The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may bo made and addressed to MB. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably nccessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all abetters addressed to tho Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that tho Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may bo addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. ROBBERY AND LARCENY PROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Eastbourne, Sussex, oil the night of the 2ud instant: a pair- c iso silver verge Watch, maker William Holt, Eastbourne, No. 26041, has ' T. B.' engraved on the back of inner case, with steel Chain, common Key, aud a four- penny Piece attached. By a man, about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, had the appearance of a mechanic. Information to be given to Superintendent Waghorn. Hailsham, or to the Sergeant on duty, Police Station, Eastbourne, Sussex.— Dow- street, March 0. Stolen about 9 p. m. on the 21st ultimo, from the person of a gentleman on the platform of the Great Western Railway Station : a silver ribbed or fluted snuff Box, with an indenta- tion on the lid, either tho left or right corner. Also stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from Professor Phillips', the Parks, Oxford : a mahogany Box, about 5 inches by 3 ins. and about 2 inches deep, inside the lid when opened three small thermometers, inside the box a compass Box, with magnetic needle, and an Aneroid, by ' Cooke.' Information to be given to Superintendent Head, Police Office, Oxford.— Bow- street, March 6. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Absconded on the morning of the 2nd instant, charged with housebreaking : CHARLES ROBERT CUMMINGS, of Abingdon, 30 yrs. of age, about 5 feet 11 inchcs high, fair complexion, ginger hair und whiskers, grey eyes, of slender appearance, aud is a bad walker; dressed in low- crowned hat, dark jacket aud vest, dark grey trousers, with black stripe, shoes laced in front, and of very large size ; he is a gardener. THOMAS PROVOST, of Abingdon, 26 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, stout built, grey eyes, brown hair, sallow complexion, cleau shaved, aud he is a shoemaker ; dressed iu a low- crowned round hat, dark coat, dark grey trousers, with black stripe, elastic- side boo; -, and supposed to bo wearing a brown single- breasted overcoat. He is well known at low public- houses, where shoe clubs are held, and also to secretaries of shoe clubs, iS . They were traced on the tume day to Reading, w here they purchased new clothing. All reasonable expences will be paid. Information to be given to Superintendent Rawlins, Borough Police, Abingdou, Berks, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, March 8. Stolen between 10 p. m. on the 6th and 7 a. m. on the 7th instant, from a dwelling- lion <• at Tunbridge Well , by means of housebreaking: 32 Spoons— 7 Table, 6 Egg; 9 Dessert, 7 Tea, 1 Gravy, 2 Salt; all silver and have the initials ' J. A. B.' on them. 1 silver Fish Knife, initials ' J. A. B. <) ditto large Forks, ditto. 2 silver Decanter Stands. 2 silver Salt Spoons, marked ' Y.' 2 silver Sugar Tongs. 1 gold Pencil- case, with amethyst and a ' Forget- me- not' on it. 1 plated Marrow Spool; 2 Gravy Ladles. 1 small plated Salver, ; md. X2 iu Money.. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Embery Town Hall, Tuubridge Wells, Kent - Bow- street, March 8. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Sudbrooke, on the 24th ulti mo: two black Cashmere Shawls, one large scarf, the other square, bound with crape, about two inches deep; a pocket Knife, three blades, brown bone haft, small piece of plaiD brass on one side ; aud three pounds of cooked Bason. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Inspector Gregg, Lindsey Police Station, Lincoln.— Bow- st., March 4. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from Beccles Common in SuffolK : a dark brown mare Pony, about 13 hands high, aged ; also a black Colt, which has never been put to work, about three years old, rough coat, long mane and tail, and has a few white hairs on the poll.— Information to be given to the Police at Beccles.— Bow- street, March 8. Stolen early on the morning of the 4th instant, from Cove : a light brown Mare, 7 years old, 14| hands high, in good condition, white star ou forehead, white spot on near side, aud very dark legs ; also an old high spring Milk Cart, much worn, one wheel has fourteen spokes, the other only twelve, the near shaft has been broken and spliced; also a set of Harness, both rings on the pad broken, and no breeching, the collar recently mended at the pole ; the pro- perty of Mr. George Goddard. The horse and cart were traced to Hounslow. