid trousers. Stolen by means of housebreaking from James Kemp, of Greatham, between 11 p. m. and 6 a. m on the night of the 10th instant: an English Concertina, new ; and a German ditto, both have twenty keys , and a brass Cornopian, which has been mended. Supposed by a man about 5 feet 9 inches high ; dressed in dark clothes, black billycock hat, and no shoes. WILLIAM PAGE, described in the Police Gazette of the 5th instaut, charged ( uuder the Bailee Act), with stealing a basket Trap, Pony, aud Harness, at Nuneaton, on the 28th ultimo, has been apprehended aud committed for trial at the next quarter sessions at Warwick. The pony, trap, and harness have been recovered.— Boxc- slrcet, July 19. Stolen from the Crosty, in the parish of Carno, about the 3rd instant: three small Ewes aud Lambs, not shorn, the ewes have about half of the right ear cut off, swallow fork and triangle punch hole in left car, thj lambs have a raddle mark forming a ring round the neck, one is a very good one got by a Shropshire down ram, and was kept for a ram, the property of Mr. McFarlan, Hendre, who offers a reward of £ b for the apprehension and conviction of the offender ar_ d recovery of the sheep, which was supposed to have been sold iu Welsh- pool Fair, on the 8th iustaut. luformation to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, or to Police Constable Pearson, Caersws, Montgomeryshire.— Boie- strect, July 19. Stolen from the dwelling- house of James Daniels, in the parish of Blean, Kent, on the 10th instant : a dark corded striped Coat, pockets at sides ; a yellow cotton Pocket Hand- kerchief ; and some Provisions. By a man, about 30 years ot ace 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout built, dark complexion ; dressed iu old dark frock coat aud trousers, old billycock hat, and lh'ht lace- up boots, with brass eyelet holes. Information to be given to Superintendent Walker, County Police Station, Canterbury, Kent.— Bow- street, July 19. Stolen from the dwelling- house of a gentleman in Bolton, on the 11th ultimo : a lady's gold English lever Watch, small size No. 60695, wilh cream- coloured dial, and chased cases, on the outside there is the word ' Patent,' and ( supposed) the figures 708 ; and a lady's Dress Ring, set with small diamonds and pearls. By a yo. mg man, who served his time as a chairmaker, but follows the business of a french polisher, 20 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, light brown hair, fresh complexion, no whiskers, a little bow- legged, scar on right temple, mole on rigiit cheek, and of boyish appearance ; dressed iu a blue pilot cloth reefer jacket, drab cord trousers, black and white knitted muffler, black velvet cap, made up iu pieces and trimmed with braid, puce and black plaid shirt, and a belt, but no braces. He is known by the police in several towns in Lancashire. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Borough Police Office, Bolton, Lan- cashire.— Bow- street, July 19. Absconded from Southport, charged with stealing a silver Watch : a woman, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stoops a little, full features, large eyes, and has a cut mark about centre of forehead ; dressed iu a black bonnet, trimmed with pink ribbon, black jacket, and black dress, and is of ladylike appearance. Information to be given to Head Con- stable Kershaw, Town Hall, Southport, Hants.— Bof- street, July 17. Absconded on the 26th ultimo, from Stoke- upon- Trent, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: FRANCIS BLACKWELL, 41 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, sandy whiskers, meeting under the chin, slight moustache, hazel eyes, has carbuncle marks on the ri" ht side of his neck, and on his breast; dfessed in a brown rough pilot jacket, pockets outside, bound with black braid, and° velvet collar, black cloth single breasted vest, watch pocket on left side, black corded cloth trousers, low crowned black billy cock hat, and elastic side boots. He served 17 years iu the 25th foot. Information to be given to Constable Bold, North Staffordshire Railway, Stoke- upon- Trent.