CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5181 THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 1872. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Nam, e is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tho regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot bo published without his authority. INF 0 RMATI 0 NS. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Ou the evening of the 12th instant, at a quarter past eight, a barn iu the occupation of Mr. Thomas Ayres, situated in the village of Cumnor, was feloniously set on fire and destroyed, together with a stable and cow- shed, and a large quantity of corn : a man of the following description was seen to light several matches at the airhole of the barn, and then run away : he is about 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high ; dressed in a short round light slop, aud round black hat. £' M reward will be paid by Mr. Thomas Ayres, to any person giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Hedger, Berks Constabulary, Abingdon.— Bow- st., March 22. FORGERY. Description of a man charged with utteriug forged cheques at Portsmouth : — GAHAN, late clerk in the Union Bank, Quebec, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, browu hair, no whiskers, light brown moustache, fair com- plexion, medium size ; dressed when he presented the cheques iu an officer's uniform, 69th Regiment, has two suits of grey clothes, also a dark suit, a dark brown overcoat with velvet collar, and high- crowned felt hat ; is of gentlemanly appear- ance and address; his luggage was taken from the George Hotel to the Victoria Pier, Portsmouth, between 12 and 1 p. m. on the 8th instant; his mother lives at Cheltenham, he has a brother in the 20th Regiment, and he said that he was well known to Mr. Dawson, 77th Regiment. One of the forged cheques was for £ 15, at Grant and Co.' s Bank, High- street, Portsmouth ; one for ,£ 15, at their Branch Bank, Gosport; one for j£ 14 15s., at Mr. Trayler's, High- street, Portsmouth ; and one for £ 15, at the Hampshire Bank, High- street, purporting to be from Fitzroy Somerset to Alexander B. Gzowski, 69th Regiment, on Cox and Co., London ; in other forgeries he has used the names of other officers of the 69th Regiment. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in the borough of Tynemouth, on the 13th instant, two £ 5 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 50742 aud 98540. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stewart, Tyncmouth, Northumberland.— — Bow- street, March 25. Stolen from the person at the Railway Station, Welwyn, Herts, on the 15th instant, a gold hunting Watch, maker Hutton, Mark- lane, No. 12051 or 13051. [ f^ i Between 10 p. m. on the 20th and C a. m. on the 21st iust., the dwelling- house of Mr. Edwin Greggory, grocer, of Street, Somerset, were broken and entered, aud the following pro- perty stolen therein : a Cash Box, containing a Bank of England £ 5 Note, £ 12 in gold, about £ 13 10s. in Silver and Copper Monies, 10s. worth of Receipt Stamps, a Cheque from Robert Impey for £ i ( endorsed ' S. E. Clarke), a Policy for Fire Insurance, and the Will of Mr. E. Greggory. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Drewett, Somerton, Somersetshire.— Boio- street, March 25. CHARLES CUMMINGS, who was advertised in the Police Gazette cf the fcth instant, charged with burglary, Las been apprehended and remanded till the 26th inst. THOMAS PROVOST, charged with the same offence, is still at large; he was in company with Cummings in London on the 2nd instant. Information to be given to Superintendent Rawlins, Borough Police Office, Abingdon, Berks.— Bow- st., March 22. Between 9 p. m. 16th and 1 a. m. on the 17th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Joseph Brooks, situate in Bowater- street, West Bromwich, was entered, and the following pro- perty stolen therein : four boy's round black cloth Jackets, with twill linings and cloth buttons; a man's black cloth Jacket, lined with white flannel and cloth buttons ; a black scarf Shawl; and an old- fashioned cashmere Shawl, green on one side and black on the other, with green and black fringe round the edges. Supposed by three men of the following description : one about 29 years of age, rather tall, large nose, long features, and has a moustache, which is supposed to be false; dressed in dark cloth coat, cord trousers, patched on the knees, and cloth cap with peak. The others are from 18 to 20 years of age ; dressed in old shabby clothes, and billycock hat. Inforn st on to be given to Superintendent Woollaston, Staffordshire Ccnstabulary, West Bromwich.— Bow- street, March 2C, Stolen by means of horsebreaking from a house at Old Trafford, between 7 30 p. m and 8 30 a. m. on the 16th instant: a gold mounted Bracelet, set with carbunclas ; a lady's gold Ring, set with two opal, and two diamonds ; a lady's small fold Ring, set with carbuncles; aud two Australian sovereigns. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who shall give such information as will lead to the apprehension aud conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property. Information to be given at the nearest Police Station, or to Superintendent Bent, County Police Office, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- street, March 20. Stolen by means of housebreaking, during the afternoon of the 14th instant, the property of Mr. William Davies, of Brithdir- coch, Llanfihangel: an old jean Purse, containing 10s. in Half- crown Pieces, a white Pencil- case, with a Fen- knife in one end, and a pen and pencil in the other ; a small pair of Scissors; and a Comb, about eight inches long. Supposed by a tramp, from 30 to 4 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, rather slender make, dark hair and whiskers, meeting under the chin, and wore a white slop over his clothes. Information to be given to P. C. Williams, Llanfyllin, Oswestry, or to Superintendent Strefford, Welshpool, Mont- gomeryshire.— Bow- street, March 18. Duriug the night of the 15th instant, a drapers' shop in Middlesborough, was broken aud entered, and about £ 11 in Gold, and from £' i to £ i in Silver and Copper stolen therein. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough- on- Tees.-— Bow- street, March 18. Between 11 " 30 a. m. and 7 p. m. on the 27th of July last, the dwelling- house of Mr. James Edward Arthur, of No. 62, Duke's Brow, Blackburn, was broken and entered, and a quantity of Jewellery stoleu therein, for description of Pro- perty see English Police Gazette, 22nd Decembei, 1871. Five men are charged with committing the offence, three of whom, RICHARD JENKINS, THOMAS MURPHY, and JEREMIAH DYNAN, bave been arrested, and are awaiting trial. Description of the men not in custody, aud for whose apprehension warrants have been issued : JOHN TURNER, from 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, slender made, thin face, sandy whiskers, brown hair, long nose, has a long blue cut mark on face, from near the mouth backward ; dressed in a black suit, cloth cap, with French peak, and sometimes wears a dark billycock hat; he is a native of Birmingham, and supposed to be in gaol for robbery. And COCKNEY, from 20 to 22 years of age, aboijt 5 feet I inch high, proportionate make, round face and pimpled, large cut mark on face from near the mouth back- wards, one over right eye, no whiskers, light brown hair, and short nose ; dressed in plaid trousers, black coat, and black billycock hat. He is a native of London, and well known in Manchester and other places. They frequent every large town in England, Ireland, and Scotland. Information to be given to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Blackburn, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 15. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Description of ISAAC CASS, charged with stealing, on the 21st instant, a Horse, Harness, and Cart ( all recovered), the property of Edward Stephenson : he is a groom, 39 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender make, light brown hair ajjd whiskers, sallow complexion, sharp nose, in- kneed, and wears tight- fitting corduroy trousers. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 27. Stolen on the 9th inst., from Newmarket, three Horses : one dark bay Mare, clipped, aged, 14£ hands high, and has a lump the size of a walnut inside near fore knee ; another is a cob Mare, 5 years old, 13 bauds high, short square tail, while standing she points out her off fore leg, is handsome, and a good goer; the other has been found sold in the neighbourhood : by a man ( who was entrusted to take them to London for sale), about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh full face, and hair on chin; dressed in dark coat, closely buttoned long dark waistcoat, grey trousers, and soft round black hat. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Glasier, Mildenhall, or to Inspector Staggles, New- market, West Suffolk,— Bovi- stmt, March 25. Stolen from a field at Ebberston, between thelSOtli and 21st instant, the property of Thomas Harland: a Leicester shearling gimmer Sheep, in good condition, a round hole punched through both ears, and has a blue mark across the shoulders. Information to be given to Superintendent Jonas, Pickering, or to Inspector Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Falsgrave, Scarborough.— Bow- street, March 25. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. of age, looks older, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, pale complexion, light brown hair, little or no whiskers, moustache about three weeks' growth, slight figure, walks erectly, has been in the army, and is in the habit of singing in public- houses ; dressed in a lights coloured soft- crowned billycock hat, light brown er grey overcoat with velvet collar, black undercoat and vest, dark cloth trousers, and side- spring boots with buttons. Information to be given to Superintendent Cope, Police Station, Witney, Oxon, who holds the warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, March 27. Stolen in Bolton on the 15th instant, an old silver lever Watch, No. 32308, very thin case, had attached a worsted Guard with watch Key ( the name ' Pilkington ' on it. By two tramps: one ( who went into the house under the pre- tence of repairing gas fittings) is about 5 feet 10 inches high, about 40 years of age, dark brown hair, bushy whiskery dirty- looking, and proportionate make; dressed in a brown coat, very much mended and stitched in a rough way, black silk hat, peach- coloured neck scarf, black trousers, and boots. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 27. Stolen in Bolton on the 23rd instant, a gold lever Watch, maker John Monks, Bolton, N o. 31770, with steel ban U large one broken. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 27. WILLIAM CANDLER BIRD, late a partner in the firm of Hocken, Bird, Cole, & Co., of Aytoun- street, in the City of Manchester, and of No. 33, King- street, Cheapside, in the city of London, merchants, has absconded from Man- chester, charged with embezzlement, and larceny of Monies, belonging to the partnership : he is 57 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, hair turning grey and parted behind rather sallow complexion, whiskers going grey, near sighted, round shouldered and stoops, has a small foot, and of gentle- manly appearance. £ 50 reward will be paid to any person giving information which shall lead to the apprehension of the said William Candler Bird, within one month from this date. Information to be giveu to Chief Constable Palin, Manchester, or to Messrs. Sale, Shipman, and Seddou, solicitors, 29, Booth- street, Manchester.— Bow- st., March 27. Absconded from Chell, near Tunstall, charged with stealing £ 57 in Gold: a man of the following description, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark brown hair, dark eyes, and large nose, a collier by trade ; dressed in a black felt hat, blue cloth coat underneath, blue cloth coat, double- breasted, with velvet collar, black [ cloth vest and trousers, has two shirts on, one white calico, the other - black and red woollen, elastic- side boots, and a black and white plaid scarf. Information to be given to Superintendent Baker, Police Office, Tunstall; or at any Police Station in the County of Stafford.— Bow- street, Ho. rch 25. Description of HENRY KNOWLES, who absconded from Leintwardine, Herefordshire, on the 9th instant, charged on a warrant with embezzling the sum of £ 1 10s., the monies of his employer, George Meredith, baker, of Leintwardine : a baker, from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair complexion, fair hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed iu rather long single- breasted black cloth coat, grey vest, light coloured woollen cord trousers, soft black felt hat, with wire round the brim, and generally wears a white muffler round his neck ; he is a native of London, has served in the Army, and has a military appearance. He is supposed to have gone in the direction of Gloucester or Worcester. Information to be given to Superintendent Dykes, County Police Station, Leominster ; at the Police Station, Wigmore ; or to Police Constable Cross, Constabulary Station, Leint- wardine, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen from a railway line, in the parish of Stoks Hammond, during the night of the 18th instant: a black short Coat, turniug a brown colour, two outside skirt pockets and one inside left breast, which has been torn and repaired., the property of William Scott, of Stoke Hammond, railway ganger. By a tramp, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 or S ins. high; dressed in a long dirty brown coat, tweed trousers, dark cap or billycock hat, he was traced from Stoke Ham- mond to Linslade or Leighton Buzzard about 9 a. m. on the 19th March, going iu the direction of Liuslade. Description of a man giving the name of CHARLES BURTON, of Pontypool, South Wales, committed to Salop Gacrl, 011 the 21st instant, for 21 days, under the Vagrant Act: he is 40 years of age, 5 feet 10| inches high, swarthy com- pletion, blown hair and eyes, face pockmarked, burn on left arm, lame from recent injuries of his left leg; he travels with a horse and cart with tin ware, & c. ; was committed for trial at Shrewsbury, in 1867, for fowl stealing ; he sold at Market Drayton on the 20tli instant, a brown Pony, iu low condition, which is supposed to have been stolen. WILLIAM TAYLOR, No. 65, 38 years of age, 5 feet 4i inches high, fair complexion, grey hair, blue eyes, and two moles on left thigh ; was sentenced to five years' penal servitude, at Middlesex Sessions, for larceuy. THOMAS RAYMENT, No. 9019, 34 years of age, 5 feet 7f inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, left eyesight lias been injured by a shot; was sentenced to 7 years' peual servitude, at Chesterton Sessions, for larceny after previous conviction of felony. JAMES CASEY, No. 8536, 21 years of age, 5 feet inch high, fresh complexion, browu hair, blue eyes, eyes weak, sore lids, no lashes ; was sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude, at Central Cniml^ l Court, for larceny. Several cards were found on him, bearing the name of ' C. Lamburn, Plymouth,' also several letters from a young woman at Saltash.