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Troke, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot.— Bow- street, March 8. Stolen on the 7th ultimo, fron Highgate : 2 Horses, one a bay cob, 15 hands high, long mane and tail, foretop cut, the other a bay mare, 16 hands high, aged, white face, sore on shoulder, near hind leg and off fore foot white, both in good condition. Supposed sold at Abington, Berks, on the 12th or 19th ultimo, by a horse dealer.— Metropolitan Police, March 6. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of CHARLES S. MACDONALD, charged with obtaining two Clarionetts and two Cases, by false pretences, ou the 2nd instant: he is a flute player, 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair, slight moustache, no whiskers, slightly pockpitted, bends his knees when standing, and of Foreign and slouching appearance ; dressed iu a dark overcoat, trimmed with fur. He is a Londoner, and generally employed in theatres, music halls, & c. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 8. JOHN JONES, late commercial traveller in the employ- ment of Mr. Evan Morris and Company, wholesale grocers, of 4, Lower Gardens, Water- street, Liverpool, charged with embezzlement, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 8th of December last, is not to be apprehended, the charge against him being withdrawn.— Bow- street, March 8. Description of a mau charged with stealing, from South Milford, ou the night of the 1st instant, a silk Shawl ( green on one side, scarlet on the other, small fringe slightly torn near one side), and an old white Table Cloth : he is a labourer iu malt kilns, 23 years of i » ge, about 5 Let high, light com- plexion, dark brown eyes and hair, stout build, and round face ; dressed iu drab fustian trousers, white slop, cloth cap, and clogs. He is accompauied by another man, a little older and taller. Information to be | given to Superintendent Wardle, West Riding Constabulary, Selby. — Bow- street, March 8. Description of THOMAS HORNSEY, charged with larceny at Whitby, North Riding of Yorkshire : about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion, brown hair and eyes, slender figure, small features, a groom, has a cut mark on left cheek, near the corner of mouth, small eyes, and soft voice; dressed in a blown jacket, green cloth trousers, fitting tigh; to the legs, and black cap. May be found about livery stables. Information to be given to Superintendent Clarkson, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby.— Bow- street, March 8. Description of JAMES HOWARTH, charged at Brad- ford with stealiug a Book, marked ' Bradford Corporation Waterworks,' the property of the Mayor, Aldermen, and Bur- gesses of this Borough : he is 50 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 ins. high, fair complexion light brown hair, turning grey, beard round the face, stiff build, long features ; dressed in dark mixture coat and vest woollen cord trousers, black pilot over- coat, black billycock hat, a foreman pipelayer. Information to be given to Chief Constable Granhan, Bradford, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant ior his apprehension.— Bow- st., March 6. Description of JOHN WILLIAM SMITH, late clerk and money collector o the Earl of Granville, at Hanley, Staffordshire, who abiconded on or about the 20th ultimo, charged on a warrant • vith embezzling large sums of Money, belonging to his employers : he is from 30 to 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather stout built, fresh complexion, brown hair and whiskeis, all round face, and appears to have very tender feet ; generally dressed in dark clothes, a brown overcoat, and round top black hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Alexander, Borough Police Office, Henley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 4. shire : JAMES GRANT, name supposed to be fictitious, supposed to be a native of Aberdeenshire, from 30 to 35 yean of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, fair hair and complexion, small long face, light blue eyes, common nose and mouth, thin fair whiskers, small moustache, clean make, not very stout, slightly knock- kneed, tattooed on the back of both hands and wrists with blue anchor and cross ; dressed in dark tweed coat and vest, both good, and having a little white in them, dark moleskin trousers, nearly new, strong lace- up boots, and imitation or real brown sealskin cap with peak in shape of a turban ; he is a deserter from the army, and may probably be marked witu the lettei ' D.;' works occasionally with farmers, and as a navvy. Information to be given to Chief Constable Gordon, Perth, who holds a sheriff's warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 8. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described). Absconded, charged with rape, on the 29th ultimo, at Ardradnaig, Lochtayside, in the parish of Kenmore, Perth- FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Absconded on the 9th ultimo, from Welshpool, Mont- gomeryshire, charged with unlawfully obtaining under false pretences, four Pigs, the property of Mr. Richard Rogers, farmer, of Trelystan : JOSEPH WALKER, a native of Here- fordshire, butcher and castrator, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, rather pale complexion, dark brown hair, little or no whiskers, and slight dark moustache ; he is well known in Leominster, where his mother resides, and also at Presteign, Rt ' norshire, at which place he was married on the 10th ultimo. Information to be given to Superintendent Strefford, or to P. C. Ellis, Police Station, Welshpool,' Mont- gomeryshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 6. Description of a man who obtained 22s. at Egremont on the 28th ultimo, by false pretences : about 40 yea;- s of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, rather stout, good appearance, slightly pockmarked, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, sandy whiskers and moustache; dressed in black silk hat, dark brown short overcoat with black velvet collar, black tight.- fitting trousers, yellow gloves, and brown silk ru.' irella. Information to be given to Superintendent Eic:' County Police, Birkenhead, or Inspector Saxton, Sessions House, Egremont, Cumberland.— Bow- street, March 4. Absconded from Wirksworth, Derbyshire, on the 25th ultimo, charged on a warrant with obtaining several sums of Money by false pretences : JOHN BALL, a butcher, about 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark eyes, brown hair, brown whiskers, fresh complexion, with very red face from drink ; dressed in a blue pilot cloth coat with velvet collar, dark mixture ribbed striped cloth trousers, dark plaid necktie, and a brown high- crowned hard billycock hat, or in a blue butcher's slop, light drab worsted cord trousers, and generally leather leggings and a brown high- crowned billy- cock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Sharpe, Matlock, Bath, or to Inspector Sims, Wirksworth, Derby- shire.— Bow- street, March 4. Absconded from the Police service at Newcastle- upon- Tyne, on the 17th ultimo : ALEXANDER BEWS, a single man, a native of Eday, Kirkwall, Orkney, 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, blue eyes, brown hair and whiskers, fair complexion ; has been employed as a salmon fisher, also as a water- bailiff in Berwickshire, and is now supposed to be in Aberdeen or neighbourhood. Information to be given to Chief Constable Nicholls, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 4. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of two men committed to Aylesbury Gaol, for two calendar months, as rogues and vagabonds : JOHN SMITH, 20 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fresh complexion, brown curly hair, haz- 1 eyes, aud says he is a painter ; dressed in a black coat and waistcoat, green cloth trousers, spring- side boots, and hard billycock hat. ANDREW WINTER, alias TURNER, 34 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, pockpitted, anchor on right arm, ring on left forefinger, brown hair, grey eyes, aud small brown whiskers meeting under the chin ; dressed in black coat, cord vest, new woollen Bedford cord trousers ( supposed stolen), strong lace- up boots, and an alpine hat; states that he is a bricklayer. Information to be given to Superintendent Dunham, Police Court, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- street, March 8. Description of a license- holder who has failed to report himself to the Chester Police: JOHN SMITH, Register No. 28, 43 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh com- plexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, mole on left eyebrow, ' D.' on left side ; he was convicted of burglary at the Manchester Assizes, on the 26th of July, 1866, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude; his sentence will expire on the 25tli of July, 1873. Information to be given to the Chief Constible, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- strect, March 8. Description of a photographer named ALEXANDER THACKERY, of Liverpool, convicted before the City Magistrates at Chester, on the 4th iustant, of larceny, and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment: 27 years of age, 5 feet 8J inches high, pale complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, anchor on back of left hand. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester. — Bow- street, March 8. Description of license- holders who have failed to comply PO LLC E GAZETTE. March 8. with the provisions of the ' Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871 MARY BROWN, No. 381, 59 years of age, 5 feet 3J ins. high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, dark brown hair; was sentenced to 7 years, at Liverpool, on tho 30th of November, 1805, for larceny, after previous convictions : she was discharged from Woking Prison, on the 9th of August, 1870, to Manchester. ANN BROWN, No. 34, 30 years of age, 4 feet 11 inches high, dark complexion,. brown hair and eyes, has lost several teeth, aud freckled face; was sentenced to 7 years, at Manchester, on the 3rd of April, 1866, for housebreaking ; she was discharged from Eagle House Refuge, on the 17th of December, 1870, to Manchester. JAMES BARKER, No. S654, 29 years of age, 5 feet 4f inches high, fresh complexiou, browu hair, blue eyes, speck ou left eye, bine ntajks ou left arm, and anchor on left band ; was sentenced to 7 years, at Bradford, on the 4th of Decem- ber, 1865, fo<- larceny, after previous convictions; he was discharged from Chatham Prison, on the 19th of June, 1871, to Loudon. MARY BROWN CARR, No. 403, 55 years of age, 5 feet 2A inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, scar le'ft of forehead, and lost upper front teeth ; was sentenced to 7 years, at Salford, on the 23rd of October, 1865, for larceny; she was discharged from Battery House Refuge, on the 2Uth of August, 1870. to Manchester. Supposed in Halifax. HENRY COX, No. 485, 25 yrs. of age, 5 ft. 5£ ins. high, fair complexion, browu hair, grey eyes, scar on forehead and centre of back ; was sentenced to 7 years, at Northampton, on the 22ud of October, 1865, for larceny from person ; he • was discharged from Portsmouth Prison, on the 10th of April, 1871, to Manchester. JOSIAH COLLINSON, No. 7430, 22 years of age, 5 feet 5i inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, hazel eyes, blue dot over right eye, cut back of right hand, and cut on lower lip ; was sentenced to 10 years ( commuted to 5 years), at Manchester, on the 1st of August, 1867, for aiding to THOMAS MURPHY, alias PETER PORTERS, No. 365, 32 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, scar side of right eye, several brown marks on left Bide; was sentenced to 7 years, at Salford, on the 22nd May, 1865, for larceny from person ; he was discharged from Portsmouth Prison, on the 30th May, 1871, to Man- chester. EDWARD OAKES, No. 8275, 26 years of age, 5 feet 4£ inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, scar left eye, and right eye, left cheek bone slightly pock- marked, mole left side face; was sentenced to 7 years, at Manchester, on the 26th June, 1865, for larceny from person; he was discharged from Chatham Prison, on the 7th February, 1871, to Manchester. WILLIAM PARRY, No. 8569, 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 J inches high, fair complexion, sandy hair, blue eyes, scars ou forehead, nose, right side of belly, inside left forearm, and top of belly ; was sentenced to 7 years, at Kirkdale, ou the 31s> t October, 1865, for shop lifting ; he was discharged from Chatham Prison, on the 28th April, 1871, to Manchester. WILLIAM PARDOE, No. 425, 33 years of age, 5 feet 5i inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, ' W. P.' above bend of left arm, scar on forehead, and left eye ; was sentenced to 7 years, at Manchester, on the 26th June, 1865, forlareeny ; he was discharged from Parkhurst Prison, on the 8th July, 1871, at Manchester. JANE ROBERTS, No. 467, 35 years of age, 5 feet 2| ins. high, sallow complexion, black hair, brown eyes, cut on knuckle of left second finger, and has lost most of frout teeth; was sentenced to 7 years, at Salford, on the 3rd of July, 1865, for larceny ; she was discharged from Battery House Refuge, on the 8th of March, 1870, to Manchester. ANNIE RENSHAW, alias ANN HUGHES, No. 624, 25 years of age, 4 feet 10i inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, hollow scar near right ear, mole back o£ neck, and two scars on back of each hand ; was sentenced to 7 years, at