— Bow- street, July 17. Description of F. HARRIS, watch aud clock maker, late • f No. 27, Rathbone- street, Tunstall, who absconded on the 6th instant, charged with stealiug three Watches and two albert Guards, which were entrusted to him to repair : about 132 years of age, 5 feet 5 iuches high, slender built, light com- plexion, whiskers and moustache, and round shouldered ; dressed in a rouud pepper- and- salt coloured jacket, aud waist- coat, light trous ; rs, black billy cock hat, he carries a wash leather satchel, and stated that ho was a native of Bristol. Information to be given to ' Superintendent Baker, Police Office, Tunstall, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, or at any Police Station in the County of Stafford.— Bow- street, July 17. Further information respecting the French gilt- dial Timepiece, stolen from Wickham Market, aud advertised in the Police Gazette on the 26th ultimo : the timepiece is supposed to be in the possession of a man in London, who left Wickham Market on the 24th ultimo : about 40 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, dark complexion, dark curly hair, tuft of hair on chin, sharp features, upright walk ; dressed in light clothes ; frequents the Old 44th, High- street, Wappiug, works in the docks, on board of ships, and is a marine store dealer. £ 1 reward will be paid on the recovery of the dial, aud con- viction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Inspector Durrant, Police Station, Wickham Market, East Suffolk.— Bow- street, July 17. Absconded from Conway, Carnarvonshire, on the 30th June last, charged with stealing from the person of James Rowlands, potter, at Conway: a Purse containing £ 2 iu Gold; a £ 5 Bank of England Note, which has been recovered, ch inged ; a hawker's £ 2 License for horse and cart, in the name of James Rowlands, and signed at Bangor ; and a Post Office Order for £ 3 6s,, drawn at Menai Bridge for John Thorpe, Manchester. A man named ROBT. WILLIAMS, a native of Brynsiencyn, Anglesey, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair* light brown moustache, chin clean shaved, grey eyes, aud very full face : dressed in dark coat aud vest., corduroy trousers, and billycock hat ; has served about 15 years iu the 23rd Regiment. Information to be giveu to Captain Pearson, County Constabulary, Car- narvon, or to Superintendent Evans, Police Office," Conway, Carnarvonshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bov- street, July 17. The undernamed persons are charged with stealing Clothes on the 3rd instant, at Kirkmichael, also with stealing Clothes, about tlie same time, from a barn at Cernghline, parish of Moulin, both in the county of Perth ( the stolen articles have been recovered) : WILLIAM MILLER or COOK, said to belong originally to Glasgow, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, black hair, dark whiskers round the chin, swarthy complexion, long thin face, common make ; dressed in dark grey tweed jacket, dark cloth trousers, strong boots, cap with peak, and generally wears a muffler round his neck. MARGARET FORD, belongs to Dundee, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet high, reddish hair, fresh complexion, aud round face; dressed iu a brown shawl, black straw hat trimmed with white ribbons, white stockings, and boots with elastic sides ; is blind, and sometimes sings in the streets. Information to be giveu to Chief Constable Gordon, Perth.— I Bow- street, July 17. Stolen from a lodging- house at Littlehampton, on the morning of the 12th iustant; a pair of spring- side Boots, imitation laces in front, toe- capped, and have been half- soled. By a man who lodged at the house, about 35 years of age, . about 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, whiskers, and mous- ' tache, which are turning ' grey, two large front teeth ( oufe overlays the other), and turns his toes in when walking ; I dressed in a black cloth suit, high black hat, aud is weaving the stolen boots, having Mt his own Hliifcd ; ' sttited Van a book- binder, and carried a cloth bag with him. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Holloway, Leominster, near Arundel, Sussex,' or to Sergeant Milham, Littlehampton. — Bow- street, July 17. Absconded on the 10th instant, from 23,' Chapel- street, Shoreditcb, charged with stealing £ 50, the money's of his father: a youth 13 years of age, fair complexion, dark hair ; dressed iu grey suit, side spring boots, and Scotch cap. — Metropolitan Police, G Division, July 15. Description of JOHN WM.