Manchester, on the loth of March, 1866, for commit a rape; he was discharged from Millbank Prison, robbery with violeuce ; she was discharged from Battery on the 14th of August, 1871, to Manchester. House Refuge, on the 26th of March, 1871, to London. JOSEPH DENMAN, No. 8283, 43 years of age, 5 feet JOHN SPENCER, No. 236, 48 years of age, 5 ft. 4J ins. OA inch high, fresh complexion, greyish hair, grey eyes, lost high, sallow complexion, brown eyes, and dark brown hair ; greater part of nose from cancer, face disfigured, aud bald; blue mark under left eye, anchor on left arm, and ulcer was stntenced to 7 years, at Stafford, on the 26th of June, mark <\ ii body ; was sentenced to 20 years, at York, on the 1865, for larceny from person; he was discharged from 0th July, 1856, for arson; he was discharged from Brixton Chatham Prison, on the 2 ith of December, 1870, to London. Prison, on the 23rd March. 1871, to Manchester. ALICE DRURY, No. 591, 51 years of age, 4 feet ins. MARY ANN TAYLOR, No. 380, 32 years of age, 4 feet high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, cut left 10 inches high, dark complexiou, and brown eyes aud hair; eyebrow, blue mark across nose, aud has lost several teeth ; scar on left shoulder and elbow from burns, and ears pierced ; was sentenced to 7 years, at Manchester, on the 29tli of was sentenced to 7 years, at Manchester, on the 29th Nov., November, 1866, for housebreaking ; she was discharged 1865, for larceuy ; she was discharged from Woking Prison, from Eagle House Refuge, on the 20th of September, 1871, on the 31st August, 1870, to Manchester, to Manchester. MARGARET TANKARD, No. 386, 27 years of age, 5 feet JAMES DUFFY, No. 8650, 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 ins. lj iuches high, fair complexiou, blue eyes, and brown hair; hird, fresh complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes ; was scar under right jaw, and cut on forehead aud corner of each high, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, and scar on 3 iuohes high, sallow complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair ; forehead ; was sentenced to 7 years, at Manchester, on the blue cut on centre of forehead ( iu the hair) and corner of left 24th of August, 1865, for larceny ; lie was discharged from eyebrow, and right thumb fractured ; was sentenced to 10 Portland Prison, on the 6th of December, 1871, to Manchester, years, ( commuted to 5), at Manchester, on the 1st August, ELIZABETH FOLEY, No. 628, 31 years of age, 4 feet 1867, for rape; he was discharged from Millbank Prison, ll£ iuches high, sallow complexiou, brown hair and eyes, two ou the 14th August, 1871, to Manchester, scars right of forehead, cut on left of forehead aud eyebrow, LOUIS WEBB, No. 9716, 34 years of age, 5 feet 4 iuches and mole on right cheek ; was sentenced to 7 years, at high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, and grey eyes, Salford, On the 9t'ii of July, 1866, for felony; she was ' Mary' back .. f left wriat, badly pockmarked ; was sentenced discharged from Battery House Refuge, ou the 31st of July, to 5 years at Manchester, ou the 1st August, 1867, for forgery; 1871 to Manchester. he was discharged from Chatham Prison, on the 17th July, ELIZABETH GREEN, No. 451, 35 years of age, 5 feet 1871, to Manchester. Supposed to be working at the railway 3j inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, grey eyes, and works, Crewe. cut on left eyebrow ; was sentenced to 7 y » ars, at" Liverpool, SARAH WOGDEN, No. 484, 23 years of age, 5 feet on the 30th of October, 1865, for larceny from person; she 0j inches high, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, cut was discharged from Battery House Refuge, on the 5th of July, 1870, to Liverpool. JOHN HARTLEY, No. 5715, 51 years of age, 5 feet light eyebrow, mole right shoulder and back of neck, ears pierced, and vaccinated ; w- as sentenced to 7 years, at Man- chester, on the 29th January, 1866, for stealing from the 3 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, lost person ; she was discharged from Winchester Prison, on the front upper teeth, and scar from burn on back of right arm ; 19th November, 1870, to Winchester. was sentenced to 7 years, at Manchester, on the 30th of These licence- holders cannot be fouud at the addresses given January, 1866, for stealing ; he was discharged from Port- by them, and are to be apprehended by any constable, and the fact immediately reported to Chief Constable Palin, Town Ilall, Manchester.— How- street, March 8. land Prison, on the 15th of July, 1871, to Manchester.
